Abstract:In recent times, metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been regarded as having important commercial utility. However, the potential toxicity of these nanomaterials has also been a crucial research concern. In this regard, an important solution for ensuring lower toxicity levels and thereby facilitating an unhindered application in human consumer products is the green synthesis of these particles. Although a naïve approach, the biological synthesis of metal oxide NPs using microorganisms and plant extracts opens up immense prospects for the production of biocompatible and cost-effective particles with potential applications in the healthcare sector. An important area that calls for attention is cancer therapy and the intervention of nanotechnology to improve existing therapeutic practices. Metal oxide NPs have been identified as therapeutic agents with an extended half-life and therapeutic index and have also been reported to have lesser immunogenic properties. Currently, biosynthesized metal oxide NPs are the subject of considerable research and analysis for the early detection and treatment of tumors, but their performance in clinical experiments is yet to be determined. The present review provides a comprehensive account of recent research on the biosynthesis of metal oxide NPs, including mechanistic insights into biological production machinery, the latest reports on biogenesis, the properties of biosynthesized NPs, and directions for further improvement. In particular, scientific reports on the properties and applications of nanoparticles of the oxides of titanium, cerium, selenium, zinc, iron, and copper have been highlighted. This review discusses the significance of the green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles, with respect to therapeutically based pharmaceutical applications as well as energy and environmental applications, using various novel approaches including one-minute sonochemical synthesis that are capable of responding to various stimuli such as radiation, heat, and pH. This study will provide new insight into novel methods that are cost-effective and pollution free, assisted by the biodegradation of biomass.

Abstract:Transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) and their oxides have attracted considerable interest due to their fascinating and promising applications in biomedical, energy, environment, catalytic processes, etc. These NPs are generated using three approaches including physical, chemical, and biological to give them the right shape, size, and large surface area. However, there are concerns about energy consumption, cost, safety, and environmental problems with the physical and chemical approach. The biological approach is preferred in these years, because it is simple, cost effective and environmentally friendly. In this approach, numerous species of plants, microbes, algae, and fungi are used to synthesize NPs. Currently; the use of plant extracts is preferred for the synthesis of NPs, because it is a straightforward, low-cost, and one-pot process with a high reaction rate. The phytochemical compounds contained in the plant extract not only play a role as reducing and stabilizing agents in the synthesis process, but also enhance the therapeutic effects of the compounds. In this review article, the advances in the biosynthesis of NPs of transition metals and their oxides of nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), and manganese (Mn) using plant extracts are presented. In addition, the antibacterial, anticancer, and cytotoxic properties of the synthesized NPs for biomedical applications are discussed. Further, the antibacterial mechanism of the metal and metal oxide NPs is evaluated. Furthermore, application of these NPs in tissue engineering, advantages, and disadvantages are presented. Moreover, the size, morphology, and mechanism of the biosynthesized NPs using various plant parts and their applications are investigated. Finally, the challenges and future prospects related to green synthesis methods are discussed.

Abstract:A large number of metallic nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by using different plant extracts and microbes including bacteria, fungi viruses and microalgae. Some of these metallic nanoparticles showed strong antimicrobial activities against phytopathogens. Here, we summarized these green-synthesized nanoparticles from plants and microbes and their applications in the control of plant pathogens. We also discussed the potential deleterious effects of the metallic nanoparticles on plants and beneficial microbial communities associated with plants. Overall, this review calls for attention regarding the use of green-synthesized metallic nanoparticles in controlling plant diseases and clarification of the risks to plants, plant-associated microbial communities, and environments before using them in agriculture.

The use of the green approach is now considered simple, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and renewable using plant and microbe extracts as reducing and stabilizing agents. Phytochemicals in plant extracts and enzymes, coenzymes, proteins, etc. of microorganisms are responsible for the transformation of metal ions into nanoparticles. Therefore, the present review highlights the green synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, plausible reaction mechanisms, and the role of the biomolecules in the synthesis. Challenges associated with green synthesis methods are discussed.

