Abstract:In order to develop an effective and economical method for removing low concentration radioactive wastewater of uranium, the biomass of 'CMCC(F)-98003' Aspergillus niger was investigated in a batch system. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 12.5 mg g-1 was obtained at the initial uranium concentration of 0.75 mg L-1. The biosorption data on a biomass concentration of 0.029 g L-1 fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.987. The calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that the biosorption of uranium ions was endothermic (ΔH° < 0). The results of scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry analysis revealed that nano-particles of uranium precipitation were formed on the cell surfaces after biosorption, and the functional groups of -CH, N-H, -COOH, P = O and the carbohydrates and alcohols were involved in the biosorption process between A. niger and uranium ions.
MOF‐Confined Sub‐2 Nm Atomically Ordered Intermetallic PdZn Nanoparticles As High‐Performance Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of ultrasmall atomically ordered intermetallic nanoparticles is a challenging task, owing to the high temperature commonly required for the formation of intermetallic phases. Here, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-confined co-reduction strategy is developed for the preparation of sub-2 nm intermetallic PdZn nanoparticles, by employing the well-defined porous structures of calcinated ZIF-8 (ZIF-8C) and an in situ co-reduction therein. HAADF-STEM, HRTEM, and EDS characterizations reveal the homogeneous dispersion of these sub-2 nm intermetallic PdZn nanoparticles within the ZIF-8C frameworks. XRD, XPS, and EXAFS measurements further confirm the atomically ordered intermetallic phase nature of these sub-2 nm PdZn nanoparticles. Selective hydrogenation of acetylene evaluation results show the excellent catalytic properties of the sub-2 nm intermetallic PdZn, which result from the energetically more favorable path for acetylene hydrogenation and ethylene desorption over the ultrasmall particles than over larger-sized intermetallic PdZn as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, this protocol is also extendable for the preparation of sub-2 nm intermetallic PtZn nanoparticles and is expected to provide a novel methodology in synthesizing ultrasmall atomically ordered intermetallic nanomaterials by rationally functionalizing MOFs.

Abstract:Pt3Zn1 and Pt1Zn1 intermetallic nanoparticles supported on SiO2 were synthesized by combining atomic layer deposition (ALD) of ZnO, incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) of Pt, and appropriate hydrogen reduction. The formation of Pt1Zn1 and Pt3Zn1 intermetallic nanoparticles was observed by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). STEM images showed that the 2-3 nm Pt-based intermetallic nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on a SiO2 support. The relationships between Pt-Zn intermetallic phases and synthesis conditions were established. In situ XAS measurements at Pt L3 and Zn K edges during hydrogen reduction provided a detailed image of surface species evolution. Owing to a combined electronic and geometric effect, Pt1Zn1 exhibited much higher reactivity and stability than Pt3Zn1 and Pt in both the direct dehydrogenation and oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene reactions.

Abstract:Ordered M1Zn1 intermetallic phases with structurally isolated atom sites offer unique electronic and geometric structures for catalytic applications, but lack reliable industrial synthesis methods that avoid forming a disordered alloy with ill-defined composition. We developed a facile strategy for preparing well-defined M1Zn1 intermetallic nanoparticles (i-NPs) catalysts from physical mixtures of monometallic M/SiO2 (M = Rh, Pd, Pt) and ZnO. The Rh1Zn1 i-NPs with structurally isolated Rh atom sites had a high intrinsic selectivity to ethylene (91%) with extremely low C4 and oligomer formation, which outperform the reported intermetallic and alloy catalysts in acetylene semihydrogenation. Further studies revealed that the M1Zn1 phases were formed in situ in a reducing atmosphere at 400 oC by a Zn atom emitting-trapping-ordering (Zn-ETO) mechanism, which ensures the high phase-purity of i-NP. This study provides a scalable and practical solution for further exploration of Zn-based intermetallic phases and a new strategy for designing Zn-containing catalysts.

