Abstract:Livestock and crop production are the main sources of ammonia (NH3) emissions, which are known to degrade the air quality. Numerous studies have been conducted to explore the mitigation potential of various approaches, although few have examined the systematic NH3 emission mitigation potential when considering both crop and livestock systems based on coherent in situ measurement results. Herein, we design an optimal system wherein coupled crop and layer production systems reveal feasible approaches for significant mitigation potential at each stage of the process. Specifically, these measures involve (i) using a low crude protein (LCP) feed, (ii) composting manure with certain additives, and (iii) substituting manure with optimal fertilization in a summer maize-winter wheat cropping system. The results show that (i) LCP feed leads to a 14 % reduction in NH3 emissions at the housing stage, (ii) introducing additives during the composing stage reduces NH3 emissions by 16 %–46 %, and (iii) the NH3 reduction potential reaches 35 %–44 % at the field application stage. In the overall crop-layer system, the optimal system with the improved management strategy applied at every stage results in a 48 % and 56 % reduction in NH3 emissions for per unit eggs and grain production, respectively, relative to a traditional production system. This study confirms that NH3 emissions can be cut in half by implementing optimal crop-livestock systems with appropriate mitigation approaches. This is a feasible model that can be promoted and extended in various agricultural areas, which together with technological, policy, and economic support can enable significant mitigation potential for sustainable agriculture development.

Abstract:Increasing use of manure nutrients in crop production and decreasing the input of chemical fertilizers, is a promising way to achieve a more circular economy and more sustainable food systems. The integrated effects of amended composting manure with additives and a 50% substitution of chemical fertilizer nitrogen (N) input by amended manure N input to cropland were proved to halve ammonia (NH3) emissions from an integrate manure-cropland system. However, the accompanied impacts of these measures on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the integrate manure-cropland system have not been well quantified. Here, we examined the effects of improved manure storage and treatment and its usage at field on GHG emissions from a system perspective, based on a two-year experiment in the North China Plain (NCP). Manure storage and treatment included natural storage (NS) and composting with straw, with or without amendment by zeolite (Z) and superphosphate (SP). Manure products were applied as basal fertilizer for both crops. Results showed that CH4 was the dominant GHG source in the natural storage treatment, whereas N2O dominated in the manure composting treatments. Amending manure with straw, Z and SP stimulated 15–48 times N2O emission and decreased CH4 emissions by 82%–91% during storage and treatment. Replacement of 50% synthetic fertilizer N by manure N decreased total system GHG emissions by 25%–34%. Differences between composted manure treatments in total system GHG emissions were relatively small, although comparatively higher in amended manure treatments; however, they promoted greater soil organic carbon sink activity, resulting in no significant difference in net global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). Application of amended manure produced high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in the integrated crop–manure system. The NH3 mitigation approach of replacing 50% of synthetic fertilizer N by amended manure N synergistically decreased total GHG emissions, increased system NUE and also increased the net economic benefit by 5%–11% over the 2 years of the experiment.

Abstract:Confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are the main sources of air pollutants such as ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gases. Among air pollutants, NH3 is one of the most concerned gasses in terms of air quality, environmental impacts, and manure nutrient losses. It is recommended that NH3 concentrations in the poultry house should be controlled below 25 ppm. Otherwise, the poor air quality will impair the health and welfare of animals and their caretakers. After releasing from poultry houses, NH3 contributes to the form of fine particulate matters in the air and acidify soil and water bodies after deposition. Therefore, understanding the emission influential factors and impacts is critical for developing mitigation strategies to protect animals' welfare and health, environment, and ecosystems. This review paper summarized the primary NH3 emission influential factors, such as how poultry housing systems, seasonal changes, feed management, bedding materials, animal densities, and animals' activities can impact indoor air quality and emissions. A higher level of NH3 (e.g., >25 ppm) results in lower production efficiency and poor welfare and health, e.g., respiratory disorder, less feed intake, lower growth rates or egg production, poor feed use efficiency, increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, and mortality. In addition, the egg quality (e.g., albumen height, pH, and condensation) was reduced after laying hens chronically exposed to high NH3 levels. High NH3 levels have detrimental effects on farm workers' health as it is a corrosive substance to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, and thus may cause blindness, irritation (throat, nose, eyes), and lung illness. For controlling poultry house NH3 levels and emissions, we analyzed various mitigation strategies such as litter additives, biofiltration, acid scrubber, dietary manipulation, and bedding materials. Litter additives were tested with 50% efficiency in broiler houses and 80-90% mitigation efficiency for cage-free hen litter at a higher application rate (0.9 kg m-2). Filtration systems such as multi-stage acid scrubbers have up to 95% efficiency on NH3 mitigation. However, cautions should be paid as mitigation strategies could be cost prohibitive for farmers, which needs assistances or subsidies from governments.

