Abstract:This study proposes a novel combined cooling, dehumidification and power system based on internal combustion engine (ICE) for high temperature and humidity regions. In the proposed system, the electricity demand is mainly provided by ICE while the cooling and dehumidification demands are totally satisfied by absorption chiller (AC) and liquid desiccant dehumidification (LDD) units driven by waste heat of engine exhaust and jacket water. In addition, the electricity demand can be supplemented by battery and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) units driven by abundant waste heat of ICE. The aim of this system is designed to succeed the highly efficient utilization of ICE waste heat among AC, LDD and ORC units, and satisfy the multi-energy demands of users by optimizing the operation strategy. Firstly, a case study based on the actual power, cooling and dehumidification demands of a hotel building in Singapore is conducted to assess the performance of the proposed system. The parametric study of prominent design parameters in this system is investigated first to explore their effects on the system performance. Next, considering annual total cost and CO2 emissions as evaluation objectives, augmented ε-constraint method combined with improved Mutation particle swarm optimization (M-PSO) algorithm is used to conduct the multi-objective optimization of equipment capacity and operation. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of significant uncertainty factors is researched. The optimal results show that, compared to the traditional energy supply system, the annual carbon dioxide emission reduction ratio and total cost saving ratio can reach 35.91% and 25.46%, respectively.

Abstract:In this work, the performance of a combined cooling, heating, and power system is studied under dynamic operation conditions. The hybrid system consists of a wind farm and a subcooled compressed air energy storage system, providing energy for an integrated energy network including established heating, cooling, and electricity grids. For the presented system, real wind fluctuation data and the off-design performance characteristics of each component are considered. The efficiency of the integrated cooling, heating and power system and the cost of the system are taken into account as the objectives of the problem to optimize. Then, a bi-level differential evolution algorithm is proposed to handle the multi-objective optimization of the system. Different solutions are carried out and compared to investigate the trigeneration of the system under various energy demand conditions. The results show that the off-design characteristics have a significant side-effect on the trigeneration performance of the system. The storage system has more obvious advantages in the transition season, as the states of charge of the system are 82%, 84% and 92% in winter, summer and transition seasons, respectively. The application of the system can effectively avoid the negative effect of the off-design characteristics of equipment and has great potential for energy supply in combined cooling, heating, and power systems.

Abstract:The coupling of solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies with combined cooling, heating and power systems has significant impacts on the reduction of fossil fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. In this study, a mathematical model of a hybrid combined cooling, heating, and power system consisting of thermal storage units, batteries, microturbines, photovoltaic units, and solar thermal collectors, is developed. Meanwhile, based on the following thermal load strategy and following electric load strategy, the following the state of battery strategy is proposed. A multi-objective arithmetic optimization algorithm is proposed by using non-dominated sorting, mutation operations, and external archive mechanism to optimize the configuration of the hybrid system under different strategies. Besides, an optimal compromise is obtained by technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution method. A large hotel case is used to evaluate the performance of the hybrid system under different strategies. The optimization results show that the Pareto solutions obtained by the developed optimization algorithm are uniformly distributed. Moreover, compared with the hybrid system under the following electric load and following thermal load strategies, the hybrid system under the proposed strategy achieves better primary energy saving ratio, carbon dioxide emission reduction ratio, and energy efficiency, and these indicators reach 46.56%, 54.64%, and 78.51%, respectively.

Abstract:The hybridization between renewable energy and fossil energy in energy supply system is a feasible solution to reduce the fossil energy consumption and CO2 emission. The hybrid CCHP systems that can include gas turbine (GT), absorption unit (ABS), ground source heat pump (GSHP), photovoltaic panels (PV), solar thermal collectors (ST), photovoltaic thermal solar collectors (PVT), battery, water storage tank (WST), are proposed in this study. Two different systems to use solar energy are evaluated: in system A, solar energy is converted into thermal and electric energy by ST and PV, respectively; while in system B, solar energy is converted into thermal and electric energy by PVT. The NSGA-II algorithm is employed to search the Pareto frontier solutions of the multi-objective optimization model that considers economy, energy and environment performances. The TOPSIS method is used as decision making tool for ideal configuration selection. The hybrid CCHP systems for three buildings (hotel, office, market) are optimized and compared under different operation strategies. The results reveal that the system A operating in following electric load (FEL) strategy achieves more benefits for three buildings. Besides, the system configuration and component size are closely related to the building type.

