Abstract:Thermal interface materials with high thermal conductivity are essential to transfer the redundant heat and improve the reliability of integrated circuits. Here we reported high thermal conductivity in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposite incorporated with few-layer graphene, which was exfoliated in chloroform with assistance of hyperbranched polyethylene-gpolyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane copolymer (HBPE@POSS) as the stabilizer. In order to improve the compatibility and enhance the thermal property, the HBPE@POSS copolymer was synthesized via the unique chain walking polymerization mechanism, which subsequently was applied to exfoliate natural graphite into few-layer graphene in low-boiling-point solvents. The majority of resultant nanosheets with low defects was verified with lateral dimension of similar to 400 nm and the thickness of similar to 1.6 nm, which is attributed to the presence of CH-pi noncovalent interaction between graphene and HBPE@POSS copolymer. The graphene nanoplates (GNPs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposites were prepared by solution casting, in which graphene nanofillers were dispersed uniformly in the matrix due to good compatibility between PDMS and oligomeric silsesquioxane segments adsorbed on the nanosheets. The thermal conductivity of 4.0 wt% GNPs/PDMS nanocomposite reaches 0.93 W m(-1) K-1, which is 400% higher than that of pure PDMS. The PDMS nanocomposite incorporated with few-layer graphene exhibits a promising prospect in thermal interface for thermal management of electronic devices, and sheds a light on the interfacial improvement mechanism of thermal conductivity for polymer composite.

Abstract:Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have attracted tremendous interest due to their unique properties and bonding capabilities. This study focuses on the effect of GNP dispersion on the mechanical, thermal, and morphological behavior of GNP/epoxy nanocomposites. This study aims to understand how the dispersion of GNPs affects the properties of epoxy nanocomposite and to identify the best dispersion approach for improving mechanical performance. A solvent mixing technique that includes mechanical stirring and ultrasonication was used for producing the nanocomposites. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the interaction between GNPs and the epoxy matrix. The measurements of density and moisture content were used to confirm that GNPs were successfully incorporated into the nanocomposite. The findings showed that GNPs are successfully dispersed in the epoxy matrix by combining mechanical stirring and ultrasonication in a single step, producing well-dispersed nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties. Particularly, the nanocomposites at a low GNP loading of 0.1 wt%, demonstrate superior mechanical strength, as shown by increased tensile properties, including improved Young's modulus (1.86 GPa), strength (57.31 MPa), and elongation at break (4.98). The nanocomposite with 0.25 wt% GNP loading performs better, according to the viscoelastic analysis and flexural properties (113.18 MPa). Except for the nanocomposite with a 0.5 wt% GNP loading, which has a higher thermal breakdown temperature, the thermal characteristics do not significantly alter. The effective dispersion of GNPs in the epoxy matrix and low agglomeration is confirmed by the morphological characterization. The findings help with filler selection and identifying the best dispersion approach, which improves mechanical performance. The effective integration of GNPs and their interaction with the epoxy matrix provides the doorway for additional investigation and the development of sophisticated nanocomposites. In fields like aerospace, automotive, and electronics where higher mechanical performance and functionality are required, GNPs' improved mechanical properties and successful dispersion present exciting potential. Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation of nanocomposites composed of three ratios of epoxy/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) by weight. The 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt.% specimens were carefully manufactured, and their mechanical and thermal conductivity properties were examined. The tensile strength and modulus of epoxy/GNPs were enhanced by the large surface area of graphene nanoplatelets, causing crack deflection that created new fracture fronts and friction because of the rough fracture surface. However, the compressive strength was gradually reduced as GNP loading percentages increased. This was probably due to severe plastic yielding on the epoxy, leading to catastrophic axial splitting caused by premature fractures. Furthermore, the highest thermal conductivity was 0.1283 W/m-K, representing a 20.92% improvement over neat epoxy (0.1061 W/m-K) when 0.3 wt.% GNPs were added to the epoxy. This was because of efficient heat propagation in the GNPs due to electron movement through percolative paths. The tensile failure mode in epoxy/GNP nanocomposites showed a few deflected and bifurcated rough cracks and brittle, dimple-like fractures. Contrarily, compressive failure mode in GNP-added epoxy showed plastic flexural buckling and brittle large-axial splitting. The epoxy/GNP nanocomposites were considered a damage-tolerant material.

