Abstract:Two types of exploratory touch including active sliding and passive sliding are usually encountered in the daily life. The friction behavior of the human finger against the surface of objects is important in tactile perception. The neural mechanisms correlating to tribological behavior are not fully understood. This study investigated the tactile response of active and passive finger friction characterized with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The friction test and fNIRS test were performed simultaneously using the tactile stimulus of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) specimens. Results showed that the sliding modes did not obviously influence the friction property of skin. While three cortex regions were activated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), showing a higher activation level of passive sliding. This revealed that the tribological performance was not a simple parameter to affect tactile perception, and the difference in cortical hemodynamic activity of active and passive touch was also recognised. The movement-related blood flow changes revealed the role of PFC in integrating tactile sensation although there was no estimation task on roughness perception.

Abstract:In this work, mechanical vibrotactile stimulation was applied to subjects' left and right wrist skins with equal intensity, and a selective sensation perception task was performed to achieve two types of selections similar to motor imagery Brain-Computer Interface. The proposed system was based on event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS), which had a correlation with processing of afferent inflow in human somatosensory system, and attentional effect which modulated the ERD/ERS. The experiments were carried out on nine subjects (without experience in selective sensation), and six of them showed a discrimination accuracy above 80%, three of them above 95%. Comparative experiments with motor imagery (with and without presence of stimulation) were also carried out, which further showed the feasibility of selective sensation as an alternative BCI task complementary to motor imagery. Specifically there was significant improvement ([Formula: see text]) from near 65% in motor imagery (with and without presence of stimulation) to above 80% in selective sensation on some subjects. The proposed BCI modality might well cooperate with existing BCI modalities in the literature in enlarging the widespread usage of BCI system.

Abstract:Introduction: Thermal feedback technologies have been explored in human-computer interaction to provide secondary information and enhance the overall user experience. Unlike fast-response haptic modalities such as vibration and force feedback, the human brain's processes associated with thermal feedback are not fully understood. Methods: In this study, we utilize electroencephalography (EEG) brain imaging to systematically examine the neural correlates associated with a wide range of thermal stimuli, including 9, 15, 32, and 42°C, during active touch at the fingertip. A custom experimental setup is developed to provide thermal stimulation at the desirable temperature levels. A total of 30 participants are recruited to experience the four levels of thermal stimulation by actively touching a thermal stimulation unit with the index finger while recording brain activities via EEG. Time-frequency analysis and power spectral density (PSD) of the EEG data are utilized to analyze the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. Results: The results show that the delta, theta, and alpha PSDs of 9 and 15°C stimuli are significantly higher than the PSDs of 32 and 42°C in the right frontal area during the early stage of the stimulation, from 282 ms up to 1,108 ms (One-way ANOVA test, Holm-Bonferroni correction, p < 0.05). No significant differences in PSDs are found between 9 and 15°C thermal stimuli or between 32 and 42°C thermal stimuli. Discussion: The findings of this study inform the development of thermal feedback system in human-computer interaction.

Abstract:In this study, cortical oscillatory dynamics with respect to tactile selective sensation tasks were investigated. Subjects were required to perform three tactile attention tasks, prompted by cues presented in random order and while both wrists were simultaneously stimulated: 1) selective sensation of the left hand (SS-L), 2) selective sensation of the right hand (SS-R), 3) bilateral selective sensation (SS-B). Even-related (de)synchronization (ERD/ERS) analysis revealed a clear contralateral activation of somatosensory cortex during the SS-L and SS-R tasks, and a bilateral activation during SS-B tasks. Additionally, we found a clear ERS in occipital region of the brain during all the SS tasks. Diverse activation pattern among SS-L, SS-R and SS-B offers novel brain signals for somatosensory Brain-computer Interfaces.

