Abstract:Malignant melanoma, not belongs to a common type of skin cancers but most serious because of its growth—affecting large number of people worldwide. Recent studies proclaimed that risk factors can be substantially reduced by making it almost treatable, if detected at its early stages. This timely detection and classification demand an automated system, though procedure is quite complex. In this article, a novel strategy is adopted, which not only diagnoses the skin cancer but also assigns a proper class label. The proposed technique is principally built on saliency valuation and the selection of most discriminant deep features selection. The lesion contrast is being enhanced using proposed Gaussian method, followed by color space transformation from RGB to HSV. The new color space facilitates the saliency map construction process, utilizing inner and outer disjoint windows, by making the foreground and background maximally differentiable. From the segmented images, deep features are extracted by utilizing inception CNN model on two basic output layers. These extracted set of features are later fused using proposed decision-controlled parallel fusion method, prior to feature selection using proposed window distance-controlled entropy features selection method. The most discriminant features are later subjected to classification step. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods, three freely available datasets are utilized such as PH2, ISBI 2016, and ISBI 2017 with achieve accuracy is 97.74%, 96.1%, and 97%, respectively. Simulation results clearly reveal the improved performance of proposed method on all three datasets compared to existing methods.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the most dangerous types of cancer due to its immediate appearance and the possibility of rapid spread. It arises from uncontrollably growing cells, rapidly dividing cells in one area of the body, invading other bodily tissues, and spreading throughout the body. Early detection helps prevent cancer progress from reaching critical levels, reducing the risk of complications and the need for more aggressive treatment options. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) revolutionize skin cancer diagnosis by extracting intricate features from images, enabling an accurate classification of lesions. Their role extends to early detection, providing a powerful tool for dermatologists to identify abnormalities in their nascent stages, ultimately improving patient outcomes. This study proposes a novel deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) approach to classifying skin cancer lesions. The proposed DCNN model is evaluated using two unbalanced datasets, namely HAM10000 and ISIC-2019. The DCNN model is compared with other transfer learning models, including VGG16, VGG19, DenseNet121, DenseNet201, and MobileNetV2. Its performance is assessed using four widely used evaluation metrics: accuracy, recall, precision, F1-score, specificity, and AUC. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DCNN model outperforms other deep learning (DL) models that utilized these datasets. The proposed DCNN model achieved the highest accuracy with the HAM10000 and ISIC-2019 datasets, reaching and , respectively. These experimental results show how competitive and successful the DCNN model is in overcoming the problems caused by class imbalance and raising skin cancer classification accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed model demonstrates superior performance, particularly excelling in terms of accuracy, compared to other recent studies that utilize the same datasets, which highlights the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed DCNN.

Abstract:Deep learning utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) stands out among the state-of-the-art procedures in PC-supported medical findings. The method proposed in this paper consists of two key stages. In the first stage, the proposed deep sequential CNN model preprocesses images to isolate regions of interest from skin lesions and extracts features, capturing the relevant patterns and detecting multiple lesions. The second stage incorporates a web tool to increase the visualization of the model by promising patient health diagnoses. The proposed model was thoroughly trained, validated, and tested utilizing a database related to the HAM 10,000 dataset. The model accomplished an accuracy of 96.25% in classifying skin lesions, exhibiting significant areas of strength. The results achieved with the proposed model validated by evaluation methods and user feedback indicate substantial improvement over the current state-of-the-art methods for skin lesion classification (malignant/benign). In comparison to other models, sequential CNN surpasses CNN transfer learning (87.9%), VGG 19 (86%), ResNet-50 + VGG-16 (94.14%), Inception v3 (90%), Vision Transformers (RGB images) (92.14%), and the Entropy-NDOELM method (95.7%). The findings demonstrate the potential of deep learning, convolutional neural networks, and sequential CNN in disease detection and classification, eventually revolutionizing melanoma detection and, thus, upgrading patient consideration.

