Abstract:Many consumer studies have confirmed that in different international settings ethnocentric consumers mostly prefer domestic products. Consequently, consumer ethnocentrism has been considered as a prominent informal barrier for international trade. Even though an ethnocentrism as a personal trait has been a subject of international management studies, ethnocentrism was rarely observed within a context of managers’ or owners’ decisions that affect business orientations. The purpose of this study was to explore a link among consumer ethnocentrism and ethnocentric business orientations of graduate students as future managers and business owners. The main goal was to and derive implications relevant for consumer and organizational marketing in international environment. The main motivation behind the study was to explore potential extension of consumer ethnocentrism on managerial ethnocentric decision making, and consequently, on ethnocentric business orientation. Research was conducted on a convenience sample of 219 business economics graduates from the University of Rijeka, Croatia and from the University of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Multi-Group Structural Equation Modeling has been employed to explore a linkage among observed concepts. Empirical results indicated a differences among sub-samples from two countries in level of consumer ethnocentrism and its impacts on preferences towards domestic products. However, significant positive relation has been found between consumer ethnocentrism and ethnocentric business orientation in case of both observed groups. Consumer ethnocentrism has been confirmed as predictor of ethnocentric tendencies towards domestic products as well as predictor of ethnocentric business orientations of youth as a future managers and business owners. Research results confirmed that consumer ethnocentrism can be extended from consumer preferences and orientation towards domestic products to managers’ ethnocentric decision making, providing ethnocentric business orientation.

Abstract:Purpose With the crescent globalisation together with economic and food crisis, consumers are increasingly confronted with food products from different origins and appeals to consume "national". If many food products can be related to a specific region or country, many are sold as commodities with Portuguese origin indication. One factor influencing the purchase behaviour of domestic food products is the consumer ethnocentrism (CE) characteristic. The aim of this paper is to study consumers' purchase behaviour intention towards "produce in Portugal" fruits and vegetables applying a CE extended model of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire was presented to random sample of 700 individuals older than 18 and responsible for the household food purchase by computer-assisted telephone interview (CAT) system. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was conducted to examine direct and indirect effects of attitude (ATT), subjective norms (SuBNs), perceived behavioural controls (PBCNTRLs), intention and self-congruity on domestic fresh fruits and vegetables purchases. Findings Findings suggest that TPB model is applicable in determining the consumers' intention to buy domestic fruits and vegetables in Portugal. CE has been shown to successfully influence purchase intention. Research limitations/implications This study provides the food industry and retail with informative basis about which mechanisms underlie the consumers' intention to buy domestic food. Also, this study provides useful insight into how different food categories and label affect the consumers' intentions, which can serve for communication strategies in order to increase purchase of domestic products as fruits and vegetables. New food categories should be studied. Originality/value This study gives a new approach on Portuguese consumer ethnocentric tendencies and opens a discussion on consumer purchase intention on Portuguese low value food products. This gives a first insight on Portuguese consumer ethnocentric behaviour.

THE ROLE OF CONSUMER ETHNOCENTRISM AND HABIT IN POTATO CHIP PURCHASES: AN EXTENSION OF TPB

Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the factors underlying domestic product (potato chip purchases) using an extended model of theory of planned behaviour (TPB). A systematic sample of 348 Croatian potato chip buyers was surveyed. Structural Equation Modelling by Partial Least Squares was used to test the hypotheses. The strongest positive predictor of this intention was the attitude about the purchase of domestic potato chips. The perceived behavioural control did not have a significant impact on the behaviour (actual purchase), while intention was a strong predictor of the intended behaviour. Consumer ethnocentrism predicted the attitudes, while habit had a strong impact on all variables in the TPB model. This study extended the TPB model by adding two constructs, habit and consumer ethnocentrism, and by investigating their predictive impacts. While TPB is usually used to predict the prosocial and healthy behaviour, this study extended the previous knowledge by focusing on snacks (potato chips), which is expected to be more habit-driven than planned.

