Abstract:Background Electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation has been shown to have a great therapeutic potential for treating gastrointestinal motility disorders. However, no evidence has clarified the mechanisms contributing to the effects of EA stimulation at the Zusanli acupoint (ST.36). This study was designed to investigate the regulative effect of EA stimulation at the ST.36 on gastric motility and to explore its possible mechanisms. Methods Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: the ST.36 group, the non-acupoint group, and the control group. EA stimulation was set at 2 Hz, continuous mode, and 1 V for 30 min. The frequency and average peak amplitude of gastric motility were measured by electrogastrography. The protein kinase C (PKC) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways were assessed using real-time polymerase chain reactions. Caldesmon (CaD) and calponin (CaP) protein expression in the gastric antrum were detected on Western blots. A Computed Video Processing System was used to evaluate morphological changes in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the gastric antrum. Results EA stimulation at ST.36 had a dual effect on the frequency and average peak amplitude. Additionally, EA stimulation at ST.36 regulated the expression of some genes in the PKC and MAPK signaling pathways, and it regulated the expression of the CaD and CaP proteins. EA serum induced SMC contractility. Promotion of gastric motility may correlate with up-regulation of MAPK6 (ERK3), MAPK13, and Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) gene expression, and the down-regulation of the collagen, type I, alpha 1 (COL1A1) gene and CaD and CaP protein expression. Inhibition of gastric motility may correlate with down-regulation of the Interleukin-1 receptor type 2 (IL1R2) and Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) genes, and up-regulation of CaD and CaP protein expression. Conclusions EA stimulation at ST.36 regulated gastric motility, and the effects were both promoting and inhibiting in rats. The possible mechanisms may correlate with the PKC and MAPK signal transduction pathways.
Highly Selective and Sensitive Fluorogenic Detection of Gsh Using Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Capped with Disulfide-containing Oligo(ethylene Glycol) Chains

