Abstract:Mercury emission has become a great environmental concern because of its high toxicity, bioaccumulation, and persistence. Adsorption is an effective method to remove Hg0 from coal-fired flue gas, with adsorbents playing a dominant role. Extensive investigations have been conducted on the use of CuO-based materials for Hg0 removal, and some fruitful results have been obtained. In this review, we summarize advances in the application of CuO-based materials for Hg0 capture. Firstly, the fundamentals of CuO, including its crystal information and synthesis methods, are introduced. Then, the Hg0 removal capability of some typical CuO-based adsorbents is discussed. Considering that coal-fired flue gas also contains a certain amount of NO, SO2, H2O, NH3, and HCl, the impacts of these species on adsorbent Hg0 removal efficiency are summarized next. By generalizing the mechanisms dominating the Hg0 removal process, the rate-determining step and the key intermediates can be discovered. Apart from Hg0, some other air pollutants, such as CO, NOx, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), account for a certain portion of flue gas. In view of their similar abatement mechanisms, simultaneous removal of Hg0 and other air pollutants has become a hot topic in the environmental field. Considering the Hg0 re-emission phenomena in wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD), mercury capture performance under different conditions in this device is discussed. Finally, we conclude that new adsorbents suitable for long-term operation in coal-fired flue gas should be developed to realize the effective reduction of mercury emissions.
Recent advances in MnO2-based adsorbents for mercury removal from coal-fired flue gas

Abstract:Mercury emissions from power stations have threatened the natural environment and human health. Adsorption is one of the most effective technologies for the abatement of mercury. As the key component, the performance of the adsorbents directly decides the mercury removal efficiency of the whole system. Extensive research has been conducted on the removal of mercury using manganese-based adsorbents and to some extent, a satisfactory result is obtained. In this review, the progress on the applications of MnO2-based materials for mercury removal was discussed. Firstly, the fundamentals of MnO2, including its crystalline information and synthesis methods, were summarized. Secondly, physicochemical properties and mercury removal performance of various adsorbents, including raw MnO2, MnO2-supported and MnO2 mixed oxide adsorbents, were introduced. Considering that SO2, HCl, H2O and NO constituted the most common components in coal-fired flue gas, the effects of these gas species on adsorbent mercury capture capacity were evaluated and the results indicated that whether or not these components promoted mercury removal closely depended on the mirco-structure and formula of the adsorbents. As well, the possible mercury adsorption mechanisms of the adsorbents under different conditions were discussed and the key intermediate together with the rate-determining step was also uncovered. After summarizing the recyclability and regeneration methods of the reported adsorbents, we concluded with suggestion that attention should be focused on the development of new MnO2-based adsorbents suitable for the long-term operation under real flue gas conditions in future research.

Abstract:The requirement to characterize and remove mercury from natural gas and its condensate span a wide range of subject fields, from environmental science and analytical chemistry to material design and chemical engineering. The first part of this review discusses the mercury species and exposure limits in natural gas and gas condensate. In the second and third parts, the analytical techniques and pretreatment steps for analyzing mercury in natural gas and gas condensate are described separately. In the fourth part, the conventional gas processing operations are introduced together with the limit values of mercury distribution in natural gas processing operations. By analyzing the distribution and transformation of mercury in natural gas processing, the location of the mercury removal unit (MRU) for natural gas plants is optimized. In the fifth part, the different types of adsorbents for mercury removal from natural gas and liquid media are enumerated based on different mechanisms. The wet and acidic resistance of the different adsorbents in removing Hg0 from natural gas and flue gas is introduced. In the sixth part, as the species of mercury in a condensate are more complex than those in natural gas, the adsorption selectivity of each adsorbent for mercury removal from natural gas condensate is listed for comparison. Finally, the remaining challenges for mercury species determination and removal together with the expected future developments for mercury adsorbents are concluded.

