Abstract:Developing robust nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts with high activity towards sluggish oxygen-evolution reaction is paramount for large-scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting. Here we report that self-supported laminate composite electrodes composed of alternating nanoporous bimetallic iron-cobalt alloy/oxyhydroxide and cerium oxynitride (FeCo/CeO 2− x N x ) heterolamellas hold great promise as highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline oxygen-evolution reaction. By virtue of three-dimensional nanoporous architecture to offer abundant and accessible electroactive CoFeOOH/CeO 2− x N x heterostructure interfaces through facilitating electron transfer and mass transport, nanoporous FeCo/CeO 2− x N x composite electrodes exhibit superior oxygen-evolution electrocatalysis in 1 M KOH, with ultralow Tafel slope of ~33 mV dec −1 . At overpotential of as low as 360 mV, they reach >3900 mA cm −2 and retain exceptional stability at ~1900 mA cm −2 for >1000 h, outperforming commercial RuO 2 and some representative oxygen-evolution-reaction catalysts recently reported. These electrochemical properties make them attractive candidates as oxygen-evolution-reaction electrocatalysts in electrolysis of water for large-scale hydrogen generation.

Abstract:Water electrolyzers, such as proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEM) and anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEM) are important technologies for sustainable electrochemical energy conversion. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode is a pivotal half-reaction in these systems. Despite substantial progress over the years, OER kinetics remain a major source of inefficiency in these devices, necessitating the development of stable catalysts. Currently, precious metal-based catalysts dominate the landscape of OER catalysts for these devices. As non-precious alternatives, nickel-iron (Ni/Fe) catalysts have emerged as particularly promising in alkaline conditions. However, they exhibit dynamic behavior during electrocatalysis—for instance, oxidizing to an active oxyhydroxide phase during the OER. This dynamic nature makes it challenging to establish clear structure-activity-stability relationships. Incorporating cobalt (Co) into the catalyst composition has been found to influence the activity and material conversion of mixed Ni-Fe-Co oxides and (oxy)hydroxides. Methods for rationally activating and stabilizing Ni-Fe-based catalysts via electrochemical and chemical (e.g. composition) routes are necessary for enhancing scalability and accessibility in hydrogen production devices. Herein, our goal is to understand and exploit activation protocols to enhance the OER performance of as-synthesized nickel-iron-cobalt metal thin films, addressing three primary objectives: synthesizing and characterizing homogeneous metal catalysts, investigating the impact of different potential ranges and scan rates on catalyst oxidation and surface conversion from the metal, and assessing how the addition of cobalt influences conversion rates and current density of the catalyst. We use cyclic voltammetry to facilitate and disentangle conversion (integrated reductive peak for Ni and/or Co 2+ → 3+ transition) and OER performance (current density (mA cm -2 ) at η = 350 mV). For all compositions tested of (Ni 80 Fe 20 ) 100-x Co x , x = 0 - 5 % we observe that the most effective conversion requires both redox and oxygen evolution. To further investigate the relationship between conversion and performance catalysts were tested in varying electrolytes such as 1M KOH, 0.1M KOH, and an ionomer overlayer to understand how these impacted conversion. Subsequently, post-analysis techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) were conducted to gain insights into the surface composition and elemental distribution of the catalysts following potential cycling. Additionally, electrochemical mass spectrometry (EC-MS) was employed to quantify the faradaic efficiency of oxygen, providing an understanding of at what point the catalyst begins converting and how much of the OER current is directed towards OER versus metal conversion. This project advances the fundamental understanding of NiFeCo catalyst conversion, shedding light on the critical role of catalyst composition and investigating the conditions that foster optimal conversion efficiency. The use of physical vapor deposition for thin film catalysts offers distinct advantages, making deposition and scaling processes facile. This capability, coupled with the gained insights into conversion dynamics, sets the stage for in situ optimization of the surface to achieve the active oxyhydroxide phase with the highest performance for AEM water electrolysis.