Abstract:Skin cancer has a high fatality rate, especially in Western countries. Early detection of skin cancer prolongs human life and is helpful to cure disease. Dermoscopy inspection is a frequently utilized noninvasive method to diagnose skin cancer. Visual inspection of dermoscopy images takes more inspection time, and the decision is based on the individual perception of dermatologists. The existing methods for skin cancer classification utilize only spatial information. However, the spectral domains of information are missing to classify skin lesions. Therefore, the performance of the existing models is moderate. To improve the performance of skin cancer classification, this work proposed novel hand-crafted features formulated using image-, spectrogram-, and cepstrum-domain features. The developed hand-crafted features use spatial as well as spectral information. Furthermore, the developed hand-crafted features are given as input to a newly developed 1-D multiheaded convolutional neural network (CNN) for the classification of skin lesions, using the challenging HAM10000 and Dermnet datasets. The performance of the proposed network is compared with the other existing state-of-the-art methods on the same dataset. From the experimental analysis, the proposed network achieved an accuracy of 89.71% on the HAM10000 dataset and an accuracy of 88.57% on the Dermnet dataset. The proposed method may be used to enhance the performance of clinical diagnosis measurement.

Abstract:As an analytic tool in medicine, deep learning has gained great attention and opened new ways for disease diagnosis. Recent studies validate the effectiveness of deep learning algorithms for binary classification of skin lesions (i.e., melanomas and nevi classes) with dermoscopic images. Nonetheless, those binary classification methods cannot be applied to the general clinical situation of skin cancer screening in which multi-class classification must be taken into account. The main objective of this research is to develop, implement, and calibrate an advanced deep learning model in the context of automated multi-class classification of skin lesions. The proposed Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) model is carefully designed with several layers, and multiple filter sizes, but fewer filters and parameters to improve efficacy and performance. Dermoscopic images are acquired from the International Skin Imaging Collaboration databases (ISIC-17, ISIC-18, and ISIC-19) for experiments. The experimental results of the proposed DCNN approach are presented in terms of precision, sensitivity, specificity, and other metrics. Specifically, it attains 94 % precision, 93 % sensitivity, and 91 % specificity in ISIC-17. It is demonstrated by the experimental results that this proposed DCNN approach outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms, exhibiting 0.964 area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) in ISIC-17 for the classification of skin lesions and can be used to assist dermatologists in classifying skin lesions. As a result, this proposed approach provides a novel and feasible way for automating and expediting the skin lesion classification task as well as saving effort, time, and human life.

Abstract:Diagnosis at an early stage is clinically important for the cure of skin cancer. However, since some skin cancers have similar intuitive characteristics, and dermatologists rely on subjective experience to distinguish skin cancer types, the accuracy is often suboptimal. Recently, the introduction of computer methods in the medical field has better assisted physicians to improve the recognition rate but some challenges still exist. In the face of massive dermoscopic image data, residual network (ResNet) is more suitable for learning feature relationships inside big data because of its deeper network depth. Aiming at the deficiency of ResNet, this paper proposes a multi-region feature extraction and raising dimension matching method, which further improves the utilization rate of medical image features. This method firstly extracted rich and diverse features from multiple regions of the feature map, avoiding the deficiency of traditional residual modules repeatedly extracting features in a few fixed regions. Then, the fused features are strengthened by up-dimensioning the branch path information and stacking it with the main path, which solves the problem that the information of two paths is not ideal after fusion due to different dimensionality. The proposed method is experimented on the International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) Archive dataset, which contains more than 40,000 images. The results of this work on this dataset and other datasets are evaluated to be improved over networks containing traditional residual modules and some popular networks.

