Abstract:As a non-invasive imaging technique, Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) aims to reconstruct the electrical conductivity distribution image in the observation field. However, the low spatial resolution restricts the development of EIT. In some specific applications, the conductivity variations are concentrated in a sub-region of the entire observation field. In response to the above problems, a design method of EIT computational focusing sensor is proposed to improve the spatial resolution in the partial region of interest (ROI). According to the conformal transformation theory, the sensor array is optimized to improve the sensitivity within the ROI to enhance the imaging accuracy in the local area. Simulation and experiment analyses are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results are compared with the conventional uniform sensor. The quality of image reconstruction is evaluated by qualitative analysis and quantitative indicators. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed optimized sensor can obtain the high precision reconstruction of inclusions in ROI and has higher recognition ability for small size and close distance inclusions in ROI than the uniform electrode array.

Abstract:This work focuses on the modeling and the optimal design of a new kind of ERT sensor, capacitively coupled ERT (CCERT). A 2D mathematical model of CCERT is developed and the simulation program is designed by Finite Element Method (FEM). Then, the influence of three main parameters (the permittivity of the pipe wall, the thickness of the pipe wall and the sensor electrode angle) on the measurement performance of CCERT sensor is studied by simulation. By the simulation results, the optimization criteria of CCERT sensor are the higher permittivity of the pipe wall, smaller thickness of the pipe wall and larger sensor electrode angles. Finally, an optimized CCERT sensor prototype is developed and its sensitivity field is obtained by FEM. Meanwhile, practical image reconstruction experiments are also carried out to verify the effectiveness of the simulation results and the optimization criteria. The experiment results show that the developed model and the simulation results are effective and the sensitivity field of the CCERT sensor is practical. The experiment results also indicate that the developed prototype of the CCERT system is successful and the quality of the reconstructed images is satisfactory.

Abstract:This work focuses on the development of a wideband contactless electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system. The system is developed from the aspects of the multifrequency capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) hardware, the impedance calculation model and the system evaluation. The hardware includes a 12-electrode CCEIT sensor, 6 sensing modules, a data acquisition module, and a personal computer (PC). The impedance calculation model is established by combining the mechanism modeling of the integrated circuits (ICs) and the empirical modeling of the measurement data with the least squares (LS) method. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the developed system, including the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the impedance measurement accuracy and the imaging performance. Experimental results show that the system achieves an SNR above 65.00 dB for the frequencies up to 20 MHz. Impedance measurement results indicate that the system has good impedance measurement accuracy at frequencies below 10 MHz and acceptable impedance measurement accuracy at 10 MHz - 20 MHz. It has particularly good performance at several specific frequencies, which can also serve as a high-performance single-frequency contactless EIT device. Imaging results show that the spectroscopic images reconstructed by the developed system are consistent with the actual distributions. Few types of research on contactless multifrequency EIT systems have been reported. So, this work is of great significance for further development and practical application of the newly emerged contactless EIT technique.

Abstract:Capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) is an attractive improvement of electrical resistance tomography (ERT) that offers contactless measurement and utilizes both the real and imaginary parts of the impedance for monitoring conductive gas-liquid two-phase flows in the industry. The conventional CCEIT adopts the finite element method under the benchmark of conductive liquid background to obtain the sensitivity matrices, which has been validated effective in ERT for the usage of the real part information. However, few researches on the usage of the imaginary part information of the conductive fluid have been reported. More research work should be undertaken to seek the most effective sensitivity calculation benchmark for the imaginary part utilization in CCEIT. In this work, the usage of the imaginary part information under different sensitivity calculation benchmarks is studied and a new image reconstruction strategy is proposed for CCEIT. By comparing the imaginary part sensitivity matrices and the corresponding imaging performance under different backgrounds, the benchmark that can make better use of the imaginary part information is determined. With the determined benchmark, a new image reconstruction strategy of CCEIT, which utilizes the respective effective benchmarks for the image reconstruction of the two parts of the fluid impedance, and employs a novel hybrid image fusion method to obtain the final image, is presented. Research results show that the benchmark of non-conductive gas background is more effective for the usage of the imaginary part information of the conductive gas-liquid two-phase flow. And the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in obtaining high-quality images. Compared with the conventional image reconstruction strategy of CCEIT, the proposed strategy has better imaging performance. This research provides valuable experience in utilizing the imaginary part information of the fluid impedance and lays a good foundation for the further development of CCEIT.

