Abstract:The health effects associated with human exposure to airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have been linked to the ability of PM2.5 to facilitate the production of excess cellular reactive oxygen species (oxidative potential). Concern about the adverse human health impacts of PM2.5 has led to the increased use of indoor air cleaners to improve indoor air quality, which can be an important environment for PM2.5 exposure. However, the degree to which the oxidative potential of indoor and personal PM2.5 can be influenced by an indoor air cleaner remains unclear. In this study we enrolled 43 children with physician diagnosed asthma in suburban Shanghai, China and collected two paired-sets of 48-h indoor, outdoor, and personal PM2.5 exposure samples. One set of samples was collected under "real filtration" during which a functioning air cleaner was installed in the child's bedroom, and the other ("false filtration") with an air cleaner without internal filters. The PM2.5 samples were characterized by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy for elements, and by an alveolar macrophage assay for oxidative potential. The sources of metals contributing to our samples were determined by the EPA Positive Matrix Factorization model. The oxidative potential was lower under real filtration compared to sham for indoor (median real/sham ratio: 0.260) and personal exposure (0.813) samples. Additionally, the sources of elements in PM2.5 that were reduced indoors and personal exposure samples by the air cleaner (e.g. regional aerosol and roadway emissions) were found by univariate multiple regression models to be among those contributing to the oxidative potential of the samples. An IQR increase in the regional aerosol and roadway emissions sources was associated with a 107% (95% CI: 80.1-138%) and 38.1% (17.6-62.1%) increase in measured oxidative potential respectively. Our results indicate that indoor air cleaners can reduce the oxidative potential of indoor and personal exposure to PM2.5, which may lead to improved human health.

Abstract:In many developing regions with poor air quality, the use of air filtration devices to clean indoor air is growing rapidly. In this study, we collected indoor, outdoor and personal exposure filter-based samples of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with both properly operating, and sham air cleaners in six Beijing residences from July 24th to August 17th, 2016. Mass concentrations of PM2.5 and several health relevant components of PM2.5 including organic carbon, elemental carbon, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and 21 selected metals, were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of air cleaners. The effect of air purification on PM2.5 reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity, a metric of the oxidative potential of the aerosol, was also evaluated. The average indoor PM2.5 concentration during true filtration was 8.47μg/m3, compared to 49.0μg/m3 during sham filtration; thus, air cleaners can significantly reduce the indoor PM2.5 concentration to well below WHO guideline levels and significantly lower all major components of PM2.5. However, the utility of air cleaners in reducing overall personal exposure to PM2.5 and its components was marginal in this study: the average personal exposure PM2.5 concentration was 67.8 and 51.1μg/m3 during true and sham filtration respectively, and it is likely due to the activity patterns of the subjects. Short-term exposure contributions from environments with high PM2.5 concentrations, including exposure to traffic related emissions as well as uncharacterized indoor microenvironments, likely add substantially to the total PM2.5 exposure burden. The toxicity assay indicates that the air cleaners can also significantly reduce ROS activity in the indoor environment; however, this decrease did not translate to a reduction in personal exposure. Elemental carbon, lead, and arsenic were well-correlated with the ROS activity, thus adding to the knowledge base of drivers for ROS activity.
Children’s microenvironmental exposure to PM 2.5 and ozone and the impact of indoor air filtration

Abstract:Background In highly polluted urban areas, personal exposure to PM 2.5 and O 3 occur daily in various microenvironments. Identifying which microenvironments contribute most to exposure can pinpoint effective exposure reduction strategies and mitigate adverse health impacts. Methods This work uses real-time sensors to assess the exposures of children with asthma ( N = 39) in Shanghai, quantifying microenvironmental exposure to PM 2.5 and O 3 . An air cleaner was deployed in participants’ bedrooms where we hypothesized exposure could be most efficiently reduced. Monitoring occurred for two 48-h periods: one with bedroom filtration (portable air cleaner with HEPA and activated carbon filters) and the other without. Results Children spent 91% of their time indoors with the majority spent in their bedroom (47%). Without filtration, the bedroom and classroom environments were the largest contributors to PM 2.5 exposure. With filtration, bedroom PM 2.5 exposure was reduced by 75% (45% of total exposure). Although filtration status did not impact O 3 , the largest contribution of O 3 exposure also came from the bedroom. Conclusions Actions taken to reduce bedroom PM 2.5 and O 3 concentrations can most efficiently reduce total exposure. As real-time pollutant monitors become more accessible, similar analyses can be used to evaluate new interventions and optimize exposure reductions for a variety of populations.