Mercury Contamination of Process and Pipeline Infrastructure - A Novel, All- Encompassing Solution for the Evaluation and Decontamination of Mercury from Pipelines and Topside Process Equipment to allow Safe Disposal

Abstract:Abstract Mercury present in produced oil and gas will deposit onto the internal process infrastructure via a number of mechanisms including chemisorption and adsorption with the primary mechanism being through reaction with iron sulphide to form mercury sulphide. Due to the volumes of fluids produced and the length of time facilities are in production, even where the produced fluids have historically contained relatively low concentrations of mercury, pipeline scales containing percentage levels of mercury may be present. Thus, aged facilities and infrastructure that have reached the end of their operational life and are selected for either recycling or abandonment, may pose a serious risk to health and the environment if the decommissioning process is not managed correctly. Smelting, hot cutting or other thermal/abrasive surface preparations for example, can lead to significant release of elemental mercury, a worker exposure hazard. Alternatively, if sub-sea pipelines are abandoned in-situ, all mercury present will ultimately be transferred to the local ecosystems. Consequently, the oil and gas industry have the requirement for a complete mercury decontamination solution from initial evaluation, demonstrable cleaning efficacy through to a guarantee for the treatment and disposal of the mercury waste generated in an environmentally-friendly manner. In order to decide upon the most appropriate decontamination solution, an evaluation of the extent of mercury contamination should be undertaken. A novel approach that has recently been successfully implemented involved analysis of pipe sections by multiple analytical techniques, providing the mercury concentration in the scale/steel. From this, the total mass of mercury across the process or pipeline was approximated. Subsequently, the efficacy of the preferred chemical to remove mercury from the internal surfaces of pipework was evaluated by chemical treatment of the pipe sections under laboratory conditions. In-situ decontamination can be performed by a number of applications, including (i) the use of chemical pig trains in pipelines, (ii) closed loop circulation of chemical around topside process equipment and (iii) high pressure spraying of large surface areas such as storage tanks, FSO / FPSO vessels. The mercury waste generated is treated, on site or off site, to minimise the volume and disposed of in accordance with international regulations. An all-encompassing mercury decontamination solution is described. Trials involving the chemical treatment of steel sections have demonstrated that more than 97% of the mercury deposited can be removed from the internal surfaces of pipelines and safely disposed of, significantly reducing the risk of (i) mercury release to the environment and (ii) worker exposure to mercury during smelting activities.
Tracking Mercury Contaminant in the Subsurface

Abstract:Abstract In 2019, Australia led all Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) exporters in incremental growth (IGU World LNG report, 2019), supported by the start-up of the Wheatstone and Ichthys LNG projects. Production and economic recovery of gas are affected by the association of chemical compounds naturally present at low to trace levels within natural gas such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and mercury. These contaminants generate a cascade of costly treatments and waste recovery efforts. If the level of mercury in a produced gas stream is higher than expected, the treatment process in the LNG plant rapidly reaches capacity and may cause shut-down of the facility or rejection of gas supply resulting in significant profitability impacts. There may also be long term consequences that could impact on the decommissioning of industrial infrastructures in the future. High mercury levels in produced gas have been reported in South East Asia and Australia (Chalkidis et al., 2020; Black and Saunders, 2018; Zeeshan and Manikandan, 2017). However, currently there are no standard method to accurately quantify the presence of mercury in gas in the reservoir. The highly absorbent and multi-speciated nature of mercury makes reliable gas sampling difficult and generally leads to gross under-predictions of quantity. The spatial distribution of mercury within the reservoir means mercury may not appear in the initial production phase and its presence in fluids may vary over the lifetime of the field. Understanding the source, the transport mechanism and the distribution of naturally present contaminants in the subsurface is critical for lowering their impact in industrial activity through avoidance. High mercury levels of about 1000 microgram per cubic meter (μg/Sm3) were reported in reservoir gas samples from a sand unit of the Gorgon gas field in the Northern Carnarvon Basin, Australia (Chevron Australia, 2014). Other gas samples from different depth intervals in the same well delivered readings below 20 μg/Sm3. The closest exploration well to GOR-1D (about 2.5 km), North Gorgon-1, has provided abundant core materials that were investigated to detect and understand the distribution of mercury in the rocks. Our research seeks to address some of the significant but remaining geoscientific knowledge gaps on the generation and distribution mechanisms of mercury in rocks, from source to accumulation in the subsurface. In this paper, we provide an assessment of the workflow by examining preliminary analytical results on the detection and quantification of mercury in rocks.
Elemental mercury adsorption on sulfur-impregnated porous carbon - a review

