Abstract:BACKGROUND: The relationship between the impacted mandibular third molar (IMTM) and the external root resorption (ERR) of the mandibular second molar (MSM) was analysed with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The risk factors affecting the ERR of the MSM were examined to provide a reference.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 327 patients (total: 578 teeth) admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Yanbian University for IMTM extraction from January 2017 to December 2019 was chosen and divided according to gender and age. The correlation between the IMTM and ERR of MSM was analysed, including inclination angle, impaction direction and depth. The relationship of mandibular ascending ramus classification with ERR of MSM was also analysed. In addition, the correlation between the MTM impaction type and the severity of ERR was analysed.RESULTS: The incidence of ERR of MSM in male patients was higher than in females (27.9% vs.17.6%, p = 0.018). The occurrence and the site of ERR showed statistical differences in the inclination angle [(≤20°, 3.6%) vs. (21°-40°, 27.1%) vs. (41°-60°, 27.6%) vs. (61°-80°, 25.6%) vs. (>80°, 31.7%), p <0.001], impaction direction [(Vertical, 1.1%) vs. (Mesial, 32.7%) vs. (Horizontal, 25.3%), p <0.001] and depth of MTM [(Low position, 38.6%) vs. (Median position, 32.0%) vs. (High position, 13.7%), p <0.001]. Also, there was a significant difference in the mandibular ascending ramus type [(Class I, 17.4%) vs. (Class II, 32.3%) vs. (Class III, 44.9%), p <0.001]. In addition, the severity of ERR showed statistical differences in the mesial (40.9%, p<0.05), lower impaction (54.5%, p<0.05) depth of MTM and type III of mandibular ascending ramus (63.6%, p<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The inclination angle, impaction direction, and depth of MTM were the influencing factors for the occurrence and site of ERR. Also, mandibular ascending ramus type was the impact fact. For MTM with mesioangular, lower impaction, and mandibular ascending ramus with type III, the ERR of the MSM was severer.

Abstract:Objective: This study sought to assess the frequency and severity of second molar external root resorption (ERR) due to the adjacent third molar and its correlation with the position of third molar and other related factors using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 320 second molars and their adjacent impacted third molars on CBCT scans of patients over 16 years, retrieved from the archives of Azad University Radiology Department. Presence/absence of second molar ERR, its location and severity (if present), and position of adjacent third molar were determined on CBCT scans, and recorded in a checklist. Data were analyzed using a logistic regression model. Results: The frequency of second molar ERR was 33.4% in the mandible and 14% in the maxilla. The severity of ERR was significantly correlated with the involved jaw (P=0.001) but had no correlation with age, gender, or depth of impaction of adjacent third molar (P>0.05). The mesioangular and horizontal positions of impacted third molars had a significant correlation with the frequency of second molar ERR (P<0.006). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, ERR occurring in second molars adjacent to third molars is common, especially in the mandible. Mesially inclined third molars have a greater potential of being associated with ERR in second molars.
External root resorption of the second molar associated with mesially and horizontally impacted mandibular third molar: evidence from cone beam computed tomography

Abstract:ObjectivesThe aim of the present study was to assess the incidence and risk factors of ERR in second molars with mesially and horizontally impacted mandibular third molars using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images from patients in a Chinese tertiary referral hospital.Materials and methodsA total number of 216 patients with 362 mesially and horizontally impacted mandibular third molars who were treated at our institution from 2014 to 2015 was retrospectively included. The ERR in second molars was identified on CBCT multiplanar images. The associations between incidence of ERR and multiple clinical parameters were statistically analyzed by Chi-square test. Moreover, the risk factors for ERR in second molars were further assessed by multivariate regression analysis.ResultsThe overall incidence of ERR in second molars was 20.17 % (73/362) as detected on CBCT images. The presence of ERR significantly associated with patients age and impaction depth of mandibular third molars. However, no significant relationship was found between ERR severity and impaction depth or ERR location. Multivariate regression analyses further revealed age over 35 years and impaction depth as important risk factors affecting the ERR incidence caused by mesial and horizontal impaction of mandibular third molar.ConclusionsERR in second molar resulted from mesially and horizontally impacted mandibular third molar is not very rare and can be reliably identified via CBCT scan.Clinical relevanceGiven the possibility of ERR associated with third molar impaction, the prophylactic removal of these impacted teeth could be considered especially for those patients with over 35 years and mesially and horizontally impacted teeth.

