Abstract:Vapor intrusion (VI) risk assessments determine the cleanup level of groundwater in the absence of ingestion. In recent VI investigations, the building pressure cycling (BPC) method has been applied to help minimize ambiguity caused by temporal variability of indoor air samples that are important to risk assessments, and, consequently, determine groundwater cleanup level accurately. In this study, we use a three-dimensional numerical model to examine the dynamic migration of VOCs from groundwater after the application of BPC. First, we validated the numerical model with field measurements. Then, the verified model is used to investigate the effects of site-specific features in determining the performance of BPC operation. At last, we summarize past field applications of BPC to examine the simulated results. Our study indicates that the BPC-induced indoor depressurization can increase the building loading rate in the first 2–3 h, which would then drop to 2–3 times of that with natural conditions in most cases of groundwater contamination. In some cases involving a strong source, e.g., a vapor source above the capillary fringe or a groundwater source with sandy soil above the groundwater level, the normalized building loading rates can be maintained as high as 4–9 without decrease after the first 2–3 h. Significantly higher increase in building loading rate may indicate a potential presence of a preferential pathway between the groundwater contamination and concerned building.

Abstract:Soil texture is believed to play a significant role in the migration of subsurface volatile chemicals into buildings at contaminated sites, an exposure process known as vapor intrusion (VI). In this study, we investigated the role of soil texture in determining the attenuation of contaminant soil gas concentration from groundwater source to receptor building. We performed soil column experiments, numerical simulations, and statistical analysis of the USEPA's VI database. The soil column experiments were conducted with commercial sand and soils with sand and sandy loam textures. Measured one‐dimensional soil gas concentration profiles were compared with numerical predictions. Good agreement between experiments and model results supports the use of the classical multiphase chemical transport equation for simulating contaminant vapor transport from groundwater through the vadose zone. A full three‐dimensional numerical model was then used to simulate typical VI scenarios with groundwater sources. Results indicate that, although soil particle texture can play a role in determining subslab‐to‐indoor air concentration attenuation, there is no obvious relationship between soil particle size and groundwater source‐to‐subslab except in the case of a shallow contaminant source. This conclusion is consistent with results reported in USEPA's VI database, in which variation in soil particle size does not affect source‐to‐subslab attenuation factors but does influence subslab‐to‐indoor air concentration attenuation factors by an average of about 0.4 order of magnitude. This finding suggests that an appropriate focus of VI site investigation should include the shallow soil beneath the building foundation.Core Ideas Soil particle size is not important in source‐to‐subslab processes, except for shallow sources. Soil particle size affects subslab‐to‐indoor air concentration attenuation. Investigators should focus on the shallow soil beneath the building foundation.

Abstract:At petroleum vapor intrusion (PVI) sites at which there is significant methane generation, upward advective soil gas transport may be observed. To evaluate the health and explosion risks that may exist under such scenarios, a one-dimensional analytical model describing these processes is introduced in this study. This new model accounts for both advective and diffusive transport in soil gas and couples this with a piecewise first-order aerobic biodegradation model, limited by oxygen availability. The predicted results from the new model are shown to be in good agreement with the simulation results obtained from a three-dimensional numerical model. These results suggest that this analytical model is suitable for describing cases involving open ground surface beyond the foundation edge, serving as the primary oxygen source. This new analytical model indicates that the major contribution of upward advection to indoor air concentration could be limited to the increase of soil gas entry rate, since the oxygen in soil might already be depleted owing to the associated high methane source vapor concentration.