Abstract:and Val) were provided by Sigma-Aldrich. Human serum from male AB plasma, USA origin were provided by Sigma-Aldrich. Analytical-grade solvents were from Scharlab (Barcelona, Spain). All reagents were used as received. Methods: X-ray measurements were performed on a Brücher AXS D8 Advance diffractometer using Cu-Kα radiation. Thermo gravimetric analysis were carried out on a TGA/SDTA 851e Mettler Toledo equipment, using an oxidant atmosphere (Air, 80 mL/min) with a heating program consisting on a heating ramp of 10 °C per minute from 393 K to 1273 K and an isothermal heating step at this temperature for 30 minutes. TEM images were taken with a JEOL TEM-1010 Electron microscope working at 100 kV. N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms were recorded on a Micromeritics ASAP2010 automated sorption analyser. The samples were degassed at 120ºC in vacuum overnight. The specific surfaces areas were calculated from the adsorption data in the low pressures range using the BET model. Pore size was determined following the BJH method. Fluorescence spectroscopy was carried out on a Jasco FP-8300 Spectrometer and UV-visible spectroscopy was carried out with a Jasco V-630 Spectrometer. Synthesis of the silica mesoporous nanoparticles support (SMPS) n-cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTABr, 1.00 g, 2.74 mmol) was first dissolved in 480 mL of distilled water. Then a 3.5 mL of NaOH 2.00 M in distilled water was added to the CTABr solution, followed by adjusting the solution temperature to 80ºC. TEOS (5 mL, 2.57x10-2 mol) was then added drop wise to the surfactant solution. The mixture was stirred for 2 h and white precipitate was obtained. Finally the precipitate was centrifuged, washed with distilled water and dried at 60ºC (MCM-41 as-synthesized). To prepare the final porous material (MCM-41), the as-synthesized solid was calcined at 550 ºC using oxidant atmosphere for 5 h in order to remove the template phase. Synthesis of S1 500 mg of calcined MCM-41 and safranin O dye (140.34 mg, 0.40 mmol) were suspended in acetonitrile (17 mL) in a round-bottomed flask. The mixture was stirred for 24 h at room temperature, filtered off and dried under vacuum. Afterward, this loaded solid (250 mg) was re-suspended in acetonitrile (8.5 mL) in the presence of an excess of safranin O and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (464.38 µL, 2.5 mmol) was added. Abstract:Objectives: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Neiguan" (PC 6) and "Zusanli"(ST 36) on the gastric emptying rate, the level of serotonin (5-HT) and the protein expression of motilin (MTL), ghrelin, substance P (SP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the antral tissue of the rats with functional dyspepsia (FD) and explore the effect mechanism of EA in treatment of FD. Methods: A total of 21 SPF male SD rat pups were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group and an EA group, with 7 rats in each group. In the model group and the EA group, FD model was prepared by the gavage with 0.1% sucrose iodoacetamide solution combined with the modified small platform method. After the successful modeling, EA was applied to "Neiguan" (PC 6) and "Zusanli"(ST 36) in the rats of the EA group, with disperse-dense wave, 20 Hz/100 Hz in frequency, stimulated for 30 min, once daily, for 7 days consecutively. Before and after intervention, the general condition of the rats was observed in each group. After the completion of intervention, the gastric emptying rate was measured, the morphological changes of gastric antral tissue were observed using HE staining, the level of 5-HT was detected with ELISA method, and the protein expression of MTL, ghrelin, SP, and VIP was determined with Western blot method in the antral tissue of rats. Results: In the normal group, the rats were in a good mental state, with lustrous fur, flexible movement and the increase of food intake and body mass. In the model group, the rats were poor in mental state, lack of lustre in fur, preference for the body curled up, reduced activity and response; and a part of rats had loose stool, obviously enlarged gastric body and gastric food retention. In the EA group, the general condition of rats, e.g. the mental state, food intake and activity, were improved, the gastric body got smaller obviously and the gastric food retention was reduced when compared with the model group. The antral structure was intact, the glands were rich and no injury of the gastric mucosa was found, e.g. inflammatory reaction and edema in the rats of each group. Compared with the normal group, the gastric emptying rate was decreased (P<0.01), 5-HT level was increased (P<0.01), the protein expression of MTL and ghrelin was reduced (P<0.01) and that of VIP was elevated (P<0.01) in the rats of the model group. The gastric emptying rate was increased (P<0.01), 5-HT level was decreased (P<0.01), and the protein expression of MTL and ghrelin was elevated (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the rats of the EA group when compared with those in the model group. Conclusions: Electroacupuncture at "Neiguan" (PC 6) and "Zusanli"(ST 36) may effectively relieve gastric dysfunction, strengthen gastric motility and promote gastric emptying so as to alleviate the symptoms of dyspepsia in FD rats, and its mechanism may be related to the regulation of gastrointestinal hormones in the antral tissue.

