Abstract:Ultrasonography with color Doppler is the most quantitative analysis method for intra-renal parameters. There is a wide variation between authors in the measurement site and referencing the inter-lobar resistivity index (RI) in felines. Our objective is to morphometrically and ultrasonographically investigate the normal renal dimensions and vasculatures and draw up a normal reference value for the renal inter-lobar artery resistivity index (RI) using a Pulsed wave-Doppler ultrasonography. A total of twelve adult domestic cats were sedated and treated according to IACUC regulation guidelines to be examined using Doppler ultrasound. The same cats were used for morphometric investigation and divided into three groups regarding the used technique. The size difference between the right and left kidneys is slight, measuring 17 g (weight), 3.65 ± 0.06 cm (length), 2.54 ± 0.08 cm (width), and 2.21 ± 0.03 cm (thickness) for the right kidney, and about 15 g, 3.42 ± 0.06 cm, 2.32 ± 0.05 cm, and 2.13 ± 0.03 cm for the left one, respectively. There are three patterns of renal arteries' point of origin. The mean RI values of both kidneys were 0.57 ± 0.08 (0.50–0.67) in the right kidney and 0.60 ± 0.08 (0.51–0.69) in the left kidney. The gross examination and ultrasonography measurements did not have a statistically different effect on the actual renal dimensions. Moreover, 0.69 is considered the standard resistivity index (RI) threshold of the feline inter-lobar artery with no correlation to the animal's body weight.

Morphometric Evaluation of the Thoracic and Lumbar Vertebral Canal and Spinal Cord Using Computed Tomography in Healthy Korean Shorthair Cats

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the spinal morphometry of the thoracic and lumbar regions in normal Korean Shorthair cats using computed tomography (CT) and to investigate the relationship with variables such as sex, age and body weight. Fifteen clinically healthy Korean Shorthair cats (eight males, seven females) from Seoul National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital were included in this retrospective study. Measurements of the height, width and area of the vertebral canal and spinal cord on CT images were taken at the cranial, middle and caudal points of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae by three observers, and the ratios of the spinal cord area to the vertebral canal area were calculated. The significance of the differences in measurements between sexes and correlations with age and body weight were analysed. The mean age of the cats was 7 years (range: 2-12 years), with a mean weight of 5.27 kg (range: 2.6-8.3 kg). The height, width and area of the vertebral canal and spinal cord were significantly greater in males than in females (p < 0.05). The ratios of the spinal cord area to the vertebral canal area showed no significant difference between sexes (p > 0.05), and no significant correlations were found between the ratios of the spinal cord area to the vertebral canal area and age or body weight. This study provides useful reference intervals for spinal morphometry in the thoracic and lumbar regions of healthy Korean Shorthair cats and investigate the relationship with variables such as sex, age and body weight. This anatomical information may assist in the diagnosis and prognosis of thoracic, lumbar vertebral and spinal cord diseases using CT.
Evaluating value of spiral CT in enhanced-degree of renal clear cell carcinoma

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the value of biphasic dynamic enhanced 16-slice computed tomography(CT)in analyzing the enhanced degree of different diameter renal clear cell carcinoma.Methods The enhancement degree of 21 cases pathology-proven renal clear cell carcinoma during biphasic contrast enhanced spiral CT scans were reviewed.The renal clear cell carcinoma patients were divided into two groups with diameter <4cm(group A)and > 4cm(group B)according to initial diameter of renal cell carcinoma.Before surgery,plain CT scan and biphasic(cortico-medullary phase,paranchymal phase)dynamic contrast enhanced scan were undertaken.The attenuation of each tumor and muscle in cortico-medullary phase after enhancement was calculated via measuring region of interesting(ROI),and tumor-to-muscle ratio(RTM).Then the relativities of CT values and RTM of two groups were analysed by using statistical methods.Results The average diameter,CT value and RTM of both group A and group B were(2.59 ±0.66)cm,(105.66 ±18.43)HU,(1.78 ±0.24)and(5.66 ±1.22)cm,(112.04 ±24.71)HU,(1.95 ±0.50).There were no significant differences between the CT value or RTM of group A and group B(z,t=-0.14,-1.06,P> 0.05).Conclusions The biphasic contrast enhanced spiral CT scan can accurately indicate microvessel density characteristic of renal clear cell carcinoma.The enhanced degree of renal clear cell carcinoma should not be absolute factor in evaluating the biological behavior and malignance of the tumor.

