Abstract:We propose a simple approach to investigate the structural relaxation time and glass transition of amorphous drugs. Amorphous materials are modeled as a set of equal sized hard spheres. The structural relaxation time over many decades in hard sphere fluids is theoretically calculated using the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation theory associated with Kramer's theory. Then, a new thermal mapping from a real material to an effective hard sphere fluid provides temperature-dependent relaxation time, which can compare to experiments. Numerical results quantitatively agree with previous experiments for pharmaceutical binary mixtures having different weight ratios. We carry out experiments to test our calculations for an ezetimibe-simvastatin-Kollidon VA64 mixture. Our approach would provide a simple but comprehensive description of glassy dynamics in amorphous composites.

Abstract:The time-dependent behavior of glass transition can be exploited to achieve shape-memory behavior in amorphous polymers. Modeling the shape-memory effect in polymers requires considering the viscoelastic behavior, structural evolution in response to external stimuli, such as temperature, stress, solvent. Furthermore, the broad spectrum of stress and structural relaxation times are needed to accurately predict the rate-dependent recovery response. In this paper, we review our efforts to develop constitutive models for the glass transition behavior of amorphous polymers to predict the shape-memory behavior under a variety of thermomechanical conditions.

Abstract:We present a constitutive model for the effect of solvent absorption on the thermomechanical properties and shape-memory behavior of amorphous polymers. The absorption of low concentrations of solvent depresses the glass transition temperature by increasing the molecular mobility of the polymer chains. In a shape-memory application, this can lead to premature shape recovery and significant alterations to the time-dependence and temperature-dependence of shape recovery. We implemented the constitutive model for finite element analysis and developed a computational model that considered the time-dependent effect of diffusion to study the solvent-induced shape-memory behavior of a meth(acrylate) copolymer network. The model was validated by comparing to isothermal shape recovery experiments of specimens in air and water at different temperatures.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanical responses of glassy polymers remains a grand scientific challenge for many decades, which plays a central role in the application of these materials. In this work, we have performed stress relaxation tests on a series of glassy polymers. An abnormal rate-dependent stress relaxation response is revealed, featuring as a larger stress drop and smaller quasi-steady-state stress with increasing the initial loading rate. To explore the underlying deformation mechanism, we further carry out a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation on glassy polymers, which qualitatively demonstrates the experimental observations. The underlying physical mechanism is revealed to be that a larger initial loading rate can lead to a more-activated structure state of polymers. Based on these findings, we develop a physically-based model by introducing the effective temperature model into the shear transformation zone (STZ) theory. The effective temperature, as an internal variable, can describe the deformation-induced structural evolution of amorphous polymers. The Adam–Gibbs model is then adopted to relate the effective temperature with the transformation rates of STZ sites. Comparison with experimental results shows that the micro-mechanical model can capture the rate-dependent stress–strain relationship in the loading process as well as the abnormal stress relaxation responses. In comparison, it is challenging to rationalize this abnormal behavior based on classic viscoplastic models due to a lack of physical mechanisms. Thus, this work promotes our understanding of the origin of complex mechanical responses of glassy polymers that are strongly related to the evolution of microstructure upon deformation.
A Thermodynamic Modeling Approach for Dynamic Softening in Glassy Amorphous Polymers

Abstract:Strain softening is highly dependent on the thermo-mechanical history. The degree of post-yield strain softening increases with the aging time, which is dependent on the aging temperature, and decreases with plastic strain. In this paper, we present two approaches to describe the strain softening. The first approach is an extension of the widely applied dynamic softening method that evolves the yield strength with the effective plastic strain rate. Though this approach can quantitatively capture the main experimental observations, it is empirical and does not capture the physical mechanism behind aging and strain softening. The second approach couples inelastic deformation with an evolution of the nonequilibrium state. The approach is based on the effective temperature nonequilibrium thermodynamic framework that introduces a thermodynamic state variable, the effective temperature to characterize the nonequilibrium state. The temperature-dependent evolution of the effective temperature describes the glass transition of amorphous polymers. We show that the physical aging and dynamic softening arise from the evolution of the effective temperature towards equilibrium and with plastic deformation towards a steady-state value away from equilibrium.

