Abstract:Recently, electromagnetic radiation is a serious threat to equipment accuracy, military safety and human health. The combination with different materials to fabricate absorber composites with well-designed morphology is expected to ameliorate this issue. In here, CuS/Fe3O4@polypyrrole (CuS/Fe3O4@PPy) flower-like composites are constructed by the combination of hydrothermal method, solvothermal method and in-situ polymerization. CuS with flower-like structure consisting of nanosheets can provide a conductive backbone and large specific surface area. Hollow Fe3O4 microspheres play a key role in deciding magnetic loss, and electromagnetic waves can penetrate their hollow structure, result in multiple reflection and refraction. PPy coating can enhance the combined strength of composite, and effectively consume microwaves by scattering and multiple refraction in the intercalated structure. As expected, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of CuS/Fe3O4@PPy composites is -74.12 dB at 8.16 GHz with a thickness of 2.96 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 4.6 GHz (13.4-18.0 GHz) at 1.68 mm. The excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performances are attributed to the synergy effect of different components. This work provides a unique strategy for the structural design of flower-like microspheres in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption.
Promising broadband and enhanced microwave absorption of polypyrrole decorated hollow porous ZnO microspheres

Abstract:The design of hollow porous microstructure and the selection of reasonable dielectric composition are effective ways to obtain microwave absorbing (MWA) materials with outstanding performance. In this paper, polypyrrole decorated ZnO hollow porous composites (ZnO@PPy HPC) with improved MWA performance were successfully prepared by an in-situ polymerization method. The results showed that PPy was uniformly loaded on the surface of ZnO hollow porous microspheres (ZnO HPM) to build a hierarchically core-shell hollow structure. The addition and proportion regulation of PPy can effectively improve the dielectric properties, generate interfacial polarization effect and achieve good impedance matching, leading to enhanced MWA characteristics of composite materials. ZnO@PPy HPC exhibited promising broadband microwave absorption properties. The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) reached −48.5 dB at 14.5 GHz with broad effective bandwidth (less than −10 dB) of 6.2 GHz when the matching thickness was 2.2 mm. This study provides guidance for the development on a new type of microwave absorbing materials composed of hollow porous structure and conductive polymer.

Abstract:Lightweight nanocomposites consisting of magnetic and dielectric units aroused intensive interest as potential high performance electromagnetic wave absorbing materials. In this work, we report a facile and efficient method to fabricate（Co, SiO 2 ）/PPy composites with tunable electromagnetic properties. The absorbing properties and effective absorbing bandwidth can be regulated by controlling the content of SiO 2 in composites. The composite shows a maximum reflection loss（RL） of-65.31 d B at 11.12 GHz with a thickness of 3.002 mm when SiO 2 being 22 wt.%. The effective absorbing bandwidth reaches up to5.1 GHz（8.91–14.01 GHz）, which covers the entire X band（8–12 GHz）. The improved impedance matching, high interfacial polarization and complex electromagnetic synergy in the composites are the key factors giving rise to the higher efficient absorption. The PPy aerogel-based nanocomposites with controllable absorption performance, lower density and strong environmental adaptability will become attractive candidates as advanced microwave absorbing materials.
Elaborate structural design of polypyrrole-based microwave absorbers: Synthesis, enhanced dielectric characteristics, and superior absorption capability

Abstract:Intrinsically conductive polymers are expected as an advanced microwave absorption material due to their adjustable dielectric characteristics and low density. In this investigation, polypyrrole (PPy) with spherical aggregation and nanofiber structures were successfully synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization strategy. The impact of reaction conditions on the structure, morphology, size, and chemical constituents has been investigated. The results indicate that the strong interfacial interaction between dopamine and pyrrole monomer leads to the formation of nanofibers. Because of the synergistic effect of favorable impedance matching, improved dielectric loss, and conductive loss, the PPy aggregations with nanosized particles exhibit outstanding absorption capability. At 6.32 GHz, the minimum reflection loss even reaches -46.73 dB. The effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) covers a broad frequency range of 6.51 GHz. Our work provides a versatile strategy for PPy-based materials with elaborately structural design to achieve excellent and modulated microwave absorption capability.