Abstract:Nanoparticles and nanotechnology developments continue to advance the livelihood of humankind. However, health challenges due to microorganisms and cancerous cells continue to threaten many people’s lives globally. Therefore, new technological interventions are of great importance. The phytochemicals present in medicinal plants are suggested as biocompatible, cost-effective, and regenerative sources that can be utilized for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Different plant extracts with various phytochemical constituents can form nanoparticles with specific shapes, sizes, and optical properties. This review focuses on advances in green nanotechnology and provides details on reliable synthetic routes toward medically and biocompatible relevant metallic nanoparticles. We cover a wide range of applications that use phytonanoparticles with an in-depth look at what makes these materials interesting. The study also provides details of the literature on the interventions made in phytonanotechnology for the production of plant-mediated synthesis and capped metallic nanoparticles and their applications in various industries. It was observed that a variety of plants have been well studied, and detailed findings have been reported; however, the study of Phyllanthus is still in its early stages, and more needs to be uncovered.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have piqued the curiosity of researchers all over the world due to their extensive biological activity. They are less toxic and biodegradable with the capacity to greatly boost pharmacophore bioactivity. ZnO-NPs are the most extensively used metal oxide nanoparticles in electronic and optoelectronics because of their distinctive optical and chemical properties which can be readily modified by altering the morphology and the wide bandgap. The biosynthesis of nanoparticles using extracts of therapeutic plants, fungi, bacteria, algae, etc., improves their stability and biocompatibility in many biological settings, and its biofabrication alters its physiochemical behavior, contributing to biological potency. As such, ZnO-NPs can be used as an effective nanocarrier for conventional drugs due to their cost-effectiveness and benefits of being biodegradable and biocompatible. This article covers a comprehensive review of different synthesis approaches of ZnO-NPs including physical, chemical, biochemical, and green synthesis techniques, and also emphasizes their biopotency through antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antiviral, wound healing, and cardioprotective activity. Green synthesis from plants, bacteria, and fungus is given special attention, with a particular emphasis on extraction techniques, precursors used for the synthesis and reaction conditions, characterization techniques, and surface morphology of the particles.