Abstract:In this paper, a thermomechanical constitutive model was developed for the time-dependent behaviors of the glass transition of amorphous networks. The model used multiple discrete relaxation processes to describe the distribution of relaxation times for stress relaxation, structural relaxation, and stress-activated viscous flow. A non-equilibrium thermodynamic framework based on the fictive temperature was introduced to demonstrate the thermodynamic consistency of the constitutive theory. Experimental and theoretical methods were developed to determine the parameters describing the distribution of stress and structural relaxation times and the dependence of the relaxation times on temperature, structure, and driving stress. The model was applied to study the effects of deformation temperatures and physical aging on the shape-memory behavior of amorphous networks. The model was able to reproduce important features of the partially constrained recovery response observed in experiments. Specifically, the model demonstrated a strain-recovery overshoot for cases programmed below Tg and subjected to a constant mechanical load. This phenomenon was not observed for materials programmed above Tg. Physical aging, in which the material was annealed for an extended period of time below Tg, shifted the activation of strain recovery to higher temperatures and increased significantly the initial recovery rate. For fixed-strain recovery, the model showed a larger overshoot in the stress response for cases programmed below Tg, which was consistent with previous experimental observations. Altogether, this work demonstrates how an understanding of the time-dependent behaviors of the glass transition can be used to tailor the temperature and deformation history of the shape-memory programming process to achieve more complex shape recovery pathways, faster recovery responses, and larger activation stresses.
A Finite Deformation Fractional Viscoplastic Model for the Glass Transition Behavior of Amorphous Polymers

Abstract:The stress response of amorphous polymers exhibits tremendous change during the glass transition region, from soft viscoelastic response to stiff viscoplastic response. In order to describe the temperature-dependent and rate dependent stress response of amorphous polymers, we extend the one-dimensional small strain fractional Zener model to the three-dimensional finite deformation model. The Eyring model is adopted to represent the stress activated viscous flow. A phenomenological evolution equation of yield strength is used to describe the strain softening behaviors. We demonstrate that the stress response predicted by the three-dimensional model is consistent with that of one-dimensional model under uniaxial deformation, which confirms the validity of the extension. The model is then applied to describe the stress response of an amorphous thermoset at various temperatures and strain rates, which shows good agreement between experiments and simulation. We further perform a parameter study to investigate the influence of the model parameters on the stress response. The results show that a smaller fractional order results in a larger yield strain while has little effect on the yield stress when the temperature is below the glass transition temperature. For the stress relaxation tests, a smaller fractional order leads to a slower relaxation rate.
An Effective Temperature Theory for the Nonequilibrium Behavior of Amorphous Polymers

Abstract:Amorphous polymers lack an organized microstructure, yet they exhibit structural evolution, where physical properties change with time, temperature, and inelastic deformation. To describe the influence of structural evolution on the mechanical behavior of amorphous polymers, we developed a thermomechanical theory that introduces the effective temperature as a thermodynamic state variable representing the nonequilibrium configurational structure. The theory couples the evolution of the effective temperature and internal state variables to describe the temperature-dependent and rate-dependent inelastic response through the glass transition. We applied the theory to model the effect of temperature, strain rate, aging time, and plastic pre-deformation on the uniaxial compression response and enthalpy change with temperature of an acrylate network. The results showed excellent agreement with experiments and demonstrate the ability of the effective temperature theory to explain the complex thermomechanical behavior of amorphous polymers.

Abstract:Understanding the structural relaxation plays an essential role in the application of amorphous solids. Most of the current models use the fictive temperature concept to describe structural relaxation. The fictive temperature is assumed to evolve with temperature through the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watt (KWW) function. In this work, we use the Mittag-Leffler (ML) function to replace the KWW function. We will demonstrate the similarity and difference of the two models. Both the continuous model in the integral form and the discrete model with multiple relaxation processes in differential form are presented. We provide a numerical algorithm to obtain the relaxation spectra of the discrete models. It is shown that the spectrum of the model with the KWW kernel is asymmetric while the spectrum of the model with the ML kernel is symmetric. We further demonstrate that the continuous model and the discrete model are numerically equivalent. The performances of the models with the KWW kernel and the ML kernel are compared in details. It is showed that both models can capture the same trend on the effects of the cooling rate and annealing time on the enthalpy response. However, the magnitude and location of the enthalpy overshoot predicted by the two models are different. Thus, this work provides another choice for the relaxation function.
Unified physical framework for stretched-exponential, compressed-exponential, and logarithmic relaxation phenomena in glassy polymers

Abstract:We develop a simple yet comprehensive nonlinear model to describe relaxation phenomena in amorphous glass-formers near the glass transition temperature. The model is based on the two-state, two-(time)scale (TS2) framework, and describes the isothermal relaxation of specific volume, enthalpy, or shear stress via a simple first-order nonlinear differential equation (the Trachenko-Zaccone [TZ] equation) for local cooperative events. These nonlinear dynamics of cooperatively rearranging regions (CRR) naturally arise from the TS2 framework. We demonstrate that the solutions of the TZ equation comprehensively encompass the Debye exponential relaxation, the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) stretched and compressed relaxations, and the Guiu-Pratt logarithmic relaxation. Furthermore, for the case of stress relaxation modeling, our model recovers, as one of its limits, the Eyring law for plastic flow, where the Eyring activation volume is related to thermodynamic parameters of the material. Using the example of polystyrene (PS), we demonstrate how our model successfully describes the Kovacs "asymmetry of approach" specific volume and enthalpy experiments, as well as the stress relaxation. Other potential applications of the model, including the dielectric relaxation, are also discussed. The presented approach disentangles the physical origins of different relaxation laws within a single general framework based on the underlying physics.

