Abstract:Annually laminated sediments in Lake Xiaolongwan, northeast China, contain a suite of n-alkanes (C17–C33) with a strong odd over even carbon number predominance. Biomarker n-alkane proxies (average chain length, Paq ratio, grass/tree ratio, carbon preference index and compound-specific δ13C values) were used to reconstruct climate changes that occurred over the last millennium. Compound-specific δ13C values show large differences between the distinctive chain length groups of n-alkanes that originate from algae, aquatic macrophytes and terrestrial plants. Long-chain n-alkanes (C27–C33) are predominantly derived from leaf wax lipids in the forest. Variations in long-chain n-alkane δ13C values may mainly record water-use efficiency, inasmuch as the contribution from C4 plants is negligible in the Lake Xiaolongwan catchment. Short- and middle-chain n-alkanes are mainly from algae and aquatic plants. They are strongly depleted in 13C. This feature may be linked to a methane-derived, negative δ13C pool and lake overturn, which regulates dinoflagellate blooms. Parallel fluctuations are observed in δ13C27–31 values, Paq, and the grass/tree ratio throughout the record. Variations in δ13C27–31 values and Paq are in agreement with historical documents on summer and winter climate conditions. They support earlier suggestions that δ13C values in the long-chain n-alkanes and Paq may be useful indicators of effective precipitation or drought stress in this forested area. The δ13C27–31 index and Paq show distinct decadal variations. Periods with high δ13C27–31 values and a low Paq index correspond with the warm phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Values are reversed during PDO cool phases. At the decadal timescale, summer monsoon rainfall in northeast China over the last millennium may have been regulated mainly by the PDO.

Abstract:Hydrocarbons in coastal sediments record organic matter sources, and thus are widely used to elucidate both natural and anthropogenic inputs and for the estimation of pollution levels. Surface sediments were taken from Xiaoqing River and Laizhou Bay of eastern China in spring and summer of 2014, and were analyzed to determine the characteristics of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Various hydrocarbons were identified, including n-alkanes, monomethylated alkanes (MMAs), isoprenoid alkanes, linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), hopanes, steranes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). They were used to track both biogenic (terrestrial plant and microbial inputs) and anthropogenic inputs (petroleum and fossil fuel or biomass burning) in this ecosystem. The major part of hydrocarbons identified came from anthropogenic inputs including petroleum residues and synthetic detergents related hydrocarbons (16.2-90.3%), followed by higher plant (4.5-80.5%) and microbial inputs (0.8-57.5%). Interestingly, significant differences in hydrocarbon concentrations and distributions were observed between spring and summer. In particular, significant higher percentages of microbially derived hydrocarbons, but lower percentages of anthropogenic and vascular plant derived hydrocarbons were observed in summer than spring. Further principal component analyses suggested that the overall distribution of aliphatic hydrocarbons was mainly controlled by seasonality instead of spatiality. In contrast, the distribution of PAHs showed insignificant spatial and seasonal differences. Physical processes such as atmospheric transportation and further deposition, may be factors influencing the distribution of PAHs in the study area with widely biomass and fossil fuel burning. The decoupled distributions of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons warrant further study for a comprehensive understanding of long term sedimentary hydrocarbon sources and input dynamics with increasing human activities. Major finding: Seasonal difference in aliphatic hydrocarbon composition was observed in surface sediments of Laizhou Bay, which is mainly caused by stronger phytoplankton and microbial inputs in summer under the overall high pollution background. Geochemical records of human-induced environmental changes in two small remote lakes of Songnen Plain, Northeast China

