Abstract:Additive manufacturing has been used to develop a variety of scaffold designs for clinical and industrial applications. Mechanical properties (i.e., compression, tension, bending, and torsion response) of these scaffolds are significantly important for load-bearing orthopaedic implants. In this study, we designed and additively manufactured porous metallic biomaterials based on two different types of triply periodic minimal surface structures (i.e., gyroid and diamond) that mimic the mechanical properties of bone, such as porosity, stiffness, and strength. Physical and mechanical properties, including compressive, tensile, bending, and torsional stiffness and strength of the developed scaffolds, were then characterised experimentally and numerically using finite element method. Sheet thickness was constant at 300 μm, and the unit cell size was varied to generate different pore sizes and porosities. Gyroid scaffolds had a pore size in the range of 600-1200 μm and a porosity in the range of 54-72%, respectively. Corresponding values for the diamond were 900-1500 μm and 56-70%. Both structure types were validated experimentally, and a wide range of mechanical properties (including stiffness and yield strength) were predicted using the finite element method. The stiffness and strength of both structures are comparable to that of cortical bone, hence reducing the risks of scaffold failure. The results demonstrate that the developed scaffolds mimic the physical and mechanical properties of cortical bone and can be suitable for bone replacement and orthopaedic implants. However, an optimal design should be chosen based on specific performance requirements.

Abstract:Hb Catonsville is an unstable variant in which glutamic acid is inserted into the alpha-globin chain between Pro-37(C2) and Thr-38(C3). The peptide sequence data are consistent with the DNA sequence of the polymerase chain reaction-amplified fragment of the variant globin gene, which shows the insertion of the triplet codon--GAA--into the mutant alpha-globin gene. In the normal alpha-globin gene cluster the codon for glutamic acid is GAG rather than GAA. Thus, there are two features unique to Hb Catonsville, one the insertion of a single residue into the interior of the alpha-globin chain, and two the presence of the alternate codon for glutamic acid. The experimental evidence suggests that Hb Catonsville may be an example of nonhomologous nonallelic gene conversion, an observation not previously reported in this gene family. The mutation occurs in the critical alpha 1 beta 2 interface of the hemoglobin tetramer and leads to a variant with high oxygen affinity, a reduced cooperativity, and Bohr effect.
Trabecular-like Ti-6Al-4V Scaffolds for Orthopedic: Fabrication by Selective Laser Melting and in Vitro Biocompatibility

Abstract:Porous metal scaffolds play an important role in the orthopedic field, due to their wide applications in prostheses implantation. Some previous studies showed that the scaffolds with trabecular bone structure reconstructed via computed tomography had satisfactory biocompatibility. However, the reverse modeling scaffolds were inflexible for customized design. Therefore, a top-down designing biomimetic bone scaffold with favorable mechanical performances and cytocompatibility is urgently demanded for orthopedic implants. An emerging additive manufacturing technique, selective laser melting, was employed to fabricate the trabecular-like porous Ti-6Al-4 V scaffolds with varying irregularities（0.05-0.5） and porosities（48.83%–74.28%） designed through a novel Voronoi-Tessellation based method. Micro-computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the scaffolds’ morphology.Quasi-static compression tests were performed to evaluate the scaffolds’ mechanical properties. The MG63 cells culture in vitro experiments, including adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, were conducted to study the cytocompatibility of scaffolds. Compressive tests of scaffolds revealed an apparent elastic modulus range of 1.93–5.24 GPa and an ultimate strength ranging within 44.9–237.5 MPa, which were influenced by irregularity and porosity, and improved by heat treatment. Furthermore, the in vitro assay suggested that the original surface of the SLM-fabricated scaffolds was favorable for osteoblasts adhesion and migration because of micro scale pores and ravines. The trabecular-like porous scaffolds with full irregularity and higher porosity exhibited enhanced cells proliferation and osteoblast differentiation at earlier time, due to their preferable combination of small and large pores with various shapes. This study suggested that selective laser melting-derived Ti-6Al-4 V scaffold with the trabecular-like porous structure designed through Voronoi-Tessellation method, favorable mechanical performance, and good cytocompatibility was a potential biomaterial for orthopedic implants.
Fatigue behaviour of titanium scaffolds with hierarchical porosity produced by material extrusion additive manufacturing

