Abstract:AbstractTriggering large-scale motion by imposing vibrations to a system can be encountered in many situations, from daily-life shaking of saltcellar to silo unclogging or dynamic earthquakes triggering. In the well-known situation of solid or granular friction, the acceleration of imposed vibrations has often been proposed as the governing parameter for the transition between stick-slip motion and continuous sliding. The threshold acceleration for the onset of continuous slip motion or system unjamming is usually found of the order of the gravitational acceleration. These conclusions are mostly drawn from numerical studies. Here, we investigate, in the laboratory, granular friction by shearing a layer of grains subjected to horizontal vibrations. We show that, in contrast with previous results, the quantity that controls the frictional properties is the characteristic velocity and not the acceleration, of the imposed mechanical vibrations. Thus, when the system is statically loaded, the typical acceleration of the vibrations which trigger large slip events is much smaller than the gravitational acceleration. These results may be relevant to understand dynamic earthquake triggering by small ground perturbations.

Abstract:We report results of 3D Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations aiming at investigating the role of the boundary vibration in inducing frictional weakening in sheared granular layers. We study the role of different vibration amplitudes applied at various shear stress levels, for a granular layer in the stick-slip regime and in the steady-sliding regime. Results are reported in terms of friction drops and kinetic energy release associated with frictional weakening events. We find that larger vibration amplitude induces larger frictional weakening events. The results show evidence of a threshold below which no induced frictional weakening takes place. Friction drop size is found to be dependent on the shear stress at the time of vibration. A significant increase in the ratio between the number of slipping contacts to the number of sticking contacts in the granular layer is observed for large vibration amplitudes. These vibration-induced contact rearrangements enhance particle mobilization and induces a friction drop and kinetic energy release. This observation provides some insight into the grain-scale mechanisms of frictional weakening by boundary vibration in a dense sheared granular layer. In addition to characterizing the basic physics of vibration induced shear weakening, we are attempting to understand how a fault fails in the earth under seismic wave forcing. This is the well know phenomenon of dynamic earthquake triggering. We believe that the granular physics are key to this understanding.

Abstract:Mechanical vibrations are known to affect frictional sliding and the associated stick-slip patterns causing sometimes a drastic reduction of the friction force. This issue is relevant for applications in nanotribology and to understand earthquake triggering by small dynamic perturbations . We study the dynamics of repulsive particles confined between a horizontally driven top plate and a vertically oscillating bottom plate. Our numerical results show a suppression of the high dissipative stick-slip regime in a well defined range of frequencies that depends on the vibrating amplitude, the normal applied load, the system inertia and the damping constant. We propose a theoretical explanation of the numerical results and derive a phase diagram indicating the region of parameter space where friction is suppressed. Our results allow to define better strategies for the mechanical control of friction.

Abstract:We study the frictional behavior of small contacts as those realized in the atomic force microscope and other experimental setups, in the framework of generalized Prandtl-Tomlinson models. Particular attention is paid to mechanisms that generate velocity weakening, namely a decreasing average friction force with the relative sliding <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://velocity.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> mechanisms studied model the possibility of viscous relaxation, or aging effects in the contact. It is found that, in addition to producing velocity weakening, these mechanisms can also produce aftershocks at sufficiently low sliding velocities. This provides a remarkable analogy at the microscale, of friction properties at the macroscale, where aftershocks and velocity weakening are two fundamental features of seismic phenomena.

Abstract:Dynamic fluidization behavior has been generally identified as a result of irreversible grain sliding and dominates the strain time evolution in granular materials in presence of vibrations. From vibration-induced strain evolution experiments performed in a triaxial configuration, we provide direct evidences that fluidity of granular packing is enhanced with vibration amplitude and frequency within low frequency dynamics. It is verified that a simple fluidity model based on standard Maxwell viscoelastic rheology can be used to account for the strain time evolution in presence of low frequency vibrations. The proposed configuration reveals that the frequency has a completely contrary effect on aging and rejuvenation of the granular system comparing with vibration amplitude. Weakening of effective viscosity induced by increasing vibration amplitude and frequency is well elucidated by a statistical model, in which both parameters considering potential energy stored in the system and distribution of grain-contact orientations are introduced.

