Abstract:Rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to deterioration of air quality in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region due to high loadings of PM2.5. Heavy aerosol pollution frequently occurs in winter, in close relation to the planetary boundary layer (PBL) meteorology. To unravel the physical processes that influence PBL structure and aerosol pollution in BTH, this study combined long-term observational data analyses, synoptic pattern classification, and meteorology–chemistry coupled simulations. During the winter of 2017 and 2018, Beijing and Tangshan often experienced heavy PM2.5 pollution simultaneously, accompanied by strong thermal inversion aloft. These concurrences of pollution in different cities were primarily regulated by the large-scale synoptic conditions. Using principal component analysis with geopotential height fields at the 850 hPa level during winter, two typical synoptic patterns associated with heavy pollution in BTH were identified. One pattern is characterized by a southeast-to-north pressure gradient across BTH, and the other is associated with high pressure in eastern China. Both synoptic types feature warmer air temperature at 1000 m a.g.l., which could suppress the development of the PBL. Under these unfavorable synoptic conditions, aerosols can modulate PBL structure through the radiative effect, which was examined using numerical simulations. The aerosol radiative effect can significantly lower the daytime boundary layer height through cooling the surface layer and heating the upper part of the PBL, leading to the deterioration of air quality. This PBL–aerosol feedback is sensitive to the aerosol vertical structure, which is more effective when the synoptic pattern can distribute more aerosols to the upper PBL.
Rapid Formation of Intense Haze Episodes Via Aerosol-Boundary Layer Feedback in Beijing

Abstract:Although much effort has been put into studying air pollution, our knowledge of the mechanisms of frequently occurring intense haze episodes in China is still limited. In this study, using 3 years of measurements of air pollutants at three different height levels on a 325m Beijing meteorology tower, we found that a positive aerosol-boundary layer feedback mechanism existed at three vertical observation heights during intense haze polluted periods within the mixing layer. This feedback was characterized by a higher loading of PM2.5 with a shallower mixing layer. Modelling results indicated that the presence of PM2.5 within the boundary layer led to reduced surface temperature, relative humidity and mixing layer height during an intensive haze episode. Measurements showed that the aerosol-boundary layer feedback was related to the decrease in solar radiation, turbulent kinetic energy and thereby suppression of the mixing layer. The feedback mechanism can explain the rapid formation of intense haze episodes to some extent, and we suggest that the detailed feedback mechanism warrants further investigation from both model simulations and field observations.
Modeling the feedback between aerosol and boundary layer processes: a case study in Beijing, China

Abstract:Rapid development has led to frequent haze in Beijing. With mountains and sea surrounding Beijing, the pollution is found to be influenced by the mountain-plain breeze and sea-land breeze in complex ways. Meanwhile, the presence of aerosols may affect the surface energy balance and impact these boundary layer (BL) processes. The effects of BL processes on aerosol pollution and the feedback between aerosol and BL processes are not yet clearly understood. Thus, the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) is used to investigate the possible effects and feedbacks during a haze episode on 23 September 2011. Influenced by the onshore prevailing wind, sea-breeze, and upslope breeze, about 45 % of surface particulate matter (PM)2.5 in Beijing are found to be contributed by its neighbor cities through regional transport. In the afternoon, the development of upslope breeze suppresses the growth of BL in Beijing by imposing a relatively low thermal stable layer above the BL, which exacerbates the pollution. Two kinds of feedback during the daytime are revealed as follows: (1) as the aerosols absorb and scatter the solar radiation, the surface net radiation and sensible heat flux are decreased, while BL temperature is increased, resulting in a more stable and shallower BL, which leads to a higher surface PM2.5 concentration in the morning and (2) in the afternoon, as the presence of aerosols increases the BL temperature over plains, the upslope breeze is weakened, and the boundary layer height (BLH) over Beijing is heightened, resulting in the decrease of the surface PM2.5 concentration there.

