Abstract:The nanoencapsulation of hydrophobic compounds by miniemulsion polymerization, a convenient one-step encapsulation technique for nanocapsules, was investigated in terms of the thermodynamics and kinetics. The encapsulation was achieved by polymerization inducing phase separation within minidroplets dispersed in an aqueous phase. Thermodynamic factors (the level and type of surfactant, the level of the hydrophilic comonomer, and the monomer/paraffin ratio), kinetic factors (the level of the crosslinking agent or chain-transfer agent), and nucleation modes were all found to have a great influence on the latex morphology. Specifically, for a styrene/paraffin system, there were optimum levels of sodium dodecyl sulfate (1.0 wt %), the hydrophilic comonomer (1.0 wt % methyl acrylate acid), and the chain-transfer agent (0.2 wt % n-dodecanethiol) for obtaining well-defined nanocapsules of paraffin with a styrene/paraffin ratio of 1:1. When the styrene/paraffin ratio was reduced, however, it was more difficult to achieve a fully encapsulated particle morphology. Homogeneous nucleation could compete with encapsulation, and this resulted in a pure polymer particle and a half-moon morphology. Conditions were also found under which complete encapsulation could be observed with a water-soluble initiator (potassium persulfate), contrary to certain reports. Replacing potassium persulfate with an oil-soluble initiator (2,2-azo-bisisobutyronitrile) had little influence on the morphology under those conditions. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsule is a kind of composite particle with special morphology,which synthesis techniques has become one of the research hotspots in the field of nanometer science.The approaches of self-assembly,template,dendrimer and miniemulsion polymerization and their recent developments are described in detail,as well as the prospects,advantages and disadvantages of each approach.Moreover,the approach of miniemulsion polymerization has big potentials and wide prospect for the industrialization of polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules as its simple,environment-friendly and efficient preparation technique.Especially,the interfacially confined reversible addition fragmentation transfer(RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization combines the living polymerization of RAFT polymerization with the droplet nucleation mechanism of miniemulsion polymerization,the structure(size,morphology and thickness of shell) and compose(polymeric shell and functional group) of the polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules sub-micro/nanocapsule can be exactly tuned by the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization,and the polymeric nano-shell with much higher crosslinking degree can be fabricated.

Abstract:Miniemulsion polymerization with an amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)- block-polystyrene reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer agent as a surfactant and polymerization mediator is used to synthesize highly uniform nanocapsules. The nanocapsules with uniform structures, which include particle size, shell thickness, and shape symmetry, could be achieved by the post-addition of a small amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Although the solid particles seem unavoidable, the 'pure' uniform core-shell structures are easily collected by centrifugation.

Abstract:Interfacial radical miniemulsion polymerization was constructed to be general process for nanoencapsulation and the preparation of nanocapsules by using an amphiphilic reversible addition - fragmentation transfer (RAFT) agent with the R group of poly(methyl acrylic acid-co-styrene) as a reactive surfactant. Styrene and n-nonadecane were used as a model of monomer and core materials, respectively. It was found that the fragmental R radicals, which exited out of the droplets into the water phase, could trigger the homogeneous nucleation. When the homogeneous nucleation rather than the monomer droplet nucleation became the dominant mechanism of the particle formation, a large fraction of solid particles would be coformed with the nanocapsules. By decreasing pH values, we could decrease the hydrophilicity of R radicals and thus suppress the formation of the solid particles from the homogeneous nucleation. For the current model system, when values were decreased from pH 8.12 to 6.45, the fraction of nanocapsules linearly increased from 18 to 94%. In the middle pH values very uniform nanocapsules were obtained accompanying a few of the solid particles.

Abstract:The hollow polymeric nanoparticles of poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) of ultra-thin shell were synthesized by the interfacial RAFT miniemulsion polymerization with various particle sizes, void fractions and crosslinking degrees. With the void fraction increased, the hollow nanoparticles were more likely to collapse once dried. This collapse could be suppressed by simply increasing the level of crosslinker. The fraction of the collapsed hollow particles decreased nearly linearly with the increasing level of crosslinker. The non-collapsed hollow nanoparticles with a void fraction about 60% and shell thickness of 11.5 nm were fabricated with the crosslinker (divinylbenzene) of 0.67 mass fraction based on monomers. The resulted polymeric shell of the hollow nanoparticles was mesoporous, which had high surface area 514 m2/g, extremely large pore volume 2.74 ml/g and a most probable pore diameter of 9 nm. The structures of the hollow nanoparticles were mechanically stable not only in the solvent but also under harsh conditions like high temperature (200 °C) and strong shear. Additionally, the hollow nanoparticles were able to be fully re-dispersed in the solvent. The average hollow particle diameter was tuned from 70 nm to 199 nm by decreasing the level of the amphiphilic RAFT agent. The shell thickness was tuned from 10.6 nm to 19.3 nm by changing the core/shell ratios.

