Abstract:Perovskite-based solar cells are promising due to their rapidly improving efficiencies, but suffer from instability issues. Recently it has been claimed that one of the key contributors to the instability of perovskite solar cells is ion migration induced electrode degradation, which can be avoided by incorporating inorganic hole blocking layers (HBL) in the device architecture. In this work, we investigate the operational environmental stability of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite solar cells that contain either an inorganic or organic HBL, with only the former effectively blocking ions from migrating to the metal electrode. This is confirmed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measured on electrodes of degraded devices, where only electrodes of devices with an organic HBL show a significant iodine signal. Despite this, we show that when these devices are degraded under realistic operational conditions (i.e. constant illumination in a variety of atmospheric conditions), both types of devices exhibit nearly identical degradation behavior. These results demonstrate that contrary to prior suggestions, ion-induced electrode degradation is not the dominant factor in perovskite environmental instability under operational conditions.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskites are mixed electronic-ionic semiconductors. It is imperative to develop a deeper understanding of how ion-migration behavior in perovskites impacts the long-term operational stability of solar cells. In this work, we found that ion penetration from the perovskite layer into the adjacent organic hole-selective layer is a crucial cause of performance degradation in perovskite solar cells. The monovalent cation, namely, methylammonium (MA(+)), is the main ion species that penetrates into the organic hole-selective layer of Spiro-MeOTAD because of the built-in electric field during operation. The incorporation of MA(+) induces deep-level defects in the Spiro-MeOTAD layer and thereby deteriorates the hole-transporting ability of Spiro-MeOTAD, degrading solar cell performance. Our work points to two ways to improve the stability of perovskite solar cells: one is to insert a compact ion-blocking layer between Spiro-MeOTAD and perovskite, and the other is to find a hole-selective layer that is insensitive to extraneous ions (MA(+)).

Abstract:The triple-cation mixed halide perovskite Cs-0.05(MA(0.17)FA(0.83))(0.95)Pb(I0.83Br0.17)(3) emerges as one of the most promising candidates for photovoltaics due to superior optoelectronic properties, but the thermal stability is still a major challenge for the viability of perovskite solar cells towards commercialization. Herein, we firstly explore the thermal response of the photovoltaic performances to access device physical changes. It is shown that the efficiency loss originates from decreased charge mobility, increased trap density and generation of PbI2 charge recombination centers near the interface. In-depth analysis of evolutions in morphology, chemical composition, dynamic and electronic structure of the perovskite layer at the nanometer scales indicates that it is initial dangling bonds and vacancies on the imperfect surfaces decrease the activation energy and cause the perovskite decomposition in a layer-by-layer pathway sequentially from the film surface to bulk. Based on the results, a strategy of surface passivation to improve the thermal stability is demonstrated and discussed. This work for the first time provides insights into the physical and chemical change of such triple-cation perovskite and indicates that more effort should be invested in surface treatment for enhancing perovskite device stability.

Abstract:Stability is the critical issue in perovskite solar cell, one possible reason of degradation come from organic transport layers which we have used. Recently, we have adopted all metal oxide layers as the charge transport layers, which has significantly improved the device stability. The improvement come from the avoid the interfacial degradation and also the reaction between perovskite and metal electrode, such as Ag and Al. We showed the device with the efficiency of 16.1% and good stability in ambient air.
Ion Migration‐Induced Amorphization and Phase Segregation as a Degradation Mechanism in Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The operation of halide perovskite optoelectronic devices, including solar cells and LEDs, is strongly influenced by the mobility of ions comprising the crystal structure. This peculiarity is particularly true when considering the long‐term stability of devices. A detailed understanding of the ion migration‐driven degradation pathways is critical to design effective stabilization strategies. Nonetheless, despite substantial research in this first decade of perovskite photovoltaics, the long‐term effects of ion migration remain elusive due to the complex chemistry of lead halide perovskites. By linking materials chemistry to device optoelectronics, this study highlights that electrical bias‐induced perovskite amorphization and phase segregation is a crucial degradation mechanism in planar mixed halide perovskite solar cells. Depending on the biasing potential and the injected charge, halide segregation occurs, forming crystalline iodide‐rich domains, which govern light emission and participate in light absorption and photocurrent generation. Additionally, the loss of crystallinity limits charge collection efficiency and eventually degrades the device performance.

