Abstract:Ultrathin two‐dimensional (2D) metallic materials with single‐ or few‐atom thickness, emerging as one new class of 2D materials, have attracted extraordinary interest due to their fantastic physical and chemical properties, and great potential applications in catalysis, biomedicine, electronics/optoelectronic devices, sensing, and energy storage. In contrast with graphene‐like 2D layered materials, facile fabrication of ultrathin 2D metallic materials remains a great challenge owing to their intrinsic tendency of metals to form three‐dimensional (3D) close‐packed structures. This article reviews and summarizes the recent progress‐both experimental and theoretical‐ in the synthesis of 2D metallic nanosheets from mono‐elemental metals to chemically complex alloys and offers perspectives and challenges on the future developments in this field.

Abstract:The advent of graphene opens up the research into two-dimensional (2D) materials, which are considered revolutionary materials. Due to its unique geometric structure, graphene exhibits a series of exotic physical and chemical properties. In addition, single-element-based 2D materials (Xenes) have garnered tremendous interest. At present, 16 kinds of Xenes (silicene, borophene, germanene, phosphorene, tellurene, etc.) have been explored, mainly distributed in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth main groups. The current methods to prepare monolayers or few-layer 2D materials include epitaxy growth, mechanical exfoliation, and liquid phase exfoliation. Although two Xenes (aluminene and indiene) have not been synthesized due to the limitations of synthetic methods and the stability of Xenes, other Xenes have been successfully created via elaborate artificial design and synthesis. Focusing on elemental 2D materials, this review mainly summarizes the recently reported work about tuning the electronic, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties of Xenes via surface modifications, achieved using controllable approaches (doping, adsorption, strain, intercalation, phase transition, etc.) to broaden their applications in various fields, including spintronics, electronics, optoelectronics, superconducting, photovoltaics, sensors, catalysis, and biomedicines. These advances in the surface modification of Xenes have laid a theoretical and experimental foundation for the development of 2D materials and their practical applications in diverse fields.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials (sheet-like materials with few-atoms thickness and lateral size above 100 nm) have always aroused scientists' interests since 2004 when Novoselov et al successfully exfoliated graphene from graphite using Scotch tape. It is some unique characters of 2D nanomaterials such as the confinement of electrons in two dimensions in the ultrathin region, strong in-plane covalent bond and atomic thickness, ultra-high specific surface area and exposed atoms that enable 2D nanomaterials to show excellent properties in electrics, catalysis and mechanics. Recently, amorphous materials (varied from crystal materials by atomic arrangement) have demonstrated high performance in mechanics, catalysis and magnetic owing to their unique long-range atomic disorder arrangements. Thus, the 2D amorphous nanomaterials inspire a new path to the study of high performance 2D materials. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in 2D amorphous nanomaterials, whose synthetic methods and potential applications in fields of catalysis, energy storage and mechanics discussed in details. The vital blocking mechanisms for synthesis of 2D amorphous nanomaterials and their performance-structure relationship are focused on. Finally, we conclude the review with our personal insights and provide a critical outlook for the development of 2D amorphous nanomaterials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional nanomaterials (2D NMs), consisting of atoms or a near-atomic thickness with infinite transverse dimensions, possess unique structures, excellent physical properties, and tunable surface chemistry. They exhibit significant potential for development in the fields of sensing, renewable energy, and catalysis. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the latest research findings on the preparation and application of 2D NMs. First, the article introduces the common synthesis methods of 2D NMs from both "top-down" and "bottom-up" perspectives, including mechanical exfoliation, ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation, ion intercalation, chemical vapor deposition, and hydrothermal techniques. In terms of the applications of 2D NMs, this study focuses on their potential in gas sensing, lithium-ion batteries, photodetection, electromagnetic wave absorption, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. Additionally, based on existing research, the article looks forward to the future development trends and possible challenges of 2D NMs. The significance of this work lies in its systematic summary of the recent advancements in the preparation methods and applications of 2D NMs.

Abstract:Graphene, as an intermediate phase between fullerene and carbon nanotube, has aroused much interests among the scientific community due to its outstanding electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties.With excellent electrical conductivity of 6000 S/cm, which is independent on chirality, graphene is a promising material for high-performance nanoelectronics, transparent conductor, as well as polymer composites. On account of its Young’s Modulus of 1 TPa and ultimate strength of 130 GPa, isolated graphene sheet is considered to be among the strongest materials ever measured. Comparable with the single-walled carbon nanotube bundle,graphene has a thermal conductivity of 5000 W/（m·K）, which suggests a potential application of graphene in polymer matrix for improving thermal properties of the graphene/polymer composite. Furthermore, graphene exhibits a very high surface area, up to a value of 2630 m~2/g. All of these outstanding properties suggest a wide application for this nanometer-thick, two-dimensional carbon material. This review article presents an overview of the significant advancement in graphene research: preparation, functionalization as well as the properties of graphene will be discussed. In addition, the feasibility and potential applications of graphene in areas, such as sensors, nanoelectronics and nanocomposites materials, will also be reviewed.

