Abstract:Gentamicin is considered one of the most typical causes of testicular damage. Oxidative stress is a significant contributor to testicular tissue damage. Zamzam water (alkaline in nature) has an antioxidant effect. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential palliative effect of Zamzam water against gentamicin-induced testicular damage. Thirty Rats were separated into three groups, each with ten rats, as follows: The Control received only normal saline. The gentamicin group received 100 mg/kg/day of gentamicin intraperitoneally for six days from day 15 to the end of the experiment. The gentamicin +Zamzam Water group received a dose of gentamicin 100 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally with Zamzam water as their sole source of drinking from day one to day 21. Hormonal assay in serum, histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural examination of testicular tissue with a molecular study were obtained. Pretreatment with Zamzam water significantly p < 0.001 increased serum levels of testosterone, FSH, and LH, as well as the percentage of sperm motility and progressive motility. It also upregulated SOD, CAT, GPx enzymatic activity, gene expression of Nrf2/HO-1, and immunoexpression of PCNA. While the percentage of dead sperm and abnormal sperm, immunoexpression of NFκB, Caspase 3, inflammatory cytokines TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, and MDA levels significantly( p < 0.001) declined with histological improvement. It was concluded that Zamzam water as alkaline water possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects against gentamicin-induced testicular toxicity in vivo.

Abstract:Gentamicin is an effective aminoglycoside antibiotic against severe infections. In spite of inducing nephrotoxicity and oxidative damage, gentamicin is used clinically due to its wide spectrum of activities against Gram negative bacterial infections. Its nephrotoxicity occurs by selective accumulation in renal proximal convoluting tubules. Its nephrotoxicity involves renal free radical generation and reduction in antioxidant defense mechanisms. A potential therapeutic approach to protect or reverse gentamicin-induced oxidative stressand nephrotoxicity would have more importance for clinical consequences. Therefore, thepresent study was designed to investigate the possible antioxidant protective effects of oxytocin and silymarin against gentamicin-induced renal damage in rats. A total of 40 adult male albino rats were divided into four groups. The first group is the control group that received normal saline (1ml/kg/i.p/day for 8 consecutive days), the second group was treated withgentamicin(80mg/kg/i.p/day for 8 days), the third group was treated with gentamicin (80mg/kg/i.p/day for 8 days) and oxytocin (5 I.U/kg/i.p/day for 8 days) and the fourth group was treated with gentamicin (80mg/kg/i.p/day for 8 days) and salymarin in a dose of (50 mg/kg orally/day for 8 days). Some biochemical and histopathological examinations of kidneys were performed after treatment for evaluation of the oxidative stress and renal nephrotoxicity. Gentamicin treatment significantly increased serum urea and creatinine levels and AST activities. Also gentamicin significantly decreased the total antioxidant capacity and catalase activity in renal tissues. Renal tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) has a non significant increase, while renal reduced glutathione (GSH) wasn't changed. Study of renal morphology showed degenerative changes in the form of cloudy swelling, hydropic degeneration and glomerular necrosis in gentamicin group. Administration of oxytocin and silymarin with gentamicin ameliorated to some degree the biochemical changes and oxidative stress parameters against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. It was concluded that treatments with these antioxidants could have beneficial effects in treatment of gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity.

Abstract:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) is ubiquitously expressed in testicular tissue and plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes. Pioglitazone (PIO) is one of the PPAR-γ agonists, having anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Patients on gentamycin treatment may undergo serious side effects such as testicular damage. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first study to investigate the possible protective anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of PIO on gentamycin-induced testicular damage. Fifty adult male Wistar albino rats included in the study as the control group (CTL) received normal saline; a gentamycin-induced testicular damage group (GM) received gentamycin (100 mg/kg); PIO5, PIO10, PIO20 groups received PIO at a dose of 5, 10, and 20 mg/ kg, respectively, for 21 days, and gentamycin was started at day 15 of the experiment for 6 days. The parameters of spermatozoa and histopathological alterations in the testes were significantly improved in the PIO20 group. Moreover, MDA levels, inflammatory mediators, and apoptotic Bax expression were decreased. The activity of glutathione peroxidase, catalase, total antioxidant capacity, and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 genes expression were increased. It was concluded that PIO20 could protect against gentamycin-induced testicular damage in Wistar rats through its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects.

