Abstract:By reacting an asymmetric semi-rigid V-shaped linker H(3)dpob (H(3)dpob = 3-(2'3'-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzoic acid) and Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O, nine novel Ln-based luminescent materials, from 1D to 3D, namely {[Eu.dpob).phen)]center dot H2O}(n) (1), {[Ln(Hdpob)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (Ln = Eu(2), Sm(3), Gd(4), Tb(5)), {[Eu(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O}(n) (6), and {[Ln(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot mH(2)O} n (Ln = Eu(7), Gd(8), Tb(9), m = 0.5 for 7 and 9; m = 1 for 8) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; H(2)ox = oxalic acid) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and PXRD. The crystal structures of 1-9 indicate that the coordination modes and coordination configuration of the H(3)dpob ligand play critical roles in the formation of the lanthanide architectures. Complexes 1-5 display multiple structures from double-stranded 1D chains to 4-connected 2D layers, through [Eu-2(CO2)(4)] or [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] dinuclear units with different auxiliary ligands. Complexes 6 and 7 are genuine supramolecular isomers which are induced by the concentration effect. 6 possesses a 2D kgd network with a Schlafli symbol of (4(3))(2)(4(6).6(6).8(3)) built from 6-connected [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] units and 3-connected H(3)dpob, which further connects to a (3,8)-connected tfz-d topology through O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. 7 displays a 3D (3,6)-connected rtl network with the Schlafli symbol (4.6(2))(2)(4(2).6(10).8(3)). Eu complexes 1, 2, 6, and 7 as well as Tb complexes 5 and 9 could provide intense and bright characteristic D-5(0) -> F-7(J)/D-5(4) -> F-7(J) red/green luminescence under UV excitation in the solid state at 298 K and 77 K. The calculated singlet and triplet energies of H(3)dpob as well as phen and H(2)ox ligands indicate that these ligands act as antenna chromophores that are able to efficiently absorb and transfer energy to Ln(III) ions. In complexes 1, 2 and 5, ligand-to-metal energy transfer processes could occur in mixed ligands. However, these processes occurred in a single H3dpob ligand in complexes 6 and 7. With careful adjustment of the relative concentration of the lanthanide ions and by varying the excitation wavelengths of {[Gd0.92Eu0.04Tb0.04(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O} n (10), tunable yellow (CIE coordinate: 0.51, 0.40) to white-light (CIE coordinate: 0.33, 0.34) emission has been obtained.
3D Lanthanide Metal–Organic Frameworks Based on Mono-, Tri-, and Heterometallic Tetranuclear Clusters As Highly Selective and Sensitive Luminescent Sensor for Fe3+ and Cu2+ Ions

Abstract:Five novel three-dimensional lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) constructed by 4-(3',5'-dicarboxylphenoxy) phthalic acid (H(4)dcppa), namely, {[Eu(Hdcppa)(H2O)(2)]center dot H2O}n (Eu-1), [Eu-1.5(dcppa) (HCOO)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]. (Eu-2), {[Ln(2)K(2)(dcFPa)(2)(H2O)(6)].m}H2O}(n) (Ln = Eu-3, Tb-4, Gd-5, m = 5 for Eu-3 and Tb-4; m = 4 for Gd-5) (HCOOH = formic acid) have been prepared by hydro(solvo)thermal method and fully characterized. Structural analyses indicated that H(4)dcppa ligand took four different coordination fashions in 1-5 and, thus, resulted in diversity of the targeted Ln-MOFs: Eu-1 displays the rare 3D (5,5)-connected vbk net, containing one-dimensional left and right-handed helical chains; Eu-2 possesses a 3D (3,8) -connected tfz-d topology constructed by trinuclear paddlewheel [Eu-3(CO)(26)] SBUs; 3-5 are isostructural and show 3D (Ln-dcppa(4-)) + 2D (K-dcppa(4-)) -> 3D (LnK-dcppa(4-)) structure. Eu-3, with regular 1D channels and open Lewis basic oxygen atoms on the pore surface was utilized for specific sensing and binding of metal ions through Lewis base interactions, shows high selectivity, fast response time (8 min), and high sensitivity (K-sv = 4.3/5.2 X 10(4) L/mol) for Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions with luminescent quenching. Furthermore, the detection limit of the sensor is in the 10(-6) M level. The triplet state (T-1 = 23364 cm(-1)) of H4dcppa studied by the Gd(III)-MOF and Gd-5 demonstrates that the ligand ideally populates Eu(III)/Tb(III) emission with luminescent quantum yields (Phi(overall) ) of 11.2% for Eu-1, 27.6% for Eu-2, 18.5% for Eu- 3, and 62% for Tb-4, respectively.
Synthesis, Crystal Structures and Properties of Lanthanide-Organic Frameworks Based Benzene Carboxylates with Two/Three-Dimensional Structure