Abstract:The discovery of graphene attracted great interest because of the potential prospects of which in both basic and applied research. And other kinds of 2D graphene analogues, including hexagonal BN, carbon nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, etc. derived from their layered bulk crystals, have also been extensively investigated because of their promising characters and potential applications. It is expected that these 2D nanosheets, in bulk or in composite materials, could maintain their extraordinary properties. However, the irreversible aggregation or accumulating of 2D nanosheets due to the strong van der Waals interactions, extremely decrease their accessible surface area. More recently, with the recognization of the tremendous interest of these 2D structures, scientists noticed that the performance of certain devices could be significantly improved by utilizing 3D architectures and/or aerogels due to the increase of unit activity of the materials. This review summarizes different synthetic process (such as assembly, chemical vapor deposition direct synthesis, in-situ confinement growth and so on) used for preparation of 2D graphene analogues based 3D architectures and/or aerogels containing either any or their composites. And the different fields of application for energy storage (including both supercapacitor and lithium ion battery applications), electrocatalysis, sensing and others are provided a significant enhancement in the efficacy as compared to their 2D analogues or even opened the path to novel application. Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D) nanomaterials such as transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) and graphene have attracted extensive interest as emergent materials, owing to their excellent properties that favor their future use in electronic devices, catalysis, optics, and biological- or energy-relevant areas. However, 2D nanosheets tend to easily restack and condense, which weakens their performance in many of these applications. Assembling these 2D nanosheets as building blocks for three-dimensional(3D) architectures not only maintains the intrinsic performances of the 2D nanostructures but also synergistically makes use of the advantages of the 3D microstructures to improve the overall material properties. In this critical review, we will highlight recent developments of sundry 2D nanosheet-assembled 3D architectures, including their design, synthesis, and potential applications. Their controllable syntheses, novel structures, and potential applications will be systematically explained, analyzed, and summarized. In the end, we will offer some perspective on the challenges facing future advancement of this field.

In order to further tune their properties and then broaden their application domain, large efforts have been devoted into engineering the structures of 2D TMD nanosheets at atomic scale, especially the alloying technology. Alloying different 2D TMD nanosheets into 2D alloys not only offers the opportunities to fine-tune their physical/chemical properties, but also opens up some unique properties, which are highly desirable for wide applications including electronics, optoelectronics, and catalysis. Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures have been attracting tremendous interest for a variety of applications, including bio-inspired applications, due to their fascinating electronic, mechanical and optical properties. Especially, graphene and other 2D or quasi-2D nanostructures show excellent conductivity and flexibility. Herein, we highlight the recent impressive progress concerning the use of two representative types of 2D and quasi-2D nanostructures, graphenebased nanosheets and ultrathin polymeric nanosheets, as conductive or/and flexible elements to engineer three dimensional (3D) tissues. The results feature the unique potential of these 2D and quasi-2D nanostructures in the biomaterial tissue engineering research field.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention in nanomaterials research because of their unique physical and chemical properties. This paper examines the research background, core properties, main application areas, and future prospects of 2D materials. Through a systematic literature review and case studies, this paper summarizes the main advances and challenges in current 2D material research. The research methodology includes a literature review and case study analysis, aiming to uncover the potential of 2D materials in nanoelectronics, optoelectronic devices, energy storage, and biomedicine. The research questions address the fundamental properties of 2D materials, their practical applications, and strategies to overcome existing challenges. The results indicate that while 2D materials like graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit excellent electronic, optical, and mechanical properties, they still encounter significant challenges in material preparation, performance tuning, and environmental safety. This paper proposes potential solutions and predicts the future applications of 2D materials in emerging technologies. The conclusion asserts that with the continuous discovery of novel 2D materials and technological advancements, 2D materials will play a crucial role in science and industry.

