Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers bearing non-covalent configurationally locked backbones have a high potential to be good photovoltaic materials. Since 1,4-dithienyl-2,5-dialkoxybenzene (TBT) is a typical moiety possessing intramolecular S...O interactions and thus a restricted planar configuration, it was used in this work as an electron-donating unit to combine with the following electron-accepting units: 3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TFT), thieno-[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD), and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) for the construction of such D-A conjugated polymers. Therefore, the so-designed three polymers, PTBTTFT, PTBTTPD, and PTBTDPP, were synthesized and investigated on their basic optoelectronic properties in detail. Moreover, using [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as acceptor material, polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated for studying photovoltaic performances of these polymers. It was found that the optimized PTBTTPD cell gave the best performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.49%, while that of PTBTTFT displayed the poorest one (PCE=1.96%). The good photovoltaic behaviors of PTBTTPD come from its lowest-lying energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) among the three polymers, and good hole mobility and favorable morphology for its PC71BM-blended film. Although PTBTDPP displayed the widest absorption spectrum, the largest hole mobility, and regular chain packing structure when blended with PC71BM, its unmatched HOMO energy level and disfavored blend film morphology finally limited its solar cell performance to a moderate level (PCE: 3.91%). Abstract:We describe herein the synthesis of novel donor-acceptor conjugated polymers with dithienobenzodithiophenes (DTBDT) as the electron donor and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole as the electron acceptor for high-performance organic photovoltaics (OPVs). We studied the effects of strategically inserting thiophene into the DTBDT as a substituent on the skeletal structure on the opto-electronic performances of fabricated devices. From UV/Vis absorption, electrochemical, and field-effect transistor analyses, we found that the thiophene-containing DTBDT derivative can substantially increase the orbital overlap area between adjacent conjugated chains and thus dramatically enhance charge-carrier mobility up to 0.55 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). The outstanding charge-transport characteristics of this polymer allowed the realization of high-performance organic solar cells with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.1 %. Detailed studies on the morphological factors that enable the maximum PCE of the polymer solar cells are discussed along with a hole/electron mobility analysis based on the space-charge-limited current model.

Abstract:Molecular design of either polymer donors or acceptors is a promising strategy to tune the morphology of the active layer of organic solar cells, enabling a high-performance device. Thereinto, developing novel polymer donors is an alternative method to obtain high photovoltaic performance. Herein, we present a facile side-chain engineering on the dithiophenobenzotriazole (DTBTz) unit of newly-designed polymer donors (named pBDT-DTBTz-EH and pBDT-DTBTz-Me) to boost the performance of non-fullerene solar cells. Compared with pBDT-DTBTz-EH with long N-alkyl side chains, pBDT-DTBTz-Me with a short methyl exhibits stronger molecular aggregation, higher absorption coefficient, and preferred face-on orientation packing. As a consequence, pBDT-DTBTz-Me based devices achieve an optimal power conversion efficiency of 15.31% when donors are paired with the narrow bandgap acceptor Y6, which is superior to that of pBDT-DTBTz-EH based devices (9.17%). Additionally, the pBDT-DTBTz-Me based devices manifest more effective charge separation and transfer than pBDT-DTBTz-EH based devices. These results indicate that fine-tuning side chains of polymer donors provide new insights for the design of high-performance polymer donors in non-fullerene solar cells.

Abstract:Abstract Dithieno[2,3-d;2′,3′-d′]benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b′]dithiophenes (DTBDT) is a kind of prospective candidate for constructing donor- π -acceptor (D- π -A) copolymer donors applied in organic solar cells but is restricted due to its relatively poor photovoltaic performance compared with benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b′]dithiophenes (BDT)-based analog. Herein, three conjugated polymers ( PE51 , PE52 and PE53 )-based DTBDT and benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole (BTA) bearing different lengths of alkyl side chain were designed and synthesized. The change in alkyl chain length can obviously affect the energy level distribution, molecular stacking, miscibility and morphology with the non-fullerene acceptor of Y6 . Polymer PE52 with a moderate alkyl chain realized the highest short-current density ( J SC ) and fill factor (FF) of 25.36 mA cm −2 and 71.94%, respectively. Compared with BDT-based analog J52-Cl , the significantly enhanced crystallinity and intermolecular interaction of PE52 had effectively boosted the charge transport characteristic and optimized the surface morphology, thereby increasing the power conversion efficiency from 12.3% to an impressive 14.6%, which is the highest value among DTBDT-based and BTA-based polymers. Our results show that not only could high efficiency be achieved via using DTBDT as a D unit, but the length of the alkyl chain on BTA has a significant impact on the photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Three new donor–acceptor (D–A) copolymers based on benzodithiophene (BDT) with alkylthiolated aromatic rings furan, thiophene, and benzene and 5,6-difluoro-4,7-bis(4-(2-octyldodecyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT) units, namely PBDTFS-DTBT, PBDTTS-DTBT, and PBDTPS-DTBT, respectively, were synthesized and applied in solution-processed fullerene type organic solar cells (OSCs). The target polymers were systematically investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) absorption spectra, cyclic voltammetry (CV), density functional theory (DFT) and photovoltaic measurements. The experimental results imply that the electron push-pull effect and torsion angles between the conjugated side hetero-aromatic rings and BDT core play a key role in tuning the optical absorption bands, molecular energy levels, hole mobilities, and morphology of the corresponding polymers. The OSCs based on PBDTTS-DTBT and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) show the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.80% among the three polymeric analogues, with an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.92 V, a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 11.95 mA cm−2 and fill factor (FF) of 70.76%. Hence, the results in this work indicate that the photovoltaic properties of the BDT-BT-based polymers can be effectively modulated by introducing conjugated alkylthiolated hetero-aromatic rings with the varied electron donating ability and steric hindrance.