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure fluctuations can induce subsurface airflow, affecting Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) contaminant migration in the vadose zone. When modeling this process, traditional vapor intrusion models have relied on the assumption of local equilibrium conditions and neglected kinetic mass transfer processes among different phases. In this study, a nonequilibrium multiphase flow and transport model was developed to investigate the impact of atmospheric pressure fluctuations on VOC release from groundwater to the atmosphere. Kinetic mass transfer processes between vapor & liquid phases, and between liquid & solid phases were taken into consideration. A series of soil column experiments with downward/upward pumped gas flow were conducted to validate the model. The experimental results imply the necessity to use nonequilibrium models for quantifying the impact of atmospheric pressure fluctuation. The validated model was used to investigate the role of atmospheric pressure fluctuations for various practical hydrogeologic settings under daily pressure fluctuations. It was found that when the soil organic carbon content is relatively large, the nonequilibrium model more accurately represents VOC migration than a traditional equilibrium model. Therefore, this study suggests the need to apply nonequilibrium vapor intrusion models at sites with high soil organic matter content.
Evaluation of Site-Specific Lateral Inclusion Zone for Vapor Intrusion Based on an Analytical Approach

Abstract:In 2002, U.S. EPA proposed a general buffer zone of approximately 100 feet (30 m) laterally to determine which buildings to include in vapor intrusion (VI) investigations. However, this screening distance can be threatened by factors such as extensive surface pavements. Under such circumstances, EPA recommended investigating soil vapor migration distance on a site-specific basis. To serve this purpose, we present an analytical model (AAMLPH) as an alternative to estimate lateral VI screening distances at chlorinated compound-contaminated sites. Based on a previously introduced model (AAML), AAMLPH is developed by considering the effects of impervious surface cover and soil geology heterogeneities, providing predictions consistent with the three-dimensional (3-D) numerical simulated results. By employing risk-based and contribution-based screening levels of subslab concentrations (50 and 500 μg/m(3), respectively) and source-to-subslab attenuation factor (0.001 and 0.01, respectively), AAMLPH suggests that buildings greater than 30 m from a plume boundary can still be affected by VI in the presence of any two of the three factors, which are high source vapor concentration, shallow source and significant surface cover. This finding justifies the concern that EPA has expressed about the application of the 30 m lateral separation distance in the presence of physical barriers (e.g., asphalt covers or ice) at the ground surface.
Effects of Rate-Limited Mass Transfer on Modeling Vapor Intrusion with Aerobic Biodegradation

Abstract:Most of the models for simulating vapor intrusion accept the local equilibrium assumption for multiphase concentration distributions, that is, concentrations in solid, liquid and vapor phases are in equilibrium. For simulating vapor transport with aerobic biodegradation controlled by counter diffusion processes, the local equilibrium assumption combined with dual-Monod kinetics and biomass decay may yield near-instantaneous behavior at steady state. The present research investigates how predicted concentration profiles and fluxes change as interphase mass transfer resistances are increased for vapor intrusion with aerobic biodegradation. Our modeling results indicate that the attenuation coefficients for cases with and without mass transfer limitations can be significantly different by orders of magnitude. Rate-limited mass transfer may lead to larger overlaps of contaminant vapor and oxygen concentrations, which cannot be simulated by instantaneous reaction models with local equilibrium mass transfer. In addition, the contaminant flux with rate-limited mass transfer is much smaller than that with local equilibrium mass transfer, indicating that local equilibrium mass transfer assumption may significantly overestimate the biodegradation rate and capacity for mitigating vapor intrusion through the unsaturated zone. Our results indicate a strong research need for field tests to examine the validity of local equilibrium mass transfer, a widely accepted assumption in modeling vapor intrusion.
Investigating the role of vadose zone breathing in vapor intrusion from contaminated groundwater

Abstract:The fluctuation of the groundwater table can cause upward and downward advection of soil gas within the vadose zone, just like breathing. In this study, we developed a three-dimensional numerical model and used it to investigate the role of vadose zone breathing in vapor intrusion, through which subsurface volatile chemicals migrate into the concerned building at contaminated sites. The developed model was first applied to a sand tank experiment, followed by examining the influences of fluctuation amplitude and period of water table, soil textures, and groundwater level depth. Our results suggest that the indoor pollutant concentration can be increased by about three times with the oscillatory water table of 0.4 m amplitude and 4 d period. Within one cycle of vadose zone breathing, the indoor pollutant concentration is found to vary by about 7 orders of magnitude. The results also show that, compared to the groundwater level depth, the soil texture plays a significant role in determining vapor intrusion risks. Specifically, when soil particles increase from 0.25 mm to 0.44 mm, the indoor pollutant concentration tends to increase and becomes more sensitive to groundwater table fluctuation.