Abstract:Capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) is a contactless improvement of electrical resistance tomography (ERT) that uses both the real and imaginary parts of the impedance. To make better use of the two parts, a novel joint image reconstruction method with structural grouping guidance for CCEIT is proposed in this work. The method presents a fusion-while-reconstruction approach to implement data fusion of the real part information and imaginary part information during image reconstruction. A joint reconstruction model is developed from two aspects, including the joint reconstruction of the impedance and the structural grouping guidance. The first aspect implements the simultaneous utilization of the two parts during image reconstruction and considers their different contributions to the reconstruction. The second aspect introduces the grouping information of the gas-liquid two-phase flow and designs a structural grouping term by group least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). With the developed model, the proximal gradient descent (PGD) algorithm is employed to realize the joint image reconstruction and obtain the reconstructed image. Experiments were carried out with a 12-electrode CCEIT system. The results verified the effectiveness of the proposed joint image reconstruction method. Compared with the conventional method which adopts the fusion-after-reconstruction approach by image fusion, the proposed method has better imaging performance and higher reconstruction efficiency. In addition, the structural grouping guidance is effective in reducing the image artifacts and further improving the image quality.
Study on Dual-Frequency Imaging of Capacitively Coupled Electrical Impedance Tomography: Frequency Optimization

Abstract:In this work, a new dual-frequency imaging framework of capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) is presented. Unlike conventional single-frequency imaging and recently emerged multifrequency imaging, the dual-frequency imaging adopts two different working frequencies to obtain the real part and the imaginary part of the impedance, respectively. With the real part image and the imaginary part image reconstructed at the two frequencies, the framework further introduces image fusion to obtain the fused image. To achieve the optimal selection of the two frequencies, data collection in a wide frequency range is carried out with a 12-electrode CCEIT sensor, an impedance analyzer, and a computer to obtain the real part and the imaginary part measurements. The multifrequency data are then analyzed in depth, and other two aspects, including the sensitivity distribution and the imaging quality at different frequencies, are also investigated. Research results show that a low working frequency is recommended for the real part, while a relatively high working frequency is recommended for the imaginary part. Within the investigated frequency range of 200 kHz–20 MHz, the working frequencies for the real part and the imaginary part are optimized under the investigated distribution setups. Results of verification experiment show that the proposed framework is effective. Compared with single-frequency CCEIT, dual-frequency CCEIT with the two optimized frequencies has much better imaging performance.

Abstract:Based on linear back projection (LBP) algorithm, density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm and image fusion technique, a new image reconstruction method of capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) is proposed in this work. LBP is used to obtain the original image of the real part and the original image of the imaginary part. The gray level thresholds of the two original images are determined by DBSCAN clustering algorithm and the initial image of the real part and the initial image of the imaginary part are obtained by gray level threshold filtering, respectively. Finally, the two initial images are fused and the final image is obtained. Image reconstruction experiments are carried out with a 12-electrode CCEIT system prototype. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed image reconstruction method. Experimental results show that the quality of the final image is satisfactory. Compared with the conventional electrical tomography (ET) image reconstruction methods, the new proposed image reconstruction method needs less prior knowledge or manual intervention and realizes more effective usage of the impedance information. The research results also indicate that the DBSCAN clustering algorithm is an effective way to determine the gray level thresholds of the original images and the mean square error (MSE) is a reasonable criterion for image fusion. Meanwhile, LBP + DBSCAN is an effective algorithm for image reconstruction and image fusion technique is an effective way to utilize the whole impedance information of the conductive gas–liquid two-phase flow.

Abstract:The optimization for sensor structure of capacitively coupled electrical resistance tomography(CCERT)is presented.The model of the 12-electrode sensor of CCERT has been established by finite element simulation software firstly,and sensitivity field has been calculated for the reconstruction of image.Then the finite element model is verified by comparing the simulation data and reconstructed image with that of experiment respectively.The result shows that the model is reasonable.The effect on the measurement data is studied by simulation for two different models of sensor.Finally,the optimum size of the screen of CCERT sensor is proposed with the minimum influence on the measurements based on the final sensor model discussed previously.The study can provide useful instruction for the design of CCERT sensor.

