Abstract:Adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) logic is a proven energy-efficient superconductor technology for various applications. To address the scalability challenges, we investigated AQFP shift registers with the AQFP footprint area reduced by 25% with respect to prior work and with more than 2x denser overall designs obtained by eliminating the previously used free space between the AQFPs. We also investigated AQFP cells with different designs of flux trapping moats in the superconducting ground plane as well as compact AQFP cells that took advantage of the smaller feature sizes available in the new fabrication process, SFQ5ee+, at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. This new process features nine planarized Nb layers with a 0.25 $\mu$m minimum linewidth. The fabricated circuits were tested in a liquid He probe and in a closed-cycle cryocooler using a controlled cooling rate through the superconducting critical temperature. Using multiple thermal cycles, we investigated flux trapping in the dense AQFP shift registers as well as in the registers using the old (sparse) AQFP designs at two levels of the residual magnetic field, about 0.53 $\mu$T and about 1.2 $\mu$T. The sparse designs demonstrated 95% to almost 100% probability of operation after the cooldown and very wide operation margins, although the flux trapping probability was increasing with circuit complexities. The margins were similarly wide in the newer dense designs, but flux trapping probability that rendered the registers nonoperational was significantly, by an order of magnitude, higher in the denser circuits and was also very sensitive to the moats' shape and location. Our findings indicate that AQFP circuits are amendable to increasing the scale of integration and further densification, but a careful moat design and optimization are required to reduce flux trapping effects in the dense AQFP circuits.

Abstract:Adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) logic is an ultra-low-power superconductor logic family. AQFP logic gates are powered and clocked by dedicated clocking schemes using ac excitation currents to implement an energy-efficient switching process, adiabatic switching. We have proposed a low-latency clocking scheme, delay-line clocking, and demonstrated basic AQFP logic gates. In order to test more complex circuits, a serializer/deserializer (SerDes) should be incorporated into the AQFP circuit under test, since the number of input/output (I/O) cables is limited by equipment. Therefore, in the present study we propose and develop a novel SerDes for testing delay-line-clocked AQFP circuits by combining AQFP and rapid single-flux-quantum (RSFQ) logic families, which we refer to as the AQFP/RSFQ hybrid SerDes. The hybrid SerDes comprises RSFQ shift registers to facilitate the data storage during serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversion. Furthermore, all the component circuits in the hybrid SerDes are clocked by the identical excitation current to synchronize the AQFP and RSFQ parts. We fabricate and demonstrate a delay-line-clocked AQFP circuit (8-to-3 encoder, which is the largest delay-line-clocked circuit ever designed) integrated with the hybrid SerDes at 4.2 K up to 4.5 GHz. Our measurement results indicate that the hybrid SerDes enables the testing of delay-line-clocked AQFP circuits with only a few I/O cables and is thus a powerful tool for the development of very large-scale integration AQFP circuits.

Abstract:CMOS circuits are facing the physical limitations of miniaturization and increasing leakage current. We need new circuit technologies that can operate with low power consumption instead of CMOS circuits to support the growing demand for information and communications technology (ICT). Adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) logic is a superconductor logic family and can operate at 5–10 GHz with extremely low switching energy. We use digital simulation models specified in Verilog or SystemVerilog to design large-scale circuits using AQFP logic gates. Previous work on digital modeling used unconventional timing checks and the timing characteristics of the AQFP logic gates were simplified. The intrinsic delays of the AQFP logic gate, such as propagation and reset delay, were not characterized in depth. To design large-scale circuits with GHz operating frequencies, a more in-depth timing characterization and a more accurate timing model with industry-standard timing checks are needed. In this study, we investigate the appropriate timing definitions and new methods to evaluate the timing parameters of the AQFP logic gates for digital simulation. We observe new timing effects in the AQFP and determine how to properly consider them during characterization. We also consider a few approaches on how to realize the timing model and identify a candidate implementation.

