Abstract:Investigating superconductivity represents one of the most significant phenomena in the field of condensed matter physics. Our simulations aim to elucidate the structures in the metallic state of Mg1-xMoxB2, which is essential for predicting their superconducting properties. By employing a first-principle cluster expansion and particle-swarm optimization, we have predicted the structures of Mg1-xMoxB2 ternary alloys, including Mg0.667Mo0.333B2, Mg0.5Mo0.5B2, and Mg0.333Mo0.667B2, and have determined their thermodynamically stable configurations under both atmospheric and high-pressure conditions. To investigate the potential for superconductivity in these structures, we have conducted a detailed examination of electronic properties that are pertinent to determining the superconducting state. Regarding superconducting properties, Mg0.333Mo0.667B2 exhibits superconductivity with a critical temperature (Tc) of 7.4 K at ambient pressure. These findings suggest that the theoretically predicted structures in Mg/Mo-substituted metal borides could play a significant role in synthesis and offer valuable insights into superconducting materials.
Prediction of superconductivity in sandwich XB4 (X = Li, Be, Zn and Ga) films

Abstract:Borophenes and 2D boron allotropes are metallic and exhibit a BCS superconducting state, unlike graphene. In-plane stretching vibrational modes in bulk MgB2 boron layers induce phonon-mediated superconductivity. However, the effect of stretching vibrational phonon modes on transition temperature (Tc) still requires further investigations. Here, we use first-principles calculations combined with conventional BCS theory to explore the superconducting properties in a series of dynamically stable boron-based sandwich films that have not been realized experimentally. The sandwich films of XB4 (where X = Li, Be, Zn, Ga) are predicted to exhibit good phonon-mediated superconductivity with high Tc values of 25.1 K, 28.7 K, 38.7 K, and 36.2 K, respectively. The origin of the superconducting states is mainly caused by the high metallicity and strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which can be attributed to the presence of intercalated atoms within the borophene layers. It is further demonstrated in the XB4 compounds (where X = Li, Be, Zn, Ga) that the pronounced EPC is not solely attributable to the in-plane vibrations of B atoms, but it is also influenced significantly by the out-of-plane vibrations of B atoms. Sandwich (Li,Be,Zn,Ga)B4 films may be a great choice for nanoscale superconductors as the electron-phonon coupling parameter becomes greater than unity, thereby providing a powerful approach for investigating these systems with high critical temperatures.

Abstract:The structural stability, electronic structure, and superconductivity of cubic sodium hexaboride NaB6 are calculated from first principles using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations of phonon dispersion spectra, formation energy, and elastic constants indicate that the cubic NaB6 is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable, respectively. The cubic NaB6 has lower formation energy compared with the experimentally synthesized KB6. The calculated band structure and PDOS demonstrate the metallicity of NaB6. The superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure for NaB6 and KB6 are predicted to be 15.7 K with lambda= 0.60 and 14.6 K with lambda= 0.57, respectively.

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity in Magnesium Diborate (MgB$_2$) has stimulated great interest in the search of new superconductors with similar lattice structures. Unlike cuprate or iron-based superconductors, MgB$_2$ is indisputably a phonon-mediated high temperature superconductor. The emergence of high temperature superconductivity in this material results from the strong coupling between the boron $\sigma$-bonding electrons around the Fermi level and the bond-stretching optical phonon modes. Here we show, based on the first-principles calculations, that Li$_2$B$_3$C is such a good candidate of superconductor whose superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) might be even higher than MgB$_2$. Li$_2$B$_3$C consists of alternating graphene-like boron-carbon layers and boron-boron layers with intercalated lithium atoms between them. Similar to MgB$_2$, Li$_2$B$_3$C is inherently metallic and possesses two $\sigma$- and two $\pi$-electron bands around the Fermi energy. The superconducting pairs are glued predominately by the strong interaction between boron $\sigma$-bonding electrons and various optical phonon modes.
First-principles design of ambient-pressure Mg$_x$B$_2$C$_2$ and Na$_x$BC superconductors

Abstract:We employ ab initio modeling to investigate the possibility of attaining high-temperature conventional superconductivity in ambient-pressure materials based on the known MgB$_2$C$_2$ and recently proposed thermodynamically stable NaBC ternary compounds. The constructed $(T,P_M)$ phase diagrams (M = Mg or Na) indicate that these layered metal borocarbides can be hole-doped via thermal deintercalation that has been successfully used in previous experiments to produce Li$_y$BC ($y=1>x\gtrsim0.5$) samples. The relatively low temperature threshold required to trigger NaBC desodiation may help prevent the formation of defects shown recently to be detrimental to the electron-phonon coupling in the delithiated LiBC analog. According to our numerical solutions of the anisotropic full-bandwidth Migdal-Eliashberg equations, the proposed Mg$_x$B$_2$C$_2$ and Na$_x$BC materials exhibit superconducting critical temperatures between 43 K and 84 K. At the same time, we demonstrate that buckling of defect-free honeycomb BC layers, favored in heavily-doped Na$_x$BC compounds, can substantially reduce or effectively suppress the materials' potential for MgB$_2$-type superconductivity.