Abstract:SummaryOne‐dimensional mathematical models for vapor‐phase volatile organic compound (VOC) diffusion through composite cover barriers are presented. An analytical solution to the model was obtained by the method of separation of variables. The results obtained by the proposed solution agree well with those obtained by a numerical analysis. Based on the proposed analytical model, the VOC breakthrough curves of five different composite covers are compared. The effects of degree of saturation of geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) or compacted clay liner (CCL) on VOC migration in the composite covers are then presented. Results show that the composite cover barriers provide much better diffusion barriers for VOC than the single CCL. The top surface steady‐state flux for a composite barrier, consisting of a 1.5 mm geomembrane (GM) and a 20 cm CCL, can be 8.3 times lower than that for a 30 cm CCL. The surface steady‐state flux for the case with (1.5 mm GM + 6 mm GCL) was found to be 2.3 times lower than that for the case with (1.5 mm GM + 20 cm CCL). The degree of saturation Sr of the CCL has a great influence on VOC migration in composite covers when Sr is larger than 0.5. The steady‐state flux at the surface of GM for the case with Sr = 0.7 can be 1.8 times lower than that for the case with Sr = 0.2. The proposed analytical model is relatively simple and can be used for verification of complicated numerical models, analysis of experimental data and performance assessment of composite cover barriers. Simulating the fate and transport of TCE from groundwater to indoor air

Abstract:This work provides an exploratory analysis on the relative importance of various factors controlling the fate and transport of volatile organic contaminants (in this case, TCE) from a DNAPL source zone located below the water table and into the indoor air. The analysis is conducted using the multi-phase compositional model CompFlow Bio, with the base scenario problem geometry reminiscent of a field experiment conducted by Rivett [Rivett, M.O., (1995), Soil-gas signatures from volatile chlorinated solvents: Borden field experiments. Groundwater, 33(1), 84-98.] at the Borden aquifer where groundwater was observed to transport a contaminant plume a substantial distance without vertical mass transport of the contaminant across the capillary fringe and into the vadose zone. Results for the base scenario model indicate that the structure of the permeability field was largely responsible for deflecting the groundwater plume upward towards the capillary fringe, permitting aqueous phase diffusion to transport the TCE into the vadose zone. Alternative permeability realizations, generated as part of a Monte Carlo simulation process, at times deflected the groundwater plume downwards causing the extended thickness of the saturated zone to insulate the vadose zone from exposure to the TCE by upward diffusive transport. Comparison of attenuation coefficients calculated using the CompFlow Bio and Johnson and Ettinger [Johnson, P.C. and Ettinger, R.A., (1991), Heuristic model for predicting the intrusion rate of contaminant vapors into buildings. Environmental Science and Technology, 25, 1445-1452.] heuristic model exhibited fortuitous agreement for the base scenario problem geometry, with this agreement diverging for the alternative permeability realizations as well as when parameters such as the foundation slab fracture aperture, the indoor air pressure drop, the capillary fringe thickness, and the infiltration rate were varied over typical ranges.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to report on the development and implementation of the Healthy Habits through Literacy curriculum and to extend our knowledge of the utility of concept maps to assess the complexity of preschool and prekindergarten children's knowledge structures. Healthy Habits through Literacy was designed to combat the rise in childhood obesity by building the background knowledge and concept development of health related topics. The curriculum supports the goal of improving readiness outcomes for preschool children by utilizing strategies that help children develop visible thinking strategies including concept mapping. Implementation of Healthy Habits through Literacy afforded researchers the opportunity to develop and test a protocol for constructing concept maps from transcribed interviews of young preschool children, estimate the associations of concept map scores and measures of vocabulary development and school readiness, and to extend our knowledge of the utility of concept map scores to quantify the represented knowledge structures of 3-year-old preschool children. The estimated reliability for mapping and scoring the transcribed interviews was .95. The children's concept map scores were positively associated with their standardized achievement scores on the EVT-2 (.29) and the BBCS-3:R Self-/Social Awareness scores (.49).
Analytical Solution for One-Dimensional Steady-State VOCs Diffusion in Simplified Capillary Cover Systems