Abstract:Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP) superconducting technology exhibits a high energy efficiency among superconducting electronics, however lacks effective design automation tools. In this work, we develop the first, efficient placement and routing framework for AQFP circuits considering the unique features and constraints, using MIT-LL technology as an example. Our proposed placement framework iteratively executes a fixed-order, row-wise placement algorithm, where the row-wise algorithm derives optimal solution with polynomial-time complexity. To address the maximum wirelength constraint issue in AQFP circuits, a whole row of buffers (or even more rows) is inserted. A* routing algorithm is adopted as the backbone algorithm, incorporating dynamic step size and net negotiation process to reduce the computational complexity accounting for AQFP characteristics, improving overall routability. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework.
A Life-Cycle Energy and Inventory Analysis of Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron Circuits

Abstract:The production process of superconductive integrated circuits is complex and consumes significant amounts of resources and energy. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the environmental impact of this emerging technology. An attractive option for the next generation of superconductive technology is Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP) devices. This study is the first to present a comprehensive process-based life-cycle assessment (LCA) and inventory analysis of AQFP integrated circuits. To generate relevant outcomes, we conduct a comparative LCA that included the bulk CMOS technology. The inventory analysis considered the manufacturing, assembly, and use phases of the circuits. To ensure a fair assessment, we choose the 32-bit AQFP RISC-V single-core processor as the reference functional unit and compare its performance with that of a CMOS counterpart. Our findings reveal that the AQFP processor consumes several orders of magnitude less energy during the use phase than its CMOS counterpart. Consequently, the total life cycle energy (which encompasses manufacturing and assembly energies) of AQFP integrated circuits improves at least by two orders of magnitude.

Irredundant Buffer and Splitter Insertion and Scheduling-Based Optimization for AQFP Circuits

Abstract:The adiabatic quantum-flux parametron (AQFP) is a promising energy-efficient superconducting technology. Before technology mapping, additional buffer and splitter cells need to be inserted into AQFP circuits to fulfill two special constraints: (1) Input signals to a logic gate need to arrive at the same time, thus shorter paths need to be delayed with buffers. (2) The output signal of a logic gate has to be actively branched with splitters if it drives multiple fanouts. Buffers and splitters largely increase the area and delay in AQFP circuits. Naïve buffer and splitter insertion and light-weight optimization using retiming techniques have been used in related works, and it is not clear how much space there is for further optimization. In this paper, we develop (a) a linear-time algorithm to insert buffers and splitters irredundantly, and (b) optimization methods by scheduling and by moving groups of gates, called chunks, together. Experimental results show a reduction of up to 39% on buffer and splitter cost. Moreover, as the technology is still developing and assumptions on the physical constraints are not clear yet, we also discuss the impacts of different assumptions with experimental results to motivate future research on AQFP register design.

High-Temperature Superconductor Quantum Flux Parametron for Energy-Efficient Logic

Abstract:As we rapidly advance through the information age, the power consumed by computers, data centers, and networks grows exponentially. This has inspired a race to develop alternative low-power computational technologies. A new adiabatic configuration of a decades-old superconducting digital logic device has darted into the lead called quantum flux parametrons (QFP). QFP operate with dissipation so low that they seemingly violate the laws of thermodynamics. In just a short span of time, they have gone from simple single NOT gates to complex processors containing thousands of gates. They are fabricated from elemental niobium superconductors cooled to just a few degrees above absolute zero. However, their efficiency is so great that for large high-performance computers with several gates, the energy savings are immense. For smaller computational platforms QFPs from high-temperature superconductors (high-Tc) are highly desirable. In this work, we take the first steps towards this goal with the demonstration of a high-T C QFP shift register. Our device is fabricated using focused helium ion beam lithography where the material is modified with an ion beam at the nanoscale to directly pattern these circuits into a high-T C thin film. We validate the correct logical operation at 25 K, over 6 times higher than niobium devices with an estimated bit energy of 0.1 attoJoule at 10 GHz.

A Novel Optimization Algorithm for Buffer and Splitter Minimization in Phase-Skipping Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron Circuits

Abstract:Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP) logic is a promising emerging device technology that promises six orders of magnitude lower power than CMOS. However, AQFP is challenged by operation at only ultra-low temperatures, has high latency and area, and requires a complex clocking scheme. In particular, every logic gate, buffer, and splitter must be clocked and each pair of connected clocked gates requires overlapping alternating current (AC) clock signals. In particular, clocked buffers need to be used to balance re-convergent logic paths, a problem that is exacerbated by every multi-node fanout needing a tree of clocked splitters. To reduce circuit area many works have proposed buffer and splitter insertion optimization algorithms and recent works have demonstrated a phase-skipping clocking scheme that reduces latency and area. This paper proposes the first algorithm to optimize buffer and splitter insertion for circuits that adopt phase-skipping and demonstrate the resulting performance improvements for a suite of AQFP benchmark circuits.