Abstract:A series of lanthanide coordination polymers, {[Dy3(1,3-BDC)4(NO3)(phen)3]·2H2O}n (1), {[Dy2(1,3-BDC)3(H2O)2]·H2O}n (2), {[Ln4(1,3-BDC)6(DMF)(H2O)4]·DMF·2H2O}n (Ln=Tb (3), Ho (4), Er (5), 1,3-H2BDC=1,3-benzenedicarboxylate, phen=1,10-phenanthroline, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), have been synthesized and characterized. In coordination polymer 1, each Dy3+ ion is connected to its neighboring Dy3+ ion through bridging carboxyl oxygen atoms of the 1,3-BDC2− ligands to form a new three-dimensional open-framework structure which the Schläfli symbol of {64·82}2{66}. In coordination polymer 2, center metal dysprosium ions are interlaced and connected through bridging carboxyl oxygen atoms to form an infinite helix chain. Two helix chains are linked through the 1,3-BDC2− ligand to give rise to the two-dimensional layered structure. Coordination polymers 3–5 are isomorphous, which displays a (3,4)-connected net with the point symbol of {42·63·8}{42·6}. The solid-state photoluminescence properties and lifetimes of the Dy (1 and 2) and Tb (3) coordination polymers have been measured at room temperature.
Encapsulation and Sensitization of Ln(3+) Within Indium Metal-Organic Frameworks for Ratiometric Eu3+ Sensing and Linear Dependence of White-Light Emission

Abstract:Four novel compounds {[In(FDA)(HFDA)-(H2O4] center dot 2H(2)O} (Inl.) and I [Ln(2)(FDA)(2)(H2O)(10)]center dot FDA center dot 6H(2)O} (Ln = Dy2, Eu3, Gd4) have been hydrothermally synthesized by using the ligand furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)FDA). Driven by hydrogen bonding and pi...pi stacking, In1 displays a supramolecular metal-organic framework (MOF) with 6-connected pcu topology. Isostructural Dy2, Eu3, and exhibit bnn topological structures with the Schlafli symbol of Gd4 possess one-dimensional "wave-like" chains and further (4(6).6(4)) via a hydrogen bonding network. The triplet state (T-1 = 22371 cm(-1)) of H(2)FAD studied by compound Gd4 indicates that the energy transition from the H(2)FDA ligand to the Eu3 ion in compound Eu3 is efficient but inefficient to the Dy3+ ion in compound Dy2. Interestingly, the uncoordinated carbonyl group of compound In1 can sensitize Ln(3+) ions to obtain Dy3+@In1 and Eu3+@In1 materials for enhancing luminescence. The possible sensitization mechanism is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and surface photovoltage spectroscopy. When the Eu3 ion is increased from 0.0 to 1.6 mu M in aqueous solution, compound In1 exhibits a distinguishable luminescence color change from blue to red with a fast detection time (<2 min), and the ratio of luminescence intensity at 617 nm to that at 408 rim (I-617/I-408) enhances linearly with a low detection limit of 0.87 mu M. Additionally, with careful adjustment of lanthanide(III) ions, white-light emission material could be achieved with metal content of Dy0.87Eu0.13.
2D Lanthanide MOFs Driven by a Rigid 3,5-Bis(3-carboxy-phenyl)pyridine Building Block: Solvothermal Syntheses, Structural Features, and Photoluminescence and Sensing Properties