Abstract:Rendering tactile effects on a touch screen via electrovibration has many potential applications. However, our knowledge on tactile perception of change in friction and the underlying contact mechanics are both very limited. In this study, we investigate the tactile perception and the contact mechanics for a step change in friction under electrovibration during a relative sliding between finger and the surface of a capacitive touchscreen. First, we conduct magnitude estimation experiments to investigate the role of normal force and sliding velocity on the perceived tactile intensity for a step increase and decrease in friction, called as rising friction (RF) and falling friction (FF). To investigate the contact mechanics involved in RF and FF, we then measure the frictional force, the apparent contact area, and the strains acting on the fingerpad during sliding at a constant velocity under three different normal loads using a custom-made experimental set-up. The results show that the participants perceived RF stronger than FF, and both the normal force and sliding velocity significantly influenced their perception. These results are supported by our mechanical measurements; the relative change in friction, the apparent contact area, and the strain in the sliding direction were all higher for RF than those for FF, especially for low normal forces. Taken together, our results suggest that different contact mechanics take place during RF and FF due to the viscoelastic behavior of fingerpad skin, and those differences influence our tactile perception of a step change in friction.

Study of event-related potentials by withdrawal friction on the fingertip

Abstract:Objectives: The lack of understanding about the brain's reaction processes in perceiving touch and separation between skin and object surfaces is a barrier to the development of existing brain-computer interface technologies and virtual haptics. These technologies are limited in their ability to advance. It leaves prosthesis users with a limited amount of tactile information that they can feel. This study aims to determine whether distinct surface aspects of various items trigger different reactions from the brain when friction is removed from the surface. Methods: When friction is suddenly removed from the surface of an item, a technique called event-related potential, (ERP) is used to study the features of people's EEGs. It is done after the subject has actively explored the object's surface. A 64-channels EEG collecting system was utilized to acquire EEG data from the individuals. [Corrections added on 5 December 2022, after first online publication: The preceding sentence has been updated.] The event-related potentials for friction removal were generated using the Oddball paradigm, and the samples consisted of sandpaper with three distinct degrees of roughness. We utilized a total of 20 participants, 10 of whom were male, and 10 of whom were female, with a mean age of 21 years. Results: It was discovered that the P3 component of event-related potentials, which is essential for cognition, was noticeably absent in the friction withdrawal response for various roughnesses. It was the case regardless of whether the surface was smooth or rough. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference between the P1 andP2 components, which suggests that the brain could not recognize the surface properties of objects with varying roughness as the friction withdrawal was being performed. Conclusions: It has been demonstrated that tactile recognition does not occur after friction withdrawal. The findings of this paper could have significant repercussions for future research involving the study of haptic perception and brain-computer interaction in prosthetic hands. It is a step toward future research on the mechanisms underlying human tactile perception, so think of it as preparation.
Effects of Distributed Friction Actuation During Sliding Touch

Abstract:Friction modulation allows for a range of different sensations and textures to be simulated on flat touchscreens, yet is largely unable to render fundamental tactile interactions such as path following or shape discrimination due to lack of spatial force distribution across the fingerpad. In order to expand the range of sensations rendered via friction modulation, in this paper we explore the possibility of applying spatial feedback on the fingerpad via differing friction forces on flat touchscreens. To this end, we fabricated six distinct flat surfaces with different spatial distributions of friction and observed deformation of the fingerpad skin in response to motion along these physical samples. In our study, friction changes that occur sequentially along the sliding direction introduced little transitory spatial warping such as compression or stretching to the fingerpad, suggesting limited perceptual differences in comparison to 'classic' friction modulation. Distributing friction across the direction of motion, however, showed pattern-dependent shearing of the fingertip skin, opening avenues for new sensations and illusions heretofore unachievable on flat touchscreen surfaces.

Abstract:Electroadhesion has emerged as a viable technique for displaying tactile feedback on touch surfaces, particularly capacitive touchscreens found in smartphones and tablets. This involves applying a voltage signal to the conductive layer of the touchscreen to generate tactile sensations on the fingerpads of users. In our investigation, we explore the tactile perception of electroadhesion under DC and AC stimulations. Our tactile perception experiments with 10 participants demonstrate a significantly lower voltage detection threshold for AC signals compared to their DC counterparts. This discrepancy is elucidated by the underlying electro-mechanical interactions between the finger and the voltage-induced touchscreen and considering the response of mechanoreceptors in the fingerpad to electrostatic forces generated by electroadhesion. Additionally, our study highlights the impact of moisture on electroadhesive tactile perception. Participants with moist fingers exhibited markedly higher threshold levels. Our electrical impedance measurements show a substantial reduction in impedance magnitude when sweat is present at the finger-touchscreen interface, indicating increased conductivity. These findings not only contribute to our understanding of tactile perception under electroadhesion but also shed light on the underlying physics. In this regard, the results of this study extend beyond mobile devices to encompass other applications of this technology, including robotics, automation, space missions, and textiles.

