Abstract:Considering the important role that wastewater reuse plays in the water cycle and in the current water scenario immersed in a severe drought, the search for technologies that allow obtaining quality water for reuse is increasingly relevant. In this sense, the membrane biological reactor (MBR) is an alternative to traditional activated sludge systems, in which the separation of biomass and treatment water is carried out by membrane filtration instead of decantation. This study made it possible to confirm the presence of emerging pollutants in the wastewater entering the WWTPs under study, to study the behavior and performance of MBR systems with hollow fiber membranes and flat membranes in obtaining reclaimed wastewater for subsequent reuse, and to compare it with the degree of elimination obtained in conventional biological treatment. It has been demonstrated that this technology is almost 100% effective in the elimination of nutrients, organic matter, pathogens, organic micropollutants, metals, etc., and has achieved different percentages of success in eliminating emerging pollutants depending on their nature: 35% in insecticides and herbicides, 45% in anxiolytics, psychiatric drugs, and industrial disinfectants, 75% in antibiotics, and around 100% in analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and hormones. It has also contributed to the establishment of monitoring protocols for emerging pollutants in the WWTPs under study and to the evaluation of their risks, as well as the development and implementation of advanced regeneration systems that are economically favorable for increasing the quality of WWTP effluents for their reuse.

Abstract:The performance of O3-BAF process was studied for advanced treatment of paper mill secondary effluent. Results show that preozonation could destroy the molecular structure of refractory organic pollutants, and substantially increase the biodegradability of wastewater, where B/C ratio was increased from 0.21 to 0.45. Pollutants could be deeply removed by O3-BAF process, COD and turbidity were removed through the multiple activities of both ozone unit and BAF unit, NH3-N was mainly removed through biological nitrification activity of BAF unit, while UV254and colority were degraded mainly through the effect of ozone unit. After advanced treatment, the effluent could meet the newly issued discharge standard of water pollutants for pulp and paper industry.
Environmental impacts of an advanced oxidation process as tertiary treatment in a wastewater treatment plant

Abstract:Due to global water scarcity, the use of reclaimed wastewater for crop irrigation is required; however, if the wastewater treatment is inadequate, it can be a source of environmental pollution. In order to improve wastewater reclamation, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been tested. At full scale, ozonation is one such process that effectively removes micropollutants, despite its high-energy consumption. At pilot scale, other technologies such as the solar photo-Fenton process are being developed. This process is under consideration as a sustainable technology because it uses sunlight as a source of radiation. However, there is little information available on its environmental performance. In this work, we perform a comparative analysis between the ozonation and the photo-Fenton process as tertiary wastewater treatment processes used to reclaim wastewater for agricultural irrigation. We apply the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for quantifying environmental impacts with ReCiPe and USEtox as life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods. The results show that both tertiary treatment options reduce water stress locally. Ozonation has a better overall environmental performance compared to the photo-Fenton process because the environmental impact of the required ozone is smaller than of the reactants involved in the solar photo-Fenton. Moreover, the first can be operated both day and night, and therefore needs no additional storage for collecting the nightly secondary effluent, and thus has lower infrastructure related impacts. Additionally, when the solar photo-Fenton process operates at an acidic pH, there are environmental drawbacks related to the pH adjustment, which consumes a large amount of acid thus liberating CO2. Finally, the environmental impacts associated with the discharge of micropollutants to soil through the use of reclaimed water are very small compared to the other impacts generated by the treatment. However, due to the current LCIA method limitations of micropollutant impact assessment, these are subject to major uncertainty.