Abstract:A new series of five lanthanide(III) metal-organic frameworks with a general formula of [Ln(3)(bcpb)(4)(mu-HCOO)( mu-H2O)(H2O)(2)(DEF)](n) (1-5) was generated by solvothermal reactions from Ln(NO3)(3).6H(2)O {Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3), Dy (4), and Sm (5)} and 3,5-bis(3-carboxyphenyl) pyridine (H(2)bcpb) in an aqueous N, N-diethylformamide (DEF) medium. The obtained products were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The latter reveals that all compounds (1-5) are isostructural and feature very intricate 2D metal-organic frameworks. These were topologically analyzed, revealing a very complex hexanodal underlying net that can be simplified further to a binodal 3,5-connected layer with the 3,5L52 topology. Solid-state photoluminescence properties of 1-5 were studied in detail. Compound 1 exhibits a strong red luminescence upon excitation at 338 nm and its lifetime is 532 mu s. Compound 2 shows an intense green luminescence upon excitation at 336 and its lifetime is 981 mu s. The triplet state ((3)pi pi*) of bcpb(2-) studied by using the Gd(III) derivative 3 demonstrated that the ligand effectively populates Tb(III) emission (Phi = 70.96%), whereas the corresponding Eu(III) derivative 1 shows a weak luminescence efficiency (Phi = 15.81%) as the triplet state of bcpb(2-) has a poor match with the D-5(0) energy level of Eu(III). A notable feature of 1 is its remarkable sensing ability for Cu2+ ions and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). Besides, a series of heterobimetallic Tb-based MOFs, [Tb3(1-x)Eu3x(bcpb)(4)(mu-HCOO)(mu-H2O)(H2O)(2)(DEF)](n) {x = 0.001, 0.002, 0.003, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20} (compounds 2a-2j, respectively), was prepared. The luminescence studies reveal that the simultaneous presence of the characteristic sharp emission bands of Eu3+ and Tb3+ allows the tuning of the photoluminescence colors of such materials by adjusting the doping concentration of the Eu3+ ions.
Series of Highly Stable Lanthanide-Organic Frameworks Constructed by a Bifunctional Linker: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Magnetic and Luminescence Properties.

Abstract:By utilizing a preselected functional ligand produced by 1 H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid, three isostructural lanthanide coordination polymers (CPs), denoted as {[Ln2(OH)2(L)2]·(DMF)·(H2O)4} n (Ln = Gd (1), Eu (2), Dy (3); L = 1-(4-carboxybenzyl)imidazole-4-carboxylic acid), containing a 1D infinite [Ln4(OH)4] subchain have been successfully constructed. The highly connected mode between the multifunctional ligand and 1D building units is responsible for the exceptional chemical stability of three lanthanide CPs. In addition, a study of the magnetic properties reveals that 1 displays a large magnetic entropy change (-Δ Sm = 30.33 J kg-1 K-1 with T = 2 K and Δ H = 7 T). Furthermore, genetic algorithm and quantum Monte Carlo methods were combined to simulate the magnetic coupling parameters of compound 1, shedding light on the effect of linking bridges on magnetic propagation. 2 shows intense luminescence in the range of 350-710 nm. Comparably, magnetic studies of 3 reveal the existence of a metamagnetic transformation from an antiferromagnetic interaction to a ferromagnetic interaction along with a decrease in temperature. Through fitting of the results of HF-EPR measurements, a component of the g tensor is obtained, g|| = 16.4(5), indicating the large anisotropy of 3.

Abstract:A family of isostructural 2D multinuclear LnIII-incorporated organic–inorganic hybrid arsenotungstates were fleetly synthesized, denoted as K4[{Ln(H2O)7}2 {As4W44O143(OH)8(H2O)6(DL-ala)2}{Ln2(H2O)4(DL-ala)}2]‧54H2O (Ln=Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3)), containing a centrosymmetric polyanion [{As4W44O143(OH)8(H2O)6(DL-ala)2}{Ln2(H2O)4(DL-ala)}2]8–. The polyanion is constituted of two {As2W19O62(OH)2(H2O)3}6– building blocks encapsulating a deca-nuclear Ln-W heterometallic cluster [W6O21(OH)4(DL-ala)2{Ln2(H2O)4(DL-ala)}2]6–. Obtained compounds were characterized by means of elemental chemical analysis, thermogravimetric, single crystal X-ray and powder diffraction and FT-IR studies. The optical band-gaps of 1 and 2 are 3.05 eV and 3.09 eV, respectively, according to the UV–Vis diffuse reflectance. In addition, 1 and 2 demonstrate the solid-state fluorescence performance (1: orange, 2: red), of which the POMs chromophore can be considered as an antenna ligand to improve luminescence efficiency of LnIII centers via energy migration.