Abstract:The presence of elemental mercury in wellhead natural gas is an important industrial problem, since even low levels of mercury can damage cryogenic aluminium heat exchangers and other plant equipment. Mercury present in the natural gas stream will also dramatically shorten the useful life of precious metal catalysts. The present work reviews the overall process of elemental mercury removal in practice using non-regenerative adsorbents (e.g. sulfur-impregnated porous carbon), addressing the various influencing parameters such as the method of sulfur impregnation, the impregnation temperature, the sulfur to carbon ratio, the impregnation time, the impact of flue gas constituents, the effect of processing temperature, and the nature of any carbon-containing functional groups present. The distribution of elemental sulfur is found to be the key to developing an effective adsorbent, rather than quantity of sulfur impregnated. Modifying or developing an adsorbent for elemental mercury removal from natural gas needs a detail physical and chemical characteristics assessment of the adsorbent.

Abstract:Mixed-metal based adsorbents has attracted attention on syngas purification processes, because of its high H2S adsorption performance, efficiency, and stability in high operating temperature. However, studies on mixedmetal adsorbents are still limited to basic adsorption behavior of the absorbent. This review tries to provide a deep view on the research of H2S removal adsorbent based on mixed-metal oxide and potential future directions for the development of mixed-metal oxide as H2S adsorbent from syngas (e.g., Zn-Fe based adsorbents). Proper understanding of the synergy and manufacturing challenges for certain combination of various metal oxide could open the way for the synthesis of high performing H2S adsorbent. Additionally, better understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of these adsorbents is also needed to enhance and optimize their performance. To that end, this paper discusses current mixed-metal oxide adsorbents research situation, challenges, and possible future research directions.
Mercury Removal from Coal Combustion Flue Gas by Mechanochemically Sulfur Modified Straw Coke and Its Mercury Stability

Abstract:This work uses widely sourced rice straw as raw material, sulfur containing substances as modifiers, and mechanochemistry as modification methods to prepare the mechanochemical sulfur modified rice straw char mercury removal adsorbent (S-SC). The influence of modifiers, flue gas components, and the environmental stability of mercury removal products were systematically studied. The mechanochemical sulfur modification (elemental sulfur (ES), Na2S, NaHS) can improve the mercury removal performance of raw rice straw char (R-SC). It enhances mercury adsorption and capture. The ES is the best sulfur specie whose mercury removal rate firstly increases and then decreases as the amount of sulfur added increases. Sulfur modification promotes mercury forms convert to HgS (red) or even HgSO4 with higher thermal stability. The thiophene/elemental sulfur are the main sulfur species for promoting mercury removal. SO2 and NO inhibit mercury removal by ES-SC, while HCl has a promoting effect. As their concentration in the flue gas increases, the proportion of mercury removed by adsorption increases, and the adsorbed mercury transforms into a more thermally stable mercury form. The mercury forms of the spent ES-SC are mainly oxidized and residual form with TCLP leaching rate of zero, which has good environmental leaching stability.

Abstract:Abundance and forms of mercury in oil and gas have been increasingly paid attention to.There are mercury and its compounds in natural gas,condensate gas and crude oil.In natural gas,mercury exists exclusively in its elemental forms.Condensate gas and crude oil contain Hg of different forms,including elemental,organic,inorganic and suspended mercury.Hg stems from the hydrocarbon sources in natural gas,with Hg abundance higher in coal derived gas than in the oil derived gas.The abnormally high abundance of mercury in natural gas is related to the deep structure.Owing to its strong adsorption,Hg can easily form amalgams with a variety of metals causing problems in transportation pipeline or tank and other processing equipments,and even resulting in catastrophic events.So the abnormally high mercury must be removed from natural gas.
Mercury Speciation and Distribution in an Egyptian Natural Gas Processing Plant