Abstract:One of the key challenges to develop efficient water electrolysis system is to find effective and robust electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Mixed transition metal oxides provide immense possibilities for such purpose. 1 , 2 Abundant catalytically active sites could be generated via engineering the defects and oxygen vacancies within the transition metal oxides. 3 The catalyst stability could also be improved by incorporating self-healing component into the catalysts . 4 In this work, we adopt cobalt oxides as substrate materials to prepare mixed transition metal oxides. The catalysts are synthesized via a combined approach of hydrothermal and annealing processes. The final products are characterized thoroughly by a broad range of characterization techniques, including XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and XPS. The OER activities are initially evaluated in a three-electrode system. The results show that the as-prepared catalysts demonstrate high current density at a relatively low overpotential. Moreover, the catalysts exhibit excellent robustness for an 8-hours stability test in a three-electrode testing system. The stability and activity of the catalysts is further assessed in a lab-scale anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser cell setup. Only a small degradation is observed for the best performing catalyst in 12 hours period. The details of the catalyst characterization and electrochemical measurements will be discussed. Boosting oxygen evolution reaction by FeNi hydroxide-organic framework electrocatalyst toward alkaline water electrolyzer

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction plays a vital role in modern energy conversion and storage, and developing cost-efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalysts with industrially relevant activity and durability is highly desired but still challenging. Here, we report an efficient and durable FeNi hydroxide organic framework nanosheet array catalyst that competently affords long-term oxygen evolution reaction at industrial-grade current densities in alkaline electrolyte. The desirable high-intensity performance is attributed to three aspects as follows. First, two-dimensional nanosheet porous arrays with maximum specific surface facilitate mass/charge transfer to accommodate high-current-density catalysis. Second, in situ derived FeNi hydroxide motifs offer bimetallic synergistic catalysis centers with high intrinsic activity. Third, carboxyl ligands alleviate metal oxidation favorable for charge tolerability against peroxidation dissolution under strong polarization. As a result, this catalyst requires an overpotential of only 280 mV to deliver high current density up to 1 A/cm2 with long durability over 1000 h. Moreover, an alkaline water electrolyzer with this catalyst alternative demonstrates an increased economic effectiveness compared to commercial levels at present.
High-Entropy Alloy Catalysts of FeCoNiCuMo/C with High Stability for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:In recent years, high-entropy alloy materials have garnered widespread attention in the field of water electrolysis catalysts, owing to their exceptional electrochemical performance. However, synthesizing efficient and highly stable catalysts remains a formidable challenge. This study presents the preparation of a highly stable FeCoNiCuMo/C high-entropy alloy catalyst, exhibiting an overpotential of 324 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in a 1.0 M KOH solution, comparable to commercial RuO 2 . The Tafel slope reaches 70.5 mV·dec −1 , and the charge transfer resistance is only 3.6Ω, demonstrating outstanding electrochemical performance. Furthermore, stability tests conducted over 48 hours indicate the excellent stability of the prepared high-entropy alloy catalyst, with only a slight deviation observed after 5000 cycles of accelerated durability experiments. Theoretical calculations show that due to lattice distortion and cocktail effect, the d-band center of FeCoNiCuMo/C moves away from the Fermi surface compared to the pure component, which attenuates the adsorption of the reaction intermediates and leads to a significant decrease in the oxygen evolution reaction overpotential. This study validates the potential for long-term, efficient, and stable operation of high-entropy alloys as water electrolysis catalysts, providing experimental support for expanding the application scope of HEA.