Abstract:Ferries are appearing as attractive microwave absorption (MW) materials due to outstanding magnetic properties, simple preparation process, structure stabilization and low price, but poor impedance matching and low conductivity have limited their extensive applications. In this work, hierarchically hollow CoFe2O4/polypyrrole nanocubes (CoFe2O4@PPy HNCs) with enhanced electromagnetic characteristics for MW absorption are fabricated by combining self-sacrificing template and in-situ polymerization route. The CoFe2O4@PPy composites were characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, and TEM. The results verify that PPy are coated equably on the surface of CoFe2O4 nanocubes to form a unique hierarchically hollow structure. Moreover, the electromagnetic characteristics can be adjusted by regulating PPy proportion. The outcomes demonstrate that the as-prepared CoFe2O4@PPy composites has outstanding MW absorbing ability. The desirable microwave absorption is achieved in the composite of CF@PPy-2, where the minimum reflection loss (RL) reaches − 43.85 dB at 9.7 GHz with a thickness of 3.0 mm and broad effective bandwidth (RL ≤ −10 dB) of 5.7 GHz can be achieved at 2.0 mm thickness. This is because the moderate PPy coating endows CoFe2O4@PPy composites with improved impedance matching and multiple loss mechanisms. In view of its excellent MW absorbing performance, hierarchical CoFe2O4@PPy HNCs is expected to be potential MW absorbers for extensive applications.

Abstract:Electromagnetic absorption composite with prominent absorption properties and wider absorption bandwidth are in urgent desire. Polypyrrole-based composite is a prosperous candidate due to its easiness in synthesis, morphological diversity and controllable conductivity. In the present work, cobalt-nickel carbonate hydroxide (CCH) microwave absorption materials incorporating polypyrrole nanotubes (PNTs) in different loadings (CCH/PNTs) were prepared via a facile template method next to a hydrothermal treatment. The CCH is revealed in a sea-urchin-like morphology and PNTs are dispersed on the surface of the CCH. In light of the unique morphology, large specific surface area and interfaces, the CCH/PNTs composites exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance and extensive bandwidth of absorption. With a 180 mg loading of PNTs, the composite delivers a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −57.5 dB with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.44 GHz. By tuning the matching thickness, a wide EAB larger than 7 GHz can be obtained in the X-band and Ku-band. The prominent EMW absorption properties can be ascribed to the dielectric loss, the polarization loss and multiple scattering attenuation from the large surfaces and interfaces from PNTs, and the optimization of impedance matching via CCH. The present research can offer an intuitive guide for the conception of microwave absorbers with wide absorption bandwidth.

Abstract:MXene aerogels with a porous microstructure are a promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material due to its low density and excellent electrical conductivity, which has attracted widespread attention. Compared with traditional EMI shielding materials that rely on reflection as the primary mechanism, MXene aerogels with absorption as the dominant mechanism have greater potential for development as a novel EMI shielding material because of its ability to reduce environmental contamination from reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves from materials. In this study, a novel Ti3C2Tx MXene/PEDOT:PSS hybrid aerogel was presented by freeze-drying and thermal annealing using few-layered Ti3C2Tx MXene and the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). PEDOT:PSS not only improved the gelling ability of Ti3C2Tx but also successfully established a conductive bridge between MXene nanosheets. The experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid aerogel exhibited an obvious porous microstructure, which was beneficial for the multiple scattering of EM waves within the materials. The EMI shielding effectiveness and specific shielding effectiveness reached up to 59 dB and 10,841 dB·cm2·g-1, respectively, while the SER/SET ratio value was only 0.05, indicating superior wave absorption performance. Furthermore, the good impedance matching, due to the electrical conductance loss and polarization loss effect of the composites, plays a critical role in their excellent wave absorption and EMI shielding performance. Therefore, this work provides a practical approach for designing and fabricating lightweight absorption-dominated EMI shielding materials.
Polystyrene-Modulated Polypyrrole to Achieve Controllable Electromagnetic-Wave Absorption with Enhanced Environmental Stability

Abstract:The moderation of the dielectric properties of polymer composites and their environmental stability need to be considered comprehensively in the design of microwave-absorbing materials. In this work, polypyrrole/polystyrene (PPy/PS) composited particles were synthesized through a facile in situ bulk polymerization procedure. The PS component can be modulated conveniently by controlling the polymerization time. FTIR and Raman analyses disclosed that the PS component was immobilized in PPy via covalent bonds. The electromagnetic characterization results indicated that the dielectric properties and, thus, the microwave absorption could be controlled when the styrene polymerization was prolonged from 6 h (PPy-6) to 19 h (PPy-19). The composite PPy-19 displayed an optimal reflection loss of −51.7 dB with a matching thickness of 3.16 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) even reached 5.8 GHz at 2.4 mm. The PS component endowed PPy/PS composites with more robust environmental stability than homogeneous PPy. After being exposed to air for 365 days and hydrothermally treated at 100 °C for 12 h, PPy-19 still exhibited a reflection loss superior to −20 dB. The present work provides a new insight into the adjustment of the electromagnetic properties of PPy composites to fabricate high-performance microwave absorbers with superior environmental stability.

