Abstract:This work presents a decentralized formation control approach for a heterogeneous multi-robot system including a team of nonholonomic unmanned ground vehicles and an unmanned aerial vehicle based on visual localization. Relying only on the visual information from the onboard camera mounted on the unmanned aerial vehicle, the unmanned ground vehicle team can be controlled in a desired formation with the flying drone. A gradient-based control law is designed, in which the formation producing, collision avoidance and field of view constraint have been considered comprehensively. Finally, the performance and validness of the developed method are verified through simulations.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology, their assigned missions have become significantly more intricate. Individual UAVs are no longer sufficient to meet these diverse and demanding requirements. There is now a shift towards employing multiple UAVs operating collaboratively to address complex tasks, replacing the reliance on singular units. This study focuses on the complexities of coordinated flight within UAV formations. A dynamic consensus optimal control algorithm is proposed for distributed formations, grounded in optimal control theory. Furthermore, the enhanced control method is validated via simulation on a semi-physical visualization platform, effectively closing the gap between real-world formation requirements and simulation outcomes. The results from these simulations underscore that the proposed method effectively preserves UAV formation integrity and demonstrates exceptional applicability in real-world scenarios.
Formation Control of Multi-UAV Systems with Time and Angle Constraints

Abstract:This study addresses the formation control problem of multiple fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in three dimensions, taking into account assembly time and angle constraints. A novel control strategy is proposed, which divides the system into two modules. The first module, known as the assembly stage, assembles the UAV swarm and creates a fundamental formation from arbitrary initial states. Each UAV is required to reach the designated site while considering the terminal constraints regarding both time and angles. Novel sliding manifolds have been developed, and corresponding control laws are proposed to meet the constraints in the assembly stage. The Lyapunov stability theory is employed to prove that the proposed control laws guarantee a fixed-time stable system. The second module, referred to as the formation-keeping stage, is responsible for precisely maintaining the UAV swarm’s geometric pattern. The study proposes a sliding mode control (SMC) law that uses the traditional proportional navigation guidance (PNG) for followers to trace the relative trajectories of a predetermined central leader in a leader-follower structure. Finally, numerical simulation results are presented to demonstrate the successful implementation of the proposed approach. Compared to the two other methods, our proposed approach not only satisfies the constraints but also exhibits a higher level of distance accuracy. In precise terms, our method achieves a reduction in the average distance error of 73% and 87%, respectively, when compared to the previous two methods.

Abstract:With the development of technologies related to unmanned vehicles, including unmanned aerial vehicle and unmanned surface vehicle, unmanned vehicles play a pivotal role in maritime management and cruise activities. Meanwhile, lots of evidence shows that a single unmanned vehicle is not qualified for operation under complex environment, whereas the unmanned aerial vehicle–unmanned surface vehicle formation consists of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned surface vehicles, which can enhance the performance of the single unmanned vehicle significantly. However, the cooperative operation performance of the unmanned aerial vehicle–unmanned surface vehicle formation is constrained by its communication capacity. Consequently, a cooperative communication framework is designed for the unmanned aerial vehicle–unmanned surface vehicle formation. A distributed dynamic network topology is constructed for fulfilling effective communication for the unmanned aerial vehicle–unmanned surface vehicle formation based on ad hoc network. Experiments are carried out by employing the built unmanned aerial vehicle–unmanned surface vehicle formation platform. Results verify the superiority of the designed cooperative communication framework for the unmanned aerial vehicle–unmanned surface vehicle formation.

Abstract:Under the condition of satisfying certain communication topology, a multi-agent formation control algorithm based on the speed and direction of single-agent is proposed. For the situation that multi-agent communication system is vulnerable to external interference. Firstly, an agent guidance law is designed so that the speed direction of the robot can gradually converge to the desired direction during the motion. Secondly, in the last stage of motion, the agent realizes the cooperative control through the effective communication, so that the multi-agent can reach the target point at the same time with meeting the speed and direction constraints. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel hybrid strategy for formation control of a swarm of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To enhance the fitness function of the formation, this research offers a three-dimensional formation control for a swarm using particle swarm optimization (PSO) with Cauchy mutant (CM) operators. We use CM operators to enhance the PSO algorithm by examining the varying fitness levels of the local and global optimal solutions for UAV formation control. We establish the terrain and the fixed-wing UAV model. Furthermore, it also models different control parameters of the UAV as well. The enhanced hybrid algorithm not only quickens the convergence rate but also improves the solution optimality. Lastly, we carry out the simulations for the multi-UAV swarm under terrain and radar threats and the simulation results prove that the hybrid method is effective and gives better fitness function.

Abstract:This article addresses the data-driven robust optimal formation control of heterogeneous vehicles in air–ground coordination. The position and heading references for the quadrotor vehicles and the unmanned ground vehicles are generated through only the local information of themselves and their neighbors. Based on these generated references, a robust formation controller is constructed for the heterogeneous team to achieve the position formation with heading synchronization. Based on reinforcement learning theory, an optimal formation controller for the heterogeneous agents is learned without knowledge of the agent dynamics. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed formation control approach.