Abstract:Objectives: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Zhongwan" (CV 12) and "Zusanli" (ST 36) on gastric motility and explore the response time of the acupoints at different regions for regulating gastric motility and its neuromechanism. Methods: Thirty-three SD rats were randomly divided into a normal group, a vagectomy group and a splanchnicotomy group, 11 rats in each one. Vagectomy and splanchnicotomy were operated in the rats of the vagectomy group and the splanchnicotomy group, respectively. In each group, EA was delivered at "Zhongwan" (CV 2) and "Zusanli"(ST 36) on the left successively (with disperse-dense wave, 2 Hz/15 Hz in frequency and 2 mA in intensity); and it was performed at one acupoint for 1 min. Using multiple physiological signal collecting system, the intragastric pressure was measured 1 min before EA and in 0 s to 60 s, 0 s to 30 s and 30 s to 60 s of EA in the rats of each group, separately. The change rate of intragastric pressure was calculated to compare the effect size among groups. Results: 1) Compared with that before intervention, in the normal group, the intragastric pressure was dropped in 0 s to 60 s, 0 s to 30 s and 30 s to 60 s of EA at "Zhongwan" (CV 12) (P<0.01); and it was elevated in 0 s to 60 s and 30 s to 60 s of EA at "Zusanli" (ST 36) (P<0.01). 2) In 0 s to 60 s, 0 s to 30 s and 30 s to 60 s of EA at "Zhongwan" (CV 12), the intragastric pressure decreased when compared with that before intervention in both the vagectomy group and the splanchnicotomy group (P<0.01, P<0.05); and it increased in 0 s to 60 s, 0 s to 30 s and 30 s to 60 s of EA at "Zusanli" (ST 36) in the splanchnicotomy group (P<0.05). 3) Compared with the normal group, the inhibition effect size was reduced in 30 s to 60 s of EA at "Zhongwan" (CV 12) in the vagectomy group (P<0.01), and in 0 s to 30 s and 30 s to 60 s of EA at "Zhongwan" (CV 12) in the splanchnicotomy group (P<0.01). During EA at "Zhongwan" (CV 12) for 0 s to 30 s and 30 s to 60 s, the inhibition effect size was declined more obviously in the splanchnicotomy group when compared with that in the vagectomy group (P<0.01). The excitation effect size was dropped in the vagectomy group when EA at "Zusanli" (ST 36) for 30 s to 60 s compared with the normal group (P<0.01), while it increased during 0 s to 30 s in the splanchnicotomy group (P<0.05). Compared with that of the vagectomy group, the excitation effect size increased more remarkably in the splanchnicotomy group when EA at "Zusanli" (ST 36) for 0 s to 30 s and 30 s to 60 s (P<0.01). Conclusions: Electroacupuncture at the acupoints of different regions differ in the response time and neuromechanism for regulating gastric motility of normal rats. The response time at "Zhongwan" (CV 12) is short and the effect of this acupoint works fast within 30 s; while that at "Zusanli" (ST 36) is prolonged and the effect starts 30 s later. In 0 s to 30 s of EA, the effect of "Zhongwan" (CV 12) and "Zusanli" (ST 36) is predominated by the splanchnic nerve; and in 30 s to 60 s, the effect of "Zhongwan" (CV 12) may be co-innervated by the splanchnic nerve and the vagus nerve, and that of "Zusanli" (ST 36) only by the vagus nerve.
Electro-acupuncture of Foot YangMing regulates gastric activity possibly through mediation of the dorsal vagal complex

Abstract:Acupuncture at some specific acupoints of Foot Yangming can regulate gastric activity. However, its precise mechanism remains unknown. In our study, the effects and mechanism of electro-acupuncture (EA) at Tsusanli (ST 36), Shangchuhsu (ST 37) on the regulation of gastric activity were observed. EA at Tsusanli showed that gastric electric change had a significantly higher frequency and wave amplitude as compared to that of the Shangchuhsu group and other groups. EA at Shangchuhsu demonstrated the change of gastric electric was greater than that of the non-acupoint group and the control group. After bilateral vagotomy, the change of electro gastric graph (EGG) of EA at Tsusanlis was not significant compared to the control group. In the mean time, we have observed the electric discharge of the neurons in NTS and DMV. The frequency of electro-physiological activity in nucleus of solitary tract (NTS) and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMV) in Tsusanli group and Shangchuhsu group were markedly increased compared with that in other groups. The results have indicated that EA at Tsusanli and Shangchuhsu not only regulate gastric activity, but also activate neurons in NTS and DMV significantly. Our study suggests that the effect of EA at Tsusanli and Shangchuhsu on the gastric activity may partially depend upon integrated nerve pathway and related central neurons in dorsal vagal complex.
[Influence of electroacupuncture of "Zhongwan" (CV12) and "Zusanli" (ST36) in different combinations of stimulating strength and sequence on intragastric pressure in normal rats]

