Abstract:The causative species of a total of 42 403 dermatophytosis cases that occurred during 1966-2015 were surveyed. The most prevalent clinical type was tinea pedis, followed by tinea unguium, corporis, cruris, manus, faciei and capitis. The prevalence of tinea faciei and capitis has increased since the late 1990s and the late 2000s, respectively. The most prevalent dermatophyte species was Trichophyton rubrum, followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes (the majority of the isolates were Trichophyton interdigitale in the latest nomenclature). These dermatophytes were detected in over 80% of the isolates identified in tinea pedis, unguium, cruris and manus cases. Recently, Microsporum canis and Trichophyton tonsurans have been increasingly identified. The frequency of M. canis isolated from tinea corporis, faciei and capitis cases started to rise in the early 1990s. T. tonsurans was first identified in Nagasaki in 2003. T. rubrum was the most commonly isolated pathogen in tinea faciei and corporis cases. However, the proportion of cases attributed to it has decreased since the early 1990s, whereas M. canis and T. tonsurans are being increasingly isolated since the early 2000s. In tinea capitis cases, the proportion of each pathogen isolated has changed dramatically. M. canis was first identified in the late 1970s, with an increasing prevalence up to the early 1990s. In contrast, the prevalence of T. tonsurans has increased since the early 2000s. In the 2010s, the most common fungus causing tinea capitis was T. tonsurans, followed by M. canis and T. rubrum.
Low sero-prevalence of hepatitis delta antibodies in HIV/ hepatitis B co-infected patients attending an urban HIV clinic in Uganda

Abstract:Background Co-infection with hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis D (HDV) is common among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals in developing countries and it aggressively accelerates progression of liver disease to cirrhosis and other complications. There is scarcity of data on HDV in sub-Saharan Africa .We investigated the sero-prevalence and factors associated with HDV antibody among HIV/HBV co-infected patients attending a large urban HIV clinic in Uganda. Methods We screened 189 HIV/HBV co-infected individuals for anti-HDV immunoglobulin G (IgG) and performed logistic regression to determine the associated factors. Socio-demographic, clinical data, immunological status, and liver fibrosis (as determined by the Aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index and transient elastography) were included. Results Participants were predominately young and of sound immunologic status (median age 40 years, median CD4 440 cells/µl). 98% were on ART regimens containing anti-HBV active medications (95.2% were on TDF/3TC while 4.8% on 3TC containing regimen). Median duration on ART was 36 months (IQR 22–72). Anti-HDV was detected in 6/198, 3.2% (95% CI 1.14–6.92%), associated with male gender and a duration of more than 5 years since HIV diagnosis. Conclusions The sero-prevalence of HDV antibodies among the HIV/HBV co-infected patients is low in a Ugandan urban cohort.
Epidemiological overview of mucocutaneous fungal infections in Munich

Abstract:Background and objectives: Knowledge about the current spectrum of dermatomycoses is important for diagnosis and therapy. Patients and methods: A retrospective, monocentric analysis of mucocutaneous fungal infections diagnosed at a large European academic dermatology department in Munich was conducted; 87,229 samples from 48,916 patients from January 1, 2011, to August 30, 2020, were included. Results: Fungi were detected in 11,513 samples from 48,916 (23.54%), and 36 different species were identified. Candida (C.) albicans was the most common pathogen (5,055 detections; 43.91% of all positive samples), followed by Trichophyton (T.) rubrum (3,076 detections; 26.72% of all positive samples) and Candida parapsilosis (923 detections; 8.02% of all positive samples). Rare pathogens such as Trichophyton raubitschekii were also detected. Coinfections with multiple species were detected in 44 cases. Conclusions: Even though C. albicans, T. rubrum, and C. parapsilosis were confirmed as the most common pathogens, rare pathogens should also be considered in clinical practice. The predominant spectrum of fungi differed from that reported in other countries. Furthermore, a difference in the pathogen spectrum could be observed depending on the age group and body site.
Superficial fungal infections in the department of dermatology, University Hospital Jena: A 7-year retrospective study on 4556 samples from 2007 to 2013