Abstract:The abundance and composition of aliphatic hydrocarbon biomarkers were determined in dated sediment cores from Lakes Qijiapao (QJP) and Huoshaoheipao (HSH) in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China, to investigate historical environmental changes in these lakes and identify likely controlling factors. Based on these results, the recent environmental history of the two lakes can be divided into three periods. Before 1950, low Paq values (avg. 0.23 and 0.27, respectively) and middle-chain n-alkane abundances (normalized to total organic carbon, avg. 14.82 and 16.01 µg g-1 TOC, respectively) in both lakes suggested low aquatic productivity and the limited input of submerged macrophyte organic matter (OM). However, the significant increase in the abundance of short-chain n-alkanes in Lake HSH (from 8.34 to 16.68 µg g-1 TOC) indicated the emergence of early nutrient enrichment in the lake. From 1950 to 2000, marked increase in the abundance of middle-chain n-alkanes (avg. 21.72 and 22.62 µg g-1 TOC in Lakes QJP and HSH, respectively) and Paq values indicated that both lakes had undergone eutrophication because of the population explosion and agricultural intensification. From 2000 to 2013, the abundance of short- and middle-chain n-alkanes in Lake QJP markedly exceeded those in Lake HSH and indicated a larger eutrophication in Lake QJP, which could be caused by the development of ecotourism in Lake HSH and the concomitant increase in aquaculture in Lake QJP in recent years. The highest abundance of C30 αβ-hopane (~ 10.24 µg g-1 TOC) and the lowest CPIH values in Lake QJP revealed a possible petroleum pollution since 2008. Taken together, lake eutrophication in the Songnen Plain accelerated after 1950 and was influenced primarily by agriculture and aquaculture. This is in contrast to lakes in other regions of China (such as the Yangtze River Basin and Yunnan Province), where urbanization and industrialization have exerted a dominant influence on the lake environment.

Abstract:It has been generally accepted that long-chain n- alkanes found in lacustrine sequences are mainly derived from terrestrial plants, which is the basis for tracking paleoenvironmental changes associated with terrestrial plants. However, this application may be complicated by the possible contribution of long-chain n -alkanes from non-emergent aquatic plants. To explore this issue, a sedimentary core spanning the past 150 years from Lake Longgan in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, together with terrestrial plant and soil samples collected around the lake, was analyzed for molecular distributions and δ 13 C values of n- alkanes. Results show that n -alkanes with different chain lengths have similar sources, as evidenced by the strong positive correlations in concentrations (r 2 > 0.88, p < 0.001) and δ 13 C values (r 2 > 0.79, p < 0.001) among n -alkane homologs. The δ 13 C alk values (especially n- C 29 and n- C 31 ) indicated that n -alkanes have a mixed source, with non-emergent aquatic plants having a greater influence in shallow lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLYR). Results from the MixSIAR model further reveal that non-emergent aquatic plants contribute a large amount of mid-chain n -alkanes and almost half (34.6% ~ 57.7%) of the long-chain n- alkanes. These findings suggest that long-chain n- alkanes in lacustrine sequences should be used with caution when attempting to reflect terrestrial vegetation succession and the associated climate changes.

Distribution and Sources of N-Alkanes in Surface Sediments of Taihu Lake, China

Abstract:The last study on n-alkanes in surface sediments of Taihu Lake was in 2000, only 13 surface sediment samples were analysed, in order to have a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of n-alkanes in the surface sediments of Taihu Lake, 41 surface sediment samples were analyzed by GC-MS. C-10 to C-37 were detected, the total concentrations of n-alkanes ranged from 2109 ng g(-1) to 9096 ng g(-1) (dry weight). There was strong odd carbon predominance in long chain n-alkanes and even carbon predominance in short chain n-alkanes. When this finding was combined with the analysis results of wax n-alkanes (WaxCn), carbon preference index (CPI), unresolved complex mixture (UCM), hopanes and steranes, it was considered that the long chain n-alkanes were mainly from terrigenous higher plants, and that the short chain n-alkanes mainly originated from bacteria and algae in the lake, compared with previous studies, there were no obvious anthropogenic petrogenic inputs. Terrestrial and aquatic hydrocarbons ratio (TAR) and C-21(-)/C-25(+) indicated that terrigenous input was higher than aquatic sources and the nearshore n-alkanes were mainly from land-derived sources. Moreover, the distribution of short chain n-alkanes presented a relatively uniform pattern, while the long chain n-alkanes presented a trend that concentrations dropped from nearshore places to the middle of lake.