Abstract:Incorporating graphene into epoxy composites is a facile strategy to improve their mechanical performances. However, the uniform and reliable dispersion of graphene within epoxy matrix remains a large challenge owing to the intrinsic difference in chemical properties. Here, pyrene‐functionalized polyethylene glycol (Py‐PEG‐Py) was easily synthesized and utilized as a dispersant to homogenize graphene. The effect of graphene loading on mechanical performances of reinforced epoxy composites was also investigated. As 0.01 to 0.05 wt% of graphene were incorporated in epoxy resin, the resulted composites exhibited excellent improvement in flexural strength and fracture toughness compared with neat epoxy. Typically, the flexural strength increased from 63.57 ± 1.5 MPa for neat epoxy to 108.36 ± 1.9 MPa (about 70.5%) for composite, and the fracture toughness (KIC) increased from 1.25 MPa m1/2 for neat epoxy to 2.15 MPa m1/2 (around 72%) for composite modified with only 0.04 wt% of graphene and 4 wt% of Py‐PEG‐Py. Crack pinning caused by well dispersed graphene was contributed to enhancement of the fracture toughness. This work reveals a tiny amount graphene can also largely improve the mechanical properties of composites, providing a feasible approach to disperse graphene and fabricate high performance graphene composites.

Abstract:Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) employed as conductive fillers were added to an epoxy matrix, diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA), to enhance the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding efficiency of DGEBA. In addition, we investigated the influence of GNP fraction on the thermal properties, flexural strength, impact strength, electrical conductivity, electromagnetic shielding efficiency, and morphology of DGEBA/GNP nanocomposites. The electrical properties indicated that the electrical conductivity of DGEBA/GNP nanocomposites consisting of higher than 7.5 wt% GNPs was significantly improved compared to that of pristine DGEBA. The electromagnetic shielding efficiency of the nanocomposite showed a maximum value of 3.87 dB at 10 wt% GNPs, which is 287% higher than that of pristine DGEBA. An analysis of the fracture surfaces of the nanocomposites showed a rough morphology with numerous micro-cracks. In addition, the GNPs in the DGEBA matrix were stacked and formed a continuous conductive path at high GNP contents.

Abstract:High-performance composites were made with sheet graphene (GNP) and spherical silica (SiO 2 ) as mesoporous nanofillers. The nanofillers are composed of SiO 2 tightly wrapped on GNP by the sol–gel method, resulting in SiO 2 @GNP (SG) composites. The SG composites are then combined with epoxy resin (EP) to form polymer matrices. After conducting a series of characterization and assessments, including SEM, XRD, FTIR, and BET, the results show that the use of SG composites as hollow mesoporous nanofillers have a higher potential to create a significant quantity of thermally conductive pathways in the polymer matrix. Meanwhile, SiO 2 @GNP/EP (SGE) composites have low dielectric constants and dielectric losses, along with high thermal conductivities. The optimal dielectric constant of SGE composites is 2.65 at 10 Hz, achieved at a 5 wt% SG composites loading, and the dielectric losses stay below 0.02 (10–10 6 Hz). Furthermore, the thermal conductivity reaches 0.72 w/(m K). Compared to neat EP, the SGE composites reduce the dielectric constant by 13.7% (10 Hz) and increase thermal conductivity by 140%. The robust electrical insulation and thermal conductivity of the aforementioned features lend themselves well to a range of applications. The SGE composites show good promise in several industries, with excellent potential in the realm of 5G communications particularly, such as epoxy plastic sealing materials.

Abstract:Abstract Epoxy resin is one of the most widely used thermoset polymers in high-performance composite materials for lightweight applications. However, epoxy has a high coefficient of friction, which limits its tribological applications. In this study, the effect was investigated of different weight fractions of solid lubricant graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), ranging from 0 to 4.5 wt%, on mechanical and adhesive wear performance of epoxy. Adhesive wear tests covered mild and severe wear regimes. The correlation of tribological and mechanical properties was studied as well. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the failure mechanisms for both tribological and mechanical samples after each test. The results revealed that the addition of GNPs to the epoxy improved its stiffness and hardness but reduced its fracture strength and toughness. Adhesive wear performance exhibited high efficiency with GNP additions and showed reductions in the specific wear rate, the coefficient of friction, and the induced interface temperature by 76%, 37%, and 22%, respectively. A fatigue wear mechanism was predominant as the applied load increased. Most importantly, severe wear signs occurred when the interface temperature reached the heat distortion temperature of the epoxy. The tribological, and mechanical properties showed only a weak correlation to each other. The addition of GNPs to epoxy by less than 4.5 wt% was highly efficient to improve the wear performance while maintaining the fracture strength and toughness. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis shows no chemical interaction between the epoxy matrix with GNPs, which implies its physical interaction.