Abstract:One of the deadliest forms of skin cancer is malignant melanoma, developed by aberrant melanocyte cell development. Efficient diagnostic procedures are essential due to the rising prevalence of skin illnesses resulting from several variables such as infections, allergies, dietary habits, chemical exposure, genetic sensitivities, and lifestyle changes. An increasing number of Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) prototypes are used for the computerized identification of skin cancer using dermoscopic images. The research aims to develop a detailed classification framework for the multi-class categorization of skin cancer carcinoma at an earlier phase using Hair removal image processing Technique and Ensemble Visual Geometry Group-16 (EVGG-16) based on a Convolution Neural Network. The main idea is to set different initializations to the same VGG-16 model three times and then to Ensemble the results. The Experimental results show that the VGG-16 model receives an average accuracy of 87% and an F1 score of 86%. The proposed Ensemble Visual Geometry Group-16 (EVGG-16) model receives an average accuracy of 88% and an F1-score of 88% without the hair removal image processing technique; the same model receives an average accuracy of 89% and an F1-score of 88% after applying the hair removal image processing technique. The publicly accessible HAM1000 dataset was employed to experiment; it includes processed images belonging to seven classes to evaluate the model's effectiveness. In conclusion, our proposed Ensemble model with Hair removal technique performs better than other cutting-edge deep-learning techniques and skilled dermatologists. Furthermore, this might be a trustworthy real-time teaching resource for medical students in a dermatology program.

Abstract:The seven most common skin diseases are melanocytic nevus, melanoma, benign keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, vascular lesions, and dermatofibroma. Among them, melanoma has been identified as one of the deadliest cancers based on medical studies and research. The current trend in disease detection revolves around the use of machine learning and deep learning models. Regardless of the model used, the crucial aspect is achieving accurate classification for these diseases. With the emergence of powerful convolutional neural networks (CNNs), significant progress has been made in classification of skin cancer lesions in recent years. However, various challenges hinder the development of practical and effective solutions. First, due to the specific nature of skin cancer lesion images, the current deep neural network architectures and training strategies have poor adaptability to medical images. They are also prone to gradient vanishing issues during network iteration, which hinders the construction of high-performance deep learning models that leverage distinctive characteristics of skin lesion images. Second, there exists a discordance between skin lesion images and deep learning network structures. To address these issues, this study introduces a soft attention mechanism to enhance adaptability to skin cancer lesion images and improve the extraction of informative features from medical images. Additionally, a novel multi-scale fusion convolutional neural network model is proposed to overcome the mismatch between deep learning CNN architectures and skin lesion images. This model autonomously extracts appearance features from raw dermatological medical images. Comparisons with other popular techniques demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model, which can achieve an accuracy of 93.9% on HAM10000 dataset. There is ongoing research to overcome the remaining challenges and further enhance the performance of skin cancer classification algorithms.

Abstract:Skin cancer is a serious disease that affects people all over the world. Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer, and early detection can significantly reduce human mortality. In the United States, approximately 97,610 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2023. However, challenges such as lesion irregularities, low-contrast lesions, intraclass color similarity, redundant features, and imbalanced datasets make improved recognition accuracy using computerized techniques extremely difficult. This work presented a new framework for skin lesion recognition using data augmentation, deep learning, and explainable artificial intelligence. In the proposed framework, data augmentation is performed at the initial step to increase the dataset size, and then two pretrained deep learning models are employed. Both models have been fine-tuned and trained using deep transfer learning. Both models (Xception and ShuffleNet) utilize the global average pooling layer for deep feature extraction. The analysis of this step shows that some important information is missing; therefore, we performed the fusion. After the fusion process, the computational time was increased; therefore, we developed an improved Butterfly Optimization Algorithm. Using this algorithm, only the best features are selected and classified using machine learning classifiers. In addition, a GradCAM-based visualization is performed to analyze the important region in the image. Two publicly available datasets-ISIC2018 and HAM10000-have been utilized and obtained improved accuracy of 99.3% and 91.5%, respectively. Comparing the proposed framework accuracy with state-of-the-art methods reveals improved and less computational time.