Abstract:The analytical solution for a one-dimensional and steady-state model is proposed to investigate the diffusion of VOCs within landfill capillary cover systems under unsaturated water flow and stable conditions. Examples of coupled water flow and VOCs diffusion are evaluated by the proposed analytical solution to discuss the effects of the evaporation rate and clay thickness. The proficiency of the unsaturated cover system in minimising VOC emissions was also investigated. It was found that the non-uniform distribution of water content can cause one order of magnitude reductions in the effective diffusion coefficient of VOCs, resulting in the attenuation of VOCs in the cover system. The concentration profile of VOCs is lower for the case with a larger evaporation rate. Ignoring the non-uniform distribution of water content induced by water flow would underestimate the surface flux of VOCs by a factor of 1.8. The water content and VOC concentration in the cover system can be effectively diminished with the thickness of the clayey layer increasing. The surface flux of VOCs is considerably decreased with increasing thickness of clayey layer. Increasing the thickness of clayey layer from 0.2 to 1 m leads to a reduction in the surface flux of VOCs by a factor of 2.9. The sensitivity analysis provides further insights into the critical role of water flow in affecting VOC transport through the unsaturated cover system. The outcomes highlight that the impacts of unsaturated water flow within the covering system should be considered for assessment of VOC emissions.

Abstract:<p>The soil gas concentration attenuation in lateral diffusive transport determines the influence area of a contamination plume in soil vapor intrusion, a major exposure pathway of volatile chemicals at contaminated sites. In this study, we utilize both physical and mathematical models to investigate the roles of soil geology heterogeneities and impermeable surface pavements in determining the attenuation of contaminant soil gas concentration. The results indicate that the attenuation of soil gas concentration with lateral diffusion is observed to be the most significant if with a low-permeability soil layer at the bottom and a high-permeability layer on top, followed by the cases with the uniform soil properties, and the lateral attenuation is the least significant in cases with a high-permeability soil layer at the bottom and a low-permeability soil layer on top, regardless of the surface coverage. Compared to soil heterogeneity, the influences of surface conditions are less significant, and the capping effect of surface cover can only play a role in determining shallow soil gas concentration profiles. Analytical Model for Volatile Organic Compound Transport in the Coupled Vadose Zone-Groundwater System

Abstract:A 3D mathematical model that describes transport of volatile organic compounds in a coupled vadose-saturated zone system is proposed. The subsurface processes incorporated in the model include advection, dispersion, interphase mass transfer, and diffusive mass exchange between two horizontal porous media formations, as well as the time-dependent mass loading from a source zone. The analytical solutions are derived subject to the specific initial and boundary conditions. The solutions are evaluated by numerical Laplace inverse transform. The model solutions can be used to study the fate and transport in subsurface formations composed of a vadose zone and a water table aquifer, where the volatile organic compound is released from entrapped nonaqueous phase liquid in the vadose zone, or the dissolved volatile organic compound transports with groundwater accompanied by diffusive mass transfer into the overlying soil formations. Mass transfer between two layers is demonstrated to have back-diffusion characteristics, which results in secondary contamination and retains low levels of contaminant concentrations over a prolonged period of time. The model solutions are specifically useful in assessing the vapor intrusion process in a contaminated site where a vadose zone is underlain by a water table aquifer contaminated with volatile organic compounds.
Numerical Analysis of Moisture and Gas Transport in Earthen Final Covers Considering Effects of Vapor and Temperature Gradient