Abstract:Compression effects on alpha and beta relaxation process of amorphous drugs are theoretically investigated by developing the elastically collective nonlinear Langevin equation theory. We describe the structural relaxation as a coupling between local and nonlocal activated process. Meanwhile, the secondary beta process is mainly governed by the nearest-neighbor interactions of a molecule. This assumption implies the beta relaxation acts as a precursor of the alpha relaxation. When external pressure is applied, a small displacement of a molecule is additionally exerted by a pressure-induced mechanical work in the dynamic free energy, which quantifies interactions between a molecule with its nearest neighbors. The local dynamics has more restriction and it induces stronger effects of collective motions on single-molecule dynamics. Thus, the alpha and beta relaxation times are significantly slowed down with increasing compression. We apply this approach to determine the temperature and pressure dependence of the alpha and beta relaxation time for curcumin, glibenclamide, and indomethacin, and compare numerical results with prior experimental studies. Both qualitative and quantitative agreement between theoretical calculations and experiments validate our assumptions and reveal their limitations. Our approach would pave the way for the development of the drug formulation process.

Theoretical and Experimental Study of Compression Effects on Structural Relaxation of Glass-Forming Liquids

Abstract:We develop the elastically collective nonlinear Langevin equation theory of bulk relaxation of glass-forming liquids to investigate molecular mobility under compression conditions. The applied pressure restricts more molecular motion and therefore significantly slows-down the molecular dynamics when increasing the pressure. We quantitatively determine the temperature and pressure dependence of the structural relaxation time. To validate our model, dielectric spectroscopy experiments for three rigid and non-polymeric supramolecules are carried out at ambient and elevated pressures. The numerical results quantitatively agree with experimental data.

Structural relaxation in amorphous materials under cyclic tension-compression loading

Abstract:The process of structural relaxation in disordered solids subjected to repeated tension-compression loading is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The binary glass is prepared by rapid cooling well below the glass transition temperature and then periodically strained at constant volume. We find that the amorphous system is relocated to progressively lower potential energy states during hundreds of cycles, and the energy levels become deeper upon approaching critical strain amplitude from below. The decrease in potential energy is associated with collective nonaffine rearrangements of atoms, and their rescaled probability distribution becomes independent of the cycle number at sufficiently large time intervals. It is also shown that yielding during startup shear deformation occurs at larger values of the stress overshoot in samples that were cyclically loaded at higher strain amplitudes. These results might be useful for mechanical processing of amorphous alloys in order to reduce their energy and increase chemical resistivity and resistance to crystallization.

Abstract:A new approach is theoretically proposed to study the glass transition of active pharmaceutical ingredients and a glass-forming anisotropic molecular liquid at high pressures. We describe amorphous materials as a fluid of hard spheres. Effects of nearest-neighbor interactions and cooperative motions of particles on glassy dynamics are quantified through a local and collective elastic barrier calculated using the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation theory. Inserting two barriers into Kramer's theory gives structural relaxation time. Then, we formulate a new mapping based on the thermal expansion process under pressure to intercorrelate particle density, temperature, and pressure. This analysis allows us to determine the pressure and temperature dependence of alpha relaxation. From this, we estimate an effective elastic modulus of amorphous materials and capture effects of conformation on the relaxation process. Remarkably, our theoretical results agree well with experiments.
Characterization of the Time Scales of Molecular Motion in Pharmaceutically Important Glasses

Abstract:Increased interest in molecular time scares below the glass transition temperature, T(g), has arisen from the desire to identify the conditions (e.g., temperature) where the molecular processes which lead to unwanted changes in amorphous systems (e.g., chemical reactivity, crystallization, structural collapse) are improbable. The purpose of this study was to characterize the molecular mobility of selected amorphous systems (i.e., indomethacin, sorbitol, sucrose, and trehalose) below T(g) using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Of particular interest was the temperature where the time scales for molecular motion (i.e., relaxation time) exceed expected lifetimes or storage times. As a first approximation of this temperature, the temperature where the thermodynamic properties of the crystal and the equilibrium supercooled liquid converge (i.e., the Kauzmann temperature, T(K)) was determined. T(K) values derived from heat capacity and enthalpy of fusion data ranged from 40 to 190 K below the calorimetric T(g). A more refined approach, using a form of the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equation derived from the Adam-Gibbs formulation for nonequilibrium systems below T(g), was used to predict the temperatures where the relaxation times of real glasses exceed practical storage times. Relaxation times in glasses were characterized in terms of their fictive temperature, as determined from heat capacity data measured using modulated differential scanning calorimetry. The calculated relaxation times were in good agreement with measured relaxation times for at least two materials. Relaxation times in real glasses were on the order of three years at temperatures near T(K), indicating low (but not zero) mobility under conditions where the equilibrium supercooled liquid experiences total loss of structural mobility. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of excess configurational entropy formed during vitrification in determining structural relaxation dynamics in real glasses.

