Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is crucial in investigating and applying optical vortices (OVs). Here, we propose a novel diffraction device, a binaural circular aperture (BCA), to detect the OAM modes of OVs. The BCA is well designed and composed of a lemniscate and two semicircles. We first investigate the intensity distribution of the OVs passing through the BCA theoretically. The OVs with different OAM modes will produce different diffraction patterns, and the modes can be directly identified from the diffraction fringes. Building this BCA with an amplitude spatial light modulator, the OAM modes ranging from -6 to +6 are experimentally identified, and the results are well consistent with the simulation. When the BCA is resized in the millimetre level, the influence on the identification of OAM modes is very limited. These results show that the BCA we proposed can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly identify the OAM modes of OVs, and shows its insensitivity to the dimensional deviation.

Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:Optical vortex beams (VBs), a structured light possessing helical phase—front and carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), have recently emerged as a promising perspective in optical manipulation, optical tweezer and optical communication. In this contribution, by taking advantage of the strong light–matter interaction, a nonlinear diffraction method is demonstrated to identify OAM modes. The nonlinear diffraction device (NDD) composed of WS2 nanosheets is employed to excite the optical Kerr nonlinear effect. Owing to the large Kerr coefficient of layered WS2, the spatial phase shift of VBs are readily regulated, resulting in controllable diffraction rings and tails, from which we can directly identify the magnitude and signs of OAM modes. The incident light intensity also expands the intensity distribution because the enhanced nonlinear phase shift will enlarge the diffraction rings, which provides an efficient way to identify the OAM and intensity of VBs simultaneously. It is anticipated that the optical nonlinearity might afford new opportunities for detecting structured lights and may have great potentials in designing all-optical OAM devices, etc.

Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.

Abstract:We present a method to measure the high-order optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) with a variable cylindrical lens pair. The optical system consists of two cylindrical lenses with the opposite focal length. It produces a rotating position—spatial frequency transformation of phase modulation by changing the angle between the two cylindrical lenses. With this feature, the method can flexibly measure the OAM states of the vortex beams with different beam waists. The OAM states are determined by the number and direction of dark stripes of the diffraction pattern. The measurements of the topological charge and the radial index of Laguerre–Gaussian mode are demonstrated. As a compact high-order OAM measuring device, the variable cylindrical lens pair may find potential applications in optical communication.

Abstract:Measuring the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of vortex beams, including the magnitude and the sign, has great application prospects due to its theoretically unbounded and orthogonal modes. Here, the sign-distinguishable OAM measurement in optomechanics is proposed, which is achieved by monitoring the shift of the transmission spectrum of the probe field in a double Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) rotational-cavity system. Compared with the traditional single LG rotational cavity, an asymmetric optomechanically induced transparency window can occur in our system. Meanwhile, the position of the resonance valley has a strong correlation with the magnitude and sign of OAM. This originally comes from the fact that the effective detuning of the cavity mode from the driving field can vary with the magnitude and sign of OAM, which causes the spectral shift to be directional for different signs of OAM. Our scheme solves the shortcoming of the inability to distinguish the sign of OAM in optomechanics, and works well for high-order vortex beams with topological charge value $\pm 45$, which is a significant improvement for measuring OAM based on the cavity optomechanical system.

Abstract:The expression for the total angular momentum carried by a laser optical vortex beam, splits, in the paraxial approximation, into two terms which seem to represent orbital and spin angular momentum respectively. There are, however, two very different competing versions of the formula for the spin angular momentum, one based on the use of the Poynting vector, as in classical electrodynamics, the other related to the canonical expression for the angular momentum which occurs in Quantum Electrodynamic. I analyze the possibility that a sufficiently sensitive optical measurement could decide which of these corresponds to the actual physical angular momentum carried by the beam.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development of femtosecond lasers, the generation and application of optical vortices have been extended to the regime of intense-light-matter interaction. The characterization of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of intense vortex pulses is very critical. Here, we propose and demonstrate a novel photoelectron-based scheme that can in situ distinguish the OAM of the focused intense femtosecond optical vortices without the modification of light helical phase. We employ two-color co-rotating intense circular fields in the strong-field photoionization experiment, in which one color light field is a plane wave serving as the probing pulses and the other one is the vortex pulses whose OAM needs to be characterized. We show that by controlling the spatial profile of the probing pulses, the OAM of the vortex pulses can be clearly identified by measuring the corresponding photoelectron momentum distributions or angle-resolved yields. This work provides a novel in situ detection scenario for the light pulse vorticity and has implications for the studies of ultrafast and intense complex light fields with optical OAM.

