Abstract:The novelty of this study is providing a new toughening strategy in terms of the challenge of improving the poor toughness of zein film. Two types of biochar, pyrolysis biochar (PB) and hydrochar microspheres (HM), were blended into the zein system through solution casting to develop zein composite films with excellent toughness. The effects of biochar types and contents on the mechanical properties of the resulting composite films were investigated. The results indicated that better compatibility of zein composite films was achieved due to the hydrogen bond formed by biochar and hydrophilic amino acid in zein. A better surface structure of HM com-posite films was obtained than PB composite films by the uniform size and regular shape of HM. Better thermal stability shown in PB contributed to better thermal properties in the zein system than HM. Mechanical properties showed that tensile strength and modulus were increased with increasing PB or HM contents. Although increasing PB or HM contents decreased the elongation at break, the elongation at break reached a maximum of 475.47% at 0.1 g HM added composite film showing excellent toughness due to the strong interface binding and micro-nano size effect. The composite films prepared in this study have broad application prospects in packaging and agricultural films.
Rheological and Adhesion Property of Glycerol Modified Zein

Abstract:In order to study the rheological characteristics and adhesion property of glycerol modified zein,the effects of glycerol addition dose,shear temperature and shear rate were investigated.Results: The solution of glycerol modified zein is pseudoplastic fluid,showing shear thinning phenomenon.The glycerol addition dose,shear temperature and shear rate have remarkable effects on the rheological property of the zein.With increase of glycerol addition dose,the viscosity of the zein increases obviously.With rising of shear temperature,the viscosity decreases initially and then increases,and the lowest viscosity appears at shear temperature 308 K.With increase of shear rate,the viscosity decreases.With increase of glycerol addition dose,the zein adhesion property with bamboo particles increases initially then decreases,and strong adhesion strength is observed at glycerol dose 10%.With increasing viscosity of the modified zein,the adhesion property increases initially,and then decreases.

Abstract:Zein, a major protein of corn, is soluble in binary mixtures of ethanol and water. It has an amphiphilic character and is capable of self-assembly into nano- and microsized rods, spheres, and films upon solvent evaporation. The formation of microspheres is of particular interest for the development of delivery systems. Control over structure formation requires a better understanding of zein behavior in solution. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of zein concentration and the effect of ethanol-water ratio on the microphase behavior of zein solutions, believed to govern the morphology of microstructures after solvent evaporation. The Flory-Huggins solution theory was applied to model boundary lines between microphases in solution. The study generated information on the zein concentration-ethanol/water ratio conditions where microspheres are formed and provided insight into the microphase behavior of zein ethanolic solutions.
Aggregation of zein in aqueous ethanol dispersions: Effect on cast film properties

Abstract:In this study, we evaluate the influence of zein aggregation in aqueous ethanol dispersions on the properties of zein films. The effects of zein concentration, ethanol content and temperature on transmittance of zein dispersions were investigated. Dynamic light scattering was used to measure the degree of zein aggregation in the dispersions. The results indicate that particle size of zein increased with higher zein concentration, lower ethanol level and at lower temperatures. Zein films were prepared by casting from 70% and 90% aqueous ethanol dispersions at different drying temperatures and were evaluated for appearance, thermomechanical and mechanical properties. Higher ethanol levels and higher drying temperatures promoted the formation of more homogenous films. Films made from higher ethanol dispersions had lower glass transition temperatures than those made from lower ethanol dispersions. Moreover, the fragility factor classified the films as strong systems. Mechanical properties of films were measured at different drying temperatures. Stiffer and more resistant films were developed as the drying temperature increased. In conclusion, film properties can be tailored by controlling the composition of the film casting solvent and the drying temperature. Differences in film properties were found to relate to differences in initial degree of aggregation of zein dispersions.

