Abstract:Because one of the largest influences on trust in automation is the familiarity with the system, we sought to examine the effects of familiarity on driver interventions while using the autoparking feature of a Tesla Model X. Participants were either told or shown how the autoparking feature worked. Results showed a significantly higher initial driver intervention rate when the participants were only told how to employ the autoparking feature, than when shown. However, the intervention rate quickly leveled off, and differences between conditions disappeared. The number of interventions and the distances from the parking anchoring point (a trashcan) were used to create a new measure of distrust in autonomy. Eyetracking measures revealed that participants disengaged from monitoring the center display as the experiment progressed, which could be a further indication of a lowering of distrust in the system. Combined, these results have important implications for development and design of explainable artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. Finally, we detail the substantial hurdles encountered while trying to evaluate “autonomy in the wild.” Our research highlights the need to re-evaluate trust concepts in high-risk, high-consequence environments.
Group trust dynamics during a risky driving experience in a Tesla Model X

Abstract:The growing concern about the risk and safety of autonomous vehicles (AVs) has made it vital to understand driver trust and behavior when operating AVs. While research has uncovered human factors and design issues based on individual driver performance, there remains a lack of insight into how trust in automation evolves in groups of people who face risk and uncertainty while traveling in AVs. To this end, we conducted a naturalistic experiment with groups of participants who were encouraged to engage in conversation while riding a Tesla Model X on campus roads. Our methodology was uniquely suited to uncover these issues through naturalistic interaction by groups in the face of a risky driving context. Conversations were analyzed, revealing several themes pertaining to trust in automation: (1) collective risk perception, (2) experimenting with automation, (3) group sense-making, (4) human-automation interaction issues, and (5) benefits of automation. Our findings highlight the untested and experimental nature of AVs and confirm serious concerns about the safety and readiness of this technology for on-road use. The process of determining appropriate trust and reliance in AVs will therefore be essential for drivers and passengers to ensure the safe use of this experimental and continuously changing technology. Revealing insights into social group–vehicle interaction, our results speak to the potential dangers and ethical challenges with AVs as well as provide theoretical insights on group trust processes with advanced technology.

Abstract:The use of partially automated driving systems raises concerns about potential responsibility issues, posing risk to the system safety, acceptance, and adoption of these technologies. The concept of meaningful human control has emerged in response to the responsibility gap problem, requiring the fulfillment of two conditions, tracking and tracing. While this concept has provided important philosophical and design insights on automated driving systems, there is currently little knowledge on how meaningful human control relates to subjective experiences of actual users of these systems. To address this gap, our study aimed to investigate the alignment between the degree of meaningful human control and drivers' perceptions of safety and trust in a real-world partially automated driving system. We utilized previously collected data from interviews with Tesla "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) Beta users, investigating the alignment between the user perception and how well the system was tracking the users' reasons. We found that tracking of users' reasons for driving tasks (such as safe maneuvers) correlated with perceived safety and trust, albeit with notable exceptions. Surprisingly, failure to track lane changing and braking reasons was not necessarily associated with negative perceptions of safety. However, the failure of the system to track expected maneuvers in dangerous situations always resulted in low trust and perceived lack of safety. Overall, our analyses highlight alignment points but also possible discrepancies between perceived safety and trust on the one hand, and meaningful human control on the other hand. Our results can help the developers of automated driving technology to design systems under meaningful human control and are perceived as safe and trustworthy.
Perceived safety and trust in SAE Level 2 partially automated cars: Results from an online questionnaire