Abstract:Two identical pig rooms, with mechanical ventilation, were used to compare the environmental impact of a deep litter fermentation system for growing-finishing pigs with a fully slatted floor system. The pig manure in the fully slatted floor room was removed manually twice daily, but in the fermented deep litter room, no manure was removed. Indoor and outdoor temperature, relative humidity, and ammonia concentration were measured continuously during the whole experimental period. Odour was sampled and analysed using the triangle odour bag method for 15 days during the experimental period. The performance of the pigs was not significantly different between the floor types. There were significant differences for both NH3 concentrations and emissions according to floor type (p < 0.001). NH3 emissions from pigs raised on the slatted floor and on the fermented deep litter were 8.82 and 2.16 g d(-1) pig(-1), respectively. Emissions increased from the first period to the second by about 4.9 times for NH3 with fully slatted floor and 1.1 times for NH3 with fermented deep litter. The parameters of floor type, pig weight, outdoor temperature and ventilation rate explained most of the variability of NH3 emissions. There were significant differences in odour concentration as odour units (OU), between floor types (p < 0.01). Mean odour concentrations during the whole experiment were 105.4 OU for the slatted floor room and 67.5 OU for the deep litter room. A review of mitigation technologies and management strategies for greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions in livestock production

Abstract:One of the key issues in manure management of livestock production is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollutant emissions, which lead to significant environmental footprint and human/animal health threats. This study provides a review of potentially efficacious technologies and management strategies that reduce GHG and air pollutant emissions during the three key stages of manure management in livestock production, i.e., animal housing, manure storage and treatment, and manure application. Several effective mitigation technologies and practices for each manure management stage are identified and analyzed in detail, including feeding formulation adjustment, frequent manure removal and air scrubber during animal housing stage; solid-liquid separation, manure covers for storage, acidification, anaerobic digestion and composting during manure storage and treatment stage; land application techniques at appropriate timing during manure application stage. The results indicated several promising approaches to reduce multiple gas emissions from the entire manure management. Removing manure 2–3 times per week or every day during animal housing stage is an effective and simple way to reduce GHG and air pollutant emissions. Acidification during manure storage and treatment stage can reduce ammonia and methane emissions by 33%–93% and 67%–87%, respectively and proper acid, such as lactic acid can also reduce nitrous oxide emission by about 90%. Shallow injection of manure for field application has the best performance in reducing ammonia emission by 62%–70% but increase nitrous oxide emission. The possible trade-off brings insight to the prioritization of targeted gas emissions for the researchers, stakeholders and policymakers, and also highlights the importance of assessing the mitigation technologies across the entire manure management chain. Implementing a combination of the management strategies needs comprehensive considerations about mitigation efficiency, technical feasibility, local regulations, climate condition, scalability and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract:China's rapid urbanization, large population, and increasing consumption of calorie-and meat-intensive diets, have resulted in China becoming the world's largest source of ammonia (NH3) emissions from livestock production. This is the first study to use provincial, condition-specific emission factors based on most recently available studies on Chinese manure management and environmental conditions. The estimated NH3 emission temporal trends and spatial patterns are interpreted in relation to government policies affecting livestock production. Scenario analysis is used to project emissions and estimate mitigation potential of NH3 emissions, to year 2030. We produce a 1km×1km gridded NH3 emission inventory for 2008 based on county-level activity data, which can help identify locations of highest NH3 emissions. The total NH3 emissions from manure generated by livestock production in 2008 were 7.3TgNH3·yr-1 (interquartile range from 6.1 to 8.6TgNH3·yr-1), and the major sources were poultry (29.9%), pigs (28.4%), other cattle (27.9%), and dairy cattle (7.0%), while sheep and goats (3.6%), donkeys (1.3%), horses (1.2%), and mules (0.7%) had smaller contributions. From 1978 to 2008, annual NH3 emissions fluctuated with two peaks (1996 and 2006), and total emissions increased from 2.2 to 7.3Tg·yr-1 increasing on average 4.4%·yr-1. Under a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, NH3 emissions in 2030 are expected to be 13.9TgNH3·yr-1 (11.5-16.3TgNH3·yr-1). Under mitigation scenarios, the projected emissions could be reduced by 18.9-37.3% compared to 2030 BAU emissions. This study improves our understanding of NH3 emissions from livestock production, which is needed to guide stakeholders and policymakers to make well informed mitigation decisions for NH3 emissions from livestock production at the country and regional levels.