Abstract:The effects of zein ratio, concentration of glycerol, liquid-solid ratio, ethanol concentration, pH and heat-treatment temperature on the properties of zein/wheat gluten composite films were researched. The results showed that elongation (E) increased with an increase in glycerol or ethanol concentrations, but it first increased and then decreased with increasing zein/wheat gluten ratio, heat-treatment temperature, pH and the ratio of liquid to solid; Tensile strength (TS) increased with the increase in heat-treatment temperature and pH, and decreased with the increase in glycerol or ethanol concentrations, and it reached a maximum value when the ratio of zein/wheat gluten was 20%, but had a minimum value when the ratio of liquid to solid was 8:1; Water Vapor Permeability (WVP) increased with an increase of glycerol concentration and the ratio of liquid to solid and ethanol concentration, but it decreased with increasing zein/wheat gluten ratio, heat treatment temperature, and pH of the film forming solution.

Abstract:Oleic acid and glycerol are two different molecules with different plasticization mechanisms, and their effects on the mechanical properties of zein film were investigated. The mechanical parameters of tensile strength (TS) and elongation to break (E) were improved by either oleic acid or glycerol in a dose-dependent manner up to 20%. When a combination of the two plasticizers in different ratios was used to make zein films, the highest TS was observed at a ratio of 3:1 of oleic acid to glycerol, and a synergy between them was revealed through a statistical analysis. A significant decrease of glass transition temperature (T-g) and different microscopic patterns examined by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) indicate the supramolecular structure was changed by the plasticizers. A combination of plasticizers with different plasticization mechanisms might be a better way to synergistically improve the mechanical properties of biopolymer-based films for practical applications.

Abstract:Gelation of chitosan dissolved in an alkali/urea aqueous solution promotes the mechanistic diversity of forming a membrane via aqueous phase separation (APS), which is conceptualized to highlight the advantages of using environmentally friendly solvents. When aimed at deepening the knowledge of regulating the structural formation, the alkaline dope of chitosan was employed in this study to investigate how the presence of ethanol in the coagulant could regulate the gelation behavior in APS and thereby change the particle-trapping mechanism. Both the gelling films and the particle-filtering membranes were in-situ characterized by optical coherence tomography (OCT) to compare the film-formation kinetics and the morphological variations in the resulting porous substructures, respectively. It was revealed that the ethanol-containing coagulant could induce the shrinkage of the gelling film and thereby favor the transverse coalescence of polymer-rich phases; that is, increasing the content of ethanol in the coagulant (over a range less than a critical value to avoid film deformation) would give rise to more tortuous substructures (for effectively capturing particles) primarily owing to the lower connectivity in the transverse direction. The theoretical analysis was supported by numerically evaluating the topological analog. This study not only confirms effectiveness of the ethanol-based regulation, but also establishes a paradigm for fabricating membranes with tailored topological characteristics.

Abstract:Hydrophilic konjac glucomannan (KGM)/hydrophobic ethyl cellulose (EC) film was prepared in the ethanol/water environment. The film-forming solution and film properties were both characterized to analyze the molecular interaction changes. Although higher ethanol usage enhanced the stability of the film-forming solution, it did not benefit the film property improvement. The SEM images showed some fibrous structure on the air surface of the films, consistent with the XRD results. The changing trend of mechanical properties and the FTIR results suggested that both ethanol content and ethanol evaporation impacted the molecular interaction during the film formation. The surface hydrophobicity results indicated that the ethanol content could cause significant EC aggregation changes on the film surface only with high EC contents. The water vapor permeability results suggested that higher ethanol usage decreased the compactness of the films. Considering all results, the 20 % ethanol content and the weight ratio of KGM: EC = 7:3 were suggested for the film preparation due to the superior properties in most properties. This study contributed to the understanding of polysaccharide interaction in the ethanol/water environment and offered an alternative biodegradable packaging film.

Abstract:This work was aimed to prepare wheat gliadin/chitosan (CS) blend films and to evaluate influence of CS content on properties of the films. Morphology observation using scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed a phase-separated structure and a phase reversion with respect to CS content in the blend films. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectrum measurements were conducted to assess the glass transition and microstructure of the films. Also studied were the mechanical properties and water barrier properties of the films. Results showed that gliadin/CS ratio had a significant effect on the functional performance of the films.
Hydrogel Films Prepared from LiOH/urea Aqueous Solution of Chitosan