Abstract:Abstract: Research question: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the factors that influence consumers' intentions when buying foreign brands, and then the purchase itself. Motivation: The business environment is experiencing an extensive change and it has become very demanding for companies to retain customers as well as market share. Companies must learn to adapt to changes in order to survive in the market, and therefore need to be aware of the needs of their customers and their purchasing decisions. The rise in consumer awareness has led consumers to opt for well-known and high-quality foreign brands. Hence, if companies hope to outperform their competitors, they need to persuade consumers to purchase their products and brands. Idea: The main objective of the research is to be based on previous research in this field to find out whether perceived quality, prestige, perceived value and environmental impact affect the intention of domestic consumers to buy foreign brands, and consequently the purchase of these foreign brands. Data: The survey was conducted on the territory of the Republic of Serbia by means of a questionnaire and included 158 respondents. Data were collected from the respondents electronically during a period of about one month. Tools: Statistical analyses of all collected data (utilizing linear correlation, multiple regression analysis, T-test of sample independence and ANOVA) were used to draw conclusions about the relationships between the observed variables and to determine differences in the mean values between individual categories of respondents in terms of buying foreign brands. Findings: Multiple regression analysis confirmed the statistically significant influence of perceived quality and perceived value on the intention of consumers in Serbia to buy foreign brands. Other factors do not have a statistically significant effect on consumer intention. Also, a simple regression analysis revealed a statistically significant influence of consumer intention on the act of purchase. At the very end of the paper, it was determined that statistically significant differences regarding the purchase of foreign brands existed when respondents were observed by gender and education levels, while age did not have a statistical significance. Contribution: This research has a scientific and practical contribution in terms of collecting information about the factors that influence the consumers` intension to buy foreign brands.

Abstract:Abstract How consumers will behave when buying wine depends on many factors, among which economic, social, demographic, psychological and situational ones are highlighted. Research in wine consumer attitudes in Serbia is aimed at creating appropriate marketing strategies. This paper analyses the influences of demographic factors on wine consumption.Special attention was paid to the impact of the wine characteristics that affect the decision to buy the local or imported wines with geographical origin. It should be added that wine tourism is particularly important in increasing the sales of wine by direct and indirect means.To this aim, 1.705 wine buyers and consumers were interviewed during 2015. Based on Chi-test, it has been proven that the age group affects the decision on the purchase of wine. Understanding consumer motivation is possible through an adequate marketing approach which will provide increased sales of domestic wine and the quicker development of the national market.

Abstract:Globalization of the market has diminished the importance of national borders, so that an increasing number of companies are internationalizing their business. It is very important that the company’s management investigates the characteristics of the foreign market in which it wants to operate. It is necessary to formulate and implement adequate marketing strategy, which will take into account ethnocentric tendencies and the cultural framework of consumers. Consumer ethnocentrism usually comes to the fore during crisis situations and a number of consumers want to strengthen the national economy by purchasing domestic products and services. On the other hand, a number of consumers have developed a high degree of cosmopolitanism and cultural intelligence, which implies preferences for foreign brands over domestic ones. The aim of this scientific paper is to identify some of the most important drivers of consumer ethnocentrism (patriotism, conservatism, dogmatism), and then to examine whether consumer ethnocentrism, cosmopolitanism and cultural intelligence through their basic factors (metacognitive, cognitive, motivational and behavioral factors) influence the formation of consumer attitudes towards foreign brands. It also examines whether the positive attitude of consumers towards foreign brands affects the loyalty of consumers to foreign brands, because it is necessary for companies to move from transactional marketing to customer relationship management, because loyal consumers are a stable source of income and enable long-term profitable business. Empirical research was conducted using a survey method in the Republic of Serbia (Belgrade, Kragujevac). The results of the research showed that consumer ethnocentrism has a negative statistically significant impact, and consumer cosmopolitanism and cultural intelligence have a positive statistically significant impact on consumer attitudes towards foreign brands, and a positive attitudes implies consumer loyalty to foreign brands.