Abstract:Capacitively Coupled Electrical Resistance Tomography (CCERT), which is on the basis of Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection (C4D), is a novel electrical tomography technique. As a developing technique, more research work should be undertaken. This work focuses on the study of image reconstruction algorithm of CCERT. Combining Tikhonov regularization principle and Simultaneous Iterative Reconstruction Technique (SIRT), a new hybrid image reconstruction algorithm is proposed. Tikhonov regularization is introduced to obtain the initial reconstructed image. SIRT is used to obtain the final reconstructed image. With a 12-electrode CCERT prototype, image reconstruction experiments are carried out. Experimental results show that the images reconstructed by the proposed image reconstruction algorithm are satisfactory and are in accord with the actual distributions of two-phase flows. The research work also indicates that the proposed image reconstruction algorithm is more suitable for image reconstruction of CCERT, comparing with the conventional image reconstruction algorithms of Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) and Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT).
Image Reconstruction in Open-EIT by Combining Inversion Mapping and Sparse Contour Representation

Abstract:This article presents an image reconstruction method for open electrical impedance tomography (OEIT) combined with inversion mapping and contour representation to address the profile and medium distribution measurement requirements of adhesion cavitation. Electrodes are arranged on the surface of an axisymmetric blunt body to form the Open-EIT sensor. To guarantee the accuracy of forward modeling in image reconstruction, the infinite domain outside the sensor is transformed into a disk by an equivalent dedicated inversion mapping. Then, the cavity contour is obtained using a customized B-spline-based sparse reconstruction method. Finally, the medium distribution to be reconstructed is confined within the contour to improve the imaging speed and resolution, which is then mapped back to the original infinity domain. Theoretical analysis and simulation demonstrate that the forward model maintains physical consistency after the inversion mapping, and the detection sensitivity is nearly ten times higher than that before the mapping. Simulations and experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, where the contour and its inside distribution can be better reconstructed in each specified case compared to other typical methods. The aforementioned method establishes a viable and effective approach for monitoring the cavitation occurrence on the surface of underwater vehicles.

Abstract:In this article, a multicircle planar electrical impedance tomography (EIT) sensor is proposed for three-dimensional (3-D) miniature imaging. There are two problems in 3-D miniature EIT imaging: 1) the spatial resolution is low since the number of electrodes is limited and 2) contact impedance influences image reconstruction quality severely. The proposed EIT sensor made by a printed circuit board (PCB) adopts a multicircle structure and tackles the two problems. Driven electrodes are distributed on the outermost two circles, while measurement electrodes are distributed on the innermost circle. Contact impedance is reduced since the area of driven electrodes could be larger than traditional ones by using the multicircle structure, and it is also owning to gold that is deposited on the surface of the electrodes. Moreover, a new driven-measurement pattern of the EIT sensor is proposed to improve the spatial resolution as well as image reconstruction quality. The proposed EIT sensor is verified by both simulation and experiment. The average image correlation coefficient (ICC) is as high as 0.8475 in simulation. Compared with the 16-electrode EIT sensor, ICC is improved by 39.16%. In the experiment, the average ICC of four standard objects is 0.8389. The proposed 3-D EIT sensor is good at miniature imaging.

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a promising imaging technique that recovers the conductivity distribution inside a domain from noninvasive electrical measurements on the boundary. In this work, to accelerate the solving of EIT problems in arbitrarily shaped domains and with a large number of unknowns ( ), we propose a fast integral-equation-based inversion method. First, by applying the Schwarz–Christoffel (SC) conformal transformation, we map the arbitrarily shaped domain of an EIT problem to a rectangle, on which Green's function can be derived analytically in Fourier series representation. Leveraging such a mathematical structure of Green's function, we then propose a fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based algorithm to compute the multiplication of the associated impedance matrix with vectors, where the time complexity is substantially reduced from ( ) to ( ) and the memory complexity is reduced from ( ) to ( ). Using the contrast source inversion method along with the accelerated matrix–vector multiplications, the conductivity profile can be reconstructed much more efficiently in the rectangular transformation domain. As validated by numerical and experimental tests, the proposed FFT-- ccelerated transformation-domain EIT image reconstruction method can offer significantly reduced computational and memory complexity without sacrificing the image quality.