Abstract:Metallic porous structures (scaffolds) produced by additive manufacturing represent an important class of personalised implants used in load-bearing orthopaedic applications. As such, their fatigue performance must be excellent to prevent the need for revision surgery. This paper provides insight into the high-cycle fatigue behaviour of novel titanium scaffolds with hierarchical porosity and properties comparable to those of human bone that were produced by direct ink writing (DIW) and tested under cyclic loading typical for bone implants. Opposite to traditional expectations in the field of metal fatigue, scaffolds produced with an open intrastrand pore network (14.3%) endured nearly an order of magnitude more cycles than those with relatively compact strands (5.9%) and their normalized fatigue strength (62% of their yield strength in 106 cycles) was competitive with many current titanium scaffolds produced by other additive manufacturing technologies. Improved fatigue performance was related to fatigue crack growth shielding effects that reduced the crack growth rate, prolonged the crack path, and increased energy absorption. Consequently, these novel hierarchically porous titanium structures prepared by DIW can serve safely under cyclic loading conditions, and at the same time can provide multiple open porosity-related functionalities in advanced biomedicine and other industrial sectors.

Abstract:This paper shows that current mode class-D (CMCD) amplifiers with integrated parallel LC resonator can achieve high efficiency at RF frequencies. In contrast to the conventional class-D amplifier, output shunt capacitance discharge loss is eliminated in a CMCD amplifier topology by satisfying the zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition. To reduce parasitic resistance, bondwires are utilized to implement a high Q inductor in the LC resonator. An experimental CMCD amplifier with collector efficiency of 78.5% at output power of 29.5dBm (0.89W) is demonstrated using GaAs HBTs at 700 MHz.

Abstract:Abstract Background Additively manufactured porous metallic structures have recently received great attention for bone implant applications. The morphological characteristics and mechanical behavior of 3D printed titanium alloy trabecular structure will affect the effects of artificial prosthesis replacement. However, the mechanical behavior of titanium alloy trabecular structure at present clinical usage still is lack of in-depth study from design to manufacture as well as from structure to mechanical function. Methods A unit cell of titanium alloy was designed to mimick trabecular structure. The controlled microarchitecture refers to a repeating array of unit-cells, composed of titanium alloy, which make up the scaffold structure. Five kinds of unit cell mimicking trabecular structure with different pore sizes and porosity were obtained by modifying the strut sizes of the cell and scaling the cell as a whole. The titanium alloy trabecular structure was fabricated by 3D printing based on Electron Beam Melting (EBM). The paper characterized the difference between the designs and fabrication of trabecular structures, as well as mechanical properties and the progressive collapse behavior and failure mechanism of the scaffold. Results The actual porosities of the EBM-produced bone trabeculae are lower than the designed, and the load capacity of a bearing is related to the porosity of the structure. The larger the porosity of the structure, the smaller the stiffness and the worse the load capacity is. The fracture interface of the trabecular structure under compression is at an angle of 45 o with respect to the compressive axis direction, which conforms to Tresca yield criterion. The trabeculae-mimicked unit cell is anisotropy. Under quasi-static loading, loading speed has no effect on mechanical performance of bone trabecular specimens. There is no difference of the mechanical performance at various orientations and sites in metallic workspace. The elastic modulus of the scaffold decreases by 96%–93% and strength reduction 96%–91%, compared with titanium alloy dense metals structure. The apparent elastic modulus of the unit-cell-repeated scaffold is 0.39–0.618 GPa, which is close to that of natural bone and stress shielding can be reduced. Conclusion We have systematically studied the structural design, fabrication and mechanical behavior of a 3D printed titanium alloy scaffold mimicking trabecula bone. This study will be benefit of the application of prostheses with proper structures and functions.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing has been well established in many sectors, including the medical industry. For load-bearing bone implants, titanium and its alloys, such as Ti6Al4V, are widely used due to their high strength to weight ratio and osseointegrative properties. However, bone resorption and loosening of implants is related to the significantly higher stiffness of dense Ti6Al4V, leading to stress shielding. With the aging of population, there is an increasing need for orthopedic implants with a high success rate and a long implant life span. Besides that the treatment of non-healing segmental bone defects, where the self-repairing properties of bone tissue are not sufficient, is still a challenge. In both fields of application, patient-specific titanium implants combined with functionally graded porosity designed according to locally expected loads unlock new possibilities. Many studies underline the huge potential of the new design freedom to generate open porous structures and more personalized implants with enhanced mechanical properties that also integrate well with surrounding tissues. Integration of functionally graded open porosity into implants allows for the implant to more closely mimic the mechanical properties of human bone and its internal architecture. The results of this work represent the basis for developing complex porous titanium structures with various pore sizes and shapes to tailor structural mechanical properties and biological responses. Therefore, 3D porous structures with various pore sizes and shapes were designed and manufactured in Ti6Al4V using laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M). Based on these structures, the correlation of pore size and shape with cell ingrowth, morphology, metabolic activity, and early markers for bone formation (ALP activity) was investigated in static cell cultures using the osteosarcoma cell line Saos-2. Mechanical properties, such as stiffness and compression strength, were investigated with compression testing. The present study concludes that cell morphology, metabolic activity, and ALP activity are widely independent of pore shape and size within the tested range of 400–700 μm pore size. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the evaluated structures were in the range of cortical and trabecular bone. This opens the possibility to design mechanical properties with gradient porosity without decisively affecting biological responses.