Abstract:Background: Superficial fungal infections are often seen in day-to-day clinical practice, and their prevalence continues to rise worldwide. Over the years, a change in the pattern of dermatophytoses has been noted. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the epidemiologic profile of dermatophytes at the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Jena, from 2007 to 2013. Methods: The retrospective study was carried out with a total of 4556 samples collected from 3607 patients suspected of superficial fungal infections during the 7-year study period. Results: Among the 3607 suspected patients, 1951 (54.09%) were men and 1656 (45.91%) were women. Of 4556 samples, 703 (15.43%) samples were positive for fungal culture, which included 585 (83.21%) dermatophytes and 118 (16.79%) non-dermatophytes. Trichophyton (T.) rubrum was the most common isolated pathogen in 73.33% of the dermatophyte cases. Among dermatophyte-infected patients, men were most likely to be affected (63.48%) as well as those of higher age (61 to 80). The most commonly affected areas were nails (33.16%) and feet (33%). T rubrum was recurrently isolated in several regions with exception of the scalp where M canis (58.33%) was the most frequently isolated pathogen. About 16.04% of cases had a history of treatment taken prior to sampling. The majority of the affected individuals did not have any prior animal contact (77.26%). T benhamiae was exclusively associated with contact to guinea pigs. Conclusion: Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated pathogen in several regions except the scalp. New dermatophyte species emerged with time especially T benhamiae.
Epidemiology and clinical features of dermatomycoses and dermatophytoses.

Abstract:Dermatophytosis, candidosis and pityriasis versicolor account for the majority of fungal skin diseases in Denmark and are seen in 8% of patients with dermato-venerological problems. In children, zoophilic species like Microsporum canis (from cats), Trichophyton (T) verrucosum (from cattle) and T. mentagrophytes granulare (from rodents) are the common causes of dermatophytosis and are seen in approximately 15% of all cases. Anthropophilic species are the main cause of dermatophytosis in adults and are isolated more often in males than in females. T. rubrum (48%), T. mentagrophytes interdigitale (14%) and Epidermophyton floccosum (10%) are the species usually involved. The feet are the site of infection in about 50% of the cases, toenails, glabrous skin and inguinal folds equally often in 42%, palms in 6% and the scalp in 2%. The prevalence of tinea pedis in 15-year-old school children and 20-year-old males was found to be 4% and 6%, respectively. A relative risk of 3.1 for contracting tinea pedis when being an atopic or having an atopic family was demonstrated in the former group. Pityriasis versicolor and candidosis of skin and mucosal membranes are both secondary dermatomycoses caused by endosaphrophytic yeasts. Local or systemic predisposing disorders are usually required for the development of symptoms.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this study was to provide an update on the epidemiology and causative agents of dermatophyte infections in England. We analysed all samples of skin, hair and nail (n = 34 624) that underwent mycological examination (microscopy and culture) in a single diagnostic microbiology laboratory in South East England over a period of 17 years (2006–2023). Fungal culture was positive for 22.0% (n = 7601) of samples. Dermatophytes accounted for 89.4% (n = 6793) of these, and nondermatophyte moulds were isolated in 4.8% (n = 366). The dermatophyte most commonly isolated was Trichophyton in 99.3% (n = 6744), followed by Microsporum in 0.5% (n = 37) and Epidermophyton in 0.2% (n = 12). Within the Trichophyton group, 99.4% (n = 6703) were pure Trichophyton isolates, while 0.6% (n = 41) displayed a mixed growth of dermatophyte and nondermatophyte moulds. Onychomycosis of the toenails was the most common infection (n = 2472), predominantly affecting women, with a mean age of 48.3 years. Trichophyton rubrum was isolated in 82.7% of cases, with positive microscopy (fungal hyphae observed) in 44.5%. Onychomycosis of the fingers, while less frequent (n = 427), exhibited a similar demographic profile, affecting mostly women, with a mean age of 53.7 years. Other dermatophyte infections included tinea pedis (n = 400), tinea corporis (n = 204), tinea cruris (n = 90), tinea manuum (n = 58) and tinea faciei (n = 14). Trichophyton rubrum was the commonest cause of dermatophyte infection across all body sites, except for tinea capitis (n = 82), where Trichophyton mentagrophytes (30.5%), Trichophyton violaceum (19.5%) and Trichophyton tonsurans (15.9%) were the most common causative agents. Non-anthropophilic species (n = 158) caused infection across all body sites, although most commonly this manifested as tinea capitis (25.3%, n = 40) or tinea corporis (20.3% n = 32). Notably, these infections were found to occur in a younger age group, with 27.8% of cases in individuals < 10 years old, and were more common in female patients. Trichophyton mentagrophytes, a zoophilic dermatophyte, was the most prevalent non-anthropophilic species in this study. Over the 17-year period (2006–2023), T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis and T. tonsurans showed significant declines in prevalence of 95%, 90% and 86%, respectively. Conversely, T. rubrum, constituting 75% of all dermatophytes isolated in 2006, demonstrated a substantial increase, reaching a prevalence of 95% in 2023. There were no cases of Trichophyton indotineae. This study provides an overview of recent epidemiological trends in dermatophyte infections in England. Trichophyton rubrum is increasingly the commonest cause of dermatophytosis, and the nails are the most common site of infection. Infection with non-anthropophilic species is rare and has a distinct demographic profile. Awareness of local trends in the clinical and mycological profiles of dermatophyte infections is important to guide the management of individual cases and inform public health interventions.