Prevalence of second molar external root resorption caused by mandibular third molars: a CBCT study.

Abstract:The aims of this study were to use cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scans to assess the prevalence of second molar external root resorption (ERR) caused by impacted mandibular third molars and to associate the location and severity of ERR with the third molar position using 2 classification systems-1 proposed by Pell and Gregory and the other proposed by Winter. In this cross-sectional study, 2 calibrated observers evaluated a total of 107 CBCT scans (71 female and 36 male patients). After the presence or absence of ERR was determined, ERR was classified according to its location (cervical, middle, apical third, or root apex) and severity (mild, moderate, or severe resorption). The data were assessed with the Pearson chi-square test, the chi-square test for linear trend, and Poisson regression analysis. The significance level was set at P < 0.05. The prevalence of second molar ERR in the sample as a whole was 47.7% (n = 51). The prevalence was significantly higher (69.4%) for male patients (P = 0.002; Pearson chi-square test). The probability that ERR would affect the second molar was 1.71 times greater when the third molar exhibited the Pell and Gregory class IC position (95% CI, 1.27-2.31) and 1.64 times greater when the third molar exhibited the Winter mesioangular position (95% CI, 1.38-1.95). There was a statistically significant association between ERR location and severity; the cervical third was the most affected by mild ERR and the middle third was the most affected by severe ERR. The prevalence of mandibular second molar ERR caused by impacted third molars is high, especially in male patients. Mandibular third molars in the Pell and Gregory class IC position or Winter mesioangular position demonstrated greater potential to result in ERR of the adjacent second molar.

Evaluation of Risk Factors for External Root Resorption and Dental Caries of Second Molars Associated With Impacted Third Molars

Abstract:Purpose: Impacted third molars (M3s) may lead to external root resorption (ERR) and dental caries (DC) in the adjacent second molars (M2s). The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for ERR and DC in M2s associated with impacted M3s. Materials and methods: We implemented a cross-sectional study and enrolled a sample composed of patients with M3s and M2s present and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans available for review. If there was contact between the M2 and the adjacent M3 and the border of radiolucency was more distinct, the case was considered ERR. Apart from that, the case was considered DC. Potential predictor variables were defined as age, gender, tooth location, M2-M3 contact, root development in M3, M3 inclination, M3 impaction type, and M3 follicular diameter. Outcomes of the study were DC and ERR in M2s. CBCT was used to detect the presence of DC and ERR in M2s. Results: A total of 250 eligible images of M3s in the upper and lower jaws of 167 patients were included. The mean age of the patients with CBCT images available was 26.08 ± 4 years (range, 18 to 40), and 43.6% of the patients were men. Factors associated with a significantly increased frequency of ERR in M2s included maxillary location, presence of M2-M3 contact, and mesioangular inclination (P < .005). DC in M2s was significantly more likely to occur in those with absence of contact between M2 and M3 (P < .005). Conclusions: The results of this study showed an increased risk of ERR to be associated with maxillary molars, mesioangular inclination, and presence of M2-M3 contact. The variable associated with an increased risk of DC was the absence of M2-M3 contact.
A Prediction Model for External Root Resorption of the Second Molars Associated With Third Molars

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate risk factors for external root resorption (ERR) of second molars (M2) associated with impacted third molars (M3), and to develop a prediction model that can offer dentists a reliable and efficient tool for predicting the likelihood of ERR. Methods: A total of 798 patients with 2156 impacted third molars were collected from three centres between 1 December 2018 and 15 December 2018. ERR was identified by cone beam computed tomography examinations. The effects of different risk factors on the presence/absence of ERR and its severity were analysed using Chi-square or Fisher test. Multivariate logistic regressive analysis with stepwise variable selection methods was performed to identify factors which were significant predictors for ERR and its severity. Subsequently, a prediction model was developed, and the model performance was validated internally and externally. Results: The overall incidence of ERR of second molars was 16.05%. The prediction model was established using six factors including position (upper/lower jaw), impact type, impact depth (PG: A-B-C), contact position, root number of M3, and age. In terms of internal validation, the prediction model demonstrated satisfactory performance, achieving an area under curve of 0.961 and a prediction accuracy of 0.907. As for external validation, the area under curve remained high at 0.953, with a prediction accuracy of 0.892. Conclusion: A risk prediction model for ERR was established in the present study. Position (upper or lower jaw), impact type, impact depth (PG: A-B-C), contact position, root number of M3, and age were identified as influencing variables which were significant predictors in the development of this predictive model. The prediction model showed great discrimination and calibration. Clinical relevance: This prediction model has the potential to aid dentists and patients in making clinical decisions regarding the necessity of M3 extraction.

