Abstract:Cesium-bearing microparticles (Cs-BMPs) can reach the human respiratory system after inhalation, resulting in chronic local internal exposure. We previously investigated the spatial distribution of DNA damage induced in areas around a Cs-BMP; however, the biological impacts have not been fully clarified due to the limited amount of data. Here, we investigated the inflammatory signaling and DNA damage responses after local exposure to a Cs-BMP in vitro. We used two normal human lung cell lines, i.e., lung fibroblast cells (WI-38) and bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC3-KT). After 24 h exposure to a Cs-BMP, inflammation was evaluated by immunofluorescent staining for nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) p65 and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). The number of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) was also detected by means of phospholylated histone H2AX (γ-H2AX) focus formation assay. Cs-BMP exposure significantly increased NF-κB p65 and COX-2 expressions, which were related to the number of γ-H2AX foci in the cell nuclei. Compared to the uniform (external) exposure to 137Cs γ-rays, NF-κB tended to be more activated in the cells proximal to the Cs-BMP, while both NF-κB p65 and COX-2 were significantly activated in the distal cells. Experiments with chemical inhibitors for NF-κB p65 and COX-2 suggested the involvement of such inflammatory responses both in the reduced radiosensitivity of the cells proximal to Cs-BMP and the enhanced radiosensitivity of the cells distal from Cs-BMP. The data show that local exposure to Cs-BMP leads to biological effects modified by the NF-κB pathway, suggesting that the radiation risk for Cs-BMP exposure can differ from that estimated based on conventional uniform exposure to normal tissues.

Abstract:In order to understand the chemical properties and environmental impacts of low-solubility Cs-rich microparticles (CsMPs) derived from the FDNPP, the CsMPs collected from Tokyo were investigated at the atomic scale using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and dissolution experiments were performed on the air filters. Remarkably, CsMPs 0.58-2.0 micrometer in size constituted 80%-89% of the total Cs radioactivity during the initial fallout events on 15th March, 2011. The CsMPs from Tokyo and Fukushima exhibit the same texture at the nanoscale: aggregates of Zn-Fe-oxide nanoparticles embedded in amorphous SiO2 glass. The Cs is associated with Zn-Fe-oxide nanoparticles or in the form of nanoscale inclusions of intrinsic Cs species,rather than dissolved in the SiO2 matrix. The Cs concentration in CsMPs from Tokyo (0.55-10.9 wt%) is generally less than that in particles from Fukushima (8.5-12.9 wt%).The radioactivity per unit mass of CsMPs from Tokyo is still as high as 1E11 Bq/g, which is extremely high for particles originating from nuclear accidents. Thus, inhalation of the low-solubility CsMPs would result in a high localized energy deposition by beta (0.51-12)*1E-3 Gy/h within the 100-micrometer-thick water layer on the CsMP surface) and may have longer-term effects compared with those predicted for soluble Cs-species.

Abstract:Scientists face challenge in identifying the radioactive materials which are found as dotted images on various imaging plate (IP) autoradiographic photos of radioactively contaminated materials by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1NPP, or FDNPP) accident, such as air filter, fugitive dust, surface soil, agricultural materials, and water-shed samples. It has been revealed that they are minute particles with distinct morphology and elemental composition with high specific radioactivity, and different from those of the so-called Chernobyl hot particles. Basically, they are glassy particles once molten, composed of Si, O, Fe, Zn etc. with highly concentrated radiocaesium, which can be called as radiocaesium-bearing microparticles (CsMP). At present, CsMP can be classified into two types, Types-A and -B, which are characterized by different specific radioactivity, 134Cs/137Cs ratio, size and morphology, and geographic distribution around F1NPP. Such studies on the CsMP from various aspects have provided valuable information about what happened in the nuclear reactors during the F1NPP accident and fates of the CsMP in the environment. This review first provides a retrospective view on the research history of the CsMP, which is helpful to understand the unique character of the CsMP. Subsequently, more details about the current understanding of the natures of these hot particles, such as origin, morphology, chemical compositions, thermal properties, water-solubility, and secondary migration of CsMP in river and ocean systems are described with future prospects.

