Abstract:The organic matter (OM) preserved in Arctic Ocean sediments is of great importance to the global carbon budget. However, works that apply multiple proxies to determine the distribution and concentration of organic carbon (OC) in the surface sediments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas remain limited. Here a multiproxy approach based on bulk OM parameters and the branched vs. isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index was used to investigate the distribution and sources of OM in the surface sediments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas. Binary and ternary mixing models were applied to trace the contribution of different OC sources to the total OC in the study area. The δ 13 C values of the sediments provided by the binary model showed that the proportion of terrestrial OC fell in the range of 27.4%−79.8% (46.2% on average). The BIT index returned the lowest fraction (4.8%−27.3%, 12.0% on average). The ternary mixing model was employed to determine the plant-, soil-, and marine-derived fractions of the total OM. The ternary model showed that 11.5%±6.3%, 31.4%±9.5%, and 57.1%±12.4% of OM in the sediment of the study area was derived from soil, plants, and marine sources, respectively. The differences in OM composition between the west and east sides of the Chukchi Sea were controlled by OM inputs from key water masses ( i.e ., Anadyr Water and Alaska Coastal Water), river discharge, and the nutrient supply from the Pacific inflow that supports marine productivity.
Centennial-scale Variability of Sea-Ice Cover in the Chukchi Sea Since AD 1850 Based on Biomarker Reconstruction

Abstract:Paleo-climate proxy records documenting sea-ice extent are important sources of information to assess the time of emergence and magnitude of on-going changes in the Arctic Ocean and better predict future climate and environmental evolution in that region. In this study, a suite of geochemical tracers including total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N), stable isotope composition of organic carbon and nitrogen (δ 13C, δ 15N), and phytoplankton biomarkers (highly branched isoprenoids (HBIs) and sterols) were measured in a marine sediment core to document the sea-ice variability in the Chukchi Sea since the beginning of the Industrial Era. The downcore profile of the sea-ice proxy HBIs suggests a transition from extensive sea ice in the late 19th century to Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) in AD 1930–1990s and then moderate sea-ice cover since 1990s. Rising of all HBI abundances between AD 1865–1875 indicate a transient retreat of summer ice edge off the shelf followed by a return to near-perennial sea ice till 1920–1930 as revealed by the absence of HBIs and brassicasterol. Sea ice retreat occurred again in AD 1920–1930 and followed by colder decades in 1940s–1960s before a sustained decline since the 1990s. The downcore profile of C/N, δ 13C of organic matter and sterols indicates a gradual increase of terrigenous inputs accelerating during the most recent decades likely due to enhanced fluvial run-off and sediment transport by sediment-laden sea ice. Concomitantly, increasing δ 15N values suggest limited nutrient utilization due to enhanced stratification of the surface ocean caused by increased freshening. The role of the Arctic oscillation (AO), the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) are discussed to explore potential drivers of the observed sea-ice changes.

Abstract:Understanding fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 during transitions from glacial to interglacial states is critical for deciphering climate dynamics. This study investigates the influence of Late Pleistocene Arctic ice sheets on organic carbon remobilization and its subsequent effects on atmospheric CO2 concentrations. We demonstrate that the main source of organic carbon deposited in the Arctic Ocean and northern Nordic Seas was derived from glacially exhumed terrestrial and shelf sediments, rather than primary productivity. The degradation of remobilized organic carbon contributed significantly to an increase in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), accounting for about 15-26% of the current DIC stock. Such a considerable addition poses a challenge to the ocean's CO2 absorption capacity, potentially converting the Arctic region into a net carbon source. Nevertheless, the uncertainties associated with the age framework, along with the complexity of organic carbon degradation, limit the accuracy of carbon release assessments. Our findings offer new insights into the Arctic Ocean and northern Nordic Seas' roles in global CO2 dynamics, emphasizing the urgent need for more precise studies on the ice sheetdriven carbon release and its broader climatic implications.
Seasonal and Spatial Variability of Sea Ice and Phytoplankton Biomarker Flux in the Chukchi Sea (western Arctic Ocean)