Abstract:Unprocessed petroleum hydrocarbons often contain high concentrations of mercury (Hg), which can severely damage the metal components of a processing plant and pose a health risk to the workers and the natural environment. Although Hg removal units can significantly reduce the Hg concentration in the export products, they are often installed in the final stage of the processing plant, thus failing to protect the production facilities. In this study, Hg distribution within a natural gas processing plant was studied to identify the most effective place for a Hg removal unit. Additionally, the impact of sampling container materials and their acidification was evaluated, and Hg species in the condensate were quantified. Total Hg concentration was significantly higher in all samples stored in glass in comparison to that with plastic containers. However, the acidification effect of the containers was more pronounced for Hg in nonpolar solutions. Interestingly, the assessment of Hg distribution within the gas plant showed that the export gas is being enriched in Hg, whose concentration rose from 1.25 to 4.11 μg/Sm3 during the processing steps. The second stage separator was identified as the source of excess Hg, which partitioned from the liquid phase of condensate to the gas phase as a result of reduced operational pressure and temperature. The dominant Hg species found in the analyzed gas condensates were elemental Hg (Hg0) and inorganic Hg with the methylmercury fraction comprising up to 18%. However, it was also found that the % fraction of individual Hg species varied along the plant units most likely as a result of Hg0 migration to the export gas. Therefore, to protect all treatment facilities from Hg contamination, the Hg removal unit should be installed after the second stage compressor.

Abstract:Mercury contamination in soil, water and air is associated with potential toxicity to humans and ecosystems. Industrial activities such as coal combustion have led to increased mercury (Hg) concentrations in different environmental media. This review critically evaluates recent developments in technological approaches for the remediation of Hg contaminated soil, water and air, with a focus on emerging materials and innovative technologies. Extensive research on various nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanosheets and magnetic nanocomposites, for mercury removal are investigated. This paper also examines other emerging materials and their characteristics, including graphene, biochar, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as well as other materials such as clay minerals and manganese oxides. Based on approaches including adsorption/desorption, oxidation/reduction and stabilization/containment, the performances of innovative technologies with the aid of these materials were examined. In addition, technologies involving organisms, such as phytoremediation, algae-based mercury removal, microbial reduction and constructed wetlands, were also reviewed, and the role of organisms, especially microorganisms, in these techniques are illustrated.

Abstract:Mercury emitted from flue gas has been a typical kind of globally hazardous atmospheric pollutants. The efficient control is therefore significant for clean and sustainable industrial development. This paper focused on mercury emission behavior and the characteristics of typical industrial processes. Particularly, the work reviewed the control techniques and commented on the latest progress of harmless treatment techniques. It is found that non-ferrous metals smelting and coal combustion are the primary sources of atmospheric mercury, accounting for about 80% of the total emissions. Compared with controlling mercury emission from the source and the process, the end-of-pipe treatment technologies were characterized by high efficiency, with removal rate of Hgp exceeding 90%. During the flue gas purification process, mercury are merely separated, while the perniciousness is still existed. After heat treatment and plasma method, the mercury can be desorbed from the absorbents, through which the activity of adsorbents can be restored. Simultaneously, mercury can be purified into mercury by chelating agent, acid washing, and electrolysis, thereby realizing resource utilization. The paper also highlighted the advantages and constraints of emission control techniques, harmless and resourceful treatment. Abstract:The Minamata Convention proposes to reduce mercury (Hg) emissions from non-ferrous metal smelting. According to the Global Mercury Assessment report 2018, Hg emissions from non-ferrous smelting reach 14.9% of global Hg emissions. Existing air pollution control devices (APCDs) can effectively remove oxidized Hg (Hg2+) and particle-bound Hg (HgP) from non-ferrous smelting flue gases, but are less effective in removing elemental Hg (Hg0), so deep removal of Hg0 is needed. This paper comprehensively introduces the methods for the deep removal of Hg0 from non-ferrous metal smelting flue gas, including absorption (Boliden-Norzink scrubbing, thiourea solution scrubbing, predesulfurization-coabsorption method), adsorption (selenium filter adsorption, carbon filter adsorption, ultrafine nano-sulfur adsorption, metal sulfide adsorption) and other methods (condensation, catalytic oxidation, bioprocessing). The latest research progress of these techniques, including the technical principles, influencing factors and applicable conditions, is reviewed. We also compare the advantages and disadvantages of different methods. Finally, the challenges and research perspectives of these technologies are proposed. This review aims to provide some valuable guidance for the subsequent use and development of Hg removal technologies in the non-ferrous metal smelting industry.