Abstract:Nontuberculous mycobacteria cause a wide range of infections, including cutaneous infections, in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. Although pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial infections have increased significantly in Japan in recent years, there is less evidence on clinical and microbiological characteristics of cutaneous nontuberculous mycobacterial infections in Japan. We reviewed 86 Japanese cases reported between July 2016 and November 2021 and analyzed them in conjunction with the eight patients from our institution who were diagnosed with cutaneous nontuberculous mycobacterial infections by culture between 2015 and 2021. In the aggregate series, the average patient age was 60 years, and the ratio of immunocompromised hosts was 53%, both of which were higher than those in previous reports from other countries. No female predominance was observed, unlike in pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacteria infections. Rapidly growing mycobacteria accounted for 58% of the cases (n = 54), whereas slowly growing mycobacteria for 43% (n = 40). Mycobacterium marinum (also known as Mycobacteroides marinum) (n = 20, 21%) was the most common cause, followed by Mycobacterium chelonae (n = 18, 19%), Mycobacterium abscessus (also known as Mycobacteroides abscessus) (n = 15, 16%), and Mycobacterium ulcerans (n = 11, 12%). While clinical appearance was variable, M ulcerans infections usually presented with ulcers, while nodules were common among infections caused by M chelonae and M marinum. Disseminated infections involving multiple organs were observed in 23 patients (24%). Thirty‐two cases (30%) were preceded by exposure, including raising or handling fish, trauma, and invasive medical procedures. Most patients were treated with more than two antibiotics and responded to therapy.

Abstract:Background Epidermophyton floccosum (E. floccosum), an anthropophilic dermatophyte, is the primary causative agent of skin conditions such as tinea cruris, tinea pedis and tinea corporis. Objectives This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of E. floccosum‐induced dermatophytosis, with particular emphasis on the types of infections and demographic profiles. Methods In this retrospective study, patient records from the dermatology outpatient clinic were scrutinized, covering the timeframe from January 2009 to December 2020. Eligibility for the study required a dermatophytosis diagnosis verified by microscopic examination and fungal culture. Results Of the 4669 confirmed dermatophytosis cases, 82 (1.8%) were attributable to E. floccosum infection. The proportions of male and female patients with E. floccosum infections were 50.0% each. The most common presentation was tinea pedis (39.0%), followed by tinea cruris (37.8%) and tinea corporis (26.8%). The mean age at disease onset for tinea cruris was 38.7 ± 18.7 years, which was lower than that for tinea pedis (50.6 ± 14.2 years) and tinea corporis (53.5 ± 16.4 years). However, these age differences were not statistically significant. A continuous decrease in E. floccosum isolation was observed over the study period. Conclusions There was a steady decline in the prevalence of E. floccosum dermatophytosis over the 12‐year study period. Despite the decreasing trend, tinea cruris, tinea corporis and tinea pedis remained the predominant clinical manifestations of E. floccosum infection.

Abstract:Onychomycosis can be treated with topical and oral medications. However, it is important to appropriately select these medications according to the type and severity of the disease and ensure treatment is continued for the recommended duration. In Japan, treatment options for onychomycosis have increased in recent years. Moreover, in 2019, the guidelines for dermatomycosis treatment were revised. In this study, we conducted a receipt survey to clarify the actual treatment status of onychomycosis cases as indicated by the continuation rates of prescribed treatment drugs, together with a web‐based survey to ascertain the prescribing policy of dermatologists regarding drugs for onychomycosis treatment. In agreement with past surveys, this receipt survey showed that the prescription continuation rate for oral medications was higher than that for topical medications. The 1‐year prescription continuation rate for topical onychomycosis medications was found to be low (<10%). The web‐based survey showed that the percentage of physicians who prescribed oral medications as their first choice increased by approximately 10% for each disease type, compared with the results of the previous survey conducted around 7 years ago. However, the study also confirmed that topical drugs are still prescribed for some disease types for which oral drugs are better suited. To ensure complete cure without patient drop‐out, oral drugs with a high probability of achieving complete cure and a high continuation rate should be prescribed for patients with onychomycosis.

