Abstract:The UK breast cancer screening programme based on the recommendations of the Forrest report was phased in from 1988 onwards. It aimed at the early detection of breast cancer in women aged 50-64 years and utilized single medio-lateral oblique view X-ray mammography as the sole screening test, carried out at three-yearly intervals. The report, based mainly on the findings of the HIP and Two County Swedish studies, claims that the method would be highly effective, sensitive and specific, and the cost would be reasonable. It further argued that screening, followed by appropriate treatment, could reduce deaths from breast cancer in women aged 50-64 years by 33 per cent or more.

Abstract:Accident analysis and prevention are helpful to ensure the sustainable development of transportation. The aim of this research was to investigate the factors associated with the severity of low-visibility-related rural single-vehicle crashes. Firstly, a latent class clustering model was implemented to partition the whole-dataset into a relatively homogeneous sub-dataset. Then, a spatial random parameters logit model was established for each dataset to capture unobserved heterogeneity and spatial correlation. Analysis was conducted based on the crash data (2014–2019) from 110 two-lane road segments. The results show that the proposed method is a superior crash severity modeling approach to accommodate the unobserved heterogeneity and spatial correlation. Three variables—seatbelt not used, motorcycle, and collision with fixed object—have a stable positive correlation with crash severity. Motorcycle leads to a 12.8%, 23.8%, and 12.6% increase in the risk of serious crashes in the whole-dataset, cluster 3, and cluster 4, respectively. In the whole-dataset, cluster 2, and cluster 3, the risk of serious crashes caused by seatbelt not used increased by 5.5%, 0.1%, and 30.6%, respectively, and caused by collision with fixed object increased by 33.2%, 1.2%, and 13.2%, respectively. The results can provide valuable information for engineers and policy makers to develop targeted measures.

Abstract:Understanding the heterogeneity in autonomous vehicle (AV) crash patterns is crucial for enhancing the safety and public acceptance of autonomous transportation systems. In this paper, 584 AV collision reports from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (CA DMV) were first extracted and augmented by a highly automatic and fast variable extraction framework. Crash damage severities, classified as none, minor, moderate, and major, were set as the dependent variables. Factors including crash, road, temporal, vehicle, and environment characteristics were identified as potential determinants. To account for the heterogeneity inherent in crash data and identify key factors influencing the damage severity in AV crashes, a methodology integrating the latent class analysis and multinomial logit model was employed. Two heterogeneous clusters were determined based on the skewed distributions of vehicle status and driving mode. The model estimation results indicate a positive association between severe crash damage and some risk factors, such as head-on, intersection, multiple vehicles, dark with street lights, dark without street lights, and early morning. This study also reveals significant differences among the variables influencing the damage severity across two distinct subclasses. Moreover, partitioning the AV crash dataset into heterogeneous subsets facilitates the identification of critical factors that remain obscured when the dataset is analyzed as a whole, such as the evening indicator. This paper not only enhances our understanding of AV crash patterns but also paves the way for safer AV technology.

Abstract:Bicycle-motor vehicle (BMV) crashes have been identified as a major type of traffic accident affecting transportation safety. In order to determine the characteristics of BMV crashes in cold regions, this study presents an analysis using police-reported data from 2015 to 2017 on BMV crashes in Shenyang, China. A two-stage approach integrating latent class analysis (LCA) and the random parameter logit (RP-logit) model is proposed to identify specific crash groups and explore their contributing factors. First, LCA was used to classify data into several homogenous clusters, and then the RP-logit model was established to identify significant factors in the whole data model and the cluster-based model from LCA. The proposed two-stage approach can maximize the heterogeneity effects both among clusters and within clusters. Results show that three significant factors in the cluster-based model are obscured by the whole data model in which male cyclists are associated with a higher risk of fatality, especially in the winter. Additionally, differences exist in the exploration of factors due to the characteristics of clusters; thus, countermeasures for specific crash groups should be implemented. This research can provide references for regulators to develop targeted policies and reduce injury severity in BMV crashes in cold regions.

Abstract:In order to gain a more detailed understanding of novice driver involved crashes, this paper compares the injury severity of at-fault and not-at-fault novice driver involved crashes with the consideration of risky driving behaviours. The crash data of novice drivers in Shenyang, China, from 2012 to 2017 is used. The correlated random parameters logit model with heterogeneity in means is built for the whole dataset, at-fault dataset, and not-at-fault dataset to explore the significant factors determining the injury severity, and obtain insight into hidden and common factors. The hidden factors indicate factors that are only significant in one dataset, while the common factors indicate factors that are significant in two or more datasets. The results show that nine common factors significantly affect injury severity of novice driver involved crashes. Among them, speeding, legal but unsafe driving behaviours, and improper operation are related to risky driving behaviour. Moreover, road type, functional zone, time interval, and conflict and improper passing are hidden factors, among which conflict and improper passing is related to risky driving behaviour. Finally, some valuable insights for regulatory authorities in formulating targeted policies are provided to mitigate the severity of novice drivers involved crashes.