Abstract:Lanthanide coordination polymers [LnL(DMF)(2)]center dot 0.25H(2)O [Ln = La (1), Ce (2), Pr (3), Nd (4), Sm (5), Eu (6), Gd (7), Tb (8), Dy (9), Ho (10), Er (11), and Tm (12)], and [GdL(H2O)(3)] (7') (H3L = 5-(4-carboxy-2-nitrophenoxy)-isophthalic acid), have been synthesized under hydro-and solvothermal conditions, respectively. Compounds 1-12 exhibit the same three-dimensional (3D) architecture, which is built up from binuclear paddle-wheel building blocks, and their resulting frameworks can be rationalized as rarely reported flu-3,6-C2/c topology. Compound 7' crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c. The ligands (L) bridge the Gd(III) centers to form 3D frameworks featuring a zeolite BCT topology, which have been unreported based on rare earth metals until now. Moreover, compound 6 exhibits characteristic red luminescent properties of Eu(III) complexes. The magnetic susceptibilities, over a temperature range of 2.0-300 K, of 7 and 7' have also been investigated.
Two Novel One-dimensional Inorganic-Organic Hybrids Constructed from [H2W12O40]6– Clusters and Lanthanide-organic Complexes: [(C5H5N-CO2)2Ln(H2O)3]2[H2W12O40]·nH2O (C5H5N-CO2 = Pyridine-4-carboxylate; Ln = La3+, n = 5; Ce3+, n = 7)

Abstract:Two novel polyoxotungstate-based rare earth compounds, [(C5H5N-CO2)2Ln(H2O)3]2- [H2W12O40] · nH2O (C5H5N-CO2 = pyridine-4-carboxylate; Ln = La3+ (1), n = 5; Ce3+ (2), n = 7), have been synthesized in aqueous solution and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, IR spectra and TG analyses. The isostructural compounds 1 and 2 exhibit onedimensional (1D) zig-zag chains, in which the dinuclear lanthanide complexes act as bridging linkers and the [H2W12O40]6− groups serve as bidentate ligands. The results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) show that compounds 1 and 2 undergo two two-electron redox processes, similar to that of the parent (NH4)6[H2W12O40] ·3H2O, and also reveal that the pH of the supporting electrolytic solution has a notable effect on the electrochemical behavior of compound 2.

Versatile Lanthanide Coordination Assemblies Due to the Synergistic Effect of Lanthanide Contraction and Flexibility of A Flexible Tricarboxylate Ligand

Abstract:Nine novel lanthanide coordination complexes with formulae {[Ln(TTTA)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (Ln = Ce, 1 center dot Ce; Pr, 2 center dot Pr, Nd, 3 center dot Nd; Sm, 4 center dot Sm; Eu, 5 center dot Eu and Tb, 6 center dot Tb) and {[Ln(TTTA)(H2O)3]center dot 3H(2)O}(n) (Ln = Dy, 7 center dot Dy; Er, 8 center dot Er and Yb, 9 center dot Yb) have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions of a new flexible ligand TTTA (2,29,2"-[1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyltris(thio)] tris-acetic acid) with corresponding lanthanide nitrate and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, thermal analysis, luminescence and magnetic measurements. Due to the synergistic effect of lanthanide contraction with diverse coordination modes and conformations of the flexible ligand, they have three structural types from 3-D polymers to 0-D dimers. Type I for large ions, 1 center dot Ce, 2 center dot Pr and 3 center dot Nd, possesses a rare 3-D five-connected 4 6 6 4 network with 1-D helical inorganic Ln(2)O(2) chains bridged by the organic ligands; type II for medium ions, 4 center dot Sm, 5 center dot Eu and 6 center dot Tb, exhibits 1-D chains constructed from Ln(2)( CO2) 4 units connected by the V-shaped conformational ligand; and type III for small ions, 7 center dot Dy, 8 center dot Er and 9 center dot Yb, is scarcely an M2L2 dimer structure. Fascinatingly, in the low-dimensional type II and III structures, different kinds of unusual cyclic hydrogen bonding interactions are formed which, together with other weak interactions such as S. H -O hydrogen bonds, noncovalent S. S interactions or p. p stacking interactions, play important roles in stabilizing the whole network. In addition, the 5 center dot Eu and 6 center dot Tb complexes show strong red and green photoluminescence at room temperature, respectively, and may be good candidates for potential luminescence materials. The magnetic properties for some of the structures have also been investigated.