Abstract:Background Dermatophytosis is very common among all age groups throughout the world. The incidence of the same is increasing on a steady basis. Aim Estimating the clinical prevalence of dermatophytes mycoses among the patients visiting the outpatient unit and assessing its distinct manifestations. Methodology A prospective observational study was conducted with the patients attending the Skin and STD outpatient unit of a tertiary care teaching hospital in Salem. A total of 3068 outpatients attended the department, of which 420 patients were diagnosed with dermatophytic mycoses and were taken for investigating the prevalence. Results A total of 420 dermatophytosis patients were included giving a percentage prevalence of 13.69%. There were more female patients (n = 213, 50.71%) than males (n = 207, 49.29%). The most common afflicted age group was 31–40 years (n = 99, 50.71%). Most of the patients had an atypical lesion called tinea incognita (n = 265, 63.09%) where there was no typical classic appearance of dermatophytic infections. The most prevalent clinical manifestation was tinea corporis (n = 73, 17.38%) followed by tinea cruris (n = 69, 16.43%). There were more newly diagnosed dermatophytosis cases (n = 326) than the previously diagnosed cases (n = 94). Conclusion This study concludes that dermatophytic mycoses were more prevalent among females than males and among the age groups of 31–40 years. The most common clinical presentation was tinea incognita followed by tinea corporis.

Analysis on the pathogenic fungi in patients with superficial mycosis in the Northeastern China during 10 years

Abstract:This study analyzed the infection of superficial mycosis and the relationship between the distribution characteristics of pathogenic fungi and age, time and sex in Northeast China in the past 10 years. We would like to provide a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of related diseases. From December 2008 to December 2018, 5,374 superficial mycoses from Northeast China were selected. The fungal species were identified by fungal microscopy, fungal culture, and species identification. Besides, the relationship between sex, age, time and the distribution of superficial mycosis and pathogenic fungi was analyzed. Among the 5,374 patients, the top three infections were tinea pedis (n=1,538, 28.62%), tinea cruris (n=1,018, 18.94%) and tinea corporis (n=938, 17.45%). The top three pathogens were Trichophyton rubrum (n=2,849, 48.65%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes (n=947, 16.14%) and Candida spp. (n=804, 13.70%). The main pathogenic fungi were dermatophytes. The age group with the highest incidence of tinea capitis was children (n=372, 6.92%). The highest incidence rate of tinea pedis was in 31-69-year adults (n=905, 16.84%); Malassezia mainly affects young people aged 15-30. Yeast and mold mostly invade the elderly patients >60 years old. The incidence of tinea cruris, tinea pedis and tinea corporis in male patients was higher than that in female patients. The incidence of onychomycosis in female patients was higher than that in male patients (P<0.05). The isolation rate of Candida, Mold, Microsporum canis, Malassezia and Sporothrix increased year by year, while that of Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophyte, Trichophyton schoenleinii and Epidermophyton floccosum decreased. From December 2008 to December 2018, dermatophytes were the main pathogens of superficial mycosis in Northeast China. The distribution of disease species and pathogenic fungi varied in different gender, age and time.
Epidemiological survey of patients with pustular psoriasis in the Japanese Society for Psoriasis Research from 2017 to 2020

Abstract:The Japanese Society for Psoriasis Research (JSPR) has been conducting annual epidemiological surveys of patients with pustular psoriasis in Japan since 2017. This study aimed to conduct a recent epidemiological analysis of patients with pustular psoriasis who were enrolled in the JSPR from 2017 to 2020. A total of 291 patients from 131 medical institutions were enrolled, of which 47.4% (138 cases) were males and 52.6% (153 cases) were females. The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of the patients was 57.4 ± 20.3 years (males, 61.2 ± 17.3 years; females, 54.1 ± 22.1 years). The mean ± SD age of the patients at disease onset was 48.5 ± 22.5 years (males, 50.8 ± 20.6 years; females, 46.4 ± 24.0 years). The types of pustular psoriasis observed included the von Zumbusch type (59.8%), annular pustular psoriasis (8.2%), impetigo herpetiformis (6.5%), and acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau (4.8%), of which, the majority of the patients with impetigo herpetiformis were female. Among the patients, 58.4% were treated with oral medications and 44.0% were treated with biologics. The most common oral medication prescribed was etretinate (52.4%), followed by corticosteroids (24.7%) and cyclosporin (22.9%). The most common biologics used were IL‐17 inhibitors (ixekizumab [28.1%] and secukinumab [22.7%]), followed by tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors (infliximab [15.6%]) and IL‐23 inhibitors (guselkumab [14.8%] and risankizumab [10.2%]). This survey thus provides new and significant information regarding the recent perspective of pustular psoriasis, such as patient characteristics and treatment trends, in Japan.