Abstract:Aerosol particles can strongly affect both air quality and the radiation budget of the atmosphere. Above Beijing, the capital city of China, large amounts of aerosols within the atmospheric column have caused the deterioration of local air quality and have influenced radiative forcings at both the top and the bottom of the atmosphere (BOA and TOA). Observations of aerosol radiative forcing and its efficiency have been made using two sun-photometers in urban Beijing between 2013 and 2015, and have been analyzed alongside two air quality monitoring stations' data by dividing air quality conditions into unpolluted, moderately polluted, and heavily polluted days. Daily average PM2.5 concentrations varied greatly in urban Beijing (5.5-485.0 mu g/m(3)) and more than one-third of the analyzed period is classified as being polluted according to the national ambient air quality standards of China. The heavily polluted days had the largest bottom of atmosphere (BOA) and top of atmosphere (TOA) radiative forcings, but the smallest radiative forcing efficiencies, while the unpolluted days showed the opposite characteristics. On heavily polluted days, the averaged BOA aerosol radiative forcing occasionally exceeded -150 W/m(2), which represents a value about three-times greater than that for unpolluted days. BOA aerosol radiative forcing was around two-to-three times as large as TOA aerosol radiative forcing under various air quality conditions, although both were mostly negative, suggesting that aerosols had different magnitudes of cooling effects at both the surface and the top of the atmosphere. Unpolluted days had the largest average values of aerosol radiative forcing efficiencies at BOA (and TOA) levels, which exceeded -190 W/m(2) (-70 W/m(2)), compared with the lowest average values in heavily polluted days of around -120 W/m(2) (-55 W/m(2)). These results suggest that the high concentrations of particulate matter pollution in the urban Beijing area had a strong cooling effect at both BOA and TOA levels.

Abstract:Regional transport of air pollutants is a crucial factor influencing atmospheric environment, and aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) feedback to atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) structure and ambient air pollution is yet to be comprehensively understood over the receptor region of regional transport. By simulating meteorology and air pollutants during a heavy PM 2.5 pollution event with WRF-Chem model, we quantitatively investigated the ARF and ABL interaction for PM 2.5 pollution over the Twain-Hu Basin (THB), a key receptor region of regional transport over central China. Driven by northerly winds, PM 2.5 was transported from upstream north China to downstream THB accompanied by high PM 2.5 levels in the free troposphere. The ARF exacerbated local PM 2.5 accumulation by up to 20 μg m −3 and inhibited the impact of regional transport on PM 2.5 levels in the ABL with reducing near-surface PM 2.5 concentrations of 5 μg m −3 over the THB. The ARF-intensified air temperature inversion at the top of ABL was unfavorable for the transported air pollutants crossing the ABL top to the near-surface layer, thus weakening the impact of regional PM 2.5 transport on air quality in the receptor region. Meanwhile, the ARF of transported PM 2.5 induced updrafts in the free troposphere, promoting vertical mixing of air pollutants with positive feedback on increasing secondary PM 2.5 concentrations in the free troposphere. The ARF induced more and less secondary PM 2.5 formations respectively in the free troposphere and the near-surface layer during the regional transport period of air pollution. These results enhance our comprehension of aerosol-meteorology feedback in regional changes of atmospheric environment with inverse effects of ARF on PM 2.5 pollution of local accumulation and regional transport.

Abstract:Regional PM 2.5 transport is a crucial factor affecting air quality, and the meteorological mechanism in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) has not been fully understood over the receptor region in the regional transport of air pollutants. Based on the intensive vertical measurements of air pollutants and meteorology in the ABL during a transport-induced heavy air pollution event in Xiangyang, an urban site over a receptor region in central China, we investigated the meteorological mechanism in vertical PM 2.5 changes in the ABL for heavy air pollution over the receptor region. Driven by northerly winds, regional PM 2.5 transport was built from upstream northern China to downstream central China, where the observed ABL structures were unstable throughout the air pollution event. We assessed the ABL structures with meteorological and PM 2.5 profiles at growth, maintenance, and dissipation stages, and elucidated the mechanism of regional PM 2.5 transport inducing air pollution over the receptor region with the contribution of thermal and mechanical factors. The regional PM 2.5 transport was concentrated in the upper ABL over the downwind receptor region with high PM 2.5 concentrations at altitudes of 600–800 m, where the transported PM 2.5 peaks were downwards mixed by vertical wind shear, forming the vertical PM 2.5 transport from the upper ABL to near-surface in the growth stage; the weakened winds and less unstable structures in the ABL favored the sustained pollution with slight vertical PM 2.5 changes in the maintenance stage, which was dominated by thermal factors with 87 % contribution; the removal of PM 2.5 was triggered by increasing winds from the upper ABL, activating the dissipation of heavy PM 2.5 pollution with the mechanical effect accounting for 60 % in the dissipation stage. These findings could improve our understanding of ABL's influence on air pollution over the receptor region with implications for the regional transport of air pollutants in environmental changes.