Abstract:The effects of two potent vasodilating drugs, captopril (C) (25 mg tid), nicar dipine (N) (20 mg tid), and placebo (P) were evaluated and compared, in 10 men (mean age of sixty-five years) with intermittent claudication from moderate to severe multilevel chronic occlusive arterial disease (COAD) of the lower extrem ity, by use of the Doppler ultrasonic method, at rest and after Carter's exercise test. All the examined subjects were normotensive, without diabetes or cardio pathy; all have been smokers. The eight-week total protocol consisted of an initial two-week placebo run-in period followed by two active drug phases and a two-week placebo phase, ac cording to a double-blind, randomized, crossover design. At the end of each two-week period, ankle-arm index (AAI) and, following exercise, onset of lower extremity discomfort time (ODT), duration of exercise (ET), decrease of ankle systolic pressure after test (APD), and recovery time (RT) were determined. Moreover, at rest, just after exercise, and after recovery, simultaneous common femoral artery velocity waves were recorded and analyzed by a quantitative approach to detect the peripheral vasomotor adjustments. None of the patients required the withdrawal of the active treatments. Com pared with P, C significantly reduced APD and RT, and N reduced RT and AAI; furthermore N caused a significant decrease in ODT, whereas C showed a trend, although not statistically significant, to increase ODT. Neither active therapy modified ET. These results suggest that C and N have different short-term effects on pe ripheral circulation in COAD. During exercise, C induces hemodynamic im provement in the ischemic lower extremity probably by inhibition of the sympathetic system and consequent reduction in collateral vessel vasoconstric tion.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo evaluate the relationship between the position and impaction level of the impacted maxillary third molar teeth and marginal bone loss, caries and resorption findings on the distal surface of the second molar teeth with cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scans.MethodsAll CBCT images of 189 impacted maxillary teeth belonging to 121 patients were examined by an observer. After determining the position and impaction level of the impacted maxillary third molar teeth, presence of caries, resorption and marginal bone loss in the distal of the second molar tooth were evaluated. IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 (IBM Corp. Released 2013. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) was used for statistical analyses and calculations. Data were analysed using the Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test.ResultsA statistically significant difference was found in terms of the impaction level of the impacted maxillary third molar tooth and the presence of caries in the distal surface of the second molar tooth, in terms of the impaction level of the impacted third molar tooth and the presence of marginal bone loss in the distal surface of the second molar tooth. A similar difference was found in terms of the impaction level of the impacted third molar tooth and the presence of root resorption in the distal surface of the second molar tooth.ConclusionThese data on the natural history of impacted maxillary third molars may contribute to both more accurate estimates of the risk of complications associated with these teeth and determination of the prophylactic approach to asymptomatic impacted third molars.

Abstract:(1) Background: This study assessed the spatial position and anatomical features associated with impacted third molars through a map-reading strategy employing cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). (2) Methods: The positioning of impacted third molars on CBCT was assessed using Winter's and Pell and Gregory's classifications. External root resorption in mandibular second molars was categorized according to Herman's classification. Additionally, the relationship between the mandibular third molar root apex and the mandibular canal was examined. Comparative statistical analysis was conducted using Fisher's exact test, with a significance level considered as 5%. (3) Results: The results indicated that, based on Winter's classification, 48.06 % of impacted teeth were positioned mesioangularly. Employing Pell and Gregory's classification, 43.22% of the impacted molars fell into positions B and C, with 54.2% classified as Class II. A notable 69.7% of teeth exhibited no contact between the root apex and the mandibular canal, and external root resorption in the distal aspect of the second molar was absent in 88.7% of cases. (4) Conclusions: Utilizing the map-reading strategy with CBCT scans to assess the anatomical positions and characteristics of impacted third molars enhances professional confidence and sets a standard for quality and safety in the surgical procedure for patients.