Abstract:Since 1982, the Japanese Society for Psoriasis Research has conducted annual epidemiological surveys of patients with psoriasis. Kawada et al. have reported data for 1982-2001 and Takahashi et al. have reported data for 2002-2008. The present study evaluated 9290 psoriatic cases according to age and sex (2009-2012). The male : female ratio was 2.08:1 (6281 male patients [67.6%] to 3009 female patients [32.4%]). The most prevalent type was psoriasis vulgaris (85.6% of all cases), which was followed by psoriasis arthropathica (6.0%), psoriasis guttate acuta (3.2%), Zumbusch-type generalized pustular psoriasis (1.8%) and psoriasis erythroderma (1.5%). Psoriasis vulgaris was the most prevalent type for all ages, while psoriasis arthropathica and psoriasis guttate acuta were most prevalent among patients aged less than 65 years. The present survey detected an increased number of cases with comorbid diabetes and/or arthritis symptoms compared with the previous surveys. We found that treatments frequently involved topical corticosteroids (89.7% of cases) and vitamin D<sub>3</sub> ointments (78.0% of cases), with a notable increase in the use of vitamin D<sub>3</sub> ointments. Systemic treatments were used in 33.3% of cases, including cyclosporin (33.6%), etretinate (19.5%), methotrexate (8.6%), infliximab (11.4%), adalimumab (10.9%) and ustekinumab (6.2%). Phototherapy was used in 30.9% of cases. Although psoralen plus ultraviolet A therapy was the predominant phototherapy during previous studies, the present survey revealed that narrowband ultraviolet B therapy was used in 84.5% of phototherapy-treated cases. Thus, the present survey revealed major changes in treatment trends.

Abstract:Polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE) are strong radar returns from the cold summer mesopause region, at altitudes ∼ 80–95 km at high latitudes. The probing radar frequency can range from about 50 MHz to over 1 GHz. The prevailing theory to explain PMSE involves both neutral air turbulence and the presence of charged dust (probably ice) which slows down electron diffusion. This turbulence scattering theory requires a large value of the Schmidt number (the ratio of neutral viscosity to plasma diffusion) to explain observations. There have been questions recently about how large the Schmidt number has to be, and how realistic these values are, with regard to explaining PMSE at higher UHF frequencies.
Clinical and Mycological Study of 600 Cases of Tinea Capitis in Shanghai

Abstract:Objective: To find out clinical features and pathogenic fungi of tinea capitis in Shanghai in the last 10 years. Methods: Retrospective analysis was used. Results: 600 patients: male 268; female 332. Age: from 20 days to 84 years old. In the 498 cases with positive culture, there were tinea favosa one (0.20%) case; gray-patch ringworm 325(65.26%) cases; black-dot ringworm 132(26.51%) cases; kerion 40(8.03%) cases. The main pathogenic fungi were Microsporum canis 322(64.66%), Trichophyton violaceum 89(17.87%), and Trichophyton tousurans 45(9.04%). Conclusions: Gray-patch ringworm has the highest prevalence, and M.canis is the most common pathogenic fungus in Shanghai.