Abstract:From optical fiber to high-tech displays, glass relaxation plays a critical role. Due to the non-equilibrium nature of glass, there is a constant evolution associated with relaxation that influences manufacturing and properties. Despite the importance of glass relaxation, it remains a challenge to understand and predict. Models to predict the behavior of glass relaxation have been proposed for more than 80 years and have become increasingly more accurate at the cost of simplicity. These models have also been influenced by the models that have come before them. In this article, we review the history of glass relaxation models and how they connect to modern computational approaches and discuss the remaining challenges of glass relaxation modeling.

Abstract:Structural relaxation and physical aging in glassy polymer films have attracted much attention in the past two decades due to their strong correlation with the lifetime of polymer-based nano-devices. Currently, the observed physical aging in polymer films was explained on the basis of a free volume diffusion model (FVDM) that has not yet been validated by simulations at the molecular level. Here we performed a Monte Carlo simulation by introducing the vacancy diffusion mechanism (similar to FVDM) to investigate the structural relaxation in ultrathin polymer films. The results show that the local average density of segments increases linearly with the logarithm of time, similar to the fluorescence intensity and dielectric strength measurements in experiments. The responses of relaxation rates in ultrathin films to temperatures are consistent with that for glassy polymer thin films in experiments. The emergence of a peak of relaxation rates with decreasing temperature can be attributed to the competition of two mechanisms (segment mobility and accurate initial vacancy concentration) from the molecular levels. Our results demonstrate that the simulations with a vacancy diffusion model could indeed provide new insights from the molecular levels to understand the structural relaxation and physical aging in ultrathin polymer films.
Temperature dependence of fast relaxation processes in amorphous materials

Abstract:We examine the structural relaxation of glassy materials at finite temperatures, considering the effect of activated rearrangements and long-range elastic interactions. Our three-dimensional mesoscopic relaxation model shows how the displacements induced by localized relaxation events can result in faster-than-exponential relaxation. Thermal activation allows for local rearrangements, which generate elastic responses and possibly cascades of new relaxation events. To study the interplay between this elastically-dominated and thermally-dominated dynamics, we introduce tracer particles that follow the displacement field induced by the local relaxation events and also incorporate Brownian motion. Our results reveal that the dynamic exponents and shape parameter of the dynamical structure factor depend on this competition and display a crossover from faster-than-exponential to exponential relaxation as temperature increases, consistent with recent observations in metallic glasses. Additionally, we find the distribution of waiting times between activations to be broadly distributed at low temperatures, providing a measure of dynamical heterogeneities characteristic for to glassy dynamics.

Abstract:The "classical" thermodynamic and statistical mechanical theories of Gibbs and Boltzmann are both predicated on axiomatic assumptions whose applicability is hard to ascertain. Theoretical objections and an increasing number of observed deviations from these theories have led to sustained efforts to develop an improved mathematical and physical foundation for them, and the search for appropriate extensions that are generally applicable to condensed materials at low temperatures ( T ) and high material densities where the assumptions of these theories start to become particularly questionable. These theoretical efforts have largely focused on minimal models of condensed material systems, such as the Fermi–Ulam–Pasta–Tsingou model, and other simplified models of condensed materials that are amenable to numerical and analytic treatments and that can serve to illuminate essential features of relaxation processes in condensed materials under conditions approaching integrable dynamics where clear departures from classical thermodynamics and dynamics can be generally expected. These studies indicate an apparently general multi-step relaxation process, corresponding to an initial "fast" relaxation process (termed the fast β-relaxation in the context of cooled liquids), followed by a longer "equipartition time", namely, the α-relaxation time τ α in the context of cooled liquids. This relaxation timescale can be enormously longer than the fast β-relaxation time τ β so that τ α is the primary parameter governing the rate at which the material comes into equilibrium, and thus is a natural focus of theoretical attention. Since the dynamics of these simplified dynamical systems, originally intended as simplified models of real crystalline materials exhibiting anharmonic interactions, greatly resemble the observed relaxation dynamics of both heated crystals and cooled liquids, we adapt this dynamical system approach to the practical matter of estimating relaxation times in both cooled liquids and crystals at elevated temperatures, which we identify as weakly non-integrable dynamical systems.