Abstract:Nanocapsules made of a cross-linked poly(dodecafluoroheptyl acrylate) shell were successfully synthesized by interfacial RAFT miniemulsion polymerization. The well-defined hollow fluorinated polymer structures were obtained by the subsequent removal of the liquid core materials. The core/shell ratio could be easily tuned up to 1:1 by changing the conditions. In the cases of high core/shell ratio of 1:2 and 1:1, the nanocapsules were severely deformed, which was improved by increasing the cross-linker amount up to 30 wt.-%. It was concluded that the utility of the interfacial RAFT miniemulsion polymerization overcame the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers in a conventional miniemulsion polymerization.
Synthesis of Organic-inorganic Hybrid Nanocapsules by Using Low Molecular Weight Droplets as Template

Abstract:A novel nanocapsules were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization the using low molecular weight droplets as the template. Styrene and 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate(MPS), which contain vinyl and Si-OR groups, are copolymerized on the surface of the well dispersed isooctane droplets to form capsules. With the free radical copolymerization, the Si-OR groups can be hydrolyzed and condensed into Si-O-Si inorganic network. The diameter of the capsules is about 98 nm and the void fraction is about 70%. The morphology of the capsules was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, and the microstructures of the capsules were characterized by infrared spectrometry. The effects of the polymerization methods and monomer volume fraction on the morphology were discussed. It is found that the initial volume fraction of the monomer in the recipe must be lower than 36% to obtain capsules, and higher MPS volume fraction is favor in the formation of capsules, but a higher MPS content in capsules will lead to collapse. Finally, the mechanism of this synthetic process was interpreted by thermodynamic and kinetic analysis.

Abstract:Core/shell microcapsules with low‐permeability membranes and controlled morphology are crucial for the delivery and controlled release of fragrance molecules, pharmaceuticals, inks, or vitamins. Design criteria for next generation microcapsules must include chemical and mechanical stability, and also provide enhanced substrate interactions to improve deposition onto relevant complex surfaces. Here, a coupled approach is presented to synthesize core/shell delivery systems by interfacial polymerization to enhance both the microcapsule–substrate interactions and the mechanical properties of the capsules to induce a burst‐type release. By combining membrane synthesis, nonlinear mechanics, interfacial rheology, analysis of mass transfer, and capsule morphology generated during interfacial polymerization, large permanent deformations into the capsule geometry are programmed, resulting in chemically stable, yet mechanically rupturing microcapsules with anisotropic geometry. To promote interactions and capsule adhesion onto complex substrates, the capsule contact area is controlled to form prominent “suction cup” shaped rims. These capsules have favorable, far‐reaching electrostatic interactions with oppositely charged substrates such as glass, hair, skin, or fabric. By modulating membrane mechanical properties and morphology during synthesis, formulation‐independent physical criteria are used to improve the overall performance of a functional delivery system while expanding knowledge of the key parameters influencing the interfacial polymerization process and membrane formation. Anisotropic core/shell microcapsules with “suction cup” morphologies provide enhanced affinity on complex substrates, such as the surface of human hair. The mechanics and permeability of the capsule membrane can be designed to synthesize chemically stable, yet mechanically rupturing targeted delivery systems for low‐molecular‐weight payloads.

Nanoengineering of Polymeric Capsules with A Shell-In-Shell Structure

Abstract:Polymeric capsules possessing a shell-in-shell structure were fabricated by assembling layers of polyelectrolytes with interlayers of silica nanoparticles onto microspheres of melamine formaldehyde. Subsequently the cores were removed with hydrochloric acid and the silica layers with hydrofluoric acid. Removal of the silica layers leaves an aqueous phase of a poly(allylamine hydrochloride) solution between an outer and an inner polyelectrolyte shell. The interlayer thickness could be varied by the diameter of silica particles or by the number of deposition steps. The double-shell structure of the microcapsules was determined by scanning force microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy on ultramicrotome sections in detail. In contrast to one-shell capsules of polyelectrolytes, the permeability for small molecules does not change with time and temperature. In addition, the shell-in-shell capsules exhibit a remarkably higher mechanical stability as shown by experiments of osmotically induced deformations.