Abstract:Nephrotoxicity is a serious complication commonly encountered with gentamicin (GTM) treatment. Permeabilization of lysosomes with subsequent cytoplasmic release of GTM and cathepsins is considered a crucial issue in progression of GTM toxicity. This study was designed to evaluate the prospective defensive effect of lysosomal membrane stabilization by imipramine (IMP) against GTM nephrotoxicity in rats. GTM (30 mg/kg/h) was intraperitoneally administered over 4 h daily (120 mg/kg/day) for 7 days. IMP (30 mg/kg/day) was orally administered for 14 days; starting 7 days before and then concurrently with GTM. On 15th day, samples (urine, blood, kidney) were collected to estimate biomarkers of kidney function, lysosomal stability, apoptosis, and inflammation. IMP administration to GTM-treated rats ameliorated the disruption in lysosomal membrane stability induced by GTM. That was evidenced by enhanced renal protein expressions of LAMP2 and PI3K, but reduced cathepsin D cytoplasmic expression in kidney sections. Besides, IMP guarded against apoptosis in GTM-treated rats by down-regulation of the pro-apoptotic (tBid, Bax, cytochrome c) and the effector cleaved caspase-3 expressions, while the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 expression was enhanced. Additionally, the inflammatory cascade p38 MAPK/NF-κB/TNF-α was attenuated in GTM + IMP group along with marked improvement in kidney function biomarkers, compared to GTM group. These findings were supported by the obvious improvement in histological architecture. Furthermore, in vitro enhancement of the antibacterial activity of GTM by IMP confers an additional benefit to their combination. Conclusively, lysosomal membrane stabilization by IMP with subsequent suppression of tBid/cytochrome c/cleaved caspase-3 apoptotic signaling could be a promising protective strategy against GTM nephrotoxicity.
Protective effect of beta-carotene on hepato-nephrotoxicity of gentamicin in male Wistar rats

Abstract:Background Despite causing significant tissue damage at the molecular and cellular levels, partly due to its induction of oxidative stress, it remains of interest in medical applications. Beta-carotene, found in fruits and vegetables, is being studied for its antioxidant properties. This study aimed to explore beta-carotene's protective effects against gentamicin-induced hepatorenal toxicity. Method Thirty male Wistar-rats were divided into five groups. Control group received normal-saline, while the canola group received canola oil (beta-carotene solvent). Gentamicin group received 100 mg/kg gentamicin injections for seven days. Beta-carotene groups were treated with beta-carotene at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg for 10 days, along with gentamicin from the fourth day for 7 days. Serum and tissue hepatorenal function tests were performed at the end of the study. Results Gentamicin resulted in hepatorenal damage. Beta-carotene alongside gentamicin significantly decreased serum SGOT (152.3 ± 12.7 vs. 264.8 ± 9.3 IU/L), SGPT (65.7 ± 2.5 vs. 98.0 ± 4.8 IU/L), creatinine (0.74 ± 0.0 vs. 1.5 ± 0.1 mg/dL), and urea (78.1 ± 10.7 vs. 207.4 ± 23.6 mg/dL) in comparison to gentamicin alone (p < 0.05). Beta-carotene caused a significant decrease in vacuolar degeneration, interstitial nephritis and infiltration of lymphocytes in kidney, and cell necrosis, vacuolar degeneration and infiltration of leukocytes compared to the gentamicin group; additionally, beta-carotene prevented increase in oxidative stress in gentamicin group. Conclusion Administration of gentamicin alone resulted in hepatorenal toxicity, whereas beta-carotene could prevent gentamicin-induced oxidative stress imbalance and tissue damage. Therefore, beta-carotene could serve as an adjunctive therapy to mitigate hepatorenal toxicity in patients undergoing gentamicin treatment.