Abstract:Mercury's neurotoxic effects have prompted the development of advanced control and remediation methods to meet stringent measures for industries with high-mercury feedstocks. Industries with significant Hg emissions, including artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM)-789.2 Mg year-1, coal combustion-564.1 Mg year-1, waste combustion-316.1 Mg year-1, cement production-224.5 Mg year-1, and non-ferrous metals smelting-204.1 Mg year-1, use oxidants and adsorbents capture Hg from waste streams. Oxidizing agents such as O3, Cl2, HCl, CaBr2, CaCl2, and NH4Cl oxidize Hg0 to Hg2+ for easier adsorption. To functionalize adsorbents, carbonaceous ones use S, SO2, and Na2S, metal-based adsorbents use dimercaprol, and polymer-based adsorbents are grafted with acrylonitrile and hydroxylamine hydrochloride. Adsorption capacities span 0.2-85.6 mg g-1 for carbonaceous, 0.5-14.8 mg g-1 for metal-based, and 168.1-1216 mg g-1 for polymer-based adsorbents. Assessing Hg contamination in soils and sediments uses bioindicators and stable isotopes. Remediation approaches include heat treatment, chemical stabilization and immobilization, and phytoremediation techniques when contamination exceeds thresholds. Achieving a substantially Hg-free ecosystem remains a formidable challenge, chiefly due to the ASGM industry, policy gaps, and Hg persistence. Nevertheless, improvements in adsorbent technologies hold potential.
Current status of advancement in remediation technologies for the toxic metal mercury in the environment: A critical review

Abstract:Currently, pollution due to heavy metals, in particular dissolved mercury, is a major concern for society and the environment. This work aims to evaluate the current scenario regarding the removal/elimination of mercury. Mercury removal through adsorption is mainly done through artificial resins and metallic-organic frameworks. In the case of the zinc organic framework, it was able to adsorb Hg2+, reaching an adsorption capacity of 802 mg g-1. As for the Hg(0) the coconut husk was found to have the lowest equilibrium time, 30 min, and the highest adsorption capacity of 956.2 mg g-1. Experimental reports and molecular simulation indicate that the adsorption of mercury and other chemical forms occurs due to electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, precipitation, complexation, chelation, and covalent bonds, according to the material nature. The reported thermodynamic results show that, in most cases, the mercury adsorption has an endothermic nature with enthalpy levels below 40 kJ mol-1. Thermal and chemical regeneration methods lead to a similar number of 5 cycles for different materials. The presence of other ions, in particular cadmium, lead, and copper, generates an antagonistic effect for mercury adsorption. Regarding the other current technologies, it was found that mercury removal is feasible through precipitation, phytoremediation, and marine microalgae; all these methods require constant chemicals or a slow rate of removal according to the conditions. Advanced oxidative processes have noteworthy removal of Hg(0); however, Fenton processes lead to mineralization, which leads to Fe2+ and Fe3+ in solution; sonochemical processes are impossible to scale up at the current technology level; and electrochemical processes consume more energy and require constant changes of the anode and cathode. Overall, it is possible to conclude that the adsorption process remains a more friendly, economical, and greener process in comparison with other processes.
The assessment and remediation of mercury contaminated sites: A review of current approaches