Abstract:n-Alkanes have been widely used to reconstruct palaeoenvironmental variations in lacustrine environments. However, for robust reconstructions, improving the understanding of the origin of n-alkanes and their distribution within the lake is essential. Therefore, we examined the distribution pattern of n-alkanes in the aquatic plants within Lake Lugu (a deep alpine lake on the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, southwest China), and terrestrial plants and topsoils in the catchment, to unravel the origin of sedimentary n-alkanes and further investigate the spatial distribution of n-alkanes from surface sediments in this lake. The aquatic plants are dominated by mid-chain C23 and C25, terrestrial plants and soils by long-chain C29, and 76% of the surface sediment samples show C29 predominance. The average chain length (ACL) and the aquatic plant proxy (Paq) values of surface sediments are between those of aquatic and terrestrial plants and soils. Thus, n-alkanes from autochthonous (aquatic plants) and allochthonous (terrestrial plants and soils) sources were apparent in the surface sediments. A substantial spatial distribution of n-alkanes exists within Lake Lugu: the n-alkane concentrations of total, aquatic, and terrigenous origins are concentrated in the northwestern portion of the lake's north basin, which may be attributed to the underwater topography and increased human-induced soil erosion in this area. Similarly, the clear spatial heterogeneity of ACL21–33 and Paq may suggest that the sedimentary n-alkanes comprise a mixture contribution of autochthonous and allochthonous production, which might be the major source of n-alkanes in the lakeshore, and a higher proportion of autochthonous n-alkanes is present in deep water. However, there is no significant correlation between the Paq of sediments and water depth in Lake Lugu; thus, the application of Paq as a lake-level indicator should be used with caution in deep-water lakes similar to Lake Lugu.
Exploring the relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and sedimentary organic carbon in three Chinese lakes

Abstract:Purpose Previous studies have shown a positive correlation between concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and total organic carbon (TOC) in lake sediments. However, with respect to the complex organic matter in recent sediments, it is still unclear which part of TOC plays a key role in controlling PAHs distributions in natural sediments. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between PAHs and TOC components of different origins in lake sediments. Materials and methods Sediment cores from three Chinese lakes with different trophic conditions—Lakes Bosten, Dianchi, and Poyang—were collected using a piston core sampler. The cores were sectioned into 1- or 2-cm intervals immediately after collection and transported on ice to the laboratory where they were stored at −20 °C. The subsamples were freeze-dried and ground with a mortar and pestle for analyses. PAHs were analyzed by GC–MS and TOC was determined with a PE elemental analyzer after the removal of carbonates. Rock-Eval 6 pyrolysis technique was used to deconvolute the TOC in the sediments into free and volatile hydrocarbons (S1), kerogen-derived hydrocarbons (S2), and residual carbon (RC); S2 was further separated into thermal less stable macromolecular organic matter (S2a) and high molecular weight kerogens (S2b). Results and discussion Positive correlations between TOC and PAHs were observed in these lakes. Results show that the more labile, minor components of TOC (S1 and S2a) played a more important role in controlling PAH distributions than the major components of TOC (S2b and RC), probably due to the different accessibilities of the organic components. The algae-derived organic carbon had a greater influence on the distribution of low molecular weight PAHs than that of high molecular weight PAHs in sediments. This suggests that PAHs scavenging in the water column by algae is mainly targeted at low molecular weight PAHs, and that preferential scavenging of low molecular weight PAHs may be due to the different atmospheric phases of low and high molecular weight PAHs. Conclusions Algal scavenging had an important influence on the PAH concentrations, especially the lower molecular weight PAH concentrations in the lake sediments. The results suggest that PAH concentrations and their molecular ratios in lake sediments may neither accurately represent the pollution history of PAHs, nor the origin PAHs source differentiation. This study has significant implications for understanding the roles of organic matter in affecting the distributions of PAHs and other similar organic pollutants in lake sediments.