Abstract:Objective: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) of "Zhongwan" (CV12) and "Zusanli" (ST36) in different combinations of stimulating parameters on intragastric pressure (IGP) in normal rats so as to explore their best combinations for promoting gastrointestinal mobility. Methods: A total of 90 male SD rats were randomly divided into 6 EA groups：CV12-1 mA＋ST36-1 mA, CV12-1 mA＋ST36-2 mA, CV12-1 mA＋ST36-4 mA, ST36-1 mA＋CV12-1 mA, ST36-2 mA＋CV12-1 mA, and ST36-4 mA＋CV12-1 mA which the first acupoint was stimulated first, followed by the second in each group (n＝15 rats/group). Before (1 min), and 0-30 s, 30-60 s, 60 -90 s, and 90-120 s during EA stimulation of the left ST36 or CV12 first or later, the IGP was measured via an inserted intragastric balloon, a connected pressure transducer and an amplifier. Changes of the IGP were analyzed using 2×3×4 factorial design. Results: 1) During 0-30 s, EA-CV12 showed an obvious inhibitory effect on IGP(P<0.05) while EA-ST36 showed a mild exciting effect (P>0.05). 2) Compared with the IGP level of 0-30 s, the IGP levels of 30-120 s were significantly decreased in all the groups (P<0.01). 3) In the CV12-1 mA/ST 36-1 mA groups, only the IGP level of 0-30 s was affected by the EA-stimulating order (P<0.05). In the CV12-1 mA/ST36-2 mA groups, both the IGP levels during 0-30 s and 90-120 s were obviously affected by EA-stimulating sequence. In the CV12-1 mA/ST36-4 mA groups, the IGP level during 0-120 s was affected by EA-stimulating order. 4) Only in the condition of EA-CV12 stimulating first and EA-ST36 second and at 4 mA, the reduction effect of IGP of EA-CV12 was antagonized. There are marked interaction effects between the EA strength and acupoint EA stimulating sequence, and between the time course and acupoint EA stimulating sequence (P<0.01), but no significant interaction effects were found between the time course and stimulating strength, and among the EA stimulating strength, time course and acupoint EA stimulating sequence (P>0.05). Conclusion: Simultaneous EA stimulation of ST36 and CV12 has an antagonistic effect on IGP in normal rats, which is affected by the stimulating sequence, stimulating strength and time course.
Electroacupuncture at Acupoint ST36 (Zusanli) Improves Intestinal Motility Dysfunction Via Increasing the Proportion of Cholinergic Neurons in Rat Ileal Myenteric Ganglia after Severe Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract:Using a severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) rat model, the mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) were studied on the intestinal function of pancreatitis. The SAP models were established by injecting 30% L-ornithine at hourly intervals, and were divided into two groups (14 in each): SAP model group, which was not treated, and EA group, which received EA at ST36 at a frequency of 1-2 Hz and amplitude of 1 mA for 30 min twice a day. Fourteen rats were also included as the control group. After EA, the intestinal propulsion was measured. In the distal ileum myenteric plexus, the density of HuC/D and the proportion of cholinergic neurons were measured using immunohistochemistry. Compared to the SAP model group, the EA group demonstrated significant improvements in intestinal propulsion rates. Furthermore, after EA, the density of myenteric neurons in the ileum returned to normal levels and the proportion of cholinergic neurons was increased compared to the SAP model group. And finally, EA alleviated the damage to the pancreas. Thus, our results suggest that EA stimulation at ST36 can partly restore the enteric neuron function and improve intestinal motility dysfunction, therefore could ameliorate SAP. The enteric nervous system can participate in changes in intestinal motility by affecting cholinergic neurons.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the effects and mechanisms of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and nitric oxide (NO) in the modulation of electroacupucture (EA) on gastric motility in restrained-cold stressed rats.METHODS:An animal model of gastric motility disorder was established by restrained-cold stress. Gastric myoelectric activities were recorded by electrogastroenterography (EGG). VIP and NO concentrations in plasma and gastric mucosal and bulb tissues were detected by radioimmunoassay (RIA). VIP expression in the gastric walls was assayed using avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) and image analysis.RESULTS:In cold restrained stressed rats, EGG was disordered and irregular. The frequency and amplitude of gastric motility were higher than that in control group (P < 0.01). VIP and NO contents of plasma, gastric mucosal and bulb tissues were obviously decreased (P < 0.01). Following EA at "Zusanli" (ST36), the frequency and amplitude of gastric motility were obviously lowered (P < 0.01), while the levels of VIP and NO in plasma, gastric mucosal and bulb tissues increased strikingly (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) and expression of VIP in antral smooth muscle was elevated significantly (P < 0.01) in comparison with those of model group.CONCLUSION:VIP and NO participate in the modulatory effect of EA on gastric motility. EA at "Zusanli" acupoint (ST36) can improve gastric motility of the stressed rats by increasing the levels of VIP and NO.
Electroacupuncture via chronically implanted electrodes improves gastrointestinal motility by balancing sympathovagal activities in a rat model of constipation