Abstract:We investigated forces felt by a bare finger in sliding contact with a textured surface, and how they depend on properties of the surface and contact interaction. Prior research has shed light on haptic texture perception. Nevertheless, how texture-produced forces depend on the properties of a touched object or the way that it is touched is less clear. To address this, we designed an apparatus to accurately measure contact forces between a sliding finger and a textured surface. We fabricated textured surfaces, and measured spatial variations in forces produced as subjects explored the surfaces with a bare finger. We analyzed variations in these force signals, and their dependence on object geometry and contact parameters. We observed a number of phenomena, including transient stick-slip behavior, nonlinearities, phase variations, and large force fluctuations, in the form of aperiodic signal components that proved difficult to model for fine surfaces. Moreover, metrics such as total harmonic distortion and normalized variance decreased as the spatial scale of the stimuli increased. The results of this study suggest that surface geometry and contact parameters are insufficient to account for force production during such interactions. Moreover, the results shed light on perceptual challenges solved by the haptic system during active touch sensing of surface texture.

Abstract:Displaying tactile feedback through a touchscreen via electrovibration has many potential applications in mobile devices, consumer electronics, home appliances, and automotive industry though our knowledge and understanding on the underlying contact mechanics is very limited. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the contact evolution between the human finger and a touchscreen under electrovibration using a robotic set-up and an imaging system. The results show that the effect of electrovibration is only present during full slip but not before slip. Hence, coefficient of friction increases under electrovibration as expected during full slip, but the apparent contact area is significantly smaller during full slip when compared to that of no electrovibration condition. It is suggested that the main cause of the increase in friction during full slip is due to an increase in real contact area and the reduction in apparent area is due to stiffening of the finger skin in tangential direction.

Abstract:Since touchscreens were introduced into mobile devices, interaction directly on the touchscreen replaced interaction with the keyboard. In order to protect touchscreens and improve user experience, touchscreen protectors are widely used. This study selected three different designs of touchscreen protectors with three different levels of friction, and a touchscreen without a protector as a control group. The experiment was divided into two tasks, namely the moving task (including horizontal movement and vertical movement) and the circling tasks (including clockwise movement and counter-clockwise movement). User experience was measured through performance, questionnaires and psychophysiological techniques including electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) measurements. Results reflected that a touchscreen without a protector was most suitable for gesture control to improve performance. Among various types of protectors, the protector with the same friction as a touchscreen, was more suitable to improve performance. Results suggested that protectors with excessive or too little friction cannot improve performance.

Abstract:Integrating tactile feedback through haptic interfaces enhances experiences in virtual and augmented reality. However, electrotactile systems, which stimulate mechanoreceptors directly, often yield inconsistent tactile results due to variations in pressure between the device and the finger. In this study, we present the integration of a transparent electrotactile screen with pressure-sensitive transistors, ensuring highly consistent quantitative haptic sensations. These transistors effectively calibrate tactile variations caused by touch pressure. Additionally, we explore remote-distance tactile stimulations achieved through the interference of electromagnetic waves. We validated tactile perception using somatosensory evoked potentials, monitoring the somatosensory cortex response. Our haptic screen can stimulate diverse electrotactile sensations and demonstrate various tactile patterns, including Morse code and Braille, when integrated with portable smart devices, delivering a more immersive experience. Furthermore, interference of electric fields allows haptic stimulation to facilitate diverse stimulus positioning at lower current densities, extending the reach beyond direct contact with electrodes of our screen.

