Abstract:The preclinical studies using animal models play a very important role in the evaluation of facial nerve regeneration. Good models need to recapitulate the distance and time for axons to regenerate in humans. Compared with the most used rodent animals, the structure of facial nerve in mini-pigs shares more similarities with humans in microanatomy. To evaluate the feasibility of repairing facial nerve defects by collagen scaffolds combined with ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), 10-mm-long gaps were made in the buccal branch of mini-pigs' facial nerve. Three months after surgery, electrophysiological assessment and histological examination were performed to evaluate facial nerve regeneration. Immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscope observation showed that collagen scaffolds with collagen binding (CBD)-CNTF could promote better axon regeneration, Schwann cell migration, and remyelination at the site of implant device than using scaffolds alone. Electrophysiological assessment also showed higher recovery rate in the CNTF group. In summary, combination of collagen scaffolds and CBD-CNTF showed promising effects on facial nerve regeneration in mini-pig models.

Abstract:The molecular forms of GnRH in amphibia have not been characterized structurally. An antiserum to mammalian GnRH that shows appreciable cross-reactivity with chicken GnRH-I ([Gln8]GnRH), chicken GnRH-II ([His5,Trp7,Tyr8]GnRH), and salmon GnRH ([Trp7, Leu8]GnRH) was used in a RIA to detect GnRH-related peptides in an extract of the brain of the European green frog, Rana ridibunda. Two peptides were purified to apparent homogeneity, and determination of their primary structures showed that they are identical to mammalian GnRH and chicken GnRH-II. Salmon GnRH and lamprey GnRH-I ([Tyr3,Leu5,Glu6,Trp7,Lys8]GnRH) were not identified in this species of frog. Immunocytochemical analysis using specific antisera has identified regions of the frog diencephalon and telencephalon in which chicken GnRH-II and mammalian GnRH are localized to different populations of neurons. This differential distribution suggests distinct physiological roles for the two forms of GnRH in amphibia.

Abstract:Facial nerve injury caused by traffic accidents or operations may reduce the quality of life in patients, and recovery following the injury presents unique clinical challenges. Glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is important in nerve regeneration; however, soluble GDNF rapidly diffuses into body fluids, making it difficult to achieve therapeutic efficacy. In this work, we developed a rat tail derived collagen conduit to connect nerve defects in a simple and safe manner. GDNF was immobilized in the collagen conduits via chemical conjugation to enable controlled release of GDNF. The GDNF delivery system prevented rapid diffusion from the site without impacting bioactivity of GDNF; degradation of the collagen conduit was inhibited owing to the chemical conjugation. The artificial nerve conduit was then used to examine facial nerve regeneration across a facial nerve defect. Following transplantation, the artificial nerve conduits degraded gradually without causing dislocations and serious inflammation, with good integration into the host tissue. Functional and histological tests indicated that the artificial nerve conduits were able to guide the axons to grow through the defect, reaching the distal stumps. The degree of nerve regeneration in the group that was treated with the artificial nerve conduit approached that of the autograft group, and exceeded that of the other conduit grafted groups.
Improved Axonal Regeneration of Transected Spinal Cord Mediated by Multichannel Collagen Conduits Functionalized with Neurotrophin-3 Gene

Abstract:Functionalized biomaterial scaffolds targeted at improving axonal regeneration by enhancing guided axonal growth provide a promising approach for the repair of spinal cord injury. Collagen neural conduits provide structural guidance for neural tissue regeneration, and in this study it is shown that these conduits can also act as a reservoir for sustained gene delivery. Either a G-luciferase marker gene or a neurotrophin-3-encoding gene, complexed to a non-viral, cyclized, PEGylated transfection vector, was loaded within a multichannel collagen conduit. The complexed genes were then released in a controlled fashion using a dual release system both in vitro and in vivo. For evaluation of their biological performance, the loaded conduits were implanted into the completely transected rat thoracic spinal cord (T8–T10). Aligned axon regeneration through the channels of conduits was observed one month post-surgery. The conduits delivering neurotrophin-3 polyplexes resulted in significantly increased neurotrophin-3 levels in the surrounding tissue and a statistically higher number of regenerated axons versus the control conduits (P<0.05). This study suggests that collagen neural conduits delivering a highly effective non-viral therapeutic gene may hold promise for repair of the injured spinal cord.
The Bridging Effect of Controlled-Release Glial Cell-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Microcapsules within Nerve Conduits on Rat Facial Nerve Regeneration