Abstract:Sediment traps were deployed at 870 m water-depth from August 2008 to September 2009 at station DM in the Chukchi Sea (western Arctic Ocean) in an area covered by sea ice in winter to determine seasonal fluxes of HBIs and phytoplankton sterols in order to improve our understanding of sea ice proxies. HBI-III fluxes and PIIIIP25 are for the first time documented in the Arctic Ocean to evaluate their significance for paleoclimate reconstructions. Highest mass fluxes were found from mid-July 2009 to September 2009 contrasting with low values during all other months (i.e., December 2008 to early July 2009). Indeed, during the winter months IP25 was not detected but increased by a factor of nine over summer 2009 reflecting sea ice algae and pelagic phytoplankton production at the sea ice edge. High HBIs and low sterol fluxes at the end of summer 2008 are consistent with the complete melting of sea ice and post-bloom conditions. We found that HBI-III was more abundant in the early stage of sea ice retreat that characterizes the marginal ice zone. These sea ice biomarkers were also measured in surface sediments across a wide range of sea ice cover in the western Arctic region. Higher IP25 values were found in the southeastern Chukchi Sea and decreased westwards where sea ice conditions are less severe. Stronger positive linear relationship were found between the sea ice proxy indexes PBIP25 and PIIIIP25 and spring sea ice concentrations than with IP25 in agreement with earlier findings from other Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

Abstract:Rapid warming and loss of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean could play an important role in the dissolution and emission of greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). We investigated dissolved N2O in spatiotemporal distribution on the northeastern Bering Sea shelf (NEBS) in the summer of 2012. The results showed that N2O concentrations were higher in the Chirikov Basin (mean ± SD, 14.8 ± 2.4 nmol/L) than in the south of St. Lawrence Island (mean ± SD, 17.7 ± 2.3 nmol/L). In the Chirikov Basin, N2O displayed a decreasing distribution pattern from west (~20.4 nmol/L) to east (~12.9 nmol/L). In the area south of St. Lawrence Island, N2O almost presented a two-layer structure, although it showed a vertically homogeneous distribution in the inner shelf. In the cold bottom water, the N2O was affected mainly by in situ production or sediment emission. Longer resident time may cause N2O accumulation in the cold bottom water. The calculated sea–air flux (−1.6~36.2 μmol/(m2·d)) indicates that the NEBS is an important potential source of atmospheric N2O and could play an important role in global oceanic N2O emission with intensifying global issues.
Phytoplankton Distribution in the Western Arctic Ocean During a Summer of Exceptional Ice Retreat

Abstract:A drastic ice decline in the Arctic Ocean, triggered by global warming, could generate rapid changes in the upper ocean layers. The ice retreat is particularly intense over the Canadian Basin where large ice free areas were observed since 2007. The CHINARE 2008 expedition was conducted in the Western Arctic (WA) ocean during a year of exceptional ice retreat (August–September 2008). This study investigates whether a significant reorganization of the primary producers in terms of species, biomass and productivity has to be observed in the WA as a result of the intense ice melting. Both pigments (HPLC) and taxonomy (microscopy) acquired in 2008 allowed to determine the phytoplanktonic distribution from Bering Strait (65° N) to extreme high latitudes over the Alpha Ridge (86° N) encompassing the Chukchi shelf, the Chukchi Borderland and the Canadian Basin. Two different types of phytoplankton communities were observed. Over the ice-free Chukchi shelf, relatively high chl-a concentrations (1–5 mg m−3) dominated by 80 % of diatoms. In the Canadian Basin, surface waters are oligotrophic (<0.1 mg m−3) and algal assemblages were dominated by haptophytes and diatoms while higher biomasses (~0.4 mg m−3) related to a deep Subsurface Chlorophyll Maximum (SCM) are associated to small-sized (nano and pico) phytoplankton. The ice melting onset allows to point out three different zones over the open basin: (i) the ice free condition characterized by deep and unproductive phytoplankton communities dominated by nanoplankton, (ii) an extended (78°–83° N) Active Melting Zone (AMZ) where light penetration associated to the stratification start off and enough nutrient availability drives to the highest biomass and primary production due to both diatoms and large flagellates, (iii) heavy ice conditions found north to 83° N allowing light limitation and consequently low biomass and primary production associated to pico and nanoplankton. To explain the poverty (Canadian Basin) and the richness (Chukchi shelf) of the WA, we explore the role of the nutrient-rich Pacific Waters, the bathymetry and two characteristics linked to the intense ice retreat: the stratification and the Surface Freshwater Layer (SFL). The freshwater accumulation induced a strong stratification limiting the nutrient input from the subsurface Pacific waters. This results in a biomass impoverishment of the well-lit layer and compels the phytoplankton to grow in subsurface. The phytoplankton distribution in the Chukchi Borderland and north Canadian Basin, during the summer of exceptional ice retreat (2008), suggested when compared to in-situ data from a more ice covered year (1994), recent changes with a decrease of the phytoplankton abundance while averaged biomass was similar. The 2008 obtained phytoplankton data in the WA provided a state of the ecosystem which will be useful to determine both past and future changes in relation with predicted sea ice decline.
Variations in Organic Carbon Loading of Surface Sediments from the Shelf to the Slope of the Chukchi Sea,Arctic Ocean