Abstract:Objective: Three-dimensional (3D) printed porous titanium scaffolds serve as a bone tissue engineering technology that offers a promising solution for addressing bone defects. The scaffold's pore structure offers structural support and facilitates the proliferation of bone cells. Therefore, investigating the aperture and pore shape is of crucial for the development of 3D printed porous titanium scaffolds. Methods: Ti6Al4V scaffolds with the specified structure were fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM) technology. The scaffolds comprised fifteen cylindrical models measuring 20 mm in diameter and 20 mm in height. These models featured five scaffold shapes: imitation diamond-60°, imitation diamond-90°, imitation diamond-120°, regular tetrahedron and regular hexahedron. Each of these structural shapes was characterized by three different aperture sizes (400 μm, 600 μm and 800 μm). The porosity and mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V scaffolds were examined. Results: The measured porosity of Ti6Al4V scaffolds varied between 56.50% and 95.28%. The porosity increased with the size of the aperture. The mechanical properties tests revealed that, for identical apertures, the compressive strength and torsional strength were influenced by the configuration of the unit structure. Furthermore, the positive and lateral compressive strength as well as torsional strength of various unit structures exhibited distinct advantages and disadvantages. Within a uniform unit structure shape, the compressive strength and torsional strength were found to be correlated with the size of apertures, indicating that larger apertures result in decreased compressive and torsional strength. Conclusion: The configuration of the aperture and the shape of the pore were identified as significant factors that influenced the compressive strength. The compressive strength of Ti6Al4V scaffolds with various unit structure shapes exhibited both advantages and disadvantages when subjected to positive, lateral, and torsional forces. The enlarged aperture augmented the scaffold's porosity while diminishing its compressive and torsional strength.

Abstract:Commercially pure titanium (CP–Ti) gyroid scaffolds with interconnected pores and high porosities in the range of 68–73% and three different unit cell sizes of 2, 2.5, and 3 mm were manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) for bone implant applications. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the scaffolds with different unit cell sizes and sample orientations were evaluated. The microstructure of as-built struts was dominated by massive martensite and the average microhardness of the struts was 2.27 GPa, which is ∼50% higher than that of dense cast CP–Ti. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the as-built scaffolds ranged from 1465 to 2676 MPa and from 44.9 to 56.5 MPa, respectively, values which are close to the elastic modulus of trabecular bone and presumably strong enough to bear the physiological loading of implants. The as-built scaffolds exhibited excellent ductility up to 50% strain and no sign of fracture up to 20–30% strain under compression. The dominant compressive response of the scaffolds was observed by formation of a plastic hinge which led to rotation of the struts about the plastic hinges followed by development of local shear bands in struts in the long plateau region. These SLM-manufactured gyroid CP–Ti scaffolds with significantly enhanced hardness and compressive strength exhibited an elastic modulus close to that of trabecular bone and offer a promising improvement on CP–Ti scaffolds for bone implant applications.