Abstract:Traditional way to prepare chitosan hydrogel films is to dissolve chitosan in acetic acid or hydrochloric acid,then precipitate in alkali solution.Our research tried a new way to prepare chitosan hydrogel films in the following procedure: to make chitosan solution using an aqueous solution of LiOH/ urea as the solvent system,then to take freezing-blasting treatment to solvent chitosan,and to form hydrogel film through precipitatation in the sulphuric acid / ethanol solution.The chitosan hydrogel films made by the new method have high mechanical strength.Results by universal testing machine show that chitosan hydrogel film tensile stress strength is 2.28Mpa,which is much higher than chitosan hydrogel films prepared by traditional way.The tensile strain(e) is 226%,which shows excellent flexibility.The structure of the hydrogel possesses well-distributed honeycomb-like shapes,which have pore size of about 50nm~5μm.The crystal shape has been changed from α-to β-and the degree of crystallinity decrease.The interesting structure and low crystallinity can explain the increase of mechanical strength.

Abstract:As a simple and convenient technology to fabricate micron-to-nanoscale fibers with controllable structure, electrostatic spinning has produced fiber films with many natural advantages, including a large specific surface area and high porosity. Maize zein, as a major storage protein in corn, showed high hydrophobicity and has been successfully applied as a promising carrier for encapsulation and controlled release in the pharmaceutical and food areas. Proteins exhibit different physical and chemical properties at different pH values, and it is worth investigating whether this change in physical and chemical properties affects the properties of electrospun fiber films. We studied the pH effects on zein solution rheology, fiber morphology, and film properties. Rotational rheometers were used to test the rheology of the solutions and establish a correlation between solution concentration and fiber morphology. The critical concentrations calculated by the cross-equation fitting model were 17.6%, 20.1%, 20.1%, 17.1%, and 19.5% (w/v) for pH 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, respectively. The secondary structure of zein changed with the variation in solution pH. Furthermore, we analyzed the physical properties of the zein films. The contact angles of the fiber membranes prepared with different pH spinning solutions were all above 100, while zein films formed by solvent evaporation showed hydrophilic properties. The results indicated that the rheological properties of zein solutions and the surface properties of the film were affected by the pH value. This study showed that zein solutions can be stabilized to form electrospun fibers at a variety of pH levels and offered new opportunities to further enhance the encapsulation activity of zein films for bioactive materials.
Preparation and Properties of Cross-linked Gliadin/chitosan Films

Abstract:Gliadin(60wt%)/chitosan(40wt%) composite film with glycerol as plasticizer,glutaraldehyde or L-cysteine as crosslinker were prepared using solution-casting method.Influences of the amount of crosslinker on the mechanical properties,moisture absorption,water swelling and solubility of the composite film were investigated.The results showed that the two modifying methods can both significantly improve tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composite films.Tensile strength of the composite film increased by 5 times and Young's modulus increased by nearly 8 times with addition of 0.15wt% glutaraldehyde.Glutaraldehyde could lower water solubility of the composite film,while the reverse was true for L-cysteine.
Mechanism of the G/M ratio and zein in enhancing the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of sodium alginate films

Abstract:This study developed an edible film based on calcium-crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) using the casting method. The investigation assessed how the α-L-guluronic acid/β-D-mannuronic acid (G/M ratio) and zein addition influence the film's physicochemical properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy findings suggest that the G/M ratio modulates the film's physicochemical characteristics by altering SA molecular cross-linking strength and the film's network structure density. At a G/M ratio of 0.85, the film exhibits a more uniform network structure, enhanced moisture resistance, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties. Zein, evenly dispersed within the film matrix, establishes strong hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions with SA, enhancing the film's network structure and boosting its thermophysical, mechanical, and moisture resistance characteristics. The study demonstrates that modifying the G/M ratio and incorporating zein enhances the film's mechanical and hydrophobic properties, broadening its potential applications in food packaging.

Abstract:The presentation of approximately 40 dairy cows affected with left-side displacement of the abomasum (LDA) per annum in a cattle practice in East Gippsland, Victoria provided an opportunity to conduct a survey and case-control study of the disease in a grazing environment. The study, involving 37 dairy cows at pasture, revealed significant differences from the pattern of the disease occurring in the northern hemisphere where cows in older age groups, of larger frame size, higher production and fed high grain rations are at increased risk. Affected cows were diagnosed over a 10-month period and represented approximately 0.06% of the dairy cow population. Most cases were diagnosed in the early lactation period. Evidence for a genetic predisposition was suggested by the discovery that one sire generated a disproportionately large number (9) of the cows with LDA. Although affected cows were average producers in their herds, being a member of a high-producing herd was a significant risk factor.