Abstract:The content of organic carbon（OC） normalized to the specific surface area（SSA） of sediment is widely used to trace variations in OC loading（OC/SSA）.This study presents observations of OC/SSA of surface sediments collected in the Chukchi Sea,a typical Arctic marginal sea.Shelf sediments exhibit much higher OC/SSA values than slope sediments in the study area.Compared with OC/SSA values reported from the East Siberian Shelf and Mackenzie River,the slope sediments possess lower OC loading.This abrupt decrease in OC/SSA is mostly related to the lower primary production on slope as well as possible oxidization processes.The results of linear regression analysis between OC and SSA indicate a sedimentary source rock for the OC in the Chukchi Sea sediments.Moreover,shelf sediments with low SSA possess a larger rock OC fraction than slope sediments do.The dataset of the present study enables a more thorough understanding of regional OC cycling in the Chukchi Sea.
Changing sources and burial of organic carbon in the Chukchi Sea sediments with retreating sea ice over recent centuries

Abstract:Decreasing sea ice extent caused by climate change is affecting the carbon cycle of the Arctic Ocean. In this study, surface sediments across the western Arctic Ocean are investigated to characterize sources of sedimentary organic carbon (OC). Bulk organic parameters (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, δ 13 C org , and δ 15 N) and molecular organic biomarkers (e.g., sterols and highly branched isoprenoids – HBIs) are combined to distinguish between sympagic, pelagic, and terrestrial OC sources. Their downcore profiles generated at the Chukchi Sea R1 core site (74 ∘ N) are then used to evaluate changes in the relative contribution of these components of sedimentary OC over the last 200 years with decreasing sea ice. Our data evidence that, from the 1820s to the 1930s, prevailing high sea ice cover inhibited in situ primary production, resulting in prominent land-derived material in sediments. Then, from the 1930s to the 1980s, primary production started increasing with the gradual decline of summer sea ice. The ratio of sympagic and pelagic OC began to rise to account for the larger portion of sedimentary OC. Since the 1980s, accelerated sea ice loss led to enhanced primary production, stabilizing over the last decades due to freshwater-induced surface ocean stratification in summer.

Abstract:In this study, lignin-derived phenols were used to determine the sources and distribution of sedimentary organic matter along the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean. The lignin parameter syringyl/vanillyl (S/V) and cinnamyl/vanillyl (C/V) ratios are used to indicate vegetation sources; and the ratios of vanillic acid/vanillin, (Ad/Al)v and syringic acid/syringaldehyde, (Ad/Al)s are used as indicators of lignin diagenesis. Results showed the predominance of woody gymnosperm signal at the easternmost location in the northern Bering Sea, a mixture of refractory non-woody angiosperm and fresher gymnosperm tissues in the Chukchi Sea, and signal of fresher woody gymnosperm tissues in the northernmost locations in the Chukchi Sea. The lignin materials showed gradual increase in decomposition stage during transport along the northern Bering Sea. Hydrodynamic sorting process, which is the retention of coarser materials nearshore and transportation of finer particles farther offshore, most probably occurred along the east coast of the northern Bering Sea. In Chukchi Sea, the non-woody angiosperm tissues could have originated from the Canadian Arctic and gymnosperm tissues could be from the Russian Arctic side. The fresher materials in the northernmost Chukchi Sea could have been transported here via the ice-rafting process. Detection of fresh lignin materials and the occurrence of lignin decomposition mean that this region could be sensitive to the impact of climate change.
Rates of sedimentary organic carbon preservation in the Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea, and their response to climate change over the past 75 years