Abstract:Severe air pollution episodes have been frequent in China during the recent years. While high emissions are the primary reason for increasing pollutant concentrations, the ultimate cause for the most severe pollution episodes has remained unclear. Here we show that a high concentration of particulate matter (PM) will enhance the stability of an urban boundary layer, which in turn decreases the boundary layer height and consequently cause further increases in PM concentrations. We estimate the strength of this positive feedback mechanism by combining a new theoretical framework with ambient observations. We show that the feedback remains moderate at fine PM concentrations lower than about 200 μg m−3, but that it becomes increasingly effective at higher PM loadings resulting from the combined effect of high surface PM emissions and massive secondary PM production within the boundary layer. Our analysis explains why air pollution episodes are particularly serious and severe in megacities and during the days when synoptic weather conditions stay constant.

Abstract:Understanding the vertical distribution of atmospheric aerosols is crucial to elucidating their spatial distribution and the formation of extreme air pollution events. Based on multisource data from specialized aircraft, lidar, and conventional surface observations with meteorological reanalysis, the vertical distribution of atmospheric aerosols and related changes during two air pollution cases in Beijing in the spring of 2012 were analyzed and compared. The results indicated that temperature inversion occurred in the atmospheric boundary layer in both cases. Aerosols accumulated considerably within the inversion layer, and the vertical distribution of the aerosol concentration was consistent with the relative humidity. However, the vertical distributions of the pollution layer thickness, aerosol concentration, and particle size differed significantly under different temperature-inversion conditions, primarily because of differences in the air pollution-diffusing abilities, which depended on vertical changes in the atmospheric thermodynamic structure. When radiation inversion occurred, the diurnal variation in the vertical distributions of aerosol and relative humidity was notable: The air pollution layer was thin in the morning, but the aerosol and particle size became more vertically uniform during the day, and the aerosol concentration and relative humidity near the surface decreased sharply because of enhanced pollutant vertical diffusion, which was influenced by newly developed unstable thermodynamic stratification. During the temperature inversion resulting from coupled subsidence and advection, the inversion layer was higher and more stable, allowing it to inhibit the vertical diffusion of pollutants, which subsequently caused long-lasting and thick pollution with a higher aerosol concentration and relative humidity at lower levels alongside a relatively unchanging vertical distribution of particle sizes. Moreover, in the daytime, as the southerly airflow strengthened below the inversion layer and the mixed-layer height increased, the pollution and wet layers thickened, and the aerosol concentration increased rapidly because of pollutant transport to the Beijing region.

Abstract:To investigate the transport and formation mechanism of pollution in Beijing, this study explored the vertical profiles of aerosol properties using aircraft measurement during a regional transport (RT) pollution event from 10th to 12th December 2016. The aerosol chemical composition and size distribution were characterized. Different vertical structures exhibited during three periods (defined as before RT, during RT, and after RT) for this pollution event. Before RT, PM2.5 and black carbon (BC) mass loading were at low level in the mixing layer (ML) when the clean northerly air mass dominated. During RT, an elevated aerosol layer, in which BC and PM2.5 mass concentrations were about 1.5 times higher than that at the ground level, was found in the upper ML (at 400–900 m) over Beijing. This elevated aerosol layer was advected by the prevailing southwesterly air mass which transported the pollutants from the intensively polluted southwestern region over Beijing. These aerosols through RT featured with pronounced secondary compositions and large coatings on BC particles. After RT, the pollutants were significantly diluted by the prevailing NW air mass, whereas the aerosol concentration almost maintained in the near surface, leading to notable vertical gradient. The continued surface pollution may result from the low wind speed and secondary aerosol formation in the next day. This study suggests that only the ground observation could not fully explain the pollution event, but the variation of vertical structure of aerosol properties should be considered to elucidate the formation mechanism of pollution over Beijing.
Impact of Aerosol–meteorology Interactions on Fine Particle Pollution During China’s Severe Haze Episode in January 2013

Abstract:In January 2013, a severe regional haze occurred over the North China Plain. An online-coupled meteorology-chemistry model was employed to simulate the impacts of aerosol–meteorology interactions on fine particles (PM2.5) pollution during this haze episode. The response of PM2.5 to meteorology change constituted a feedback loop whereby planetary boundary layer (PBL) dynamics amplified the initial perturbation of PM2.5. High PM2.5 concentrations caused a decrease of surface solar radiation. The maximal decrease in daily average solar radiation reached 53% in Beijing, thereby leading to a more stable PBL. The peak PBL height in Beijing decreased from 690 m to 590 m when the aerosol extinction was considered. Enhanced PBL stability suppressed the dispersion of air pollutants, and resulted in higher PM2.5 concentrations. The maximal increase of PM2.5 concentrations reached 140 μg m−3 in Beijing. During most PM2.5 episodes, primary and secondary particles increased simultaneously. These results imply that the aerosol–radiation interactions played an important role in the haze episode in January 2013.
Aerosol–radiation feedback deteriorates the wintertime haze in the North China Plain