On the Morphological Deviation in Additive Manufacturing of Porous Ti6Al4V Scaffold: A Design Consideration

Abstract:Additively manufactured Ti scaffolds have been used for bone replacement and orthopaedic applications. In these applications, both morphological and mechanical properties are important for their in vivo performance. Additively manufactured Ti6Al4V triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) scaffolds with diamond and gyroid structures are known to have high stiffness and high osseointegration properties, respectively. However, morphological deviations between the as-designed and as-built types of these scaffolds have not been studied before. In this study, the morphological and mechanical properties of diamond and gyroid scaffolds at macro and microscales were examined. The results demonstrated that the mean printed strut thickness was greater than the designed target value. For diamond scaffolds, the deviation increased from 7.5 μm (2.5% excess) for vertical struts to 105.4 μm (35.1% excess) for horizontal struts. For the gyroid design, the corresponding deviations were larger, ranging from 12.6 μm (4.2% excess) to 198.6 μm (66.2% excess). The mean printed pore size was less than the designed target value. For diamonds, the deviation of the mean pore size from the designed value increased from 33.1 μm (-3.0% excess) for vertical struts to 92.8 μm (-8.4% excess) for horizontal struts. The corresponding deviation for gyroids was larger, ranging from 23.8 μm (-3.0% excess) to 168.7 μm (-21.1% excess). Compressive Young's modulus of the bulk sample, gyroid and diamond scaffolds was calculated to be 35.8 GPa, 6.81 GPa and 7.59 GPa, respectively, via the global compression method. The corresponding yield strength of the samples was measured to be 1012, 108 and 134 MPa. Average microhardness and Young's modulus from α and β phases of Ti6Al4V from scaffold struts were calculated to be 4.1 GPa and 131 GPa, respectively. The extracted morphology and mechanical properties in this study could help understand the deviation between the as-design and as-built matrices, which could help develop a design compensation strategy before the fabrication of the scaffolds.
Mechanical Properties of Optimized Diamond Lattice Structure for Bone Scaffolds Fabricated via Selective Laser Melting

Abstract:Developments in selective laser melting (SLM) have enabled the fabrication of periodic cellular lattice structures characterized by suitable properties matching the bone tissue well and by fluid permeability from interconnected structures. These multifunctional performances are significantly affected by cell topology and constitutive properties of applied materials. In this respect, a diamond unit cell was designed in particular volume fractions corresponding to the host bone tissue and optimized with a smooth surface at nodes leading to fewer stress concentrations. There were 33 porous titanium samples with different volume fractions, from 1.28 to 18.6%, manufactured using SLM. All of them were performed under compressive load to determine the deformation and failure mechanisms, accompanied by an in-situ approach using digital image correlation (DIC) to reveal stress-strain evolution. The results showed that lattice structures manufactured by SLM exhibited comparable properties to those of trabecular bone, avoiding the effects of stress-shielding and increasing longevity of implants. The curvature of optimized surface can play a role in regulating the relationship between density and mechanical properties. Owing to the release of stress concentration from optimized surface, the failure mechanism of porous titanium has been changed from the pattern of bottom-up collapse by layer (or cell row) to that of the diagonal (45°) shear band, resulting in the significant enhancement of the structural strength.

Abstract:The repair of bone defect needs bionic scaffolds that meet biomechanical and bio-structural requirements. The triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) scaffold, with a radial gradient porosity distribution mimicking natural bone, is a potential high-performance biomaterial for orthopedic implants. In this paper, TPMS scaffolds with various radial gradient porosities, which resembled the graded structure of human bone, were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) with Ti6Al4V as a building material. The microstructure characteristics, mechanical properties and cell behaviors of scaffolds were systematically analyzed. Metallographic structure results showed that the grain size exhibited a radial decreasing porosity from the outer layer to the inner layer. The average porosity of all as-built samples ranged from 55% to 71%, and the average pore sizes ranged from 333μm to 674μm. The compression tests showed that the Young's modulus (2.7-7.4GPa) and yield strength (233-520MPa) of all samples were sufficient to satisfy the requirements of human nature bone. Additionally, the cell viability of scaffolds by measuring the cell distribution and proliferation after 48h, 72h and 96h showed expected biocompatibility. The significance of this work is to improve the understanding of the effect of design parameters on the mechanical properties and cell growth of the scaffolds.