The more modest reductions in personal exposure and high contribution of outdoor PM(2.5)to indoor concentrations highlight the need to reduce outdoor PM(2.5)and/or to clean indoor air in multiple locations. Indoor O(3)concentrations were generally low (mean = 8 +/- 4 ppb), and no significant difference was seen by filtration status. Exposure Levels, Sources, and Health Risks of Heavy Metal Components of PM2.5 in Housewives in Rural Shanghai

Abstract:To investigate exposure characteristics and potential health risk of PM2.5-bound heavy metals in housewives in rural areas, 265 personal exposure samples from 143 subjects were collected in the Songjiang district, Shanghai from February 2017 to June 2018. Mass concentrations of 13 elements in PM2.5 were determined by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (ED-XRF). The sources of heavy metal components in PM2.5 were analyzed using positive matrix factorization (PMF). The inhalation health risks of exposure to Ni, V, Cr, Mn, As, and Pb were analyzed using the US EPA health risk assessment model. The results showed that the average concentration of personal exposure to PM2.5 was 40.61 μg·m-3 in housewives, which was higher than the concentration at peripheral monitoring stations. The carcinogenic risks of Cr(Ⅵ)and As exceeded the acceptable risk level (10-6). The non-carcinogenic risks of V, Cr(Ⅵ), Mn, Ni, and As were all below the safety threshold, while the total non-carcinogenic risks of these five elements were higher than the safety threshold (>1). The results of PMF indicated that resuspended dust and indoor dust(43.8%), the metallurgy industry(34.6%), coal combustion(14.5%), and fossil-fuel combustion(7.2%)were the major sources of ten elements (Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, As, and Pb) in PM2.5. Based on the results of health risk assessment of pollution sources, control measures on the metallurgy industry and fossil-fuel combustion should be further strengthened.
Preschool children health impacts from indoor exposure to PM2.5 and metals

Abstract:To better understand the relation between children health and indoor air quality, we measured the concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and 11 metals (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, antimony, selenium, and zinc) from air samples taken during both winter and spring, and focused on urban and rural area kindergartens of the Upper Silesia Region, Poland, typified by the use of fossil fuels for power and heat purposes. We combined related inhalation intake estimates for children and health effects using separate dose-response approaches for PM2.5 and metals. Results show that impacts on children from exposure to PM2.5 was 7.5 min/yr, corresponding to 14 μDALY/yr (DALY: disability-adjusted life years) with 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.3-164 min/yr, which is approximately 10 times lower than cumulative impacts from exposure to the metal components in the PM2.5 fraction of indoor air (median 76 min/yr; CI: 0.2-4.5 × 103 min/yr). Highest metal-related health impacts were caused by exposure to hexavalent chromium. The average combined cancer and non-cancer effects for hexavalent chromium were 55 min/yr, corresponding to 104 μDALY/yr, with CI: 0.5 to 8.0 × 104 min/yr. Health impacts on children varied by season and across urban and rural sites, both as functions of varying PM2.5 metal compositions influenced by indoor and outdoor emission sources. Our study demonstrates the need to consider indoor environments for evaluating health impacts of children, and can assist decision makers to focus on relevant impact reduction and indoor air quality improvement.