The functional graphene/epoxy resin composites prepared by novel two-phase extraction towards enhancing mechanical properties and thermal stability

Abstract:Epoxy resins, known for their excellent properties, are widely used thermosetting resins, but their tendency towards brittle fracture limits their applications. This study addresses this issue by preparing graphene oxide via the Hummer method, modifying it with hyperbranched polyamide ester, and reducing it with hydrazine hydrate to obtain functionalized graphene. This functionalized graphene improves compatibility with epoxy resin. Using a novel two-phase extraction method, different ratios of functionalized graphene/epoxy composites were prepared and tested for mechanical properties and thermal stability. The results showed significant improvements: the tensile strength of composites with 0.1 wt% functionalized graphene increased by 77% over pure epoxy resin, flexural strength by 56%, and glass transition temperature by 50°C. These enhancements, attributed to the improved compatibility between graphene and epoxy resin, demonstrate the potential of functionalized graphene to mitigate the brittleness of epoxy resins, expanding their application potential.
Enhanced thermal and electrical conductivity in epoxy nanocomposites via liquid crystal-driven alignment of graphene

Abstract:There is a lack of systematic research on the use of liquid crystal-modified graphene in the production of thermally conductive composites. In this work, we utilized covalent and non-covalent interactions between 4′-allyloxy-biphenyl-4-ol (AOBPO) and graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and high-temperature reduced graphene oxide (GNS) to improve the compatibility and dispersion of the fillers with the silicone-cycloaliphatic epoxy resin. The thermal conductivity of GNS-AOBPO composite material significantly increases when a shear force field is applied, even at a lower filler content of 7 wt%, reaching 0.828 W/(m·K), which is 1.8 times higher than that without the field. At 9 wt% filler content, the thermal conductivity further increases to 1.161 W/(m·K), which is 10 times higher than epoxy resin. Concurrently, the electrical resistivity decreased by half. This provides a method for preparing thermal conductive composite materials by inducing the orientation of graphene through the application of a shear force field.

Abstract:The effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and carbon foam (CF) micrograins on the morphology and thermomechanical and tribological properties of epoxy composites was determined. The binary composites containing separately CF grains or GNPs and multiphase composites with CF particles and GNPs together obtained by two procedures were studied. In the first method GNPs were dispersed initially in epoxy resin and then CF particles were introduced. In the second procedure, conversely, CF particles were distributed in polymer before GNPs addition. CF simultaneously applied with GNPs strongly improves storage modulus, hardness and thermal stability of composites and reduces the friction coefficient and the wear rate compared to epoxy matrix. The composite fabricated by the first method exhibited better tribological properties, especially considering the higher wear load.

Abstract:<p>New types of carbon nanomaterials, such as multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and graphene nanoplatelet (GNP), have attracted much attention in enhancing the thermal conductivity of polymers. However, due to the high electric conductivity of carbon materials, it is difficult for carbon‐based epoxy to achieve the high thermal conductivity while obtaining desired dielectric property. In this article, using GNP and MWCNT modified by titanate coupling agent (PN‐105), a novel method for highly thermally conductive, but electrically insulating epoxy nanocomposites is reported. The experimental results show that the 4% modified MWCNTs/epoxy nanocomposite has presented a simple thermal conductivity network, which can significantly improve the thermal conductivity of epoxy resin (EP), about 6.5 times higher than pure epoxy. Co‐filled with 2% GNPs and 4% MWCNTs, the thermal conductivity of the epoxy nanocomposite is increased to 2.04 W/mK, 957% higher than pure epoxy. In addition, the dielectric constant of the composite is 9.1, which is maintained within an acceptable range. The dynamic mechanical results show that the filling of carbon materials can reduce the storage modulus and the loss factor of EP.</p>

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. The pairs of nanofillers prepared by graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were added to the epoxy matrix in various ratios to produce hybrid epoxy nanocomposites. The effects of the presence of these nanofillers at 0.1–0.4 wt.% on the mechanical and thermal properties were tested. Likewise, carbon fiber reinforced MWCNT/GNP modified epoxy nanocomposite laminates were also manufactured and tested. The dispersion of nanofiller in the polymer matrix was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). It was determined that the hybrid composite consisting of a MWCNT:GNP ratio of 1:3 and a nanofiller ratio of 0.3 wt.% showed the best mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 75.1 MPa. The presence of GNPs and MWCNT nanofillers in epoxy/carbon fiber laminates influenced positively the tensile strength and strain but negatively the elastic modulus. Glass transition temperature of epoxy increased from 87.25°C to 114.67°C for MWCNT:GNP ratio of 1:1 (0.3 wt.%).