Abstract:The isolation of graphene in 2004 from graphite was a defining moment for the "birth" of a field: two-dimensional (2D) materials. In recent years, there has been a rapidly increasing number of papers focusing on non-graphene layered materials, including transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), because of the new properties and applications that emerge upon 2D confinement. Here, we review significant recent advances and important new developments in 2D materials "beyond graphene". We provide insight into the theoretical modeling and understanding of the van der Waals (vdW) forces that hold together the 2D layers in bulk solids, as well as their excitonic properties and growth morphologies. Additionally, we highlight recent breakthroughs in TMD synthesis and characterization and discuss the newest families of 2D materials, including monoelement 2D materials (i.e., silicene, phosphorene, etc.) and transition metal carbide- and carbon nitride-based MXenes. We then discuss the doping and functionalization of 2D materials beyond graphene that enable device applications, followed by advances in electronic, optoelectronic, and magnetic devices and theory. Finally, we provide perspectives on the future of 2D materials beyond graphene.

Abstract:As one unique group of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, 2D metal nanomaterials have drawn increasing attention owing to their intriguing physiochemical properties and broad range of promising applications. In this Review, we briefly introduce the general synthetic strategies applied to 2D metal nanomaterials, followed by describing in detail the various synthetic methods classified in two categories, i.e. bottom-up methods and top-down methods. After introducing the unique physical and chemical properties of 2D metal nanomaterials, the potential applications of 2D metal nanomaterials in catalysis, surface enhanced Raman scattering, sensing, bioimaging, solar cells, and photothermal therapy are discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this promising research area are proposed.

Abstract:<p>As a new type of two-dimensional (2D) materials, monoelemental 2D materials have the atomic structure similar to graphene, and their excellent optical and electronic properties have potential applications in many fields. To date, many studies based on monoelemental 2D materials have been reported, and excellent performance has been demonstrated in various fields. The monoelemental 2D materials that have been reported so far are mainly distributed in the group IIIA, IVA, VA, and VIA. Because of their structural similarities to graphene, they are commonly referred to as "Xenes." Here, we have comprehensively reviewed the research progress of monoelemental 2D materials. In this review, we explore the structure, properties, and practical applications of these monoelemental 2D materials. First, the classification, structural features, optical properties, electronic characteristics, and regulating mechanism of these monoelemental 2D materials are introduced. Then, the practical application and research progress of monoelemental 2D materials in various fields are reviewed comprehensively, especially including photoelectric catalysis, solar cells, and other energy fields. This review will give readers a more all-sided understanding of monoelemental 2D materials and have some guiding significance for their further development.</p>

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets with atomic thickness have attracted a great deal of research interests, due to their extraordinary optical, electronic and mechanical properties for promising applications, such as sensor, electronics, biomedicine, catalysis and energy storage. However, because of the difficulties in the preparation of atomically thick 2D nanosheets, especially for the materials with non-layered structures, current research interests mainly focused on the limited layered samples. Furthermore, owing to the lack of executable characterization techniques for obtaining accurate structural information of ultra thin 2D nanosheets, it is still challenging to understand the correlations between the atomic/electronic structures and their intrinsic properties. In this review, we focus on the recent progresses in synthetic strategies of ultrathin 2D nanosheets, especially for the materials with non-layered structures, and survey effective methods for the regulation of the electronic structures of these ultrathin 2D nanosheets. In addition, we also highlight the clear structure-property relationships of ultrathin 2D nanosheets and overview their applications in photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, energy storage device, electronic device and biological area. Finally, on the basis of the current progresses, the major challenges and opportunities on ultrathin 2D nanosheets are also presented, which could bring new opportunities for future research in the field of chemistry. Abstract:Elemental 2D materials have attracted a great deal of interest due to their excellent properties for various applications in catalysis, sensing, photonics, intracellular gene regulation, magnetism, superconductivity, and so on. It is broadly accepted that the physicochemical properties are highly associated with their atomic arrangements and coordination. Recent studies have demonstrated that unconventional structures of elemental 2D materials exhibit unexpected physicochemical properties and innovative applications beyond conventional structures. Those unconventional structures bring new life to elemental 2D materials and deserve special attention. However, there are considerable challenges to controllably prepare them due to their metastable characters. Herein, their synthetic strategies are focused on to shed light on the reasonable design of new structures with special atomic arrangements to open up tremendous opportunities for expanding their functionalities and potential applications. In addition, the correlations among the types of unconventional structures, the element types, and corresponding synthetic strategies are uncovered. Finally, based on the achievements in the representative studies, some prospects and potential opportunities for extending the scope of elemental 2D materials with unconventional structures and potentially distinctive applications are provided. Recent studies have demonstrated that unconventional structures of elemental 2D material exhibit unexpected physicochemical properties and innovative applications beyond conventional structures, which deserve special attention. This perspective is devoted to focusing on their synthetic strategies for the unconventional structure to shed light on the reasonable design new structures with special atomic arrangements to expand their functionalities and potential applications.