Pimpinella anisum L. ethanolic extract ameliorates the gentamicin- induced nephrotoxicity in rats

Abstract:Aim: Gentamicin (GM) is one of the commonest causes of drug-induced nephrotoxicity. Moreover, oxidative stress plays an important role in gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. The current study aimed to explore the antioxidant and protective effects of Pimpinella anisum (P. anisum) on the alleviation of GM-induced damage. Methods: Forty male wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, sham that was administrated normal saline orally and intraperitoneally (i.p.), GM that received 100 mg/kg bw/day i.p., GM and ethanolic extract of P. anisum that was administrated at an oral dose of 300 mg/kg bw/day for 8 days. Creatinine, Na+ , K+ and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were measured. The levels of ferric-reducing-antioxidant-power (FRAP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured to evaluate the oxidative stress induced by GM. Kidney tissues were stained to determine the degree of tissue damage. Results: The plasma levels of creatinine, BUN, MDA and the absolute excretion of sodium and potassium were increased in the GM group, while FRAP level was reduced compared to the sham group. In addition, congestion of renal Vessels and tubular cell necrosis was observed. We found that 300 mg/kg bw/day P. anisum significantly reduced the plasma concentrations of renal function markers in the group receiving GM (P < 0.05). Additionally, gentamicin-induced tubule damage was improved by P. anisum. Conclusion: We demonstrated the potential therapeutic impact of P. anisum to attenuate GM-induced nephrotoxicity. Therefore, the simultaneous use of ethanolic extract of P. anisum during GM administration is recommended to reduce its nephrotoxicity effects.
Potential effects of Resatorvid and alpha lipoic acid on gentamicin‐induced nephrotoxicity in rats

Abstract:The protective effects of resatorvid and alpha‐lipoic acid (ALA) against gentamicin‐induced nephrotoxicity were investigated in Wistar albino rats. Resatorvid and ALA demonstrated promising biochemical and molecular effects in preventing gentamicin‐induced nephrotoxicity. These interventions may open the way for a longer and more effective use of gentamicin in the treatment of infections. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic with a rapid bactericidal effect on the treatment of many infections. However, its use at high concentrations for more than 7 days causes nephrotoxic side effects. This study investigated the potential of Resatorvid and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) in mitigating gentamicin‐induced nephrotoxicity in rats, considering biochemical, histopathological, and molecular parameters. This study randomly distributed 34 Wistar albino rats into four groups: healthy control (n = 6), Gentamicin (80 mg/kg, n = 7), Gentamicin + Sham (%10 hydroalcoholic solution, n = 7), Gentamicin + Resatorvid (5 mg/kg, n = 7), and Gentamicin + ALA (100 mg/kg, n = 7). Resatorvid treatment led to a statistically significant decrease in urinary IL‐18, KIM‐1, and NGAL levels, whereas ALA treatment significantly reduced KIM‐1 levels compared to the gentamicin‐only group. Both Resatorvid and ALA showed partial reductions in urine creatinine levels. Moreover, treatments with Resatorvid and ALA resulted in statistically significant decreases in NRF‐2, CAS‐3, and NR4A2 expressions. However, only Resatorvid demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in NF‐B expression. These findings highlight the potential of Resatorvid in ameliorating gentamicin‐induced nephrotoxicity, thereby expanding the therapeutic utility of gentamicin and enhancing its efficacy against infections.

Abstract:Gentamicin is a potent antibiotic with a nephrotoxicity drawback which limits its use. D-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (α-tocopherol) is widely used as a surfactant and have potent antioxidant properties. This study aimed to assess the protective effect of α-tocopherol on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity by loading gentamicin on nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC). In vivo, the product was administered intravenously to three groups of rabbits (control, gentamicin and gentamicin/α-tocopherol NLC) for 10 consecutive days. Blood was collected on days 1, 5 and 10 to assess renal function. A significant difference in all plasma parameters related to kidney function were observed in the gentamicin group compared to the control by day 5 and 10, confirming the nephrotoxicity effect. On the other hand, the same parameter levels of the NLC group were significantly different compared to the gentamicin group, confirming the protective effect on kidney function. Gentamicin also caused significant decreases in plasma levels of glutathione sulfhydryl (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. However, gentamicin-α-tocopherol NLC significantly elevates both plasma levels of GSH as well as SOD activity. The present work indicates that, loading of gentamicin on NLC by using α-tocopherol, is an innovative strategy to protect against aminoglycoside-induced nephrotoxicity due to its antioxidant activity.
Dihydromyricetin protects against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity via upregulation of renal SIRT3 and PAX2