A first-principles investigation of the origin of superconductivity in TlBi$_2$

Abstract:The intermetallic compound TlBi$_2$ crystallizes in the MgB$_2$ structure and becomes superconducting below 6.2 K. Considering that both Tl and Bi have heavy atomic masses, it is puzzling why TlBi$_2$ is a conventional phonon-mediated superconductor. We have performed comprehensive first-principles calculations of the electronic structures, the phonon dispersions and the electron-phonon couplings for TlBi$_2$. The $6p$ orbitals of bismuth dominate over the states near the Fermi level, forming strong intra-layer $p_{x/y}$ and inter-layer $p_z$ $\sigma$ bonds which is known to have strong electron-phonon coupling. In addition, the large spin-orbit coupling interaction in TlBi$_2$ increases its electron-phonon coupling constant significantly. As a result, TlBi$_2$, with a logarithmic phonon frequency average one tenth that of MgB$_2$, is a phonon-mediated superconductor.

Abstract:Using density-functional-based methods, we show that the hole-doped Li_{x}BC and Na_{x}BC in P6_{3}/mmc crystal structure and C_{x} in graphite structure are capable of showing superconductivity, possibly with a T_{c} much higher than that of MgB_{2}. We use full-potential methods to obtain the optimized lattice constants a and c, coherent-potential approximation to describe the effects of disorder, Gaspari-Gyorffy formalism to obtain the electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$, and Allen-Dynes equation to calculate T_{c} as a function of hole concentration in these alloys.
Machine learning guided discovery of superconducting calcium borocarbides

Abstract:Pursuit of superconductivity in light-element systems at ambient pressure is of great experimental and theoretical interest. In this work, we combine a machine learning (ML) method with first-principles calculations to efficiently search for the energetically favorable ternary Ca-B-C compounds. Three new layered borocarbides (stable CaBC5 and metastable Ca2BC11 and CaB3C3) are predicted to be phonon-mediated superconductors at ambient pressure. The hexagonal CaB3C3 possesses the highest Tc of 26.05 K among the three compounds. The {\sigma}-bonging bands around the Fermi level account for the large electron-phonon coupling ({\lambda} = 0.980) of hexagonal CaB3C3. The ML-guided approach opens up a way for greatly accelerating the discovery of new high-Tc superconductors.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of LiBC compounds, which were predicted as possible candidate for high-Tc superconductivity, have been synthesised by a flux method for a wide range of flux compositions LixBC (x=0.5–2.4). Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction patterns showed a plate-like morphology and a single-phase nature of LiBC samples for the starting flux composition of Li1.25BC. The lattice constants a, c display a systematic variation with x and a maximum volume of the hexagonal unit cell at x=1.25. Electrical resistivity measurements revealed an extrinsic semiconducting behaviour of the single-phase LiBC with an activation energy of 18meV and a maximum specific resistivity of 2.5Ωcm at 300K. In contrast to the theoretical prediction of high Tc, no superconducting features were detected down to 2K both, by measurements of electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. However, the results do not allow to refute the theoretical prediction because of the lack of accurate chemical analysis methods for the LiBC compounds synthesised.

Prospect of high-temperature superconductivity in layered metal borocarbides

Abstract:Delithiation of the known layered LiBC compound was predicted to induce conventional superconductivity at liquid nitrogen temperatures but extensive experimental work over the past two decades has detected no signs of the expected superconducting transition. Using a combination of first-principles stability analysis and anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg formalism, we have investigated possible Li$_x$BC morphologies and established what particular transformations of the planar honeycomb BC layers are detrimental to the material's superconductivity. We propose that Li$_x$BC reintercalation with select alkali and alkaline earth metals could lead to synthesis of otherwise inaccessible metastable Li$_x$M$_y$BC superconductors with critical temperatures ($T_{c}$) up to 73 K. The large-scale exploration of metal borocarbides has revealed that NaBC and Li$_{1/2}$Na$_y$BC layered phases are likely true ground states at low temperatures. The findings indicate that this compositional space may host overlooked synthesizable compounds with potential to break the $T_{c}$ record for conventional superconductivity in ambient-pressure materials.