Abstract:Electroacupuncture (EA) has been reported for treating constipation in clinical studies. However, little is known of the possible mechanisms involved in the prokinetic effect of EA. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and underlying autonomic mechanisms of EA via chronically implanted electrodes for constipation in rat induced by Loperamide (Lop). Lop was given to regular rats to induce constipation. EA was performed via a pair of electrodes chronically implanted at bilateral acupoint ST-36. Feces characteristics, gastric emptying, small intestinal transit, distal colon transit time (dCTT), and whole gut transit time (WGTT) were measured in various sessions with EA or sham EA in rats with constipation induced by Lop. Heart rate variability (HRV) derived from the electrocardiogram was analyzed to evaluate autonomic functions. The number of fecal pellets was reduced by 27% with Lop (P < 0.01) and normalized by 7-day EA. Similar results were also observed in pellet weight. In normal rats compared with sham EA, EA shortened dCTT by 74% (P < 0.05 vs. sham EA), increased small intestinal transit by 28% (P < 0.01) and gastric emptying by 27% (P < 0.05), and accelerated whole gut transit by 14% (P < 0.05). In Lop-treated rats, the dCTT and WGTT were prolonged by Lop and normalized by EA. Lop significantly decreased vagal activity and increased sympathetic nerve activity; however, EA reversed these effects. EA at ST-36 via chronically implanted electrodes improves Lop-induced constipation by enhancing GI motility via the autonomic mechanisms. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The findings of the present study suggest that the proposed electroacupuncture (EA) may have great therapeutic potential for treating patients with opioid-induced constipation. It was demonstrated that EA at ST-36 improved transit of every organ along the gut mediated via the autonomic mechanisms in normal rats and rats with Lop-induced constipation. It is advised to administrate EA daily instead of two or three times weekly as reported in most of the clinical studies.
Effect of electro-acupuncture at Zusanli acupiont on LESP, plasma gastrin and motilin in rats

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the influence of electro-acupuncturing (EA) at Zusanli acupoint on the pressure of lower esoph- ageal sphincter (LESP), and the plasma levels of gastrin (GAS) and motilin (MTL) in the rats. METHODS: Forty rats were divided into five groups: control group, non-channel non-collateral acupoint group, Zusanli acupoint group, atropine group, and atropine+Zusanli group. LESP was recorded by using three-channel perfusion manometric measurement system. Radioimmunoassay was applied to detect the plasma contents of GAS and MTL in the rats. RESULTS: LESP increased significantly under or after EA at Zusanli acupoint in both Zusanli group and non-channel non-collateral acupoint group (Increased rate: 62.7±27.0%, 131.0±36.4% (0-20 min), 122.6±25.9% (21-40 min), P<0.01). Furthermore, the variation degrees of LESP in Zusanli acupoint group were significantly higher than that of the nificantly after intraperitoneal injection of atropine, and restored to the basic level under EA or after EA, and the variation degrees were significantly lower than those of Zusanli group (P<0.01). GAS and MTL levels in plasma of Zusanli group were significantly higher than those of con- trol group (P<0.01). No significant difference was found between non-channel non-collateral acupoint group and control group (P1 = 0.492, P2 = 0.104). GAS and MTL of atropine+Zusanli group increased significantly compared with atropine or control group (P1<0.01, P2<0.05). GAS and MTL levels in plasma were positively correlated with LESP (P<0.01, r1 = 0.664, r2 = 0.703). CONCLUSION: There might be acupoint and meridian specificity in the regulatory effect of EA on LESP. Cholin- ergic M receptor blocker partially abolishes the effect of EA on LESP, but EA can restore the decreased LESP in the rats treated with cholinergic M receptor blocker. EA at Zusanli acupoint can increase plasma GAS and MTL levels, which are positively correlated with LESP of rats, indicating that some brain-gut peptides may play a role in the effect of EA at Zusanli acupoint.