Abstract:Although the design and mechanical properties of the porous structure have been widely explored, the porous structure and the unit cell with excellent mechanical properties matching the demands of femur should be further investigated. In this research, a porous structure based on face-centered cubic unit cell was constructed to match the femur's natural state and vertical direction at an angle of 7° via structural topology optimization. Three types of Ti6Al4V porous structures with different pore sizes were produced by selective laser melting (SLM). The influence of porosity on the compressive properties and deformation mechanisms was analyzed by experiments and simulations. In the compression process of three porous structures with different porosities, there are four obvious stages: the early elastic stage, the abrupt drop stage following stress increase, the Area III, and the ultimate densification stage. However, the four stages of porous structure vary in porosity. When the porosity is 81.5 %, the stress fluctuates in the region where the abrupt drop stage following stress increase. With increasing porosity, Young's modulus and yield strength decrease. Only the porous structure with a pore diameter of 0.7 mm and porosity of 67.5 % has a Young's modulus and yield strength meeting the requirements of bones, and is the best bone replacement. Bending is the unit cell's main deformation mechanism based on Maxwell equation analysis. Both the Johnson-Cook constitutive model and the experimental data demonstrate the shear deformation of porous structures. In comparison to the compressive performance of unit cells designed using traditional methods, the topology optimization's unit cells exhibit higher relative Young's modulus.

Abstract:This paper introduces a multilevel converter topology with common flying capacitors shared by phases. The unique feature of this configuration makes contribution to reduce the total number of components like switching devices and capacitors, which is closely related to the converter cost and volume. Therefore, low cost and high power density are expected to be achieved. A three-phase 5-level converter, regarded as the minimum system of proposed topology, is analyzed for operational principle explanation and verification. Simulation study and results using MATLAB/Simulink presented in the paper supported the idea and validated the feasibility. In order to implement experimental test, a 200V, 7.5kW mini-model with induction motor load was built up and the results shown are consistent with analysis and simulation.

Abstract:Uniform porous structures are widely considered as the biological implant materials, but they are difficult to meet the needs of complex bone transplantation. The radial gradient porous structure can match the mechanical properties of different levels of natural femur by adjusting the internal and external porosity. Based on Gyroid unit cells, a parameterized model was employed to create a biomimetic bone structure. Uniform porous structure with an average porosity of 50% and radial gradient porous structure were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM).The mechanical properties, deformation behavior and energy absorption properties of uniform and radially graded porous structures were studied by compression test and finite element method (FE).The results show that the compression test curves of all porous structure exhibit elastic stage, platform stage and densification stage. In the platform stage, uniform porous structures are prone to early shear failure and poor energy absorption performance, whereas radially gradient porous structures exhibit higher elastic modulus and yield strength. When the strain is 0.3, uniform porous structures and porous structures with an inner porosity of 80% mainly exhibit 45° flexural-shear failures, while radially gradient porous structures with inner porosity of 62.5% and 70% experience V-shaped shear failures. Porous structures with an inner porosity of 70% have good energy absorption (107.99 MJ/m 3 ), maximum energy absorption efficiency (46.94%), elastic modulus (5.2 GPa), and yield strength (296.02 MPa), matching the demands of cortical bone.

Abstract:Porous metals have been widely investigated as bioimplants to repair cancellous bone defects. Nevertheless, how to endure extreme stress and strike a balance between load-bearing performance, elastic modulus, and permeability are important issues. Freeze-casting is a novel technique for manufacturing micro-scale open-cellular lamellar porous materials. However, the pore size is relatively small because of the inherent constraints of the ice template. On the other hand, the scaffold with gyroid pore structures has been proven to have higher permeability due to its larger and smoother channels. To combine the advantages of both porous structures, the present study aims to develop dual-scale 316L stainless steel (316L SS) porous structures by incorporating the 3D-printed gyroid templates into the freeze-casting to further improve the lightweight, specific strength, energy absorption, and permeability of the porous structures. The results showed that macro-scale gyroid channels were successfully built into the micro-scale open-cellular lamellar porous scaffolds. The porosity of dual-scale scaffolds was 70.1 % - 74.4 %, which was higher than that of 53.1 % - 66.5 % in the single-scale scaffolds. The elastic moduli of the single-scale scaffolds were higher than that of the dual-scale scaffolds; both were within the range of human cancellous bone, demonstrating their mechanical compatibility. Furthermore, the dual-scale scaffolds presented a prominent rise in permeability compared to the single-scale scaffolds. Notably, the permeability of the 3G series scaffolds was comparable to human cancellous bone. In summary, the hierarchical 316L SS scaffolds with controllable macro-scale gyroid channels exhibit great potential for biomedical applications.
Fatigue Performance of 3D-Printed Poly-Lactic-Acid Bone Scaffolds with Triply Periodic Minimal Surface and Voronoi Pore Structures