Abstract:Green synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) using various plant extracts as reducing and capping agents has gained attention in recent research. The green synthesis of ZnO NPs offers several advantages such as being simple, eco-friendly, safe, cost-effective, and reproducible approach with high stability. Hence, this article provides an overview of zinc metal and ZnO compounds, and traditional chemical and physical synthesis of ZnO NPs with primary focuses on the green synthesis of ZnO NPs. This study discusses various plant extracts used and the proposed mechanisms in the green synthesis of ZnO NPs. Additionally, it explores the cytotoxic mechanisms of the green-synthesized ZnO NPs and addresses the various biomedical applications of ZnO NPs, including antibacterial, anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing. Moreover, the review critically discusses the toxicity of ZnO NPs and emphasizes the need for more toxicological studies to ensure the safety and facilitate the risk assessments and risk management of ZnO NPs. Furthermore, this review underlines the challenges associated with the translation process of ZnO NPs from bench to market, including the complex and time-consuming regulatory approval process for ZnO NPs, which requires a multidisciplinary approach involving scientists, regulators, and manufacturers.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has attracted the attention of researchers from different scientific fields because of the escalated properties of nanomaterials compared with the properties of macromolecules. Nanomaterials can be prepared through different approaches involving physical and chemical methods. The development of nanomaterials through plant‐based green chemistry approaches is more advantageous than other methods from the perspectives of environmental safety, animal, and human health. The biomolecules and metabolites of plants act as reducing and capping agents for the synthesis of metallic green nanomaterials. Plant‐based synthesis is a preferred approach as it is not only cost‐effective, easy, safe, clean, and eco‐friendly but also provides pure nanomaterials in high yield. Since nanomaterials have antimicrobial and antioxidant potential, green nanomaterials synthesized from plants can be used for a variety of biomedical and environmental remediation applications. Past studies have focused mainly on the overall biogenic synthesis of individual or combinations of metallic nanomaterials and their oxides from different biological sources, including microorganisms and biomolecules. Moreover, from the viewpoint of biomedical applications, the literature is mainly focusing on synthetic nanomaterials. Herein, we discuss the extraction of green molecules and recent developments in the synthesis of different plant‐based metallic nanomaterials, including silver, gold, platinum, palladium, copper, zinc, iron, and carbon. Apart from the biomedical applications of metallic nanomaterials, including antimicrobial, anticancer, diagnostic, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine applications, their environmental remediation potential is also discussed. Abstract:Researchers are swarming to nanotechnology because of its potentially game-changing applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. This fast-growing, cutting-edge technology is trying different approaches for synthesizing nanoparticles of specific sizes and shapes. Nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized using physical and chemical processes; there is an urgent demand to establish environmentally acceptable and sustainable ways for their synthesis. The green approach of nanoparticle synthesis has emerged as a simple, economical, sustainable, and eco-friendly method. In particular, phytoassisted plant extract synthesis is easy, reliable, and expeditious. Diverse phytochemicals present in the extract of various plant organs such as root, leaf, and flower are used as a source of reducing as well as stabilizing agents during production. Green synthesis is based on principles like prevention/minimization of waste, reduction of derivatives/pollution, and the use of safer (or non-toxic) solvent/auxiliaries as well as renewable feedstock. Being free of harsh operating conditions (high temperature and pressure), hazardous chemicals and the addition of external stabilizing or capping agents makes the nanoparticles produced using green synthesis methods particularly desirable. Different metallic nanomaterials are produced using phytoassisted synthesis methods, such as silver, zinc, gold, copper, titanium, magnesium, and silicon. Due to significant differences in physical and chemical properties between nanoparticles and their micro/macro counterparts, their characterization becomes essential. Various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques have been employed for conformational details of nanoparticles, like shape, size, dispersity, homogeneity, surface structure, and inter-particle interactions. UV-visible spectroscopy is used to examine the optical properties of NPs in solution. XRD analysis confirms the purity and phase of NPs and provides information about crystal size and symmetry. AFM, SEM, and TEM are employed for analyzing the morphological structure and particle size of NPs. The nature and kind of functional groups or bioactive compounds that might account for the reduction and stabilization of NPs are detected by FTIR analysis. The elemental composition of synthesized NPs is determined using EDS analysis. Nanoparticles synthesized by green methods have broad applications and serve as antibacterial and antifungal agents. Various metal and metal oxide NPs such as Silver (Ag), copper (Cu), gold (Au), silicon dioxide (SiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), copper oxide (CuO), etc. have been proven to have a positive effect on plant growth and development. They play a potentially important role in the germination of seeds, plant growth, flowering, photosynthesis, and plant yield. The present review highlights the pathways of phytosynthesis of nanoparticles, various techniques used for their characterization, and their possible roles in the physiology of plants.

It resulted in the release of several dangerous compounds and solvents as the nanoparticles were being formed. Currently, Researchers interested in preparing nanoparticles (NPs) via biological approach due to their unique physiochemical properties which took part in reducing the environmental risks. However, a number of microbial species are causing dangerous illnesses and are a threat to the entire planet. The metal and metal oxide nanoparticles played a significant role in the identification and elimination of microbes when prepared using natural extract. Its biological performance is thus also becoming exponentially more apparent than it was using in conventional techniques. Despite the fact that they hurt germs, their small size and well-defined shape encourage surface contact with them. The generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), weakens the bacterial cell membrane by allowing internal cellular components to seep out. The bacterium dies as a result of this. Numerous studies on different nanoparticles and their antibacterial efficacy against various diseases are still accessible. The main objective of the biogenic research on the synthesis of key metals and metal oxides (such as gold, silver, titanium dioxide, nickel oxide, and zinc oxide) using various plant extracts is reviewed in this study along with the process of nanoparticle formation and the importance of phytochemicals found in the plant extract.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is a fast-expanding area with a wide range of applications in science, engineering, health, pharmacy, and other fields. Among many techniques that are employed toward the production of nanoparticles, synthesis using green technologies is the simplest and environment friendly. Nanoparticles produced from plant extracts have become a very popular subject of study in recent decades due to their diverse advantages such as low-cost synthesis, product stability, and ecofriendly protocols. These merits have prompted the development of nanoparticles from a variety of sources, including bacteria, fungi, algae, proteins, enzymes, etc., allowing for large-scale production with minimal contamination. However, nanoparticles obtained from plant extracts and phytochemicals exhibit greater reduction and stabilization and hence have proven the diversity of properties, like catalyst/photocatalyst, magnetic, antibacterial, cytotoxicity, circulating tumor deoxy ribo nucleic acid (CT-DNA) binding, gas sensing, etc. In the current scenario, nanoparticles can also play a critical role in cleaning wastewater and making it viable for a variety of operations. Nano-sized photocatalysts have a great scope toward the removal of large pollutants like organic dyes, heavy metals, and pesticides in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner from industrial effluents. Thus, in this review article, we discuss the synthesis of several metal nanoparticles using diverse plant extracts, as well as their characterization via techniques like UV-vis (ultraviolet-visible), XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), etc., and catalytic activity on various hazardous systems.