Abstract:Atmospheric ammonia is an important air pollutant, while dairy production is a significant source of ammonia emissions. The aim of the present dairy manure management study was to analyze: 1) the impacts of acidification of the manure surface and/or a vermiculite cover on ammonia, nitrous oxide and methane emissions from animal housing and manure storage stages, 2) the potential influence on the reactive nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) footprints of milk from cradle-to-farm-gate. It was based on a consecutive incubation trial and a life cycle assessment approach for a typical dairy farm system on the North China Plain. Trial results showed that surface-acidification of manure under a slatted floor could reduce ammonia emission by 98 and 22% from housing (one day) and storage stages (38 days), respectively, with small effects on nitrous oxide and methane emissions. The vermiculite cover (storage stage only) reduced ammonia emissions by 98% and methane by 58%, but increased nitrous oxide emissions from storage by almost six times with small absolute losses. The combination of the two mitigations retained 90% of the manure N post-storage relative to that at the start of the housing stage. Life cycle assessment indicated that the reactive-N footprint (NF, i.e. reactive N loss per kg fat- and protein-corrected milk) of milk production was dominated by ammonia emissions and was reduced by 10, 33 and 38% in the manure acidification, manure cover and combination treatments, respectively. Acidification of the manure surface, the vermiculite cover and combination treatments decreased the C footprint (CF, i.e. total greenhouse gas emissions per kg fat- and protein-corrected milk) by 1.0, 1.9 and 2.4%, respectively. This holistic analysis, combining incubation trials and life cycle assessment, indicates that surface-acidification of manure under the slatted floor and a vermiculite cover during manure storage can reduce ammonia emission from a dairy farm system, with an overall positive influence on reduction of NF and CF for dairy farm systems.

Abstract:Nearly 60% of all ammonia (NH3) emissions are from livestock manure. Understanding the sources and magnitude of NH3 emissions from manure systems is critical to implement mitigation strategies. This study models 13 archetypical conventional (5 farms), organic (5 farms), and grazing (3 farms) dairy farms to estimate NH3 emissions from manure at the barn, storage, and after land application. Mitigation practices related to management of the herd, crop production, and manure are subsequently modeled to quantify the change in NH3 emissions from manure by comparing archetypical with these alternative practices. A mass balance of nutrients is also conducted. Emissions per tonne of excreted manure for the manure system (barn, storage, and land application) range from 3.0 to 4.4 g NH3 for conventional farms, 3.5-4.4 g NH3 for organic farms, and 3.4-3.9 g NH3 for grazing farms. For all farm types, storage and land application are the main sources of NH3 emissions from manure. In general, solid manures have higher emission intensities due to higher pH during storage (pH = 7.4 for liquid, 7.8 for slurry, and 8.5 for solid manure) and lower infiltration rates after land application when compared with slurry and liquid manures. The most effective management practices to reduce NH3 emissions from manure systems are combining solid-liquid separation with manure injection (up to 49% reduction in NH3 emissions), followed by injection alone, and reducing of crude protein in the dairy ration, especially in organic and grazing farms that have grazing and forages as the main component of the dairy ration. This study also shows that the intensity of NH3 emissions from manure depends significantly on the functional unit and presents results per manure excreted, total solids in excreted manure, animal units, and fat and protein corrected milk.