Abstract:In order to improve the interfacial properties of graphene oxide (GO) and epoxy resin (EP), hyperbranched polyesters with terminal carboxyl (HBP) non-covalently functionalized graphene oxide (HBP-GO) was achieved by strong π-π coupling between hyperbranched polyesters and GO nanosheets. The effects of non-covalent functionalization of GO on the dispersibility, wettability and interfacial properties were analyzed. The mechanical properties and enhancement mechanism of HBP-GO/EP composites were investigated. The results show that the hyperbranched polyesters is embedded in the GO layer due to its highly branched structure, which forms the steric hindrance effect between the GO nanosheets, effectively prevents the agglomeration of GO nanosheets, and significantly improved the dispersibility of GO. Simultaneously, the contact angle of HBP-GO with EP is reduced, the surface energy, interfacial energy and adhesion work are increased, then the wetting property of HBP-GO is significantly improved. The main toughening mechanism of HBP-GO is microcrack deflection induced by HBP-GO and plastic deformation of the EP matrix. In the microcrack propagation zones, HBP-GO may produce the pinning effect near the microcrack tips and change their stress state, resulting in microcrack deflection and bifurcation. So, the microcrack propagation path is more tortuous, which will consume much more fracture energy. Therefore, the mechanical properties of the HBP-GO/EP composites are greatly improved.

Abstract:The combination of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and polymer matrix provides an opportunity to synthesize polymer composites with excellent engineering application performance. However, the preparation of high-performance GO-based composites is difficult because the nano-scaled GO is easily agglomerated, and the weak interface bonding force between the GO and polymer. Herein, a simple and effective method for preparing GO-based composites via hyperbranched polymer (HPB) grafting is presented. The resulting HPB-GO has uniformly dispersed in the epoxy resin (EP) matrix and combines with the matrix through chemical bonds, which has a strong interfacial acting force and improves the load transfer efficiency of the matrix to HPB-GO. Thus, the resultant EP/HPB-GO nanocomposite exhibited superior mechanical properties with a dramatic increase with only 0.2 wt% HPB-GO loading, the impact strength, the tensile strength, and the compression strength, i.e., 58.53%, 83.29%, and 57%, respectively, when compared to pure epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the nanocomposite exhibits an 80% increase in thermal conductivity (0.32 W m−1 K−1). Moreover, outstanding electrical insulation performance is obtained. The ultra-low content of HPB-GO significantly improves the performance of epoxy resin, which provides an economical and effective method to broaden the application of epoxy resin in engineering.

Abstract:This work investigates the hybrid nanocomposites of graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) and Al2O3 NPs in epoxy resin. The hybrid nanocomposite containing 1.5 wt.% GNPs and 8.5 wt.% Al2O3 NPs shows excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability. This nanocomposite holds promise as a component in structural applications, particularly in automobiles, aerospace components, and sports equipment. This work investigates the hybrid nanocomposites manufactured by direct mixing by dispersing varying weight percentages (wt.%) of graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) and Al2O3 NPs in epoxy resin. Their properties are then obtained using various mechanical (tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness) and thermal (thermogravimetric) analyses. Furthermore, their microstructure and functional groups are studied by SEM and FTIR, respectively. The hybrid nanocomposite, which contains 1.5 wt.% GNPs and 8.5 wt.% Al2O3 NPs, has excellent mechanical properties. Compared to a composite without GNPs, the tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and shore D hardness improve by 95.12, 90.01, 171.43, and 19.75%, respectively. It is also found that hybrid nanocomposite exhibits enhanced thermal stability as GNPs increase, particularly at lower wt.% of Al2O3. The SEM of tensile fractured specimens of GNPs/Al2O3 epoxy hybrid nanocomposites reveals prominent failure mechanisms, including agglomeration of GNPs and debonding between the GNPs/Al2O3 and epoxy. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis reveals distinctive spectral peaks indicating successful incorporation of Al2O3 and GNPs into the epoxy‐based composite, with observed peaks corresponding to functional groups and bonds characteristic of each component. These findings suggest that the manufactured nanocomposite holds promise as a component in structural applications, particularly in automobiles, aerospace components, and sports equipment.