Abstract:Reactions of tripodal ligand 1,3,5-tris(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene (L) with lanthanide metal salts and triethyl orthoformate led to the formation of six bowl-like dinuclear compounds [Ln(2)(L)(HL)(NO3)(6)(HCOO)](.)3CH(3)OH (Ln = Gd 1, Tb 2, Dy 3, Er 4, Yb 5, and Eu 6). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that six complexes are isomorphous and isostructural and that the dinuclear molecules are further connected by hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions, resulting in 3D channel-like structures. The luminescence properties have been studied, and the results showed that the Tb(III) (2) and Eu(III) (6) complexes exhibited sensitized luminescence in the visible region and their luminescence lifetimes in powder and DMSO-d(6) solution are in the range of milliseconds. The Yb(III) complex (5) emits typical near-infrared luminescence in DMSO-d6 solution. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1-6 showed that complex 1 (Gd) is nearly a paramagnet and complexes 2 (Tb), 3 (Dy), and 4 (Er) show the ferromagnetic coupling between magnetic centers, whereas the depopulation of the Stark levels in complexes 5 (Yb) and 6 (Eu) leads to a continuous decrease in XmT when the sample is cooled from 300 to 1.8 K.
Novel Dense Organic-Lanthanide Hybrid Architectures: Syntheses, Structures and Magnetic Properties

Abstract:Six novel three-dimensional (3D) dense organic-lanthanide(III) frameworks with formula {[Ln(HBPTCA)(H2O)].3H2O}n [Ln = La (1), Ce (2), Sm (3)] and [Ln4(BPTCA)3(H2O)4]n [Ln = Tb (4), Dy (5), Ho (6)] were obtained by reactions of the corresponding lanthanide nitrate salt with 4,4'-bipyridine-2,2',6,6'-tetracarboxylic acid (H4BPTCA) under different conditions. Complexes 1-3 have the same structure with (4, 6(2))(2)(4(2), 6(10), 8(3)) topology, which is rare binodal (3, 6)-connecting rutile structure, while the complexes 4-6 also with the same structure have different topology of (4(2), 6)(4)(6, 8(2))(4)(4(3), 6(3))(4)(4(2), 6(4))(6)(4(4), 6(5), 8(5), 10). The results indicate that the reaction conditions have great influence on the structure of the resulted complexes in this system. In addition, the H4BPTCA was found to be an effective bridging ligand for construction of novel lanthanide-based dense hybrids, and two new coordination modes of the BPTCA4- were found in the complexes. The photoluminescent property of 4 and magnetic properties of 2, 5 and 6 were also investigated.

Abstract:Isostructural lanthanide oxalatophosphonates Ln(5pm8hqH3)(C2O4)1.5(H2O)·2H2O [Ln(III) = Eu(1), Gd(2), Tb(3), Dy(4)] have been obtained through hydrothermal reactions of 5-phosphonomethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline (5pm8hqH3), oxalate, and Ln(NO3)3·6H2O. Four compounds reveal layer structures, in which {LnO8} polyhedra are linked through oxalate units into a netlike {Ln(C2O4)1.5}n layer containing 24-member ring composed of six Ln(III) ions and six oxalate anions. The noncoordinated 8-hydroxyquinoline groups protrude from two sides of the layer. Neighboring layers are further connected to each other through hydrogen bonds and aromatic stacking of the 8-hydroxyquinoline rings, forming a supramolecular 3D structure. In magnetic measurements, compound 2 shows weak antiferromagnetic interactions. The magnetic behaviors of 1, 3 and 4 are ascribed to the depopulation of the Stark levels and weak antiferromagnetic interactions. In the solid-state fluorescent measurements, strong ligand-centered emissions and weak Ln(III)-centered emissions can be observed for 1 and 4, while only ligand-centered emissions for 2 and 3.

Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln)-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) have attracted particular attention owing to their structural diversity and potential applications in luminescence, magnetism, and catalysis. Herein three types of Ln-containing tungstotellurates(VI) (Ln = Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+, Yb3+, and Lu3+), dimeric (DMAH) n [H22-n {Ln(H2O)3[TeW17O61]}2]·mH2O (abbreviated as {Ln2Te2W34}; DMAH+ = dimethylammonium), mono-substituted (DMAH)7Na2{H2Ln(H2O)4[TeW17O61]}·mH2O (abbreviated as {LnTeW17}), and three-dimensional (3D) inorganic frameworks (DMAH) n {H3-n Ln(H2O)4[TeW6O24]}·mH2O (abbreviated as {LnTeW6}), have been synthesized by using simple metal salts and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other routine techniques. Interestingly, the assembly of these POMs is pH dependent. Using the same starting materials, {Ln2Te2W34} were obtained at pH 1.7, where two Dawson-like monovacant [TeW17O61]14- are linked by two Ln3+ ions; mono-substituted Dawson-like {LnTeW17} were isolated at pH 1.9, and 3D inorganic framework {LnTeW6} based on Anderson-type [TeW6O24]6- were formed at pH 2.3. It was also found that the assembly of Ln-containing POMs depends on the type of Ln3+ ions. The three types of POMs can be prepared by using Ln3+ ions with a relatively smaller ionic radius, such as Tb3+-Lu3+, while the use of Ln3+ ions (La3+-Eu3+) results in the formation of precipitation or {TeW18O62} clusters. Furthermore, three {LnTeW6} (Ln = Tb3+, Er3+, Lu3+) were used as Lewis acid catalysts for the cyanosilylation of benzaldehydes, and their catalytic activity decreases with the decrease of Ln3+ ionic radius, giving the order: {TbTeW6} > {ErTeW6} > {LuTeW6}. Notably, {TbTeW6} is stable to leaching and can be reused for five cycles without a significant loss of its activity.

Abstract:Three seven-coordinate lanthanide(III) sandwich-type mononuclear complexes with π-conjugated TTF-Schiff base ligand H2L (L(2-) = 2,2'-((2-(4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-diyl)bis(nitrilomethylidyne)bis(4-chlorophenolate)) and the tripodal ligand L(OEt)(-) (L(OEt)(-) = [(η(5)-C5H5)Co(P(═O)(OEt)2)3](-)), [(L(OEt))Ln(L)]·0.25H2O (Ln(3+) = Dy(3+), 1; Tb(3+), 2; Ho(3+), 3), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. All of the complexes are also characterized by absorption spectra and electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and magnetic studies. The Dy complex exhibits the field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization with an energy barrier of 41.6 K, indicating it shows single lanthanide-based SMM behavior. Introduction of the redox-active TTF unit into the sandwich-type lanthanide(III) complexes with interesting magnetic properties renders them promising for elaboration of new hybrid inorganic-organic materials.

Abstract:Two lanthanoid-containing 3D coordination polymers, [Gd2L3(H2O)(2)](n) (1) and {[TbL1.5(H2O)](.)0.5H(2)O}(n) (2) (L = succinate), have been prepared by hydrothermal reaction. The difference in structure between the two 3D coordination polymers is a result of the flexibility of the ligand conformation. The magnetic properties of I and 2 have been investigated in the 1.8-300 K range. Both complexes exhibit ferromagnetic interaction between lanthanoid ions. AC magnetic measurements revealed long-range magnetic order in complex 2. Especially 2 integrates the ferromagnetic, fluorescent and porous properties into a single entity. Abstract:Four chair-like hexanuclear Fe-Ln complexes containing mixed organic ligands, namely, [Fe(4)Ln(2){(py)(2)CO2}(4)(pdm)(2)(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2)Cl-4]center dot xCH(3)CN center dot yH(2)O (Ln = Gd-III (1, x = 1, y = 0), Dy-III (2, x = 1, y = 1), Ho-III (3, x = 0, y = 2), and Er-III (4, x = 1, y = 3); (py)(2)CO2H2 = the gem-diol form of di-2-pyridyl ketone and pdmH(2) = 2,6-pyridinedimethanol) have been obtained by employing di-2-pyridyl ketone and 2,6-pyridinedimethanol reacting with FeCl3 and Ln(NO3)(3) in MeCN. The structures of 1-4 are similar to each other except for the number of lattice solvent molecules. Four Fe-III and two Ln(III) in these complexes comprise a chair-like core with the "body" constructed by four Fe-III ions and the "end" constructed by two Ln(III) ions. Among the four compounds, 2 shows field-induced single molecule magnet behavior as revealed by ac magnetic susceptibility studies, with the effective energy barrier and the pre-exponential factor of 22.07 K and 8.44 x 10(-7) s, respectively. Ab initio calculations indicated that, among 2_Dy, 3_Ho and 4_Er fragments, the energy gap between the lowest two spin-orbit states for 2_Dy is the largest, while the tunneling gap for 2 is the smallest. These might be the reasons for complex 2 exhibiting SMM behavior. Additionally, the orientations of the magnetic anisotropy of Dy-III in 2 were obtained by electrostatic calculations and ab initio calculations, both indicating that the directions of the main magnetic axis of Dy1 ions are almost aligned along Dy1-O5 (O5 from the pdm(2-) ligand).