Abstract:Developing high-performing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts under high-current operation conditions is critical for future commercial applications of alkaline water electrolysis for clean energy generation. Herein, we prepared a three-dimensional (3D) bimetallic oxyhydroxide hybrid grown on a Ni foam (NiFeOOH/NF) prepared by immersing Ni foam (NF) into Fe(NO3)3 solution. In this unique 3D structure, the NiFeOOH/NF hybrid was composed of crystalline Ni(OH)2 and amorphous FeOOH evenly grown on the NF surface. As a bimetallic oxyhydroxide electrocatalyst, the NiFeOOH/NF hybrid exhibited excellent catalytic activity, surpassing not only the other reported Ni–Fe based electrocatalysts, but also the commercial Ir/C catalyst. In situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy demonstrated the active FeOOH and NiOOH phases involved in the OER process. Profiting from the synergy of Fe and Ni catalytic sites, the NiFeOOH/NF hybrid delivered an outstanding OER performance under challenging industrial conditions in a 10.0 mol∙L−1 KOH electrolyte at 80 °C, requiring potentials as small as 1.47 and 1.51 V to achieve the super-high catalytic current densities of 100 and 500 mA∙cm–2, respectively.

Abstract:The development of low-cost non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts that can work stably at high current densities is crucial to apply a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrolyzed water. This study developed a freestanding nanoporous high-entropy alloy foil as a dual-functional electrocatalyst. The proposed electrocatalyst combines dealloying and polarization and shows excellent electrocatalytic activity in an alkaline electrolyte. It has an extremely small overpotential of 150 mV at 1,000 mA cm−2 for the HER and a low Tafel slope of 29 mV dec−1. At the same current density, the overpotential of the OER is only 350 mV. The alkaline electrolyzer using the electrocatalyst as both anode and cathode requires a cell voltage of only 1.47 V to output a stable current density of 10 mA cm−2. This enables it to be an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for alkaline overall water splitting and better stability for more than 375 h of continuous hydrogen production while providing substantial material cost savings relative to platinum. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the ultrahigh HER activity of the catalyst originates from the synergetic effect of optimized hydrogen adsorption in the segregation area and enhanced H2O adsorption in the un-segregation area produced by spinodal decomposition.

Abstract:The in situ dealloying strategy creates a 200 nm‐depth highly catalytic layer for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), featuring stable sub‐nano Ni3Al particles embedded in Ni(Fe)OOH. This catalyst rich in grain boundaries reduces the energy barriers and improves the conductivity and catalytic activity, resulting in outstanding OER performance and stability under laboratory and industrial conditions. Nickel‐based electrocatalysts are promising for industrial water electrolysis, but the dense hydroxyl oxide layer formed during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits active sites accessibility and presents challenges in balancing structural stability with effective charge transfer. Based on this, an efficient in situ leaching strategy is proposed to construct grain boundary‐rich catalyst structure with high charge transfer ability and a deep catalytic active layer reached >200‐nm. Under OER conditions, stable sub‐nano Ni3Al particles are embedded in Ni(Fe)OOH, originating from leaching out the unstable Ni2Al3 phase of the initial Ni2Al3/Ni3Al alloy doped with Fe. The structural evolutions are characterized using in situ Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. The catalyst exhibits exemplary performance, evidenced by a low overpotential of 212 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a minimal Tafel slope of 25.0 mV dec−1. The catalyst maintains stable for >500 h at 500 mA cm−2 under industrial conditions. Furthermore, its performance in seawater electrolysis is notably superior, exhibiting an overpotential of 223 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 37.5 mV dec−1. The in situ high activity in the deep porous phase by leaching out unstable phases provides a new method for engineering high‐performance industrial catalysts.