Abstract:For the non-magnetic materials, polarization and conductivity loss are the keys to affect the electromagnetic wave absorption properties. The heterogeneous interfacial polarization is an important scientific issue in research of electromagnetic wave absorbing materials. Carbon nanotubes/pyrolytic carbon hollow microspheres (CNTs/PyC HMs) are prepared by in-situ growth of CNTs growing on the surface of zero-dimensional PyC HMs carrier. A large number of heterogeneous interface between CNTs and PyC HMs are constructed. The crystallization degree of CNTs can be significantly regulated in a small temperature range. When the reaction temperature increases from 600 to 700 °C, CNTs gradually change from amorphous to crystalline state. The higher crystallization degree of CNTs leads to a greater conductivity differences in heterogeneous interfaces, which results in an enhancement of interfacial polarization intensity. CNTs/PyC HMs with special hollow structure and a large number of heterogeneous interfaces exhibit excellent dielectric loss capability. When the thickness is 2.3 mm and reaction temperature is 650 °C, the minimum reflection coefficient is −56 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth reaches 4 GHz. The polarization loss induced by heterogeneous interfaces is an important avenue to enhance electromagnetic wave absorption properties, and a design strategy of interfacial polarization dominant electromagnetic wave absorbing material is explored.

Abstract:In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO)/polypyrrole (PPy) composites with flower- and rod-like structures were successfully fabricated by in situ polymerization and the hydrothermal method and used as microwave absorption (MWA) materials. The surface morphologies, crystal structures, and electromagnetic features of the as-prepared samples were measured by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vector network analyzer (VNA). The results show that the conductive polymer PPy was successfully decorated on the surface of ZnO substrates. The MWA ability of flower- and rod-like ZnO/PPy composites is significantly enhanced after introduction of PPy. Rod-like ZnO/PPy composites exhibited superior MWA properties than those of flower-like ZnO/PPy. The former achieved a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −59.7 dB at 15.8 GHz with a thickness of 2.7 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < −10 dB) covered 6.4 GHz. PPy addition and stacked structure of rod-like ZnO/PPy composites can effectively improve the dielectric properties, form multiple reflections of incident electromagnetic waves, and generate an interfacial polarization effect, resulting in improved MWA properties of composite materials.

Abstract:Developing nanomaterials with efficient electromagnetic wave absorption to eliminate increasingly serious electromagnetic pollution is of great significance. The peculiar electromagnetic characteristics of one-dimensional dielectric-magnetic heterostructures bring a promising strategy for designing high-efficiency absorber. Herein, a hierarchical PPy@FeCo@PPy nanotube was fabricated through a process of oxidative polymerization and electroless plating. In the product, the FeCo nanoparticles are encapsulate in the middle of the polypyrrole (PPy) dual conductive layers, which facilitates the deep construction of heterointerfaces and simultaneously prevents magnetic agglomeration. Furthermore, the hollow structure and suitable dielectric-magnetic component optimize impedance matching. Profiting from the reasonable structural design and the strong synergistic loss mechanism of dielectric-magnetic, the coaxial multi-shell PPy@FeCo@PPy nanotube exhibits prominent electromagnetic wave absorption performance, with a minimum reflection loss of -50.5dB and the effective absorption bandwidth of 5.7GHz at 2.0mm. This work offers a gentle strategy for preparing ideal microwave absorbers by constructing dielectric-magnetic heterogeneous interfaces.
Polymerization-induced aramid nanofiber in-situ loaded poly-pyrrole for construction of ultra-strong microwave absorption aerogel

Abstract:Increasing electromagnetic (EM) radiation and EM pollution have driven extensive attention for high efficiency EM wave absorbing materials, especially aerogel-based composite absorbing materials, which are lightweight, flexible, and heat-insulating. Here, highly efficient absorbing poly-pyrrole@aramid nanofibers (Ppy@ANF) aerogels were assembled using Ppy@ANF nanofibers with core-shell structure. Ppy@ANF nanofibers were constructed for the first time by introducing a Ppy capping layer on the surface of ANF induced by ambient polymerization through a simple redox reaction. Benefit from the macroscopic porous structure of the aerogel and the microscopic core-shell structure design. The Ppy@ANF aerogels achieved an ultra-broadband absorption of 8.27 GHz at 3.43 mm, amd strong absorption characteristic with a reflection loss of −59.63 dB. Meanwhile, it had excellent thermal insulation and mechanical properties. Ppy@ANF aerogels are looked bright to be applied as flexible, lightweight, heat-insulating, and highly efficient absorbing material in wearable electronics, artificial intelligence and other high-tech fields.