Abstract:Abstract: Due to the good diversity in the pattern of lesion, classification of skin disease by photographs is tough. Deep networks (CNNs) have always shown promise in a variety of quite ok item categorization for a wide range of applications with significant variability. [6–11]. We illustrate how to categorise skin lesions using just pixels and disease labels as inputs, using a single CNN that was trained end-to-end from pictures. Early detection Malignant and other types of skin carcinoma focal cell carcinoma is crucial and can help prevent the progression of numerous forms of skin cancer. Regardless, there are several variables that reduce the accuracy of detection. In recent years, the usage in especially in the medical uses of image recognition and object recognition has skyrocketed. Based on previous clinical imaging data, we employed Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to detect and categorise cancer groups in this study. Some of our study objectives include developing a CNN model to detect skin cancer with an accuracy of >80%, keeping the false negative rate in the prediction below 10%, achieving a precision of >80%, and visualising our data. The suggested technique outperforms the other options under consideration, according to simulation results. Keywords: CNN, Skin Cancers, Lesions, Fine grained.

Abstract:The most predominant type of cancer is skin cancer, which is a major health issue, with millions of new cases being identified all over the world every year. Due to the variety and intricate nature of skin lesions, early detection, and an appropriate diagnosis are vital for successful and effective treatment. Dermoscopy images offer a non-invasive and economical way of analyzing skin lesions, but successful interpretation requires knowledge and experience. In this work, we build a deep CNN for classifying dermoscopy images into many categories. ISIC Dataset from kaggle contains 2357 dermoscopy images totaling 9 classes. An efficient CNN Deep-Learning architecture that we proposed implements five different hidden layers to achieve 90% accuracy. The model proposed could significantly enhance the skin cancer diagnosis and enhance patient outcomes.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the widespread diseases among existing cancer types. More importantly, the detection of lesions in early diagnosis has tremendously attracted researchers' attention. Thus, artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques have supported the early diagnosis of skin cancer by investigating deep-learning-based convolutional neural networks (CNN). However, the current methods remain challenging in detecting melanoma in dermoscopic images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an ensemble model that uses the vision of both EfficientNetV2S and Swin-Transformer models to detect the early focal zone of skin cancer. Hence, we considerthat the former architecture leads to greater accuracy, while the latter model has the advantage of recognizing dark parts in an image. We have modified the fifth block of the EfficientNetV2S model and have included the Swin-Transformer model. Our experiments demonstrate that the constructed ensemble model has attained a higher level of accuracy over the individual models and has also decreased the losses as compared to traditional strategies. The proposed model achieved an accuracy score of 99.10%, a sensitivity of 99.27%, and a specificity score of 99.80%.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the major types of cancers with an increasing incidence over the past decades. Accurately diagnosing skin lesions to discriminate between benign and malignant skin lesions is crucial to ensure appropriate patient treatment. While there are many computerised methods for skin lesion classification, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been shown to be superior over classical methods. In this work, we propose a fully automatic computerised method for skin lesion classification which employs optimised deep features from a number of well-established CNNs and from different abstraction levels. We use three pre-trained deep models, namely AlexNet, VGG16 and ResNet-18, as deep feature generators. The extracted features then are used to train support vector machine classifiers. In the final stage, the classifier outputs are fused to obtain a classification. Evaluated on the 150 validation images from the ISIC 2017 classification challenge, the proposed method is shown to achieve very good classification performance, yielding an area under receiver operating characteristic curve of 83.83% for melanoma classification and of 97.55% for seborrheic keratosis classification.