Abstract:Biomarkers n -alkanes and pertinent indices in lake sediments are frequently used to infer past changes in climate and environmental conditions in and around lakes. Interpretation of n -alkane records can be confounded by a lack of understanding of the multiple factors that control n -alkanes in sediments. Here, we studied n -alkanes in sediment cores from two alpine lakes, Lakes Son-Kul and Issyk-Kul, and from terminal Lake Balkhash, in arid Central Asia to identify natural and human-mediated influences on sediment n -alkane profiles. Altitudinal differences in climate, as well as in lake trophic status, proved to be important drivers of n -alkane compositional differences in the lake sediments. In the alpine lakes, the distribution of n -alkanes was biased toward long-chain components ( n -C 29 , n -C 31 , and n -C 33 ), and showed higher carbon preference index (CPI H ) values, which come from dense terrestrial plant communities, promoted by greater precipitation. In contrast, n -alkanes in the core from the terminal lake displayed higher proportions of short-chain n -alkanes ( n -C 17 , n -C 19 , and n -C 21 ) because a greater proportion of the organic matter (OM) input to the sediments was derived from algae, a consequence of higher temperatures and trophic status. In recent decades, increasing nutrient inputs from human activities have caused greater accumulation of short-chain n -alkanes in sediments of alpine, oligotrophic Lake Issyk-Kul. In Lake Balkhash, n -C 20 and n -C 22 alkanes are exceptionally abundant, suggesting large contributions from microbial reworking of terrestrial OM. In all three study lakes, ∑( n -C 29 - n -C 33 ) was elevated in sediments that correspond to periods of intense agricultural exploitation. Moreover, expansion of agriculture from low to high altitudes resulted in both synchronous and asynchronous peaks in ∑ ( n -C 29 - n -C 33 ) in the studied cores, suggesting the n -alkanes faithfully record the history of agricultural expansion. These findings provide insights into applications of n -alkane proxies and the response of the lake system to climate and anthropogenic impacts.

Abstract:Purpose Variations in hydrocarbon composition and concentration are essential for the assessment of its source and environmental health in estuarine environments. This study aims to reveal the spatial and temporal distribution of multiple hydrocarbons in surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary, and to further determine various sources of these hydrocarbons. Materials and methods Surface sediments were taken monthly from four sites along a spatial transect from the Pearl River Estuary in a whole year by using a gravitational bottom sampler. A series of bulk parameters including the grain size, total organic carbon content, and total nitrogen content were measured. Hydrocarbons in sediments were extracted and analyzed by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results and discussion The abundances of higher plants and phytoplankton-derived n -alkanes, petrogenically derived pristane, phytane, hopanes, and steranes with geological configuration, and anthropogenically derived hydrocarbons, including linear alkylbenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons all showed decreasing trends towards the coastal ocean. In contrast, the diatom-derived C 25 highly branched isoprenoids increased towards saline sites. Monthly fluctuations of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons at the estuarine mouth were smaller than the upstream freshwater sites, where high monthly variation (up to fivefold) was observed for most of the hydrocarbons detected. Conclusions This study showed substantial monthly and spatial variations of hydrocarbons in the surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary. Distribution and composition of sedimentary hydrocarbons indicate mainly anthropogenic inputs (e.g., petroleum residues and synthetic detergents) and terrestrially higher plants, followed by aquatic inputs.
New insights into spatiotemporal source apportionment of n-alkanes under mixed scenario: A pilot study on Lake Chaohu, China