Examining driver injury severity outcomes in rural non-interstate roadway crashes using a hierarchical ordered logit model

Abstract:Rural non-interstate crashes induce a significant amount of severe injuries and fatalities. Examination of such injury patterns and the associated contributing factors is of practical importance. Taking into account the ordinal nature of injury severity levels and the hierarchical feature of crash data, this study employs a hierarchical ordered logit model to examine the significant factors in predicting driver injury severities in rural non-interstate crashes based on two-year New Mexico crash records. Bayesian inference is utilized in model estimation procedure and 95% Bayesian Credible Interval (BCI) is applied to testing variable significance. An ordinary ordered logit model omitting the between-crash variance effect is evaluated as well for model performance comparison. Results indicate that the model employed in this study outperforms ordinary ordered logit model in model fit and parameter estimation. Variables regarding crash features, environment conditions, and driver and vehicle characteristics are found to have significant influence on the predictions of driver injury severities in rural non-interstate crashes. Factors such as road segments far from intersection, wet road surface condition, collision with animals, heavy vehicle drivers, male drivers and driver seatbelt used tend to induce less severe driver injury outcomes than the factors such as multiple-vehicle crashes, severe vehicle damage in a crash, motorcyclists, females, senior drivers, driver with alcohol or drug impairment, and other major collision types. Research limitations regarding crash data and model assumptions are also discussed. Overall, this research provides reasonable results and insight in developing effective road safety measures for crash injury severity reduction and prevention.
Rapid suppression of S-PTH by oral calcitriol and calcium in healthy premenopausal women.

Abstract:The influence of oral calcium +/- cholecalciferol or calcitriol on S-PTH and whole blood ionized calcium (B-Ca++) in the very short term has not been elucidated. B-Ca++ and S-PTH were measured after overnight fast every 5 or 15 min for 4-h in 7 healthy premenopausal women (30-45 years) in a crossover design where the subjects were studied on 4 different days. Study 1: (control), 125-ml tap water (also given in studies 2-4); study 2: 1000 mg calcium, as calcium carbonate; study 3: 1000 mg calcium and 400 IU (5 microg) cholecalciferol; and study 4: 0.5 microg calcitriol plus 1000 mg calcium. Calcium plus 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 induced a rapid and significant fall in S-PTH compared to the control period (p < 0.02). Calcium alone or calcium plus cholecalciferol did not change the PTH levels significantly compared to control (water). B-Ca++ increased significantly after calcium plus 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 (p<0.01) and calcium plus cholecalciferol (p<0.05) compared to the control period. The B-Ca++ elevation was significantly higher after calcium plus 1,25 vitamin D3 than after calcium plus cholecalciferol (p<0.05). In conclusion, oral calcitriol plus calcium causes a rapid elevation in B-Ca++ and suppression of the PTH secretion also in the short term (hours).

Abstract:Objectives Alcohol-impaired driving (A-ID) crashes have been acknowledged as fatality-concentrated while there is a limited understanding of how contributors relating to A-ID influence crash severity and lead to more severe injuries in rural areas. The current paper utilized North Carolina crash data to investigate the unobserved heterogeneity and temporal stability of the rural single-vehicle A-ID crash injury-severity determinants over a five-year period from 2014-2018. Methods Crash injury severities were estimated using a group of random parameters logit models in the means and variances with three categories of injury-severity determined as outcome variables including no injury, minor injury, and severe injury. Explanatory variables were selected across multiple factors that could be classified as roadway characteristics, environmental characteristics, crash characteristics, temporal characteristics, vehicle characteristics and driver characteristics. The temporal stability of the models was examined through a series of likelihood ratio tests. Marginal effects were also adopted to analyze the temporal stability of the explanatory variables. Results The result uncovers an overall temporal instability. Some contributors present relatively temporal stability such as female, turning, passenger car, motorcycle, vehicle age (5-9 years old), speed limit (<45 mph), curved segment, dry road surface, animal collision and overturned collision. Curved segment and dry road surface are found to consistently increase the possibility of severe injuries in rural alcohol-involved crashes. Conclusions This paper can provide insights into preventing single-vehicle A-ID crashes and could potentially facilitate the development of single-vehicle A-ID crash injury mitigation policies in rural areas. More studies could be conducted adopting the advanced data-driven methods for A-ID crash prediction.