Abstract:Biochemical decomposition of high kitchen wastes in landfills in China results in (i) a high content of vapor in landfill gas (LFG) and (ii) a noticeable temperature gradient across the earthen final cover (EFC). Yet, it is unclear how vapor and temperature gradients affect moisture and gas transport through EFC and microbial aerobic methane oxidation (MAMO). A theoretical model of moisture-gas-heat reactive transport considering MAMO and effects of vapor flow and temperature gradients was developed, and a series of parametric studies were included. The model was verified by published test results. The parametric simulation results show that vapor from landfill wastes can replenish water to EFCs in dry seasons, which results in (i) the relief of water shortage of vegetation and MAMO and (ii) LFG emission reduction. Effects of vapor inflow become more significant under larger temperature gradient. In cold seasons, temperature gradients can promote MAMO to reduce methane emissions, and enhance evaporation to reduce percolation. When evaporation rate at the surface exceeds 30 times vapor influx, vapor inflow has negligible effects on moisture and gas transport in EFCs. Neglecting effects of vapor and temperature gradient can lead to misjudgments on anti-seepage performance and methane emission reduction performance of EFCs.
Analytical Model for Transient Coupled Consolidation and Contaminant Transport in Landfill Liner System

Abstract:Analytical model for transient contaminant transport in clay barrier under combined effects of diffusion, adsorption and consolidation processes are developed. The generalized integral transform technique (GITT) is adopted to successfully derive the analytical solutions. The proposed analytical model is validated by experimental results. The analytical models are applied to develop an understanding of how contaminant migration is governed by a combination of the consolidation and diffusion processes. The effects of effective diffusivity, hydraulic conductivity, void ratio and adsorption coefficient are investigated. It was demonstrated that the consolidation model with large displacement induces the shortest breakthrough time compared to the consolidation model with small displacement and no consolidation model. The settlement, advection and spatial variation of the void ratio induced by large displacement model are attributable to an earlier breakthrough of contaminant. The advection flux induced by consolidation is an important component to develop an accurate assessment of contaminant migration in deforming clay barrier. The contribution of advection process to total contaminant flux can reach 29%. The results indicate that coupled consolidation and contaminant migration models are necessary to design a conservative clay barrier. The proposed analytical model also provides modelling benchmarks to examine the accuracy of alternative multi-physics numerical models.
Importance of Advection-Driven Soil Vapor Intrusion: Effects of Atmospheric and Indoor Pressure Variations

Abstract:The vapor intrusion (VI) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a major concern due to their acute and chronic toxicities to indoor human. VI could be more problematic by pressure-driven advection and this could be particularly notable in residential areas. This study introduces a numerical model designed to simulate the transport of VOCs by diffusion as well as advection in unsaturated zone. The model is validated with analytical models suggesting its ability to simulate complex VI scenarios with high fidelity. Using the developed model, several VI scenarios are investigated by considering the episodic changes of atmospheric pressure as well as ventilation system induced indoor pressure changes in an TCE contaminated site. The model simulation shows that relatively lower atmospheric pressures compare to those in indoor environment facilitate TCE migration to the atmosphere leading to less TCE intrusion into indoor environment. This is the case when the indoor pressure is greater than those in atmosphere. On the other hand, when the indoor pressure in building is lower than those in atmosphere and when the pressure in atmosphere is higher than those in indoor, more TCE is intruded inside the indoor of building through the subsurface building cracks leading to the increased TCE levels and human exposure risks. This work not only advances our understanding of VI dynamics but also provides a robust tool for predicting indoor VOC concentrations under varying environmental conditions, especially when pressure driven advection becomes an important transport process in unsaturated zone.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the soil gas concentration attenuation with diffusive transport in lateral and vertical transport in cases with surface pavements with a pilot-scale tank. Three scenarios were investigated, one with a completely open soil surface and the other two involving partially paved soil surface. The results, on the one hand, indicate that the soil gas concentration generally decreases linearly and exponentially in the vertical and horizontal transport directions, respectively, generally in accordance with available modeling studies. On the other hand, our experiment shows that low-permeability ground covers can increase shallow soil gas concentrations beneath the pavement by at most 3-4 times, inducing higher subslab concentration than that below open ground surface, even if the latter is obtained at a closer location to vapor source. For cases with uniform soil properties, our study suggests exterior soil gas sample should be taken at a depth below the building foundation by half of the building footprint size, if the vapor source is laterally extensive relative to the building footprint, or by 1 m and 2-3 rn for slab-on-grade and basement scenarios, respectively, if the vapor source is located laterally away from the building.
Assessment Model for Volatilization by Organic Compounds in Vadose Zone Soil