Abstract:The present online study surveyed drivers of SAE Level 2 partially automated cars on automation use and attitudes towards automation. Respondents reported high levels of trust in their partially automated cars to maintain speed and distance to the car ahead (M = 4.41), and to feel safe most of the time (M = 4.22) on a scale from 1 to 5. Respondents indicated to always know when the car is in partially automated driving mode (M = 4.42), and to monitor the performance of their car most of the time (M = 4.34). A low rating was obtained for engaging in other activities while driving the partially automated car (M = 2.27). Partial automation did, however, increase reported engagement in secondary tasks that are already performed during manual driving (i.e., the proportion of respondents reporting to observe the landscape, use the phone for texting, navigation, music selection and calls, and eat during partially automated driving was higher in comparison to manual driving). Unsafe behaviour was rare with 1% of respondents indicating to rarely monitor the road, and another 1% to sleep during partially automated driving. Structural equation modeling revealed a strong, positive relationship between perceived safety and trust (β = 0.69, p = 0.001). Performance expectancy had the strongest effects on automation use, followed by driver engagement, trust, and non-driving related task engagement. Perceived safety interacted with automation use through trust. We recommend future research to evaluate the development of perceived safety and trust in time, and revisit the influence of driver engagement and non-driving related task engagement, which emerged as new constructs related to trust in partial automation.

Abstract:A better understanding of automation disengagements can impact the safety and efficiency of automated systems. This study investigates the factors contributing to driver- and system-initiated disengagements by analyzing semi-structured interviews with 103 users of Tesla's Autopilot and FSD Beta. Through an examination of the data, main categories and sub-categories of disengagements were identified, which led to the development of a triadic model of automation disengagements. The model treats automation and human operators as equivalent agents. It suggests that human operators disengage automation when they anticipate failure, observe unnatural or unwanted automation behavior (e.g., erratic steering, running red lights), or believe the automation is not suited for certain environments (e.g., inclement weather, non-standard roads). Human operators' negative experiences, such as frustration, feelings of unsafety, and distrust, are also incorporated into the model, as these emotions can be triggered by (anticipated) automation behaviors. The automation, in turn, monitors human operators and may disengage itself if it detects insufficient vigilance or traffic rule violations. Moreover, human operators can be influenced by the reactions of passengers and other road users, leading them to disengage automation if they sense discomfort, anger, or embarrassment due to the system's actions. This research offers insights into the factors contributing to automation disengagements, highlighting not only the concerns of human operators but also the social aspects of the phenomenon. Furthermore, the findings provide information on potential edge cases of automated vehicle technology, which may help to enhance the safety and efficiency of such systems.

Abstract:Level 2 automated vehicles (AVs) have been commercially available for years, yet the extent to which drivers are cognizant of their capabilities and limitations remains largely unknown. This study aimed to assess the public's mental model of Level 2 AVs and investigate the relationships between mental model, trust, and reliance. Moreover, it sought to explore driver heterogeneity through cluster analysis to identify typical driver classes. Employing Tesla Autopilot as a representative Level 2 automation system, we designed a questionnaire measuring mental model from three dimensions: functional condition, sensorimotor preparation, and automation monitoring. This questionnaire was administered to both Tesla Autopilot owners ( N = 357) and non-owners ( N = 357). The results showed that, on average, drivers possessed an inadequate mental model regarding Level 2 AVs, and those with a relatively better mental model exhibited lower levels of trust and reliance. Owning a Level 2 AV did not result in a better understanding of the system, but it led to a higher trust level. Moreover, the results suggested that drivers' trust and reliance in AVs tended to increase within the initial 6 months of usage and then kept stabilized after that. Through cluster analysis, we identified three distinct driver classes that exhibited significant differences in their mental model levels and attitudes towards AVs: Class 1 (blurred positive), Class 2 (sober neutral), and Class 3 (cautiously positive). This further validates the presence of heterogeneity among drivers. The insights gained from this study can serve as a valuable resource for supporting and guiding the development and implementation of training programs aimed at enhancing drivers' comprehension of Level 2 AVs.