Abstract:Aim: Gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity limits its widespread use as an effective antibacterial agent. Oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic cell death are major participants in gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. We therefore, investigated whether dihydromyricetin (DHM), the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoid, could protect against the nephrotoxic effects of gentamicin. Methods: Male Wistar rats administrated gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day, i.p.) for 8 days. DHM (400 mg/kg, p.o.) was concurrently given with gentamicin for 8 days. Control group received the vehicle of DHM and gentamicin. Histopathological examinations, biochemical measurements and immunohistochemical analyses were done at the end of the study. Key findings: Treatment with DHM improved the gentamicin induced deterioration of renal functions; serum levels of urea, creatinine and cystatin-C as well as urinary levels of Kim-1 and NGAL, the sensitive indicators for early renal damage, were declined. Additionally, DHM abrogated gentamicin-induced changes in kidney morphology. These nephroprotective effects were possibly mediated via decreasing renal gentamicin buildup, activating the antioxidant enzymes GSH, SOD and CAT and decreasing lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide levels. Further, DHM suppressed renal inflammation and apoptotic cell death by decreasing the expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), TNF-alpha and caspase-3. These effects were correlated to the upregulation of renal SIRT3 expression. Also, DHM activated the regeneration and replacement of injured tubular cells with new ones via enhancing PAX2 expression. Significance: DHM is a promising therapeutic target that could prevent acute renal injury induced by gentamicin and help renal tubular cells to recover through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic properties.
Boosting impacts of Acacia nilotica against hepatic toxicity induced by gentamicin: biochemical, anti-inflammatory and immunohistochemical study

Abstract:It seems that gentamicin's toxicity to the liver is caused by reactive oxygen species production. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Acacia nilotica extract (AN) have been demonstrated in recent studies. This research focused on how AN's extract affected gentamicin-induced liver damage in rats. Twenty-four Wister rats of male type were divided into four groups: first group received saline as a control, second group received AN (5%) for fifteen days, group three received daily intraperitoneal injections of gentamicin (100 mg/kg) for fifteen days, and group four, as mentioned in groups 2 and 3, also received gentamicin injections and AN extraction (5%) for fifteen days. In order to conduct biochemical analysis, serum was extracted. Histopathology, immunohistochemistry analyses for hepatic toxicity were all performed on the collected tissue samples. Serum levels of ALT, AST, total bilirubin, and GGT were all elevated after using gentamicin. The inflammatory cytokines)IL-1, TNF-α and IL-6(, all were increased in gentamycin-injected group. There were showing deformity of bile duct, hepatocellular necrosis and infiltration of inflammatory cells congestion of portal vein, and hepatic sinusoids besides fibrosis of portal area (white arrows), hypertrophy in gentamycin-injected group compared to AN plus gentamycin administered rats. There were upregulation in the immunoreactivity of COX-2, IFNkB and TGF-beta1 (TGF-β1) in gentamycin intoxicated rats. When gentamicin and AN were administered together, hepatic biomarkers, inflammatory cytokines, histological, and immunohistochemical markers were all ameliorated by AN administration.
L-arginine attenuates dichlorvos-induced testicular toxicity in male Wistar rats by suppressing oxidative stress-dependent activation of caspase 3-mediated apoptosis

Abstract:Background: The continuous use of pesticides, such as dichlorvos, is a common agricultural and domestic practice. However, it is associated with shortfalls like testicular toxicity through the induction of oxidative stress-mediated signaling. On the other hand, L-arginine, a precursor of nitric oxide, has been reported to exert antioxidant activities and thus may attenuate dichlorvos-induced testicular toxicity. Aim: Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the effect of L-arginine treatment on dichlorvos-induced testicular toxicity. Materials and methods: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into four equal groups. The control rats were administered 0.5 mL of distilled water, dichlorvos- (DDVP-) treated rats were exposed to DDVP via inhalation for 15 min, DDVP + L-arginine-treated rats were exposed to DDVP and also received 100 mg/kg b.w/day, while L-arginine-treated rats received 100 mg/kg b.w/day. Results: DDVP exposure significantly reduced testicular nitric oxide, relative testicular weight, lowered sperm count, viability, and motility, and suppressed serum FSH, LH, and testosterone levels. These findings were associated with a rise in testicular malondialdehyde, TNF-α, IL-6, and 8OHdG levels and caspase 3 activities, and a reduction in GSH and superoxide dismutase. Additionally, on histopathological examination, DDVP was observed to reduce mature sperm cells in the seminiferous tubular lumen and induce focal vascular congestion in the interstitial space. Nonetheless, L-arginine treatment significantly attenuated DDVP-induced biochemical and histological alterations. Conclusion: This study showed that L-arginine attenuated testicular toxicity by improving epididymal sperm variables and male sex hormones by suppressing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in DDVP-exposed rats.