Abstract:Research Question: This paper examines consumer ethnocentrism (CE) as marketing challenge for companies. Motivation: The purpose of the paper is to examine the antecedents and consequences of CE, who high-ethnocentric consumers are and whether CE can be used in marketing. Data: Results are derived from primary data collected from a consumer sample in Serbia during 2016 in retail stores of different retail chains in Belgrade. Sample included 200 examinees between 16 and 74 years. Tools: CE is measured by CETSCALE (consumer ethnocentric tendencies scale, 17 statements) developed by Shimp and Sharma (1987). Findings: The results indicate that CE can best be explained by a combination of national culture, the characteristics of consumers, product categories, the perceived value of companies and the integrated marketing communications of companies and countries. Furthermore, the results show that significant differences in CE exist between different groups of consumers and product categories. The theoretical contribution and the managerial impactions based on the findings are provided. The conceptual frameworks (Figure 1 and Figure 2) represent the theoretical contribution. The frameworks can be used by marketers for their effective target marketing (market segmentation, market targeting and market positioning). This study underlines the different practical implications of the high level of CE for domestic and foreign companies in the Serbian market. Domestic companies have the opportunity to encourage CE. This study provides marketers with useful marketing strategies and tactics for domestic and foreign companies with respect to CE. The high level of CE is a marketing opportunity for domestic companies. Foreign companies face a bigger challenge with certain product categories which are directed towards certain groups - high-ethnocentric consumers. Particular challenges for foreign companies are promotional campaigns of domestic companies and governments in countries that are directed towards domestic products purchasing. Contribution: This study suggests the marketing strategies and tactics for the encouragement of CE for domestic companies. On the other hand, the high level of CE is a marketing threat to foreign companies. This study suggests the marketing strategies and tactics for decreasing the influence of CE for foreign companies. The results of this study can be used both for further research and in practice.

Abstract:Due to the process of globalization, consumer attitudes are formed under the influence of numerous factors, which are not analyzed significantly when it comes to the company's business in the domestic market, but can have important implications when the company's management decides to internationalize the business. Country of origin information is an important indicator of product quality, superiority and reliability. Also, within the process of globalization, ethnocentric consumer tendencies are becoming an important and crucial factor for multinational companies operating outside their domestic market. On the other hand, a certain number of consumers have dilemma whether to support the national economy by buying domestic products, or to decide to buy better quality foreign products. The high degree of consumer xenocentrism, as well as the high degree of development of cultural intelligence and global consumer culture, implies preferences towards foreign brands in relation to domestic ones. The research was conducted in order to determine whether the image of the country of origin (cultural heritage, fashion capital, technological progress) and consumer xenocentrism have a positive impact on consumer attitudes towards foreign brands, as well as whether the formed positive consumer attitude affects their loyalty to foreign brands. Also, the research examines the moderating effect of cultural intelligence (metacognitive, cognitive, motivational and behavioral factors) in relation to these variables. Empirical research has been conducted. Statistical analysis was performed on a sample of 318 respondents from the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The results showed that these variables have a positive impact on consumer attitudes and loyalty to foreign brands, so the study offers important practical implications.

Abstract:The widening gap between production and domestic consumption has led Spain to become the country with the largest volume of wine exports, of which it has a global market share of 20.5%. Wineries in Spain have, in recent years, undergone important transformation and modernization processes, while their customers have simultaneously acquired more power than ever before owing to both the availability of information and the technological means required to access that information. The objectives of this paper are the following. We first wish to analyze current wine consumer behavior in an attempt to discover indicators associated with exploratory behavior, i.e., the willingness to try new and innovative products for the first time. We also attempt to understand the extent of wine consumers' demands in this new digital and technological world. The second goal is to analyze the changes that have taken place in the wine industry, which have come about as a result of the evolution of consumers' expectations and demands. The customer accordingly now plays a new role in this new quick change scenario, which involves aspects such as the intensive use of technology, advances in communication, digital transformation, etc. We consider that this could affect some aspects of business and have, therefore, chosen to analyze one of the most advanced Spanish wineries in order to examine its entrepreneurial orientation, strategy and level of technological and digital transformation when linked to adaptation to this new consumer behavior. The results and conclusions obtained will allow us to apply our findings in future research, during which we intend to expand our studies to wineries from other regions and countries.