The potential for disease initiation by inhaled beta-emitting nuclear particles

Abstract:There were many anecdotal reports of injuries to humans, animals and plants following the Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents that were indicative of radiation exposures that delivered a dose of at least 0.5 Sieverts, but studies that attempted to relate observed increases of cancer rates and other injuries with exposure to the radioactive releases from these accidents have failed to find an association. To resolve this dissonance, it was assumed that an analysis of knowledge about accident releases and health effects gathered from one of these accidents could lead to the identification of an unrecognized exposure that could be inferred to have caused a specific observed injury that required a dose of at least 0.5 Sieverts. Because there is considerably more useful knowledge of reactor releases of radionuclides and observed health effects related to the Three Mile Island accident, that knowledge is analyzed. A relationship is inferred to exist between exposure to particulates in plumes released from the station vent stack and severe prolonged immunosuppression, a known effect of an exposure that delivers a dose of at least 0.5 Sieverts. More than ninety percent of the particulates were comprised of Strontium 89 nuclides, essentially pure beta emitters. Because Strontium is a metal, the nuclides in the particulates were configured as stable crystals which, when coming to rest in body tissue, functioned as intense point sources of chronic beta irradiation. The inference led to the hypothesis "particulates comprised of Strontium 89 nuclides provided the exposure that caused the health effects that were observed following the Three Mile Island accident". The hypothesis was tested for validity against two requirements; that only the humans beneath the plumes, who would have inhaled the particulates, expressed the abrupt and persistent rise in the health parameter Deaths from all Causes that would result from the severe prolonged immunosuppression that follows a 0.5 Sievert dose, and that they expressed the excess cancers that would be expected following organ doses of 0.5 or more Sieverts. These effects were found. The Hypothesis is therefore valid and leads to knowledge of the heretofore unknown mechanisms and effects of low LET beta irradiation by a particulate.
Formation of radioactive cesium microparticles originating from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident: characteristics and perspectives

Abstract:Following identification of radioactive Cs microparticles (CsMPs) in aerosol samples from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), numerous reports on CsMPs have been published. This paper reviews recent progress in the measurement and characterization of CsMPs by advanced analytical techniques, including advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and synchrotron X-ray analysis. These analyses revealed that the CsMPs contained Si, Fe, Zn, Cs, and minor quantities of U together with some fission products. Uranium in the CsMPs was identified as being in the form of uraninite and (U,Zr)O2. Detailed advanced TEM analysis has clarified some of the processes resulting in the alteration of constituents of the nuclear fuels and containment vessel materials during this severe accident. In addition, a detailed report on the elemental compositions and structures of the fuel debris fragments collected inside and outside of the primary containment vessel25 highlighted the fact that the fuel debris fragments contained nanoparticles with the U and Zr components having similar structures to that of the CsMPs. This similarity in structures has stimulated further research on the structure and elemental constituents, especially for U and Zr in the CsMPs, and has opened up new avenues for studying the chemical characteristics of the fuel debris.

Abstract:Highly radioactive cesium-rich microparticles (CsMPs) released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) provide nano-scale chemical fingerprints of the 2011 tragedy. U, Cs, Ba, Rb, K, and Ca isotopic ratios were determined on three CsMPs (3.79–780 Bq) collected within ~10 km from the FDNPP to determine the CsMPs’ origin and mechanism of formation. Apart from crystalline Fe-pollucite, CsFeSi2O6 · nH2O, CsMPs are comprised mainly of Zn–Fe-oxide nanoparticles in a SiO2 glass matrix (up to ~30 wt% of Cs and ~1 wt% of U mainly associated with Zn–Fe-oxide). The 235U/238U values in two CsMPs: 0.030 (±0.005) and 0.029 (±0.003), are consistent with that of enriched nuclear fuel. The values are higher than the average burnup estimated by the ORIGEN code and lower than non-irradiated fuel, suggesting non-uniform volatilization of U from melted fuels with different levels of burnup, followed by sorption onto Zn–Fe-oxides. The nano-scale texture and isotopic analyses provide a partial record of the chemical reactions that occurred in the fuel during meltdown. Also, the CsMPs were an important medium of transport for the released radionuclides in a respirable form.