Abstract:Herein, a series of random donor copolymers were reported, by incorporating different content of electron-rich 4,8-bis(9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-9H-fluoren-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDTF) units into PBDB-T polymer to fine-tune the highest occupied molecular orbital(HOMO)energy level. As we excepted, downshifted HOMO of corresponding copolymers was observed with increased the ratios of BDTF unit on PBDB-T polymer, causing by the synergy of weak electron-donating ability of the fluorene side chains and the enhanced dihedral angles. Notably, compared with PBDB-T, the HOMO energy level of P91 containing 10% BDTF was shifted down by 0.07 eV. Among them, the devices based on P55:ITIC reached a high open circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.00 V with incorporation of 50% of BDTF units. The result indicated that the BDTF unit, as an excellent building unit in donor materials, could play a crucial role to realized high-VOC polymer solar cells.

Abstract:A new conjugated copolymer PBDTTT-TIPS containing thiazolothiazole acceptor unit and triisopropylsilylethynyl (TIPS)-functionalized benzodithiophene donor unit was synthesized by Pd-catalyzed Stifle coupling and compared with its alkoxy-substituted analogue PBDTTT-C12. PBDTTT-TIPS exhibits decomposition temperature of 377 C, absorption maximum of 598 cm, HOMO level of -5.3 eV, and hole mobility as high as 1.2 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Without any post-treatments, polymer solar cells based on the blend of PBDTTT-TIPS and PC71BM exhibited power conversion efficiency as high as 4.33%, which is 2 times that for device based on the PBDTTT-C12:PC71BM blend. TIPS and C12 side chains exhibit a little impact on absorption, HOMO level, and hole mobility of the polymers, but they significantly influence blend film morphology and photovoltaic performance. TIPS side chains induces excellent compatibility between PBDTTT-TIPS and PC71BM, and the PBDTTT-TIPS:PC71BM blend exhibits perfect phase separation scales around 10-20 nm, which is beneficial to charge separation and enhanced efficiency of the device, while C12 side chains leads to large phase separation, which is responsible for the lower efficiency.
Influence of Difluoro Regio-Substitution Variations of Donor Polymers on the Non-Fullerene Solar Cell Performance

Abstract:This study presents the synthesis of three donor-pi-acceptor-type donor polymers, namely, PcBTT12ffB, PcBTT13ffB, and PcBTT14ffB, for use in polymer solar cells (PSCs). These polymers feature a backbone incorporating a benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b ']dithiophene-based unit as the donor moiety, a thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based unit as the pi-bridge, and three different difluoro-substituted benzene units as the acceptor moieties. They demonstrate relatively wide optical band gaps of approximately 2.1 eV, which exhibit complementary absorption profiles with the Y6 acceptor. PSCs were fabricated and studied using the active layer of a polymer/Y6 blend. Among the three PSCs, the PcBTT14ffB device exhibited the best performance, with a J(sc) of 23.34 mA/cm(2), a V-oc of 0.866 V, an FF of 0.703, and a PCE of 14.15%. Morphology and device physics studies revealed that PcBTT14ffB achieved better crystallinity, mobility, and phase-separation scale compared with the other two substitution analogues in blend films. Additionally, the PcBTT14ffB device showed a relatively small E-loss of 0.544 eV due to the low radiative recombination energy loss. This work not only highlights the synthesis of wide-gap donor polymers using difluorobenzene units but also provides a systematic study of how fluorine regio-substitution variations in conjugated polymers influence the charge transport and PSC performance.