Abstract:Objectives. The study is aimed at exploring the effect of the controlled release of the glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) on nerve regeneration. Methods. The PLGA/chitosan composite nerve conduit was used to bridge the dissected trunk of the rat facial nerve. GDNF microcapsules were loaded into the nerve conduit. Nine weeks after surgery, the facial nerve zygomatic and buccal branches were labeled with fluorescent indicators. The incorrectly grown facial neurons were reversed and counted. The facial nerve functional recovery was assessed by measuring the maximum evoked potential. Results. The nerve conduit was filled with different regenerating factors, such as the GDNF, GDNF microcapsules, or saline (control). The number of incorrectly regenerated neurons was lower with the nerve conduits filled with GDNF microcapsules than with those supplied with just the GDNF. However, neither the GDNF nor GDNF microcapsules affected the number of regenerated neurons. The functional recovery of the facial nerve was the best, with the nerve conduit filled with GDNF microcapsules closest to the healthy uncut facial nerve. Conclusion. The stable slow-release GNDF microcapsule inside the biodegradable nerve conduit can reduce the extent of incorrect growth of the facial nerve neuron when bridging the dissected rat facial nerve trunk. The technique has a good effect on functional nerve recovery.

Abstract:Facial nerves are fragile and easily injured, for example, by traffic accidents or operations. Facial nerve injury drastically reduces the quality of life in affected patients, and its treatment presents clinical challenges. A promising therapeutic strategy includes nerve conduits with appropriate fillers capable of guiding nerve regeneration. In this study, a three-dimensional hierarchically aligned fibrin nanofiber hydrogel (AFG) assembled via electrospinning and molecular self-assembly was first used to mimic the architecture of the native fibrin cable, which is similar to the nerve extracellular matrix (ECM). AFG as a substrate in chitosan tubes (CST) was used to bridge a 7 mm-long gap in a rabbit buccal branch facial nerve defect model. The results showed that AFG and CST showed good compatibility to support the adhesion, activity, and proliferation of Schwann cells (SCs). Further morphological, histological, and functional analyses demonstrated that the regenerative outcome of AFG-prefilled CST was close to that of autologous nerve grafts and superior to that of CST alone or CSTs prefilled with random fibrin nanofiber hydrogel (RFG), which indicated that AFG-prefilled CST markedly improved axonal regeneration with enhanced remyelination and functional recovery, thus showing great potential for clinical application for facial nerve regeneration treatments.

Abstract:Nerve conduit provides a promising strategy for nerve regeneration, and the proper microenvironment in the lumen could improve the regeneration. Our previous work had demonstrated that linear ordered collagen scaffold (LOCS) could effectively guide the oriented growth of axons. Laminin is known as an important nerve growth promoting factor and can facilitate the growth cone formation. In addition, ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) can effectively improve the nerve regeneration after nerve injuries. However, in practice, diffusion caused by the body fluids is the major obstacle in their applications. To retain CNTF or BDNF on the scaffolds, we produced collagen binding CNTF (CBD-CNTF), collagen binding BDNF (CBD-BDNF) and laminin binding CNTF (LBD-CNTF), laminin binding BDNF (LBD-BDNF) respectively. In this work, we developed laminin modified LOCS fibers (L × LOCS) by chemical cross-linking LOCS fibers with laminin. Collagen binding or laminin binding neurotrophic factors were combined with LOCS or L × LOCS, and then filled them into the collagen nerve conduit. They were found to guide the ordered growth of axons, and improve the nerve functional recovery in the rat facial nerve transection model. The combination of CNTF and BDNF greatly enhanced the facial nerve regeneration and functional recovery.