Using Poultry Litter Derived Biochar As Litter Amendment to Control Ammonia Emissions

Abstract:The literature documents large ammonia (NH3) emission to the atmosphere from poultry litter (PL) occurring during poultry grow-out, causing not only potential health impacts to humans and animals, but also environmental concerns. Furthermore, NH3 emission represents a significant loss of valuable nitrogen fertilizer. In the face of more stringent nutrient management and air quality regulations, it is strategically important to explore innovative technologies for alternative use of poultry litter to not only curtail NH3 emission but also recover its fertilizer value to protect the environment and health. The current technology for ammonia control is based on aluminum sulfate, sodium bisulfate, and ferric sulfate for absorbing or reacting with the ammonia released during the biodegradation of the animal manure. Biochar would be applied in the same manner as the other amendments. Due to its higher absorptive properties, the acidified biochar with low pH as litter amendment will result greater reduction on NH3. Converting poultry litter to biochar as litter amendment will potentially increase the value of the poultry litter. Another advantage of using biochar is that biochar based litter amendment has less soil salinization potential than other litter amendments that contain metal irons. Al+, Na+, and Fe+ in the other litter amendments could cause metal iron accumulation and increase soil salinity. In this study, an emission vessel system with poultry litter was used and a series experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of acidified poultry litter-derived biochar as litter amendments. The results showed, to achieve a similar performance, twice amount acidified biochar was needed compared to PLT (sodium bisulfate). With the application rate of 200 lb/1000 ft2 acidified biochar, the NH3 emission reduction from poultry litter can up to 47%.
Mitigation of Nitrogen Losses and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in a More Circular Cropping-Poultry Production System

Abstract:There is a global need to improve the environmental performances and circularity of livestock production sys-tems. This relates also to poultry production systems in China, however, the benefits of optimized, more circular systems have not been quantified. Here, we applied a substance flow analysis to estimate the reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from housing, manure processing and manure application to cropland in a conventional decoupled and an optimized coupled crop-poultry system. We hypothesized that an optimized coupled system has lower Nr losses and GHGs emissions, and a higher economic return for farmers. We used data from experimental measurements, a farm survey, literature and local market prices to estimate the farm performance for both systems. In the conventional system the manure was only partly (58%) utilized and the remaining 42% was wasted and discharged into the environment. In the optimized system a series of emission mitigation measures was adopted, including low-protein feeding, manure composting with additives and a partial replacement of synthetic fertilizers by manure. The optimized system produced 24% more products per 100 units of N input, leading to a whole-system nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) increase from 33% to 50%. The Nr losses per unit of product-N decreased by 55%, whereas the GHG emissions (N2O and CH4) decreased by 35%. Moreover, the net economic benefit increased by 21%. Evidently, the optimized and more circular system had significant economic and environmental benefits compared to the conventional one. These benefits will be drivers for the transformation to more sustainable production systems, but governmental policy incentives will be needed to remove current cultural and institutional barriers.
Strategies to reduce ammonia emissions from livestock and their cost-benefit analysis: A case study of Sheyang county

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) emissions, the majority of which arise from livestock production, are linked to high concentration of PM2.5 and lower air quality in China. NH3 mitigation options were well studied at the small-scale (laboratory or pilot), however, they lack of a large-scale test in China. This study fills this crucial gap by evaluating the cost-benefit of pioneering NH3 mitigation projects carried out for a whole county – Sheyang, Jiangsu province, China. Measures were implemented in 2019 following two distinct strategies, improved manure treatment for industrial livestock farms, and collection and central treatment for traditional livestock farms. Emission reductions of 16% were achieved in a short time. While this is remarkable, it falls short of expectations from small-scale studies. If measures were fully implemented according to purpose and meet expectations from the small scale, higher emission reductions of 42% would be possible. The cost benefit analysis presented in this study demonstrated advantages of central manure treatment over in-farm facilities. With improved implementation of mitigation strategies in industrial livestock farms, traditional livestock farms may play an increasing role in total NH3 emissions, which means such farms either need to be included in future NH3 mitigation policies or gradually replaced by industrial livestock farms.The study found an agricultural NH3 reduction technology route suitable for China's national conditions (such as the "Sheyang Model").