Abstract:Pt-based multimetallic core-shell nanoplates have received great attention as advanced catalysts, but the synthesis is still challenging. Here we report the synthesis of multimetallic Pd@PtM (M = Ni, Rh, Ru) nanoplates including Pd@Pt nanoplates, in which Pt or Pt alloy shells with controlled thickness epitaxially grow on plate-like Pd seeds. The key to achieve high-quality Pt-based multimetallic nanoplates is in situ generation of CO through interfacial catalytic reactions associated with Pd nanoplates and benzyl alcohol. In addition, the accurate control in a trace amount of CO is also of great importance for conformal growth of multimetallic core-shell nanoplates. The Pd@PtNi nanoplates exhibit substantially improved activity and stability for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) compared to the Pd@Pt nanoplates and commercial Pt catalysts due to the advantages arising from plate-like, core-shell, and alloy structures.
Surface Hexagonal Pt1Sn1 Intermetallic on Pt Nanoparticles for Selective Propane Dehydrogenation.

Abstract:A series of 2-3 nm Pt-Sn bimetallic nanoparticles with different Pt-Sn coordination numbers were synthesized by a stepwise approach including electrostatic adsorption and temperature-programmed reduction of metal precursors on the SiO2 support. In situ synchrotron XRD and XAFS demonstrated a highly ordered hexagonal Pt1Sn1 intermetallic shell on Pt nanoparticles. The turnover rates (TORs), propylene selectivity and stability of these bimetallic catalysts significantly surpass those of the monometallic Pt catalyst for propane dehydrogenation. At the same time, TORs increase with increasing Pt-Sn coordination number, whereas propylene selectivity is not significantly influenced by the Pt-Sn coordination number. Combined with experiments and theoretical calculations, the high propylene selectivity of the Pt-Sn bimetallic nanoparticles is attributed to the geometric effects of Sn that reduce the Pt ensembles, and the high TORs are due to the electronic effects that weaken Pt-hydrocarbon chemisorption energies.

Abstract:Similar to heterostructures composed of different materials, possessing unique properties due to the synergistic effect between different components, the crystal-phase heterostructures, one variety of hetero-phase structures, composed of different crystal phases in monometallic nanomaterials are herein developed, in order to explore crystal-phase-based applications. As novel hetero-phase structures, amorphous/crystalline heterostructures are highly desired, since they often exhibit unique properties, and hold promise in various applications, but these structures have rarely been studied in noble metals. Herein, via a one-pot wet-chemical method, a series of amorphous/crystalline hetero-phase Pd nanosheets is synthesized with different crystallinities for the catalytic 4-nitrostyrene hydrogenation. The chemoselectivity and activity can be fine-tuned by controlling the crystallinity of the as-synthesized Pd nanosheets. This work might pave the way to preparing various hetero-phase nanostructures for promising applications.

Abstract:Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was employed to synthesize supported Pt-Pd bimetallic particles in the 1 to 2 nm range. The metal loading and composition of the supported Pt-Pd nanoparticles were controlled by varying the deposition temperature and by applying ALD metal oxide coatings to modify the support surface chemistry. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy images showed monodispersed Pt-Pd nanopartides on ALD Al2O3- and TiO2-modified SiO2 gel. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the bimetallic nanoparticles have a stable Pt-core, Pd-shell nanostructure. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the most stable surface configuration for the Pt Pd alloys in an H-2 environment has a Pt-core, Pd-shell nanostructure. In comparison to their monometallic counterparts, the small Pt-Pd bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles exhibited higher activity in propane oxidative dehydrogenation as compared to their physical mixture.
Bimetallic clusters confined inside silicalite-1 for stable propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:The noble metal-based bimetallic clusters with high atom utilization and surface energy have been widely applied in heterogeneous catalysis, but the stabilization of these metastable clusters in harsh reaction conditions is quite challenging. Herein, we synthesize a series of Pt-, Pd-, and Ru-based clusters promoted by a second non-noble metal (Zn, Cu, Sn, and Fe), which are confined inside silicalite-1 (pure silica, S-1) crystals by a ligand-protected method. The second metal could well stabilize and disperse the noble atoms inside the rigid S-1 zeolites via Si-O-M bonds, thus enabling to lower the usage of expensive noble metals in catalysts. The as-synthesized bimetallic catalysts exhibited excellent performance in non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction, which is typically operated above 500 °C. The PtZn@S-1, PtCu@S-1, and PtSn@S-1 with only a ∼ 0.17 wt.% Pt loading offer a significant enhancement in PDH performance compared with the conventional PtSn/Al 2 O 3 catalyst with a 0.5 wt.% Pt loading prepared by impregnation method. Notably, the PtSn@S-1 provides a propane conversion of 45% with a 99% propylene selectivity at 550 °C, close to the thermodynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, the PtSn@S-1 exhibits excellent stability during 300 h on stream and high tolerance to regeneration by a simple calcination step.