Abstract:High efficiency, cost-effective and durable electrocatalysts are of pivotal importance in energy conversion and storage systems. The electro-oxidation of water to oxygen plays a crucial role in such energy conversion technologies. Herein, we report a robust method for the synthesis of a bimetallic alkoxide for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for alkaline electrolysis, which yields current density of 10 mA cm = 2 at an overpotential of 215 mV in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. The catalyst demonstrates an excellent durability for more than 540 h operation with negligible degradation in activity. Raman spectra revealed that the catalyst underwent structure reconstruction during OER, evolving into oxyhydroxide, which was the active site proceeding OER in alkaline electrolyte. In-situ synchrotron X-ray absorption experiment combined with density functional theory calculation suggests a lattice oxygen involved electrocatalytic reaction mechanism for the in-situ generated nickel-iron bimetal-oxyhydroxide catalyst. This mechanism together with the synergy between nickel and iron are responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity and durability. Superlattice-Like Co-Doped Mn Oxide and NiFe Hydroxide Nanosheets toward an Energetic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Designing efficient electrocatalysts without noble metals is an imperative challenge for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) application used in the water-splitting field. However, the low catalytic stability and conductivity impede the industrial application. Herein, the cobalt-substituted manganese oxide (MnCo-O) monolayer nanosheet was exfoliated via intercalation, and the nickel iron double hydroxide (NiFe-OH) nanosheet served as a highly active composition. The oppositely charged MnCo-O and NiFe-OH nanosheet would stack into the superlattice (MnCo/NiFe) with alternating layers of ∼1 nm. Using potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution as the electrolyte, the MnCo/NiFe composite material delivered superior OER performances, which showed a small overpotential (233 mV) at current density of 10 mA cm−2 and low Tafel slope (46 mV dec–1). Such a catalyst could further present long-term catalytic durability of more than 50 h with almost no attenuation. This study develops a scalable strategy to simultaneously achieve a distinctive structure at a low cost for a high-performance noble-metal-free electrocatalyst.

Metallic nickel anchored on amorphous nickel cobalt oxide nanorods as efficient electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Developing high-activity and capital-saving electrocatalysts for the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important to improve the efficiency of water splitting. Herein, a facile reduction approach is employed to prepare metallic Ni-decorated amorphous nickel cobalt oxide (NiCoO x ) nanoarray electrocatalysts, with three-dimensional nickel foam (Ni/NiCoO x /NF) as substrate. Benefiting from abundant oxygen vacancies and preferred electron transport between metallic Ni and the NiCoO x substrate,the Ni/NiCoO x /NF delivers a current density of 50 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 348 mV in 1.0 M KOH toward OER, comparable with that of commercial RuO 2 (320 mV). Moreover, Ni/NiCoO x /NF is further served as an anodic material to assemble a two-electrode overall water splitting system (commercial Pt/C as the cathode), which achieves a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.589 V and displays reliable durability over at least 50 h (around 30 mA cm −2 ). This research offers an efficient way for generating catalysts with multi components via reduction of polymetallic oxides for electrocatalytic conversion of small molecules.

Abstract:Currently, hydrogen production through water electrolysis stands out as one of the most promising methods. However, the efficiency of hydrogen production is limited by the anodic oxygen evolution reaction, which involves a four-electron transfer process. Therefore, the development of an efficient and durable anode catalyst is important to reduce energy consumption and increase the hydrogen production rate. Herein, the Mo-doped Ni3S2 nanopillar structures were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process on nickel foam (NF). Subsequently, nanosheets of CoFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) thin films were deposited to obtain the CoFe-LDH/Mo-Ni3S2/NF catalyst. Physical characterization results revealed polycrystalline properties of the CoFe LDH nanosheets, while a non-homogeneous interface was also formed with Mo-doped Ni3S2 nanopillars. The contact angle verified the excellent hydrophilicity, which allowed the rapid release of oxygen bubbles. In terms of electrocatalysis, the catalyst exhibited an overpotential of only 227 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and demonstrated remarkable current density retention after 100 h. The catalyst was also characterized by good retention of the current density at 10 mA/cm2. This work provided the strategy for designing efficient, inexpensive and durable catalysts.