Abstract:Understanding consumer behavior at the current market moment is very important for all companies that strive for achieving competitive advantage. Due to a number of factors that determine their attitudes and intentions in the purchasing process, consumers should be regarded as a very important resource. Having the knowledge of the concept of consumer ethnocentrism is highly important because this concept influences consumers' decision to purchase domestic products before foreign products. In the research of this phenomenon for consumers in Serbia, the method of factor analysis will be applied. The results highlight three factors that explain more than half of the variance of the dependent variable, that is, the three independent variables that determine the level of consumer ethnocentrism.

Abstract:The subject matter of the paper is research in consumer behavior in connection with the purchase of wines of both domestic and foreign brands on the market of the City of Niš. The paper is structured so as to perceive the issue from several aspects. In the first place, our wish was to determine whether the respondents are regular wine consumers, and which sorts of wine they consume, and how many of them are not wine regular consumers. An effort was made to determine consumer habits via survey research. The examination method that implied personal examination using a questionnaire was applied. The suitable sample included 230 respondents from the territory of the City of Niš. The research was conducted in November 2019. While processing the data, it was noticed that a larger number of the respondents were regular wine consumers, namely consuming specific brands. The respondents mainly preferred domestic producers' wines. The results obtained can be observed at the level of the strategic marketing of the offering companies. The research study provides an insight in connection with the different aspects of the consumer behavior of those who consume wine, both at the general level and in connection with the choice of brands.

Abstract:Ethnocentrism is a very sophisticated and complex phenomenon that attracts the attention of many scholars who study it from different angles. One specific approach, undoubtedly from the perspective of behavioural economics, is consumer ethnocentrism. Consumer ethnocentrism as a special phenomenon was created to study the link between marketing and consumer behaviour with the concept of ethnocentrism. This concept has been shown to have a greater impact on purchase intent than some traditional marketing approaches. Ethnocentrism has a significant impact on consumer attitudes towards foreign brands, purchase intentions and purchase decisions for products from Croatia and abroad. The main purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate the relationship between the ethnocentrism of different generations (Baby Boomers and Generation Z) and their purchase intention for domestic and foreign products. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire. 218 members of Generation Z and 223 members of Baby Boomers in the Republic of Croatia were included in the survey. The results showed that the high level of ethnocentrism among baby boomers is positively associated with the intention to purchase domestic products and negatively associated with the baby boomers’ intention to purchase foreign products from China and the former Yugoslavia. In addition, the likelihood of buying domestic products is higher where the level of ethnocentrism is higher. There is no correlation between the ethnocentrism of Generation Z and purchase intentions in general.