Abstract:Background: Torsion of the spermatic cord is a hazardous and common urologic issue. The current work evaluates the possible protective effect of pregabalin (PGB) and xanthenone (XAN) in testicular ischemia/reperfusion injury induced by testicular torsion/detorsion in rats. Materials and methods: Seven groups of adult male Wistar albino rats were allocated randomly into seven groups, namely, sham control, torsion/detorsion (T/D), PGB 50 mg/kg, PGB 100 mg/kg, XAN 1 mg/kg, XAN 2 mg/kg, and PGB 50 mg/kg plus XAN 1 mg/kg groups. Serum cholesterol and testosterone levels were determined. Also, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-қB), angiotensin (Ang) II, Ang-(1-7), and angiotensin-converting enzyme2 (ACE2) were assessed in testicular tissue. Immunohistochemical analysis of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and caspase-3 was performed. Finally, the histopathological examination of the testicular tissues was performed. Results: The PGB 50 mg/kg, PGB 100 mg/kg, XAN 1 mg/kg, XAN 2 mg/kg, and PGB 50 mg/kg plus XAN 1 mg/kg groups showed a significant decrease in serum cholesterol, MDA, NO, TNF-α, NF-қB, and Ang-II levels coupled with a significant increase in both testosterone and ACE2 expression. Furthermore, all test groups showed a significant improvement in the histopathological picture with a reduction in caspase-3 and an increase in HO-1 immunoexpression in testicular tissue. Conclusion: PGB and XAN may have promising effects on preventing testicular T/D injury through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic actions.

Abstract:Local intra-testicular injection for drug release is an important methodology for testicular diseases therapy. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are new nanomaterials which have several medical applications. This study aimed at investigating the time-dependent toxicity of MNPs after intra-testicular injection, and the protective effect of Echinacea purpurea (EP) extract as antioxidant and immune cells activator. To investigate the protective role of EP extract against MNPs toxicity in testicular tissues, EP extract was simultaneously administrated with MNPs. The intra-testicular injection of MNPs caused spermatogenic apoptosis, cellular necrosis, and interstitial fibrosis. Also, MNPs were found freely in the interstitial area attached to fiber bundles and to lamina propria of the seminiferous tubules. Simultaneous EP extract administration with MNPs injection for 11 wk reduced MNPs toxicity, compared to MNPs only. Also, most MNPs were co-localized in some interstitial cells/macrophages after this EP extract simultaneous administration. In this regard, MNPs were found as groups aggregated in lysosomal vacuoles of macrophages after EP extract administration. In the case of MNPs only injection, MNPs were found freely outside interstitial cells, attached to fiber bundles and surrounding myoid cells of seminiferous tubules. To conclude the simultaneous administration of EP extract/MNPs injection changed both cellular and subcellular biodistribution of MNPs in the testicular tissues. Our present findings indicate a prominent protective role for EP extract as an antioxidant and immune activator against MNPs intra-testicular injection-induced toxicity and may promise a new strategy for testicular disease therapies using nanomaterials.

Abstract:In the study, the ameliorating effects of alfa lipoic acid (ALA) against doxorubicin-induced testicular apoptosis, oxidative stress and disrupted mitochondrial fusion were investigated in male rats. Rats were divided into four groups as control, doxorubicin (DOX), DOX + ALA and ALA. A single dose of 15 mg/kg DOX was administered i.p to the DOX and DOX + ALA groups. 50 mg/kg ALA was given to the DOX + ALA and ALA groups by oral gavage every other day. After 28 days, rat testes and serum samples were collected and analysed. Administration of DOX alone caused a decrease in body and relative testicular weights, seminiferous tubule diameter and germinal epithelium thickness, Johnsen's score and serum testosterone levels. DOX treatment led to severe testicular damage such as tubular degeneration, and atrophic tubules. Also, the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were reduced, while the level of malondialdehyde was increased in the testis. The mRNA levels of apoptotic-related genes (CASP3, TP53, BAX, BCL2) and apoptotic index were increased, while mitofusin-2 decreased. DOX caused an increase in CASP3 and a decrease in mitofusin-2 immunoreactivities. Treatment with ALA markedly improved all of DOX-induced biochemical, histochemical and molecular alterations in rat testis. Consequently, ALA has a therapeutic role in ameliorating DOX-induced testicular damage in rats.