Abstract:AbstractA water‐soluble comonomer, N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), and an oil‐soluble crosslinker, divinylbenzene (DVB), have been combined in a system for the synthesis of nanocapsules with crosslinked shells through interfacial miniemulsion polymerization by encapsulating a liquid nonsolvating hydrocarbon. Oligomers of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) were dehydrated and separated from the aqueous phase and were adsorbed by the nanodroplets or latex particles and then anchored at their interfaces by means of a crosslinking reaction. Nanocapsules were then formed through encapsulation of the hydrocarbon by the newly produced polymers at the interfaces of the droplets. The crosslinked structure gradually grew to stabilize the shell morphology. The incorporation of NIPAM into the shell copolymers has been verified by FTIR and solid‐state 13C NMR data. The fact that the number of nanocapsules increases with increasing amounts of DVB and NIPAM supports the formation of nanocapsules following interfacial (co)polymerization. Therefore, a mechanism for the formation of nanocapsules through interfacial (co)polymerization induced by NIPAM and DVB is proposed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Polymer microparticles used for drug encapsulation and delivery have various surface morphologies depending on the type of formulation ingredients and parameters of the manufacture process. This works aims at investigating the critical parameters governing the morphology of microparticles and to underline the influence of their surface state on the drug release. The classical fabrication process by the "emulsion-solvent evaporation" is addressed using poly(ɛ-caprolactone) as the polymer and methylene chloride as the volatile organic solvent. The typical surfactants poly(vinyl alcohol) and polysorbate 80 have been considered. Scanning electron microscopy observations showed the various surface morphologies mainly depending on the stirring rate, the viscosity of the oil phase and by the presence of inappropriate surfactants. Because of arrested coalescence during solvent evaporation, the evaporation of the organic solvent causing particles hardening is the most important parameter that controls the morphology. Indeed, slow evaporation allows partial coalescence of the soft particles swollen by the organic solvent, whereas the particles morphology is frozen rapidly upon fast evaporation, thus preventing damaged surface states. Moreover, an effective stabilizing system for the primary emulsion is also a determining factor to control the final morphology. The morphology of the particles has a definite influence on the drug delivery of cholecalciferol. The surface morphology should be taken into consideration in the design of polymer microparticles because it allows a control over the drug release kinetics.
Optimising the Shell Thickness-To-Radius Ratio for the Fabrication of Oil-Encapsulated Polymeric Microspheres

Abstract:Core-shell microspheres with,controllable shell thickness-to-radius (TIR) ratios were fabricated using coaxial electrospraying for hydrophobic drug delivery using Sudan Red (dye) as a model hydrophobic active. Systematic investigations were conducted to determine the effects of several parameters on the particle diameter, shell thickness, and structure. These included polymer concentration, flow rate, applied voltage, collection distance and needle-to-ground electrode distance. The resulting microspheres were characterized by SEM and optical microscopy, which showed spherical core-shell geometries with tunable particle diameters and TIR ratios ranging from 30 to 70 mu m and between 0.12 and 0.3, respectively. FTIR was used to assess material stability during the one-step preparation of microspheres. MTT assay and fluorescence microscopy indicated no significant effect on cell growth behavior over a 24 h period when assessed using variable particle concentrations (between 10 pg/ml and 10 mg/ml). In-vitro release of the oil-soluble dye exhibited a fast release onset followed by a sustained release which was controlled by changing particle size or T/R ratio. The results indicate potential applications for core-shell encapsulation and controlled release of hydrophobic drugs using the materials and processes described. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Influences of N-Isopropylacrylamide on the Morphologies of Nanocapsules Prepared by Miniemulsion Polymerization

Abstract:The comonomer, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), was introduced in the system for synthesis of nanocapules through styrene minlemulsion polymerization by using low molecular weight hydrocarbon as template. The oligomers of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) dehydrated and separated from water were adsorbed by the droplets of styrene miniemulsion. Due to the thermodynamic force and electrostatic interaction, the oligomer radicals of PNIPAAm anchoring at the interface of droplets make the interface to be the locus of polymerization. Monomerrs diffused from the internal part of droplets to supply for further polymerization. The nanocapsules can be obtained through the encapsulation of hydrocarbon by the newly-produced polymers separating at the interface of droplets. The morphologies were observed by TEM. The surface tension of miniemusion was measured by a contact angle determinator. The influences on the morphologies of final product such as the amount of NIPAAm, the ratio of monomer and hydrocarbon, the amount of crosslinking agent and the kinds of emulsifier and initiator pair were studied. The results with different amounts of NIPAAm showed that the homogenous nucleation was induced by the excess amount of NIPAAm which was unfavorable to form nanocapsules. With the increase of oil monomer/hydrocarbon ratio the amount of solid particles increased because the solubility of the NIPAAm in the droplets increased which resulted in the formation of solid particles. The nanocapsules with stable shells were obtained through introducing an appropriate amount of DVB. The entry of the oligomer radicals into nanocapsules was influenced by the initiator/surfactant pair depending on the protection ability of surfactants,the steric hindrance of the ionic groups of the surfactant or the electrostatic repellence.