Abstract:Significance The macroscopic friction of particulate materials often weakens as flow rate is increased. This property is responsible for important intermittent phenomena in geophysics, including earthquakes and landslides. However, it is not understood even in simple granular materials, where it is responsible for hysteresis of the angle of repose. Here we argue that, for aerial granular flows, velocity weakening is an emergent collective property induced by endogenous mechanical noise. Our theory rationalizes previously unexplained observations, and generates experimentally testable predictions. At a microscopic level, it predicts that several microscopic quantities do not have a hard-particle limit, and characterizes their scaling behavior near jamming, which we confirm numerically.

Abstract:Slip-friction of faults and joint fractures is of great significance in the study of rock mass structural engineering stability and earthquake generation mechanism. Laboratory friction experiment is a great method to determine the frictional strength of rock interfaces. A large number of low-velocity experiments has been conducted to explain the friction mechanism in the regime of direct shear mode. However, the friction mechanism in the regime of vibration mode has rarely been studied. To study the slip-friction mechanism of rock interface under the vibration mode, a dynamic friction experiment with two blocks on a vibrating platform was performed. The experiments were conducted with hard granite samples at a vibration frequency of 1–10Hz, vibration amplitude 0.5–5mm, and normal stress of 0.5–4.5MPa. The results demonstrate that slip- and frequency-weakening phenomena were noticed and the general quantitative relationship of the three characteristic friction parameters is μ 3 > μ 1 > μ 2. Moreover, the normal stress has a significant effect on the weakening degree of the friction coefficient, and the change in the surface roughness may correlate with the change in the weakening degree.
The physics of fault friction: Insights from experiments on simulated gouges at low shearing velocities

Abstract:Abstract. The strength properties of fault rocks at shearing rates spanning the transition from crystal-plastic flow to frictional slip play a central role in determining the distribution of crustal stress, strain and seismicity in tectonically-active regions. We review experimental and microphysical modelling work aimed at elucidating the processes that control the transition from pervasive ductile flow of fault rock to rate-and-state dependent frictional (RSF) slip and to runaway rupture, carried out at Utrecht University in the past two or so decades. We address shear experiments on simulated gouges composed of calcite, halite-phyllosilicate mixtures, and phyllosilicate-quartz mixtures, performed under laboratory conditions spanning the brittle-ductile transition. With increasing shear rate (or decreasing temperature), the results consistently show transitions from (1) stable, velocity(v)-strengthening to potentially unstable, v-weakening behavior, and (2) back to v-strengthening. Sample microstructures show that the first transition, seen at low shear rates and/or high temperatures, represents a switch from pervasive, fully ductile deformation to frictional sliding, involving dilatant granular flow in localized shear bands, where intergranular slip is incompletely accommodated by creep of individual mineral grains. A recent microphysical model, treating fault rock deformation as controlled by a competition between rate-sensitive (diffusional or crystal-plastic) deformation of individual grains and rate-insensitive sliding interactions between grains (granular flow), predicts both transitions well. Unlike classical RSF approaches, this model quantitatively reproduces a wide range of (transient) frictional behaviors using input parameters with direct physical meaning. When implemented in numerical codes for crustal fault-slip, it offers a single, unified framework for understanding slip patch nucleation and growth to critical (seismogenic) dimensions, and for simulating the entire seismic cycle.

Abstract:Seismic stress drop is one of the most important earthquake source parameters, playing a key role in elastic energy release and in scaling relations for seismic moment and fault length. While stress drop does not scale systematically with earthquake size, it varies greatly within seismic catalogs and there is much broad interest in understanding how such variations relate to fault zone properties. Here, we address connections between stress drop and fault zone properties via laboratory experiments that investigate the role of normal stress and layer thickness during frictional sliding. We sheared granular layers at normal stresses from 4 to 22 MPa and document both elastic and inelastic processes that couple with layer dilation to determine the granular fragility and stress drop during stick-slip failure. Stick-slip stress drop scales directly with fault normal stress and inversely with layer thickness. Thicker layers exhibit, greater dilation during shear loading, however shear driven dilatant volume strain is independent of layer thickness. We posit that force chains form rapidly after a dynamic slip event and that bulk inelastic creep occurs via formation and destruction of force chains, interparticle slip, and rolling. Stick-slip recurrence time and stress drop vary with fault normal stress and stiffness, which increases with shear strain, consistent with a model in which stiffness increases as porosity decreases and fault zone density increases. We propose a micromechanical model that accounts for force chains and spectator regions where granular processes are dominated by inelastic slip. We document the role of elastic and inelastic processes during three stages of the stick-slip cycle and show how these change systematically as a function of normal stress and layer thickness. Our work shows that dilation during shear loading contributes to frictional strength via volume strain and that apparent friction scales inversely with the granular thinning ratio.
Seasonal slow slip in landslides as a window into the frictional rheology of creeping shear zones