Prediction of fully metallic σ-bonded boron framework induced high superconductivity above 100 K in thermodynamically stable Sr2B5 at 40 GPa

Abstract:Metal borides have been considered as potential high-temperature superconductors since the discovery of record-holding 39 K superconductivity in bulk MgB2. In this work, we identified a superconducting yet thermodynamically stable F43m Sr2B5 at 40 GPa with a unique covalent sp3-hybridized boron framework through extensive first-principles structure searches. Remarkably, solving the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg equations resulted in a high superconducting critical temperature (Tc) around 100 K, exceeding the boiling point (77 K) of liquid nitrogen. Our in-depth analysis revealed that the high-temperature superconductivity mainly originates from the strong coupling between the metalized {\sigma}-bonded electronic bands and E phonon modes of boron atoms. Moreover, anharmonic phonon simulations suggest that F43m Sr2B5 might be recovered to ambient pressure. Our current findings provide a prototype structure with a full {\sigma}-bonded boron framework for the design of high-Tc superconducting borides that may expand to a broader variety of lightweight compounds.

Abstract:Superconductivity in two-dimensional compounds is widely studied, not only because of its application in constructing nano-superconducting devices, but also for general scientific interest. Very recently, borophene (a two-dimensional boron sheet) has been successfully grown on the Ag(111) surface, through direct evaporation of a pure boron source. The experiment unveiled two types of borophene structures, namely β12 and χ3. Herein, we employed density-functional first-principles calculations to investigate the electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in both structures of borophene. The band structures of β12 and χ3 borophenes exhibit inherent metallicity. We found that electron-phonon coupling constants in the two compounds are larger than that in MgB2. The superconducting transition temperatures were determined to be 18.7 K and 24.7 K through the McMillian-Allen-Dynes formula. These temperatures are much higher than the theoretically predicted 8.1 K and experimentally observed 7.4 K superconductivity in graphene. Our findings will enrich nano-superconducting device applications and boron-related materials science.

Abstract:Be-B/B-Ta based compounds are very attractive to researchers because of their high density and ultra-hardness. But ternary Be-B-Ta compounds are neither synthesized nor predicted. In this paper, variable composition evolutionary crystal structure prediction calculations based on first-principles method have been performed to find the stable crystal structure containing Be-B-Ta at ambient condition. The predicted five compounds BeB$_2$Ta, BeB$_3$Ta$_2$ (high-pressure phase), BeBTa, BeBTa$_2$, and Be$_2$B$_2$Ta have been found to be highly dense and very hard materials. All these compounds are metallic and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect is significant in them. Only two of them (BeB$_2$Ta and Be$_2$B$_2$Ta) have been found to be superconductors within Migdal-Eliashberg theory. The calculated critical temperature including SOC effect is 8 and 9 K for BeB$_2$Ta and Be$_2$B$_2$Ta, respectively. Because of their energetic and dynamic stability, these compounds might be favorable to synthesize in the laboratory.

Abstract:Lattice dynamics of body-centered cubic (bcc) Vb-VIb group transition metals (TM), and B1-type monocarbides and mononitrides of IIIb-VIb transition metals are studied by means of first-principles density functional perturbation theory, ultra soft pseudopotentials, and generalized gradient approximation to the exchange-correlation functional. Ground state parameters of transition metals and their compounds are correctly reproduced with the generated ultrasoft pseudopotentials. The calculated phonon spectra of the bcc metals are in excellent agreement with results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments. We show that the superconductivity of transition metal carbides (TMC) and transition metal nitrides (TMN) is related to peculiarities of the phonon spectra, and the anomalies of the spectra are connected to the number of valence electrons in crystals. The calculated electron-phonon interaction constants for TM, TMC, and TMN are in excellent agreement with experimentally determined values. Phonon spectra for a number of monocarbides and mononitrides of transition metals within the cubic NaCl- and hexagonal WC-type structures are predicted. Ideal stoichiometric B1 crystals of ScC, YC, and VC are predicted to be dynamically stable and superconducting materials. We also conclude that YN is a semiconductor.