Abstract:The Arctic Ocean is rapidly warming. In this paper, we document changes in the source, distribution, and accumulation rate of organic matter (OM) for three sediment cores in the Bering and Chukchi seas to investigate changes to the oceanic carbon cycle over the past ~75 years. Analyses were undertaken using bulk properties, such as total organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), stable carbon isotope (δ 13 C), OC to TN molar ratio (C/N), and biomarkers (lignin phenols). The OC, TN, and lignin (Σ8, in mg (g sediment) −1 ) contents were found to be significantly related to the fraction of sand (Sand%) as a result of sediment sorting and/or different sediment sources. Using an end-member mixing model, we estimated marine OM accounted for ~67% of all organic matter in all cores, being the dominant source. Moreover, terrestrial OM mainly originated from angiosperm non-woody tissue, while moss contribution was negligible. In the Bering Sea shelf, OC% has not changed over time, but there have been some extreme peaks around the 1960s–1970s and in 2005, which correspond to increased terrestrial input from North American rivers. In the southern core from the Chukchi Sea, the OC% showed an apparent decrease after 2000, accompanied by an increase in sand content, likely due to enhanced delivery of volcanic rocks by the Pacific Inflow from the Bering Sea. In contrast, in the northern core from the Chukchi Sea, the OC% showed a significant increasing trend, with some peaks occurring at the same time as in the Bering Sea core. The mean increase rate was compared to the increase in Siberian riverine discharge, which both could be caused by long-term climate changes. The results highlight the regional differences in the response of OC preservation to climate change and other controlling factors. Further studies with higher spatial resolution are required to better understand the preservation of OC in response to climate change.

Abstract:The Arctic shelf is an important carbon reservoir, especially the Chukchi Sea, which plays a vital role in the biogeochemical processes of polar carbon cycles. In this study, we measured the contents of black carbon (BC) and total organic carbon (TOC) in a sediment core of the Chukchi Sea shelf, to evaluate the controlling factors of distribution and burial of BC and TOC. Our results show that the distribution of TOC and BC was strongly influenced by the Pacific Water (PW) inflow, resulting in approximate synchronous change since the early Holocene. The early Holocene (~9.9 to 8.0 cal kyr BP) was characterized by the minimum of TOC, total nitrogen (TN), and BC, and the most depleted δ 13 C TOC and δ 13 C BC values throughout the Holocene, which indicate low primary productivity and low BC supplies under the weak PW flux. The carbon (TOC and BC) burial on the Chukchi Sea shelf was significantly enhanced during the middle Holocene (8.0–4.0 cal kyr BP) due to the rapid increase in PW flux. Since 4.0 cal kyr BP, PW inflow is stable and active, which enables sea ice extent to modulate the stratigraphic variations of BC. In particular, an increase in summer Arctic sea ice during this period may enhance ice-rafted debris and terrestrial carbon supply by promoting erosion of coastal peat soils and permafrost. Our results suggest that PW inflow is the first-order factor controlling Arctic carbon burial during the Holocene, while insolation-induced sea ice increase started playing a role when the PW inflow is active and stable during the late Holocene.