Abstract:There is a great necessity to understand the endogenous and exogenous mechanism of how male and female driver characteristics determine the crash severity. Consequently, this paper estimated a group of random paramters logit models with heterogeneity in means and variances to investigate the heterogeneity and temporal stability of how male and female drivers affect crash severity. Using the crash data from California between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017, an extensive body of factors that could potentially affect crash injury severity were examined. Additionally, the temporal stability and gender transferability of the models were investigated through a series of likelihood ratio tests. Marginal effects were also adopted to analyze the temporal stability of the explanatory variables. Three crash injury severity categories were investigated including fatal injury, severe injury, and minor injury, in terms of roadway characteristics, environmental characteristics, crash characteristics, temporal characteristics and driver characteristics significantly influencing crash injury outcomes. Remarkable differences were observed between crashes involving male and female drivers, and both male and female related crashes exhibited statistically significant temporal instability over the five-year period considered. This paper could potentially be utilized to ameliorate highway safety aimed at male and female drivers respectively and facilitate the development of crash injury mitigation policies. Spatial stability may be also a valuable issue that should be further investigated in future research. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
A multinomial logit model-Bayesian network hybrid approach for driver injury severity analyses in rear-end crashes

Abstract:Rear-end crash is one of the most common types of traffic crashes in the U.S. A good understanding of its characteristics and contributing factors is of practical importance. Previously, both multinomial Logit models and Bayesian network methods have been used in crash modeling and analysis, respectively, although each of them has its own application restrictions and limitations. In this study, a hybrid approach is developed to combine multinomial logit models and Bayesian network methods for comprehensively analyzing driver injury severities in rear-end crashes based on state-wide crash data collected in New Mexico from 2010 to 2011. A multinomial logit model is developed to investigate and identify significant contributing factors for rear-end crash driver injury severities classified into three categories: no injury, injury, and fatality. Then, the identified significant factors are utilized to establish a Bayesian network to explicitly formulate statistical associations between injury severity outcomes and explanatory attributes, including driver behavior, demographic features, vehicle factors, geometric and environmental characteristics, etc. The test results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid approach performs reasonably well. The Bayesian network reference analyses indicate that the factors including truck-involvement, inferior lighting conditions, windy weather conditions, the number of vehicles involved, etc. could significantly increase driver injury severities in rear-end crashes. The developed methodology and estimation results provide insights for developing effective countermeasures to reduce rear-end crash injury severities and improve traffic system safety performance.

Abstract:As vehicle operators, some drivers may have significant impacts on crash-injury severity, and it may be of interest to understand the underlying mechanism of how driver characteristics affect the crash-injury severity. Therefore, this study explored the effect of driver characteristics on crash-injury severity, specifically focusing on drivers with and without commercial driver's licences (CDL) when driving small vehicles (passenger car, SUV, and pickup truck) with consideration of drivers' heterogeneity. Crash data from Maryland between January 2015 and December 2018 were analysed, considering factors such as roadway, driver, vehicle, environmental, crash, and temporal characteristics. Furthermore, the random parameters multinomial logit model was adopted to analyse how significant factors affect the crash-injury severity of drivers with and without CDLs. The study identified common features in injury severity among these two types of drivers, as well as notable differences based on their licence types. These findings may provide valuable insights for developing effective long-term strategies to reduce crash.

Abstract:This study intended to investigate the crash injury severity from the insights of the novice and experienced drivers. To achieve this objective, a bivariate panel data probit model was initially proposed to account for the correlation between both time-specific and individual-specific error terms. The geocrash data of Las Vegas metropolitan area from 2014 to 2017 were collected. In order to estimate two (seemingly unrelated) nonlinear processes and to control for interrelations between the unobservables, the bivariate random-effects probit model was built up, in which injury severity levels of novice and experienced drivers were addressed by bivariate (seemingly unrelated) probit simultaneously, and the interrelations between the unobservables (i.e., heterogeneity issue) were accommodated by bivariate random-effects model. Results revealed that crash types, vehicle types of minor responsibility, pedestrians, and motorcyclists were potentially significant factors of injury severity for novice drivers, while crash types, driver condition of minor responsibility, first harm, and highway factor were significant for experienced drivers. The findings provide useful insights for practitioners to improve traffic safety levels of novice and experienced drivers.
Exploring Injury Severity of Vulnerable Road User Involved Crashes Across Seasons: A Hybrid Method Integrating Random Parameter Logit Model and Bayesian Network