Abstract:The emission of ammonia (NH3) is predominantly caused by agriculture, especially by livestock keeping. The health effects of NH3 and the related formation of particulate matter are the reasons for solid efforts to reduce their ambient concentrations. In addition, the impact of global warming on livestock is increasing due to heat stress, likely also increasing NH3 emissions. Therefore, adaptation measures are under discussion to reduce the heat stress of animals inside livestock units. Because of the relationship between temperature increase and NH3 release, the impact of the adaptation measures to cool the indoor air of livestock units (three different energy-saving air preparation systems, an inversion of the feeding and resting times by half a day, a reduction of the stocking density and doubling the maximum volume flow rate) was investigated. The NH3 release was calculated by the following predictors: indoor air temperature; ventilation rate describing the turbulence inside the livestock building; and the diurnal variation caused by the animal activity. These parameters were calculated by a simulation model for the indoor climate of livestock buildings. The monthly mean of the NH3 emission for several adaptation measures, which were applied to reduce heat stress, were compared with the emission of a reference building for 1800 fattening pigs, divided into nine sections with 200 animals each for an all-in-all-out production cycle to calculate the mitigation potential. The higher the cooling power of such adaptation measures, the higher the mitigation potential for NH3. In particular, those adaptation measures which cool the inlet air (e.g., cooling pads reduce the emission by −2%, earth-air heat exchangers by −3.1%) show the best performance to mitigate the NH3 emission of livestock buildings.

Abstract:The global livestock system is one of the largest sources of ammonia emissions and there is an urgent need for ammonia mitigation. Here, we designed and constructed a novel strategy to abate ammonia emissions via livestock manure acidification based on a synthetic lactic acid bacteria community (LAB SynCom). The LAB SynCom possessed a wide carbon source spectrum and pH profile, high adaptability to the manure environment, and a high capability of generating lactic acid. The mitigation strategy was optimized based on the test and performance by adjusting the LAB SynCom inoculation ratio and the adding frequency of carbon source, which contributed to a total ammonia reduction efficiency of 95.5%. Furthermore, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that the LAB SynCom treatment reshaped the manure microbial community structure. Importantly, 22 manure ureolytic microbial genera and urea hydrolysis were notably inhibited by the LAB SynCom treatment during the treatment process. These findings provide new insight into manure acidification that the conversion from ammonia to ammonium ions and the inhibition of ureolytic bacteria exerted a synergistic effect on ammonia mitigation. This work systematically developed a novel strategy to mitigate ammonia emissions from livestock waste, which is a crucial step forward from traditional manure acidification to novel and environmental-friendly acidification.