Abstract:Maintaining an appropriate level of trust is critical for driving safety in autonomous vehicles. While enhancing the driver's situation awareness (SA) of system information in autonomous driving is known to significantly promote trust calibration, it remains unclear whether enhancing the driver's SA of the external context during driving contributes to this calibration. This study addresses this gap by improving SA of the external context during Level 3 (L3) driving automation across various driving environments. Driving contexts were manipulated using distinct road conditions containing low, medium, or high contextual risks. To enhance driver's SA of the driving context, we redesigned the in-vehicle central control panel to display real-time perceptual and predictive information about the external driving context. We hypothesized that SA of driving contexts would facilitate trust calibration rather than merely enhancing trust, allowing trust to adjust to appropriate levels under different driving conditions. Experiment 1 examined the impact of perceptual information about the road, traffic infrastructure, and surrounding vehicles on drivers' trust. We found that driver's trust decreased with increased contextual risk only when the reconfigured panel was used, while the number of accidents was not affected. Experiment 2 investigated the effect of predictive information about the external context on drivers' trust by marking safe and dangerous zones around driver's vehicle with green and red areas, respectively. We revealed that the predictive information calibrated the trust according to road conditions and increased overall trust levels, while the number of accidents was not affected. Together, these findings suggest that enhancing perception and prediction of external contexts helps drivers align their trust with contextual risk levels in L3 driving automation without compromising driving safety.

Abstract:As technological advancements and lowered costs make self-driving cars available to more people, it becomes important to understand the dynamics of human-automation interactions for safety and efficacy. We used a dynamical approach to examine data from a previous study on simulated driving with an automated driving assistant. To maximize effect size in this preliminary study, we focused the current analysis on the two lowest and two highest-performing participants. Our visual comparisons were the utilization of the automated system and the impact of perturbations. Low-performing participants toggled and maintained reliance either on automation or themselves for longer periods of time. Decision making of high-performing participants was using the automation briefly and consistently throughout the driving task. Participants who displayed an early understanding of automation capabilities opted for tactical use. Further exploration of individual differences and automation usage styles will help to understand the optimal human-automation-team dynamic and increase safety and efficacy.

Abstract:Human Factors, Ahead of Print. ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the impact of automated vehicle (AV) interaction mode on drivers' trust and preferred driving styles in response to pedestrian- and traffic-related road events.BackgroundThe rising popularity of AVs highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the factors that influence trust in AV. Trust is a crucial element, particularly because current AVs are only partially automated and may require manual takeover; miscalibrated trust could have an adverse effect on safe driver-vehicle interaction. However, before attempting to calibrate trust, it is vital to comprehend the factors that contribute to trust in automation.MethodsThirty-six individuals participated in the experiment. Driving scenarios incorporated adaptive SAE Level 2 AV algorithms, driven by participants' event-based trust in AVs and preferences for AV driving styles. The study measured participants' trust, preferences, and the number of takeover behaviors.ResultsHigher levels of trust and preference for more aggressive AV driving styles were found in response to pedestrian-related events compared to traffic-related events. Furthermore, drivers preferred the trust-based adaptive mode and had fewer takeover behaviors than the preference-based adaptive and fixed modes. Lastly, participants with higher trust in AVs favored more aggressive driving styles and made fewer takeover attempts.ConclusionAdaptive AV interaction modes that depend on real-time event-based trust and event types may represent a promising approach to human-automation interaction in vehicles.ApplicationFindings from this study can support future driver- and situation-aware AVs that can adapt their behavior for improved driver-vehicle interaction.
The More You Know: Trust Dynamics and Calibration in Highly Automated Driving and the Effects of Take-Overs, System Malfunction, and System Transparency