Abstract:Abstract. Atmospheric aerosols scatter or absorb a fraction of the incoming solar radiation to cool or warm the atmosphere, decreasing surface temperature and altering atmospheric stability to further affect the dispersion of air pollutants in the planetary boundary layer (PBL). In the present study, simulations during a persistent and heavy haze pollution episode from 5 December 2015 to 4 January 2016 in the North China Plain (NCP) were performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) to comprehensively quantify contributions of aerosol shortwave radiative feedback (ARF) to near-surface (around 15 m above the ground surface) PM2.5 mass concentrations. The WRF-Chem model generally performs well in simulating the temporal variations and spatial distributions of air pollutants concentrations compared to observations at ambient monitoring sites in the NCP, and the simulated diurnal variations of aerosol species are also consistent with the measurements in Beijing. Additionally, the model simulates the aerosol radiative properties, the downward shortwave flux, and the PBL height against observations in the NCP well. During the episode, ARF deteriorates the haze pollution, increasing the near-surface PM2.5 concentrations in the NCP by 10.2 μg m−3 or with a contribution of 7.8 % on average. Sensitivity studies have revealed that high loadings of PM2.5 attenuate the incoming solar radiation reaching the surface to cool the low-level atmosphere, suppressing the development of the PBL, decreasing the surface wind speed, further hindering the PM2.5 dispersion, and consequently exacerbating the haze pollution in the NCP. Furthermore, when the near-surface PM2.5 mass concentration increases from around 50 to several hundred μg m−3, ARF contributes to the near-surface PM2.5 by more than 20 % during daytime in the NCP, substantially aggravating the heavy haze formation. However, when the near-surface PM2.5 concentration is less than around 50 μg m−3, ARF generally reduces the near-surface PM2.5 concentration due to the consequent perturbation of atmospheric dynamic fields.

Abstract:Abstract. We examined the impacts of aerosol–radiation interactions, including the effects of aerosol–photolysis interaction (API) and aerosol–radiation feedback (ARF), on surface-layer ozone (O3) concentrations during four multi-pollutant air pollution episodes characterized by high O3 and PM2.5 levels during 28 July to 3 August 2014 (Episode1), 8–13 July 2015 (Episode2), 5–11 June 2016 (Episode3), and 28 June to 3 July 2017 (Episode4) in North China, by using the Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model embedded with an integrated process analysis scheme. Our results show that API and ARF reduced the daytime shortwave radiative fluxes at the surface by 92.4–102.9 W m−2 and increased daytime shortwave radiative fluxes in the atmosphere by 72.8–85.2 W m−2, as the values were averaged over the complex air pollution areas (CAPAs) in each of the four episodes. As a result, the stabilized atmosphere decreased the daytime planetary boundary layer height and 10 m wind speed by 129.0–249.0 m and 0.05–0.15 m s−1, respectively, in CAPAs in the four episodes. Aerosols were simulated to reduce the daytime near-surface photolysis rates of J[NO2] and J[O1D] by 1.8 × 10−3–2.0 × 10−3 and 5.7 × 10−6–6.4 × 10−6 s−1, respectively, in CAPAs in the four episodes. All of the four episodes show the same conclusion, which is that the reduction in O3 by API is larger than that by ARF. API (ARF) was simulated to change daytime surface-layer O3 concentrations by −8.5 ppb (parts per billion; −2.9 ppb), −10.3 ppb (−1.0 ppb), −9.1 ppb (−0.9 ppb), and −11.4 ppb (+0.7 ppb) in CAPAs of the four episodes, respectively. Process analysis indicated that the weakened O3 chemical production made the greatest contribution to API effect, while the reduced vertical mixing was the key process for ARF effect. Our conclusions suggest that future PM2.5 reductions may lead to O3 increases due to the weakened aerosol–radiation interactions, which should be considered in air quality planning.