Abstract:Two advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), namely ozone/H2O2 and UV/H2O2, were tested at pilot scale as zero-liquid-discharge alternative treatments for the removal of microbiological (bacteria and viruses), chemical (compounds of emerging concern (CECs)) and genotoxic responses from tertiary municipal wastewater for indirect potable reuse (IPR). The AOP treated effluents were further subjected to granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption and UV disinfection, following the concept of multiple treatment barriers. As a reference, a consolidated advanced wastewater treatment train consisting of ultrafiltration, UV disinfection, and reverse osmosis (RO) was also employed. The results showed that, for the same electrical energy applied, the ozone/H2O2 treatment was more effective than the UV/H2O2 treatment in removing CECs. Specifically, the ozone/H2O2 treatment, intensified by high pressure and high mixing, achieved an average CECs removal efficiency higher than UV/H2O2 (66.8% with respect to 18.4%). The subsequent GAC adsorption step, applied downstream the AOPs, further improved the removal efficiency of the whole treatment trains, achieving rates of 98.5% and 96.8% for the ozone/H2O2 and UV/H2O2 treatments, respectively. In contrast, the ultrafiltration step of the reference treatment train only achieved a removal percentage of 22.5%, which increased to 99% when reverse osmosis was used as the final step. Microbiological investigations showed that all three wastewater treatment lines displayed good performance in the complete removal of regulated and optional parameters according to both national and the European Directive 2020/2184. Only P. aeruginosa resulted resistant to all treatments with a higher removal by UV/H2O2 when higher UV dose was applied. In addition, E. coli STEC/VTEC and enteric viruses, were found to be completely removed in all tested treatments and no genotoxic activity was detected even after a 1000-fold concentration. The obtained results suggest that the investigated treatments are suitable for groundwater recharge to be used as a potable water source being such a procedure an IPR. The intensified ozone/H2O2 or UV/H2O2 treatments can be conveniently incorporated into a multi-barrier zero-liquid-discharge scheme, thus avoiding the management issues associated with the retentate of the conventional scheme that uses reverse osmosis. By including the chemical cost associated with using 11-12 mg/L of H2O2 in the cost calculations, the overall operational cost (energy plus chemical) required to achieve 50% average CECs removal in tertiary effluent for an hypothetical full-scale plant of 250 m3/h (or 25,000 inhabitants) was 0.183 €/m3 and 0.425 €/m3 for ozone/H2O2 and UV/H2O2 treatment train, respectively.

Abstract:Wastewater reuse addresses water scarcity, but contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pose health and environmental risks. The European Union (EU) has enacted Regulation (EU) 2020/741, establishing wastewater reuse standards for agriculture. This study evaluates for the first time the effectiveness of four sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), based on the combination of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with O 3 and H 2 O 2, applied at pilot plant, for the simultaneous elimination of microorganisms, CECs, and ARGs, in actual urban wastewater treatment plant (UWWTP) effluents. The system PMS/H 2 O 2 /UV-A improved the disinfection effectiveness, compared to PMS/UV-A, especially using a molar ratio 1:3 (0.5 mM PMS:1.5 mM H 2 O 2 ), achieving complete elimination of total aerobic microorganisms in 90 min. However, this double oxidation system, does not improve CECs removal compared to PMS/UV-A in neither of the two molar ratios studied (1:1 or 1:3), and none of these treatments significantly reduced the prevalence of ARGs. However, the PMS/O 3 system demonstrated the ability to remove total aerobic microorganisms in 20 min and Escherichia coli in 5 min, 94 % of CECs, and 6 out of the 8 ARGs, demonstrating to be the most effective treatment. However, the system showed phytotoxicity, inhibiting seed growth by 10–30 %, probably associated with the by-products formed in the reaction between organic matter and ozone. This result highlights that SR-AOPs are promising processes with the capability to achieve the simultaneous removal of different contaminant groups, reducing the risks associated with wastewater reuse. Their application at larger scales is increasingly closer.

Abstract:In this study, we proposed to apply an integrated process which is comprised of in situ ozonation, ceramic membrane filtration (CMF) and biologically active carbon (BAC) filtration to wastewater reclamation for indirect potable reuse purpose. A pilot-scale (20 m3/d) experiment had been run for ten months to validate the prospect of the process in terms of treatment performance and operational stability. Results showed that the in situ O3 + CMF + BAC process performed well in pollutant removal, with chemical oxygen demand, ammonia, nitrate nitrogen, total phosphorus and turbidity levels in the treated water being 5.1 ± 0.9, 0.05 ± 0.01, 10.5 ± 0.8, <0.06 mg/L, and <0.10 NTU, respectively. Most detected trace organic compounds were degraded by>96%. This study demonstrated that synergistic effects existed in the in situ O3 + CMF + BAC process. Compared to pre-ozonation, in situ ozonation in the membrane tank was more effective in controlling membrane fouling (maintaining operational stability) and in degrading organic pollutants, which could be attributed to the higher residual ozone concentration in the tank. Because of the removal of particulate matter by CMF, water head loss of the BAC filter increased slowly and prolonged the backwashing interval to 30 days. BAC filtration was also effective in removing ammonia and N-nitrosodimethylamine from the ozonated water.