Abstract:Organic‐inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells are susceptible to multiple influencing factors such as moisture, oxygen, heat stress, ion migration. Given the complex practical working conditions for solar cells, a fundamental question is how different failure mechanisms collaborate and substantially accelerate the device degradation. In this study, it is found that ion migration can slow the reaction between oxygen and methylammonium lead iodide perovskite in light conditions. This is suggested since regions with local electric fields suffer from more severe decomposition. Here it is reported that cesium ions (Cs+) incorporated in perovskite lattice, with a moderate doping concentration (e.g. 5%), can function as stabilizers to efficiently interrupt such a synergistic effect between oxygen induced degradation and ion migration while retaining the high performance of perovskite solar cells. Both experimental and theoretical results suggest that 5% Cs+ ions incorporation simultaneously suppresses the formation of reactive superoxide ions ( <math>O2−</math>) as well as ion migration in perovskites by forming additional energy barriers. This A‐site cations engineering is also a promising strategy to circumvent the detrimental effect of oxygen molecules in FA‐based perovskites, which is important for developing high‐efficiency perovskite solar cells with enhanced stability.

Abstract:Commercialization of perovskite solar cells based on complex lead halides is mostly limited by the low stability of these devices under real solar cell operational conditions. Among the three major intrinsic stress factors affecting the performance of encapsulated solar cells, i.e. , heat, light, and electric field, the latter remains the least investigated. In this work, we demonstrate the impact of different hole-transport materials (HTMs), such as PEDOT:PSS, NiO x , PTAA and hybrid NiO x /PTAA on the electric field-induced degradation of p-i-n perovskite solar cells assembled using Cs x FA 1− x PbI 3 as the absorber material. While the applied electric bias was found to degrade all types of devices regardless of the used HTM, the cells assembled with PTAA and NiO x /PTAA interlayers appeared to be the most stable due to the higher chemical inertness of PTAA to other device components. Our results suggest that further rational design of new HTMs is necessary to make perovskite solar cells sufficiently stable for the targeted practical applications.

Abstract:Identifying the origin of intrinsic instability for organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) is crucial for their application in electronic devices, including solar cells, photodetectors, radiation detectors, and light-emitting diodes, as their efficiencies or sensitivities have already been demonstrated to be competitive with commercial available devices. Here we show that free charges in OIHPs, whether generated by incident light or by current-injection from electrodes, can reduce their stability, while efficient charge extraction effectively stabilizes the perovskite materials. The excess of both holes and electrons reduce the activation energy for ion migration within OIHPs, accelerating the degradation of OIHPs, while the excess holes and electrons facilitate the migration of cations or anions, respectively. OIHP solar cells capable of efficient charge-carrier extraction show improved light stability under regular operation conditions compared to an open-circuit condition where the photo-generated charges are confined in the perovskite layers.