Abstract:Although Chinese residents spend the majority of their time indoors, pollutants in the indoor environment have not been studied as extensively as their outdoor counterparts. This is especially true of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), many of which are associated with adverse health outcomes and have indoor sources. For this study, 20 homes with asthmatic children were recruited from the suburbs of Shanghai, China. This study explored pollutants and the impacts of air filtration on pollutant levels. Air purifiers were installed twice, for two-week periods, in the child’s bedroom – once with all levels of filtration (pre-filter, HEPA filter, carbon filter) and again with only a coarse pre-filter. During both periods, indoor and outdoor samples were collected simultaneously on Tenax and DNPH tubes in the early morning using pump packages developed at Duke University. Of the 900+ compounds detected, 117 were detected in 10 or more samples. Total VOCs were higher indoors than outdoors in most homes under both conditions (median values [in mg m-3] - sham, in/out: 235/59; true, in/out: 119 /77). There was a significant reduction in indoor-outdoor ratios during true compared to sham filtration indicating a potential benefit of filtration (median reduction: 36%, range: -224%, 96%). Non-negative matrix factorization was used to identify groupings of compounds (features) illustrative of sources. Of the features identified, two indicate outdoor sources with certain compounds detected in most outdoor samples but seldom detected indoors. The other three features point to indoor sources. Preliminary analyses indicate compounds detected predominantly indoors may relate to cleaning or personal care products, although analysis is ongoing. This work provides new insight to potentially harmful compounds in Chinese homes, as most previous studies have focused on assessment of total VOCs or select, well-characterized VOCs including BTEX and formaldehyde.

Abstract:The urbanization and industrialization in China is accompanied by bad air quality, and the prevalence of asthma in Chinese children has been increasing in recent years. To investigate the associations between ambient PM2.5 levels and asthmatic and allergic diseases or symptoms in preschool children in China, we assigned PM2.5 exposure data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project to 205 kindergartens at a spatial resolution of 0.1° × 0.1° in six cities in China (Shanghai, Nanjing, Chongqing, Changsha, Urumqi, and Taiyuan). A hierarchical multiple logistical regression model was applied to analyze the associations between kindergarten-level PM2.5 exposure and individual-level outcomes of asthmatic and allergic symptoms. The individual-level variables, including gender, age, family history of asthma and allergic diseases, breastfeeding, parental smoking, indoor dampness, interior decoration pollution, household annual income, and city-level variable-annual temperature were adjusted. A total of 30,759 children (average age 4.6 years, 51.7% boys) were enrolled in this study. Apart from family history, indoor dampness, and decoration as predominant risk factors, we found that an increase of 10 μg/m3 of the annual PM2.5 was positively associated with the prevalence of allergic rhinitis by an odds ratio (OR) of 1.20 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.11, 1.29) and diagnosed asthma by OR of 1.10 (95% CI 1.03, 1.18). Those who lived in non-urban (vs. urban) areas were exposed to more severe indoor air pollution arising from biomass combustion and had significantly higher ORs between PM2.5 and allergic rhinitis and current rhinitis. Our study suggested that long-term exposure to PM2.5 might increase the risks of asthmatic and allergic diseases or symptoms in preschool children in China. Compared to those living in urban areas, children living in suburban or rural areas had a higher risk of PM2.5 exposure.

Abstract:Air pollution in China is an ongoing concern, with subsets of the population (e.g., asthmatic children) especially susceptible to the associated health effects. In addition, people spend the majority of their time indoors, where pollutant composition may differ from the better characterized ambient environment. Although volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present health risks and have high concentrations indoors, their sources have not been thoroughly quantified in typical homes in suburban China. Similarly lacking is an understanding of how well a purifier with high efficiency particulate air and activated carbon filters can remove VOCs in a real-world setting in China. In this study, we a) quantified total VOCs (TVOC) and 900 + individual VOCs in 20 homes in China, b) identified potential sources of VOCs, and c) evaluated impacts of filtration. We used non-negative matrix factorization, a variable reduction technique, to identify sources. TVOC and individual compounds had higher concentrations indoors than outdoors (mean [range] indoors, filtration with pre-filter only: 302 [56-793] mu g m(-3); outdoors, entire study: 92 [26-629] mu g m(-3)), indicating prevalent sources indoors. Many compounds detected have not, to our knowledge, been measured in homes in China. Some compounds (e.g., octanal, heptanal, alpha-cedrene) were specific to the indoor environment, a few were ubiquitous (e.g., acetaldehyde, formaldehyde), and others were detected infrequently. These compounds may originate from consumer products, solvents, vehicle emissions, a hexane source, wooden products, and cooking. Filtration may improve air quality indoors by lowering concentrations of some VOCs, and, specifically, contributions related to solvents and consumer products. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Exposure to VOCs causes a variety of adverse health effects, with much of the exposure occurring at home during sleep. The use of an air cleaner maybe an effective and convenient way to reduce associated exposures and health risks. Studies about the impacts of air cleaner on VOCs are limited. The main objective of this paper was to assess the inhalation health risks that toxic VOCs present during nighttime sleep and to estimate the removal effectiveness of an indoor air cleaner on these VOCs. Asthmatic children, who are especially vulnerable to the detrimental effects of air pollutants, were recruited and the VOC concentrations in their bedrooms were measured during two periods -once with a true air cleaner and once with a sham air cleaner. Among the toxic VOCs quantified, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and toluene had the highest concentrations (median: 18.0, 14.0 and 12.1 mu g/m(3), respectively) in the bedrooms. Health risk assessments were conducted to identify compounds of greatest concern. During nighttime sleep, 7 VOCs presented inhalation cancer risk above the acceptable risk (1 x 10(-6)), 4 VOCs exceeded the non-cancer risk threshold (1) in most of the homes tested. The results indicate that the use of an air cleaner in residences may lead to significant reductions in VOC concentrations indoors, but even with this reduction, the associated health risks are still of concern. This study highlights the need for reductions in toxic VOCs at home, points to the imminent need for improvements in control of VOC sources.
Toxic metals in outdoor/indoor airborne PM2.5 in port city of Northern, China: Characteristics, sources, and personal exposure risk assessment