Abstract:Conjugated copolymers for OPV. Polymeric semiconductors offer the dual advantages of lightness and flexibility, facilitating the large‐scale production of organic electronic devices. In the present research, electron donor polymers were synthesized incorporating high electron density aromatic units, specifically benzodithiophene (BDT) and thiophene (Th), to explore their efficacy in organic electronics. This systematic study focused on evaluating the impact of varying side chains on the material properties of these polymers. It was found that polymers with Th side chains exhibited significantly enhanced thermal stability, approximately 100°C higher than their alkoxide side chain counterparts. For the polymer PEHO‐BDT3HT, a bandgap value of around 1.6 eV was obtained. Furthermore, binary devices were developed using these novel copolymers, among which PDT‐BDT3HT demonstrated superior photovoltaic performance, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 1.56% without any optimization. This work not only sheds light on the influence of side chain variations in polymer properties but also showcases the potential of BDT and Th‐based copolymers in the field of organic electronics.

Abstract:A donor copolymer Poly{2,6-4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b′]dithiophene-5,8-2,3-bis(5-octylthiophen-2-yl)quinoxaline} (PBDTThQx) with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene and quinoxaline derivatives was synthesized and characterized with NMR, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and cyclic voltammetry. Photovoltaic devices with the configuration indium tin oxide–poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–poly(styrene sulfonate)–PBDTThQx–[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM)–LiF–Al were fabricated, in which PBDTThQx performed as the electron donor and PC61BM was the electron acceptor in the active layer. The device presented reasonable photovoltaic properties when the weight ratio of PBDTThQx:PC61BM reached 1:3. The open-circuit voltage, fill factor, and power conversion efficiency were gauged to be 0.75 V, 0.59, and 0.74%, respectively. Shorter alkyl chain in thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD)-based large bandgap polymer donors – Yield efficient non-fullerene polymer solar cells

Abstract:Typically, conjugated polymers are composed of conjugated backbones and alkyl side chains. In this contribution, a cost-effective strategy of tailoring the length of alkyl side chain is utilized to design high-performing thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD)-based large bandgap polymer donors PBDT-BiTPD(Cχ) (χ = 48, 52, 56), in which χ represents the alkyl side chain length in term of the total carbon number. A combination of light absorption, device, and morphology examinations make clear that the shorter alkyl side chains yield (i) higher crystallinity and more predominant face-on crystallite orientation in their neat and BHJ blend films, (ii) higher charge mobilities (6.7×10-4 cm2 V−1 s−1 for C48 vs. 3.2×10-4 cm2 V−1 s−1 for C56), and negligible charge recombination, consequently, (iii) significantly improved fill-factor (FF) and short current (JSC), while almost the same open circuit voltage (VOC) of ca. 0.82 V in their corresponding BHJ devices. In parallel, as alkyl side chain lengths decrease from C56 to C48, power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) increased from 7.7% for C56 to 11.1% for C52, and further to 14.1% for C48 in their BHJ solar cells made with a narrow bandgap non-fullerene acceptor Y6. This systematic study declares that shortening the side chain, if providing appropriate solubility in device solution processing solvents, is of essential significance for developing high-performing polymer donors and further improving device photovoltaic performance.

Enhancing the Photovoltaic Performance of a Benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazole-Based Polymer Donor via a Non-Fullerene Acceptor Pairing Strategy