A Flexible Image-Guided Shape Reconstruction Framework for Electrical Impedance Tomography

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) owns the advantages of safety, high temporal resolution, and functional imaging characteristics, thus is considered a promising medical/industrial imaging modality. However, due to the ill-posedness of its inverse problem, the spatial resolution of EIT is low, which greatly impeded its practical applications. A flexible image-guided inclusion boundary reconstruction (IGBR) framework for EIT is proposed to alleviate the problem. A statistical inverse problem framework for IGBR is established to directly reconstruct the inclusion boundary and the corresponding conductivity distribution. The morphology prior information is extracted from the images obtained from other high-resolution modes and is used to guide the boundary reconstruction (BR) process in the form of a conditional probability model. A series of simulation and experimental studies are carried out for different application backgrounds. The lung EIT imaging guided by computerized tomography (CT) image and EIT inclusion detection guided by B-ultrasound image is simulated and analyzed, respectively. The results show that the proposed method has high applicability to prior images of different modes. It not only achieves high-precision shape reconstruction but also high-precision conductivity estimation under the guidance of accurate prior images. Meanwhile, the proposed method has high robustness to the possible influence of noise in prior images or incomplete structural information. Even if the information in the prior image is biased or incomplete, the proposed method can still achieve high precision boundary reconstruction and conductivity estimation. The results of quantitative analysis show that compared with the method without image prior, the proposed method has an average reduction of 70% in area error (AE), while the conductivity estimation error is reduced by about five times on average.

Simultaneous reconstruction of conductivity, boundary shape and contact impedances in electrical impedance tomography

Abstract:The objective of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is to reconstruct the internal conductivity of a physical body based on current and voltage measurements at the boundary of the body. In many medical applications the exact shape of the domain boundary and contact impedances are not available. This is problematic as even small errors in the boundary shape of the computation domain or in the contact impedance values can produce large artifacts in the reconstructed images which results in a loss of relevant information. A method is proposed that simultaneously reconstructs the conductivity, the contact impedances and the boundary shape from EIT data. The approach consists of three steps: first, the unknown contact impedances and an anisotropic conductivity reproducing the measured EIT data in a model domain are computed. Second, using isothermal coordinates, a deformation is constructed that makes the conductivity isotropic. The final step minimizes the error of true and reconstructed known geometric properties (like the electrode lengths) using conformal deformations. The feasibility of the method is illustrated with experimental EIT data, with robust and accurate reconstructions of both conductivity and boundary shape.

Abstract:This work proposes a novel shape-driven reconstruction approach for difference electrical impedance tomography (EIT). In the proposed approach, the reconstruction problem is formulated as a shape reconstruction problem and solved via an explicit and geometrical methodology, where the geometry of the embedded inclusions is represented by a shape and topology description function (STDF). To incorporate more geometry and prior information directly into the reconstruction and to provide better flexibility in the solution process, the concept of a moving morphable component (MMC) is applied here implying that MMC is treated as the basic building block of the embedded inclusions. Simulations, phantom studies, and in vivo pig data are used to test the proposed approach for the most popular biomedical application of EIT - lung imaging - and the performance is compared with the conventional linear approach. In addition, the modality's robustness is studied in cases where (i) modeling errors are caused by inhomogeneity in the background conductivity, and (ii) uncertainties in the contact impedances and reference state are present. The results of this work indicate that the proposed approach is tolerant to modeling errors and is fairly robust to typical EIT uncertainties, producing greatly improved image quality compared to the conventional linear approach.
CT Image-Guided Electrical Impedance Tomography for Medical Imaging.

Abstract:This study presents a computed tomography (CT) image-guided electrical impedance tomography (EIT) method for medical imaging. CT is a robust imaging modality for accurately reconstructing the density structure of the region being scanned. EIT can detect electrical impedance abnormalities to which CT scans may be insensitive, but the poor spatial resolution of EIT is a major concern for medical applications. A cross-gradient method has been introduced for oil and gas exploration to jointly invert multiple geophysical datasets associated with different medium properties in the same geological structure. In this study, we develop a CT image-guided EIT (CEIT) based on the cross-gradient method. We assume that both CT scanning and EIT imaging are conducted for the same medical target. A CT scan is first acquired to help solve the subsequent EIT imaging problem. During EIT imaging, we apply cross gradients between the CT image and the electrical conductivity distribution to iteratively constrain the conductivity inversion. The cross-gradient based method allows the mutual structures of different physical models to be referenced without directly affecting the polarity and amplitude of each model during the inversion. We apply the CEIT method to both numerical simulations and phantom experiments. The effectiveness of CEIT is demonstrated in comparison with conventional EIT. The comparison shows that the CEIT method can significantly improve the quality of conductivity images.
Optimal distance of multi-plane sensor in three-dimensional electrical impedance tomography