Abstract:Objective: This paper presents a theoretical model and two simulator studies on the psychological processes during early trust calibration in automated vehicles. Background: The positive outcomes of automation can only reach their full potential if a calibrated level of trust is achieved. In this process, information on system capabilities and limitations plays a crucial role. Method: In two simulator experiments, trust was repeatedly measured during an automated drive. In Study 1, all participants in a two-group experiment experienced a system-initiated take-over, and the occurrence of a system malfunction was manipulated. In Study 2 in a 2 × 2 between-subject design, system transparency was manipulated as an additional factor. Results: Trust was found to increase during the first interactions progressively. In Study 1, take-overs led to a temporary decrease in trust, as did malfunctions in both studies. Interestingly, trust was reestablished in the course of interaction for take-overs and malfunctions. In Study 2, the high transparency condition did not show a temporary decline in trust after a malfunction. Conclusion: Trust is calibrated along provided information prior to and during the initial drive with an automated vehicle. The experience of take-overs and malfunctions leads to a temporary decline in trust that was recovered in the course of error-free interaction. The temporary decrease can be prevented by providing transparent information prior to system interaction. Application: Transparency, also about potential limitations of the system, plays an important role in this process and should be considered in the design of tutorials and human-machine interaction (HMI) concepts of automated vehicles.

Abstract:With the growing technological advances in autonomous driving, the transport industry and research community seek to determine the impact that autonomous vehicles (AV) will have on consumers, as well as identify the different factors that will influence their use. Most of the research performed so far relies on laboratory-controlled conditions using driving simulators, as they offer a safe environment for testing advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). In this study we analyze the behavior of drivers that are placed in control of an automated vehicle in a real life driving environment. The vehicle is equipped with advanced autonomy, making driver control of the vehicle unnecessary in many scenarios, although a driver take over is possible and sometimes required. In doing so, we aim to determine the impact of such a system on the driver and their driving performance. To this end road users' behavior from naturalistic driving data is analyzed focusing on awareness and diagnosis of the road situation. Results showed that the road features determined the level of visual attention and trust in the automation. They also showed that the activities performed during the automation affected the reaction time to take over the control of the vehicle.

Exploring Trust in Self-Driving Vehicles Through Text Analysis

Abstract:Objective This study examined attitudes toward self-driving vehicles and the factors motivating those attitudes. Background Self-driving vehicles represent potentially transformative technology, but achieving this potential depends on consumers’ attitudes. Ratings from surveys estimate these attitudes, and open-ended comments provide an opportunity to understand their basis. Method A nationally representative sample of 7,947 drivers in 2016 and 8,517 drivers in 2017 completed the J.D. Power U.S. Tech Choice Study SM , which included a rating for level of trust with self-driving vehicles and associated open-ended comments. These open-ended comments are qualitative data that can be analyzed quantitatively using structural topic modeling. Structural topic modeling identifies common themes, extracts prototypical comments for each theme, and assesses how the survey year and rating affect the prevalence of these themes. Results Structural topic modeling identified 13 topics, such as “Tested for a long time,” which was strongly associated with positive ratings, and “Hacking & glitches,” which was strongly associated with negative ratings. The topics of “Self-driving accidents” and “Trust when mature” were more prominent in 2017 compared with 2016. Conclusion Structural topic modeling reveals reasons underlying consumer attitudes toward vehicle automation. These reasons align with elements typically associated with trust in automation, as well as elements that mediate perceived risk, such as the desire for control as well as societal, relational, and experiential bases of trust. Application The analysis informs the debate concerning how safe is safe enough for automated vehicles and provides initial indicators of what makes such vehicles feel safe and trusted.
Impacts of Automated Valet Parking Systems on Driver Workload and Trust

Abstract:In the realm of automated driving, automated valet parking (AVP) systems represent a significant leap towards enhancing urban mobility and safety. While existing research has explored various aspects of AVP systems, there is a notable gap in the literature specifically addressing AVP systems in relation to their impact on driver workload and trust. This study evaluates a Level 2 AVP system implemented in a vehicle, focusing on its impact on driver workload and trust. We utilized eye-tracking, physiological monitoring, and self-reported surveys to capture driver responses during AVP operation compared to manual parking. Results indicated a trend towards reduced workload during AVP use, as suggested by eye-tracking data, and a decrease in physiological markers of stress, although these differences were not statistically significant. Driver trust in the AVP system significantly increased after hands-on experience. However, an increase in mobile device usage signaled potential issues of overreliance on automation. The findings underscore the importance of integrating human factors into AVP system design to balance workload reduction with the prevention of overreliance, ultimately enhancing driver engagement and calibrating trust.