Abstract:Both of the Chukchi Sea and Bering Sea,which are linked through Bering Strait,are key regions to study cli-mate change.A comparative study of sedimentary process between the Chukchi Sea and Bering Sea was conducted via excess 21 0 Pb.The result from station NB22 in the Bering Sea indicated the impact of benthic fauna,while the biological activity in the benthic environment at station R1 7 in the Chukchi Sea was limited.The sediment accumu-lation rates at station R1 7 and station NB22 were 0.6 ±0.1 mm·a -1 and 2.1 ±0.07 mm·a -1 ,respectively.The particle mixing coefficients due to benthic fauna at station NB22 were 1 .38 ±0.92 cm2 ·a -1 without considering sediment process and 0.65 ±0.95 cm2 ·a -1 with considering sediment process.The burial fluxes of organic car-bon,biogenic opal,and CaCO3 in the Bering Sea were 6.85 mmol C·m -2 ·d -1 ,37.7 mmol Si·m -2 ·d -1 , and 3.1 5 mmol C·m -2 ·d -1 ,respectively.Those fluxes in the Chukchi Sea were 5.71 mmol C·m -2 ·d -1 , 9.78 mmol Si·m -2 ·d -1 ,and 3.08 mmol C·m -2 ·d -1 ,respectively.Meanwhile,the Chukchi Sea is charac-terized by high efficiency of vertical marine biological pump.The lateral transport of marine biological pump may be significant in the shelf of Bering Sea.Therefore,the 21 0 Pb in the marine sediment could be applied not only to quantify sediment accumulation rate and burial fluxes for biogenic materials but also to indicate intensity of biologi-cal activity in benthic environment.

Abstract:Core samples C8 and B2-9 from the seafloor of the Arctic were dated with 210Pb to obtain a consecutive sequence of oceanic sedimentary environments at the interval of a decade during 1880-1999 and 1889-1999. A variety of biomarkers were detected, including n-alkane, isoprenoid, fatty acid, sterol, etc.According to the characteristics of their molecular indices (∑nC22 +/ nC–21 、TABHC,CPI,CPIA,∑C20:0-/nC20:0+, C18:2/C18:0) and in consideration of the variation of sterols content (C27, C28, and C29 sterols),the 100-year variation history of subarctic sea paleoenvironment was reestablished. Composition of organic matter indicates that substance is mainly contributed by the terrigenous origin and marine silicate organisms. The results also suggest that the record of biomarkers from the surface sediments (3～0 cm)in the Bering Sea represents a period from 1980s to the late 1990s. The strong signal of the Arctic warming is preserved in the sediments. The fact that Arctic greenhouse effect was multiplied has further proved the response of marine biological process in the polar region to the climate change.

Abstract:The Arctic Ocean plays a key role in the global carbon cycle and budget.This semi-closed ocean and its vast and shallow marginal shelf seas surrounded by widespread tundra makes it a unique area to study the carbon source, sink and budget, with consideration of land-ocean interaction and land and ocean as a whole.Over the last three decades because of global warming, sea ice has rapidly decreased.This has induced air-ice-sea-land multi-geosphere interaction that has greatly affected the carbon source and sink in the arctic areas.Such rapid change has not only led to the release of methane and carbon dioxide in degraded permafrost but has also altered the physical, biological and microbial carbon pumps.This process may be attributed to changes of freshwater input, water mixing and circulation, terrestrial fluvial transport, and nutrient supply to the Arctic Ocean.In this review paper, we discuss how global warming and rapid sea ice retreat affects the Arctic carbon sink and source, with a focus on the biological pump, terrestrial carbon input, and carbon burial in the Arctic Ocean. Spatial and temporal variations in sea surface pCO2 and air-sea flux of CO2 in the Bering Sea revealed by satellite-based data during 2003–2019