Determination of the reference interval for urine kidney injury molecule-1 in 50 healthy cats

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of the present study was to establish a reference interval (RI) for urine kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) in healthy cats. Methods: History, physical examination, blood pressure, and feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus serology status were determined. A complete blood cell count, serum biochemical profile, urinalysis and kidney ultrasound were performed, and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, total thyroxine (TT4) and urine KIM-1 were measured. An RI was calculated and the effect of age, sex, body condition score (BCS), blood pressure, symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), serum creatinine concentration (SCr), phosphorus, TT4, urine specific gravity (USG) and mid-sagittal kidney length on urine KIM-1 was evaluated using a general linear model. Results: Of 69 recruited cats, 50 met the inclusion criteria. There were 35 male cats and 15 female cats, with a median age of 4.3 years (range 1.0-12.3), median weight of 5.11 kg (range 2.52-8.45) and median BCS of 6/9 (range 3-8). The median serum concentrations were SDMA 11.0 µg/dl (range 2-14), SCr 88.5 µmol/l (range 47-136), phosphorus 1.41 mmol/l (range 0.8-2.2) and TT4 32.0 nmol/l (range 17-51). Median USG was 1.057 (range 1.035-1.076), mid-sagittal left kidney length was 3.50 cm (range 2.94-4.45) and mid-sagittal right kidney length was 3.70 cm (range 3.06-4.55). The derived RI for urine KIM-1 was 0.02-0.68. USG was a significant (P <0.001) predictor of urine KIM-1. Individually, age, sex, blood pressure, BCS, SDMA, SCr, phosphorus, TT4 and mid-sagittal kidney length were not significant predictors of urine KIM-1. In a multivariate model, if combined with USG, SDMA concentration was predictive (P = 0.030) of urine KIM-1. Conclusions and relevance: Urine concentration was significantly correlated with urine KIM-1, which will be an important consideration when interpreting findings in cats with potential kidney injury.
Detection of sexual dimorphism of the foramen magnum in cats using computed tomography

Abstract:The foramen magnum is a large round or oval opening surrounded by parts of the occipital bone. It connects the cranial cavity with the vertebral canal. The foramen magnum is an important structure having various applications in veterinary practice and forensic medicine. The variability of its shape and sexual dimorphism allow it to be exploited for sex and age identification in different species. This retrospective study used computed tomographic (CT) images of the caudal region of the 102 mixed‐breed cat heads (55 males and 47 females). Eight linear measurements of the foramen magnum (FM) and occipital condyles were performed on CT images. The aim of the study was to find out if the linear measurements of the CT images of the foramen magnum showed variability between the sexes of the cats. In general, the values of the linear measurements in male cats were higher than in females. The mean maximum length of the foramen magnum (MLFM) was 11.18 ± 0.84 mm and 10.63 ± 0.72 mm in male and female cats, respectively. The mean maximum internal width of the foramen magnum (MWFM) was 14.43 ± 0.72 mm in males and 13.75 ± 1.01 mm in females. The difference between FM measurements in female and male cats was statistically significant (p value; FML: 0.001, FMW: 0.000). The MLFM confidence interval was 10.41 mm to 10.86 mm in female cats and 10.97 mm to 11.39 mm in males. The confidence interval of MWFM was 13.5 mm to 14.0 mm in female cats and 14.2 mm to 14.66 mm in male cats. With these intervals, we can predict the probability of sex in cats with 95% confidence. It was noted that measurements of the occipital condyles were not sex‐determining. The difference in foramen magnum index in female and male cats was statistically insignificant (p value; 0.875). As a result of the study, it was seen that the linear measurements of the foramen magnum were sex‐determining.

