Abstract:Numerical coarsening is an approach that constructs coarsened shape (or basis) functions for simulating heterogeneous structures on a coarse mesh, and seeks the fine mesh solution on a finite dimensional space spanned by these shape functions. It avoids the challenging issue of conforming meshing, reduces computational costs while maintaining high simulation accuracy, and has huge potential in the simulation of composites or even complex CAD models in fictitious domain methods. The C1-continuity of the coarsened shape functions is of vital importance in determining the simulation quality, such as the continuity of stress solution, but till now has not been developed. In addressing the issue, the study proposes to construct coarsened shape functions using B-spline patches (piecewise surfaces in 2D or volumes in 3D). By carefully devising an intermediate interpolation patch that covers the coarse element boundaries, important properties of C1-continuity and partition of unity are achieved, being able to produce high simulation stability and accuracy. By being explicitly formulated as two sequent displacement mappings from coarse nodes to the boundary fine nodes and then to the interior fine nodes, the shape functions are cheaply derived with small efforts in solving a small-size linear system for each coarse element. Performance of the coarsened shape functions, implemented within the material point method (MPM), is demonstrated through various numerical examples in comparisons with benchmark results in terms of stability, simulation accuracy, and computational efficiency.

Abstract:In simulation of heat conduction with temperature-independent physical properties and boundary conditions (BCs), Galerkin residual analysis and variational analysis yield equivalent finite element method (FEM), the conventional FEM. However, if the properties and BCs are temperature-dependent, it is discovered that their derivatives further induce nonlinearity of FEM which consequently generates divergence between the two analyses. A general FEM, extension of variational analysis, is derived as general form of conventional FEM modeling nonlinear heat conduction. Numerical examples demonstrate that the general FEM produces results with considerably higher accuracy and stability and also possesses higher performances on conforming with both two analyses. Since general FEM degenerates to conventional FEM if derivatives are of small-amplitude or zero and its direct implementation to the entire domain is costive, general FEM is alternatively utilized as local refinement of governing equation only to points with significant derivatives. The strategy of local refinement is optimized to enhance efficiency.

Abstract:The wave finite element method was used to study the dynamic response under impact loading in a gradient non-homogeneous plate with a crack.The dynamic stress intensity factors(DSIFs) of the crack-tip can be obtained by interpolations for the width of a crack and the distance from the crack-end.A gradient non-homogeneous finite crack plate with the unidirectional linear elastic modulus under exponent attenuation impact load was concretely analyzed numerically.The results show that however the crack length and gradient parameter of the plate materials are changed,dynamic stress intensity factors at the crack-tip rapidly rise and then slowly fall with time.The crack-tip dynamic stress intensity factors decrease with the decrease of the crack length and the increase of the functionally gradient parameter.

Abstract:We study the convergence issue for the gradient algorithm (employing general step sizes) for optimization problems on general Riemannian manifolds (without curvature constraints). Under the assumption of the local convexity/quasi-convexity (resp. weak sharp minima), local/global convergence (resp. linear convergence) results are established. As an application, the linear convergence properties of the gradient algorithm employing the constant step sizes and the Armijo step sizes for finding the Riemannian $L^p$ ($p\in[1,+\infty)$) centers of mass are explored, respectively, which in particular extend and/or improve the corresponding results in \cite{Afsari2013}.

Abstract:This contribution presents an improved low-order 3D finite element formulation with hourglass stabilization using automatic differentiation (AD). Here, the former Q1STc formulation is enhanced by an approximation-free computation of the inverse Jacobian. To this end, AD tools automate the computation and allow a direct evaluation of the inverse Jacobian, bypassing the need for a Taylor series expansion. Thus, the enhanced version, Q1STc+, is introduced. Numerical examples are conducted to compare the performance of both element formulations for finite strain applications, with particular focus on distorted meshes. Moreover, the performance of the new element formulation for an elasto-plastic material is investigated. To validate the obtained results, a volumetric locking-free reference element based on scaled boundary parametrization is used. Abstract:Using the convex process theory we study the convergence issues of the iterative sequences generated by the Gauss–Newton method for the convex inclusion problem defined by a cone C and a smooth function F (the derivative is denoted by F′). The restriction in our consideration is minimal and, even in the classical case (the initial point x0 is assumed to satisfy the following two conditions: F′ is Lipschitz around x0 and the convex process Tx0, defined by Tx0⋅=F′(x0)⋅−C, is surjective), our results are new in giving sufficient conditions (which are weaker than the known ones and have a remarkable property being affine-invariant) ensuring the convergence of the iterative sequence with initial point x0. The same study is also made for the so-called convex-composite optimization problem (with objective function given as the composite of a convex function with a smooth map).