Abstract:The biogenic production of plant-derived nanoparticles (NPs), with a spotlight on their potential as eco-friendly sustainable catalysts, is a major topic of study in the field of plant research, and their potential uses are recently being studied in nanocatalysis research. The biogenic synthesis of NPs from plants appears as a viable and effective strategy to create quick and efficient technologies and, yet, it has seldom been studied. Such NPs are well-suited for a range of biological applications because of their notable antioxidant, antibacterial, and antimicrobial activities. Some of these are also utilized as medications in healthcare, or their structural characteristics have served as a model for the synthesis of more potent synthetic pharmaceuticals. Increasing the synthesis of these secondary metabolites may be accomplished in various ways, one of which is by using nanoparticles that act as elicitors. Nevertheless, nanoparticles may offer various additional advantages for medicinal and aromatic plants, such as accelerated plant development, enhanced photosynthetic efficiency, and general performance, depending on the precise particle size, composition, concentration, and application method. Acknowledging these applications, the current review delved the updated information on exploring the medicinal plants used in NP synthesis. The suggested mechanisms of action of NPs on the modulation of plant secondary metabolism and biomedical applications are also discussed. Abstract:Nanotechnology emerged as a scientific innovation in the 21st century. Metallic nanoparticles (metal or metal oxide nanoparticles) have attained remarkable popularity due to their interesting biological, physical, chemical, magnetic, and optical properties. Metal-based nanoparticles can be prepared by utilizing different biological, physical, and chemical methods. The biological method is preferred as it provides a green, simple, facile, ecofriendly, rapid, and cost-effective route for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Plants have complex phytochemical constituents such as carbohydrates, amino acids, phenolics, flavonoids, terpenoids, and proteins, which can behave as reducing and stabilizing agents. However, the mechanism of green synthesis by using plants is still highly debatable. In this report, we summarized basic principles or mechanisms of green synthesis especially for metal or metal oxide (i.e., ZnO, Au, Ag, and TiO2, Fe, Fe2O3, Cu, CuO, Co) nanoparticles. Finally, we explored the medical applications of plant-based nanoparticles in terms of antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activity.

Nano-green: Harnessing the potential of plant extracts for sustainable antimicrobial metallic nanoparticles