Abstract:Paeonol, a phenolic ingredient in the genus Paeonia, possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Methotrexate (MTX) is a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent; however, its germ cell damage is a critical problem. P-glycoprotein (P-gp), an efflux transporter, is a member of the blood–testis barrier. The present study evaluated the protective effect of paeonol on MTX-induced testicular injury in rats with the exploration of its mechanism and the possible contribution of P-gp in such protection. Testicular weight, serum testosterone, and testicular P-gp levels were measured. Testicular oxidant/antioxidant status was evaluated via determining the levels of malondialdehyde, total nitrite, reduced glutathione, and superoxide dismutase activity. The inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and the apoptotic marker caspase 3 were estimated immunohistochemically. Testicular histopathology and spermatogenesis scores were also examined. MTX caused histopathologically evident testicular damage with decreased testicular weight, testosterone level, and spermatogenesis score, as well as significant increases in oxidative, inflammatory, and apoptotic responses. Paeonol significantly restored testicular weight, testosterone level, spermatogenesis score, and oxidant/antioxidant balance. Moreover, paeonol increased the testicular P-gp level and significantly decreased TNF-α and caspase 3 immunostaining. In conclusion, paeonol offered a protective effect against MTX-induced testicular injury through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects, as well as by increasing testicular P-gp level.

Abstract:Background: Gentamicin (GM) is an antibiotic frequently used to treat severe gram-negative infections. However, due to nephrotoxicity, its clinical application is restricted. Several lines of evidence indicate that free radicals are important mediators of gentamicin nephrotoxicity. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to examine the potential antioxidant therapeutic value of ZnO-chitosan nanoparticles on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. Methods: Twenty-four rats were divided into four groups (6 rats/group). All groups except group 1 were injected with gentamicin (100 mg/kg body weight i.p.) for eight days. On day 9, rats of groups 1 and 2 were administrated distilled water, and those of groups 3 and 4 were administrated 1/10 and 1/20 LD50 of ZnO-CS-NPs continuously for 30 days. Results: Treatment with ZnO-CS NPs caused a significant decrease in urea, creatinine, uric acid, sodium, potassium, chloride, microalbumin, and malondialdehyde levels; this was accompanied by a significant increase in kidney glutathione reduced, nitric oxide, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, and catalase. Conclusion: The findings of the current study revealed that ZnO-CS NP ameliorated kidney injury against gentamicin induced-acute kidney injury in rats by its antioxidant properties.

Abstract:The auto-irrigator (4, 5) furnishes a convenient means for maintaining approximately constant moisture contents in the soil masses of pot cultures, the maintained moisture content being dependent on the kind of soil used (indicated by its water-holding power, moisture equivalent, etc.), on the packing of the soil, and on the hydrostatic head against which water moves from the irrigator reservoir into the soil mass. The experiments briefly described below were planned as a preliminary study of the relations between the growth of young wheat plants in autoirrigated pot cultures and the water-supplying power of the soil about their roots, this dynamic soil feature being itself controlled, for each kind of soil used, by the water content of the soil, controlled in turn by the height of the mercury column introduced between the irrigator reservoir and the water-supplying, porous-porcelain cone. The experiment here reported was carried out by Hemmi in the greenhouse of the Laboratory of Plant Physiology of the Johns Hopkins University, in the winter of 1922-23, and he left his notes with the other authors of this paper when he returned to Japan. The results seem worthy of publication because of the great fundamental importance of the water-supplying power of the soil in plant physiology and plant culture, and because they add considerably to our knowledge of the manner in which the auto-irrigator operates in practice. It seems to be becoming more generally appreciated that the influential conditions of plant environments must be controlled or quantitatively recorded for effective experimentation in plant physiology, and the moisture conditions of the soil are now among the environmental conditions most susceptible of control and satisfactory measurement.