Abstract:<h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>Dermatomycoses, involving skin, hair and nail infections are among the most frequent human infections with global distribution and may have a public health and economic impact. The causative agents include Dermatophytes, Candida, Malassezia and non‐Dermatophyte molds. High morbidity may be associated with certain variables: age, gender, occupation ‐ such as farming or military service, climate or environmental conditions.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Objectives</h3><p>The objectives of the present study included:</p><p>(1). Assessment of epidemiological aspects of dermatomycoses in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).</p><p>(2). Antifungal drug susceptibility of fungi isolated in culture from soldiers.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Patients/Methods</h3><p>1.Epidemiological assessment: data based on IDF's medical registry during the period 2009‐2013 on 10831 male and female soldiers (8164 & 2667, respectively), of which 2589 were combat soldiers.</p><p>2.Susceptibility tests: to Ketoconazole, Fluconazole, Itraconazole, Terbinafine, Griseofulvin of ~ 100 Dermatophyte and Candida isolates, using E‐test and/or disk diffusion assays.</p><p>3.Statistical analysis: logistic regression, Chi square, ANOVA</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results and Conclusions</h3><p>1.Incidence in male soldiers higher than in female soldiers (35% vs. 28%)</p><p>2.Incidence in combat soldiers higher than in non‐combat soldiers (39% vs 32%))</p><p>3.The major site of involvement – nails</p><p>4.Infections peaked during summer months</p><p>5.Dermatophytes constitute close to 90% of the etiological agents (87 & 86%)</p><p>6.Trichophyton rubrum the dominant species</p><p>7.Terbinafine was the most active antifungal drug</p><p>The most significant conclusion of relevance of this study is the finding of higher morbidity rate among combat soldiers, as this may affect the activity of this group.</p>

Abstract:Background Dermatomycoses count to the most frequent dermatoses in Cambodia. Objectives The aim of this survey was to investigate the occurrence of dermatophytes in this Southeast Asian country. Methods From June 2017 to July 2018, skin scrapings were taken from 67 patients with superficial dermatophytosis for mycological diagnostics. Identification of dermatophytes was confirmed by sequencing of the 'internal transcribed spacer'—(ITS) region of the rDNA, and the gene of the Translation Elongation Factor (TEF)‐1α. Results Patients were suffering from tinea corporis and tinea inguinalis/cruris 42/67 (63%), tinea capitis/faciei 14/67 (21%), tinea corporis/capitis/faciei 6/67 (9%), tinea manuum/pedis 2/67 (3%), tinea pedis 2/67 (3%) and tinea manuum 1/67 (1%). Both, by culture and/or PCR, a dermatophyte was detected in 52 (78%) out of 67 samples. Culture positive were 42 (81%) of 52, PCR positive were 50 (96%). The following dermatophytes were found: Trichophyton (T.) rubrum, 36/52 strains (69%, 29 by culture), T. mentagrophytes/T. interdigitale (TM/TI) 9/52 (17%, six by culture) and Microsporum (M.) canis 5/52 strains (10%, by culture). One strain of Nannizzia (N.) incurvata 1/52 (2%) and N. nana 1/52 (2%) was isolated. Based on sequencing, we demonstrated that two T. mentagrophytes strains out of the nine TM/TI represented the new ITS genotype XXV Cambodia. We found one T. mentagrophytes strain genotype VIII (now, reclassified as T. indotineae). This isolate was terbinafine resistant, and it exhibited the amino acid substitution Phe397Leu in the squalene epoxidase. Three strains of T. interdigitale genotype II* were isolated. Conclusion This is the first survey on epidemiology of dermatophytes in Cambodia. Currently, T. rubrum represents the most frequent species in Cambodia. One Indian strain genotype VIII T. mentagrophytes was found. A highlight was the first description of the new T. mentagrophytes genotype XXV Cambodia.

Abstract:Background There has been a global rise in cases of dermatophytosis and, in particular, recalcitrant and recurrent cases on tinea of the glabrous skin. This phenomenon, particularly prevalent in India, has been linked to the concerning rise of antifungal resistance. The challenge is amplified by a dearth of comprehensive, international data to understand the global scope and characteristics of such cases. Objectives This study aims to collate international insights, focusing on areas outside Europe (as this was previously published), to map the extent and characteristics of clinical and, where possible, laboratory confirmed tinea of the glabrous skin through an online survey administered to dermatologists globally. Methods An online survey was distributed from February 2022 to July 2023 and captured data on respondents' experience of recalcitrant and recurrent tinea of the glabrous skin over the preceding 3 years. Results A total of 260 responses were received spreads across 36 countries, excluding Europe. In total, 91.7% reported seeing cases of recalcitrant or recurrent tinea of the glabrous skin over the preceding 3 years. Common anatomical sites affected were the trunk and groin. T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum were the predominant species implicated, and there were low rates of laboratory confirmed dermatophyte resistance. Conclusions The high rates of reported recalcitrant and recurrent tinea of the glabrous skin underscore an urgent need for global collaborative efforts and enhanced diagnostic measures. The findings advocate for the establishment of a standardized global disease registry, regulation of over‐the‐counter antifungal and steroid combinations, correlation of clinical suspicion with laboratory confirmed drug resistance and exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies to mitigate the burgeoning challenge of dermatophyte resistance.