Abstract:The understanding of long-time-series variations in air-sea CO 2 flux in the Bering Sea is critical, as it is the passage area from the North Pacific Ocean water to the Arctic. Here, a data-driven remote sensing retrieval method is constructed based on a large amount of underway partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ) data in the Bering Sea. After several experiments, a Gaussian process regression model with input parameters of sea surface temperature, sea surface height, mixed-layer depth, chlorophyll a concentration, dry air mole fractions of CO 2 , and bathymetry was selected. After validation with independent data, the root mean square error of p CO 2 was< 24 μatm (R 2 = 0.94) with satisfactory performance. Then, we reconstructed the sea surface p CO 2 in the Bering Sea from 2003 to 2019 and estimated the corresponding air-sea CO 2 fluxes. Significant seasonal variations were identified, with higher sea surface p CO 2 in winter/spring than in summer/autumn in both the basin and shelf area. Semiquantitative analysis reveals that the Bering Sea is a non-temperature-dominated area with a mean temperature effect on p CO 2 of 12.7 μatm and a mean non-temperature effect of −51.8 μatm. From 2003 to 2019, atmospheric p CO 2 increased at a rate of 2.1 μatm yr −1 , while sea surface p CO 2 in the basin increased rapidly (2.8 μatm yr −1 ); thus, the CO 2 emissions from the basin increased. However, the carbon sink in the continental shelf still continuously increased. The whole Bering Sea exhibited an increasing carbon sink with the area integral of air-sea CO 2 fluxes increasing from 6 to 19 TgC over 17 years. Meanwhile, the seasonal amplitudes in p CO 2 in the shelf area also increased, approaching 14 μatm per decade. The reaction of the continuously added CO 2 in continental seawater reduced the ocean CO 2 system capacity. This is the first study to present long-time-series satellite data with high resolution in the Bering Sea, which is beneficial for studying the changes in ocean ecosystems and carbon sink capacity.

Biogeochemical Characteristics of Organic Carbon in Surface Sediments from the Chukchi Sea

Abstract:The organic carbon(OC) contents in surface sediments from the Chukchi Sea collected by Chinese Arctic Research Expedition during July 1999 and July 2003 were analyzed.It is shown from the analysis results that the mean OC contents in surface sediments from the Chukchi Sea are about 1.41%,and are much higher than those from the East China Sea and some shelf areas in the world;the ratio of ogranic carbon to nitrogen(C/N ratio) is 8.69,which reflects the mixed source of organic matter with the marine autogenic material being the main source;the OC content is strongly correlated with the ogranic nitrogen content(R=0.93);the OC content is significantly correlated with the grain size of sediment(R=(0.71)),and the OC content in fine-grained clayey sediment is higher than that in sandy sediment;the OC content in water depths to 200 m increases with increasing depth;the OC content is significantly correlated with the biogenic silicon content;and the OC content varies slightly with the latitude.A preliminary discussion on the OC source in surface sediments from the Chukchi Sea is made together with the observed data during 2 arctic expeditions,and it is concluded that the burial of sedimentary OC may depend mainly on the biological pump.

Abstract:It has been predicted that the Arctic Ocean will sequester much greater amounts of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from the atmosphere as a result of sea ice melt and increasing primary productivity. However, this prediction was made on the basis of observations from either highly productive ocean margins or ice-covered basins before the recent major ice retreat. We report here a high-resolution survey of sea-surface CO 2 concentration across the Canada Basin, showing a great increase relative to earlier observations. Rapid CO 2 invasion from the atmosphere and low biological CO 2 drawdown are the main causes for the higher CO 2 , which also acts as a barrier to further CO 2 invasion. Contrary to the current view, we predict that the Arctic Ocean basin will not become a large atmospheric CO 2 sink under ice-free conditions.
Biomarker evidence of the water mass structure and primary productivity changes in the Chukchi Sea over the past 70 years

Abstract:The Chukchi Sea has experienced significant changes under global warming in the Common Era, including the shift of primary productivity. However, modern observations are too short to fully investigate the effects of environmental changes in this area. Here, we analyzed lipid biomarkers (e.g. long-chain n -alkanes, n -alkanols, n -alkanoic acids, diols, and sterols) from a sediment core (R07) collected from the Chukchi Sea shelf to determine phytoplankton primary productivity variations and factors influencing these changes over the past 70 years. Similar trends of the abundance of terrestrial ecosystem-derived compounds (e.g. long-chain n -alkanes, n -alkanols, n -alkanoic acids, and C 32 1,15-diol) indicate that terrigenous input increased from ca. 1946 towards ca. 1983 and then decreased thereafter. In comparison, biomarkers with marine origin indicate that the ratio of diatoms to dinoflagellates increased after ca. 1983 towards the core-top (ca. 2011). Concurrent changes in terrigenous input and phytoplankton community indicated a shift in water mass structure at ca. 1983 (i.e. the Alaska Coastal Water decreased and the Bering Sea Water increased), which may be attributed to the phase shift of the Arctic Oscillation and/or unsynchronized flow changes in different water masses. Owing to the different water mass properties, the change of water mass structure caused intense water mixing and the resulting high turbidity in the study area, which led to light limitation for phytoplankton growth. These conditions probably account for the reduced phytoplankton primary productivity from ca. 1983 to ca. 2000 in the general trend of increasing. The results indicate that, in addition to global warming and sea ice retreat, other factors, such as change in regional water mass structure (i.e. different water masses), may also have a significant influence on the primary productivity and the phytoplankton community in the Chukchi Sea shelf.