Formation Combined with Intercalation of Ni and Its Alloy Nanoparticles within Mesoporous Silica for Robust Catalytic Reactions

Abstract:Intercalation of silica-supported nickel nanoparticles within mesoporous silica has been achieved through chemical reduction of nickel silicate with mesoporous silica ( mSiO2) coated on inner and outer surfaces. Formation of nickel nanoparticles was controlled at nickel silicate-silica interface and was well-confined by mSiO2 coating. Doping of other transition metals has been accomplished at the stage of nickel silicate formation, because of similarity in critical stability constants of respective metal salts. Doped nickel silicates were able to produce nickel-based bimetallic and trimetallic alloy nanoparticles within the final dual-shell configuration. This type of catalyst has been tested for both liquid- and gas-phase reactions, all showing good activity and selectivity. Ni nanoparticles could serve as the active catalyst or activity enhancer to other alloyed metals for different reactions. Especially for selective hydrogenation of trans-cinnamaldehyde, 100% selectivity toward hydrocinnamaldehyde at full conversion has been achieved without using noble metals. Spent catalysts in all cases showed no changes in terms of morphology and crystal structure, indicating this type of catalyst was robust under such reaction conditions, including gas-solid reaction systems.

Abstract:Modulation of geometric and electronic structures of supported Pd-based catalysts by forming atomically ordered intermetallic phases enables an effective way to optimize catalytic performance. However, the synthesis of small-sized Pd-based intermetallic nanoparticle catalysts with improved mass-based activity remains formidable challenges, since high-temperature annealing generally required for atom ordering inevitably leads to severe metal sintering and thus large crystallites. Here, we present a bulky nanodiamond-confined method to prepare sub-5 nm Pd3Pb intermetallic nanocatalysts by mitigating metal sintering at high temperatures, which is induced by the electronic interactions between metal and defect-rich graphene shells reinforced by diamond cores in the bulky nanodiamond support. The prepared small-sized Pd3Pb intermetallic catalyst displays a high activity with a turnover frequency of 932 h−1 for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene under mild conditions (room temperature, 3 bar H2), along with a high selectivity of > 96% to styrene near the complete conversion of phenylacetylene.

Abstract:Single noble metal atoms and ultrafine metal clusters catalysts tend to sinter into aggregated particles at elevated temperatures, driven by the decrease of metal surface free energy. Herein, we report an unexpected phenomenon that noble metal nanoparticles (Pd, Pt, Au-NPs) can be transformed to thermally stable single atoms (Pd, Pt, Au-SAs) above 900 °C in an inert atmosphere. The atomic dispersion of metal single atoms was confirmed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structures. The dynamic process was recorded by in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, which showed competing sintering and atomization processes during NP-to-SA conversion. Further, density functional theory calculations revealed that high-temperature NP-to-SA conversion was driven by the formation of the more thermodynamically stable Pd-N4 structure when mobile Pd atoms were captured on the defects of nitrogen-doped carbon. The thermally stable single atoms (Pd-SAs) exhibited even better activity and selectivity than nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene.