Abstract:As a well-known electron-withdrawing group, benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BT) has been intensively studied and adopted to construct polymer donors with tunable band gaps. However, polymer solar cells (PSCs) with BT-based polymer donors, limited by the weak absorption and inflexible energy level of fullerene derivatives, usually suffer mediocre power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Here, through subtly tailoring a BT unit with asymmetric fluoro and alkyloxy groups and judiciously pairing a BT-based polymer donor with three narrow band gap non-fullerene acceptors (e.g., IEICO-4F, ITOIC-2F, and IDTCN-O), active layers with complementary absorption spectra, small lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) offsets, and preferred morphologies have been achieved. Consequently, PSCs with excellent Jsc values (over 20 mA/cm2) and high PCEs up to 12.33% have been obtained. To the best of our knowledge, the value of 12.33% is among the highest PCEs for BT-based polymers in binary PSCs so far. Abstract:Two D-A conjugated polymers (named PBDTC6BT and PBDTC10DBT) with benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b']thiophene (BDT) as donor and 4,7-dithiophen-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DBT) as acceptor, were designed and synthesized. PBDTC6DBT and PBDTC10DBT have hexyl and decyl as side chains in the DBT units, respectively. The polymers were characterized by spectroscopic (NMR and UV-vis) methods, GPC, DSC and cyclic voltammetry. In order to study the photovoltaic properties of the two conjugated polymers, photovoltaic devices with the configuration of ITO/poly(3,4-ehylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/polymer:[6,6]-phenyl C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM)/LiF/Al, were fabricated, in which PBDTC6DBT or PBDTC10DBT acted as electron donor in active layers. According to the experimental data, when the blend ratio of PBDTC6DBT and PC61 BM reached 1:2, the best photovoltaic properties among the PBDTC6DBT-based devices were obtained, and the open-circuit voltage, the short-circuit current density and the power conversion efficiency were measured to be 0.63 V, 6.18 mA/cm(2) and 1.86%, respectively. As to PBDTC10DBT-based devices, the maximum of power conversion efficiency reached 0.99% with the blend ratio of PBDTC10DBT and PC61BM being 1:2. Abstract:The working horses for the drastically improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) were the small-band-gap molecular non-fullerene acceptors. This development not only removed the low performance obstacle for OSCs but also raised needs for wide-band-gap polymers for donor/acceptor mix with complimentary absorptions. Benzodithiophene (BDT) is one of the mostly used unit for constructing donor polymers. Here, we introduced one type of donor polymer with two BDT units placed perpendicularly. This exploration is aimed to reduce the complexity of molecule design, potentially to reduce the cost of donor materials. We also explored the halogenation of BDT side group to optimize the performances of the copolymers. The chlorinated donor polymer PvBDT-Cl delivered a decent PCE of 8.23% with Y6-T. This work explored the possibility of using only BDT unit to construct high performance donor polymers, which is a crucial insight for future low-cost donor polymer design.

Abstract:In this study, two D–A polymers consisting of benzodithiophene-4,8-dione and tetrathiophene with or without fluorination were synthesized to reveal the photovoltaic properties of fluorination effect on the polymer backbone. Polymer PDFTB with two fluorine atoms substituted on the backbone exhibits an enhanced π–π stacking effect, deeper HOMO energy level and better backbone planarity than PDTB without fluorine atom substitution. Devices based on PDFTB:ITIC show a power conversion efficiency of 4.39%, which is 15% higher than that of PDTB-based devices due to the higher hole mobility, optimized surface morphology and homogeneous phase separation of the active layer. These results suggest that the fluorination strategy is a facile way to design polymeric donors for solvent-processed polymer solar cells.

Impact of an electron withdrawing group on the thiophene-fused benzotriazole unit on the photovoltaic performance of the derived polymer solar cells

Abstract:In this work, two new donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers (P32 and P33) for non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs) have been synthesized based on a thiophene-fused benzotriazole (BTAZT) unit and thiophene substituted benzodithiophene (BDTT) unit, in which two different electron-withdrawing groups (i.e., fluorine and ester groups) have been introduced at the side of BTAZT unit, respectively. It is found that P32 with a long alkyl chain ester group shows a more redshifted intramolecular charge transfer absorption, and also exhibits a better complementary absorption spectrum with a small molecular acceptor based on the dithienocyclopentathieno[3,2-b]thiophene core end-capped with 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone unit (IHIC) than P33. Moreover, P32:IHIC blended film shows higher and more balanced hole/electron charge mobilities as well as better morphologies with more suitable phase separation scale for efficient charge separation and transport than P33:IHIC blended film. Thus, the P32:IHIC based PSC device exhibits the higher power conversion efficiency of 8.35% with higher short-circuit current density (J SC = 16.77 mA cm−2) and fill factor (FF = 64.89%) compared with the P32:IHIC based PSC device, indicating that the different electron-withdrawing side groups at BTAZT unit exerts a significant influence on the properties of the polymers as well as the photovoltaic performances of the PSCs.

Abstract:All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) show great promise for use as portable and wearable electronic power sources. It is well recognized that a gradient distribution of the two components of the active layer of all-PSCs is preferred to facilitate charge transport and suppress non-radiative recombination loss. Herein, two polymers of PBS-DIT and PTPH-DIT were designed and synthesized by changing the linking mode of a benzothiophene side chain located on a benzodithiophene (BDT) skeleton, and the influences of isomerization on the blend morphology and device performance were investigated. PBS-DIT with the BDT moiety linked to the benzene ring of benzothiophene exhibited stronger solution aggregation, better tolerance to heat processing, and finer compatibility with the acceptor of N2200. Besides, PBS-DIT induced its desirable vertical phase distribution while PTPHT-DIT was uniformly distributed over the vertical direction. Benefiting from more efficient charge transfer, higher and balanced charge transport, and less recombination loss, the all-PSCs with PBS-DIT afforded a PCE of 7.76% which is much higher than 5.31% for the blend of PTPH-DIT:N2200. The results indicate that the building block of BDT linked to the benzene ring of the benzothiophene substituent is more promising than its counterpart of BDT linked to the thiophene ring of the benzothiophene substituent. Furthermore, isomerization can be a simple yet effective method to modulate the intermolecular miscibility and vertical phase distribution.