Abstract:The solubility of zein varies with solvent types, therefore, affecting the physicochemical properties of film-forming solutions (FFS) and the fabricated zein films. The transformation of α-helix to β-sheet in zein molecules varied with solvent polarity, which influenced the self-assembly of zein. In this research, zein film was fabricated using various concentrations of aqueous acetic acid solvent (AAS) and aqueous ethanol solvent (AES). Zein was soluble over 96 % in 40–80 %(v/v) AAS and 60–80 % in 75–95 %(v/v) AES, respectively. SDS-PAGE reveals that the insolubility of the β-zein and dimers of α-zein was responsible for the solubility difference. The formation of the zein network affects the mechanical and physical properties of the film. The tensile strength of the film was over 25 MPa when the β-zein was soluble, and the zeta potential of FFS was over + 25 mV. Films fabricated with AAS had at least five times higher Young's modulus than AES films. The transformation ratio of α-helix to β-sheet and reassembling of β-sheet into strips during self-assembly depended on the water percentage in the FFS. The free water stuck in the film network contributed to the moisture content of 8–10 % in AAS films and 11–16 % in AES films in films was observed by LF NMR. This study suggested that a stable FFS (zeta potential > +40 mV) and organized network in the film could be obtained by dissolving zein in AAS (≤ 70 %, v/v) than in AES.

Abstract:Abstract The effect of using four plasticizers namely ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol and sorbitol on mechanical and water barrier properties of transglutaminase cross-linked zein–oleic acid composite films was investigated. Results revealed that both mechanical and water barrier properties of the films were significantly affected ( p <0.05) by plasticizer type. Tensile strength (TS), water vapour permeability (WVP) and solubility (SB) values were all better in ethylene glycol control plasticized films compared to other plasticizers. Furthermore, irrespective of plasticizer type, transglutaminase treatment improved TS while when oleic acid was incorporated into the films in the range of 1–4% based on zein weight, the mechanical and water barrier properties of the composite film were diversely affected. Results from scanning electron microscopy for the 2% oleic acid-incorporated composite films revealed a rough and irregular surface morphology for the sorbitol plasticized films. Overall, ethylene glycol provided better mechanical and water barrier properties.

Facile Dissolution of Zein Using a Common Solvent Dimethyl Sulfoxide.

Abstract:The conformation and stability of zein in solution are closely associated with its solvation process and influence the mechanical properties of the related zein-based materials. In this work, a common solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used to dissolve zein, rather than solvents frequently used such as aqueous ethanol and acetic acid. It was found that DMSO could dissolve zein readily and the solution was stable for at least 2 weeks. Rheological analysis and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were employed to characterize the zein DMSO solution. Results of rheological analysis suggested a Huggins coefficient of 0.24, indicating DMSO to be a good solvent for zein. SAXS results revealed that zein adopted an elongated conformation and had dimensions of 2.8 nm × 2.8 nm × 14.8 nm in DMSO solution. Moreover, robust zein films were fabricated from zein DMSO solutions. The content of residual DMSO in the films was determined to be approximately 15 wt % by thermogravimetric analysis, in consistence with the value obtained by other two methods. The film showed a large breaking strain of 320.6% with a considerable breaking stress of 1.9 MPa, yielding a breaking energy of 376.2 MJ/m3. Therefore, the ease of dissolution and good mechanical performance of the final zein-based material make DMSO a potential solvent for fabrication of zein materials, thereby improving the scope of practical applications of zein.