Abstract:Intermetallic compounds have emerged as a class of promising electrocatalysts for fuel cells; however, it is still a great challenge to synthesize monodisperse and small intermetallic phases by an economical and scalable method. Herein, we demonstrate a generally applicable solid-phase seed-mediated diffusion strategy for controllable synthesis of ordered L10-PtM (M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Zn) nanoparticles, where the preprepared monodispersed Pt seeds are used as the growth sites. The freeze-drying procedure produces monodisperse metal precursors on Pt/C, and the subsequent annealing process in a H2/Ar atmosphere obtains highly dispersed and ultrasmall PtM intermetallic nanocrystals (∼3 nm) on carbon supports. More importantly, such a strategy is also applicable to the preparation of a high-loaded PtMn intermetallic catalyst (50 wt %). Taking PtMn/C catalysts as examples, we illustrate their synthetic details and formation mechanism of the desired ordered phases. This approach eliminates the need for energy-consuming filtering and washing procedures, which makes it very promising for large-scale production.

Abstract:A surface‐confinement growth mechanism is uncovered to selectively fabricate target structured ultrafine bimetallic nanoparticles such as the core‐shell and intermetallic PtM nanoparticles on the N functionalized carbon. Through structure manipulation, excellent catalytic performance toward electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction is obtained over the supported intermetallic Pt3Fe nanoparticles. Due to the surface inhomogeneity of the solid supports, direct growth of uniform bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with controllable structure and size thereon is particularly challenging. Herein, a surface‐confinement strategy is reported to directly prepare ultrafine bimetallic PtM NPs (MFe, Cu, and Co) with structure of core‐shell or intermetallic compounds on an N functionalized carbon support (NC). It is found that the N species of NC support can atomically disperse metal cations of precursors, which largely renders uniform nucleation and growth of bimetallic NPs and fine structure modulation of them. In another regard, metal transfer is confined to a narrow region on NC via N‐mediation, hence greatly favoring localized particle growth and formation of ultrafine bimetallic NPs. Remarkably, the ultrafine 3.1 ± 0.7 nm intermetallic Pt3Fe NPs on NC displayed excellent catalytic activity and durability toward electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction.

On the Role of Sn Segregation of Pt-Sn Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts attract extensive attention for relevant catalysis processes due to their flexible structures, while the structure evolution under specific conditions is ambiguous. This paper describes the structure evolution of Pt-Sn bimetallic nanoparticles for catalytic dehydrogenation, especially Sn segregation for surface recovery of a Pt-Sn alloy. An acid etching-reduction process was adopted to investigate the migration of Sn atoms after surface Sn species loss. By acid etching, Sn atoms at the surface of Pt-Sn alloy nanoparticles were removed, leaving nanoparticles with a Pt-rich shell and an unchanged Pt3Sn alloy core. Excitedly, during the following reduction process, the Pt3Sn alloy surface was recovered due to the migration of Sn atoms from the core to the surface, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Subsequent studies on the catalyst performance for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) showed that the recoverable Pt3Sn alloy surface structure contributed to the high efficiency with 92% propene selectivity even after 5 cycles of the acid etching-reduction procedure. Abstract:With the surge of shale gas, propane dehydrogenation becomes increasingly important to synthesize propylene. Herein, a new type of ordered PtSnZn intermetallic clusters (∼0.9 nm) supported on Al 2 O 3 was synthesized by a stepwise approach including electrostatic adsorption and temperature-programmed reduction. The structure of the PtSnZn clusters results from a kinetically controlled process, and Pt atoms in the PtSnZn clusters are well isolated by Sn and Zn with Pt−Sn and Pt−Zn pairs. The PtSnZn/Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance for propane dehydrogenation, which achieves ∼100% propylene selectivity and keeps a high propane conversion (>40%) during stability testing. The catalytic performance of PtSnZn/Al 2 O 3 is also significantly higher than that of Pt/Al 2 O 3 , PtSn/Al 2 O 3 , and PtZn/Al 2 O 3 . Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that the Sn 5p and Zn 4s orbitals are hybridized with Pt 5d by forming Pt−Sn and Pt−Zn pairs, which leads to the d band center of Pt deviating from Fermi level (−2.81 eV). The shift of the Pt d band center significantly decreases the adsorption energy of propylene and prohibits further dehydrogenation, resulting in high propylene selectivity and stability.