Abstract:Dairy production systems represent a significant source of air pollutants such as greenhouse gases (GHG), that increase global warming, and ammonia (NH3), that leads to eutrophication and acidification of natural ecosystems. Greenhouse gases and ammonia are emitted both by conventional and organic dairy systems. Several studies have already been conducted to design practices that reduce greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions from dairy systems. However, those studies did not consider options specifically applied to organic farming, as well as the multiple trade-offs occurring between these air pollutants. This article reviews agricultural practices that mitigate greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions. Those practices can be applied to the most common organic dairy systems in northern Europe such as organic mixed crop-dairy systems. The following major points of mitigation options for animal production, crop production and grasslands are discussed. Animal production: the most promising options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the livestock management level involve either the improvement of animal production through dietary changes and genetic improvement or the reduction of the replacement rate. The control of the protein intake of animals is an effective means to reduce gaseous emissions of nitrogen, but it is difficult to implement in organic dairy farming systems. Considering the manure handling chain, mitigation options involve housing, storage and application. For housing, an increase in the amounts of straw used for bedding reduces NH3 emissions, while the limitation of CH4 emissions from deep litter is achieved by avoiding anaerobic conditions. During the storage of solid manure, composting could be an efficient mitigation option, depending on its management. Addition of straw to solid manure was shown to reduce CH4 and N2O emissions from the manure heaps. During the storage of liquid manure, emptying the slurry store before late spring is an efficient mitigation option to limit both CH4 and NH3 emissions. Addition of a wooden cover also reduces these emissions more efficiently than a natural surface crust alone, but may increase N2O emissions. Anaerobic digestion is the most promising way to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions from storage and land spreading, without increasing NH3 emissions. At the application stage, NH3 emissions may be reduced by spreading manure during the coolest part of the day, incorporating it quickly and in narrow bands. Crop production: the mitigation options for crop production focus on limiting CO2 and N2O emissions. The introduction of perennial crops or temporary leys of longer duration are promising options to limit CO2 emissions by storing carbon in plants or soils. Reduced tillage or no tillage as well as the incorporation of crop residues also favour carbon sequestration in soils, but these practices may enhance N2O emissions. Besides, the improvement of crop N-use efficiency through effective management of manure and slurry, by growing catch crops or by delaying the ploughing of leys, is of prime importance to reduce N2O emissions. Grassland: concerning grassland and grazing management, permanent conversion from arable to grassland provides high soil carbon sequestration while increasing or decreasing the livestock density seems not to be an appropriate mitigation option. From the study of the multiple interrelations between gases and between farm compartments, the following mitigation options are advised for organic mixed crop-dairy systems: (1) actions for increasing energy efficiency or fuel savings because they are beneficial in any case, (2) techniques improving efficiency of N management at field and farm levels because they affect not only N2O and NH3 emissions, but also nitrate leaching, and (3) biogas production through anaerobic digestion of manure because it is a promising efficient method to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, even if the profitability of this expensive investment needs to be carefully studied. Finally, the way the farmer implements the mitigation options, i.e. his practices, will be a determining factor in the reduction of greenhouse gas and NH3 emissions.

Abstract:Stored poultry manure can be a significant source of ammonia (NH) and greenhouse gases (GHGs), including nitrous oxide (NO), methane (CH), and carbon dioxide (CO) emissions. Amendments can be used to modify physiochemical properties of manure, thus having the potential to reduce gas emissions. Here, we lab-tested the single and combined effects of addition of reed straw, zeolite, and superphosphate on gas emissions from stored duck manure. We showed that, over a period of 46 d, cumulative NH emissions were reduced by 61 to 70% with superphosphate additions, whereas cumulative NO emissions were increased by up to 23% compared with the control treatment. Reed straw addition reduced cumulative NH, NO, and CH emissions relative to the control by 12, 27, and 47%, respectively, and zeolite addition reduced cumulative NH and NO emissions by 36 and 20%, respectively. Total GHG emissions (as CO-equivalents) were reduced by up to 27% with the additions of reed straw and/or zeolite. Our results indicate that reed straw or zeolite can be recommended as amendments to reduce GHG emissions from duck manure; however, superphosphate is more effective in reducing NH emissions.
Effect of Cornstalk Biochar Immobilized Bacteria on Ammonia Reduction in Laying Hen Manure Composting

Abstract:NH3 emission has become one of the key factors for aerobic composting of animal manure. It has been reported that adding microbial agents during aerobic composting can reduce NH3 emissions. However, environmental factors have a considerable influence on the activity and stability of the microbial agent. Therefore, this study used cornstalk biochar as carriers to find out the better biological immobilization method to examine the mitigation ability and mechanism of NH3 production from laying hen manure composting. The results from different immobilized methods showed that NH3 was reduced by 12.43%, 5.53%, 14.57%, and 22.61% in the cornstalk biochar group, free load bacteria group, mixed load bacteria group, and separate load bacteria group, respectively. Under the simulated composting condition, NH3 production was 46.52, 38.14, 39.08, and 30.81 g in the treatment of the control, mixed bacteria, cornstalk biochar, and cornstalk biochar separate load immobilized mixed bacteria, respectively. The cornstalk biochar separate load immobilized mixed bacteria treatment significantly reduced NH3 emission compared with the other treatments (p < 0.05). Compared with the control, adding cornstalk biochar immobilized mixed bacteria significantly decreased the electrical conductivity, water-soluble carbon, total nitrogen loss, and concentration of ammonium nitrogen (p < 0.05), and significantly increased the seed germination rate, total number of microorganisms, and relative abundance of lactic acid bacteria throughout the composting process (p < 0.05). Therefore, the reason for the low NH3 emission might be due not only to the adsorption of the cornstalk biochar but also because of the role of complex bacteria, which increases the relative abundance of lactic acid bacteria and promotes the acid production of lactic acid bacteria to reduce NH3 emissions. This result revealed the potential of using biological immobilization technology to reduce NH3 emissions during laying hen manure composting.