Abstract:Partially automated vehicles (PAVs) have been used in real-world environments for several years since the emergence of autonomous driving. It is important to understand the effects of partial automation systems (PAS) on the understanding of drivers and their behaviour during the first months of use. In order to adapt to new vehicle technology, drivers usually exhibit specific behaviours in this stage that are not intended by the developers, namely behavioural adaptation. The present study investigated the behavioural adaptations by early PAV adopters after short-term usage. A semi-structured interview was conducted among 20  Tesla drivers who had relatively high experience (one to five months) with Autopilot, and the interviews were synthesized to understand their behavioural adaptation, mental models, and trust during the period of use. The results showed that PAV drivers had a very positive attitude towards the PAS and drivers universally engaged in secondary tasks during automated driving. They also learned from their experiences to identify relatively safe usage conditions and they employed a safety margin to avoid exposure to excessively risky situations.

Abstract:According to industry research, the automation of vehicles promises a revolution in traffic safety, mobility, and quality of life. However, the success of such vehicles depends on their acceptance. This study investigates the influence of trust in technology, concerns of giving up control, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, the personality factor innovativeness, and the enjoyment of driving a car on the a priori intention to adopt an autonomous vehicle. By means of an online survey with 369 German participants, our study shows that trust in the technology and the concern about handing over control to a machine go hand in hand as respondents’ cognitive and affective perception of this innovation. Moreover, perceived usefulness represents an influential factor, while the enjoyment of driving a car is a barrier to the technology’s acceptance. Innovators represent a promising target for campaigns, as they are more likely to adopt an autonomous vehicle.

A Case Study of Trust on Autonomous Driving

Abstract:As autonomous vehicles have benefited the society, understanding the dynamic change of humans' trust during human-autonomous vehicle interaction can help to improve the safety and performance of autonomous driving. We designed and conducted a human subjects study involving 19 participants. Each participant was asked to enter their trust level in a Likert scale in real-time during experiments on a driving simulator. We also collected physiological data (e.g., heart rate, pupil size) of participants as complementary indicators of trust. We used analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Signal Temporal Logic (STL) to analyze the experimental data. Our results show the influence of different factors (e.g., automation alarms, weather conditions) on trust, and the individual variability in human reaction time and trust change.

Self-Parking Cars – “Killer Application” for Autonomous Driving?

Abstract:Current surveys on the acceptance of automated driving reveal that (potential) users are still quite hesitant towards the new technology. One reason for this reluctance can be found in the lack of obvious usefulness of autonomous driving. Promises that are linked to autonomous driving are often not strong enough or not relevant enough for the everyday user of a car:  - Several benefits occur only on the aggregate level of traffic, like for instance smoother traffic flows.  - Some individual benefits are of interest only for smaller groups of people, so for example working while driving.  - Other individual benefits, like having time to watch a movie or to play a game, do not make sense due to the short duration of trips made in an everyday context. Against this background the question arises which perceived advantages of the (fully) automated car would (i) support its introduction into the mobility market, and (ii) influence future mobility behavior. A scan through existing surveys shows that automated parking is an application that seems to be interesting to car users from their today’s perspective. This also applies to our survey among car users in Germany. There we found that parking was the car function that got the highest number of positive answers when we asked people about the functions they would like to delegate to the automated car. Automated parking was seen as particularly helpful for trips in the city and with shopping and luggage haulage. This observation was supported by correlations we identified for the importance of freedom from stress with the willingness to hand over parking to an autonomous system. While automated parking can become the "killer application" for autonomous driving, it might also have an impact on mode choice that gives rise to an increase in car use. When asked for what kind of trips they would find autonomous vehicles particularly useful, respondents rated automated parking as most beneficial specifically in an urban context, when going shopping or having luggage with them. With our contribution we want to explore in depth - demographics and attitudes of people being interested in using automated parking function - correlations of willingness to use automated parking with “emotions” about the car and driving - potential consequences of the use of automated parking on mode choice.