Abstract:Improved understanding of the origins of instability during photovoltaic operation of perovskite solar cell materials must be established to overcome barriers to commercialization. In this study, we analyze the microscopic mechanisms of degradation in high-performing methylammonium free (FA 0.9 Cs 0.1 PbI 3 ) perovskite solar cells (PSC) over 600 hours of operation under stressors inherent to PV operation, including heat, illumination, and a load while excluding atmospheric effects by testing in a water-and oxygen-free atmosphere. While the PSCs exhibit reasonable thermal stability, they show considerable performance loss under constant illumination or stable power output. Synchrotron-based nanoprobe X-ray fluorescence and X-ray beam induced current (XRF/XBIC) measurements reveal segregation of current-blocking Cs-rich phases during stress testing. The decrease in performance correlates with the resulting number density of the Cs-rich clusters, which varies by stress condition. These findings unveil cation-dependent instability in FA0.9Cs0.1PbI3 perovskites and provide a framework for understanding the energy landscape in alloy perovskites to guide the engineering of long-lived halide perovskite devices.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHPs) solar cells are the most promising alternatives to traditional silicon solar cells, with a certified power conversion efficiency beyond 25%. However, the poor stability of OHIPs is one of the thorniest obstacles that hinder its commercial development. Among all the factors affecting stability, ion migration is prominent because it is unavoidable and intrinsic in OHIPs. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanism for ion migration and regulation strategies. Herein, the types of ions that may migrate in OHIPs are first discussed; afterward, the migrating channels are demonstrated. The effects of ion migration are further elaborated. While ion migration can facilitate the p-i-n structure in some cases, the current hysteresis and other adverse effects such as phase segregation in OHIPs attract widespread attention. Based on these, several recent strategies to suppress the ion migration are enumerated, including the introduction of alkali cations, organic additives, grain boundaries passivation, and employment of low-dimensional perovskites. Finally, the prospect for further modulating the ion migration and more stable perovskite solar cells is proposed.

Abstract:The operational instability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is known to mainly originate from the migration of ionic species (or charged defects) under a potential gradient. Compositional engineering of the "A" site cation of the ABX3 perovskite structure has been shown to be an effective route to improve the stability of PSCs. Here, the effect of size‐mismatch‐induced lattice distortions on the ion migration energetics and operational stability of PSCs is investigated. It is observed that the size mismatch of the mixed "A" site composition films and devices leads to a steric effect to impede the migration pathways of ions to increase the activation energy of ion migration, which is demonstrated through multiple theoretical and experimental evidence. Consequently, the mixed composition devices exhibit significantly improved thermal stability under continuous heating at 85 °C and operational stability under continuous 1 sun illumination, with an extrapolated lifetime of 2011 h, compared to the 222 h of the reference device.

Abstract:Due to light-induced effects in CH3NH3-based perovskites, such as ion migration, defects formation, and halide segregation, the degradation of CH3NH3-based perovskite solar cells under maximum power point is generally implicated. Here we demonstrated that the effect of light-enhanced ion migration in CH3NH3PbI3 can be eliminated by inorganic Cs substitution, leading to an ultrastable perovskite solar cell. Quantitatively, the ion migration barrier for CH3NH3PbI3 is 0.62 eV under dark conditions, larger than that of CsPbI2Br (0.45 eV); however, it reduces to 0.07 eV for CH3NH3PbI3 under illumination, smaller than that for CsPbI2Br (0.43 eV). Meanwhile, photoinduced halide segregation is also suppressed in Cs-based perovskites. Cs-based perovskite solar cells retained >99% of the initial efficiency (10.3%) after 1500 h of maximum power point tracking under AM1.5G illumination, while CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells degraded severely after 50 h of operation. Our work reveals an uncovered mechanism for stability improvement by inorganic cation substitution in perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites materials have gained a lot of attention due to its unprecedented growth within a decade in optoelectronic device applications. However, stability of the hybrid perovskite materials especially under sunlight and heat remains one of the major threats for potential commercialization. There are numerous reports on improved photo and thermal stability of the perovskite materials, but the ultimate goal is not yet achieved. The migration of ions in these materials under illumination and in the presence of heat is the root cause of photo and thermal instability. In this chapter, some of the major pathways and mechanism related to the ion migration is discussed. The presence of ionic defects/vacancies is responsible for ion migration. However, the activation energy barrier for the migration of ions/vacancies depends on multiple factors, such as nature of ions, crystal structure and migration pathways. Some of the proposed mechanism of vacancy-mediated ion migration is also discussed. The migration of ions can be quasi-reversible as some of the migrated ions get stuck at the grain boundary or at the perovskite/charge transport layer interface. The charge transport in these materials therefore gets modulated with the ionic conductivity. As the perovskite active layer gets degraded, the ionic conductivity increases, mainly due to the increased vacancies. There have been some experimental evidences that the activation energy barrier gets reduced upon heating due to lattice expansion. Therefore, the choice of perovskite is important as the lattice expansion can be minimized by some combinatorial approach of mixed halide as well as mixed cationic perovskite materials. It is evident from the experiment as well as from the first-principles density-functional theory that the crystal structure with fewer defects not only has superior optoelectronic properties but also has improved stability under adverse environmental condition. Therefore, the key research of perovskite-based optoelectronic devices should be focused on the synthesis of defect-free large crystals with reduced ion migration.