Transformations of voltammetric data can help to extract specific information, e.g., the number of transferred electrons, and can reveal aspects of the studied electrochemical system, e.g., the contribution of adsorption phenomena. In this communication, we introduce a LabView-based software package, ‘eL-Chem Viewer’, which is for the analysis of voltammetric and amperometric data, and enables their post-acquisition processing using semiderivative, semiintegral, derivative, integral and elimination procedures. The software supports the single-click transfer of peak/wave current and potential data to spreadsheet software, a feature that greatly improves productivity when constructing calibration curves, trumpet plots and performing similar tasks. eL-Chem Viewer is freeware and can be downloaded from www.lchem.cz/elchemviewer.htm.
Neural mechanism of acupuncture-modulated gastric motility

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the acupuncture-modulated gastric motility and its underlying neural mechanism.METHODS: Intragastric pressure and/or waves of gastric contraction in rats were recorded by intrapyloric balloon and changes of gastric motility induced by acupuncture stimulation were compared with the background activity before any stimulation. Gastro-vagal or splanchnic-sympathetic nerves were recorded or cut respectively for investigating the involvement of autonomic nerve pathways. Spinalization experiment was also performed.RESULTS: Acupuncture-stimulation by exciting A delta and/or C afferent fibers, could only modulate gastric motility. Acupuncture-stimulation on fore- and hind-limbs evoked a moderate gastric motility followed by increased vagus discharges with unchanged sympathetic activity, while the same stimulus to the acupoints in abdomen resulted in reversed effects on gastric motility and autonomic nervous activities. The inhibitory gastric response was completely abolished by splanchnic denervation, but the facilitative gastric response to stimulation of acupoints in limbs was not influenced, which was opposite to the effect when vagotomy was performed. The similar depressive effects were produced by the stimulation at the acupoints homo-segmental to the gastric innervation in the animals with or without spinalization. However, the facilitation induced by the stimulation at the acupoints hetero-segmental to the gastric innervation was not observed in the spinalized animals.CONCLUSION: Facilitative effects of stimulating hetero-segmental acupoints are involved in the intact preparation of vagal nerves and spinal cord, while the inhibitory response induced by stimulating homo-segmental acupoints is involved in the intact preparation of sympathetic nerves. Only the acupuncture-stimulation with intensity over the threshold of A delta and/or C afferent fibers can markedly modulate gastrointestinal motility.

Electroacupuncture improves impaired gastric motility and slow waves induced by rectal distension in dogs