Abstract:Recently, vulnerable road user to motor vehicle (VRU-MV) crashes have been the focus of much attention. Data from Shenyang, China were used for crashes analysis and significant differences existed in VRU-MV crashes across seasons. Therefore, this study analysed three crash datasets (whole, "spring & summer", "fall & winter") by using a hybrid method integrating random parameter logit (RP-logit) model and Bayesian network (BN). First, RP-logit model was established to find out significant factors and heterogeneity considering those three datasets. Second, significant factors identified from RP-logit model were utilized to establish a BN to investigate statistical associations between injury severity and explanatory attributes. Results showed seven significant factors were found in "spring & summer" dataset while five significant factors in "fall & winter" dataset, four hidden factors were found by comparative analysis of those three datasets. Besides, five factors were found to be random and normally distributed. Results of BN indicated that some factors could significantly increase high possibility of fatality when combined with other factors. For example, functional zone (ZON) in "spring & summer" dataset and motor vehicle type (MVT) in "fall & winter" dataset. The proposed hybrid method demonstrated both the consistence of methods (RP-logit model & BN) and the differences across seasons for VRU-MV crashes analysis. Three personalized factors including physical isolation (PI), crash type (CT) and motor vehicle type (MVT) made great differences across seasons.

Exploring the heterogeneities in vehicle-involved traffic violations at intersections using latent class clustering and partial proportional odds models

Abstract:Vehicle-involved road crashes, mainly caused by traffic violations, result in major property damage and life losses annually. Thus, it is of vital importance to clarify the heterogeneities of various factors in traffic violation severities. This study quantifies the heterogeneities across different clusters. It selects 15 potential factors from six perspectives based on 40,161 police-reported traffic violations at intersections. An unsupervised learning algorithm combining latent class clustering analysis and partial proportional odds model, as well as marginal effects, is applied to clarify the differences. Four clusters are identified as the optimal based on the Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion (BIC), sample-sized adjusted BIC, and entropy-based approach. The results evidenced that the top five influential factors in traffic violations at intersections were legs of entrance, driver age, road type, area type, and signal control. Their maximum absolute values of their marginal effects were more than 35%. Furthermore, there were great heterogeneities across the clusters, especially between cluster 2 and cluster 3. Findings could provide some insightful information to prioritize effective countermeasures to mitigate the losses of traffic violations and improve road safety.

Abstract:Introduction: Since September 2014, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has requested autonomous vehicle (AV) manufacturers to report their accidents if they take field tests on public roadways in California. These collision reports are heterogeneous containing a variety of accident factors. Method: To describe the accident more elaborately, we add three new category variables: 'traffic control and status,' 'speed/speed change,' and 'type of accident location,' extracted from crash narratives. Combining with the existing variables as model inputs, we use Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to investigate the mixture types of traffic accidents. After using 'Mplus' (LCA tool), the data set with 308 cases has been segmented into three clusters, including 'rear-end collisions after the speed change of AV,' 'sideswipe collisions at parking places,' and 'hit-object collisions in normal traffic road.' Results: These three clusters are not highlighted in previous literature and Cluster 1 shows AV should not be designed too ethically. To follow the driving habits of traditional drivers, AVs should accelerate vehicles quickly when they start to move and delay stopping in front of stop lines, traffic lights, and yielding. The cluster-based analyses show that applying LCA as a preliminary analysis can reveal the interesting hierarchical patterns hidden in the dataset and help traffic safety researchers improve AV safety performances.

Abstract:There is a high potential of severe injury outcomes in traffic crashes on rural interstate highways due to the significant amount of high speed traffic on these corridors. Hierarchical Bayesian models are capable of incorporating between-crash variance and within-crash correlations into traffic crash data analysis and are increasingly utilized in traffic crash severity analysis. This paper applies a hierarchical Bayesian logistic model to examine the significant factors at crash and vehicle/driver levels and their heterogeneous impacts on driver injury severity in rural interstate highway crashes. Analysis results indicate that the majority of the total variance is induced by the between-crash variance, showing the appropriateness of the utilized hierarchical modeling approach. Three crash-level variables and six vehicle/driver-level variables are found significant in predicting driver injury severities: road curve, maximum vehicle damage in a crash, number of vehicles in a crash, wet road surface, vehicle type, driver age, driver gender, driver seatbelt use and driver alcohol or drug involvement. Among these variables, road curve, functional and disabled vehicle damage in crash, single-vehicle crashes, female drivers, senior drivers, motorcycles and driver alcohol or drug involvement tend to increase the odds of drivers being incapably injured or killed in rural interstate crashes, while wet road surface, male drivers and driver seatbelt use are more likely to decrease the probability of severe driver injuries. The developed methodology and estimation results provide insightful understanding of the internal mechanism of rural interstate crashes and beneficial references for developing effective countermeasures for rural interstate crash prevention.