Abstract:Facial nerve injury is a common clinical condition that leads to disfigurement and emotional distress in the affected individuals, and the recovery presents clinical challenges. Tissue engineering is the standard method to repair nerve defects. However, nerve regeneration is still not satisfactory because of poor neovascularization after implantation, especially for the long-segment nerve defects. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the potential of chitosan tubes inoculated with stem cell factor (SCF) and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in facial nerve-vascularized regeneration. In the in vitro experiment, DPSCs were isolated, cultured, and then identified. The optimal concentration of SCF was screened by CCK8. Cytoskeleton and living-cell staining, migration, CCK8 test, and neural differentiation assays were performed, revealing that SCF promoted the biological activity of DPSCs. Surprisingly, SCF increased the neural differentiation of DPSCs. The migration and angiogenesis experiments were carried out to show that SCF promoted the angiogenesis and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). In the facial nerve, 7 mm defects of New Zealand white rabbits, hematoxylin-eosin (HE), immunohistochemistry, toluidine blue staining, and transmission electron microscopy observation were performed at 12 weeks postsurgery to show more nerve fibers and better myelin sheath in the SCF + DPSC group. In addition, the whisker movements, Masson's staining, and western blot assays were performed, demonstrating functional repair and that the expression level of CD31 protein in the group SCF + DPSCs was relatively close to that in the group Autograft. In summary, chitosan tubes inoculated with SCF and DPSCs increased neurovascularization and provided an effective method for repairing facial nerve defects, indicating great promise for clinical application.

Repair of facial nerve crush injury in rabbits using collagen plus basic fibroblast growth factor.

Abstract:Facial nerves are frequently crushed or cut during facial surgery. In this study, the feasibility of repairing facial nerves in rabbits after crush or cut off injury was evaluated using collagen conduits with A collagen-binding domain (CBD)-human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). A total of 39 six-month-old New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups of 9 rabbits, and bilateral crush or cut off injuries were made on each animal's face. 3 rabbits were classified as the healthy control. The facial nerves were cut or crushed and then were either untreated or wrapped with a collagen conduit plus bFGF. At the 15, 30, and 90 days after the injury, three rabbits in each group were sacrificed. Regeneration of the injured facial nerve was evaluated using electrophysiological examination (compound muscle action potentials), scanning electron microscopy, and histological observation. The results suggested that using collagen conduits with recombinant proteins CBD-bFGF to repair facial nerves with crush or cut off injuries promoted functional facial nerve recovery. Construction of a Mineralized Collagen Nerve Conduit for Peripheral Nerve Injury Repair.

Abstract:Abstract A new nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) named MC@Col containing Type I collagen (Col) and mineralized collagen (MC) was developed, enhancing mechanical and degradation behavior. The physicochemical properties, the mechanical properties and in vitro degradation behavior were all evaluated. The adhesion and proliferation of Schwann cells (SCs) were observed. In the in vivo experiment, MC@Col NGC and other conduits including Col, chitosan (CST) and polycaprolactone (PCL) conduit were implanted to repair a 10-mm-long Sprague-Dawley rat’s sciatic nerve defect. Histological analyses, morphological analyses, electrophysiological analyses and further gait analyses were all evaluated after implantation in 12 weeks. The strength and degradation performance of the MC@Col NGC were improved by the addition of MC in comparison with pure Col NGC. In vitro cytocompatibility evaluation revealed that the SCs had good viability, attachment and proliferation in the MC@Col. In in vivo results, the regenerative outcomes of MC@Col NGC were close to those by an autologous nerve graft in some respects, but superior to those by Col, CST and PCL conduits. The MC@Col NGC exhibited good mechanical performance as well as biocompatibility to bridge nerve gap and guide nerve regeneration, thus showing great promising potential as a new type of conduit in clinical applications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To construct a biodegradable PLGA nerve conduit (NC) filled with NSCs in order to improve facial nerve regeneration. METHOD SD rats were subjected to right facial nerve transection, and PLGA NCs filled with NSCs were used to bridge the nerve gap. Facial nerve regeneration was assessed 4 and 12 weeks after surgery, through electrophysiological testing, and morphometric analysis of axons. RESULT Nerve action potential amplitude, and axonal area were significantly greater in the NSCs group than the empty NC group. CONCLUSION NSCs transplantation may improve regeneration of the facial nerve.