Abstract:Autonomous and semiautonomous vehicles are currently being developed by over14 companies. These vehicles may improve driving safety and convenience, or they may create new challenges for drivers, particularly with regard to situation awareness (SA) and autonomy interaction. I conducted a naturalistic driving study on the autonomy features in the Tesla Model S, recording my experiences over a 6-month period, including assessments of SA and problems with the autonomy. This preliminary analysis provides insights into the challenges that drivers may face in dealing with new autonomous automobiles in realistic driving conditions, and it extends previous research on human-autonomy interaction to the driving domain. Issues were found with driver training, mental model development, mode confusion, unexpected mode interactions, SA, and susceptibility to distraction. New insights into challenges with semiautonomous driving systems include increased variability in SA, the replacement of continuous control with serial discrete control, and the need for more complex decisions. Issues that deserve consideration in future research and a set of guidelines for driver interfaces of autonomous systems are presented and used to create recommendations for improving driver SA when interacting with autonomous vehicles.

Abstract:Trust is crucial for ensuring the safety, security, and widespread adoption of automated vehicles (AVs), and if trust is lacking, drivers and the public may not be willing to use them. This research seeks to investigate trust profiles in order to create personalized experiences for drivers in AVs. This technique helps in better understanding drivers' dynamic trust from a persona's perspective. The study was conducted in a driving simulator where participants were requested to take over control from automated driving in three conditions that included a control condition, a false alarm condition, and a miss condition with eight takeover requests (TORs) in different scenarios. Drivers' dispositional trust, initial learned trust, dynamic trust, personality, and emotions were measured. We identified three trust profiles (i.e., believers, oscillators, and disbelievers) using a K-means clustering model. In order to validate this model, we built a multinomial logistic regression model based on SHAP explainer that selected the most important features to predict the trust profiles with an F1-score of 0.90 and accuracy of 0.89. We also discussed how different individual factors influenced trust profiles which helped us understand trust dynamics better from a persona's perspective. Our findings have important implications for designing a personalized in-vehicle trust monitoring and calibrating system to adjust drivers' trust levels in order to improve safety and experience in automated driving.
Intelligent Mobility in the City: The Influence of System and Context Factors on Drivers’ Takeover Willingness and Trust in Automated Vehicles

Abstract:Automated driving in urban environments not only has the potential to improve traffic flow and heighten driver comfort but also to increase traffic safety, particularly for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians. For these benefits to take effect, drivers need to trust and use automated vehicles. This decision is influenced by both system and context factors. However, it is not yet clear how these factors interact with each other, especially for automated driving in city scenarios with crossing pedestrians. Therefore, we conducted an online experiment in which participants ( N = 68) experienced short automated rides from the driver’s perspective through an urban environment. In each of the presented videos, a pedestrian crossed the street in front of the automated vehicle while system and context factors were varied: 1) the crossing pedestrian’s intention was either visualized correctly (as crossing) or incorrectly (visualization missing) by the automated vehicle (system factor), 2) the pedestrian was either distracted by using a smartphone while crossing or not (context factor), and 3) the scenario was either more or less complex depending on the number of other vehicles and pedestrians being present (context factor). In situations with a system malfunction where the crossing pedestrian’s intention was not visualized, participants perceived the situation as more critical, had less trust in the automated system, and a higher willingness to take over control regardless of any context factors. However, when the system worked correctly, the crossing pedestrian’s smartphone usage came into play, especially in the less complex scenario. Participants perceived situations with a distracted pedestrian as more critical, trusted the system less, indicated a higher willingness to take over control, and were more uncertain about their decision. As this study demonstrates the influence of distracted pedestrians, more research is needed on context factors and their inclusion in the design of interfaces to keep drivers informed during automated driving in urban environments.