Abstract:We used molecular biomarkers (brassicasterol, dinosterol and C37 alkenones) measured from the surface sediments of the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the western Arctic Ocean in years of 1999 and 2010 to represent the groups of phytoplankton (diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophores) and reconstruct the phytoplankton composition structure and biomass. The distribution of concentrations of three biomarkers were compatible to previous studies on measured phytoplankton, which showed that the phytoplankton biomass was most abundant in the Chukchi Sea, followed by the Bering Sea and the western Arctic Ocean, and diatoms were the dominant group. It suggests that molecular biomarkers are the suitable indicators of phytoplankton composition, structure and abundance. A record of biomarkers in a sediment core (NB01) collected at the Bering Sea in 2010 presented that the biomass of three phytoplankton groups increased in past 107 years, and their variation patterns were consistent. The synchronous increase of concentrations of phytoplankton biomarkers and cholesterol, a proxy of zooplankton biomass, implied that the primary production increased intensely in the last hundreds of years, corresponding to the trend of sea-ice melting as a result of global warming. Moreover, our results suggested that the combined effect of the anormal interannual changes of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Arctic Oscillations (AO) played a key role in regulating the interannual and decadal variations of phytoplankton biomass and community composition, giving us an insight into the impact of atmospheric circulation on phytoplankton production and carbon flux in the Arctic seas.

Abstract:Research molecular component characteristics and characteristic ratios of n-alkanes, isoprenoid, Unresolved Complex Mixtures (UCM) and sterane of sediment core P7327 in the Chukchi Sea. Results show that component characteristics of n-alkanes at most sections are similar; bimodal pattern shows dual contribution of terrigenous and marine sources. High-carbon hydrocarbon/low-carbon hydrocarbon ratio (H/L) of n-alkanes in sediment core (1-121 cm) is 0.299 similar to 1.326, C-27/C-19 ratio is 1.392 similar to 7.565, lipoid ratio TAR and ACL are 1.015 similar to 5.531 and 0.930 similar to 7.610 respectively. These 4 parameters further show that, sources from terrigenous higher plants and marine sources (lower algae, fungi and submerged plants) coexist in modern sediments of the Chukchi Sea. Researches also show that Carbon Preference Index (CPI) of sediment core (7-184 cm) is 1.208 similar to 1.664, close to 1; pristane/phytane ratio (pr/ph) is low at most sections; a lot of Unresolved Complex Mixtures (UCM) prevail in the samples; U/R ratio is 2.2-4.3. These 3 parameters show that petroleum hydrocarbon with high maturity is input, and subject to biodegradation later. According to intact n-alkanes series and obvious UCM coexistence in sediment core P7327 of the Chukchi Sea (in particular, carbon chain length of n-alkanes in 182-184 cm sediment is obviously shorter than that of other sections), sterane isomerization parameter C(29)20S/(20S + 20R) and C-29 beta beta/(beta beta+alpha alpha) is 0.37-0.47 and 0.45-0.53 respectively, which reach or close to isomerization balance end point and belong to a mature range. Different from contemporary sediments, maturity of organic matters perhaps mean that, contemporary sediments of the Chukchi Sea may be mixed with petroleum source. These petroleum hydrocarbons may come from leaked oil and gas reservoirs in the deep sea (including pollution from human activities), and may be affected by microbial action of bacteria.