Abstract:Organo lead halide perovskite materials like methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) and formamidinium lead iodide (HC(NH2)2PbI3) show superb opto-electronic properties. Based on these perovskite light absorbers, power conversion efficiencies of the perovskite solar cells employing hole transporting layers have increased from 9.7% to 20.1% within just three years. Thus, it is apparent that perovskite solar cell is a promising next generation photovoltaic technology. However, the unstable nature of perovskite was observed when exposing it to continuous illumination, moisture and high temperature, impeding the commercial development in the long run and thus becoming the main issue that needs to be solved urgently. Here, we discuss the factors affecting instability of perovskite and give some perspectives about further enhancement of stability of perovskite solar cell.

Abstract:What causes the instability of perovskite solar cells has been a puzzling problem impeding the development of commercial panels. So far there is limited evidence on the link between device instability and the various materials in each of the stacked layers. Here, we study the chemistry and distribution of various species and the integrity of the functional layers in high-performance inverted perovskite solar cells, with and without an electric field. The distribution of the diffusion species and its impact on the chemical and electronic structures through the transporting layers are measured by photoemission spectroscopy combined with damage-free ion beam sputtering. We find that various species, such as I 2 and PbI 2 , are distributed throughout the organic transporting layers toward the electrode interface. These species are found to be charge neutral, have no impact on the Fermi level, and react little with copper. An electric field, however, can catalyze the electro-decomposition of the perovskite, causing chemical heterogeneity and degradation in device performance.

Abstract:Impressive progress in halide perovskite solar cells motivates further work to improve operating stability. It is known that ion-migration-driven decomposition represents a degradation pathway in perovskite solar cells and that it can occur within the perovskite material even in well-encapsulated devices. Here we find that quasi-two-dimensional (2.5D) perovskites suppress this ion migration-induced degradation. Using TOF-SIMS, we confirm that iodide migration occurs in bulk perovskite photovoltaic devices operating at their maximum power point (MPP). We observe that iodine ions migrate across the spiro-OMeTAD layer to the Spiro/gold contact interface, oxidizing and deteriorating the gold at the interface. In contrast, we find that large < n > 2.5D perovskites exhibit a significantly reduced rate of ion migration compared to 3D devices and exhibit less than 1% relative PCE loss in over 80 h of continuous operation at MPP, whereas the PCE of 3D devices diminishes by more than 50% within the first 24 h.