Abstract:Technological advancements have improved solar energy generation and reduced the cost of installing photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, challenges such as low energy-conversion efficiency and the unpredictability of electricity generation due to shading or climate conditions persist. Despite decreasing costs, access to solar energy generation technologies remains limited. This paper proposes a multi-criteria decision support system (MCDSS) for selecting the most suitable PV set (comprising PV modules, inverters, and batteries) for microgrid installations. The MCDSS employs two multi-criteria decision-making methods (MCDM) for analysis and decision-making: AHP and TOPSIS. The system was tested in two case studies: Barreiras, with a global efficiency of 14.4% and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 56.0%, and Curitiba, with a worldwide efficiency of 14.8% and an IRR of 52.0%. The research provided a framework for assessing and selecting PV sets based on efficiency, cost, and return on investment. Methodologically, it integrates multiple MCDM techniques, demonstrating their applicability in renewable energy. Managerially, it offers a practical tool for decision-makers in the energy sector to enhance the feasibility and attractiveness of microgeneration projects. This research highlights the potential of MCDSS to improve the efficiency and accessibility of solar energy generation.

Abstract:The complementary of biomass and solar energy in combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system provides an efficient solution to address the energy crisis and environmental pollutants. This work aims to propose a multi-objective optimization model based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) method for the optimal design of hybrid solar and biomass system. The life-cycle process of the poly-generation system is divided into six phases to analyze energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The comprehensive performances of the hybrid system are optimized by incorporating the evaluation criteria, including environmental impact in the whole life cycle, renewable energy contribution and economic benefit. The nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) with the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method is employed to search the Pareto frontier result and thereby achieve optimal performance. The developed optimization methodology is used for a case study in an industrial park. The results indicate that the best performance from the optimized hybrid system is reached with the environmental impact load reduction rate (EILRR) of 46.03%, renewable energy contribution proportion (RECP) of 92.73% and annual total cost saving rate (ATCSR) of 35.75%, respectively. By comparing pollutant-eq emissions of different stages, the operation phase emits the largest pollutant followed by the phase of raw material acquisition. Overall, this study reveals that the proposed multi-objective optimization model integrated with LCA method delivers an alternative path for the design and optimization of more sustainable CCHP system.

Abstract:The major obstacle in designing of the wind turbine/photovoltaic/battery storage system lies in the task of choosing the most optimum solution while simultaneously considering techno-economic objectives. Consequently, this study provides a distinctive amalgamation of multi-objective multi-perspective and group multi-criteria decision-making methodologies to ascertain collections of Pareto optimum configurations and to weight, rank, and pick up the most desirable optimum solutions that represent best trade-off between conflicting objectives. In this paper, the multi-objective Dragon fly algorithm is developed based on mutation scheme and crossover tactic algorithm is advanced to handle a lack of diversity and poor convergence, while non-dominated sorting and crowding distance strategy is addressed to store the best found optimum solutions in the achieve. Loss of load probability, excess energy, and life cycle cost are conflicting techno-economic objectives solved by multi-objective method. The optimum Pareto front solutions are ranked based on hybrid multi-criteria decision-making method for determining the most favorable solution for the WT/PV/BS system. The experimental outcomes indicated that the developed approach has a distinct performance in constructing a collection of Pareto front solutions in terms of diversity, converge, and convergence. Moreover, it demonstrates outstanding results when compared to well-organized multi-objective optimization methods. The future direction can be accomplished by applying the proposed hybrid sizing methodology for solving gird-connected system along with electric vehicle based on techno-economic scenarios.