Gradual Fluorination on the Phenyl Side Chains for Benzodithiophene-Based Linear Polymers to Improve the Photovoltaic Performance

Abstract:To study the impact of introducing fluorine atoms onto the conjugated phenyl side chains of benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT)-based copolymers, three novel donor−π–acceptor (D−π–A) alternative polymers PE40, PE42, and PE44 were designed and synthesized. The phenyl-substituted-BDT, thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, and benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole (BTA) served as the donor, π-bridge, and acceptor units, respectively, to enable linear polymer backbones. When introducing two or four fluorine atoms into the phenyl side units of PE40, the polymers PE42 and PE44 demonstrate a gradual decrease of energy levels and an increase of crystallinity in the pristine and blend films. It was noted that the increase in fluorine atoms gradually improved the performance parameters of polymer solar cells (PSCs) with Y6 as the acceptor. The PE40:Y6 device yielded a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 7.07% with a short-circuit (JSC) of 21.36 mA cm–2, an open-circuVOC) of 0.65 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.51, and PE42:Y6 exhibited a better PCE of 10.11% (JSC = 23.25 mA cm–2, VOC = 0.74 V, and FF = 0.59), while PE44:Y6 exhibited the best PCE of 13.62% (JSC = 25.29 mA cm–2, VOC = 0.82 V, and FF = 0.66). The suitable energy offsets between the donor and the acceptor, high and balanced charge-carrier mobility, and the optimal morphology of the blend film contributed to the high performance of PE44:Y6 combination. A Wide Bandgap Polymer Donor Composed of Benzodithiophene and Oxime-Substituted Thiophene for High-Performance Organic Solar Cells.

Abstract:Oxime-substituted thiophene (TO) is used as an acceptor (A) unit to copolymerize with the benzodithiophene (BDT) donor (D) unit to form a novel D-A polymer donor, PBDTTO, which has a low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital energy level (EHOMO) of -5.60 eV and a wide bandgap of 2.03 eV, forming complementary absorption and matching energy levels with the narrow bandgap nonfullerene acceptors. Organic solar cells using PBDTTO and Y6 as the donor and acceptor, respectively, exhibited a JSC of 27.03 mA cm-2, a VOC of 0.83 V, and a fill factor of 0.59, reaching a high power conversion efficiency of 13.29%. The unencapsulated devices show good long-term stability in ambient air. Compared with the acceptor monomers used in other high-performance BDT-based D-A polymer donors, which are synthesized tediously in low yields, the TO acceptor monomer can be conveniently synthesized in only two steps with a high overall yield of 70%. These results demonstrate that TO unit can be used as a promising acceptor unit for developing BDT-based D-A polymer donors at low cost while maintaining high photovoltaic performance.
Electrochromic and photovoltaic properties of benzothiadiazole-based donor-acceptor conjugated polymers with oligo(ethylene glycol) side chains

Abstract:Introduced oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) chains into high-performance donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated polymers is a promising strategy to control the π-π stacking, energy levels, solubility, and electrical properties. In this work, a series of novel PDTBF polymers (PDTBF-DTh, PDTBF-ThSe, and PDTBF-Th) were synthesized based on the typical benzothiadiazole-thiophene (BT-Th)-based polymer substituted with OEG side chains to investigate their electrochromic (EC) and photovoltaic performance. The resultant PDTBF polymers had fast switching speed (i.e., chlorobenzene-prepared PDTBF-Th EC film: Tc0.9 = 1.8 s, Tb0.9 = 1.0 s), and high coloration efficiencies (i.e., chlorobenzene-prepared PDTBF-ThSe EC film: 255.50 cm2 C−1). Moreover, the PDTBF-DTh:Y6-based device shows a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.11%. Due to the induced amphiphilic OEG side chains on the backbone of the conjugated polymer, these materials also exhibited green solvent processing potential. It is worth noting that these PDTBF polymers exhibited much wider optical bandgaps (1.95 eV–2.16 eV) than other reported PDTBF polymers (mostly narrow band gaps: 1.40–1.70 eV), due to the format of linkage between OEG side chains and thiophene units. It is an effective strategy to control the optical properties of the conjugated polymers using OEG side chain engineering investigation.