Abstract:N–alkanes are ideal molecular markers for the source apportionment of organic matter. However, the estimation of both biogenic and anthropogenic sources under mixed scenario using n–alkanes and their related proxies still remains an issue. In this study, we investigated spatiotemporal variations of n–alkanes in suspended particulate matter of Lake Chaohu for their source apportionment. Overall, Σ29 n–alkanes ranged from 324.1 to 113685 ng·L−1. C17H36 was the most abundant homologue and was followed by C18, C27 and C29 homologues. Carbon preference indexes (CPIs) in most samples (at least 85%) were < 3, indicating mixed sources of n–alkanes in Lake Chaohu. Therefore, biogenic and anthropogenic n–alkanes were separated by subtraction to avoid potential bias. Our results showed Σ biogenic and Σ anthropogenic n–alkanes ranged from 14.8 to 3531.6 ng·L−1 and 257.6 to 4938.5 ng·L−1, respectively. For biogenic n–alkanes, their carbon–chain distributions posed a preponderant peak at C17, indicating algae were the main contributors to biogenic n–alkanes in Lake Chaohu. Biogenic average chain length (ACLbio) was developed to quantify the contributions of different biogenic sources. We recommended ACLbio < 21 for algae dominance and ACLbio > 26 for terrestrial plant dominance. For anthropogenic n–alkanes, their carbon–chain distribution presented obviously spatiotemporal variations. The sources of anthropogenic n–alkanes in summer and winter were typical dominances of light petroleum and incomplete fossil fuel burning/heavy oil emission, respectively. New developed proxies, anthropogenic average chain length (ACLanthro) and the ratio of unit short– to long–carbon anthropogenic n–alkanes (L/H), are effective for quantifying the relative contributions of different anthropogenic sources. We recommend log10L/H > 0.5 and ACLanthro < 20.5 for light petroleum input dominance, log10L/H < −0.5 and ACLanthro > 26.5 for incomplete fossil fuel burning at high temperature/heavy oil emission dominance.

Investigation of Modern n-Alkanes in Daihai Lake Basin, Northern China: Implications for the Interpretation of Paleoclimate Research

Abstract:n -Alkanes are one of the most used proxies in lake sediments to reconstruct past climate change. However, the distribution and concentration of n -alkanes are controlled by multiple factors, and their interpretation across northern China has revealed obvious discrepancies. It is therefore important to investigate the controlling factors of n -alkane proxies before using them for paleoclimate reconstruction. In this study, we collected fresh plant leaves, basin surface soils, lake surface sediments, and a short sediment core (DH20B) in the Daihai Lake basin to analyze the paleoclimate implications of n -alkanes. Our results show that long-chain (C 27 –C 35 ) n -alkanes in Daihai Lake are dominated by allochthonous sources. The average chain length of long-chain n -alkanes (ACL 27–35 ) and total long-chain n -alkane concentration (∑alk long-chain ) of DH20B are significantly correlated with regional summer temperature ( r = 0.54, p < 0.01) and summer precipitation ( r = 0.41, p < 0.05) over the past 60 years. These results indicate that ACL 27–35 and ∑alk long-chain from Daihai Lake sediments have the potential to reconstruct past summer temperature and summer precipitation, respectively, because higher summer temperature promotes the synthesis of longer-chain n -alkanes to reduce water loss (leading to higher ACL 27–35 ) and increased summer precipitation promotes plant growth (leading to higher ∑alk long-chain ). Moreover, we found that human activity significantly affected ∑alk long-chain through cultivation and grazing after 2005. Our findings may have broad significance for paleoclimate reconstruction of other hydrologically closed lakes, highlighting the importance of proxy validation studies.