Abstract:Remediation of mercury (Hg) contaminated sites has long relied on traditional approaches, such as removal and containment/capping. Here we review contemporary practices in the assessment and remediation of industrial-scale Hg contaminated sites and discuss recent advances. Significant improvements have been made in site assessment, including the use of XRF to rapidly identify the spatial extent of contamination, Hg stable isotope fractionation to identify sources and transformation processes, and solid-phase characterization (XAFS) to evaluate Hg forms. The understanding of Hg bioavailability for methylation has been improved by methods such as sequential chemical extractions and porewater measurements, including the use of diffuse gradient in thin-film (DGT) samplers. These approaches have shown varying success in identifying bioavailable Hg fractions and further study and field applications are needed. The downstream accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in biota is a concern at many contaminated sites. Identifying the variables limiting/controlling MeHg production-such as bioavailable inorganic Hg, organic carbon, and/or terminal electron acceptors (e.g. sulfate, iron) is critical. Mercury can be released from contaminated sites to the air and water, both of which are influenced by meteorological and hydrological conditions. Mercury mobilized from contaminated sites is predominantly bound to particles, highly correlated with total sediment solids (TSS), and elevated during stormflow. Remediation techniques to address Hg contamination can include the removal or containment of Hg contaminated materials, the application of amendments to reduce mobility and bioavailability, landscape/waterbody manipulations to reduce MeHg production, and food web manipulations through stocking or extirpation to reduce MeHg accumulated in desired species. These approaches often rely on knowledge of the Hg forms/speciation at the site, and utilize physical, chemical, thermal and biological methods to achieve remediation goals. Overall, the complexity of Hg cycling allows many different opportunities to reduce/mitigate impacts, which creates flexibility in determining suitable and logistically feasible remedies.

Abstract:Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a promising technology for global carbon reduction. In the CLC system, mercury released during combustion is not only a hazardous pollutant but also a risk to the system safety because mercury can easily lead to the amalgamation and fracture of the decarbonizing equipment. Understanding the mercury release and migration characteristics is the foundation for the safe operation of the CLC system. The purpose of this study is to lay the scientific foundation for achieving deep mercury removal during the CLC of solid fuels. The mercury flow and distribution within the CLC system were discussed. The differences in mercury release between CLC and conventional combustion or gasification were analyzed. The influence mechanisms of the key factors, such as fuel type, temperature, atmosphere, and oxygen carrier, on the release and migration fate of mercury during the CLC processes were discussed. The removal mechanisms of elemental mercury in the CLC system were revealed. Finally, research perspectives on mercury control in the CLC system were proposed. This review includes a comprehensive review of the latest research progress on mercury emission control within the CLC system. The findings of this study can provide guidance for the development of the deep mercury removal technology during CLC processes and help break the bottleneck which restricts the long-term safe operation of the CLC system.