Abstract:Introduction: Impacted third molar reduces the bone level in the distal aspect of second molar, and sometimes it can lead to external root resorption of the adjacent second molar. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and quality of this resorption using cone-beam computed tomography scanning. Materials & Methods: In this descriptive study, CBCT images selected from 60 patients (including 107 maxillary & mandibular impacted third molars) were obtained from patients referring to maxillofacial radiology department of dental faculty of Islamic Azad University of Isfahan (Khorasgan) in 2016. Under observation of oral radiologist, the images were examined (two times with one-week interval) in axial, coronal, and sagittal sections and recorded to diagnose external root resorption in CBCT. The data were analyzed via descriptive statistics including contingency tables and relative abundance. Results: The prevalence of external root resorption of second molar, adjacent to the third molar were 43.25%. The most common type of third molar impaction were mesioangular third molars (41.1%) and in the next level were the vertical (28.1%), and distoangular (18.7) and then horizontal (12.1). The most common location of resorption in mandibular second molar teeth was in 1/3 of cervical (62.5%), and then 1/3 of apical (20.8%) and 1/3 of the middle (12.5%). Also one of teeth resorptions (4.2%) was between the 1/3 of apical and 1/3 of the middle. The most common site of resorption in maxillary second molar teeth was at 1/3 of the apical (68.45%), and then at the 1/3 of the middle (17.35%) and 1/3 of cervical (8.7%). With regards to the severity of resorption; 78.96% of resorptions were mild, 12.03% severe, and 9.03 were moderate. Conclusion: The prevalence of this type of resorption is almost high and the most common position of impacted third molars that resulted in this type of resorption are mesioangular and horizontal. Most common site of resorption in the maxilla was 1.3 of the apical and in the mandible was 1.3 of the cervical, which were often mild in resorption.

Abstract:Neighborhood characteristics have been linked to healthy behavior, including effective parenting behaviors. This may be partially explained through the neighborhood’s relation to parents’ access to social support from friends and family. The current study examined associations of neighborhood characteristics with parenting behaviors indirectly through social support. The sample included 614 mothers of 11- to 12-year-old youths enrolled in a health care system in the San Francisco area. Structural equations modeling shows that neighborhood perceptions were related to parenting behaviors, indirectly through social support, whereas archival census neighborhood indicators were unrelated to social support and parenting. Perceived neighborhood social cohesion and control were related to greater social support, which was related to more effective parenting style, parent–child communication, and monitoring. Perceived neighborhood disorganization was unrelated to social support. Prevention strategies should focus on helping parents build a social support network that can act as a resource in times of need.
Risk factors for external root resorption of maxillary second molars associated with third molars

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of panoramic images compared to cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging for maxillary third molar (M3)-associated external root resorption (ERR), and to identify the risk factors of ERR on panoramic images.Materials and Methods: The study population was composed of all patients who underwent panoramic imaging at Dankook University Dental Hospital from May to October 2019. In total, 397 cases of maxillary M3s in 247 patients (147 men and 100 women) were included. The diagnostic accuracy of ERR in panoramic images compared to CBCT images was evaluated using the chi-square test. To identify risk factors for ERR, dental records and panoramic findings were evaluated by logistic regression analysis.Results: The diagnostic accuracy of ERR on panoramic images was 0.79 compared to CBCT images (P<0.05). Superimposition of M3s onto second molars (M2) was associated with an approximately 33 times higher risk of ERR than separated M3s (P<0.05). Impacted M3s showed a 5 times higher risk of ERR than erupted M3s (P<0.05).Conclusion: ERR related to M3s is a common clinical condition, and superimposition of M3 onto M2 on panoramic images was the most important risk factor for ERR. It seemed that CBCT examinations for maxillary M3s might be indicated for ERR diagnosis especially if panoramic radiographs show superimposition of M3 onto M2. Impaction itself was also a risk factor, and it should be carefully examined.