Abstract:Sedimentary organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in the transportation and transformation of various pollutants and the carbon cycle in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, especially for seagoing rivers. However, few studies have focused on the sources and factors of SOM in rivers under the significant pressure of high urbanization and industrialization. In this study, we adopted the molecular markers of n-alkanes and their proxies in the mainstream Haihe River to reveal the spatiotemporal distributions and biogenic and anthropogenic sources of SOM. The concentrations of Σ29 n-alkanes, Σbiogenic n-alkanes, and Σanthropogenic n-alkanes were 4985.6 (127.5–26,296.6), 1872.1 (38.1–9216.9), and 3113.5 (89.4–18,259.7) ng·g−1 dw (dry weight), respectively. Hybrid sources of n-alkanes were found in this study. The composition distribution and proxies of n-alkanes showed that woody and herbaceous plants are the main sources of biogenic SOM, while incomplete fossil fuel burning and heavy oil emissions served as the main contributors to anthropogenic SOM in the mainstream Haihe River, especially through industrial activities. The average chain length of biogenic n-alkanes (ACLbio) was verified to quantify the relative contributions of biogenic sources of SOM and proxies; the average chain length of anthropogenic n-alkanes (ACLanthro), and the ratio of unit short‑carbon to unit long‑carbon anthropogenic n-alkanes (L/H) were verified to quantify the relative contributions of anthropogenic sources of SOM in the river system. Impacts from sedimentary geochemistry (such as total organic carbon (TOC) and grain size of sediments) on n-alkanes were explored, and the correlations of Σ29 n-alkanes with TOC and grain size of the river sediment indicated that terrestrial organic matter was the main source of SOM, while emissions from incomplete combustion and intensive manufacturer activities should also not be neglected.

Abstract:Identification and quantification of allochthonous and autochthonous organic carbon (OC) in large and shallow lakes are crucial for knowledge of OC burial and recycling behaviors, as well as sustainable management practices. However, quantitative methods to estimate the contributions from various OC sources are still limited. In this study, we analyzed distribution patterns and δ13C signatures of mid- and long-chain n-alkanes from aquatic plants, riverine sediment, and surface sediments from a typically large and shallow Lake Wuliangsu in the Hetao Irrigation District, China. The results indicate that n-alkanes among submerged macrophytes, emergent plants, and riverine sediment show unique distribution patterns and δ13C signatures, supporting the practicability of identification and quantification of OC sources by end-member mixing models of n-alkanes’ distribution patterns and 13C values. Our results also suggest that introducing δ13C values into the end-member mixing models could effectively reduce the uncertainty, as n-alkane distribution patterns might be modified by different species, habitat environments, and potential OC degradation. In the case of Lake Wuliangsu, the model results demonstrate that the riverine sourced OC from the main channel has decreased during southward transport, indicating that Lake Wuliangsu serves as an important trap and sink for OC transported from the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The model results also show a predominant contribution of the autochthonous OC to sediments in Lake Wuliangsu, with open-water areas dominated by submerged macrophyte-sourced OC and the other areas by emergent plant-sourced OC. Higher productivities of submerged macrophytes are mainly modulated by increases in water depth, water transparency, and nutrient concentrations, while higher productivities of emergent plants are mainly associated with increasing nutrient concentrations. To improve the ecological conditions and OC burial of Lake Wuliangsu, it is necessary to manage the quality of the inflowing water from the agricultural farmland, as well as the preservation of the water body from current paludification.