Machine-learning Guided Search for Phonon-mediated Superconductivity in Boron and Carbon Compounds

Abstract:We present a workflow that iteratively combines \textit{ab-initio} calculations with a machine-learning (ML) guided search for superconducting compounds with both dynamical stability and instability from imaginary phonon modes, the latter of which have been largely overlooked in previous studies. Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) properties and critical temperature (T$_c$) of 417 boron, carbon, and borocarbide compounds have been calculated with density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) and isotropic Eliashberg approximation. Our study addresses T$_c$ convergence of Brillouin zone sampling with an ansatz test, stabilizing imaginary phonon modes for significant EPC contributions and comparing performance of two ML models especially when including compounds of dynamical instability. We predict a few promising superconducting compounds with formation energy just above the ground state convex hull, such as Ca$_5$B$_3$N$_6$ (35 K), TaNbC$_2$ (28.4 K), Nb$_3$B$_3$C (16.4 K), Y$_2$B$_3$C$_2$ (4.0 K), Pd$_3$CaB (7.0 K), MoRuB$_2$ (15.6 K), RuVB$_2$ (15.0 K), RuSc$_3$C$_4$ (6.6 K) among others.

These compounds have a cubic structure featuring an MH6 octahedron motif. Our screening calculations suggest that 26 compounds exhibit dynamic stability and strong electron-phonon coupling. Among them, Mg2RhH6, Mg2IrH6, Al2MnH6, and Li2CuH6 show promising energetic stability and T c of more than 50 K at ambient pressure. This study underscores promising high-T c compounds at ambient pressure with distinctive MH6 motifs.

Abstract:XB 2 (X = Mg and Al) compounds have drawn great attention for their superior electronic characteristics and potential applications in semiconductors and superconductors. The study of phonon thermal transport properties of XB 2 is significant to their application and mechanism behind research. In this work, the phonon thermal transport properties of three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) XB 2 were studied by first-principles calculations. After considering the electron–phonon interaction (EPI), the thermal conductivities (TCs) of 3D MgB 2 and 3D AlB 2 decrease by 29% and 16% which is consistent with experimental values. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms of reduction on lattice TCs are the decrease in phonon lifetime and heat capacity when considering quantum confinement effect. More importantly, we are surprised to find that there is a correlation between quantum confinement effect and EPI. The quantum confinement will change the phonon and electron characteristics which has an impact on EPI. Overall, our work is expected to provide insights into the phonon thermal transport properties of XB 2 compounds considering EPI and quantum confinement effect.

Abstract:Boron-based compounds have triggered substantial attention due to their multifunctional properties, incorporating excellent hardness and superconductivity. While tetragonal metal borides LiB4 and NaB4 with BaAl4-type structure and striking clathrate boron motif have been induced under compression, there is still a lack of deep understanding of their potential properties at ambient pressure. We herein conduct a comprehensive study on I4/mmm-structured LiB4 and NaB4 under ambient pressure via first-principles calculations. Remarkably, both LiB4 and NaB4 are found to possess high Vickers hardness of 39 GPa, which is ascribed to the robust boron framework with strong covalency. Furthermore, their high hardness values together with distinguished stability make them highly potential superhard materials. Meanwhile, electron–phonon coupling analysis reveals that both LiB4 and NaB4 are conventional phonon-mediated superconductors, with critical temperatures of 6 and 8 K at 1 atmosphere pressure (atm), respectively, mainly arising from the coupling of B 2p electronic states and the low-frequency phonon modes associated with Li-, Na-, and B-derived vibrations. This work provides valuable insights into the mechanical and superconducting behaviors of metal borides and will boost further studies of emergent borides with multiple functionalities.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that NaB6, KB6, and RbB6 adopting Pm3̄m are superconductors with a relatively high Tc under ambient conditions. In this paper, we conducted systematic structural and related properties research on CsB6 through a genetic evolution algorithm and total energy calculations based on density functional theory between 0 and 20 GPa. Our results reveal a cubic Pm3̄m CsB6, which is dynamically stable under the pressures we studied. We systematically calculated the formation enthalpies, electronic properties, and superconducting properties of Pm3̄m MB6 (M = Na, K, Rb, Cs). They all exhibit metallic features, and boron has high contributions to band structures, density of states, and electron–phonon coupling (EPC). The calculated results about the Helmholtz free energy difference of Pm3̄m CsB6 at 0, 10, and 20 GPa indicate that it is stable upon chemical decomposition (decomposition to simple substances Cs and B) from 0 to 400 K. The phonon density of states indicates that boron atoms occupy the high frequency area. The EPC results show that Pm3̄m CsB6 is a superconductor with Tc = 11.7 K at 0 GPa, close to NaB6 (13.1 K), KB6 (11.7 K), and RbB6 (11.3 K) at 0 GPa in our work, which indicates that boron atoms play an essential role in superconductivity: vibrations of B6 regular octagons lead to the high Tc of Pm3̄m MB6. Our work about Pm3̄m hexaborides provides a supplementary study on the borides of the group IA elements (without Fr and Li) and has an important guiding significance for the experimental synthesis of CsB6.