Abstract:External root resorption (ERR) of permanent teeth is believed to result from mechanical or inflammatory factors, such as the force pressure of orthodontic appliances, dental trauma, cysts or tumours, chronic apical periodontitis, and poor regeneration of the periodontium in reimplanted or transplanted teeth. Another factor frequently associated with ERR of second molars is an unerupted third molar close to the root of the second molar. This type of root resorption has been observed at the site of contact with the impacted tooth, indicating that the impacted tooth's pressure participates in the resorption process. Though this resorption mechanism is not yet apparent, some investigators deem it similar to the mechanism involved in the resorption of primary teeth. This case report aims to describe a second molar resorption case triggered by an impacted third molar and perform a literature review. Abstract:In this paper, we present a generic analytical model and ATLAS simulation studies of a homojunction light emitting diode (LED) based on p+-InAs0.91Sb0.09/ n 0-InAs0.91Sb0.09/ n +-InAs0.91Sb0.09 materials system suitable for use as source in the optical absorption spectroscopy in the mid-infrared spectral region at 300K. The various electro-optical properties of the homojunction LED have been evaluated by analytical techniques and ATLAS device simulation software. The current-voltage characteristics of the structure are computed analytically and using ATLAS device simulation software and found to be in good agreement. The output power of the homojunction LED has been estimated as a function of bias current and compared/ contrasted with the reported experimental results.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of third molars on caries, external root resorption, and alveolar bone loss on the distal surface of adjacent second molars. A total of 2488 panoramic radiographs of adult Poles were evaluated. Third molars were classified, according to eruption status, into non-impacted, partially, or completely impacted, and according to angulation into horizontal, mesioangular, vertical, and distoangular. Completely impacted third molars were assigned as reference group. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals for the occurrence of the above-mentioned pathologies were 1.39 (1.09-2.21), 6.51 (3.72-10.11), and 2.42 (1.22-4.09), respectively, for second molars with adjacent erupted third molars and 1.54 (1.11-2.82), 10.65 (7.81-20.19), and 5.21 (3.38-10.81), respectively, when partially impacted third molars were next to second molars. The ORs of lesions were significantly higher for horizontally and mesioangularly impacted third molars. Within the limitation of a radiological study, it might be concluded that the presence of erupted third molars is a risk factor for caries, while the presence of impacted third molars increases the risk of root resorption and bone loss on the distal surface of second molars.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to compare the results of the measurements made using two methods for determining the retromolar eruption spaces and the mesiodistal inclinations of impacted mandibular third molars. These are the main parameters based on which the eruption of these teeth can be predicted. A Sirona GALILEOS Compact/Comfort CBCT scanner was used for the study. A total of 127 patients were included in the study. We made the measurements using our integrated method and the standard method used in the dental practice for determining the eruption space and the mesiodistal inclination of these teeth, and then we compared the results. The mean difference between the two methods for estimating the retromolar space deficiency on the left was 1.70 mm and standard deviation (SD) 2.95; mean error of the mean was 0.29; and Student t-test (paired t-test) = 5.86, significant level of the correlation was 0.001, <0.05. Regarding the teeth on the right, it was mean 1.59 mm and standard deviation (SD) 2.98; mean error of the mean was 0.31. The t-test performed found a statistically significant difference between the methods in determining the retromolar eruption spaces (t-test (paired t-test) = 5.13; significant level of the correlation 0.001; p 0.05. As for the teeth on the right, it was 2.41°, SD = 9.57, mean error of the mean = 2.39, t-test 0.175, significant level of the correlation = 0.863, and >0.05. No statistically significant difference was found between the two methods in measuring the inclinations of impacted third molars. The conclusion of our study is that the determination of the mesiodistal inclination of the teeth and the available eruption space using the method developed by us is more accurate compared to the standard method, because constant points and planes are used. This method allows for predicting the eruption of impacted mandibular third molars.