Abstract:Skin cancer these days have become quite a common occurrence especially in certain geographic areas such as Oceania. Early detection of such cancer with high accuracy is of utmost importance, and studies have shown that deep learning- based intelligent approaches to address this concern have been fruitful. In this research, we present a novel deep learning- based classifier that has shown promise in classifying this type of cancer on a relevant preprocessed dataset having important features pre-identified through an effective feature extraction method. Skin cancer in modern times has become one of the most ubiquitous types of cancer. Accurate identification of cancerous skin lesions is of vital importance in treating this malady. In this research, we employed a deep learning approach to identify benign and malignant skin lesions. The initial dataset was obtained from Kaggle before several preprocessing steps for hair and background removal, image enhancement, selection of the region of interest (ROI), region-based segmentation, morphological gradient, and feature extraction were performed, resulting in histopathological images data with 20 input features based on geometrical and textural features. A principle component analysis (PCA)-based feature extraction technique was put into action to reduce the dimensionality to 10 input features. Subsequently, we applied our deep learning classifier, SkinNet-16, to detect the cancerous lesion accurately at a very early stage. The highest accuracy was obtained with the Adamax optimizer with a learning rate of 0.006 from the neural network-based model developed in this study. The model also delivered an impressive accuracy of approximately 99.19%.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the most common diseases that can be initially detected by visual observation and further with the help of dermoscopic analysis and other tests. As at an initial stage, visual observation gives the opportunity of utilizing artificial intelligence to intercept the different skin images, so several skin lesion classification methods using deep learning based on convolution neural network (CNN) and annotated skin photos exhibit improved results. In this respect, the paper presents a reliable approach for diagnosing skin cancer utilizing dermoscopy images in order to improve health care professionals’ visual perception and diagnostic abilities to discriminate benign from malignant lesions. The swarm intelligence (SI) algorithms were used for skin lesion region of interest (RoI) segmentation from dermoscopy images, and the speeded-up robust features (SURF) was used for feature extraction of the RoI marked as the best segmentation result obtained using the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA). The skin lesions are classified into two groups using CNN against three data sets, namely, ISIC-2017, ISIC-2018, and PH-2 data sets. The proposed segmentation and classification techniques’ results are assessed in terms of classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F-measure, precision, MCC, dice coefficient, and Jaccard index, with an average classification accuracy of 98.42 percent, precision of 97.73 percent, and MCC of 0.9704 percent. In every performance measure, our suggested strategy exceeds previous work.

Refined Residual Deep Convolutional Network for Skin Lesion Classification

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects humans and is usually diagnosed by initial clinical screening, which is followed by dermoscopic analysis. Automated classification of skin lesions is still a challenging task because of the high visual similarity between melanoma and benign lesions. This paper proposes a new residual deep convolutional neural network (RDCNN) for skin lesions diagnosis. The proposed neural network is trained and tested using six well-known skin cancer datasets, PH2, DermIS and Quest, MED-NODE, ISIC2016, ISIC2017, and ISIC2018. Three different experiments are carried out to measure the performance of the proposed RDCNN. In the first experiment, the proposed RDCNN is trained and tested using the original dataset images without any pre-processing or segmentation. In the second experiment, the proposed RDCNN is tested using segmented images. Finally, the utilized trained model in the second experiment is saved and reused in the third experiment as a pre-trained model. Then, it is trained again using a different dataset. The proposed RDCNN shows significant high performance and outperforms the existing deep convolutional networks.

Abstract:Automatic melanoma detection from dermoscopic skin samples is a very challenging task. However, using a deep learning approach as a machine vision tool can overcome some challenges. This research proposes an automated melanoma classifier based on a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to accurately classify malignant vs. benign melanoma. The structure of the DCNN is carefully designed by organizing many layers that are responsible for extracting low to high-level features of the skin images in a unique fashion. Other vital criteria in the design of DCNN are the selection of multiple filters and their sizes, employing proper deep learning layers, choosing the depth of the network, and optimizing hyperparameters. The primary objective is to propose a lightweight and less complex DCNN than other state-of-the-art methods to classify melanoma skin cancer with high efficiency. For this study, dermoscopic images containing different cancer samples were obtained from the International Skin Imaging Collaboration datastores (ISIC 2016, ISIC2017, and ISIC 2020). We evaluated the model based on accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score. The proposed DCNN classifier achieved accuracies of 81.41%, 88.23%, and 90.42% on the ISIC 2016, 2017, and 2020 datasets, respectively, demonstrating high performance compared with the other state-of-the-art networks. Therefore, this proposed approach could provide a less complex and advanced framework for automating the melanoma diagnostic process and expediting the identification process to save a life.