Abstract:Whether Earth materials exhibit frictional creep or catastrophic failure is a crucial but unresolved problem in predicting landslide and earthquake hazards. Here, we show that field-scale observations of sliding velocity and pore water pressure at two creeping landslides are explained by velocity-strengthening friction, in close agreement with laboratory measurements on similar materials. This suggests that the rate-strengthening friction commonly measured in clay-rich materials may govern episodic slow slip in landslides, in addition to tectonic faults. Further, our results show more generally that transient slow slip can arise in velocity-strengthening materials from modulation of effective normal stress through pore pressure fluctuations. This challenges the idea that episodic slow slip requires a narrow range of transitional frictional properties near the stability threshold, or pore pressure feedbacks operating on initially unstable frictional slip.

Abstract:We study the effect of viscoelastic dynamics on the frictional properties of a (mean field) spring-block system pulled on a rough surface by an external drive. When the drive moves at constant velocity V, two dynamical regimes are observed: at fast driving, above a critical threshold Vc, the system slides at the drive velocity and displays a friction force with velocity weakening. Below Vc the steady sliding becomes unstable and a stick-slip regime sets in. In the slide-hold-slide driving protocol, a peak of the friction force appears after the hold time and its amplitude increases with the hold duration. These observations are consistent with the frictional force encoded phenomenologically in the rate-and-state equations. Our model gives a microscopical basis for such macroscopic description.

Abstract:Abstract The potential of faults to show earthquake‐generating slip instabilities depends not only on the intrinsic frictional properties of the fault zone, but also on the elasticity of the surrounding material. A velocity‐weakening fault is expected to show increasingly unstable frictional behavior with decreasing local elastic stiffness around the fault zone. Fault zone roughness can cause slip in the shear direction to be accompanied by fault‐normal movement, modulated by fault‐normal elastic properties, however these effects are poorly understood. Here, we systematically vary the stiffness surrounding the fault in both the shear‐parallel and fault‐normal directions, to investigate the origin of slip instabilities and changes in friction constitutive properties. We confirm the transition from stable sliding through slow slip to stick‐slip due to reduced fault‐parallel stiffness, and that the occurrence of different types of slip events can be explained by the ratio between shear and critical stiffness. In contrast, reducing the fault‐normal stiffness produces stick‐slip instabilities under conditions where the conventional critical stiffness criterion predicts stable sliding, and does not produce transitional slow slip events. Our data suggest that: (a) the stability criterion for frictional slip should be modified to incorporate fault‐normal stiffness, and (b) the unexpected slip instabilities may represent wrinkle‐like slip pulses, possibly due to a stiffness asymmetry introduced by lowering the fault normal stiffness on one side of the fault. This implies that earthquakes may occur when the fault‐normal stiffness, or bulk modulus for natural faults, is decreased and/or asymmetric across the fault zone, both of which may be common in nature.

Abstract:Considering a 3D sheared granular layer through a discrete element modeling, it is well known the rolling resistance influences the macro friction coefficient. Even if the rolling resistance role has been deeply investigated previously because it is commonly used to represent the shape and the roughness of the grains, the rolling viscous damping coefficient is still not studied. This parameter is rarely used or only to dissipate the energy and to converge numerically. This paper revisits the physical role of those coefficients with a parametric study of the rolling friction and the rolling damping at different shear speeds and different confinement pressures. It has been observed the damping coefficient induces a frictional weakening. Indeed, competition between the rolling resistance and the rolling damping occurs. Angular resistance aims to avoid grains rolling, decreasing the difference between the angular velocities of grains. Whereas, angular damping acts in the opposite, avoiding a change in the difference between the angular velocities of grains. In consequence, grains stay rolling and the sample toughness decreases. This effect must be considered to not overestimate the frictional response of a granular layer.