External Cesium-137 doses to humans from soil influenced by the Fukushima and Chernobyl nuclear power plants accidents: a comparative study

Abstract:External exposure to gamma-photon irradiation from soil contamination due to nuclear power plant (NPP) accidents has significant contribution to human radiation exposure in the proximity of the NPP. Detailed absorbed doses in human organs are rarely reported in the literature. We applied the Monte Carlo Neutron Particle (MCNP) transport code to calculate and compare the absorbed doses in different human organs. The absorbed doses by gamma-photon radiation were from cesium-137 (137Cs) in soil contaminated by the two major NPP accidents. More serious and wide-spread impacts of the Chernobyl NPP accident on soil contamination in Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and countries as far as Sweden and Greece were due to the inland location, radiative plume transport pathway and high 137Cs emission strength (9 times the Fukushima emission). Based on our MCNP calculations, the largest absorbed dose was found in skin. The maximum calculated external 137Cs annual effective dose received from the Chernobyl accident was 10 times higher relative to the Fukushima accident. Our calculated effective doses at various influenced areas were comparable to those available in the literature. The calculated annual effective doses at areas near the Fukushima and Chernobyl NPPs exceeded the ICRP recommendation of 1 mSv yr-1.

Abstract:Abstract Spherical radioactive caesium (Cs)-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were emitted during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in March, 2011. The emission source (timing) and formation process of these particles remain unclear. In this study, the isotopic ratios of uranium ( 235 U and 238 U) and caesium ( 133 Cs, 134 Cs, 135 Cs, and 137 Cs) isotopes in the five spherical CsMPs (ca. 2 μm in size) sampled at 50 km west of the FDNPP were determined using secondary ion mass spectrometry and laser ablation-ICPMS, respectively. Results showed that the 235 U/ 238 U ratios of CsMPs were homogeneous (1.93 ± 0.03, N = 4) and close to those estimated for the fuel cores in units 2 and 3, and that the Cs isotopic ratios of CsMP were identical to those of units 2 and 3. These results indicated that U and Cs in the spherical CsMPs originated exclusively from the fuel melt in the reactors. Based on a thorough review of literatures related to the detailed atmospheric releases of radionuclides, the flow of plumes from the FDNPP reactor units during the accident and the U and Cs isotopic ratio results in this study, we hereby suggest that the spherical CsMPs originate only from the fuel in unit 2 on the night of 14 March to the morning of 15 March. The variation range of the analysed 235 U/ 238 U isotopic ratios for the four spherical particles was extremely narrow. Thus, U may have been homogenised in the source through the formation of fuel melt, which ultimately evaporating and taken into CsMPs in the reactor and was released from the unit 2.

Repair Kinetics of DNA Double Strand Breaks Induced by Simulated Space Radiation

Abstract:Radiation is unavoidable in space. Energetic particles in space radiation are reported to induce cluster DNA damage that is difficult to repair. In this study, normal human fibroblasts were irradiated with components of space radiation such as proton, helium, or carbon ion beams. Immunostaining for γ-H2AX and 53BP1 was performed over time to evaluate the kinetics of DNA damage repair. Our data clearly show that the repair kinetics of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) induced by carbon ion irradiation, which has a high linear energy transfer (LET), are significantly slower than those of proton and helium ion irradiation. Mixed irradiation with carbon ions, followed by helium ions, did not have an additive effect on the DSB repair kinetics. Interestingly, the mean γ-H2AX focus size was shown to increase with LET, suggesting that the delay in repair kinetics was due to damage that is more complex. Further, the 53BP1 focus size also increased in an LET-dependent manner. Repair of DSBs, characterized by large 53BP1 foci, was a slow process within the biphasic kinetics of DSB repair, suggesting non-homologous end joining with error-prone end resection. Our data suggest that the biological effects of space radiation may be significantly influenced by the dose as well as the type of radiation exposure.
Cytosolic Release of Mitochondrial DNA and Associated cGAS Signaling Mediates Radiation-Induced Hematopoietic Injury of Mice