Abstract:Abstract Droplet microfluidics has enabled the synthesis of polymeric particles with controlled sizes, shell thickness, and morphologies. Here, we report the Janus to core-shell structural evolution of biphasic droplets formed in a microfluidic flow-focusing device (MFFD) for the synthesis of polymer microcapsules with oil core/thickness-tunable shell via off-chip photo- and thermally induced polymerization. First, nanoliter-sized biphasic Janus droplets comprising an acrylate monomer and silicone oil were generated in a co-flowing aqueous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution in an MFFD on a glass chip. Immediately following their break-off, the produced Janus droplets started to change their geometry from Janus to core-shell structure comprising a single silicone-oil core and an acrylate-monomer shell by the minimization of interfacial energy. Thus, we could produce monodisperse core-shell drops with average diameters of 105–325 μm, coefficient of variation (CV) values of 1.0–4.5%, and shell thickness of 1–67 μm. Subsequently, these drops were synthesized to fabricate polymeric microcapsules with tunable shell thickness via photo- and thermally induced polymerization. By increasing the concentration of the photo- and thermal initiator, we successfully produced thinner and ultra-thin shell (800 nm thickness) microcapsules. The surface structure of resulting particles was smooth in photopolymerization and porous in thermal polymerization.

Abstract:Polyamide microcapsules have gathered significant research interest during the past years due to their good barrier properties; however, the potential of their application is limited due to the fragility of the polymeric membrane. Fully aliphatic polyamide microcapsules (PA MCs) were herein prepared from ethylene diamine and sebacoyl chloride via interfacial polymerization, and the effect of key encapsulation parameters, i.e., monomers ratio, core solvent, stirring rate and time during the polymerization step, were examined concerning attainable process yield and microcapsule properties (shell molecular weight and thermal properties, MC size and morphology). The process yield was found to be mainly influenced by the nature of the organic solvent, which was correlated to the diffusion potential of the diamine from the aqueous phase to the organic core through the polyamide membrane. Thus, spherical microcapsules with a size between 14 and 90 μm and a yield of 33% were prepared by using toluene as core solvent. Milder stirring during the polymerization step led to an improved microcapsule morphology; yet, the substantial improvement of mechanical properties remains a challenge.

Abstract:AbstractNanocapsules with an oily core and an organic/inorganic hybrid shell were elaborated by miniemulsion (co)polymerization of styrene, divinylbenzene, γ‐methacryloyloxy propyl trimethoxysilane, and N‐isopropyl acrylamide. The hybrid copolymer shell membrane was formed by polymerization‐induced phase separation at the interface of the oily nanodroplets with water. It was shown that the size, size distribution, and colloidal stability of the miniemulsion droplets were extremely dependent on the nature of the oil phase, the monomer content and the surfactant concentration. The less water‐soluble the hydrocarbon template and the higher the monomer content, the better the droplet stability. The successful formation of nanocapsules with the targeted core‐shell morphology (i.e., a liquid core surrounded by a solid shell) was evidenced by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. Both nanocapsules and nanoparticles were produced by polymerization of the miniemulsion droplets. The proportion of nanoparticles increased with increasing monomer concentration in the oil phase. These undesirable nanoparticles were presumably formed by homogeneous nucleation as we showed that micellar nucleation could be neglected under our experimental conditions even for high surfactant concentrations. The introduction of γ‐methacryloyloxy propyl trimethoxysilane was considered to be the main reason for homogeneous nucleation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Complex Polymeric Microstructures with Programmable Architecture via Pickering Emulsion-Templated In Situ Polymerization