Abstract:One of the deadliest diseases is skin cancer, especially melanoma. The high resemblance between different skin lesions such as melanoma and nevus in the skin colour images increases the complexity of identification and diagnosis. An efficient automated early detection system for skin cancer detection is essential in order to save human lives, time, and effort. In this article, an automatic skin lesion classification system using a pretrained deep learning network and transfer learning was proposed. Here, diagnosing melanoma in premature stages, a detection system has been designed which contains the following digital image processing techniques. First, dermoscopy images of skin were taken and this is subjected to a preprocessing step for noise removal and postprocessing step for image enhancement. Then the processed image undergoes image segmentation using k-means and modified k-means clustering. Second, using feature extraction technology, Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix, and first order statistics, characteristics are extracted. Features are selected on the basis of Harris Hawks optimization (HHO). Finally, various classifiers are used for predicting the stages and efficiency of the proposed work. Measures of well-known quantities, sensitivity, precision, accuracy, and specificity are used in assessing the efficiency of the suggested method, where higher values were obtained. Compared to the current methods, it is found that the classification rate exceeded the output of the current approaches in the performance of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Melanoma is considered the most serious type of skin cancer. All over the world, the mortality rate is much high for melanoma in contrast with other cancer. There are various computer-aided solutions proposed to correctly identify melanoma cancer. However, the difficult visual appearance of the nevus makes it very difficult to design a reliable Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system for accurate melanoma detection. Existing systems either uses traditional machine learning models and focus on handpicked suitable features or uses deep learning-based methods that use complete images for feature learning. The automatic and most discriminative feature extraction for skin cancer remains an important research problem that can further be used to better deep learning training. Furthermore, the availability of the limited available images also creates a problem for deep learning models. From this line of research, we propose an intelligent Region of Interest (ROI) based system to identify and discriminate melanoma with nevus cancer by using the transfer learning approach. An improved k-mean algorithm is used to extract ROIs from the images. These ROI based approach helps to identify discriminative features as the images containing only melanoma cells are used to train system. We further use a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based transfer learning model with data augmentation for ROI images of DermIS and DermQuest datasets. The proposed system gives 97.9% and 97.4% accuracy for DermIS and DermQuest respectively. The proposed ROI based transfer learning approach outperforms existing methods that use complete images for classification.

Abstract:Medical imaging systems installed in different hospitals and labs generate images in bulk, which could support medics to analyze infections or injuries. Manual inspection becomes difficult when there exist more images, therefore, intelligent systems are usually required for real-time diagnosis. Melanoma is one of the most common and severe forms of skin cancer that begins from the cells beneath the skin. Through dermoscopic images, it is possible to diagnose the infection at the early stages. In this regard, different approaches have been exploited for improved results. In this study, we propose a two-stream deep neural network information fusion framework for multiclass skin cancer classification. The proposed technique follows two streams: initially, a fusion-based contrast enhancement technique is proposed, which feeds enhanced images to the pretrained DenseNet201 architecture. The extracted features are later optimized using a skewness-controlled moth–flame optimization algorithm. In the second stream, deep features from the fine-tuned MobileNetV2 pretrained network are extracted and down-sampled using the proposed feature selection framework. Finally, most discriminant features from both networks are fused using a new parallel multimax coefficient correlation method. A multiclass extreme learning machine classifier is used to classify lesion images. The testing process is initiated on three imbalanced skin data sets—HAM10000, ISBI2018, and ISIC2019. The simulations are performed without performing any data augmentation step in achieving an accuracy of 96.5%, 98%, and 89%, respectively. A fair comparison with the existing techniques reveals the improved performance of our proposed algorithm.