Thus, this study systematically investigated these linkages by combining aerosol measurements, surface meteorological observations, radiosonde data, reanalysis, long-term three-dimensional meteorological simulations, and idealized meteorology-chemistry coupled simulations. Based on the validated long-term simulation results, the boundary layer height (BLH) in Beijing during two winters from 2013 to 2015 was calculated and compared with PM2.5 measurements. A significant anti-correlation was found between the daily BLH and PM2.5 concentration in Beijing, indicating the importance of the PBL structure on the variations in the aerosol pollution levels. Those days with low BLHs are often accompanied by a strong elevated thermal inversion layer. Based on the daily 900-hPa geopotential height fields, seven synoptic patterns were identified using an objective approach, in which two types were found to be associated with heavy PM2.5 pollution in Beijing. One pattern was characterized by weak northwesterly prevailing winds and a strong elevated thermal inversion layer over Beijing, and the local emissions of aerosols played a decisive role in the formation of heavy pollution. The other pattern was associated with southerly prevailing winds, which could transport the pollutants emitted from southern cities to Beijing. According to the meteorology-chemistry coupled simulations, southerly regional transportation can contribute approximately 56% of the PM2.5 in Beijing. The results of this study have important implications for understanding the crucial roles that multiscale meteorological factors play in modulating the aerosol pollution in Beijing during the winter.
Aerosol-radiation feedback deteriorates the wintertime haze in North China Plain

Abstract:Abstract. Atmospheric aerosols or fine particulate matters (PM2.5) scatter or absorb a fraction of the incoming solar radiation to cool or warm the atmosphere, decreasing surface temperature and altering atmospheric stability to further affect the dispersion of air pollutants in the planetary boundary layer (PBL). In the present study, simulations during a persistent and heavy haze pollution episode from 05 December 2015 to 04 January 2016 in the North China Plain (NCP) were performed using the WRF-CHEM model to comprehensively quantify contributions of the aerosol shortwave radiative feedback (ARF) to near-surface PM2.5 mass concentrations. The WRF-CHEM model generally performs well in simulating the temporal variations and spatial distributions of air pollutants concentrations compared to observations at ambient monitoring sites in NCP, and the simulated diurnal variations of aerosol species are also consistent with the measurements in Beijing. Additionally, the model simulates well the aerosol radiative properties, the downward shortwave flux, and the PBL height against observations in NCP during the episode. During the episode, the ARF deteriorates the haze pollution, increasing the near-surface PM2.5 concentration in NCP by 10.2 μg m−3 or with a contribution of 7.8 %. Sensitivity studies have revealed that high loadings of PM2.5 during the episode attenuate the incoming solar radiation down to the surface, cooling the temperature of the low-level atmosphere to suppress development of PBL and decrease the surface wind speed, further enhancing the relative humidity and hindering the PM2.5 dispersion and consequently exacerbating the haze pollution in NCP. The ensemble analysis indicates that when the near-surface PM2.5 mass concentration increases from around 50 to several hundred μg m−3, the ARF contributes to the near-surface PM2.5 by more than 20 % during daytime in NCP, substantially aggravating the heavy haze formation. However, when the near-surface PM2.5 concentration is less than around 50 μg m−3, the ARF generally reduces the near-surface PM2.5 concentration due to the consequent perturbation of atmospheric dynamic fields.
Intensification of aerosol pollution associated with its feedback with surface solar radiation and winds in Beijing

Abstract:Beijing has been experiencing serious air pollution in recent years, resulting in serious impacts on the local environment and climate and on human health. In addition to individual pollution sources and weather systems, feedback between aerosols and downwelling solar radiation (DSR) and between aerosols and winds also contribute to heavy aerosol pollution. By using atmospheric visibility (VIS) to represent the relative amount of aerosol pollution during a 5 week observation around the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) period (22 October to 25 November 2014) over a site in south Beijing, China, we show clear positive relationships between DSR and VIS and between winds and VIS. The sensitivities of daily DSR and surface winds to VIS are approximately 15.42 W/m(2)/km and 0.068 m/s/km, respectively. The strengthening contributions to atmospheric visibility by surface DSR-VIS interactions and between surface wind-aerosol interactions are estimated at approximately 15% and 12%, respectively, in south Beijing around the APEC period.
Rapid Transition in Winter Aerosol Composition in Beijing from 2014 to 2017: Response to Clean Air Actions