Abstract:Mitochondrion is an important organelle of eukaryotic cells and a critical target of ionizing radiation (IR) outside the nucleus. The biological significance and mechanism of the non-target effect originating from mitochondria have received much attention in the field of radiation biology and protection. In this study, we investigated the effect, role, and radioprotective significance of cytosolic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and its associated cGAS signaling on hematopoietic injury induced by IR in vitro culture cells and in vivo total body irradiated mice in this study. The results demonstrated that γ-ray exposure increases the release of mtDNA into the cytosol to activate cGAS signaling pathway, and the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) may contribute to IR-induced mtDNA release. VDAC1 inhibitor DIDS and cGAS synthetase inhibitor can alleviate bone marrow injury and ameliorate hematopoietic suppression induced by IR via protecting hematopoietic stem cells and adjusting subtype distribution of bone marrow cells, such as attenuating the increase of the F4/80+ macrophage proportion in bone marrow cells. The present study provides a new mechanistic explanation for the radiation non-target effect and an alternative technical strategy for the prevention and treatment of hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome.
Radiation-induced DNA damage by proton, helium and carbon ions in human fibroblast cell: Geant4-DNA and MCDS-based study

Abstract:Background: Radiation-induced DNA damages such as Single Strand Break (SSB), Double Strand Break (DSB) and Complex DSB (cDSB) are critical aspects of radiobiology with implications in radiotherapy and radiation protection applications. Materials and Methods: This study presents a thorough investigation into the effects of protons (0.5 – 100 MeV/u), helium ions (1 – 100 MeV/u) and carbon ions (5 – 480 MeV/u) on DNA of human fibroblast cells using Geant4-DNA track structure code coupled with DBSCAN algorithm and Monte Carlo Damage Simulations (MCDS) code. Geant4-DNA-based simulations consider 1 μm x 1 μm x 0.5 μm water box as the target to calculate energy deposition on event-by-event basis and the three-dimensional coordinates of the interaction location, and then DBSCAN algorithm is used to calculate yields of SSB, DSB and cDSB in human fibroblast cell. The study investigated the influence of Linear Energy Transfer (LET) of protons, helium ions and carbon ions on the yields of DNA damages. Influence of cellular oxygenation on DNA damage patterns is investigated using MCDS code. Results: The study shows that DSB and SSB yields are influenced by the LET of the particles, with distinct trends observed for different particles. The cellular oxygenation is a key factor, with anoxic cells exhibiting reduced SSB and DSB yields, underscoring the intricate relationship between cellular oxygen levels and DNA damage. The study introduced DSB/SSB ratio as an informative metric for evaluating the severity of radiation-induced DNA damage, particularly in higher LET regions. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of considering particle type, LET, and cellular oxygenation in assessing the biological effects of ionizing radiation.
Effects of generational low dose-rate 137Cs internal exposure in descendant mice

Abstract:To quantitatively investigate the effects of chronic low-dose internal exposure to Cesium-137 on DNA damage, carcinogenicity, and offspring over multiple generations. The potential genetic risk in humans was predicted based on next-generation murine mutation rates to confirm the reasonableness of the current Cesium-137 dose limits for food. Cesium-137 (100 Bq/mL) was provided in drinking water to A/J mice, facilitating chronic, low-dose, low-dose-rate internal exposure through sibling mating over 25 generations (G25). The A/J mice were compared with a control strain with the same origin ancestry (no Cesium-137 water) for DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), oxidative stress, chromosome aberrations, micronucleus test results, whole genome analysis, carcinogenicity, tumor growth rate, and immune competence. Compared to the control group, DNA DSBs and oxidative stress were significantly increased in the Cesium-137 group. However, no significant differences were observed between the groups regarding chromosome aberration, micronuclei, or the whole genome sequence mutation analysis. Although the carcinogenic rate did not differ between the groups, the rate of tumor growth was significantly suppressed in the Cesium-137 group. The anti-tumor cytokine trend in the Cesium-137 group likely contributed to this effect. No pathological or genetic effects were observed in the offspring of mice drinking water containing 100 Bq/mL Cesium-137 after G25. The contribution of low dose-rate radiation to carcinogenicity was not additive but growth-inhibitory. Although the negative data are not conclusive, these findings are deemed highly reliable.