Abstract:Rectal distension (RD) is known to induce upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of RD on gastric slow waves (GSW) and motor activity and furthermore to investigate the effects and mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) on GSW and motor activity. Eight female hound dogs chronically implanted with gastric serosal electrodes and a gastric fistula were studied in six separate sessions. Antral motility, GSW, heart rate variability, and rectal pressure were evaluated for the above purposes. 1) RD at a volume of 120 ml suppressed antral motility significantly. Guanethidine blocked the inhibitory effect of RD. EA at ST36 was able to restore the suppressed antral contractions induced by RD (16.6+/-1.7 vs. 8.0+/-1.4, P<0.001). Naloxone partially blocked the effect of EA on antral contractions. 2) RD reduced the percentage of normal GSW from 98.8+/-0.8% at baseline to 76.1+/-8.6% (P<0.05) that was increased to 91.8+/-3.0% with EA. The effects of EA on the GSW were nullified by the presence of naloxone. 3) EA did not show any significant effect on rectal pressure, suggesting that the ameliorating effects of EA on RD-induced impaired gastric motility were not due to a decrease in rectal pressure. 4) EA increased the vagal activity suppressed by RD. In conclusion, RD inhibits postprandial gastric motility and impairs GSW in dogs, and the inhibitory effects are mediated via the adrenergic pathways. EA at ST36 is able to restore the RD-induced impaired GSW and motor activities, possibly by enhancing vagal activity, and is partially mediated via the opioid pathway. EA may have therapeutic potential for functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Abstract:Ventrolateral medulla(VLM) was one of the essential part of central pattern generator(CPG) in swallowing and electro-acupuncture(EA) was an important intervention in swallowing disorder. But the effect and mechanism of EA at acupoints on swallowing were unknown. The present aim to detect the effect of EA at Lianquan (CV23) on swallowing and swallowing-related(SR) interneuron in VLM. Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were operated and the swallowing reflex was induced through Double distilled water (DDW) infusion. Simultaneously, the numbers of swallowing were recorded. Then EA was given at Lianquan and Neiguan (PC6) and the neuron discharges in VLM were detected. A total of 72 neurons were recorded, 60 of which were correctly recorded after histology identification. Two types of SR neurons were found and the numbers of swallowing increased after EA at CV23 and PC6 compared with no EA group. The neuron response rates were 78.3% and 50% for EA at CV23 and PC6 respectively with significant difference (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the neuron spike patterns were changed after EA at CV23 and PC6. In addition, twenty-four rats were used for immunofluorescence after EA at CV23 and PC6. The results showed that c-fos positive cells in CV23 group were 20.63±2.35, while PC6 group was 14.13±1.78 and 6.88±1.42 in control group. There were significant difference between them (P < 0.05). These results indicated that EA could regulate the swallowing function via activating the SR interneurons in VLM under the physiological condition.

Abstract:Electroacupuncture (EA) or acupoint catgut embedding (ACE) plays a therapeutic role in functional dyspepsia (FD). Herein, we aimed to elucidate the influences of EA combined with ACE on gastrointestinal motility and gastrointestinal hormones in rats with FD. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into the control group, model group, EA group, ACE group, and EA + ACE group (n = 10). Except for the control group, the rats in all groups were modeled by combining neonatal iodoacetamide gastrogavage and modified tail-clamping stimulation. The rats were treated with different treatments according to their groups. The rats were observed for changes in general behavior, body weight, food intake, and paw mechanical pain threshold. Gastric emptying rate (GER) and intestinal propulsive ratio (IPR) were measured in each group, and serum gastrointestinal hormone (motilin [MTL], leptin, gastrin [GAS], vasoactive intestinal peptide [VIP], calcitonin gene-related peptide [CGRP], and somatostatin [SS]) levels, oxidative stress factors (superoxide dismutase [SOD] and malondialdehyde [MDA]) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) levels were also measured. Decreased mean body weight, paw mechanical pain thresholds, food intake, and GER and IPR were found in rats of the model group in comparison to the control group. Serum MTL, GAS, SS, and SOD levels were reduced, and serum leptin, VIP, CGRP, MDA, and 5-HT levels were increased in rats of the model group in comparison to the control group. Elevated mean body weight, paw mechanical pain threshold, food intake, GER and IPR, and serum MTL, GAS, SS, and SOD levels, and reduced serum leptin, VIP, CGRP, MDA, and 5-HT levels were observed in rats of the EA, ACE, and EA + ACE groups relative to the model group. EA combined with ACE treatment was more effective than the EA or ACE treatment alone. EA combined with ACE treatment improves gastrointestinal motility and gastrointestinal hormone levels, promotes food intake, and reduces visceral hypersensitivity in FD rats.