Abstract:The extensive anthropogenic activities and their potential impacts on lakes during the Anthropocene could be recorded in the sediments. In this study, the composition of biomarkers (i.e., n-alkanes and n-fatty acids), total organic carbon (TOC), and particle size in 210Pb-dated sediment cores from West Dongting Lake were investigated to trace the historical trend of anthropogenic inputs and their environmental significance. The TOC content was in the range of 3.15–27.32 mg g−1. The n-alkanes and n-fatty acids were distributed from C11–C33 and C12:0–C34:0, respectively. The short- and long-chain biomarkers accounted for a significant proportion of the total. Aquatic plants and algae living in West Dongting Lake were the main source (short-chain) followed by leaf waxes derived from terrestrial C3 plants (long-chain), as demonstrated by their concentrations. The variations of the key indicators i.e., the carbon preference index (CPI), aquatic plant n-alkane proxy (Paq), vascular plant n-alkane proxy (Pwax), and the ratio of unit short- to long-chain n-alkanes (L/H) also indicated that the aliphatic hydrocarbon fractions were mainly composed of short- and long-chain biomarkers. The sedimentary biomarkers had a significant temporal heterogeneity, which was controlled by different factors and sedimentary processes. Fine particles (<16 µm) were the dominant particle size (66.91%–78.52%) in the sediment. Both values of the dry/wet climate proxy (Kd) and average particle size were consistent over time. The dominance of terrestrial C3 plant-derived long-chain molecules gradually changed, with algae-derived short-chain molecules then becoming dominant. The hot and drought climate conditions and enhanced agricultural inputs from 1855 to 2019 in the watershed resulted in a decrease of terrestrial C3 plants and rapid growth of algae in the lake water.

Abstract:Long chain alkenones occur widely in lacustrine settings and their compositions are potential proxies for reconstructing terrestrial paleoclimatological and paleoenvironmental changes. However, factors influencing their occurrence, abundance, compositional pattern and unsaturation indices are not well understood. Here we investigated the alkenones in surface sediments from 19 lakes in northwestern China as well as potential environmental factors. Of the lakes, 12 contain long chain alkenones, 3 have the isomeric C-37:3 alkenone and 3 have very low abundance of alkenones. Our results show that salinity has a substantial influence on the occurrence, concentration and compositional pattern. Most of the compositions are dominated by tri-unsaturated compounds, with C-38 methyl ketones absent. The predominance of C-37:4 and the occurrence of a C-37:3 isomer are suggested to be responses to low salinity as both are only found in the three alkenone-containing freshwater lakes. The proportion of C-37:4 varies by up to 50% and shows a negative relationship with salinity within the surveyed region. An arched relationship of alkenone content and salinity is apparent, with no or very low contents of alkenones in freshwater (salinity < 3 g/L) and hypersaline (> 100 g/L) environments. The U-37(K') index is suggested to be a better terrestrial temperature proxy than U-37(K) as U-37(K') values from lakes containing elevated alkenone content are all within the ranges of published U-37(K')-temperature calibrations, and U-37(K) values show a weak positive relationship with salinity. Abstract:Understanding the historical variations in organic matter (OM) input to lake sediments and the possible mechanisms regulating this phenomenon is important for studying carbon cycling and burial in lake systems; however, this topic remains poorly addressed for macrophyte-dominated lakes. To bridge these gaps, we analyzed bulk OM and molecular geochemical proxies in a dated sediment core from Lake Liangzi, a typical submerged macrophyte-dominated lake in East China, to infer changes in OM input to sediments over the past 169 years due to the intensification of human activities in the catchment. A relatively primitive OM input pattern was observed in ca. 1841-1965, during which the lowest hydrogen index (HI), short-chain n-alkane abundance, and n-C17/n-C16 alkane indicated minimal input from phytoplankton, whereas the high Paq (proxy of aquatic macrophyte input) and long-chain n-alkane abundance suggested dominant and subordinate inputs from submerged and emergent macrophytes, respectively. OM input transitioned during ca. 1965-1993, with the highest Paq and lowest long-chain n-alkane abundance, indicating an increase of submerged macrophyte input and concurrent decline of emergent macrophyte input, probably caused by hydrological regulation practices and land reclamation in the 1960s, respectively. A further shift in OM input was observed since ca. 1993, characterized by the beginning of an increase in phytoplankton input, as indicated by the greater HI, short-chain n-alkane abundance, and n-C17/n-C16 alkane in sediments. Moreover, a lower Paq and higher abundance of long-chain n-alkanes indicated a decline in input from submerged macrophytes and an elevated input from terrestrial plants. The increase in αβ-hopane abundance and homohopane index value indicated that petroleum-sourced OM was first introduced into the sediments. The causes of these OM input changes included nutrient influx associated with domestic and industrial discharge, aquaculture within the lake, and widespread deforestation and land clearance in the catchment.
Dual biomarker traceability and ecological risk assessment of centennial organic contamination in South Dongting Lake