Repair of Alpha-Particle-induced DNA Double Strand Breaks and Their Localization in Chromatin in Human Lymphocytes

Abstract:Objective To investigate the characteristics of repair of DNA double strand breaks (DSB) induced by high-LET α-particle irradiation and their relationship with chromatin structure in the G0 lymphocytes of human peripheral blood,in order to provide the experimental basis for the judgement and dose evaluation of internal α-particle radiation.Methods Peripheral whole blood were collected from four healthy adults and lymphocytes were separated.A monocellular layer of human lymphocytes attached in Mylar film were irradiated with 0 and 0.5 Gy of α-particles and the lymphocytes suspensions were irradiated with 0 and 0.5 Gy of γ-rays.The formations of γH2AX foci as a surrogate marker of DSB and Rad51 foci as a marker of homologous recombination (HR) repair and their spatial localization in chromatin structure were measured by immunofluorescence staining technique at 10 min-48 h post-irradiation.Results Linear-γH2AX foci tracks were observe at 10 min-2 h post-irradiation in lymphocytes exposed to α-particle irradiation(t =11.12,14.40,16.56,P ＜ 0.05),and almost completely disppeared at 6 h postirradiation.The frequencies of γH2AX foci peaked at 30 min after α-particle irradiation (t =51.72,P ＜0.05) and then decreased rapidly during 6 h post-irradiation (t =29.83,P ＜ 0.05).The average number of foci remained only about 16％ at 24-48 h post-irradiation.Moreover,27％ of γH2AX foci located at DAPI-bright heterochromatin region at 10 min after α-particle radiation,suggesting that the efficacy of DSB repair may be decreased.In contrast,at 10 min-48 h after γ-ray irradiation,no linear γH2AX foci track was observed and the γH2AX foci diffused randomly in nucleus and predominantly located in DAPI-weak euchromatin region.The numbers of formative and residual γH2AX foci after γ-ray irradiation were significantly less than those after α-particle radiation.During 30 min-2 h after α-particle and γ-ray irradiation,the frequencies of Rad51 foci slightly but not significantly increased in comparison with background level,and the frequencies of co-localization of Rad51 foci and γH2AX foci were only 3％-8％.Conclusions The formation of linear γH2AX foci tracks induced by high-LET α-particle irradiation in Go human lymphocyte could be used as biological indicator to estimate whether a person has been exposed to internal α-particle radiation.Prolonged persistence of residual γH2AX foci may be applicable for biological dosimetry.

Abstract:Charged particle radiation can, directly and indirectly, affect cells by breaking DNA strands. This effect includes DNA single-strand breaks (SSB) and DNA double-strand breaks (DSB), which may cause cell death and mitotic failure. Thus, using short-range charged particles such as Auger electrons (AEs) not only leads to the destruction of the target cell but also prevents the nearby healthy cells from exposing to ionizing radiation. In this study, two spherical cells (C and C 2 ) and their cell nucleus, both made of liquid water, were modeled. An atomic DNA model constructed in the Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo (MC) simulation toolkit was placed inside the nucleus of the C and C 2 cells. The number of direct and indirect SSB, DSB, and hybrid DSB (HDSB), caused by some of the most widely-used Auger electron-emitting (AEE) radionuclides, including 99m Tc, 111 In, 123 I, 125 I, and 201 Tl, distributed within different compartments of the C cell, was calculated in the C and C 2 cells, considering the distance between the surface of the two cells ranges from 0 to 5 μm. The present work aimed to investigate the biological effects of AEE radionuclides and their potential for cancer treatment through targeted radiation therapy. The results indicate the impact of 201 Tl > 125 I > 123 I > 111 In > 99m Tc on DNA damage when the target is C (first spherical cell). On the other hand, for C 2 at distances of 0 to 5 μm, the impact of 99m Tc > 123 I > 111 In > 201 Tl > 125 I on DNA damage is observed.

Abstract:Exposure to environmental ionizing radiation is prevalent, with greatest lifetime doses typically from high Linear Energy Transfer (high-LET) alpha particles via the radioactive decay of radon gas in indoor air. Particle radiation is highly genotoxic, inducing DNA damage including oxidative base lesions and DNA double strand breaks. Due to the ionization density of high-LET radiation, the consequent damage is highly clustered wherein ≥2 distinct DNA lesions occur within 1–2 helical turns of one another. These multiply-damaged sites are difficult for eukaryotic cells to resolve either quickly or accurately, resulting in the persistence of DNA damage and/or the accumulation of mutations at a greater rate per absorbed dose, relative to lower LET radiation types. The proximity of the same and different types of DNA lesions to one another is challenging for DNA repair processes, with diverse pathways often confounding or interplaying with one another in complex ways. In this context, understanding the state of the higher order chromatin compaction and arrangements is essential, as it influences the density of damage produced by high-LET radiation and regulates the recruitment and activity of DNA repair factors. This review will summarize the latest research exploring the processes by which clustered DNA damage sites are induced, detected, and repaired in the context of chromatin.