Abstract:The aims of this study were to evaluate left atrial size in cats with acute left-sided congestive heart failure. We hypothesized that left atrial size as determined by thoracic radiography can be normal in cats with acute left-sided congestive heart failure. One hundred cats with acute left-sided congestive heart failure in which thoracic radiography and echocardiography were performed within 12 h were identified. Left atrial size was evaluated using right lateral and ventrodorsal radiographs. Measurements were compared to two-dimensional echocardiographic variables of left atrial size and left ventricular size. On echocardiography, left atrial enlargement was observed in 96% cats (subjective assessment) whereas maximum left atrial dimension was increased (>15.7 mm) in 93% cats. On radiographs left atrial enlargement (subjective assessment) was found in 48% (lateral view), 53% (ventrodorsal view), and 64% (any view) of cats whereas left atrial enlargement was absent in 36% of cats in both views. Agreement between both methods of left atrial size estimation was poor (Cohen's kappa 0.17). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis identified a maximum echocardiographic left atrial dimension of approximately 20 mm as the best compromise (Youden index) between sensitivity and specificity in the prediction of radiographic left atrial enlargement. Left atrial enlargement as assessed by thoracic radiography may be absent in a clinically relevant number of cats with congestive heart failure. Therefore, normal left atrial size on thoracic radiographs does not rule out presence of left-sided congestive heart failure in cats with clinical signs of respiratory distress.

Abstract:Serum creatinine concentration, the classical biomarker of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats, has important limitations that decrease its value as a biomarker of early CKD. Recently, serum symmetric dimethylarginine concentration was introduced as a novel glomerular filtration rate biomarker for the early detection of CKD in cats. However, data on its specificity are still limited. The limitations of conventional biomarkers and the desire for early therapeutic intervention in cats with CKD to improve outcomes have prompted the discovery and validation of novel renal biomarkers to detect glomerular or tubular dysfunction. Changes in the serum or urinary concentrations of these biomarkers may indicate early kidney damage or predict the progression of kidney before changes in conventional biomarkers are detectable. This review summarizes current knowledge on renal biomarkers in CKD in cats, a field that has progressed substantially over the last 5 years.

Urinary D-amino acid profiles in cats with chronic kidney disease

Abstract:Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent in domestic cats. This study aimed to compare urinary D-amino acid levels between control and CKD-afflicted cats as a novel noninvasive method for assessing CKD. Cats were divided into control and CKD stage II groups in accordance with the International Renal Interest Society guidelines. The urinary DL-amino acid levels of the cats were analyzed using chiral tandem liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and their medical records were investigated. The CKD group had considerably lower urinary D-amino acid concentrations and enantiomeric ratios than the control group. The total urinary D-amino acid contents significantly correlated with blood parameters (creatinine and urea nitrogen). These findings may contribute towards the detection of CKD stage II in domestic cats.

Abstract:4744 Background: Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in men with a predilection to metastasize to the bone. There is a requirement for a chemotherapeutic agent capable of preventing or slowing down the growth of bone metastases. AZD3409 is a novel oral prenyl transferase inhibitor with anticancer potential. METHODS The effect of escalating doses of AZD3409 on proliferation of the malignant PC-3 and LNCaP, and non-malignant PNT2-C2 prostate epithelial cell lines was determined by CASY TT cell counter. PC-3 and PNT2-C2 colony formation was studied in co-culture using long-term human bone marrow stroma harvested from individuals with benign disease. Prostatic epithelial colony growth was measured using standardized quantitative techniques in the presence of escalating doses of AZD3409. Prostatic cellular invasion through matrigel (synthetic basement membrane) and cultured endothelial monolayers was measured in invasion chambers in the presence and absence of drug using cytokeratin labeled quantitation of migrating cells. RESULTS AZD3409 displayed marked anti-proliferative properties on non-malignant (PNT2-C2) and malignant (PC-3 and LNCaP) prostate epithelial cells, with a concentration of 10 nM resulting in a 50% inhibition of growth after 5 days. AZD3409 inhibits invasion through bone marrow endothelium towards bone marrow stroma, with a concentration of 4 μM inhibiting 50% of PC-3 invasion. Pre-treatment resulted in a 1000-fold decrease in the invasion IC50 with inhibition of invasion occurring at 10 nM, levels known to be attainable in vivo. AZD3409 inhibits colony formation in bone marrow stroma co-cultures resulting in reduced numbers of colonies (50% inhibition at 4 μM) and a reduction in epithelial colony size (50% reduction at 8 μM). CONCLUSIONS AZD3409 is a potent inhibitor of prostate epithelial cell proliferation and its anti-colony formation in bone marrow stroma co-culture suggests potential as an anti-metastatic agent. This hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that AZD3409 shows significant inhibition of prostate cancer cell invasion through human bone marrow endothelium. [Table: see text].