Abstract:Although the excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) attenuation ability of Ti 3 C 2 T x has been wildly accepted, its high dielectric constant tends to induce severe impedance mismatching at interfaces. In this paper, PDDA modified SiCnw was electrostatically assembled with the negatively charged Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheet, for the purpose of decreasing and tuning the complex permittivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x , while constructing a large number of heterogenous interfaces to strengthen the polarization loss. Subsequently, a lightweight and porous Ti 3 C 2 T x /SiCnw hybrid aerogel was successfully obtained by a directional freeze-drying process, which shows enhanced mechanical and wave-absorbing properties compared with pure Ti 3 C 2 T x aerogel, with a strong absorption (−44.9 dB) and a broad bandwidth (9.5 GHz) in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz, as well as good structural stability and mechanical resilience. The excellent wave-absorbing performance is the synergistic result of well-matched impedance, enhanced multiple polarization losses (dipolar polarization, defect-induced polarization and interfacial polarization) and mild conduction loss. This study explores the specific ways to regulate the EMW loss mechanism, which is of great significance for the development of a new generation structure-function integrated absorber.

Abstract:To reduce electromagnetic pollution as well as increase the accuracy of high-precision electronic equipment, more attention has been paid to new electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials, which have the advantages of strong absorption, wide absorption bands, and a narrow thickness. In this study, a novel ternary type of the NiS2@rGO/polypyrrole (PPy) sandwich-like structured composites was synthesized via a facile two-step method, in which the hydrothermal method was used to prepare NiS2@rGO binary composites and then the in situ polymerization method was used to synthesize the PPy, which acted as the outer layer of the sandwich-like structure. The morphologies and electromagnetic absorption performance of the NiS2@rGO/PPy were measured and investigated. A sample with 6 wt% NiS2@rGO/PPy loading paraffin-composite obtained an outstanding reflection loss (RL) of −58.7 dB at 16.44 GHz under a thickness of 2.03 mm. Simultaneously, the effective electromagnetic wave absorption bandwidth for RL < −10 dB, which covered 7.04 to 18.00 GHz (10.96 GHz), was achieved by changing the thickness of the absorber from 2.0 to 3.5 mm. The results not only suggest that the NiS2@rGO/PPy composite has excellent performance in the field of EMW absorption but also prove that the novel sandwich-like structure can contribute to appropriate impedance matching through multiple relaxation and interfacial polarization processes.

Abstract:Carbon−based carbides have attracted tremendous attention for electromagnetic energy attenuation due to their adjustable dielectric properties, oxidation resistance, and good chemical stability. Herein, we reasonably regulate the growth of dopamine hydrochloride on the surface of the Mo−glycerate (Mo−GL) microsphere and then transform the resultant Mo−polydopamine (Mo−PD) microsphere into a dual−shell Mo2C/C (DS−Mo2C/C) microsphere in a high−temperature pyrolysis process under an inert atmosphere. It is found that the pyrolysis temperature plays an important role in the graphitization degree of the carbon matrix and internal architecture. The fabrication of a dual−shell structure can be propitious to the optimization of impedance matching, and the introduction of Mo2C nanoparticles also prompts the accumulation of polarization loss. When the pyrolysis temperature reaches 800 °C, the optimized composite of DS−Mo2C/C−800 exhibits good EM absorption performance in the frequency range of 2.0–18.0 GHz. DS−Mo2C/C−800′s qualified bandwidth can reach 4.4 GHz at a matching thickness of 1.5 mm, and the integrated qualified bandwidth (QBW) even exceeds 14.5 GHz with a thickness range of 1.5–5.0 mm. The positive effects of the dual−shell structure and Mo2C nanoparticles on EM energy attenuation may render the DS−Mo2C/C microsphere as a promising candidate for lightweight and broad bandwidth EM absorption materials in the future.