Selective Steam Reforming of N‐dodecane over Stable Subnanometric NiPt Clusters Encapsulated in Silicalite‐1 Zeolite

Abstract:Multimetallic nanocatalysts have attracted increasing attention for steam reforming owing to highly exposed active sites, but often suffering from severe sintering. Herein, we design subnanometric Ni-Pt bimetal clusters (ca. 1.7 nm) encapsulated in Silicalite-1 zeolite (2Ni0.5Pt@S-1) through ligand-stabilized method to prevent sintering by fixing the metal into microporous channels. In the steam reforming of n-dodecane test, 2Ni0.5Pt@S-1 gave an excellent activity and stability with a decrease of conversion only 4% at 600 degrees C for 4 hr, which was about a quarter that of 2Ni0.5Pt/S-1 synthesized by co-impregnation method, ascribing to superior sinter-resistance of encapsulation structure. Moreover, 2Ni0.5Pt@S-1 exhibited a higher H-2 selectivity up to 69.9% than that of 2Ni0.5Pt/S-1 (64.4%), owing to suppressed methanation reaction based on subnanometric clusters. Shape-selective steam reforming of n-dodecane and ofm-xylene was also observed, because of m-xylene could hardly diffuse into the zeolite channels due to its bulky molecular size, further preventing potential deactivation by tars in reforming process.
Electronic Metal-Support Interactions Between Zeolite and Confined Platinum-Tin Nanoalloy Boosting Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Zeolite-confined Pt-based bimetallic catalysts have shown great potential in the direct dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction, yet the low affinity of the bimetallic species with the zeolite supports often results in catalytic deactivation during long-term reactions. Creating strong interactions between metals and supports holds the promise to address this challenge. Herein, we report S-1 zeolite confined Pt3Sn bimetallic catalysts that exhibit enhanced activity and stability for PDH through electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI). Notably, the optimized Pt3Sn/S-1 catalyst shows a 310-fold increase in the catalytic stability compared to its SiO2-supported counterpart. Experimental and theoretical studies unveil that the Pt3Sn/S-1 catalyst is characterized by direct Sn–Pt–O–Si(OSi)3 interfacial bonds. The strong chemical bonding leads to electron transfer from Pt3Sn to S-1, signifying the strong EMSI effect that modulates the electronic and chemical properties of Pt3Sn. The presence of EMSI enhances the adsorption of propane and facilitate the desorption of propylene, consequently boosting both the activity and selectivity of the catalyst. This work highlights the profound impact of metal-support interactions for the development of high-performance PDH catalysts.

Abstract:The recent focus on high entropy alloys in the field of electrocatalysis has led to a corresponding increase in interest in nanosizing these materials. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism by which they are formed at low temperatures remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the formation and subsequent growth of PtFeCoNiPd particles following a facile and industrial-scalable incipient wetness impregnation approach using quasi-simultaneous in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The initial formation of crystallites with a size of 2-3 nm and an fcc structure, which are rich in Pt and Pd, was observed. A continuous incorporation of the non-precious elements at elevated temperatures leads to crystallite growth while maintaining an fcc structure. Upon reaching a temperature of 330 °C, Bragg peaks corresponding to a face-centered tetragonal phase emerge, indicating a transition to an intermetallic species. The degree of ordering was found to be dependent on the atomic ratio of precious to non-precious elements in the samples, with the synthesis temperature program also influencing this degree of ordering. This suggests the possibility of synthetic control.

Abstract:Up to now, vibrations have been mostly sensed by measuring displacement, velocity and acceleration. The most common types of vibration sensors are piezoelectric, capacitive, null-balance, strain gage, optoelectronic, resonance beam or piezoresistive. We present a low cost and low power vibration detector based on the measurement of magnetic field variations induced in a recent SS501 GMR magnetic sensor, which has never been applied for that. Vibrations on small ferromagnetic pieces disturb the Earth's magnetic field. These weak perturbations can be detected and measured over the assumed constant Earth's magnetic field, which is uniform over a wide area. A novel array configuration of 3 half bridge GMR sensors powered in chain is used to measure magnetic field variations in X, Y, and Z axes with a very low power consumption. This paper includes a characterization of the novel GMR sensors, and describes the practical design and implementation of our vibration detector. As an example it is measured the rotating speed of a small drilling machine and its vibrations at different speeds (rpm). The results are shown and discussed.