Inhomogeneous perturbation and error bounds for the stationary performance of random walks in the quarter plane

Abstract:A continuous-time random walk in the quarter plane with homogeneous transition rates is considered. Given a non-negative reward function on the state space, we are interested in the expected stationary performance. Since a direct derivation of the stationary probability distribution is not available in general, the performance is approximated by a perturbed random walk, whose transition rates on the boundaries are changed such that its stationary probability distribution is known in closed form. A perturbed random walk for which the stationary distribution is a sum of geometric terms is considered and the perturbed transition rates are allowed to be inhomogeneous. It is demonstrated that such rates can be constructed for any sum of geometric terms that satisfies the balance equations in the interior of the state space. The inhomogeneous transitions relax the pairwise-coupled structure on these geometric terms that would be imposed if only homogeneous transitions are used. An explicit expression for the approximation error bound is obtained using the Markov reward approach, which does not depend on the values of the inhomogeneous rates but only on the parameters of the geometric terms. Numerical experiments indicate that inhomogeneous perturbation can give smaller error bounds than homogeneous perturbation.

Abstract:In the case of radon exposure, the spatial distribution of deposited radioactive particles is highly inhomogeneous in the central airways. The objective of this research is to investigate the consequences of this heterogeneity regarding cellular burdens in the bronchial epithelium and to study the possible biological effects on tissue level. Applying a computational fluid dynamics program, the deposition distribution of inhaled radon daughters has been determined in a bronchial airway model for 23 minutes of work in the New Mexico uranium mine corresponding to 0.0129 WLM exposure. A numerical epithelium model based on experimental data has been utilized in order to quantify cellular hits and doses. Finally, a carcinogenesis model considering cell death induced cell cycle shortening has been applied to assess the biological responses. Computations present, that cellular dose may reach 1.5 Gy, which is several orders of magnitude higher than tissue dose. The results are in agreement with the histological finding that the uneven deposition distribution of radon progenies may lead to inhomogeneous spatial distribution of tumours in the bronchial airways. In addition, on macroscopic level, the relationship between cancer risk and radiation burden seems to be non-linear.

Abstract:The knowledge on responses of human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) to ionizing radiation exposure is important to understand mechanisms of radiation cataracts that are of concern in the field of radiation protection and radiation therapy. However, biological effects in HLECs following protracted exposure have not yet fully been explored. Here, we investigated the temporal kinetics of γ-H2AX foci as a marker for DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and cell survival in HLECs after exposure to photon beams at various dose rates (i.e., 150 kVp X-rays at 1.82, 0.1, and 0.033 Gy/min, and 137 Cs γ-rays at 0.00461 Gy/min (27.7 cGy/h) and 0.00081 Gy/min (4.9 cGy/h)), compared to those in human lung fibroblasts (WI-38). In parallel, we quantified the recovery for DSBs and cell survival using a biophysical model. The study revealed that HLECs have a lower DSB repair rate than WI-38 cells. There is no significant impact of dose rate on cell survival in both cell lines in the dose-rate range of 0.033–1.82 Gy/min. In contrast, the experimental residual γ-H2AX foci showed inverse dose rate effects (IDREs) compared to the model prediction, highlighting the importance of the IDREs in evaluating radiation effects on the ocular lens.

Abstract:Spherical cesium-bearing particles were found around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after its accident. These particles are insoluble with high specific activities. If such a particle is incorporated into the body, it is expected that the radioactive cesium contained in the particle will move as a single particulate material without being distributed throughout the body. Consequently, internal doses vary depending on the pathway of the particle in the body. Therefore, general deterministic methods for dose estimation are not applicable to the intake of small number of cesium-bearing particles. In this study, a Monte Carlo method was developed to evaluate a probability density function of internal doses for inhalation of a particulate material. In addition, a biokinetic model was constructed to consider the insolubility of the particles. Probability density functions of committed equivalent and effective doses were estimated using the constructed biokinetic model with the developed computation method. As a result, the uncertainty of the doses was very large for single particle inhalation. However, it was observed that this uncertainty decreased with increasing number of simultaneously inhaled particles. On the other hand, the consideration about the insolubility made the doses somewhat higher than those based on the general cesium model.