Abstract:To address issues of global energy sustainability, it is essential to develop highly efficient bifunctional transition metal-based electrocatalysts to accelerate the kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the heterogeneous molybdenum and vanadium codoped cobalt carbonate nanosheets loaded on nickel foam (VMoCoCOx@NF) are fabricated by facile hydrothermal deposition. Firstly, the mole ratio of V/Mo/Co in the composite is optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). When the optimized composite serves as a bifunctional catalyst, the water-splitting current density achieves 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2 at cell voltages of 1.54 V and 1.61 V in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte with robust stability. Furthermore, characterization is carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the fabricated VMoCoCOx@NF catalyst synergistically decreases the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates, thus accelerating OER/HER catalytic kinetics. Benefiting from the concerted advantages of porous NF substrates and clustered VMoCoCOx nanosheets, the fabricated catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance. This work presents a novel approach to developing transition metal catalysts for overall water splitting.
Monolithic Medium-Entropy Alloy Electrode Enables Efficient and Stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting has attracted tremendous interest as a promising approach for generating sustainable hydrogen for transportation and other industrial applications. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) significantly limits the efficiency of electrochemical water splitting because of the sluggish reaction kinetics derived from the intrinsic four-electron-transfer process. In addition, the stability of OER electrocatalysts encounters significant challenges during long-term operation under harsh conditions. To overcome these challenges, we demonstrate that monolithic electrodes composed of medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) containing Fe, Co, Cr, and Ni can be used as efficient and stable OER catalysts in alkaline solutions. The monolithic FeCoCrNi alloy electrode exhibited a remarkably low overpotential of 237 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 in a 1 mol/L KOH solution. Significantly, the monolithic alloy electrode can operate stably for more than 2000 hours at a practical current density of 1 A/cm2. The enhanced activity and stability of the alloy electrode are ascribed to surface reconstruction. This work presents a novel and effective approach for fabricating high-performance electrodes with excellent stability for the oxygen evolution reaction.
Fe-Based Metal–Organic Framework-Ni 3 S 2 Heterostructure Nanocomposites for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction at High Current Densities

Abstract:Hydrogen, carrying a high energy density and emitting zero greenhouse gases when in use, is particularly promising as an alternative for traditional fossil fuels. Electrochemical water splitting is an economical technology for producing sustainable and high-purity hydrogen gas. However, the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) always decreases the efficiency of hydrogen production; the development of highly active and durable electrocatalysts with improved OER kinetics is thus desirable and crucial. Herein, Fe-based metal–organic framework (MOF)-Ni3S2 heterostructure nanocomposites are synthesized on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. The self-supporting Fe MOF-Ni3S2/NF catalyst shows excellent catalytic activities for OER. In alkaline media (1.0 M KOH), only 243 mV of overpotential is needed to reach the current density of 100 mA·cm–2. Even at the commercially viable high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA·cm–2, ultralow overpotentials of 283 and 309 mV are required, respectively. The catalytic activity of Fe MOF-Ni3S2/NF far exceeds that of the noble metal catalysts (e.g., RuO2) and most non-noble metal OER catalysts reported in the literature. In addition, the Fe MOF-Ni3S2/NF nanocomposite exhibits ultrahigh long-term stability at high current densities, with almost no activity attenuation in the chronopotentiometry test conducted at 100 mA·cm–2 and a negligible attenuation (23 mV) at 500 mA·cm–2 for 20 h. Our findings provide insights into designing and preparing cost-effective, highly active, and durable electrocatalysts for OER at high current densities.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a highly important reaction that requires a relatively high overpotential and determines the rate of water splitting-a process for producing hydrogen. The overall OER performance is often largely limited by uncontrollable interface when active catalysts are loaded on conductive supports, for which polymer binders are widely used, but inevitably block species transportation channels. Here, a scalable fabrication approach to freestanding graphitized carbon nanofiber networks is reported, which provides abundant sites for in situ growing Fe/Ni catalysts with the improved interface. The fabricated hybrid membrane exhibits high activity and durability toward OER, with an overpotential of 280 mV at a geometrical current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 30 mV dec-1 in alkaline medium. As implemented as a freestanding electrode, the 3D hybrid structure achieves further enhanced OER performance with an overpotential down to 215 mV at 10 mA cm-2 . This work provides fresh insights into rationally fabricating OER electrocatalysts from the angle of electrode design.