Abstract:The layer-upon-layer approach in additive manufacturing, open or closed cells in polymeric or metallic foams involve an intrinsic microstructure tailored to the underlying applications. Homogenization of such architectured materials creates metamaterials modeled by higher-gradient models, specifically when the microstructure's characteristic length is comparable to the length scale of the structure. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of various finite elements methods for solving problems in strain-gradient elasticity. We employ open-source packages from Firedrake and FEniCS. Different finite element formulations are tested: we implement Lagrange, Argyris, Hermite elements, a Hu--Washizu type (mixed) formulation, as well as isogeometric analysis with Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS). For the numerical study, we investigate one- and two-dimensional problems discussed in the literature of strain-gradient modeling. All developed codes are open-access to encourage research in Finite Element Method (FEM) based computation of generalized continua.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient and scalable approach for simulating inhomogeneous and non-linear elastic objects is introduced. Our numerical coarsening approach consists in optimizing non-conforming and matrix-valued shape functions to allow for predictive simulation of heterogeneous materials with non-linear constitutive laws even on coarse grids, thus saving orders of magnitude in computational time compared to traditional finite element computations. The set of local shape functions over coarse elements is carefully tailored in a preprocessing step to balance geometric continuity and local material stiffness. In particular, we do not impose continuity of our material-aware shape functions between neighboring elements to significantly reduce the fictitious numerical stiffness that conforming bases induce; however, we enforce crucial geometric and physical properties such as partition of unity and exact reproduction of representative fine displacements to eschew the use of discontinuous Galerkin methods. We demonstrate that we can simulate, with no parameter tuning, inhomogeneous and non-linear materials significantly better than previous approaches that traditionally try to homogenize the constitutive model instead.
Continuous Linear Finite Element Method for Biharmonic Problems on Surfaces

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative continuous linear finite element approach to effectively solve biharmonic problems on surfaces. The key idea behind this method lies in the strategic utilization of a surface gradient recovery operator to compute the second-order surface derivative of a piecewise continuous linear function defined on the approximate surface, as conventional notions of second-order derivatives are not directly applicable in this context. By incorporating appropriate stabilizations, we rigorously establish the stability of the proposed formulation. Despite the presence of geometric error, we provide optimal error estimates in both the energy norm and $L^2$ norm. Theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.

Abstract:Under compressive creep, visco-plastic solids experiencing internal mass transfer processes have been recently proposed to accommodate singular cnoidal wave solutions, as material instabilities at the stationary wave limit. These instabilities appear when the loading rate is significantly faster than the capability of the material to diffuse internal perturbations and lead to localized failure features (e.g., cracks and compaction bands). This type of solution, generally found in fluids, has strong nonlinearities and periodic patterns. Due to the singular nature of the solutions, the applicability of the theory is currently limited. Additionally, effective numerical tools require proper regularization to overcome the challenges that singularity induces. We focus on the numerical treatment of the governing equation using a nonlinear approach building on a recent adaptive stabilized finite element method. This method provides a residual representation to drive adaptive mesh refinement, a particularly useful feature for the problem at hand. We compare against analytical and standard finite element solutions to demonstrate the performance of our approach. We then investigate the sensitivity of the diffusivity ratio, main parameter of the problem, and identify multiple possible solutions, with multiple stress peaks. Finally, we show the evolution of the spacing between peaks for all solutions as a function of that parameter.

Abstract:For the stationary advection-diffusion problem the standard continuous Galerkin method is unstable without some additional control on the mesh or method. The interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is stable but at the expense of an increased number of degrees of freedom. The hybrid method proposed in [5] combines the computational complexity of the continuous method with the stability of the discontinuous method without a significant increase in degrees of freedom. We discuss the implementation of this method using the finite element library <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deal.ii" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and present some numerical experiments.

Abstract:The newly proposed Element Energy Projection(EEP) method has been applied to computing super-convergent solutions in one-dimensional C 1 FEM in this paper.General formulas based on EEP theorem were derived and illustrative numerical examples using two typical elements were given.Both theoretical analysis and numerical examples show that the EEP method also works very well for C1 problem and successfully gives super-convergent solutions for both displacements(deflections and rotations) and stresses(bending moments and shear forces) at any point on an element,and the accuracy of so-calculated solutions is well comparable to that of nodal displacements.Furthermore,the natural boundary conditions are exactly satisfied automatically by the EEP method.

Abstract:An alternative approach is proposed and applied to solve boundary value problems within the strain gradient elasticity theory. A mixed variation formulation of the finite element method (FEM) based on the concept of the Galerkin method is used. To construct finite-dimensional subspaces separate approximations of displacements, deformations, stresses, and their gradients are implemented by choosing the different sets of piecewise polynomial basis functions, interrelated by the stability condition of the mixed FEM approximation. This significantly simplifies the pre-requirement for approximating functions to belong to class C 1 and allows one to use the simplest triangular finite elements with a linear approximation of displacements under uniform or near-uniform triangulation conditions. Global unknowns in a discrete problem are nodal displacements, while the strains and stresses and their gradients are treated as local unknowns. The conditions of existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence of the solution on the problem's initial data are formulated for discrete equations of mixed FEM. These are solved by a modified iteration procedure, where the global stiffness matrix for classical elasticity problems is treated as a preconditioning matrix with fictitious elastic moduli. This avoids the need to form a global stiffness matrix for the problem of strain gradient elasticity since it is enough to calculate only the residual vector in the current approximation. A set of modeling plane crack problems is solved. The obtained solutions agree with the results available in the relevant literature. Good convergence is achieved by refining the mesh for all scale parameters. All three problems under study exhibit specific qualitative features characterizing strain gradient solutions namely crack stiffness increase with length scale parameter and cusp-like closure effect.