Abstract:The volatilization of VOC from vadose-zone soil into ambient air includes three processes: migration in soil column, molecular diffusion in viscous sub-layer, mixing and transportation in ambient air. With analysis of the migration mechanism of VOC in these three processes, a new mathematical model is developed to calculate the volatilization factor of VOC volatilizing from soil into air under evaporation or infiltration. The effect of evaporation or infiltration on volatilization factor can be analyzed with this model, which could make the health risk assessment more accurately on the volatilization of VOC in vadose zone. With two representative VOCs of 1_2_4- Trichlorobenzene and Tetrachloroethylene, their volatilization factors are calculated in sandy soil and clayey soil respectively. The results show that the evaporation strengthens volatilization but the infiltration weakens volatilization. The effect of evaporation or infiltration on volatilization of 1_2_4- Trichlorobenzene with weak volatility is more obvious than that of Tetrachloroethylene with strong volatility. Volatilization factors of these two representative VOCs in sandy soil are greater than those in clayey soil under the same evaporation (infiltration) conditions. Furthermore, the variation of volatilization factor of VOC in clayey soil induced by evaporation or infiltration is more significant than that in sandy soil.
Three-Dimensional Simulation of Land Drains As a Preferential Pathway for Vapor Intrusion into Buildings

Abstract:Preferential pathways can be significant vapor intrusion (VI) contributors, causing potentially higher inhalation risk to residents of affected buildings than that arising through traditional intrusion pathways. To assess land drains as a preferential pathway, a three-dimensional model, validated using data from a 4-yr field study, was used to study the roles of subfoundation soil permeability on soil gas flow and indoor depressurization. Results indicated that it is almost impossible for an indirect preferential pathway like a land drain ending in subfoundation soils with a permeability <10 m to affect indoor air quality if the land drain connects to a source with the same vapor concentration as that of the groundwater source beneath the building. An equation was developed to estimate the threshold permeability. We also found that even after the preferential pathway was identified using indoor depressurization (also known as controlled pressure method [CPM]) and then turned off, the influence of the preferential pathway and indoor depressurization on indoor concentration might last for months, although it may not be significant (i.e., may not exceed one order of magnitude, in this study). In the absence of such a preferential VI pathway, CPM may actually reduce indoor air concentrations of contaminants below those present under natural indoor pressure conditions, due to the emission rate limit determined by the upward diffusion rate from the vapor source. Our study highlights the role of measuring subfoundation soil permeability to soil gas flow in site investigations and warns practitioners about the possible mischaracterization of indoor air concentration after applying CPM in the absence of a preferential pathway.
Vapor Intrusion Attenuation Factors Relative to Subslab and Source, Reconsidered in Light of Background Data.

Abstract:The basis upon which recommended attenuation factors for vapor intrusion (VI) have been derived are reconsidered. By making a fitting curve to the plot showing the dependence of observed indoor air concentration (c(in)) on subslab concentration (c(ss)) for residences in EPA database, an analytical equation is obtained to identify the relationship among c(in), c(ss) and the averaged background level. The new relationship indicates that subslab measurements may serve as a useful guide only if c(ss) is above 500 mu g/m(3). Otherwise, c(in) is independent of c(ss), with a distribution in good agreements with other studies of background levels. Therefore, employing this screening value (500 mu g/m(3)), new contaminant concentration attenuation factors are proposed for VI, and the values for groundwater-to-indoor and subslab-to-indoor air concentration attenuation factors are 0.004 and 0.02, respectively. The former is applied to examining the reported temporal variations of c(in) obtained during a long-term monitoring study. The results show that using this new groundwater-to-indoor air concentration attenuation factor also provides a reasonably conservative estimate of c(in). (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