Abstract:Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a relevant thermoplastic in industry and in the biomedical sector. In this work, the lubricant capability of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is used for improving the PEEK wear properties. Nanocomposites were prepared by solvent-free melt-blending and injection molding at various compositions between 1 and 10 wt. % of GNPs. The Raman G band shows a progressive increment proportional to the bulk GNP percentage. From calorimetric data, the polymer matrix structure is interpreted in terms of a 3-phase model, in which the crystalline phase fluctuates from 39 to 34% upon GNP addition. Thermal conductivity varies in accordance with the polymer crystallinity. Tensile and flexural tests show a progressive increase in the modulus, as well as a decrease in the fracture strength and the work of fracture. Most important, the composite surface undergoes a substantial improvement in hardness (60%), together with a decrease in the coefficient of friction (−38%) and a great reduction in the wear factor (−83%). Abrasion and fatigue wear mechanisms are predominant at the lowest and highest GNP concentrations respectively. In conclusion, GNPs are used without any chemical functionalization as the filler in PEEK-based materials, improving the surface hardness and the tribological properties.

Abstract:Graphene nanosheets-filled epoxy composites (GNS/Epoxy) were prepared at different filler loading levels from 0.25 to 3.00 wt %. A fast dispersion method as short as 5 min is employed to disperse GNS in epoxy matrix, which was enough for the homogeneous dispersion of GNS with the help of high ultrasonic frequency of 100 kHz and power of 200 W and high heat treatment temperature of 70 degrees C. The maximum electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity of the composites achieved 0.058 Sm-1 and 0.57 Wm(-1)K(-1), respectively, with a low electrical percolation threshold of 1.50 wt %. The electrical conductivities were further predicted by percolation theory and found to agree well with the experimental results, which indicated that the graphene nanosheets dispersed very well in the matrix even at very short processing time. The results showed that the microstructures, thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of epoxy polymer were significantly improved by adding a low amount of graphene nanosheets. Abstract:Graphene is a two-dimensional nanomaterial with remarkable strength and is a highly effective enhancer in polymer materials. However, the mechanisms underlying the enhancement between the enhancer and the base material remain uncertain. In this study, we have successfully prepared advanced epoxy nanocomposites by grafting polyacrylic acid onto 3D porous graphene (3DG). The covalent functionalization of 3DG has proven to be highly effective in preventing its aggregation within the epoxy matrix. The mechanical test results demonstrated a substantial enhancement in the tensile strength (41.04%), elastic modulus (43.23%), and impact strength (370.88%) of the epoxy resin upon the incorporation of polyacrylic acid-modified graphene (PAAMG). The fracture surfaces of the composites were examined using scanning electron microscopy, which provided insights into the enhancer's mechanism of enhancement. Notably, employing a range of molecular dynamic simulations and analyses, we found that PAAMG exhibits the ability to bifurcate cracks, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the material.

Abstract:A three-roll mill processing technique was used to disperse graphene nanoplatelets into epon 828 epoxy system. As a first step of this research, processing of graphene/epoxy nanocomposites was explored with different weight percentages of graphene. After establishing an optimal and repeatable process to achieve good electrical properties, the materials were tested for thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. The xGnP-25 graphene nanoplatelet supplied by XG Science Inc. was used; the graphene average diameter was 25 μm and thickness was 6–10 nm. Mechanical mixing, sonication and three-roll mill dispersion techniques were investigated to disperse graphene in epon 828 epoxy. The study showed that the three-roll dispersion is effective, repeatable and potentially scalable to disperse graphene into epoxy to increase the electrical conductivity. The weight percentage of graphene used ranged from 0.5 to 5.0. Percolation threshold of graphene was found to be 1.0 wt%. Through-the-thickness or volume electrical conductivity increased by nine log cycles, thermal conductivity doubled and fracture toughness increased by one-third for 1.0 wt% addition of graphene to epon 828. However, the mechanical properties remained almost unchanged.