Abstract:Introducing thermal energy storage (TES) and solar energy effectively reduces fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems. This study establishes a two-layer optimization framework to obtain the optimal configuration of the CCHP system coupling solar and thermal energy storage. The outer layer uses component sizes as decision variables to optimize the system's annual economic economy, annual carbon dioxide emissions, and annual primary energy consumption; the inner layer uses equipment output as decision variables to optimize the operation and maintenance costs. Firstly, the representative typical scenes were obtained using the k-means algorithm to reduce the computational complexity. Then, the multi-objective chaos optimization (MOCGO) algorithm is combined with mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to obtain the established optimization model's configuration scheme and optimal operating strategy. TOPSIS is to rank the best Pareto solutions. Finally, a large hotel is a case study. The optimization results indicate that the proposed two-layer optimization model can achieve the optimal configuration scheme and scheduling strategy for hybrid CCHP. Compared to the rule-based multi-objective one-layer optimization model, the proposed two-layer optimization model can achieve maximum improvements of 30.63 %, 37.94 %, and 38.16 % in economic, energy, and environmental performance. Compared with the rule-based single-objective one-layer optimization model, the proposed two-layer optimization model can achieve maximum improvements of 34.95 %, 35.81 %, and 37.55 % in economic, energy, and environmental performance, respectively. In addition, TES can substantially increase the optimal performance of the two-layer optimization model.

Abstract:The integrated energy system (IES) is an efficient method for improving the utilization of renewable energy. This paper proposes an IES based on fuel, wind and solar energies, following an optimization study focused on determining optimal device capacities. The study included gas turbines, wind turbines, solar photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps, absorption chillers/heaters, batteries, and thermal storage. Objectives were incorporated into the optimization model for the overall performance of the IES; these included the primary energy saving rate, annual cost-saving rate, and carbon dioxide emission reduction. Then, the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II was employed to solve the optimization problem for multiple objectives. Ultimately, the verification and sensitivity analyses of the optimization method were achieved by a case study of hospital buildings in Harbin. The optimization results indicated a primary energy saving rate, annual cost saving rate, and carbon dioxide emission reduction rate of 17.3%, 39.8%, and 53.8%, respectively. The total installed capacity for renewable energy generation accounted for 64.5% of performance optimization. Moreover, the price of natural gas affected the economic indicators of the IES-but failed to impact energy consumption indicators.

Abstract:Population and economic growth, industrial activities, development of technology, and depletion of fossil fuels have all led to increasing energy demand. As a result, there is an increasing ambition towards implementation of sustainable energy sources. In this study, first, a review of the literature is conducted to learn about various methods and objectives for optimization of photovoltaic and thermal (PV/T) systems. Then, a case study is considered, and the seasonal and hourly solar radiation are studied. Further, two methods of multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) and multiobjective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) are compared. On this basis, the energy and exergy efficiencies are analyzed for a proposed PV/T system. The outcomes are validated by taking into account the previous studies, and a sufficient agreement is found indicating the validity and accuracy of the results. It is also found that the efficiency rates for both energy and exergy soar with a rise in the ambient temperature. Additionally, a growth in the warm water flow rate from 0.4 to 1 kg/s increases the exergy efficiency by 0.6%. It is concluded that the MOEA/D method outperforms the MOPSO in terms of the optimization of the proposed PV/T system.

Abstract:Achieving an optimal compromise between economic objectives and sustainability during the operation of an integrated Photovoltaic-Storage Charging Station (PS-CS) poses a common challenge. Traditional multi-objective optimization methods often fall short of effectively addressing nuanced trade-offs and incorporating decision-maker preferences. This paper introduces a novel two-stage optimization scheme to find the optimal compromise of energy management strategy by incorporating an adaptive parameter ( λ ) to represent decision-maker preferences. Concretely, the first stage employs a predictive global economic optimization algorithm to maximize the economic objective. In the second stage, an adaptive method, informed by the previous stage results, is employed to reconcile the sustainability objectives, thereby facilitating the identification of an optimal compromise. The optimization problems in each stage can be solved efficiently by commercial solvers in MATLAB making it suitable for real-time energy management. The efficiency of the proposed methodology is evaluated through an actual case. The outcomes substantiate the method's effectiveness in enhancing sustainability objectives by up to 7 % and 18 % while constraining profit reduction to within 3 %. Two comparisons with the conventional weighting approach highlight the proposed method's superior controllability in aligning with the decision-maker preferences and its enhanced robustness in various scenarios.