Abstract:Superconducting circuits, like Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP), offer exceptional energy efficiency but face challenges in physical design due to sophisticated spacing and timing constraints. Current design tools often neglect the importance of constraint adherence throughout the entire design flow. In this paper, we propose SuperFlow, a fully-customized RTL-to-GDS design flow tailored for AQFP devices. SuperFlow leverages a synthesis tool based on CMOS technology to transform any input RTL netlist to an AQFP-based netlist. Subsequently, we devise a novel place-and-route procedure that simultaneously considers wirelength, timing, and routability for AQFP circuits. The process culminates in the generation of the AQFP circuit layout, followed by a Design Rule Check (DRC) to identify and rectify any layout violations. Our experimental results demonstrate that SuperFlow achieves 12.8% wirelength improvement on average and 12.1% better timing quality compared with previous state-of-the-art placers for AQFP circuits.

Abstract:Adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) is an ac-biased logic family noted for its extremely low switching energy of around 1.4 zJ per Josephson junction (JJ) at a clock frequency of 5 GHz. Therefore, the AQFP logic family provides a high-speed, ultra-low-energy alternative to CMOS technology. However, quantised flux, such as vortices, trapped in the superconductor film can adversely affect circuit operation. A conventional solution to vortices is the introduction of low potential holes, also known as moats, within the film. Although basic guidelines have been introduced from published circuits, there is currently no standard method for designing and analysing moats for AQFP circuits. The double gate process (DGP) is a double-active-layered niobium fabrication process that allows for more compact circuits. But the effects of quantised flux for AQFP circuits on both active layers are currently unknown. We use 3D parameter extraction software tools to analyse the effect of various moat structures for AQFP logic cells for DGP and improve layout and moat placement designs.

Abstract:The reversible quantum-flux-parametron (RQFP) is a reversible logic gate based on an energy-efficient superconductor logic family, namely, the adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron logic. The RQFP can perform logic operations in a thermodynamically reversible manner (i.e., without energy dissipation) in the quasi-static limit due to its logical and physical reversibility. Hence, it can be used for investigating the fundamental relations between information and thermodynamics from a circuit perspective. In the present study, we propose a reversible flip-flop (RFF) comprising an RQFP and investigate the minimum energy dissipation required for general information processing through numerical simulation using an RFF-based circuit. This circuit includes fundamental information processing (combinational logic, sequential logic, and data erasure) and can, thus, be used as a physical model for such an investigation. The numerical simulation of this circuit shows that both combinational and sequential logic operations can be conducted without energy dissipation in the quasi-static limit and that the amount of erased data determines the minimum energy dissipation. These results indicate that general information processing can be conducted in a thermodynamically reversible manner by using RQFP circuits as long as all data, including garbage outputs, are conserved.

Abstract:The rapid-pace growing demand for high-performance computation and big-data manipulation entails substantial increase in global power consumption, and challenging thermal management. Thus, there is a need in allocating competitive alternatives for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies. Superconducting platforms, such as rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) lack electric resistance and excel in power efficiency and time performance. However, traditional RSFQs require 3D geometry for their Josephson junctions (JJs) imposing a large footprint, and hence preventing device miniaturization and increasing processing time. Here, we demonstrate that RSFQ logic circuits of planar geometry with weak-link bridges are scalable, relatively easy to process and are CMOS-compatible on a Si chip. Universal logic gates, as well as combinational arithmetic circuiting that are based on these devices are demonstrated. The power consumption and processing time of these logic circuits were as low as 0.8 nW and 13 ps, an order of magnitude improvement with respect to the equivalent traditional-RSFQ logic circuits and two orders of magnitude with respect to CMOS. The competitive performance of planar RSFQ logic circuits renders them for promising CMOS substitutes, especially in the supercomputational realm.