Abstract:Livestock production contributes significantly to global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Probiotic-fed broiler production has been shown to reduce greenhouse emissions in other nations significantly, however, outcomes in Malaysia are unknown. This study assesses the total greenhouse emissions of probiotic-fed broiler production from cradle to farm-gate using an accredited Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool, Greenhouse Accounting Framework (GAF). It determines the hotspot of greenhouse emissions and emission intensity of the farm in kg CO 2 -eq/kg liveweight. Three types of mitigation methods, i.e. selling untreated manure, composting, and conversion into biochar, were compared to identify their effectiveness. The research involves three broiler houses with one production cycle. Fifty-four gas samples and 90 poultry litter samples were collected throughout the production cycle and analysed for the targeted gases – i.e. carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen and volatile solid composition. Analysis results were used to estimate total greenhouse emissions from the farm using the LCA-GAF model. The mitigation efficiency achieved by selling untreated manure, composting, and biochar production is assessed by estimating the carbon stock mass. A new LCA model based on probiotic-fed broiler production was generated, specifically using data obtained from the experiment. The experimental results indicated that energy consumption, i.e. electricity and fuel, have the highest greenhouse emissions (44%), followed by feed production with 40% of the total 53.51 t CO 2 -eq/house/cycle in the probiotic-fed broiler farm. The emissions intensity of the farm is 1.57 kg CO 2 -eq/kg liveweight. Estimates of the mitigation efficiency were compared among untreated manure, biochar, and compost. Energy consumption, particularly electricity and fuel, contributed the highest greenhouse emissions in the probiotic-fed broiler production. The strategy of selling untreated poultry litter was the most effective carbon mitigation method. However, due to its adverse environmental and human health impacts, converting poultry litter into biochar is the preferable mitigation option. This study is profound for the poultry industry and environmental sustainability. It highlights the crucial role of energy consumption in greenhouse emissions from the probiotic-fed broiler farm, and the necessity of addressing the environmental impacts. Implementing sustainable agricultural practices could lead to more ecological poultry production, contributing to global efforts in climate change mitigation.

A simple mathematical method to estimate ammonia emission from in-house windrowing of poultry litter

Abstract:In-house windrowing between flocks is an emerging sanitary management practice to partially disinfect the built-up litter in broiler houses. However, this practice may also increase ammonia (NH3) emission from the litter due to the increase in litter temperature. The objectives of this study were to develop mathematical models to estimate NH3 emission rates from broiler houses practicing in-house windrowing between flocks. Equations to estimate mass-transfer areas form different shapes windrowed litter (triangular, rectangular, and semi-cylindrical prisms) were developed. Using these equations, the heights of windrows yielding the smallest mass-transfer area were estimated. Smaller mass-transfer area is preferred as it reduces both emission rates and heat loss. The heights yielding the minimum mass-transfer area were 0.8 and 0.5 m for triangular and rectangular windrows, respectively. Only one height (0.6 m) was theoretically possible for semi-cylindrical windrows because the base and the height were not independent. Mass-transfer areas were integrated with published process-based mathematical models to estimate the total house NH3 emission rates during in-house windrowing of poultry litter. The NH3 emission rate change calculated from the integrated model compared well with the observed values except for the very high NH3 initial emission rate from mechanically disturbing the litter to form the windrows. This approach can be used to conveniently estimate broiler house NH3 emission rates during in-house windrowing between flocks by simply measuring litter temperatures.