Abstract:A 5-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was referred for further investigation of pulmonary nodules incidentally detected on thoracic radiographs. Thoracic radiographs identified ill-defined soft tissue opacity nodules with small faint mineral opacity. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) revealed that bronchial dilation and bronchial wall thickening in bilateral cranial and accessory lung lobes. Round to ellipsoid mineralized concretions were found embedded in the intrabronchial soft tissue attenuation material. Based on radiography, CT, and cytology, the patient was tentatively diagnosed as having broncholithiasis with chronic bronchitis. This report described the CT diagnosis of broncholithiasis, which has been rarely reported in a cat.

Development of a Model of Tubulointerstitial Fibrosis Using Transient Unilateral Renal Ischemia and Delayed Contralateral Nephrectomy in Domesticated Cats

Abstract:Tubulointerstitial fibrosis is a classic histologic feature of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats and a final common pathway toward end-stage renal disease. Domesticated cats have been used in models of ischemia-induced renal fibrosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of 2 variations of a transient unilateral renal ischemia and delayed contralateral nephrectomy model of tubulointerstitial fibrosis in cats. Purpose-bred, young adult, domesticated cats underwent 90 min of surgically induced ischemia to the right kidney followed by delayed contralateral nephrectomy performed 21 d (RI-CN21d group; n = 10) or 90 d postischemia (RI-CN90d group; n = 12). Control cats underwent sham surgery followed by left nephrectomy 21 d after (sham-CN group; n = 3). Renal functional parameters, including glomerular filtration rate and serum creatinine concentration, were evaluated before and after surgeries. The right kidneys were harvested 120 d postischemia/sham. Renal histology with lesion scoring and histomorphometry for quantification of smooth muscle actin immunolabeling and collagen staining were performed on harvested kidneys. Severe acute kidney injury prompted euthanasia after left nephrectomy in 5/10 (50.0%), 2/12 (16.7%), and 0/3 (0%) of cats in the RI-CN21d, RI-CN90d, and sham-CN groups, respectively. A significant decrease in glomerular filtration rate by day 120, relative to baseline, occurred in cats in the RI-CN21d group (P < 0.001) and RI-CN90d group (P < 0.001) but not the sham-CN group (P = 0.76). All but one cat in the ischemia groups were azotemic at the study end. Kidneys subjected to ischemia had higher interstitial inflammation, tubular atrophy, and fibrosis scores compared with sham-operated kidneys. There were significant increases in smooth muscle actin immunolabeling and collagen staining in these kidneys, relative to the contralateral kidneys. In summary, 90 min of unilateral renal ischemia and delayed contralateral nephrectomy induced histologic and biochemical changes consistent with CKD in cats. A 90-d period between ischemia and nephrectomy resulted in improved survivability of the model.
Echocardiographic caudal vena cava measurements in healthy cats and in cats with congestive heart failure and non-cardiac causes of cavitary effusions

Abstract:Background: Echocardiographic indices of the inferior vena cava have been associated with elevated right atrial pressures in humans. Hypothesis/objectives: Describe caudal vena caval (CVC) sonographic dimensions in healthy cats compared to cats with cardiogenic cavitary effusion (CCE), cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE), or non-cardiac causes of cavitary effusion (NCE). Animals: 30 healthy control cats and 52 client-owned cats with CCE, CPE, or NCE examined at two university hospitals. Methods: Sagittal 2-dimensional (2D) and M-mode CVC dimensions were acquired from the subxiphoid view. Caudal vena cava collapsibility index (CVC-CI) was calculated. Variables were compared between study groups using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's Bonferroni testing. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess sensitivity and specificity for diagnostic categories. Results: Healthy cats had sagittal 2D and M-mode (median, interquartile range) CVC maximal dimensions of 2.4 mm (1.3-4.0) and 3.4 mm (1.5-4.9) and CVC-CI of 52% (45.2-61.8) and 55% (47.8-61.3), respectively. The CVC maximal dimensions in healthy controls were smaller than in cats with cavitary effusions or pulmonary edema (all P<0.05). CVC-CI was different between CCE and NCE (P<0.0001) with cutoffs of CVC-CI ≤38% (2D) or ≤29% (M-mode) being 90.5% and 85.7% sensitive, and 94.4% and 100% specific for diagnosis of CCE, respectively. Conclusions and clinical importance: Caudal vena cava measurements are larger in cats with cavitary effusions and cats with CPE than healthy cats. In cats with cavitary effusion, decreased CVC-CI, ≤38% (2D) or ≤29% (M-mode), was helpful in distinguishing between cardiogenic and noncardiogenic etiology.