Abstract:Bone scaffolds serve a crucial role in tissue engineering, particularly in facilitating bone regeneration where natural repair is insufficient. Despite advancements in the fabrication of polymeric bone scaffolds, the challenge remains to optimize their mechanical resilience. Specifically, research on the fatigue behaviour of polymeric bone scaffolds is scarce. This study investigates the influence of pore architecture on the mechanical performance of poly-lactic-acid (PLA) scaffolds under quasi-static and cyclic compression. PLA scaffolds with a 60% porosity were fabricated using extrusion-based 3D printing in various designs: Gyroid, Lidinoid, Fischer-Koch, IWP, and Voronoi. Results demonstrated that Gyroid scaffolds had the highest compressive strength (6.6 MPa), followed by Lidinoid, Fischer-Koch, IWP, and Voronoi designs. Increased strut thickness was linked to higher compressive strength. However, normalized fatigue resistance showed a different pattern. While scaffolds resisted fatigue cycles at low strain amplitudes, fatigue damage was observed at higher strains. Voronoi structures exhibited the highest normalized fatigue performance, enduring around 58,000 cycles at 85% strain amplitude, followed by Gyroid, Fischer-Koch, Lidinoid, and IWP structures. Enhanced fatigue performance in different topologies correlated with the minimum cross-sectional area of scaffolds. Given the importance of both static and fatigue strength, the Gyroid topology emerges as the superior choice overall.

Abstract:Selective laser melting (SLM) technology used for the design and production of porous implants can successfully address the issues of stress shielding and aseptic loosening associated with the use of solid implants in the human body. In this paper, orthogonal experiments were used to optimize the process parameters for SLM molding of Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) material to investigate the effects of the process parameters on the densities, microscopic morphology, and roughness, and to determine the optimal process parameters using the roughness as a judging criterion. Based on the optimized process parameters, the mechanical properties of SLM-formed TC4 alloy specimens are investigated experimentally in this paper. The main conclusions are as follows: the optimal combination of roughness is obtained by polar analysis, the microhardness of SLM-molded TC4 alloy molded specimens is more uniform, the microhardness of specimens on the side and the front as well as the abrasion resistance is higher than that of casting specimens, the yield strength and tensile strength of specimens is higher than that of ASTM F136 standard and casting standard but the elongation is not as good as that of the standard, and the elasticity and compressive strength of porous specimens are higher than that of casting specimens at different volume fractions. The modulus of elasticity and compressive strength are within the range of human skeletal requirements. This work makes it possible to fabricate high-performance porous femoral joint implants from TC4 alloy SLM-molded materials.

Abstract:Purpose This study compares the fatigue performance and biocompatibility of as-built and chemically etched Ti-6Al-4V alloys in TPMS-gyroid and stochastic structures fabricated via Powder Bed Fusion Laser Beam (PBF-LB). This study aims to understand how complex lattice structures and post-manufacturing treatment, particularly chemical etching, affect the mechanical properties, surface morphology, fatigue resistance and biocompatibility of these metamaterials for biomedical applications. Design/methodology/approach Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology was used to fabricate TPMS-gyroid and Voronoi stochastic designs with three different relative densities (0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) in Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy. The as-built samples underwent a chemical etching process to enhance surface quality. Mechanical characterization included static compression and dynamic fatigue testing, complemented by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for surface and failure analysis. The biocompatibility of the samples was assessed through in-vitro cell viability assays using the Alamar Blue assay and cell proliferation studies. Findings Chemical etching significantly improves the surface morphology, mechanical properties and fatigue resistance of both TPMS-gyroid and stochastic structures. Gyroid structures demonstrated superior mechanical performance and fatigue resistance compared to stochastic structures, with etching providing more pronounced benefits in these aspects. In-vitro biocompatibility tests showed high cytocompatibility for both as-built and etched samples, with etched samples exhibiting notably improved cell viability. The study also highlights the importance of design and post-processing in optimizing the performance of Ti64 components for biomedical applications. Originality/value The comparative analysis between as-built and etched conditions, alongside considering different lattice designs, provides valuable information for developing advanced biomedical implants. The demonstration of enhanced fatigue resistance and biocompatibility through etching adds significant value to the field of additive manufacturing, suggesting new avenues for designing and post-processing implantable devices.