Abstract:The recent demonstration of electron vortex beams has opened up the new possibility of studying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the interaction between electron beams and matter. To this aim, methods to analyze the OAM of an electron beam are fundamentally important and a necessary next step. We demonstrate the measurement of electron beam OAM through a variety of techniques. The use of forked holographic masks, diffraction from geometric apertures, diffraction from a knife-edge and the application of an astigmatic lens are all experimentally demonstrated. The viability and limitations of each are discussed with supporting numerical simulations.

Abstract:The ability to measure the orbital angular momentum (OAM) distribution of vortex light is essential for OAM applications. Although there have been many studies on the measurement of OAM modes, it is difficult to quantitatively and instantaneously measure the power distribution among different OAM modes, let alone measure the phase distribution among them. In this work, we propose an OAM complex spectrum analyzer that enables simultaneous measurements of the power and phase distributions of OAM modes by employing the rotational Doppler effect. The original OAM mode distribution is mapped to an electrical spectrum of beat signals using a photodetector. The power and phase distributions of superimposed OAM beams are successfully retrieved by analyzing the electrical spectrum. We also extend the measurement technique to other spatial modes, such as linear polarization modes. These results represent a new landmark in spatial mode analysis and show great potential for applications in OAM-based systems and optical communication systems with mode-division multiplexing.
The avalanche instability of the orbital angular momentum in combined vortex beams

Abstract:We presented a new method for measuring the squares of the amplitudes and phases of partial vortex-beams in a complex beam array in real time. The method is based on measuring the high-order intensity moments and analyzing the solutions of a system of linear equations. Calibration measurements have shown that the measurement error at least for an array of 10-15 beams does not exceed 4%. It has theoretically and experimentally been shown that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of combined singular beams depends essentially on the fractional topological charge p. For integer values of the topological charge, the OAM obtains the maximum value numerically equal to the topological charge of the singular beam. With weak deviations of the topological charge in the direction of fractional values, dips in the orbital moment appear. . It was experimentally shown that even a weak perturbation of the holographic grating leads to a sharp increase in the contribution of partial beams with other integer-order topological charges.

Abstract:To manipulate orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by light beams, there is a great interest in designing various optical elements from the deep-ultraviolet to the microwave. Normally, the OAM variation introduced by optical elements can be attributed to two terms, namely, the dynamic and geometric phases. Up till now, the dynamic contribution induced by optical elements has been clearly recognized. However, the contribution of geometric phase still seems obscure, especially considering the vector vortex beams. In this work, an analytical formula is derived to fully describe the OAM variation introduced by the nonabsorbing optical elements, which perform space-variant polarization-state manipulations. It is found that the geometric contribution can be further divided into two parts: one is directly related to optical elements and the other one explicitly relies solely on the vortices before and after the transformations. Based on this result, the same OAM variation can be achieved with different combinations of the dynamic and/or geometric contributions. With numerical simulations, it is shown that transformation of the optical vortices can be fully and flexibly designed with a family of optical elements. We believe that these results are helpful to understand the effect of optical elements and offer a new perspective to design the optical elements for manipulating the OAM carried by light beams.
Dynamically Sculpturing Plasmonic Vortices: from Integer to Fractional Orbital Angular Momentum

Abstract:As a fundamental tool for light-matter interactions, plasmonic vortex (PV) is extremely useful due to the unique near field property. However, it is a pity that, up to now, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by PVs could not be dynamically and continuously tuned in practice as well as the properties of fractional PVs are still not well investigated. By comparing with two previously reported methods, it is suggested that our proposal of utilizing the propagation induced radial phase gradient of incident Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam is a promising candidate to sculpture PVs from integer to fractional OAM dynamically. Consequently, the preset OAM of PVs could have four composing parts: the incident spin and orbital angular momentum, the geometric contribution of chiral plasmonic structure, and the radial phase gradient dependent contribution. Moreover, an analytical expression for the fractional PV is derived as a linear superposition of infinite numbers of integer PVs described by Bessel function of the first kind. It is also shown that the actual mean OAM of a fractional PV would deviate from the preset value, which is similar with previous results for spatial fractional optical vortices.