Abstract:A series of new 4d-4f heterometallic coordination complexes based on 5-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl) benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (H2L), namely [AgLn(L)(2)(H2O)(4)] [Ln = Nd (1), Eu (2) and Tb (3)], [AgLn(L)2] [Ln = Nd (4), Eu (5) and Tb (6)] and [AgLn(L)(2)(H2O)]center dot H2O [Ln Er (7) and Yb (8)] were successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, elemental and thermogravimetric analyses. Complexes 1-3 consist of two-dimensional (2D) networks, which are further connected by hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions to give three-dimensional (3D) frameworks. Complexes 4-6 display a 3D (4,6)-connected framework containing 2D heterometallic bilayers. Complexes 7 and 8 are 3-fold interpenetrated (3,4,6)-connected 3D frameworks. The results show that the reaction temperature and the lanthanide have great influence on the structure of the complexes. Luminescent measurements revealed that 2, 3, 5 and 6 exhibit the characteristic emission bands of the lanthanide in the visible region with lifetimes in the range of 0.24-1.81 ms and the strongest emissions are D-5(0) -> F-7(2) for 2 and 5, and D-5(4) -> F-7(5) transitions for 3 and 6.

Abstract:By adjusting the pH values, two types of heterometallic complexes originated from the same raw materials but with different structures and colors have been successfully designed and constructed. Eleven 3d–4f cobalt–lanthanoid heterometallic complexes, [Ln 2 Co 2 (2,5-DCB) 10 (phen) 2 ] [Ln = Nd ( 1 and 1a ), Sm ( 2 and 2a ), Eu ( 3 and 3a ), Gd ( 4 ), Tb ( 5 ), Dy ( 6 ), Er ( 7 ), and Yb ( 8 )], were prepared through the self-assembly reactions of Ln(NO 3 ) 3 · n H 2 O, Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O, 2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,5-HDCB), NaOH, and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) under solvothermal conditions. All of these complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Complexes 1 and 1a ( 2 and 2a , 3 and 3a ) are available at different pH ranges, respectively. Their structures and colors are different from each other. Complexes 1–8 and 1a–3a are found to be isostructural, respectively. The photoluminescence properties of 3 and 3a as well as the magnetic properties of 1 , 2 , 1a , 2a , and 4–8 were investigated. Complexes 3 and 3a display similar characteristic luminescence of Eu( III ) and different emission lifetimes. Complex 4 exhibits weak ferromagnetic coupling between the spin carriers below 10 K, and complex 6 shows a slow magnetic relaxation behavior.

Abstract:Two series of lanthanoid (Ln)-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) {[Ln6(ampH)4(H2O)24-n(ampH2)n(PW11O39)2]·21H2O (Ln = Tb, n = 0 (1), Ln = Er, n = 1 (2)) and K2[Ln6(ampH)4(H2O)22(SiW11O39)2]·23H2O (Ln = Tb (3), Er (4)) (ampH2 = (aminomethyl) phosphonic acid)} have been synthesized with tri-lacunary Keggin-type POMs containing different types of heteroatoms. Compounds 1 and 2 display neutral organic-inorganic hybrid POM molecules containing {Ln6(ampH)4} ({Ln6}) cores sandwiched by two {PW11O39} units. By changing the heteroatoms from PV to SiIV, the extended 2D networks of 3 and 4 were successfully isolated where the adjacent {Ln6} clusters were connected by {SiW11O39} moieties. Luminescence performances and magnetic properties of 1-4 have been systematically surveyed. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 display characteristic emissions of Ln components resulting from the 4f-4f transitions, and energy transfer from the POM segments to Ln3+ centers in 1 and 3 has been observed based on the lifetime decay behaviors. Furthermore, all compounds can be utilized as electrocatalysts toward reduction of nitrite with high stability.