Abstract:Touch is the first sense among human senses. Not only that, but it is also one of the most important senses that are indispensable. However, compared to sight and hearing, it is often neglected. In particular, since humans use the tactile sense of the skin to recognize and manipulate objects, without tactile sensation, it is very difficult to recognize or skillfully manipulate objects. In addition, the importance and interest of haptic technology related to touch are increasing with the development of technologies such as VR and AR in recent years. So far, the focus is only on haptic technology based on mechanical devices. Especially, there are not many studies on tactile sensation in the field of brain-computer interface based on EEG. There have been some studies that measured the surface roughness of artificial structures in relation to EEG-based tactile sensation. However, most studies have used passive contact methods in which the object moves, while the human subject remains still. Additionally, there have been no EEG-based tactile studies of active skin touch. In reality, we directly move our hands to feel the sense of touch. Therefore, as a preliminary study for our future research, we collected EEG signals for tactile sensation upon skin touch based on active touch and compared and analyzed differences in brain changes during touch and movement tasks. Through time-frequency analysis and statistical analysis, significant differences in power changes in alpha, beta, gamma, and high-gamma regions were observed. In addition, major spatial differences were observed in the sensory-motor region of the brain.

Surface haptic rendering of virtual shapes through change in surface temperature

Abstract:Compared to relatively mature audio and video human-machine interfaces, providing accurate and immersive touch sensation remains a challenge owing to the substantial mechanical and neurophysical complexity of touch. Touch sensations during relative lateral motion between a skin-screen interface are largely dictated by interfacial friction, so controlling interfacial friction has the potential for realistic mimicry of surface texture, shape, and material composition. In this work, we show a large modulation of finger friction by locally changing surface temperature. Experiments showed that finger friction can be increased by ~50% with a surface temperature increase from 23° to 42°C, which was attributed to the temperature dependence of the viscoelasticity and the moisture level of human skin. Rendering virtual features, including zoning and bump(s), without thermal perception was further demonstrated with surface temperature modulation. This method of modulating finger friction has potential applications in gaming, virtual and augmented reality, and touchscreen human-machine interaction.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To inquire about the relationship of p53 gene mutation to the histopathological findings and clinical manifestation in cases of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma(LSCC). METHODS The fresh samples from 60 cases of LSCC were examined. Polymerase chain reaction and silver staining-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and DNA direct sequencing were used to detect the mutation of p53 gene in exons 5-8. RESULTS The mutation rates were 69.2% and 85.3% in patients at clinical stage I-II and stage III-IV respectively (P>0.05). In the well-, moderately- and poorly-differentiated cell of LSCC, the mutation rates were 52.9%, 83.3% and 94.7% respectively (P<0.05). The p53 gene mutation rate of LSCC patients with neck lymph-node metastasis was 96.4%, whereas that of patients without neck lymph-node metastasis was 62.5% (P<0.05). Twenty samples showed positive results in SSCP; 19 samples showed deletion and mutation in codons 125-292 by DNA direct sequencing. CONCLUSION The mutation of p53 gene in exons 5-8 was closely related to cell differentiation and the neck lymph-node metastasis of LSCC, but it was not related to the clinical stages of the LSCC cases.
Blood pressure, white‐coat' pressor responses and cardiovascular risk in placebo‐group patients of the MRC Mild Hypertension trial

Abstract:Objective and patients To study the relationship between blood pressure and cardiovascular risk in 8654 patients randomly assigned to receive placebo in the Medical Research Council Mild Hypertension trial; 339 patients had a cardiovascular event during 5 years of follow-up. Results Tracking of blood pressure and regression of blood pressure to and from the mean were demonstrated. Cardiovascular risk was related independently and positively to blood pressure, smoking and cholesterol, and inversely to low-normal plasma sodium. The relationship with blood pressure was stronger when measurements were made at entry to the trial by nurses and weaker when measurements were made by doctors. Discussion One reason for this finding was that blood pressure increased at entry and, because the rise was greater in females, in whom the risk was lower than in males, a low-risk group predominated in the upper part of the blood pressure distribution. Another reason was that the rise itself conferred little or no cardiovascular risk. This rise might be a ‘white-coat' response, because the increase in blood pressure in individuals correlated with the subsequent decrease after entry. Conclusion If the rise is a white-coat' effect and if, as the present study suggests, it is common and relatively free from risk, then changes are needed in the design of placebo-controlled trials and in the management of hypertension.