Abstract:Longitudinal orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a fundamental property of light that has been the subject of extensive research and applied to diverse important applications, such as optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing. Recently, photons have been observed to possess transverse OAM, where the OAM vector is orthogonal to the direction of light propagation. As the carrier for this unique OAM, the spatiotemporal (ST) optical vortex has attracted considerable interest. Here, we provide a general overview of recent experimental and theoretical advances on such vortices, presenting their synthesis and measurement strategies, highlighting their nontrivial properties in linear propagation and interaction with nonlinear matter, and discussing the possible future trends and challenges.

Abstract:The recognition, decoding and tracking of vortex patterns is of increasing importance in many fields, ranging from the astronomical observations of distant galaxies to turbulence phenomena in liquids or gases. Currently, coherent light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM) are of particular interest for optical communication, metrology, micro-machining or particle manipulation. One common task is to identify characteristic spiral patterns in pixelated intensity maps at real-world signal-to-noise ratios. A recently introduced combination of polar mapping and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was extended to novel sampling configurations and applied to the quantitative analysis of the spiral interference patterns of OAM beams. It is demonstrated that specific information on topological parameters in non-uniform arrays of OAM beams can be obtained from significantly distorted and noisy intensity maps by extracting one- or two-dimensional angular frequency spectra from single or concatenated circular cuts in either spatially fixed or scanning mode. The method also enables the evaluation of the quality of beam shaping and optical transmission. Results of proof-of-principle experiments are presented, resolution limits are discussed, and the potential for applications is addressed.

Abstract:Controlling the orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum, as well as the modulus and phase of the first-order correlation function of a vortex beam produced by a dynamic wander source, is critical for the use of OAM photons in turbulent environments. Based on a derived analytical formula for the first-order correlation function of the light field, a theoretical model and an experimental approach are proposed for synthesizing and detecting complex wander vortex beams in the laboratory. Wander perturbations and spiral phase offsets are considered. The correlation phase and OAM spectrum of complex wander vortex beams are measured with a single spatial light modulator (SLM). The experimental results agree with the theoretical simulations and show that, given a limited region of interest, wander perturbations broaden the OAM spectrum asymmetrically with respect to the initial input mode, with a higher proportion of lower ordered non-signal modes than higher ordered modes. For a large spiral phase offset, the main peak of the OAM spectrum shifts away from the signal mode and toward a lower ordered side mode. Generation and measurement strategies have significant potential for free-space communication and remote sensing in turbulent environments.

Abstract:As one fundamental property of light, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon has elicited widespread interest. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the OAM conversion of light without any spin state can occur in homogeneous and isotropic medium when a specially tailored locally linearly polarized (STLLP) beam is strongly focused by a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens. Through a high NA objective lens, the STLLP beams can generate identical twin foci with tunable distance between them controlled by input state of polarization. Such process admits partial OAM conversion from linear state to conjugate OAM states, giving rise to helical phases with opposite directions for each focus of the longitudinal component in the focal field.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been adopted to measure the shape of static objects and the translation motion of moving objects in optical remote sensing. Most of these studies rely on measuring the intensity variation of OAM beams. However, the OAM intensity does not change with the rotation of the spinning object, but its phase changes. The phase variation is proved to be proportional to the object’s angular velocity. Since a rotating object will cause the OAM phase dependent on time, the OAM phase needs to be measured instantaneously, to support the OAM-based angular velocity measurement. In this work, we report a scheme to measure the angular velocity of a spinning object using a photonic OAM phase spectrum. A phase-to-intensity strategy is implemented to enable the real-time multi-OAM phase measurement, in which the phase can be determined with the intensities of four focal spots in a two-dimensional array generated by a phase-only spatial light modulator. The experimental results show that the average error of the measured angular velocity could be under 2.45% by detecting the phase of two OAM modes. This OAM-based angular velocity detection method provides a complementary approach to characterize the rotational Doppler effect, especially for slow angular motion.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics with structured light can provide a host of important functions for shaping the spatial and temporal structure of light, and the most commonly used is frequency conversion. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a novel nonlinear toolkit capable of tuning the frequency and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of signal beams simultaneously, and importantly that does not change the spatial amplitude structure of the signal. This unique frequency interface is enabled by using a special structured pump called a vortex super-Gaussian beam that has a flattop amplitude distribution and tunable vortex wavefront. This technique provides a dual interface of frequency and OAM, and may inspire many potential applications involving OAM beams.