Abstract:Objectives Impacted third molars(3M), commonly known as wisdom teeth, are prone to caries and pathological formations depending on their position in the jaw. This study aimed to determine and compare the incidence of caries, pathological formations, and the superposition of the roots of the mandibular impacted third molar over the mandibular canal in different positions of impacted 3Ms. Meterials and Methods This retrospective study was conducted on orthopantomographs of patients who presented with 3M complaints at the Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department between 2019 and 2023. The 3M were classified according to their position by two researchers independently and were evaluated for caries, pathology, and nerve superposition. The position of the 3Ms classified using Pell and Gregory and Winter's classifications. The primary outcome variable was the presence of caries in the 3M. The secondary outcome variable was the presence of pathological formations around the 3M. The tertiary outcome variable was the superposition of the roots of the mandibular 3M over the mandibular canal. Results A total of 7,038 patients were included in the study, with 53.74% being female. The mean age was 32.15±7.2 years. The highest incidence of caries was associated with the vertical position in both maxillary and mandibular 3Ms (right maxillary: 9.98%, P<0.001; left maxillary: 12.74%, P<0.001; left mandibular: 11.66%, p=0.003; right mandibular: 11.69%, p=0.031). Pathological formations were most commonly observed in the vertical position, but the highest incidence was found in the horizontal or mesioangular positions (right maxillary: 36.84%, p<0.001; left maxillary: 40%, p<0.001; left mandibular: 62.04%, p<0.001; right mandibular: 62.25%, p<0.001). Nerve superposition was most common in the vertical position but was highest in the distoangular position (left mandibular: 74.69%, p<0.001; right mandibular: 76.66%, p<0.001). Conclusions : The position of 3Ms plays a critical role in the development of complications such as caries and pathological formations. Prophylactic extraction may be considered more seriously in cases where the position of the tooth poses a higher risk of complications.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of mesioangular mandibular 3rd molar impaction on the periodontal health of neighbouring teeth in patients. Study Design: Dental College HITEC-IMS Taxilla/Gulraiz Dental Clinic Quaid Avenue Main Road, Gulraiz 3, Rawalpindi. Jan 2021-Aug 2021 Place and Duration: Methods: Total of ninety patients of both genders was presented in this study. After receiving informed written consent, detailed demographic information about the recruited cases was collected, including age, gender, body mass index, symptoms, and complications. All of the patients experienced mesioangular third molar impactions on their mandibular teeth. A total of 90 IMTMs were evaluated using panoramic radiographs to determine their impaction depth, relationship with the ramus, and angulation, as well as their association with 2nd molar distal caries and root resorption, pathological states, and proximity to the mandibular canal. The position of the impacted third molar was determined using the Pell and Gregory categorization system. The odds ratio (OR) and 95 percent confidence interval (CI) of IMTM's position on the associated problems are shown in the table below (credible interval for Bayesian models). P-values with two-tailed confidence intervals of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. SPSS 27.0 version was used to analyze complete data. Results: There were 55 (61.1%) males and 35 (38.9%) females with mean BMI 24.61±5.22 kg/m2. Most of patients 41 (45.6%) were aged between 20-35 years. Mean attachment level was 2.99±4.74 and probing depth was 3.78±4.61. Caries, pain, and swelling were the most often reported symptoms, according to our research. The most common diseases were distal second molar root caries, which accounted for 30 (33.3%) of all cases, and pocket development, which accounted for 21 (23.3%). According to histological findings, periapical inflammation was the most common finding in 46 (51.1%) of the cases, followed by dental follicle in 24 (26.7%), cyst in 16 (17.8%), and other malignancies in 4 (4.4%) cases. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, the impacted mandibular third molar was most closely associated with distal second molar root caries and the formation of a pocket between the impacted tooth and the second molar tooth in the lower jaw. Most common pathology linked with the impacted molar was distal second molar root caries and the formation of a pocket between the affected tooth and the second molar. Abstract:Third mandibular molars mainly appear to be in an inappropriate position in dental arch, so become the teeth which barely erupt or stay impacted in jaws. The aim of this study is to analyze the correlation between the preoperative pathologies with the position of the impacted third mandibular molar, sex and age of the patients. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 80 patients, of both sexes, diagnosed with fully or partially impacted third mandibular molars, who were followed up after the surgery for a three-month period. All the patients were clinically examined and for each of them was registered a panoramic radiography, to analyze the factors causing the pathology, which leads to the surgical extraction of the teeth. The most manifested preoperative pathologies correlating to the position of impacted mandibular third molars were: resorption of distal root of mandibular second adjacent molar, caries of second adjacent molar, pericoronitis, periodontal disease, frontal incisal mandibular crowding. All the pathologies were associated with the tooth position, some differed by age and gender. We conclude that preoperative complaints related to the position of the impacted third mandibular molar are in positive proportion to the age of the patients, i.e. subjective complaints increase with age: pain, limited opening of the mouth, local inflammation of the gingiva and paresthesia. The position of the impacted third mandibular molar affects the occurrence of preoperative pathologies: pericoronitis was most prevalent in impacted third mandibular molars with vertical position, class II, A position and partial impaction; periodontal diseases of second adjacent mandibular molar are most prevalent in impacted third mandibular molar with mesioangular position, class III, B position and partial impaction.