Abstract:This paper reports on the formation and transformation of multiple fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in three-dimensional space. A cooperative guidance law based on the classic missile-type parallel-approach method is designed for the multi-UAV formation control problem. Additionally, formation transformation strategies for multi-UAV autonomous assembly, disbandment, and special circumstances are formed, effective for managing and controlling the formation. When formulating the management strategy for formation establishment, its process is divided into three steps: (i) selecting and allocating target points, (ii) forming loose formations, and (iii) forming short-range formations. The management of disbanding the formation is formulated through reverse thinking: the assembly process is split and recombined in reverse, and a formation disbanding strategy that can achieve a smooth transition from close to lose formation is proposed. Additionally, a strategy is given for adjusting the formation transformation in special cases, and the formation adjustment is completed using the adjacency matrix. Finally, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation and measured flight verification using a simulator show the practicality of the guidance law in meeting the control requirements of UAV formation flight for specific flight tasks.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation has been widely applied in various aspects, both for military and civil purposes. In this paper, multiple UAV formations are deployed to perform different types of tasks, and the heterogeneous mission planning problem is studied. The problem is divided into two subproblems, i.e., task assignment and path planning. First, the task assignment is formulated into a combinatorial optimization problem. Different from the existing studies, appropriate UAVs need to be selected to build the formation and perform specific types of tasks. To obtain the task assignment scheme, a hybrid genetic and simulated annealing (HGSA) algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm, a feasible solution is guaranteed by the designed task-based strategy, and the diversity of solutions is ensured by the group-based solution remaining (GBSR) approach. In the path planning problem, an obstacle avoidance-enabled consensus (OAEC) algorithm is developed to form the UAV formation, which extends the application of the standard consensus algorithm. A multi-step particle swarm optimization (MPSO) algorithm is combined with the consensus algorithm to generate a path for the UAV formation to reach each task point. The conflict among multiple UAV formations is resolved by adjusting their departure time. Furthermore, the task assignment scheme is modified by utilizing real path information on the flying distance between the UAVs and the task points. The simulation results demonstrate that the HGSA algorithm can build the UAV formations and assign the tasks to them while satisfying all the complicated constraints. The advantages of the OAEC algorithm and the MPSO algorithm in path planning are verified by comparison with relevant algorithms.

Abstract:This paper deals with the formation control problem of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The UAV models are considered highly nonlinear and only translational motion is considered. Zeroing dynamics was first adopted to tackle the position and velocity consensus and then extended to the application of formation control using a constant offset vector. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm was analyzed and simulation results of four UAVs' formation flying were shown to validate the effectiveness of the proposed formation control law.

Abstract:Within the context of ground-air cooperation, the distributed formation trajectory tracking control problems for the Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems (HMASs) is studied. First, considering external disturbances and model uncertainties, a graph theory-based formation control protocol is designed for the HMASs consisting of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs). Subsequently, a formation trajectory tracking control strategy employing adaptive Fractional-Order Sliding Mode Control (FOSMC) method is developed, and a Feedback Multilayer Fuzzy Neural Network (FMFNN) is introduced to estimate the lumped uncertainties. This approach empowers HMASs to adaptively follow the expected trajectory and adopt the designated formation configuration, even in the presence of various uncertainties. Additionally, an event-triggered mechanism is incorporated into the controller to reduce the update frequency of the controller and minimize the communication exchange among the agents, and the absence of Zeno behavior is rigorously demonstrated by an integral inequality analysis. Finally, to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed formation control protocol, some numerical simulations are presented.

Abstract:The multifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) represents a significant technological advance. Results of 671 patients with a year follow-up from a worldwide study are presented. Through this FDA study, it appears that many patients can enjoy uncompromising distance vision as well as unaided near vision. With careful surgical control of astigmatism and competent calculation of IOL power, it may be possible to reduce the post-cataract patients' dependency on glasses.

Abstract:This paper studies the formation control for a time-delayed discrete-time multi-agent system (MAS). An event-triggered controller is proposed to reduce the communication load of the system. Based on the designed event-triggered condition and properties of Schur stable matrix, the stability of formation for discrete-time MAS is proved. Utilizing the virtual simulation platform integrated Robot Operating System (ROS) and Gazebo, a virtual scene with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) models is built and the verification for the theoretical algorithm is completed. Finally, an experimental platform with four practical UAVs is constructed and the result shows that the expected formation is achieved and controller proposed can solve the formation control problem for time-delayed discrete-time MASs. Besides, the effectiveness of the event-triggered mechanism on reducing communication frequency is comfirmed in practical scenarios.

Abstract:This paper considers a multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) formation problem and proposes a new method inspired by bird flocking and foraging behavior. A bidirectional communication network, a navigator based on bird foraging behavior, a controller based on bird interaction and a movement switch are developed for multi-UAV formation. Lyapunov′s second method and mechanical energy method are adopted for stability analysis. Parameters of the controller are optimized by Levy-flight based pigeon inspired optimization (Levy-PIO). Patrol missions along a square and an S shaped trajectory are designed to test this formation method. Simulations prove that the bird flocking and foraging strategy can accomplish the mission and obtain satisfying performance.