Abstract:<span>With the development of electronic communication technology, the issues of electromagnetic (EM) wave pollution have become increasingly prominent, and the requirements for EM wave absorbing materials are rising. Polypyrrole (PPy), an important type of conductive polymers, has attracted increasing attention in the applications of EM wave absorbing due to their facile synthesis process, low density, good conductivity, corrosion resistance, and stable chemical properties. Various PPy-based composite materials exhibit excellent electromagnetic absorbing properties and have been widely reported in the literature. In this review, the recent development and understanding of PPy and PPy-based composites materials in the applications of EM wave absorption are summarized in detail. In particular, as a conductive loss-type absorbing material, we focus on the design and fabrication of PPy-based composites and explore the significant impact of EM parameters on the EM wave absorbing properties. Finally, perspectives are provided for future directions of advanced PPy and PPy-based composites for microwave absorbers.</span>

Regulation of PPy Growth States by Employing Porous Organic Polymers to Obtain Excellent Microwave Absorption Performance

Abstract:PPy grows on the surface of POP single template in two states of "independent growth" and "attached growth". The POP/PPy‐200 composite with a mass filling ratio of only 24% achieved an EAB of 6.24 GHz at a thickness of only 2.34 mm. The minimum RL of −73.05 dB can be performed at a thickness of only 2.29 mm with an EAB of 5.96 GHz. Regulating the different growth states of polypyrrole (PPy) is a key strategy for obtaining PPy composites with high electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties. This work finds that the growth states of PPy is regulated by controlling the amount of pyrrole added during the preparation of composites, so as to regulate the development of conductive networks to obtain excellent EMW absorption performance. The POP/PPy‐200 composite achieves an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.24 GHz (11.76–18.00 GHz) at a thickness of only 2.34 mm, covering 100% of the Ku band. The minimum reflection loss of −73.05 dB can be demonstrated at a thickness of only 2.29 mm, while at the same time showing an EAB of 5.96 GHz to meet the requirements of "thin", "light", "wide", and "strong". Such excellent EMW absorption performance is attributed to the conductive loss caused by the regulation of the growth states of PPy and the polarization loss caused by the heterostructure. This work also addresses the key challenge that porous organic polymers (POPs) cannot be applied to EMW absorption due to poor conductivity and providing new insights into the candidates for EMW absorbing materials.

Carbon Hollow Microspheres with a Designable Mesoporous Shell for High-Performance Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Abstract:In this work, mesoporous carbon hollow microspheres (PCHMs) with designable mesoporous shell and interior void are constructed by a facile in situ stöber templating approach and a pyrolysis-etching process. The PCHMs are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra, Raman spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption and desorption system. A uniform mesoporous shell (pore size 4.7 nm) with a thickness of 55 nm and a cavity size of 345 nm is realized. The composite of paraffin mixed with 20 wt % PCHMs exhibits a minimum reflection coefficient (RC<sub>min</sub>) of -84 dB at 8.2 GHz with a sample thickness of 3.9 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.8 GHz below -10 dB (>90% electromagnetic wave is attenuated). Moreover, the composite of phenolic resin mixed with 20 wt % PCHMs exhibits an ultrawide EAB of 8 GHz below -10 dB with a thinner thickness of 2.15 mm. Such excellent electromagnetic wave absorption properties are ascribed to the large carbon-air interface in the mesoporous shell and interior void, which is favorable for the matching of characteristic impedance as compared with carbon hollow microspheres and carbon solid microspheres. Considering the excellent performance of PCHMs, we believe the as-fabricated PCHMs can be promising candidates as highly effective microwave absorbers, and the design philosophy can be extended to other spherical absorbers.

Abstract:In the last decade, electromagnetic pollution has caused people's considerable attention. Developing absorbing material with low cost, lightweight, simple preparation, and high electromagnetic attenuation efficiency has become a feasible means to deal with this problem. In this work, core-shell SiC NWs @MnO 2 @PPy (NWs: nanowires, PPy: polypyrrole) heterostructures composed of SiC nanowires core, MnO 2 nanosheets inter-layer, and PPy coating were successfully prepared through chemical vapor deposition and two-step electrodeposition process. Taking advantage of the interfacial polarization and dipole polarization, the obtained product displays excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performances with the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −50.59 dB when the matching thickness is 2.41 mm, and the optimal effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) value reaches to 6.64 GHz at a matching thickness of 2.46 mm, revealing that the SiC NWs @MnO 2 @PPy nanocomposite could be served as a promising electromagnetic wave absorbing material. On the basis of systematic analysis concerning the electromagnetic parameters, the dissipation process of the incident electromagnetic wave was demonstrated reasonably, which may provide a referable preparation strategy for novel heterostructures, especially nonmagnetic lightweight absorbing material.