Abstract:Aside from smooth and spherical microcapsules, the concept of tailoring complex polymeric microstructures is being taken a step ahead due to their great demand in various applications and fundamental studies in the subjects of microfluidics and nanotechnology. Size, shape, and morphology are of paramount importance for their functional performance and various applications. However, simple, inexpensive, versatile, and high-throughput techniques for fabricating microcapsules with controlled morphology remain a bottleneck for discoveries in the subject of polymer colloids. In this paper, we directly fulfill this need by reporting a novel approach of Pickering emulsion-templated in situ polymerization for tailoring complex polymeric microstructures comprised of a composite shell of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO2 NP)-embedded poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) (polyMUF) and a core of hexadecane (HD, soft template). At first, we hydrophobize TiO2 NPs by chemisorbing long-chain biobased myristic acid via a bidentate chelating complex and precisely tune their wettability by varying the grafting density of myristic acid to obtain highly stable oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion. Thereafter, we employ the optimized TiO2 NPs in the intended encapsulation strategy that enables various microstructures and morphologies with the particle diameter ranging from 5 to 20 μm. Careful manipulation of reaction parameters and copolymer components leads to novel complex microstructures: smooth, raspberry-like, partially budded, hollow, filled, single-holed, and closed-cell-like microstructures. Particle properties such as morphology, size, shell thickness, and core content are governed by the TiO2 NP content, core-to-shell ratio, copolymer component, conversion, and pH value. Based on the results of a series of control experiments, novel mechanisms for the formation of various such microstructures are proposed.

Abstract:The combination of phospholipids and block-copolymers yields advanced hybrid nanoparticles through the self-assembly process in an aqueous environment. The physicochemical features of the lipid/polymer components, like the lipid–polymer molar ratio, the macromolecular architecture of the block copolymer, the main transition temperature of the phospholipid, as well as the formulation and preparation protocol parameters, are some of the most crucial parameters for the formation of hybrid lipid/polymer vesicles and for the differentiation of their morphology. The morphology, along with other physicochemical nanoparticle characteristics are strictly correlated with the nanoparticle's later biological behavior after being administered, affecting interactions with cells, biodistribution, uptake, toxicity, drug release, etc. In the present study, a structural evaluation of hybrid lipid–polymer nanoparticles based on cryo-TEM studies was undertaken. Different kinds of hybrid lipid–polymer nanoparticles were designed and developed using phospholipids and block copolymers with different preparation protocols. The structures obtained ranged from spherical vesicles to rod-shaped structures, worm-like micelles, and irregular morphologies. The obtained morphologies were correlated with the formulation and preparation parameters and especially the type of lipid, the polymeric guest, and their ratio.

Abstract:Hybrid nonacapsules are synthesized by miniemulsion (co)polymerization of styrene and 3-trimethoxysilylpropylmethacrylate silane (MPS) in one step. Hydrocarbon droplets are encapsulated by organic-inorganic hybrid material, which is formed by simultaneous free radical polymerization reaction and hydrolysis-condensation reaction of organosilane in MPS. The morphology and the microstructure ire characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), solid-state NMR. and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The capsule morphology is achieved by polymerization inducing phase separation within minidroplets dispersed in aqueous phase. The feasibility of the final morphology is analyzed by thermodynamic and kinetic factors first. Particle nucleation processes with different formulation are followed by DLS, and it has a great influence on the latex morphology. Monomer/hydrocarbon ratio in the droplets and MPS fraction in the capsules are also of great important to the morphology due to their influence on phase separation behavior and mechanic properties of capsules, respectively. Finally, the loading and releasing processes of this capsule are monitored by ultraviolet-visible (UV) measurement.
Revealing Formation Process of Microcapsules During in Situ Polymerization Via Confocal Laser Scanning Fluorescence Microscopy

Abstract:Paraffin core/polystyrene shell microcapsules were prepared by in situ polymerization, the formation process of the microcapsules was monitored using confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three-dimensional images were reconstructed with CLSM, which presented the early stage morphology transformation process of the microcapsules along with polymerization as described below: firstly, the separated patch appeared on the equator of the emulsified droplets, next congregated to form a belt, and then changed into a bowl-like structure. SEM observation clearly revealed that the subsequent morphologies of the microcapsules turned into a shell with a hole, and finally, a complete filled shell was achieved. The conversion of styrene was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The formation process of microcapsules was proved to be formed by the two processes: chemical reaction-induced separation and physical migration. Furthermore the mechanics analysis was conducted on the intermediate states of core/shell particles. The results were consistent with the CLSM and SEM observation, which supply effective evidence for the mechanism of the microcapsule-forming process on the basis of particles rotation.