Abstract:Previous studies showed that acellular nerve allografts (ANAs) have been successfully utilized in repairing peripheral nerve defects, and exosomes produced by stem cells are useful in supporting axon regrowth after peripheral nerve injury. In the present study, exosomes from hair follicle epidermal neural crest stem cells (EPI-NCSCs-Exos) combined with ANAs were used to bridge facial nerve defects. EPI-NCSCs-Exos were isolated by ultracentrifuge, and were identified. After co-culture, EPI-NCSCs-Exos were internalized into dorsal root ganglions (DRGs) and schwann cells (SCs) in vitro, respectively. EPI-NCSCs-Exos elongate the length of axons and dendrites of DRGs, and accelerated the proliferation and migration of SCs, and increased neurotrophic factor expression of SCs as well. The next step was to randomly and equally assign 24 SD male rats into three groups, the autograft group, the ANA group, and the ANA + EPI-NCSCs-Exos group. Each rat manufactured a 5-mm gap of facial nerve defect and immediately bridged by the corresponding transplants, respectively. After surgery, behavioral changes and electrophysiological testing of each rat were observed and assessed. At 90 days postoperatively, the retrogradely fluorescent tracer-labeled neurons were successfully observed on the injured side in the three groups. Morphological changes of facial nerve regeneration were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy and semi-thin toluidine blue staining. The results showed that nerve fiber density, nerve fiber diameter, and myelin sheath thickness in the ANA group were significantly worse than those in the other two groups (P < 0.05). No significant difference in nerve fiber density and myelin sheath thickness were observed between the autograft group and the ANA + EPI-NCSCs-Exos group (P > 0.05). Our data indicated that EPI-NCSCs-Exos facilitate ANAs to bridge facial nerve defects and have the potential to replace autograft therapy in clinical.

Abstract:The facial nerve regenerative efficacy of a nerve conduit was evaluated in a rat model.Reinnervation was confirmed at 13 weeks postoperatively.This study demonstrated the efficacy of the conduit for facial nerve reconstruction.A bioabsorbable collagen conduit (Renerve™) filled with collagen filaments is currently approved as an artificial nerve conduit in Japan and is mainly used for connecting and repairing peripheral nerves after traumatic nerve injury. However, there are few reports on its applications for reconstructing and repairing the facial nerve. The present study evaluated the efficacy of the conduit on promoting nerve regeneration in a murine model with a nerve defect at the buccal branch of the facial nerve.Under inhalational anesthesia and microscopic guidance, the buccal branch of the left facial nerve in an 8-week-old Lewis rat was exposed, and a 7 mm gap was created in the nerve. The gap was then connected with either the nerve conduits (NC group) or an autologous nerve graft (the autograft group). At 13 weeks after the procedure, we compared the histological and physiological regenerations in the both groups.We found compound muscle action potential amplitude is significantly larger in the autograft group (2.8 ± 1.4 mV) than in NC group (1.3 ± 0.5 mV) (p < 0.05). The number of myelinated fibers of the autograft group was higher (3634 ± 1645) than that of NC group (1112 ± 490) (p < 0.01). The fiber diameter of the autograft group (4.8 ± 1.9 μm) was larger than that of NC group (3.8 ± 1.4 μm) (p < 0.05). The myelin thickness of the autograft group was thicker than that of NC group (0.6 ± 0.3 μm vs. 0.4 ± 0.1 μm) (p < 0.05). G-ratio of the autograft group (0.74 ± 0.19) was lower than that of NC group (0.79 ± 0.10) (p < 0.05).This study demonstrated the efficacy of collagen nerve conduit for facial nerve reconstruction following nerve injury. However, the effectiveness of the conduit on the promotion of nerve regeneration was inferior to that of the autograft.