Abstract:Modern business conditions are characterized by frequent changes in consumer behavior. Consumer ethnocentrism researches are getting more important during economic downturns. The effects of the economic crisis, increased migratory trends and frequent social unrest reinforce consumers' ethnocentric tendencies. This paper examines the influence of socio-psychological factors on consumer ethnocentrism of citizens of the Republic of Serbia. Also, the paper examines the moderating effect of the national identity and the mediating effect of consumer demographic characteristics. It was conducted an empirical survey and for collecting date it was used the survey method. Statistical analysis was performed on a sample of 288 respondents from the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Research results show that collectivism and animosity towards the EU have a positive impact on consumer ethnocentrism, while the impact of cultural openness on consumer ethnocentrism is not statistically significant. Also, the results of the research show that the national identity has a positive moderating role in the relationship between collectivism and consumer ethnocentrism, as well as in the relationship of animosity towards the EU and consumer ethnocentrism, while in the relation of cultural openness and consumer ethnocentrism, national identity has no significant moderating role. Demographic characteristics have a significant mediating role in the relationship between collectivism and consumer ethnocentrism, as well as in the relation of animosity towards the EU and consumer ethnocentrism, while in relation to cultural openness and consumer ethnocentrism, demographic characteristics do not have a significant mediator role. The sample has some limitations, which should be kept in mind when interpreting particular results.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the relationship between consumer ethnocentrism, consumer cosmopolitanism, imported product judgment, and foreign product purchase intention in Vietnam. This paper tries to present its results empirically, which might be helpful in preparing a strategy for Vietnamese customers’ international purchasing behavior to increase competition at retail companies in Vietnam. It uses a questionnaire with a purposive random sampling of 311 customers in Vietnam. Analysis was conducted through a quantitative descriptive analysis, measurement of variable dimensions on the questionnaire using a seven-point Likert scale, and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the hypotheses. This study found that imported product judgment, consumer cosmopolitanism, social influence, and perceived behavioral control positively influence foreign product purchase intention, whereas customer ethnocentrism has a negative impact on that intention. The association between consumer cosmopolitanism and foreign product purchase intention is mediated by imported product evaluation and consumer ethnocentrism. At the same time, national identity does not affect consumer ethnocentrism and foreign product purchase intentions. Besides, this study offers some managerial implications for marketers in decisions linked to Vietnamese customers’ international purchasing behavior to increase competition in the domestic market. Abstract:Purpose Extending the Attitudes-Behavior-Context (ABC) theoretical framework by incorporating consumer expertise as an antecedent, the study investigates the intricate relationship between consumer attitudes toward locally produced goods (wine) and purchasing behavior, examined within the context of consumer ethnocentrism. Design/methodology/approach The study employed an online survey of Texas wine consumers (N = 895). To investigate consumer attitudes towards local wine, the data were first subjected to descriptive analyses, namely means comparison and chi-square tests. Subsequently, path analysis was employed to explore the hypothesized relationships within the proposed model. Findings While consumers with higher wine knowledge are less likely to choose local wines for various consumption occasions, consumers who are highly involved with wine tend to exhibit more favorable perceptions. Taste emerged as the strongest driver of purchase intent. Consumer ethnocentrism plays a critical role, boosting purchase intent for those with positive general attitudes and considering local wines for various occasions. However, this effect disappears when perceptions of the taste of regional wines are unfavorable, highlighting once again the critical role of taste in purchase decisions, even for ethnocentric consumers. Originality/value This study expands the ABC framework by incorporating consumer expertise with a product as a new antecedent, thereby broadening its applicability to consumer behavior research within an ethnocentric context.

Abstract:Consumers’ preferences for domestic over imported products have been investigated in various isolated studies, but never in a single model incorporating several in-group and out-group consumer orientations at the same time. Building on social identity theory, this study develops and tests—in two countries—a conceptual model that assesses the relative influence of consumer ethnocentrism, national identity, and consumer cosmopolitanism on consumers’ product judgments and willingness to buy domestic and foreign products. Furthermore, the study develops an empirically based typology of consumer segments using these sociopsychological traits and subsequently profiles them on consumption-relevant variables. The findings reveal several undiscovered patterns regarding the interplay of consumer ethnocentrism, national identity, and consumer cosmopolitanism as drivers of consumer behavior and offer managerial guidance on their relevance as segmentation variables.