ObjectivesUltrasonography is used in the evaluation of urinary disorders, and the resistivity index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) have been successfully used to detect early hemodynamic changes in the course of kidney diseases in humans and dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate RI and PI in cats with feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD).MethodsTwenty-nine client-owned cats were selected and divided into a control group (CG; n = 10), a group of animals with obstructive FLUTD (OG; n = 11) and non-obstructive FLUTD (nOG; n = 8). Clinical, laboratory and ultrasound evaluations were performed in all cats.ResultsRI and PI values for cats in the CG were below the upper limit of normal suggested in other studies, while cats with FLUTD showed significantly higher values in the assessment of RI (P = 0.027 and P = 0.034, respectively) and PI (P = 0.044 and P = 0.048, respectively) of the right and left kidneys.Conclusions and relevanceAlteration in renal blood flow was observed in cats with lower urinary tract disorders, even in the nOG group. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of renal blood flow changes related to non-obstructive FLUTD.

Abstract:Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease caused by a mutated feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) that causes a wide diversity of clinical findings. Antemortem diagnosis may be challenging as the non-effusive form causes pyogranulomatous inflammation in various organs including the eye, brain, omentum, liver and kidney compared to the effusive form. Since it has been discussed that the kidney is the organ most susceptible to FIP-related lesion development, this study aimed to evaluate the renal ultrasonography findings in cats with naturally developed non-effusive FIP. Clinical and renal ultrasonographic examinations of 17 cats with compatible clinical findings that would suggest the presence of non-effusive FIP were performed with the appropriate protocol. Both kidneys of all the cats were evaluated for echogenicity, size (longitidunal length), shape, presence of free fluid, if any, and echogenicity of this fluid. As a result of renal ultrasonography, it was observed that the most prominent abnormal ultrasonographic findings were cortical hyperechogenicity (11 out of 17 cats), medullary rim sign (11 out of 17 cats), renomegaly (10 out of 17 cats), pyelectasis (5 out of 17 cats), loss of corticomedullary differentiation (4 out of 17 cats) and distortion of internal architecture (4 out of 17 cats). In conclusion, it was observed that morphological and parenchymal alterations occur in the renal ultrasonographic evaluation in cats with non-effusive FIP, and renal ultrasonography could provide useful clinical information in evaluating the clinical reflection of vasculitis due to FIP. Although these abnormal renal ultrasonography findings were not specific for FIP, it was concluded that the combination of the observed ultrasonographic findings and other compatible clinical findings and their evaluation together can be used to increase the index of suspicion for antemortem FIP infection.

Abstract:The construction of three-dimensional multi-modal tissue maps provides an opportunity to spur interdisciplinary innovations across temporal and spatial scales through information integration. While the preponderance of effort is allocated to the cellular level and explore the changes in cell interactions and organizations, contextualizing findings within organs and systems is essential to visualize and interpret higher resolution linkage across scales. There is a substantial normal variation of kidney morphometry and appearance across body size, sex, and imaging protocols in abdominal computed tomography (CT). A volumetric atlas framework is needed to integrate and visualize the variability across scales. However, there is no abdominal and retroperitoneal organs atlas framework for multi-contrast CT. Hence, we proposed a high-resolution CT retroperitoneal atlas specifically optimized for the kidney across non-contrast CT and early arterial, late arterial, venous and delayed contrast enhanced CT. Briefly, we introduce a deep learning-based volume of interest extraction method and an automated two-stage hierarchal registration pipeline to register abdominal volumes to a high-resolution CT atlas template. To generate and evaluate the atlas, multi-contrast modality CT scans of 500 subjects (without reported history of renal disease, age: 15-50 years, 250 males & 250 females) were processed. We demonstrate a stable generalizability of the atlas template for integrating the normal kidney variation from small to large, across contrast modalities and populations with great variability of demographics. The linkage of atlas and demographics provided a better understanding of the variation of kidney anatomy across populations.