Abstract:Abstract Multi-agent system is an important branch of distributed artificial intelligence. As a new field of engineering control science, it has developed vigorously in recent years. From a practical point of view, most existing agents, such as unmanned vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles, are powered by mobile power supply. Therefore, it is of practical significance to consider the battery state and explore how to improve the overall battery life when designing the multi-agent control strategy. In this paper, we first introduced a classical algorithm based on the consensus theory, and on this basis, the overtaking action in the formation is realized by changing the topology, so as to simulate the individuals (action individuals) who consume more energy in the formation; then we discussed how to improve the endurance of high-energy-consuming individuals in formation through average energy consumption in strategy design, and proposed an algorithm based on energy-aware. Finally, the MATLAB simulation results show that compared with the classical algorithm, the proposed algorithm can improve the endurance of formation.

Abstract:SUMMARY The increasing deployment of multiple unmanned vehicles systems has generated large research interest in recent decades. This paper therefore provides a detailed survey to review a range of techniques related to the operation of multi-vehicle systems in different environmental domains, including land based, aerospace and marine with the specific focuses placed on formation control and cooperative motion planning. Differing from other related papers, this paper pays a special attention to the collision avoidance problem and specifically discusses and reviews those methods that adopt flexible formation shape to achieve collision avoidance for multi-vehicle systems. In the conclusions, some open research areas with suggested technologies have been proposed to facilitate the future research development.

Abstract:The formation control of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (multi-UAVs) has always been a research hotspot. Based on the straight line trajectory, a multi-UAVs target point assignment algorithm based on the assignment probability is proposed to achieve the shortest overall formation path of multi-UAVs with low complexity and reduce the energy consumption. In order to avoid the collision between UAVs in the formation process, the concept of safety ball is introduced, and the collision detection based on continuous motion of two time slots and the lane occupation detection after motion is proposed to avoid collision between UAVs. Based on the idea of game theory, a method of UAV motion form setting based on the maximization of interests is proposed, including the maximization of self-interest and the maximization of formation interest is proposed, so that multi-UAVs can complete the formation task quickly and reasonably with the linear trajectory assigned in advance. Finally, through simulation verification, the multi-UAVs target assignment algorithm based on the assignment probability proposed in this paper can effectively reduce the total path length, and the UAV motion selection method based on the maximization interests can effectively complete the task formation.

Abstract:The formation of multiple Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) is an effective way to extend the capabilities of a single USV to satisfy relatively complex tasks in practice. In this study, we proposed a formation-strategy-based deep reinforcement learning method called Multi-agent Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) to realize multi-USV formation. In this work, Line of Sight (LOS) guidance is integrated into the formation strategy under a leader-follower scheme. With the advantage of ignoring the dynamic model of the USV, the proposed formation strategy has strong migration potential to be transferred to other multi-agent systems. To evaluate the performance of the multi-USV formation, we designed two different scenarios in line with the practical tasks carried out with the multi-USV system covering observation aperture enhancement with the desired formation and dynamic non-cooperative target roundup. The performance of the proposed multi-USV formation strategy was demonstrated in both a simulation environment and a real-world environment. Compared with other deep reinforcement learning-inspired and traditional approaches, our proposed strategy based on MADDPG achieved a higher task success rate. It also outperformed the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) in other metrics because it can acquire knowledge more effectively from dynamic environments by observing joint information and from the centralized training.

Abstract:A Multi-Agent System(MAS) consensus based algorithm is proposed for Multi-UAVs to maintain a specified time-varying geometric configuration for formation flight in 3-D space. Use decoupling characteristics in altitude control of Multi-UAVs, formation problem in 3-D space, was decomposed altitude control and plane control. In this approach, the proposed control strategy requires only the local neighbor-to-neighbor information between vehicles. Speed, heading angle. Then height synchronization is realized and the 3-D space formation flight can be achieved, and formation transform was investigated. The simulation results show that, this method has good robustness and scalability, simple calculation and a small amount of communication, and make the formation in 3-D space become easy to implement. © 2005 - 2013 JATIT & LLS.

Abstract:This paper investigates the formation control problem of multi-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems with multi-operating modes. While mode switching enhances the flexibility of multi-UAV systems, it also introduces dynamic model switching behaviors in UAVs. Moreover, obtaining an accurate dynamic model for a multi-UAV system is challenging in practice. In addition, communication link failures and time-varying unknown disturbances are inevitable in multi-UAV systems. Hence, to overcome the adverse effects of the above challenges, a hybrid iterative learning formation control strategy is proposed in this paper. The proposed controller does not rely on precise modeling and exhibits its learning ability by utilizing historical input–output data to update the current control input. Furthermore, two convergence theorems are proven to guarantee the convergence of state, disturbance estimation, and formation tracking errors. Finally, three simulation examples are conducted for a multi-UAV system consisting of four quadrotor UAVs under multi-operating modes, switching topologies, and external disturbances. The results of the simulations show the strategy’s effectiveness and superiority in achieving the desired formation control objectives.