Abstract:Exascale computing and its associated applications have required increasing degrees of efficiency. Semiconductor-Transistor-based Circuits (STbCs) have struggled with increasing the GHz frequency while dealing with power dissipation issues. Emerging as an alternative to STbC, single flux quantum (SFQ) logic in the superconducting electrons (SCE) technology promises higher-speed clock frequencies at ultra-low power consumption. However, its quantized pulse-based operation and high environmental requirements, process variations and other SFQ-specific non-idealities are the significant causes of logic error for SFQ circuits. A suitable method of minimizing the impact of the afore-mentioned error sources is to minimize the number of Josephson Junctions (JJs) in the circuits, hence an essential part of the design flow of large SFQ circuits. This paper presents a novel SFQ logic synthesis framework that given a netlist, offers an automated mapping solution including majority (MAJ) logic with the goal of minimizing the number of JJs, while catering to the unique characteristics and requirements of the design. Our experiments confirm that our synthesis framework significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art academic SFQ technology mapper, namely reducing the number of JJs on average by 35.0%.

Abstract:In this research, we unveil an innovative strategy in neuromorphic computing by developing a neuron model tailored for the energy-efficient Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP) logic. This model is particularly aimed at enhancing neural network accelerators. Our design of the AQFP-based neuron operates effectively in both deterministic and non-deterministic modes. In deterministic mode, the design relies on superconducting inductive coupling to activate neurons by comparing the sum of AQFP signal currents against a tunable threshold. For non-deterministic operation, we demonstrate how altering specific circuit parameters can correlate these aggregated currents with the non-deterministic operational range of an AQFP current comparator. We verified its versatility and functionality by fabricating varied circuits and conducting extensive tests, confirming its practical application potential. Our work not only showcases the practical implementation of AQFP in neuromorphic computing but also sets a foundation for future advancements in energy-efficient AI hardware.

Abstract:Quantum Dot Cellular Automata (QCA) and reversible logic have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional CMOS technology, offering several advantages, such as ultra-dense structures and ultra-low-power consumption. Among the crucial components of processors, the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) has witnessed significant advancements in reversible computing, leading to energy-efficient and high-speed computing systems, particularly beneficial for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications. Conventional ALUs, reliant on irreversible logic, encounter energy inefficiencies due to information loss during computations, resulting in increased power consumption. Moreover, they may face limitations in processing speed, impacting real-time processing capabilities, especially for complex DSP tasks involving intensive arithmetic and logic operations. In response to these challenges, a research paper presents a pioneering approach, proposing a novel reversible ALU design using QCA nanotechnology. The proposed design ingeniously incorporates Modified Fredkin (MF) gates, and a coplanar reversible full adder based on the HNG gate, skillfully leveraging the unique features of QCA nanotechnology to optimize the ALU's energy-efficient and high-speed performance for DSP applications. This revolutionary QCA reversible ALU comprises 330 QCA cells arranged in a compact 0.41 μm2 area, skillfully realized through the coplanar clock-zone-based crossover approach. Its core computational elements, the three MF gates, and the innovative coplanar reversible full adder empower the ALU to execute a remarkable array of 20 distinct arithmetic and logic operations, showcasing its versatility in handling diverse DSP tasks. The proposed structure undergoes extensive simulations utilizing QCADesigner version 2.0.3 to confirm its performance. The evaluation results manifest substantial improvements compared to previous designs, boasting a 30% reduction in area occupancy, a 20% decrement in cell count, a 10% reduction in latency, and a 10% decrease in quantum cost compared to the best-known previous structure. These compelling outcomes solidify the potential of the proposed reversible ALU as a transformative advancement in energy-efficient and high-speed computing for DSP applications.

Abstract:Single flux quantum (SFQ) technology has garnered significant attention due to its low switching power and high operational speed. Researchers have been actively pursuing more advanced devices and technologies to further reduce the reliance on inductors, bias, and dynamic power. Recently, innovative magnetic Josephson junction devices have emerged, enhancing the field of superconductor electronics (SCE) logic. This paper introduces a novel cell library design that relies entirely on Josephson junctions (JJs), showing promising potential for eliminating the need for inductors in conventional SFQ cells. This results in a 55% reduction in cell size and an 80% decrease in both static and dynamic power consumption. The proposed library implements a half flux quantum (HFQ) logic, where each pulse duration is half that of a single flux quantum pulse. The paper presents the schematics of the basic cells, emphasizing critical circuit parameters and their margins. Additionally, it examines layout blueprints, showcasing the advantageous area-saving characteristics of the proposed design.