Abstract:In humans and dogs, especially brachycephalics, enlargement of the esophageal hiatus and insufficiency have been correlated with decreased lower esophageal sphincter pressure and increased frequency of gastroesophageal reflux. In cats, it has been suggested that gastroesophageal reflux occurs frequently with upper airway obstruction, including brachycephalics. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to determine whether the esophageal hiatal cross-sectional surface area (EH-CSA) differs between brachycephalic and nonbrachycephalic cats. Clinical records and CT images of cats that underwent thoracic, abdominal, and entire skull CT at multiple centers between January 2015 and September 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Esophageal hiatal parameters (EH-CSA, EH-long axis diameter, and EH-short axis diameter) and craniometric indices (cranial index, skull index, and facial index) were measured by using multiplanar reconstruction, and the correlation of craniometry with EH-CSA was investigated. Ninety-eight cats (group 1: 42 brachycephalic cats and group 2: 56 nonbrachycephalic cats) were included. Esophageal hiatal cross-sectional surface area in brachycephalic cats was significantly larger than that in nonbrachycephalic cats. The EH-CSA significantly increased with the craniometric indices tending to increase with brachycephalism. The present study contributes to the veterinary literature by providing the EH-CSA as anatomical evidence that could likely correlate to gastroesophageal reflux predisposition in brachycephalic cats.
Computed tomographic features of exocrine pancreatic carcinomas in dogs and cats

Abstract:Exocrine pancreatic carcinomas are uncommon in dogs and cats, and diagnosis with diagnostic imaging can be challenging. This retrospective, multi-institutional, descriptive study was performed to evaluate the CT features of exocrine pancreatic carcinomas. The CT examinations of 18 dogs and 12 cats with exocrine pancreatic carcinomas diagnosed by cytology or histopathology were reviewed. The CT features of exocrine pancreatic carcinomas included a well-defined mass in 28/30 (93%) with contrast enhancement in 27/30 (90%), commonly heterogeneous 22/30 (73%); often with a nonenhancing fluid to soft tissue attenuating center 12/30 (40%). The right lobe of the pancreas was the most common location, 14/30 (47%), then the left lobe, 10/30 (33%), and the body, 6/30 (20%). Extrahepatic biliary duct dilation was present in six animals; 5/6 (83%) of the masses were located in the right pancreatic lobe. Additional findings included peripancreatic fat-stranding 17/30 (57%), lymphadenopathy 16/30 (57%), peripancreatic soft tissue nodules 12/30 (40%), and free fluid 10/30 (33%). When comparing the imaging features of dogs and cats, there was a large overlap in imaging characteristics. There was a significant difference between the height of the masses, with dogs having larger masses (P-value.0028). Lymphadenopathy was more likely in larger masses [increased height (P-value.029)]. Cats were significantly older than dogs (P-value.0355). Pancreatic carcinomas were commonly identified as masses with heterogeneous contrast enhancement and a nonenhancing fluid to soft tissue attenuating center with concurrent peripancreatic changes (fat-stranding and/or soft tissue nodules) and lymphadenopathy.

Abstract:Background: Serum feline pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (fPLI) and trypsin-like immunoreactivity (fTLI) concentrations are commonly used in cats for the evaluation of pancreatic disease. The effect of kidney disease on these tests in cats are unknown. Objective: To investigate the effect of experimentally induced chronic kidney disease (CKD) on serum fPLI and fTLI concentrations. Animals: Surplus serum samples from 20 cats with CKD experimentally induced for an unrelated project and a group of healthy control cats. Methods: Serum fTLI and fPLI concentrations were compared between groups. Results: Mean (±SD) serum fTLI concentrations in 20 cats with CKD (117.8 ± 63.6 μg/L) were significantly higher than those in healthy cats (n = 32; 46.9 ± 17.5 μg/L; P < .0001). Serum fTLI concentrations in cats with CKD were above the upper limit of the reference interval in 13 of 20 cats (65%). Serum fPLI concentrations were not significantly different between cats with induced CKD (n = 18; 8.6 μg/L; range, 5.4-9.9 μg/L) and healthy cats (n = 41; 7.4 μg/L; range, 5.0-15.2 μg/L; P = .12). All cats with experimentally induced CKD had serum fPLI concentrations within the reference interval. Conclusions and clinical importance: Decreased renal function has a clinically relevant impact on serum fTLI concentrations and potentially could interfere with a diagnosis of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). Serum fPLI concentration was not affected by experimentally induced CKD and thus serum fPLI may be used for the diagnosis of pancreatitis in cats with kidney disease. Additional studies are needed to verify these results in cats with naturally occurring CKD.