Abstract:Abstract The implantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) in artificial scaffolds for peripheral nerve injuries draws much attention. NSCs were ex-vivo expanded in hyaluronic acid (HA)-collagen composite with neurotrophin-3, and BrdU-labeled NSCs conduit was implanted onto the ends of the transected facial nerve of rabbits. Electromyography demonstrated a progressive decrease of current threshold and increase of voltage amplitude in de-innervated rabbits after implantation for one, four, eight and 12 weeks compared to readouts derived from animals prior to nerve transection. The most remarkable improvement, observed using Electrophysiology, was of de-innervated rabbits implanted with NSCs conduit as opposed to de-innervated counterparts with and without the implantation of HA-collagen, NSCs and HA-collagen, and HA-collagen and neurotrophin-3. Histological examination displayed no nerve fiber in tissue sections of de-innervated rabbits. The arrangement and S-100 immunoreactivity of nerve fibers in the tissue sections of normal rabbits and injured rabbits after implantation of NSCs scaffold for 12 weeks were similar, whereas disorderly arranged minifascicles of various sizes were noted in the other three arms. BrdU + cells were detected at 12 weeks post-implantation. Data suggested that NSCs embedded in HA-collagen biomaterial could facilitate re-innervations of damaged facial nerve and the artificial conduit of NSCs might offer a potential treatment modality to peripheral nerve injuries.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the feasibility of using polyporus silk fibroin as a kind of novel material for facial nerve regeneration.METHODS:The porous silk fibroin conduit was used in the reconstruction of a 5 mm facial nerve gap of SD rat. Chitosan conduit was taken as control group. General observation, electrophysiological study, histological study and image analysis were performed 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks postoperatively.RESULTS:The facial nerve of SD rat regenerated successfully as time passed through. Mean CAP percentage of regenerated nerve in SF conduit was 24.94% +/- 5.73% 8 weeks postoperatively, which had no statistical significance with that of chitosan conduit group (P = 1.125). And the average number of myelinated myelinated nerve fibers in SF conduit was 62. 5 +/- 6. 3, which had statistical significance with that in chitosan conduit group (P = 0.016).CONCLUSIONS:The porous silk fibroin conduit could effectively repair facial nerve defect and improve peripheral nerve functional recovery.

It has been demonstrated in our previous work that native human NT-3 fused with a collagen-binding domain (CBD-NT-3) could bind to collagen, specifically to exert neurotrophic effects, promoting axonal regeneration. To evaluate the effect of CBD-NT-3 in inducing facial nerve regeneration and functional recovery, the differing effects of CBD-NT-3 and native neurotrophin-3 (NAT-NT-3) were observed using the results of facial nerve functional recovery, electrophysiological testing, and axonal and myelin changes in a rat model of facial nerve crush injury. The rats were injected in the epineurium in crushed fibers of the facial nerve with CBD-NT-3, NAT-NT-3, and PBS respectively. After 4 weeks, the CBD-NT-3 group demonstrated significantly more ordered growth of axons and nerve functional recovery than the NAT-NT-3 group. The results suggest that CBD-NT-3 considerably enhances facial nerve regeneration and functional recovery.
Enhancing facial nerve regeneration with scaffold-free conduits engineered using dental pulp stem cells and their endogenous, aligned extracellular matrix

Abstract:Objective: Engineered nerve conduits must simultaneously enhance axon regeneration and orient axon extension to effectively restore function of severely injured peripheral nerves. The dental pulp contains a population of stem/progenitor cells that endogenously express neurotrophic factors (NTFs), growth factors known to induce axon repair. We have previously generated scaffold-free dental pulp stem/progenitor cell (DPSC) sheets comprising an aligned extracellular matrix (ECM). Through the intrinsic NTF expression of DPSCs and the topography of the aligned ECM, these sheets both induce and guide axon regeneration. Here, the capacity of bioactive conduits generated using these aligned DPSC sheets to restore function in critical-sized nerve injuries in rodents was evaluated. Approach: Scaffold-free nerve conduits were formed by culturing DPSCs on a substrate with aligned microgrooves, inducing the cells to align and deposit an aligned ECM. The sheets were then detached from the substrate and assembled into scaffold-free cylindrical tissues. Main results: In vitro analyses confirmed that scaffold-free DPSC conduits maintained an aligned ECM and had uniformly distributed NTF expression. Implanting the aligned DPSC conduits across critical-sized defects in the buccal branch of rat facial nerves resulted in the regeneration of a fascicular nerve-like structure and myelinated axon extension across the injury site. Furthermore, compound muscle action potential and stimulated whisker movement measurements revealed that the DPSC conduit treatment promoted similar functional recovery compared to the clinical standard of care, autografts. Significance: This study demonstrates that scaffold-free aligned DPSC conduits supply trophic and guidance cues, key design elements needed to successfully promote and orient axon regeneration. Consequently, these conduits restore function in nerve injuries to similar levels as autograft treatments. These conduits offer a novel bioactive approach to nerve repair capable of improving clinical outcomes and patient quality of life.