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), one of the most serious worldwide public health concerns, poses a serious risk to the establishment of pathogenic organisms that are multidrug-resistant. In addition, the uncontrolled and unregulated use of antibiotics has resulted in the rapid development of antibiotic resistance in bacterial strains. However, this issue can be resolved through the development of appropriate nanoparticle-based antimicrobial therapies to treat infectious diseases. Several metal/metal oxide nanoparticles showed strong antibacterial activity against dangerous pathogens by interacting with DNA, enzymes, ribosomes, and lysosomes, which can affect gene expression, oxidative stress, and cell membrane permeability. Currently, the biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles using various plant extracts has attracted a great deal of attention towards antimicriobial nanotechnology. The article discusses the recent development of plant extract-mediated biosynthesized metal/metal oxide (Ag, Au, Pt, ZnO, CuO, TiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , Y 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles and their impacts, particularly for antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. The article also highlighted anti-microbial and oxidant mechanisms of metallic nanoparticles, including reactive oxygen species, antibiofilm formation inhibitors, dissolved metal ions, and efflux pump inhibitors, and their impacts on AMR. Abstract:Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) synthesized through biogenic methods have gained significant attention due to their unique properties and potential applications in various biological fields. Unlike chemical and physical approaches that may lead to environmental pollution, biogenic synthesis offers a greener alternative, minimizing hazardous environmental impacts. During biogenic synthesis, metabolites present in the biotic sources (like plants and microbes) serve as bio-reductants and bio-stabilizers. Among the biotic sources, microbes have emerged as a promising option for ZnO-NPs synthesis due to their numerous advantages, such as being environmentally friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible. Various microbes like bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, and yeast can be employed to synthesize ZnO-NPs. The synthesis can occur either intracellularly, within the microbial cells, or extracellularly, using proteins, enzymes, and other biomolecules secreted by the microbes. The main key advantage of biogenic synthesis is manipulating the reaction conditions to optimize the preferred shape and size of the ZnO-NPs. This control over the synthesis process allows tailoring the NPs for specific applications in various fields, including medicine, agriculture, environmental remediation, and more. Some potential applications include drug delivery systems, antibacterial agents, bioimaging, biosensors, and nano-fertilizers for improved crop growth. While the green synthesis of ZnO-NPs through microbes offers numerous benefits, it is essential to assess their toxicological effects, a critical aspect that requires thorough investigation to ensure their safe use in various applications. Overall, the presented review highlights the mechanism of biogenic synthesis of ZnO-NPs using microbes and their exploration of potential applications while emphasizing the importance of studying their toxicological effects to ensure a viable and environmentally friendly green strategy.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, the production of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) has developed into an exciting and sophisticated research area. Green metal oxide nanoparticles have played an extremely imperative role in various fields, including biomedical, environmental, energy, agricultural applications, catalytic, bioactive, antibacterial, poisonous, and biocompatible. To achieve sustainability and adopt environmentally friendly practices, the production of MONPs is now increasingly focused on exploring green chemistry and alternative pathways. When made using green synthesis techniques, the metal oxide nanoparticles are especially important because they do not require external stabilizers, capping agents, dangerous chemicals, or harsh operating conditions (high pressure and temperature). Plant-mediated synthesis of different MONPs using either whole cells or extracts has several advantages, including rapid synthesis (compared with other biogenic processes (using fungi and bacteria)), being more stable than other types, being available in nature, and being non-toxic. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the green synthesis of MONPs using plant parts, factors affecting the synthesis, and the characterization of synthesized NPs. Additionally, it highlights the potential of these environmentally friendly nanoparticles that are widely used to treat environmental pollutants, including the removal of heavy metals, antibacterials, and the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The development of smart green chemistry methods for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) has gained significant attention from researchers in the last few years. Due to the widespread usage of nanoscale metal ions in various industries such as health care, engineering, environmental protection, agriculture, etc., the synthesis of these materials is a timely subject and requirement. Currently, most of the nanoscale metals are produced chemically, which has unforeseen consequences such as energy and pollution, as well as health hazards. Numerous studies have been conducted to identify an eco-friendly method for producing the nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticle production using living things is one of the recent approaches that is most frequently discussed. The term “green synthesis of nanoparticles” describes the production of various metal nanoparticles using biologically active substances such as plant parts, microbes, and a variety of waste products like vegetable scraps, peels of fruits wastes, eggshell, farm wastes, and so on. Among these choices, plants seem to be the most ideal source for the potential creation of vast numbers of nanoparticles. Biomolecules present in plant extracts can be used to reduce metal ions into nanoparticles in a single-step green synthesis process, which is rapid, and are more stable. These newly synthesized nanoparticles are usually less expensive, easily available, produce less pollution, and enhance the safety of the environment and human. In the field of agriculture, the synthesis of nano-chemicals has the potential to improve fertilizers (slow-release nano fertilizers), pesticides (nano-pesticides), and nano plant growth regulators. Insects, fungi, bacteria, and weeds are among the plant pests that can be controlled with the use of nano-compounds lately.