Abstract:The globalisation of the market, the entry of new wine countries on the wine world map and changes in consumer lifestyles have led to a change in the perception of wine consumers. These circumstances lead to the need to identify and analyse the factors influencing consumer preferences and wine recognition. This study aims to identify the factors influencing wine quality recognition. The empirical research is based on a survey conducted during the WineRi wine fair in Rijeka in June 2021. A total of 169 people gave valid answers, which form the sample for this study. Based on the collected data, the authors developed a binary logistic regression model in which the participants’ perception of whether they recognised differences in the quality of wines was used as a dependent variable, while socio-demographic, wine consumption variables and variables connected to the wine selection and purchase process were used as independent variables. The results show that age, education, relationship status, household income and frequency of consumption influence the perception of the recognition of the quality of wine, as well as factors such as the perceived relationship between wine price and quality. The conclusions resulting from the analysis carried out might be helpful not only for scholars but also for wine producers when developing a wine product list and marketing strategy.

Abstract:Purpose In view of the increasingly dynamic ethnic composition of nation states in Europe and elsewhere, this paper aims to examine the effects of ethnic affiliation on ethnocentrism and domestic purchase bias, and to test a model of consumer ethnocentrism antecedents and outcomes in a multi‐ethnic transitional economy. Design/methodology/approach Empirical data were collected via personal interviews from 580 urban consumers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was, in the aftermath of violent ethnic conflicts in the Balkans, divided into two major sub‐regions inhabited by three clearly identifiable ethnic groups. A structural model with five first‐order reflective constructs was evaluated to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings The findings confirm that both national identity and nationalism are significant predictors of consumer ethnocentrism, and that ethnic affiliation has a direct effect on both consumer ethnocentrism and on domestic purchase bias. However, the antecedent nature of cultural openness in relation to consumer ethnocentrism was not confirmed. Practical implications While it has been suggested previously that, when consumers have dual allegiances, the construct of national identity may be of a lesser explanatory power, the results attest to the value of both nation‐state level constructs in the model as reliable predictors of consumer ethnocentrism. The findings also suggest that a differentiated marketing strategy may be warranted on entering multi‐ethnic markets. Originality/value Unlike most prior studies that tested ethnocentrism models across different countries with citizens of each country being addressed as a culturally/ethnically uniform group, this study does not limit in‐groups to a nation state, but examines groups based on ethnic affiliation.

Abstract:Although consumption is the cornerstone of economic growth, it is unquestionably one of the main reasons for the current degradation of the planet. Hence, it is necessary to understand consumers' different perceptions and behaviors regarding sustainable goods, as the solution will inevitably involve changing behaviors and promoting more sustainable consumption. In light of the challenges posed by sustainability within the wine sector, namely issues related to climate change, chemical exposure, and the availability of water and energy, and considering the industry's substantial environmental and social impacts, it is important to understand the factors influencing wine consumer behavior. This research explores sustainable wine consumption in Portugal. Based on a sample of 197 valid responses, collected in an online survey that took place from March 20 to April 30 of 2024, and applying the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework, the current study found that consumers' intention to consume sustainable wine is influenced by their attitudes, subjective norms, and sustainability awareness. Regarding the individuals' consumption of sustainable wine, this behavior is influenced by the intention to consume this wine, and by consumers' perceived behavioral control. The results also concluded that individuals' intention to consume sustainable wine is significantly different across marital status, professional occupation, level of education, and age. With these valuable insights, this study aimed to increase the available information on sustainable wine consumption, allowing different stakeholders, namely political decision makers, to develop and implement more efficient measures to promote sustainable wine consumption.

Abstract:The study investigated the effect of consumer ethnocentrism on the acceptance of imported grocery products in Harare, Zimbabwe. Using a cross-sectional survey of 505 consumers, independent-samples T-test, analysis of variance and structural equation modelling were used to test research hypotheses. Results show that gender, age and education significantly influence consumer ethnocentrism. Income was found to have an insignificant influence on consumer ethnocentrism. Results also show that consumer ethnocentrism had a negative effect on consumer attitude towards imported grocery products. Consumer attitude was found to have a positive effect on consumer intention to buy imported grocery products. Similarly, consumer ethnocentrism was found to negatively influence consumer's intention to purchase imported grocery products while consumer's intention was found to positively influence consumer's actual purchase behaviour towards imported grocery products. These findings have theoretical and practical implications.