Abstract:To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on swallowing and its underlying mechanism, 32 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were chose and the electrophysiology was used to detect the discharge of nucleus ambiguus (NA) after EA at CV23 (Lianquan), GV16 (Fengfu), and other acupoints. The swallowing-related motor neuron was identified by antidromic stimulation through recurrent laryngeal nerve. Meanwhile, the swallowing numbers were induced by Double-distilled water (DDW) and the neuron discharges were recorded before and after EA. Beside, 50 SD rats were used for testing the c-fos expressions in NA after EA at different acupoints and the other 80 SD rats were used for chemical damage through the microinjection to bilateral NA. 58 neurons provided complete data after histological identification. And two types of swallowing-related (SR) motor neurons were identified, named spontaneous and silent neurons. We found that the onset latency of the first swallow was shorter and the swallowing numbers were increased after EA at CV23 than the other acupoints (P < 0.01). The excitatory neuron response rates were 66.67%, 71.11%, 42.22% and 35.56% for CV23, GV16, PC6 (Neiguan), and ST36 (Zusanli), respectively. The c-fos expressions on CV23 and GV16 groups were significantly higher than the other groups (P < 0.05). After chemical damage, the swallowing numbers could not be regulated by EA, but could be regulated by EA after fake damage. The results of the present study demonstrate that EA at CV23 and GV16 could regulate swallowing function via activating swallowing-related motor neurons in NA.

Abstract:In this paper, Eu(n+), Sm3+ doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared via solvothermal method, in which Ferric chloride is used as the iron source, and anhydrous EuCl3, SmCl3 as doping source. Eu, Sm valence in doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and effects of Eu, Sm doping amount on their structure, morphology, magnetic properties and PL properties were discussed. The results show, the Eu ions had doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the mixed-valence state, when the Eu and Sm doping amount were increased, the doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles changed from hollow nanospheres into spherical particles, and finally changed into uniform cube-shaped particles with 13 nm in diameter. Moreover, the doping sites for doping ions in doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles were discussed from Rietveld analysis of XRD pattern of the doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles. And the changes of the magnetic and PL properties with the doping amount were further discussed. It was found that higher Sm(3+)-doping amount led to stronger magnetic dipole transitions, while the Eu(n+)-doping amount had little effect on the magnetic dipole transitions, thus resulting in different changes in their saturation magnetization with doping amount.

Abstract:A general introduction to wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) and WCE antennas are firstly presented. The most important part of this paper lies in the investigation of the inductively loaded wrappable patch antenna. The original design is 18.5 mm in width and 31 mm in the length. The substrate material is LCP and the antenna radiates at 433 MHZ. In total 39 pairs of notches are averagely subtracted from the patch. Software-based simulation and optimization is performed in accordance with Rogers Duroid 5870 as a substrate material. The 5870-based study model is focused on theoretically exploring the properties of the structure. Additionally, some innovative structures are designed, including a log-periodic structure and miniaturised antenna for WCE applications for children.

Abstract:Given five quantified measures of emotional communication within a psychotherapy session and definitions of work, force and temperature drawn from classical physics, this paper presents calculations of patient and therapist entropy using both the traditional, caloric definition and Shannon's definition, grounded in the work of Boltzmann. Our results depend on the assumption that the patient/therapist system is closed and non-dissipative. We present models for reversible heat absorption and frictional heat dissipation--within the system--which have meaning in emotional communication and psychotherapy. Both calculations of entropy produced a lawful dependence on ln(l+t), where t is time into the session in seconds. The two calculations are essentially the same, verifying in the behavioral domain a law of physics held to be true of material nature. We also verify empirically that the limiting form of the caloric entropy for a purely silent therapist replicates the Shannon entropy for an individual in a monologue. The force field that moves the representations of patient and therapist in 5-dimensional space defines an irreversible process. Thus there are moments of disequilibrium change with respect to the measured variables of emotional communication and at least one moment of disequilibrium between every return to a prior state. This moment may be creative or traumatic. The force field is non-conservative, implying the existence of modalities of heat absorption for patient and therapist which may relate to individual characteristics and reflect human psychological variety. The force field constrains motion to an ellipsoidal shell whose geometry explains the logarithmic growth of Shannon entropy and the finding that the system's absolute temperature grows linearly with respect to time. The finding that the models and methods of physics reveal a degree of lawfulness in the mental/communicative domain as compared to the material speaks strongly for the isomorphic qualities of divergent levels of nature.