Abstract:The clean air actions implemented by the Chinese government in 2013 have led to significantly improved air quality in Beijing. In this work, we combined the in situ measurements of the chemical components of submicron particles (PM1) in Beijing during the winters of 2014 and 2017 and a regional chemical transport model to investigate the impact of clean air actions on aerosol chemistry and quantify the relative contributions of anthropogenic emissions, meteorological conditions, and regional transport to the changes in aerosol chemical composition from 2014 to 2017. We found that the average PM1 concentration in winter in Beijing decreased by 49.5 % from 2014 to 2017 (from 66.2 to 33.4 µg m−3). Sulfate exhibited a much larger decline than nitrate and ammonium, which led to a rapid transition from sulfate-driven to nitrate-driven aerosol pollution during the wintertime. Organic aerosol (OA), especially coal combustion OA, and black carbon also showed large decreasing rates, indicating the effective emission control of coal combustion and biomass burning. The decreased sulfate contribution and increased nitrate fraction were highly consistent with the much faster emission reductions in sulfur dioxide (SO2) due to phasing out coal in Beijing compared to reduction in nitrogen oxides emissions estimated by bottom-up inventory. The chemical transport model simulations with these emission estimates reproduced the relative changes in aerosol composition and suggested that the reduced emissions in Beijing and its surrounding regions played a dominant role. The variations in meteorological conditions and regional transport contributed much less to the changes in aerosol concentration and its chemical composition during 2014–2017 compared to the decreasing emissions. Finally, we speculated that changes in precursor emissions possibly altered the aerosol formation mechanisms based on ambient observations. The observed explosive growth of sulfate at a relative humidity (RH) greater than 50 % in 2014 was delayed to a higher RH of 70 % in 2017, which was likely caused by the suppressed sulfate formation through heterogeneous reactions due to the decrease in SO2 emissions. Thermodynamic simulations showed that the decreased sulfate and nitrate concentrations have lowered the aerosol water content, particle acidity, and ammonium particle fraction. The results in this study demonstrate the response of aerosol chemistry to the stringent clean air actions and identify that the anthropogenic emission reductions are a major driver, which could help to further guide air pollution control strategies in China.

Abstract:The aerosol microphysical, optical and radiative properties of the whole column and upper planetary boundary layer (PBL) were investigated during 2013 to 2018 based on long-term sun-photometer observations at a surface site (~106 m a.s.l.) and a mountainous site (~1225 m a.s.l.) in Beijing. Raman-Mie lidar data combined with radiosonde data were used to explore the aerosol radiative effects to PBL during dust and haze episodes. The results showed size distribution exhibited mostly bimodal pattern for the whole column and the upper PBL throughout the year, except in July for the upper PBL, when a trimodal distribution occurred due to the coagulation and hygroscopic growth of fine particles. The seasonal mean values of aerosol optical depth at 440 nm for the upper PBL were 0.31 ± 0.34, 0.30 ± 0.37, 0.17 ± 0.30 and 0.14 ± 0.09 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. The single-scattering albedo at 440 nm of the upper PBL varied oppositely to that of the whole column, with the monthly mean value between 0.91 and 0.96, indicating weakly to slightly strong absorptive ability at visible spectrum. The monthly mean direct aerosol radiative forcing at the Earth's surface and the top of the atmosphere varied from -40 ± 7 to -105 ± 25 and from -18 ± 4 to -49 ± 17 W m-2, respectively, and the maximum atmospheric heating was found in summer (~66 ± 12 W m-2). From a radiative point of view, during dust episode, the presence of mineral dust heated the lower atmosphere, thus promoting vertical turbulence, causing more air pollutants being transported to the upper air by the increasing PBLH. In contrast, during haze episode, a large quantity of absorbing aerosols (such as black carbon) had a cooling effect on the surface and a heating effect on the upper atmosphere, which favored the stabilization of PBL and occurrence of inversion layer, contributing to the depression of the PBLH.

Abstract:A heavy air pollution episode in Beijing in October 2015 was analyzed through vertical observation, ground-based observation, monitoring data of chemical components of PM2.5 and back-trajectories of air mass. The results showed that aerosol extinction coefficient increased significantly during the episode, indicating that air pollutants accumulated within 600m height from ground. Comparing with normal days, wind speed was weaker, relative humidity was higher, surface pressure was lower and boundary layer height was lower during the episode. The variation and peak appearance were consistent among different monitoring sites, and NO3-concentration was higher than other components of PM2.5 in most time. In addition, the surrounding region of North China Plain affected by heavy pollution was relatively small, while PM2.5 accumulation in Beijing and its nearby region was more prominent. Multi-observations and correlation analysis between PM2.5 and meteorological factors and chemical compositions showed that this episode was affected by regional transport to some extent, including straw burning. However, the accumulation and chemical reaction of local NO2 emission under unfavorable meteorological conditions and extreme space compression in vertical direction was the main cause.