Abstract:Gate-level clocking, typical in traditional approaches to Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) technology, makes the effective synthesis of superconducting circuits a significant engineering hurdle. This paper addresses this challenge by employing the recently introduced alternating SFQ (xSFQ) logic family. xSFQ leverages dual-rail alternating encoding to eliminate the clock dependency from the superconducting gate semantics. This obviates the need for ad hoc modifications to existing synthesis tools and avoids unnecessary circuit resource overheads, marking a significant advancement in superconducting circuit design automation. Our implementation results demonstrate an average reduction of over 80\% in the Josephson junction count for circuits from the ISCAS85, EPFL, and ISCAS89 benchmark suites.

Unleashing the Power of T1-cells in SFQ Arithmetic Circuits

Abstract:Rapid single-flux quantum (RSFQ), a leading cryogenic superconductive electronics (SCE) technology, offers extremely low power dissipation and high speed. However, implementing RSFQ systems at VLSI complexity faces challenges, such as substantial area overhead from gate-level pipelining and path balancing, exacerbated by RSFQ's limited layout density. T1 flip-flop (T1-FF) is an RSFQ logic cell operating as a pulse counter. Using T1-FF the full adder function can be realized with only 40% of the area required by the conventional realization. This cell however imposes complex constraints on input signal timing, complicating its use. Multiphase clocking has been recently proposed to alleviate gate-level pipelining overhead. The fanin signals can be efficiently controlled using multiphase clocking. We present the novel two-stage SFQ technology mapping methodology supporting the T1-FF. Compatible parts of the SFQ network are first replaced by the efficient T1-FFs. Multiphase retiming is next applied to assign clock phases to each logic gate and insert DFFs to satisfy the input timing. Using our flow, the area of the SFQ networks is reduced, on average, by 6% with up to 25% reduction in optimizing the 128-bit adder.

Abstract:Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP) is a superconducting logic with extremely high energy efficiency. By employing the distinct polarity of current to denote logic `0' and `1', AQFP devices serve as excellent carriers for binary neural network (BNN) computations. Although recent research has made initial strides toward developing an AQFP-based BNN accelerator, several critical challenges remain, preventing the design from being a comprehensive solution. In this paper, we propose SupeRBNN, an AQFP-based randomized BNN acceleration framework that leverages software-hardware co-optimization to eventually make the AQFP devices a feasible solution for BNN acceleration. Specifically, we investigate the randomized behavior of the AQFP devices and analyze the impact of crossbar size on current attenuation, subsequently formulating the current amplitude into the values suitable for use in BNN computation. To tackle the accumulation problem and improve overall hardware performance, we propose a stochastic computing-based accumulation module and a clocking scheme adjustment-based circuit optimization method. We validate our SupeRBNN framework across various datasets and network architectures, comparing it with implementations based on different technologies, including CMOS, ReRAM, and superconducting RSFQ/ERSFQ. Experimental results demonstrate that our design achieves an energy efficiency of approximately 7.8x10^4 times higher than that of the ReRAM-based BNN framework while maintaining a similar level of model accuracy. Furthermore, when compared with superconductor-based counterparts, our framework demonstrates at least two orders of magnitude higher energy efficiency.

Q-Pilot: Field Programmable Qubit Array Compilation with Flying Ancillas

Abstract:Neutral atom arrays have become a promising platform for quantum computing, especially the field programmable qubit array (FPQA) endowed with the unique capability of atom movement. This feature allows dynamic alterations in qubit connectivity during runtime, which can reduce the cost of executing long-range gates and improve parallelism. However, this added flexibility introduces new challenges in circuit compilation. Inspired by the placement and routing strategies for FPGAs, we propose to map all data qubits to fixed atoms while utilizing movable atoms to route for 2-qubit gates between data qubits. Coined flying ancillas, these mobile atoms function as ancilla qubits, dynamically generated and recycled during execution. We present Q-Pilot, a scalable compiler for FPQA employing flying ancillas to maximize circuit parallelism. For two important quantum applications, quantum simulation and the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), we devise domain-specific routing strategies. In comparison to alternative technologies such as superconducting devices or fixed atom arrays, Q-Pilot effectively harnesses the flexibility of FPQA, achieving reductions of 1.4x, 27.7x, and 6.3x in circuit depth for 100-qubit random, quantum simulation, and QAOA circuits, respectively.