Abstract:The injection of adsorbent can effectively remove Hg from syngas, in which metal oxide based adsorbent (MOBA) is a promising adsorbent as their simultaneous adsorption and oxidation properties. This review summarized the influences and mechanisms of adsorbent composition, syngas component, and reaction temperature on Hg-0 removal by MOBA in syngas. The adsorption of Hg-0 by CeO2-based, Fe2O3-based, CuO-based, and V2O5-based MOBA belong to physisorption, the adsorption of Hg-0 by MnO2 and Co3O4 belong to chemisorption. The oxidation of Hg-0 by MOBA follows Mars-Maessen mechanism. The Hg-0 removal capacity of MOBA with different composition follows the descending sequence of V2O5 > MnO2 > Co3O4 > Fe2O3 > CuO(CeO2). H2S and HCl are beneficial to Hg-0 removal by MOBA, but CO, H-2, and H2O are harmful to Hg-0 removal by MOBA. The influence of H2S, HCl, and CO are affected by their concentration. Both HCl and H2S can mitigate the inhibition of CO and H-2 on Hg-0 removal by MOBA. The increase of temperature can both promote and inhibit Hg-0 removal by MOBA. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of three main regeneration methods of thermal regeneration, non-thermal plasma regeneration, and elution regeneration were respectively summarized, especially the prominent advantages of elution regeneration method were emphasized. Finally, further works about the development of spine MOBA, the synergistic removal of Hg-0 and H2S by MOBA, study at higher temperature range, and the application of elution regeneration method were summarized to provide some references for the application of MOBA on Hg-0 removal in syngas.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is one of the most toxic global pollutants of continuing concern, posing a severe threat to human health and wildlife. Due to its mobility, Hg is easily transported through the atmosphere and directly deposited onto water, sediments and soils or incorporated in biota. In groundwater, Hg concentrations can be influenced by either geogenic or anthropogenic sources, causing critical health effects such as damage to the respiratory and nervous systems. The geogenic sources of Hg include rocks and minerals containing Hg (cinnabar, organic-rich shales, and sulfide-rich volcanic) and geothermal fluids. The anthropogenic Hg sources include the combustion of fossil fuels, gold mining, chemical discharges from dental preparation, laboratory activities and legacy sites. In groundwater, the average background concentration of Hg is < 0.01 μg/L. Mercury can be mobilized into groundwater from geogenic or anthropogenic sources due to changes in redox potential (Eh), with concentrations reaching above the WHO drinking water standard of 1 μg/L. Under reducing conditions, microbial activity facilitates the reductive dissolution of FeOOH, causing the release of sorbed Hg 2+ into groundwater. The released Hg 2+ may be reduced to Hg 0 by either dissolved organic matter or Fe 2+ . The stability of Hg species (Hg 0 , Hg 2 2+ , Hg 2+ , MeHg) in groundwater is controlled by Eh and pH. While high Eh and low pH conditions can mobilize Hg from the solid into aqueous phases, the soil binding ability can sequestrate the mobilized Hg via adsorption of Hg 2+ by goethite, hematite, manganese oxides, hydrous ferric oxides, or organic matter restricting it from leaching into groundwater. During groundwater contamination, remediation using nanomaterials such as pumice-supported nanocomposite zero-valent iron, brass shavings, polyaniline-Fe3O4-silver diethyldithiocarbamate, and CoMoO/γ-Al2O3 has been documented. These promising emerging technologies utilize the principle of adsorption to remove up to 99.98 % of Hg from highly contaminated groundwater. This study presents an overview of groundwater contamination, remediation, complex biogeochemical processes, and a hydrogeochemical conceptual model concerning Hg's mobility, fate, and transport.

Abstract:Mercury is a toxic heavy metal pollutant that enters the environment through both natural and human-caused sources. The exposure effects of mercury on the human body are many and in order to minimize mercury concentrations, various studies have shown that microalgae have a high potential for heavy metal binding including mercury. This review paper explores the optimization of operating conditions, cultivation methods, and different reactor systems used for growing microalgae to generate well-grown cells or biomass that are being used to remove mercury. Additionally, it presents an overview and comparative analysis of research, on innovative techniques involving modified microalgae for mercury removal. The paper thoroughly examines the underlying mechanisms and critical factors involved in the process of removing mercury using microalgae. In doing so, it provides insights into the entire process of cultivating microalgae from its beginnings to using cultivated cells or biomass for mercury bioremediation. Moreover, the isotherms, kinetics, and recyclability of the biomass in this process are discussed. The review highlights several research gaps that need to be addressed, including: exploring transgenic algae and novel mechanisms for enhanced mercury removal; understanding the effect of temperature on mercury removal; evaluating the potential of living microalgae using modified strains and techniques, as most studies have focused on non-living biomass due to mercury toxicity; investigating recyclability across different strains, technologies, and eluting solutions; improving the technology's readiness level by conducting pilot-scale studies with real wastewater; validating findings under real-world conditions and addressing scalability and economic feasibility challenges; and conducting life cycle assessments to evaluate environmental impacts. Comprehensive research efforts are needed to advance the application of microalgae for mercury remediation, optimizing strains, processes, and addressing sustainability concerns. This research is a resource for advancing our understanding of using microalgae for mercury bioremediation and the potential, for environmental remediation practices.