Abstract:The different textures of a polymer and self‐assembled monolayer hole transport layers strongly impact the vertical compositional stratification in the perovskite active layer. Specifically, triple cation perovskite layers deposited on the smooth texture of polymers such as PTAA result in a MAPbI3‐like composition at the buried interface, leading to enhanced ion migration and thus, poor device stability. Despite the striking increase in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of lead‐based perovskite solar cells (PSCs), their poor operational stability impedes their commercialization. Among the various factors that influence device stability, ion migration has been identified as a key driver of degradation. In this work, the focus is on studying ion migration‐induced degradation in inverted architecture PSCs, which employ either a thin polymer layer or a self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) for hole extraction. It is demonstrated that the difference in texture imposed by the use of these hole transport layers (HTL) is an important and thus far inconspicuous factor that impacts ion migration, and consequently device stability. By investigating the buried interface in detail, it is revealed that its texture has a strong impact on the vertical compositional stratification in the perovskite active layer. By monitoring bias‐induced ion migration in devices with different hole extraction layers, it is demonstrated that the smooth polymer‐based HTL results in a higher degree of ion migration than the rough SAM HTL, corresponding to a stronger degradation in the former. These results further indicate that the use of SAMs for hole extraction is a promising strategy to suppress ion migration and improve device efficiency.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites are emerging as the most promising candidate for the next-generation photovoltaics (PV) materials, due to their superior optoelectronic properties and low cost. However, the resulting perovskite solar cells (PSCs) suffer from poor stability. In particular, the temperature and light activated ionic defects within the perovskite lattice, as well as electric-field-induced migration of ionic defects, make the PSCs unstable at operating condition, even with device encapsulation. There is no doubt that the investigation of ion migration is crucial for the development of PSCs with high intrinsic stability. In this review, we first briefly introduce the origin and pathways of ion migration, and also the essential characterization methods to identify ion migration. Next, we discuss the impact of ion migration on the perovskite films and cells with respect to photoelectric properties and stability. Then, several representative strategies to suppress ion migration are systematically summarized in the context of composition engineering, additive engineering and interface engineering, with an in-depth understanding on the underlying mechanisms which may provide more clues for further fabrication of PSCs with improved stability. Finally, a perspective with some suggestion on future research directions and chemical approaches are provided to alleviate ion migration in perovskite materials and the entire devices.

Interfacial Degradation of Planar Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The stability of perovskite solar cells is one of the major challenges for this technology to reach commercialization, with water believed to be the major degradation source. In this work, a range of devices containing different cathode metal contacts in the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MAPbI(3)/PCBM/Metal are fully electrically characterized before and after degradation caused by steady illumination during 4 h that induces a dramatic reduction in power conversion efficiency from values of 12 to 1.8%. We show that a decrease in performance and generation of the S-shape is associated with chemical degradation of the metal contact. Alternatively, use of Cr2O3/Cr as the contact enhances the stability, but modification of the energetic profile during steady illumination takes place, significantly reducing the performance. Several techniques including capacitance voltage, X-ray diffraction, and optical absorption results suggest that the properties of the bulk perovskite layer are little affected in the device degradation process. Capacitance-voltage and impedance spectroscopy results show that the electrical properties of the cathode contact are being modified by generation of a dipole at the cathode that causes a large shift of the flat-band potential that modifies the interfacial energy barrier and impedes efficient extraction of electrons. Ionic movement in the perovskite layer changes the energy profile close to the contacts, modifying the energy level stabilization at the cathode. These results provide insights into the degradation mechanisms of perovskite solar cells and highlight the importance to further study the use of protecting layers to avoid the chemical reactivity of the perovskite with the external contacts.

Abstract:The device preconditioning dependent hysteresis and the consequential performance degradation hinder the actual performance and stability of the perovskite solar cells. Ion migration and charge trapping in the perovskite with large contribution from grain boundaries are the most common interpretations for the hysteresis. Yet, the high performing devices often include intermediate hole and electron transporting layers, which can further complicate the dynamical process in the device. Here, by using Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy and Confocal Photoluminescence Microscopy, we elucidate the impact of charge-transporting layers and excess MAI on the spatial and temporal variations of the photovoltage on the MAPbI3-based solar cells. By studying the devices layer by layer, we found that the light-induced ion migration occurs predominantly in the presence of an imbalanced charge extraction in the solar cells, and the charge transporting layers play crucial role in suppressing it. Careful selection and processing of the electron and hole-transporting materials are thus essential for making perovskite solar cells free from the ion migration effect.