Abstract:To illuminate the interactions in N-[(2-hydroxyl)-propyl-3-trimethyl ammonium] chitosan chloride (HTCC)/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based films, the film-forming solutions were studied by rheology, and HTCC/CMC based films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The HTCC/CMC based film-forming solutions with glycerol (polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and anthocyanin) showed shear-thinning behavior. The apparent viscosity of the HTCC/CMC/glycerol (PVA and anthocyanin) film-forming solutions decreased slower than that of HTCC/CMC film-forming solution, due to the electrostatic interaction between HTCC and CMC, and hydrogen bonding interaction between the two biomacromolecules and glycerol, PVA and anthocyanin, which resulted in the formation of three-dimensional networks. The anthocyanin with rigid molecular structure formed different three-dimensional matrix with HTCC/CMC, resulted in viscosity dominated film-forming solution. The pH affected the electrostatic interaction between HTCC, CMC, and anthocyanin through neutralizing –COO<sup>−</sup> groups, and temperature showed a synergistic effect on both electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The inter-molecular interactions resulted in the red-shift of typical absorption peaks, and the increase of initial decomposition temperature and decomposition enthalpy of HTCC/CMC based films. The homogenous and smooth surface, and the compact texture of HTCC/CMC based films confirmed the intermolecular interaction between HTCC, CMC, and PVA (glycerol and anthocyanin).Interactions in N-[(2-hydroxyl)-propyl-3-trimethyl ammonium] chitosan chloride and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose based filmsThe HTCC/CMC/glycerol (PVA, anthocyanin) blend solutions show shear-thinning behavior, and the strong interaction between the molecules resists the decrease of viscosity.

[Activity of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and vasopressin level in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension].

Abstract:AIM Assessment of RAAS and vasopressin in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS Activity of plasma renin (APR), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), plasma levels of angiotensin II (AII) and vasopressin (VP), serum concentration of aldosteron (AS) were measured by radioimmunoassay and enzyme immunoassay in 21 PPH patients with circulatory failure (age 34.7 +/- 2.1 years), 11 patients with NYHA functional class II-III, 10 with class IV, and 10 control subjects (age 29.8 +/- 1.5 years). RESULTS Compared to controls, 21 PPH patients had elevated RAAS parameters: APR up to 3.52 ng/ml/h (p < 0.05), activity of ACE up to 43.13 units, AII level up to 33.93 ng/ml (p < 0.01), AS up to 468.86 ng/ml (p < 0.01), VP up to 5.26 ng/ml (p < 0.001). Circulatory failure progression resulted in activation of all the RAAS components. This and VP activation was the greatest in PPH patients with ACE > 5 ng/ml/h. PPH patients with mean pressure in the pulmonary artery higher than 60 mm Hg demonstrated higher ARP, AS, VP, AII, ACE than those who had this pressure under 60 mm Hg. CONCLUSION PPH patients display a noticeable activation of RAAS and VP. This activation seems to be secondary as the changes increase with elevation of the pressure in the pulmonary artery and aggravation of circulatory insufficiency. Plasma renin activity determines the degree of RAAS activation as a whole. The discovered activation of RAAS in PPH gives grounds for doubts in the validity of using ACE inhibitors in the treatment of PPH.
Structural, Thermal, Physical, Mechanical, and Barrier Properties of Chitosan Films with the Addition of Xanthan Gum.

Abstract:Films based on chitosan and xanthan gum were prepared using casting technique aiming to investigate the potential of these polymers as packaging materials. Six formulations of films were studied varying the proportion of chitosan and xanthan gum: 100:0 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C100XG0 film); 90:10 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C90XG10 film); 80:20 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C80XG20 film); 70:30 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C70XG30 film); 60:40 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C60XG40 film); and 50:50 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C50XG50 film). The total quantity of solids (chitosan and xanthan gum) in the filmogenic solution was 1.5 g per 100 mL of aqueous solution for all treatments, according to the proportion of each polymer. The films were evaluated by their functional groups, structural, thermal, morphological, physical, mechanical, and barrier properties. All films have presented endothermic peaks in the range of 122 to 175 °C and broad exothermic peaks above 200 °C, which were assigned to the melting temperature and thermal decomposition, respectively. These results demonstrated that films with xanthan gum have the highest Tm and Δm H. The films containing higher content of xanthan gum show also the highest tensile strength and the lowest elongation. Xanthan gum addition did not affect the water vapor permeability, solubility, and moisture of films. This set of data suggests the formation of chitosan-xanthan complexes in the films.