Abstract:The stabilized conforming nodal integration (SCNI) is currently widely employed in Galerkin meshfree formulation. A key ingredient of SCNI is the strain or gradient smoothing defined within a set of conforming nodal representative domains, which usually are formed by the auxiliary points in addition to the meshfree nodes. Nonetheless, these auxiliary points may significantly increase the storage requirement and computational cost of SCNI, in comparison with the direct nodal integration. In order to address this issue, a purely node-based consistent non-conforming gradient smoothing (CNGS) scheme is proposed herein to accelerate the Galerkin meshfree computation. In the proposed method, only the meshfree nodes are employed to construct overlapping and non-conforming nodal representative domains, which are then adopted for the nodal gradient smoothing operation. However, unlike the existing non-conforming gradient smoothing algorithms that commonly violate the integration consistency, the proposed method maintains the desirable integration consistency through a proportional separation between the nodal gradient smoothing domains and the nodal integration domains, which essentially ensures the meshfree solution accuracy. Meanwhile, due to the absence of auxiliary points in the gradient smoothing evaluation, the computational efficiency is substantially improved by the proposed method of CNGS compared with SCNI. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is well demonstrated by numerical results.

Abstract:For evaluating the stress gradient, a mathematical technique based on the stress field of lower-order C0 elements is developed in this paper. With nodal stress results and location information, an overdetermined and inconsistent equation of stress gradient is established and the minimum norm least squares solution is obtained by the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse. This technique can be applied to any element type in comparison with the superconvergent patch (SCP) recovery for the stress gradient, which requires the quadratic elements at least and has to invert the Jacobi and Hessian matrices. The accuracy and validity of the presented method are demonstrated by two examples, especially its merit of achieving high accuracy with lower-order linear C0 elements. This method can be conveniently introduced into the general finite element analysis programs as a postprocessing module.

A robust lower order mixed finite element method for a strain gradient elasticity model

Abstract:A robust nonconforming mixed finite element method is developed for a strain gradient elasticity (SGE) model. In two and three dimensional cases, a lower order $C^0$-continuous $H^2$-nonconforming finite element is constructed for the displacement field through enriching the quadratic Lagrange element with bubble functions. This together with the linear Lagrange element is exploited to discretize a mixed formulation of the SGE model. The robust discrete inf-sup condition is established. The sharp and uniform error estimates with respect to both the small size parameter and the Lamé coefficient are achieved, which is also verified by numerical results. In addition, the uniform regularity of the SGE model is derived under two reasonable assumptions.

Abstract:It is well-known that numerically approximating calculus of variations problems possessing a Lavrentiev Gap Phenomenon (LGP) is challenging, and the standard numerical methodologies such as finite element, finite difference, and discontinuous Galerkin methods fail to give convergent methods because they cannot overcome the gap. This paper is a continuation of a 2018 paper by Feng-Schnake, where a promising enhanced finite element method was proposed to overcome the LGP in the classical Manià's problem. The goal of this paper is to provide a complete $\Gamma$-convergence proof for this enhanced finite element method, hence establishing a theoretical foundation for the method. The crux of the convergence analysis is the construction of a new finite element interpolant that helps to build a recovery sequence for proving a $\Gamma$-convergence result due to its strong approximation properties in Sobolev spaces. Numerical tests are also provided to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:A multiscale computational framework to capture stress concentrations and localized nonlinearity in composite structures is presented. An enriched approximation space, constructed using the generalized finite element method (GFEM), is used to incorporate nonlinear, heterogeneous material behavior into coarse-scale models on the fly. Enrichment functions are constructed using the GFEM with global–local enrichment functions (GFEM gl ). The auxiliary local problems associated with the GFEM gl also define fine-scale constitutive behavior that is inherited by the coarse global problem. This allows a coarse homogenized global problem to learn about material heterogeneity and/or nonlinearity on the fly, considerably increasing the flexibility of the method. On top of the explicit definition of heterogeneity in local problems, the locally defined constitutive law can incorporate further levels of heterogeneity that are not explicitly modeled at the global scale. The proposed GFEM gl comes with the efficiency and scalability characteristic of the method and greatly increases the flexibility when applied to heterogeneous structures with localized material nonlinearity.