Abstract:Outdoor and indoor PM2.5 samples were simultaneously collected over four seasons (2017–2018) in Caofeidian, China, and analyzed for 15 elements to investigate the characteristics, sources, and health risks of PM2.5-bound metals. Source-specific PM2.5-bound metals were analyzed using positive matrix factorization, combined with the conditional probability function and potential source contribution function model. The health risks were evaluated using the health risk assessment model, which included the exposure parameters of indoor and outdoor activities of Chinese residents. The annual median of PM2.5 concentrations (89.68 μg/m3) and total metals (2.67 μg/m3) from the outdoor samples significantly surpassed that of the indoor samples (51.56 μg/m3) and total metals (1.51 μg/m3) (P < 0.05). In addition, the indoor/outdoor concentration ratios indicated that most indoor metals mainly originated from outdoor emission sources. In the annual analysis of PM2.5-bound metal sources, this study identified five metal sources: coal combustion, resuspended dust, traffic emissions, fuel combustion sources, and industrial sources, among which industry sources (36.6%) contributed the most. The non-carcinogenic risks of metals for adults (2.81) and children (2.80) all exceed the acceptable non-carcinogenic risk level (1). The non-carcinogenic risk of Mn (1.46 for children, 1.48 for adults) was a key factor in the total non-carcinogenic risk. The total carcinogenic risk of metals for children (3.75×10-5) was above the acceptable level (1.0×10−6) but within the tolerant limit (1.0×10−4), and that for adults (1.48×10-4) was above the tolerant limit. The lifetime carcinogenic risk of Cr6+ had the highest proportion of the total carcinogenic risk for children (87.5%) and adults (87.8%). Our results revealed that both adults and children suffered carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks from the PM2.5-bound metals in Caofeidian. The corresponding emission control measures of metals in atmosphere should be considered.

However, few studies have been conducted on the multi-seasonal characteristics of indoor PM2.5 and its metallic composition in China. To fill this research gap, we selected a playground and classroom at the Nanjing Foreign Language School as outdoor and indoor sample sites, respectively. Samples were collected with a portable particulate monitor for four seasons (2015-2016) to obtain real-time PM2.5 records and were further analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to characterize seven typical metallic elements. Considerable seasonal variability was observed in outdoor PM2.5 levels. The highest real-time outdoor PM2.5 mass concentrations were observed in winter (148.6 +/- 52.3 mu g/m(3)), and the lowest was observed in summer (15.1 +/- 6.6 mu g/m(3)). Due to the protective effects of the enclosed system, the indoor PM2.5 levels in the classroom did not synchronously vary with the outdoor levels, except in autumn. This result was inconsistent with prior findings regarding the indoor-outdoor relationships at urban residences and might be associated with unique characteristics of indoor sources in classrooms, which highlights the importance of this study. Moreover, indoor-sourcing PM2.5 had lower metallic compositions than outdoor-originating PM2.5. Pb was the dominant metal component in both indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in all seasons with the range of 14.93-109.14 ng/m(3). Overall, metal contents in Nanjing were lower than other Chinese cities; however, the government cannot neglect the associated dangers because China has relatively lax environmental quality standards.
Personal Exposure to PM 2.5 Oxidative Potential in Association with Pulmonary Pathophysiologic Outcomes in Children with Asthma

Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with a higher oxidative potential has been thought to be more detrimental to pulmonary health. We aim to investigate the associations between personal exposure to PM2.5 oxidative potential and pulmonary outcomes in asthmatic children. We measured each of the 43 asthmatic children 4 times for airway mechanics, lung function, airway inflammation, and asthma symptom scores. Coupling measured indoor and outdoor concentrations of PM2.5 mass, constituents, and oxidative potential with individual time–activity data, we calculated 24 h average personal exposures 0–3 days prior to a health outcome measurement. We found that increases in daily personal exposure to PM2.5 oxidative potential were significantly associated with increased small, large, and total airway resistance, increased airway impedance, decreased lung function, and worsened scores of individual asthma symptoms and the total symptom score. Among the PM2.5 constituents, organic matters largely of indoor origin contributed the greatest to PM2.5 oxidative potential. Abstract:Background: Ambient particulate chemical constituents have been associated with adverse cardiopulmonary health effects. However, specific pollution sources behind the cardiopulmonary health effects of ambient particles are uncertain. Objective: We examined the cardiopulmonary health effects of fine particles (PM2.5) from different pollution sources in Beijing, China among a panel of 40 healthy university students. Methods: Study subjects were examined for a series of cardiopulmonary health indicators including circulating biomarkers, blood pressure and pulmonary function over 6 months before and after relocating from a suburban campus to an urban campus with changing air pollution levels and contents. Daily ambient PM2.5 mass samples were collected over the study and measured for 29 chemical constituents in the laboratory. Source appointment for ambient PM2.5 was performed using USEPA Positive Matrix Factorization 3.0, and mixed-effects models were used to estimate the cardiopulmonary effects associated with source-specific PM2.5 concentrations. Results: Seven PM2.5 sources were identified as traffic emissions, coal combustion, secondary sulfate/nitrate, metallurgical emission, dust/soil, industry, and secondary organic aerosol. Ambient PM2.5 in the suburban campus had larger contributions from secondary sulfate/nitrate (41.8%) and metallurgical emission (0.7%), whereas PM2.5 in the urban campus had larger contributions from traffic emissions (13.0%-16.3%) and coal combustion (21.0%-30.7%). Potential key sources were identified for PM2.5 effects on inflammatory biomarkers (secondary sulfate/nitrate and dust/soil), blood pressure (coal combustion and metallurgical emission), and pulmonary function (dust/soil and industry). Conclusion: Ambient PM2.5 in Beijing suburban and urban areas has two distinct patterns of source contributions, and PM2.5 from different sources may play important roles on different aspects of PM2.5-related cardiopulmonary health effects.

Abstract:Using air cleaners is an intervention to reduce exposure to indoor air pollutants, such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) for health benefits. However, neither the cost-effectiveness nor the optimal PM2.5 at which an air cleaner should be turned on (instantaneous threshold) has been determined. This study provided a cost-effective analysis to find the best placement of air cleaners in multizone residences (including bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens) and classrooms. We used the coefficient of economic-benefit (COE) and net economic-benefit (NE) to evaluate health benefits (HB) and control costs (CC) under six different intervention scenarios. The results show that the most cost-effective intervention is to use the air cleaners in the bedrooms in residences and that controlling the PM2.5 concentrations in the entire residence is not cost-effective. We also found that air cleaners are cost-effective in classrooms of all 335 cities. The optimal instantaneous thresholds of PM2.5 concentration are 5-15 mu g/m3 in bedrooms and 15-25 mu g/m3 in classrooms for most cities. This study can provide a foundation for determining the optimal control strategies for indoor air quality to improve population health in China and other developing countries with serious air pollution.