Abstract:Frictional sliding along grain boundaries in brittle shear zones can result in the fragmentation of individual grains, which ultimately can impact slip dynamics. During deformation at small scales, stick–slip motion can occur between grains when existing force chains break due to grain rearrangement or failure, resulting in frictional sliding of granular material. The rearrangement of the grains leads to dilation of the granular package, reducing the shear stress and subsequently leading to slip. Here, we conduct physical experiments employing HydroOrbs, an elasto-plastic material, to investigate grain comminution in granular media under simple shear conditions. Our findings demonstrate that the degree of grain comminution is dependent on both the normal force and the size of the grains. Using the experimental setup, we benchmark Discrete Element Method (DEM) numerical models, which are capable of simulating the movement, rotation, and fracturing of elasto-plastic grains subjected to simple shear. The DEM models successfully replicate both grain comminution patterns and horizontal force fluctuations observed in our physical experiments. They show that increasing normal forces correlate with higher horizontal forces and more fractured grains. The ability of our DEM models to accurately reproduce experimental results opens up new avenues for investigating various parameter spaces that may not be accessible through traditional laboratory experiments, for example, in assessing how internal friction or cohesion affect deformation in granular systems.

Crack-Like Processes Governing the Onset of Frictional Slip

Abstract:We perform real-time measurements of the net contact area between two blocks of like material at the onset of frictional slip. We show that the process of interface detachment, which immediately precedes the inception of frictional sliding, is governed by three different types of detachment fronts. These crack-like detachment fronts differ by both their propagation velocities and by the amount of net contact surface reduction caused by their passage. The most rapid fronts propagate at intersonic velocities but generate a negligible reduction in contact area across the interface. Sub-Rayleigh fronts are crack-like modes which propagate at velocities up to the Rayleigh wave speed, VR, and give rise to an approximate 10% reduction in net contact area. The most efficient contact area reduction (~20%) is precipitated by the passage of slow detachment fronts. These fronts propagate at anomalously slow velocities, which are over an order of magnitude lower than VR yet orders of magnitude higher than other characteristic velocity scales such as either slip or loading velocities. Slow fronts are generated, in conjunction with intersonic fronts, by the sudden arrest of sub-Rayleigh fronts. No overall sliding of the interface occurs until either of the slower two fronts traverses the entire interface, and motion at the leading edge of the interface is initiated. Slip at the trailing edge of the interface accompanies the motion of both the slow and sub-Rayleigh fronts. We might expect these modes to be important in both fault nucleation and earthquake dynamics.

Long Term Friction: from Stick-Slip to Stable Sliding

Abstract:We have devised an original laboratory experiment where we investigate the frictional behaviour of a single crystal salt slider over a large number of deformation cycles. Because of its physical properties, salt, a surrogate for natural faults, allows for friction and plastic deformation and pressure solution creep to be efficient on the same timescale. During the same experiment, we observe a continuous change of the frictional behaviour of the slider under constant conditions of stiffness, temperature and loading velocity. The stick-slip regime is progressively vanishing, eventually reaching the stable sliding regime. Concomitantly, the contact interface, observed under the microscope, develops a striated morphology with contact asperities increase in length and width, arguing for an increase in the critical slip distance dc. Complementary experiments including velocity jumps show that the frictional parameters of the rate and state friction law, a and b, progressively vanish with the cumulative slip. In our experimental conditions, the ultimate stage of friction is therefore rate and state independent.

Abstract:We propose an elasto-plastic inspired friction model which incorporates interfacial stiffness. Steady state sliding friction is characterized by a generic nonmonotonic behavior, including both velocity weakening and strengthening branches. In 1D and upon the application of sideway loading, we demonstrate the existence of transient cracklike fronts whose velocity is independent of sound speed, which we propose to be analogous to the recently discovered slow interfacial rupture fronts. Most importantly, the properties of these transient inhomogeneously loaded fronts are determined by steady state front solutions at the {\em minimum} of the sliding friction law, implying the existence of a new velocity scale and a "forbidden gap" of rupture velocities. We highlight the role played by interfacial stiffness and supplement our analysis with 2D scaling arguments.

Abstract:Even the most regular stick-slip frictional sliding is always stochastic, with irregularity in both the intervals between slip events and the sizes of the associated stress drops. Applying small-amplitude oscillations to the shear force, we show, experimentally and theoretically, that the stick-slip periods synchronize. We further show that this phase-locking is related to the inhibition of slow rupture modes which forces a transition to fast rupture, providing a possible mechanism for observed remote triggering of earthquakes. Such manipulation of collective modes may be generally relevant to extended nonlinear systems driven near to criticality.