Abstract:Enhanced anthropogenic activity strength has altered the watershed particulate transport and material cycle resulting in organic pollutant deposition changes in Dongting Lake associated with unclear ecological risk. In the present study, dual biomarkers i.e. n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) were applied in the 210Pb-dated sediment cores for traceability of centennial organic pollutants in the lake mouth area. The partial least squares path model and risk quotients method were used to explore the controlling pathways and ecological risk. The results show a range of sedimentary organic carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) was at 1.76-185.66, 0.97-89.80, and 0.01-0.97 g m-2 yr-1 with total reserves of 51.68, 18.44, and 0.27 t ha-1, respectively, over the past 179 years. The presence of PAHs rapidly increased by 2.47 fold from 535.60 ng g-1, while PAHs and carcinogenic PAHs (ΣCPAHs) burial fluxes increased by about 6 and 5 folds, respectively. Accompanied by anthropogenic activities and climate change, the exotic sources gradually becoming predominant. The n-alkane diagnostic ratios indicated a shift of organic matter (OM) from autotrophic bacteria, algae, and phytoplankton-derived sources to macrophyte and terrestrial plants. The exotic origins rose to approximately 73.61 %, while endogenous sources decreased to 26.39 %. The direct effects of anthropogenic activities and their indirect negative impacts on climate and sedimentary structure are the key ways for sediment material loading. The nutrient accumulation in sediments coincides with the lake's eutrophication history over the past decades. The ΣCPAHs accounted for about 89.37 ± 17.14 % of the total TEQ, reflecting a strong ecological risk. The contribution of anthropogenic activities such as fuel usage, fertilizer application, hard pavement coverage, and OM loss from the ecosystem to the sources of organic pollutants and their component types may be a focus of attention in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River plain lake.
Vertical distribution, environmental occurrence, and risk assessment of organic pollutants in lacustrine sediments in southeast China

Abstract:To clarify the impact of human activities on the natural environment, as well as the current ecological risks to the environment surrounding Zhushan Bay in Taihu Lake, the characteristics of deposited organic materials, including elements and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑16PAHs), in a sediment core from Taihu Lake were determined. The nitrogen (N), carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and sulfur (S) contents ranged from 0.08 to 0.3%, 0.83 to 3.6%, 0.63 to 1.12%, and 0.02 to 0.24%, respectively. The most abundant element in the core was C followed by H, S, and N, while elemental C and the C/H ratio displayed a decreasing trend with depth. The ∑16PAH concentration was in the range of 1807.48-4674.83 ng g-1, showing a downward trend with depth, with some fluctuations. Three-ring PAHs dominated in surface sediment, while 5-ring PAHs dominated at a depth of 55-93 cm. Six-ring PAHs appeared in the 1830s and gradually increased over time before slowly decreasing from 2005 onward due to the establishment of environmental protection measures. The ratio of PAH monomers indicated that PAHs in samples from a depth of 0 to 55 cm were mainly derived from the combustion of liquid fossil fuels, while the PAHs in the deeper samples mainly originated from petroleum. The results of a principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the PAHs in the sediment core of Taihu Lake were mainly derived from the combustion of fossil fuels, such as diesel, petroleum, gasoline, and coal. The contributions of biomass combustion, liquid fossil fuel combustion, coal combustion, and unknown source were 8.99%, 52.68%, 1.65%, and 36.68%, respectively. The results of a toxicity analysis indicated that most of the PAH monomers had little impact on the ecology, and the annual increase of a small number of monomers might have toxic effects on the biological community, resulting in a serious ecological risks, that requires the imposition of control measures.