Abstract:Background: The importance of airway mechanics has been increasingly recognized in pediatric asthma. However, no studies have examined responses of airway mechanics to air pollution exposure in asthmatic children. Methods: In this panel study involving indoor air filtration manipulation that created a large gradient of personal exposure to PM2.5, the airway mechanics and lung function of 43 asthmatic children 5-13 years old in a suburb of Shanghai were measured four times within 3 consecutive months. Concentrations of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 and ozone were coupled with individual time-activity data to calculate personal exposures. Linear mixed effects models were used to examine the relationships of personal exposure with indicators of airway mechanics and lung function, respectively. Results: An interquartile range (IQR) increase in 24-hour average PM2.5 personal exposure (30.3 mu g/m(3)) in the prior day was associated with significant increases in small airway resistance (R-5-R-20) of 15.8%, total airway resistance (R-5) of 6.3%, and airway inflammation (FeNO) of 9.6%. These associations were stronger in children with lower blood eosinophil counts (< 450/mu L). No significant associations were found between personal PM2.5 exposure and lung function. Low-level ozone exposure (daily maximum 8-hour exposure range 1.1-56.4 ppb) was not significantly associated with any of the outcomes. Conclusion: Changes in personal PM2.5 exposure, partly enhanced by air filtration, were associated with significant changes in airway resistance and inflammation in children with asthma. These findings suggest the importance of reducing PM2.5 exposure, via personal air quality management, in improving airflow limitation in the airways, especially the small airways.

Abstract:In order to study the pollution characteristics, sources, and health risks of heavy metals in urban atmospheric PM2.5, samples were collected in Huangshi City from June 2021 to May 2022. The contents of 16 kinds of metal elements were analyzed by XRF, and the pollution degree and sources of elements were analyzed by the enrichment factor method, correlation analysis, and cluster analysis. The health risk of heavy metal elements was evaluated by the USEPA health risk assessment model. The results of enrichment factor analysis show that the metal elements carried by PM2.5 were affected by human emissions except for Ti. Heavy metals mainly come from industrial sources, motor vehicle sources, mixed combustion sources, and dust sources, according to correlation analysis and cluster analysis. Mn had a non-carcinogenic risk to children, and the non-carcinogenic risk of other elements to the human body was generally acceptable. The carcinogenic risks of Cr, As, Cd, and Co exceeded the acceptable carcinogenic risk threshold (10−6 ~10−4), and there were potential carcinogenic risks.

Abstract:Fine particulatematter (PM2.5) has health effects that may depend on its sources and chemical composition. Few studies have quantified the composition of personal and area PM2.5 in rural settings over the same time period. Yet, this information would shed important light on the sources influencing personal PM2.5 exposures. This study investigated the sources and chemical composition of 40 personal exposure, 40 household, and 36 ambient PM2.5 samples collected in the non-heating and heating seasons in rural southwestern China. Chemical analysis included black carbon (BC), water-soluble components (ions, organic carbon), elements, and organic tracers. Source apportionment was conducted using organic tracer concentrations in a Chemical Mass Balance model. Biomass burning was the largest identified PM2.5 source contributor to household (average, SD: 48 +/- 11%) and exposures (31 +/- 6%) in both seasons, and ambient PM2.5 in winter (20 +/- 4%). Food cooking also contributed to household and personal PM, reaching approximately half of the biomass contributions. Secondary inorganic aerosol was the major identified source in summertime ambient PM2.5 (32 +/- 14%), but was present in all samples (summer: 10 +/- 3% [household], 13 +/- 6% [exposures]; winter: 18 +/- 2% [ambient], 7 +/- 2% [household], 8 +/- 2% [exposures]). Dust concentrations and fractional contribution to total PM2.5 were higher in summer exposure samples (7 +/- 4%) than in ambient or household samples (6 +/- 1% and 2 +/- 1%, respectively). Indoor sources comprised up to one-fifth of ambient PM2.5, and outdoor sources (vehicles, secondary aerosols) contributed up to 15% of household PM2.5. While household sources were the main contributors to PM2.5 exposures in terms of mass, inorganic components of personal exposures differed from household samples. Based on these findings, health-focused initiatives to reduce harmful PM2.5 exposures may consider a coordinated approach to address both indoor and outdoor PM2.5 source contributors.