Abstract:This study compares the performance of the optimal installation of solar-assisted combined cooling, heating, and power system (CCHP) running different strategies using the energy consumption information of hospital buildings as input to the model. In addition, a novel multi-objective gradient-based optimizer is developed to obtain CCHP configuration schemes under different strategies. A multi-objective optimum configuration model of solar-assisted CCHP, including solar thermal collector, photovoltaic system , microturbine , gas boiler, heat storage device, and battery , is constructed. In addition, two other strategies are obtained by adapting the basic operation strategy while renewable energy with a fossil fuel-based energy supply system achieves a significant reduction in the gas consumption and emission of pollutants. The optimization results prove that compared with other strategies, the solar-assisted CCHP system operating the following electric load with electric cooling ratio (FEL-ECR) strategy has a better economy, environmental protection, and energy saving. The corresponding carbon dioxide emission reduction rate, primary energy saving rate, and annual total cost saving rate of the system running the FEL-ECR strategy reach 53.27 %, 39.01 %, and 33.88 %.

Abstract:Distributed energy systems are considered as a promising technology for sustainable development and have become a popular research topic in the areas of building energy systems. This work presents a case study of optimizing an integrated distributed energy system consisting of combined heat and power (CHP), photovoltaics (PV), and electric and/or thermal energy storage for a hospital and large hotel buildings located in Texas and California. First, simulation models for all subsystems, which are developed individually, are integrated together according to a control strategy designed to satisfy both the electric and thermal energy requirements of a building. Subsequently, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) is employed to obtain an optimal design of each subsystem. The objectives of the optimization are to minimize the simple payback period (PBP) and maximize the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions (RCDE). Finally, the energy performance for the selected building types and locations are analyzed after the optimization. Results indicate that the proposed optimization method could be applied to determine an optimal design of distributed energy systems, which reaches a trade-off between the economic and environmental performance for different buildings. With the presented distributed energy system, a peak shaving in electricity of about 300 kW and a reduction in boiler fuel consumption of 610 kW could be attained for the hospital building located in California for a winter day. For the summer and transition seasons, electricity peak shaving of 800 kW and 600 kW could be achieved, respectively.

Abstract:A novel multi-generation energy system is proposed consisting of a solar gas turbine system, multi-effect seawater desalination, LNG cold energy recovery unit, and a double effect absorption chiller. In addition, different working fluids of the ORC system are examined to select the suitable working fluid in terms of global warming potential and exergy efficiency of the system. Subsequently, energy, exergy, and economic (3E) analyses are performed to comprehensively evaluate the energy system. Besides, a parametric study is conducted to assess the effect of the most influential decision variables on the proposed system. Afterward, the novel multi-objective spiral optimization (MOSPO) algorithm is introduced to minimize total cost rate of the system while maximizing the exergy efficiency as the conflicting objective functions. The proposed algorithm is developed to optimize the decision variables effectively. To ascertain the final optimum solution point, three conventional methods i.e. TOPSIS, LINMAP and Shannon's entropy are implemented. The results revealed that exergy efficiency and total cost rate of the system at the baseline are 60.05%, and 36.75 $/h, respectively. Furthermore, the net power output of the system would be 106.5 kW in addition to 0.7703 kW heating load, 56.01 kW cooling capacity, and 35.74 kg/h fresh water production capacity. The eco-environmental assessment revealed the fact that the proposed renewable-based energy system is capable of avoiding 485 tons CO2 emissions annually, and product cost rate reduction up to 6 $/hr in comparison to coal and natural gas-based energy systems. Besides, the proposed MOSPO algorithm is compared with common optimization methods; accordingly, the conventional algorithms are selected for the comparison including non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), the multiple objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm, the Pareto envelope-based selection algorithm II (PESA-II), and the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm II (SPEA-II). The comparison results show that the proposed MOSPO algorithm is preferable according to the Taylor Diagrams showing the performance of the algorithms.

Abstract:Deployment of distributed building photovoltaic (PV) applications creates a complicated decision-making process to balance conflicting objectives with various constraints. As an important social component, visual impact is introduced into a multi-objective optimization framework together with performance-cost and spatial compactness as three objectives for the planning of distributed PV systems. The proposed framework is applied to a study case, located in Xi'an city, China, to present the main technical process for PV deployments on 4618 building surfaces. Considering the spatial heterogeneity of solar irradiation and visibility, optimal plans were achieved and representative solutions were discussed and visualized in a 3D environment. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed approach was verified in comparison with two heuristic planning methods. The multi-objective optimization framework provides an energy planning approach for distributed building PV deployments, enabling planners to make informed decisions that balance competing priorities among performance-cost, visual impact, and compactness.