Abstract:(1) Objective: In order to evaluate the effect of a pre-induced mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-coated cellulose/collagen nanofibrous nerve conduit on facial nerve regeneration in a rat model both in vitro and in vivo. (2) Methods: After fabrication of the cellulose/collagen nanofibrous conduit, its lumen was coated with either MSCs or pre-induced MSCs. The nerve conduit was then applied to the defective main trunk of the facial nerve. Rats were randomly divided into three treatment groups (n = 10 in each): cellulose/collagen nanofiber (control group), cellulose/collagen nanofiber/MSCs (group I), and cellulose/collagen nanofiber/pre-induced MSCs (group II). (3) Results Fibrillation of the vibrissae of each group was observed, and action potential threshold was compared 8 weeks post-surgery. Histopathological changes were also observed. Groups I and II showed better recovery of vibrissa fibrillation than the control group. (4) Conclusions: Group II, treated with the pre-induced MSC-coated cellulose/collagen nanofibrous nerve conduit, showed the highest degree of recovery based on functional and histological evaluations.

Repairing whole facial nerve defects with xenogeneic acellular nerve grafts in rhesus monkeys

Abstract:Acellular nerve allografts conducted via chemical extraction have achieved satisfactory results in bridging whole facial nerve defects clinically, both in terms of branching a single trunk and in connecting multiple branches of an extratemporal segment. However, in the clinical treatment of facial nerve defects, allogeneic donors are limited. In this experiment, we exposed the left trunk and multiple branches of the extratemporal segment in six rhesus monkeys and dissected a gap of 25 mm to construct a monkey model of a whole left nerve defect. Six monkeys were randomly assigned to an autograft group or a xenogeneic acellular nerve graft group. In the autograft group, the 25-mm whole facial nerve defect was immediately bridged using an autogenous ipsilateral great auricular nerve, and in the xenogeneic acellular nerve graft group, this was done using a xenogeneic acellular nerve graft with trunk-branches. Examinations of facial symmetry, nerve-muscle electrophysiology, retrograde transport of labeled neuronal tracers, and morphology of the regenerated nerve and target muscle at 8 months postoperatively showed that the faces of the monkey appeared to be symmetrical in the static state and slightly asymmetrical during facial movement, and that they could actively close their eyelids completely. The degree of recovery from facial paralysis reached House-Brackmann grade II in both groups. Compound muscle action potentials were recorded and orbicularis oris muscles responded to electro-stimuli on the surgical side in each monkey. FluoroGold-labeled neurons could be detected in the facial nuclei on the injured side. Immunohistochemical staining showed abundant neurofilament-200-positive axons and soluble protein-100-positive Schwann cells in the regenerated nerves. A large number of mid-graft myelinated axons were observed via methylene blue staining and a transmission electron microscope. Taken together, our data indicate that xenogeneic acellular nerve grafts from minipigs are safe and effective for repairing whole facial nerve defects in rhesus monkeys, with an effect similar to that of autologous nerve transplantation. Thus, a xenogeneic acellular nerve graft may be a suitable choice for bridging a whole facial nerve defect if no other method is available. Abstract:Conclusions: Schwann cells transfected by GDNF genes + PLGA were superior to Schwann cells + PLGA and direct anastomesis. This is a new and effective strategy for repair of facial nerve defects. Objective: To evaluate the effect of bioactive artificial nerve conduits in the repair of facial nerve defects in Sprague-Dawley rats. Materials and methods: Schwann cells were harvested and transfected with PcDNA3.1 (+)/GDNF. After injection with Schwann cells, the conduits were cultured in the culture medium for 2 weeks. Thirty female Sprague-Dawley rats were selected and randomly divided into three groups (A, B, and C), which were treated as follows: A, direct anastomesis; B, Schwann cells + PLGA conduits; C, Schwann cells transfected by GDNF genes + PLGA conduits. General observation, electrophysiological study, histological study, and image analysis were performed 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months postoperatively. Results: The recovery of nerve regeneration and electrophysiological results in group C were superior to those in groups A and B; the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01).