Abstract:A combination strategy of ion exchange and hydrolytic co‐deposition is reported to synthesize amorphous NiFe hydr(oxy)oxide nanosheet arrays on a self‐supporting substrate. Benefiting from the 3D framework and the heterointerface structures, the catalyst not only can regulate mass transport and electronic structure but also improve the stability of the catalyst for prompting oxygen evolution reaction activity at high current density. Designing definite transition metal heterointerfaces is considered an effective strategy for the construction of efficient and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, but rather challenging. Herein, amorphous NiFe hydr(oxy)oxide nanosheet arrays (A‐NiFe HNSAs) are grown in situ on the surface of a self‐supporting Ni metal–organic frameworks (SNMs) electrode via a combination strategy of ion exchange and hydrolytic co‐deposition for efficient and stable large‐current‐density water oxidation. The existence of the abundant metal–oxygen bonds on the heterointerfaces can not only be of great significance to alter the electronic structure and accelerate the reaction kinetics, but also enable the redistribution of Ni/Fe charge density to effectively control the adsorption behavior of important intermediates with a close to the optimal d‐band center, dramatically narrowing the energy barriers of the OER rate‐limiting steps. By optimizing the electrode structure, the A‐NiFe HNSAs/SNMs‐NF exhibits outstanding OER performance with small overpotentials of 223 and 251 mV at 100 and 500 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 36.3 mV dec−1, and excellent durability during 120 h at 10 mA cm−2. This work significantly provides an avenue to understand and realize rationally designed heterointerface structures toward effective oxygen evolution in water‐splitting applications.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising and clean ways to produce hydrogen as a fuel. Herein, we present a facile and versatile strategy for synthesizing non-precious transition binary and ternary metal-based catalysts encapsulated in a graphitic carbon shell. NiMoC@C and NiFeMo 2 C@C were prepared via a simple sol-gel based method for application in the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). The conductive carbon layer surrounding the metals was introduced to improve electron transport throughout the catalyst structure. This multifunctional structure showed synergistic effects, possess a larger number of active sites and enhanced electrochemical durability. Structural analysis indicated that the metallic phases were encapsulated in the graphitic shell. Experimental results demonstrated that the optimal core-shell material NiFeMo 2 C@C exhibited the best catalytic performance for the OER in 0.5 M KOH, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm -2 at low overpotential of 292 mV for the OER, superior to the benchmark IrO 2 nanoparticles. The good performances and stability of these OER electrocatalysts, alongside an easily scalable procedure makes these systems ideal for industrial purposes.

A High-Entropy Oxyhydroxide with a Graded Metal Network Structure for Efficient and Robust Alkaline Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Designing high-entropy oxyhydroxides (HEOs) electrocatalysts with controlled nanostructures is vital for efficient and stable water-splitting electrocatalysts. Herein, a novel HEOs material (FeCoNiWCuOOH@Cu) containing five non-noble metal elements derived by electrodeposition on a 3D double-continuous porous Cu support is created. This support, prepared via the liquid metal dealloying method, offers a high specific surface area and rapid mass/charge transfer channels. The resulting high-entropy FeCoNiWCuOOH nanosheets provide a dense distribution of active sites. The heterostructure between Cu skeletons and FeCoNiWCuOOH nanosheets enhances mass transfer, electronic structure coupling, and overall structural stability, leading to excellent activities in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and water splitting reaction. At 10 mA cm-2, the overpotentials for OER, HER, and water splitting in 1.0 m KOH solution are 200, 18, and 1.40 V, respectively, outperforming most current electrocatalysts. The catalytic performance remains stable even after operating at 300 mA cm-2 for 100, 100, and over 1000 h, correspondingly. This material has potential applications in integrated hydrogen energy systems. More importantly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the synergy of the five elements in enhancing water-splitting activity. This work offers valuable insights for designing industrial water electrolysis systems.