Abstract:For energy conservation and CO2 emission reduction, renewable energy facilities, such as solar equipments and rooftop gardens, are considered effective for energy management of institutional buildings in a community. This study integrated an energy mixture facility model with a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II optimizer as a multiobjective optimal facility allocation model (MOFAM) for allocating renewable energy facilities on the rooftop of campus buildings.A case study was conducted on a college campus to demonstrate the feasibility of MOFAM. MOFAM offers simple steps and provides more allocation plans to satisfy decision-makers’ requirements for minimum investment cost, maximum CO2 reduction, and maximum investment returns. In addition, the result demonstrates that the multiobjective optimal model considering three objectives resulted in optimal solutions that include the optimal solutions generated from two-objective optimization. In this campus case, MOFAM helped decision-makers optimize the installation area of solar photovoltaic panels, the installation area of solar water heaters, and the area of rooftop gardens on campus rooftops to perform effective management for institutional buildings for conserving energy and CO2 reduction.

Abstract:This study demonstrates how to use grid-connected hybrid PV and biogas energy with a SMES-PHES storage system in a nation with frequent grid outages. The primary goal of this work is to enhance the HRES’s capacity to favorably influence the HRES’s economic viability, reliability, and environmental impact. The net present cost (NPC), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the likelihood of a power outage are among the variables that are examined. A mixed solution involves using a variety of methodologies to compromise aspects of the economy, reliability, and the environment. Metaheuristic optimization techniques such as non-dominated sorting whale optimization algorithm (NSWOA), multi-objective grey wolf optimization (MOGWO), and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) are used to find the best size for hybrid systems based on evaluation parameters for financial stability, reliability, and GHG emissions and have been evaluated using MATLAB. A thorough comparison between NSWOA, MOGWO, and MOPSO and the system parameters at 150 iterations has been presented. The outcomes demonstrated NSWOA’s superiority in achieving the best optimum value of the predefined multi-objective function, with MOGWO and MOPSO coming in second and third, respectively. The comparison study has focused on NSWOA’s ability to produce the best NPC, LPSP, and GHG emissions values, which are EUR 6.997 × 106, 0.0085, and 7.3679 × 106 Kg reduced, respectively. Additionally, the simulation results demonstrated that the NSWOA technique outperforms other optimization techniques in its ability to solve the optimization problem. Furthermore, the outcomes show that the designed system has acceptable NPC, LPSP, and GHG emissions values under various operating conditions.

Abstract:Integrated energy system (IES) plays a vital role in achieving energy revolution and the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. The optimal planning of IES is of great significance for improving the overall efficiency of the system and promoting its sustainable development. Focusing on this issue, this paper proposes a planning framework integrating multi-objective optimization with fuzzy multi-criteria decision making (MCDM). In this framework, IES planning is modeled as a multi-objective optimization problem that, for the first time, simultaneously minimizes energy consumption, carbon emissions, and economic costs. Thereafter, the optimization problem is solved by a multi-objective state transition algorithm based on decomposition (MOSTA/D), which generates a Pareto set that realizes multiple conflicting objective tradeoffs. Furthermore, to comprehensively evaluate the Pareto optimal solutions, an evaluation criteria system is established from various perspectives, and a novel MCDM approach is proposed. This approach combines the analytic network process-entropy weighting technique, which takes into account the correlation between criteria as well as subjective preference and objective information, with fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) for scientifically ranking and selecting solutions under uncertainty. The simulation results of an IES planning case study demonstrate that the optimal scheme determined by the proposed method achieves the best overall benefit for IES, with significant annual economic cost savings, primary energy savings, and carbon dioxide emission reduction rates of 2.27%, 40.36%, and 56.25%, respectively, proving the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:This study focuses on multi-objective optimization of multi-energy heating systems. By evaluating the heating load of the project, a mathematical model combining solar energy, natural gas, and air-energy is established to determine the comprehensive index that includes economic, environmental, and energy indicators. The heating load and the ratio of energy to temperature control are analyzed to optimize the design and operation of the project. Three types of algorithms are evaluated to solve the proposed model, and the chemical reaction optimization algorithm is chosen because of its stability and efficiency. The multi-energy heating systems is optimized via transient simulation using TRNSYS, and the energy consumption of the optimized system is 2.57% less than that of a conventional system. Moreover, the economic cost and CO2 emissions of the optimized system are reduced by 13.94% and 20.67%, respectively, compared with those of the conventional system.