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a visual imaging technique for obtaining the conductivity and permittivity distributions in the domain of interest. As an advanced technique, EIT has the potential to be a valuable tool for continuously bedside monitoring of pulmonary function. The EIT applications in any three-dimensional (3 D) field are very limited to the 3 D effects, i.e. the distribution of electric field spreads far beyond the electrode plane. The 3 D effects can result in measurement errors and image distortion. An important way to overcome the 3 D effect is to use the multiple groups of sensors. The aim of this paper is to find the best space resolution of EIT image over various electrode planes and select an optimal plane spacing in a 3 D EIT sensor, and provide guidance for 3 D EIT electrodes placement in monitoring lung function. In simulation and experiment, several typical conductivity distribution models, such as one rod (central, midway and edge), two rods and three rods, are set at different plane spacings between the two electrode planes. A Tikhonov regularization algorithm is utilized for reconstructing the images; the relative error and the correlation coefficient are utilized for evaluating the image quality. Based on numerical simulation and experimental results, the image performance at different spacing conditions is evaluated. The results demonstrate that there exists an optimal plane spacing between the two electrode planes for 3 D EIT sensor. Abstract:Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is an imaging modality which currently shows promise for the detection and characterization of breast cancer. A very significant problem in EIT imaging is the proper modeling of the interface between the body and the electrodes. We have found empirically that it is very difficult, in a clinical setting, to assure that all electrodes make satisfactory contact with the body. In addition, we have observed a capacitive effect at skin/electrode boundary that is spatially heterogeneous. To compensate for these problems, we have developed a hybrid nonlinear-linear reconstruction algorithm in which we first estimate electrode surface impedances, using a Newton-type iterative optimization procedure with an analytically computed Jacobian matrix. We subsequently make use of a linearized algorithm to perform a three-dimensional reconstruction of perturbations in both contact impedances and in the spatial distributions of conductivity and permittivity. Results show that, using this procedure, artifacts due to electrodes making poor contact can be greatly reduced.

Abstract:Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) is a technique to visualize the permittivity distribution inside a domain from the interelectrode mutual capacitances on the domain boundary. The potential applications of ECT in nondestructive testing (NDT) depend on accurate and stable image reconstruction. To improve image quality, this article presents a reconstruction framework with the sparse representation of phase boundaries in two-phase distributions. By adopting a sparsity-promoting basis, i.e., radial basis functions, the reconstruction problem is transformed into searching for the optimal phase boundaries and real-permittivity values of inclusions by formulating an optimization problem accordingly. This can reduce the number of unknowns significantly and has a strong ability to accommodate to the topology changes of inclusion geometries, which can improve the reconstruction accuracy and robustness. Both simulation and phantom experiments are performed to investigate the reconstruction performance, especially regarding the antinoise ability and robustness against choices of model parameters. Compared with typical conventional methods, our method can not only provide significantly improved image quality but also accurately estimate the real-permittivity values of inclusions. This would enable ECT to be applied in challenging NDT applications.

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a noninvasive technique estimating the conductivity inside an observation domain from its peripheral measurements and owns many industrial and biomedical applications. Inclusion reconstruction is one of the key problems in EIT. However, the high-resolution inclusion reconstruction is challenging due to the ill-posedness and nonlinearity of EIT. The shape reconstruction methods focusing on recovering the shape of the inclusion is one kind of advanced methods to enhance the EIT resolution. To achieve high-performance shape reconstruction, a parametric geometric constraint boundary reconstruction (PGCBR) framework is proposed. The shape reconstruction is implemented by minimizing the energy function of the inclusion boundary represented by the parametric snake model. To accelerate the convergence, the Newton method is adopted to solve the energy minimization problem. The first- and second-order partial derivatives of the energy terms are calculated with the EIT shape sensitivity formula. A series of numerical tests evaluated the influences of the key factors, e.g., the basis function and the number of the knot and interpolating points, of PGCBR on its reconstruction performance and proved its robustness against the measurement noise. The following experimental tests, including both single- and multiphase conductivity cases, further proved the advantages of PGCBR over the nonparametric method.