Abstract:While there is established evidence supporting the involvement of the sense of touch in various actions, the neural underpinnings of touch and action interplay in a social context remain poorly understood. To prospectively investigate this phenomenon and offer further insights, we employed a combination of motor and sensory components by asking participants to imagine exerting force with the index finger while experiencing their own touch, the touch of one another individual, the touch of a surface, and no touch. Based on the assumption that the patterns of activation in the motor system are similar when action is imagined or actually performed, we proceeded to apply a single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation over the primary motor cortex (M1) while participants engaged in the act of imagination. Touch experience was associated with higher M1 excitability in the presence and in the absence of force production imagination, but only during force production imagination M1 excitability differed among the types of touch: both biological sources, the self-touch and the touch of one other individual, elicited a significant increase in motor system activity when compared to touching a non-living surface or in the absence of touch. A strong correlation between individual touch avoidance questionnaire values and facilitation in the motor system was present while touching another person, indicating a social aspect for touch in action. The present study unveils the motor system correlates when the sensory/motor components of touch are considered in social contexts.

Tactile Roughness Perception of Virtual Gratings by Electrovibration

Abstract:Realistic display of tactile textures on touch screens is a big step forward for haptic technology to reach a wide range of consumers utilizing electronic devices on a daily basis. Since the texture topography cannot be rendered explicitly by electrovibration on touch screens, it is important to understand how we perceive the virtual textures displayed by friction modulation via electrovibration. We investigated the roughness perception of real gratings made of plexiglass and virtual gratings displayed by electrovibration through a touch screen for comparison. In particular, we conducted two psychophysical experiments with 10 participants to investigate the effect of spatial period and the normal force applied by finger on roughness perception of real and virtual gratings in macro size. We also recorded the contact forces acting on the participants' finger during the experiments. The results showed that the roughness perception of real and virtual gratings are different. We argue that this difference can be explained by the amount of fingerpad penetration into the gratings. For real gratings, penetration increased tangential forces acting on the finger, whereas for virtual ones where skin penetration is absent, tangential forces decreased with spatial period. Supporting our claim, we also found that increasing normal force increases the perceived roughness of real gratings while it causes an opposite effect for the virtual gratings. These results are consistent with the tangential force profiles recorded for both real and virtual gratings. In particular, the rate of change in tangential force ($dF_t/dt$) as a function of spatial period and normal force followed trends similar to those obtained for the roughness estimates of real and virtual gratings, suggesting that it is a better indicator of the perceived roughness than the tangential force magnitude.

Abstract:Abstract Background. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is generally applied for tactile feedback in the field of prosthetics. The distinct mechanisms of evoked tactile perception between stimulus patterns in conventional TENS (cTENS) and neuromorphic TENS (nTENS) are relatively unknown. This is the first study to investigate the neurobiological effect of nTENS for cortical functional mechanism in evoked tactile perception. Methods. Twenty-one healthy participants were recruited in this study. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded while the participants underwent a tactile discrimination task. One cTENS pattern (square pattern) and two nTENS patterns (electromyography and single motor unit patterns) were applied to evoke tactile perception in four fingers, including the right and left index and little fingers. EEG was preprocessed and somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) were determined. Then, source-level functional networks based on graph theory were evaluated, including clustering coefficient, path length, global efficiency, and local efficiency in six frequency bands. Main results. Behavioral results suggested that the single motor units (SMUs) pattern of nTENS was the most natural tactile perception. SEPs results revealed that SMU pattern exhibited significant shorter latency in P1 and N1 components than the other patterns, while nTENS patterns have significantly longer latency in P3 component than cTENS pattern. Cortical functional networks showed that the SMU pattern had the lowest short path and highest efficiency in beta and gamma bands. Conclusion. This study highlighted that distinct TENS patterns could affect brain activities. The new characteristics in tactile manifestation of nTENS would provide insights for the application of tactile perception restoration.