Abstract:Micropollutants (MPs) such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products are a group of emerging environmental contaminants, which are structurally complex and can cause adverse physiological effects on human health at low concentration. This study demonstrated that a hybrid process of powdered activated carbon and microfiltration membrane bioreactor (PAC-MBR) could be utilized for efficient removal of metronidazole, acetaminophen, naproxen, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, estriol (> 99 %) from source-separated urine via physical adsorption and biodegradation in a single step, without compromising the operating system stability. PAC addition to MBR improved 5 % of nitrification performance in terms of ammonia to nitrate conversion rate. Further, it improved organic removal efficiency from 88.6 ± 2.9 % to 96.0 ± 1.2 %, promoted rapid biomass growth, increased sludge floc size growth by 17 % and reduced membrane fouling propensities. This study showed the production of a micropollutant-free fertiliser from source-separated urine achieving a complete nutrient recovery in a single stage MBR system.

Abstract:Conventional purification systems can achieve low efficiency in the removal and/or degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) which are present in urban waste waters. Although biological aerobic technologies such as membrane bioreactors (MBR) have shown high effectiveness, some compounds are eliminated in a higher degree using anaerobic biological systems. This research is aimed at the study of a system which has all the advantages of both the aerobic and anaerobic biological cleansing, in order to optimize ECs, organic matter and nutrient elimination. To this end, a pilot plant operation has been analyzed, integrated by an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor (UASB) followed by a MBR with an external submerged configuration. The first phase of this research has been performed with the aerobic biomass in suspension and the second phase with supported biomass. Results confirm the synergic effect of both systems, due to the achievement of a high removal performance of the more persistent contaminants, such as carbamazepine, diclofenac, simazine, atrazine, linuron and terbuthylazine. Regarding organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus elimination, global yields were close to 98%, 45% y 35% respectively, with a particularly high performance in the supported biomass phase.

Abstract:Wastewater reclamation in the textile industry has attracted considerable attention. In this study, catalytic ozonation by regenerated granular activated carbon (rGAC) and its combination with biological activated carbon (BAC) was investigated for the reclamation of a real bio-treated dyeing and finishing wastewater (BDFW). Catalytic ozonation by rGAC (O3/rGAC) was 1.6-2.0 times more efficient than ozonation alone for pollutants degradation. Although iron oxide loaded rGAC (rGAC-Fe) improved the performance of catalytic ozonation by 14%-25%, but was labile (<2 days) compared to stable rGAC (>20 days). Catalytic ozonation improved the generation of •OH, contributing 1.1-1.7 times faster of chromophores decomposition and 0.24-0.55 times more increase of biodegradability than ozonation. However, catalytic ozonation increased the acute toxicity of BDFW by two times. The combination of O3/rGAC and BAC can synergistically reduce COD, chromophores, and color in BDFW during 45-day's continuous operation, the improvements than O3/rGAC being 21.0%, 18.8%, and 13.6%, respectively. Moreover, although O3/rGAC of BDFW increased the toxicity from 98.3 to 146.5 μg-HgCl2/L, post BAC significantly reduced the toxicity to 13.1 μg-HgCl2/L. Engineering practice of water reclamation by O3/rGAC-BAC was approved to be feasible based on both the water quality of treated water and the operation cost.
Combination of Advanced Oxidation Processes and biological treatments for wastewater decontamination—A review

Abstract:Nowadays there is a continuously increasing worldwide concern for development of alternative water reuse technologies, mainly focused on agriculture and industry. In this context, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are considered a highly competitive water treatment technology for the removal of those organic pollutants not treatable by conventional techniques due to their high chemical stability and/or low biodegradability. Although chemical oxidation for complete mineralization is usually expensive, its combination with a biological treatment is widely reported to reduce operating costs. This paper reviews recent research combining AOPs (as a pre-treatment or post-treatment stage) and bioremediation technologies for the decontamination of a wide range of synthetic and real industrial wastewater. Special emphasis is also placed on recent studies and large-scale combination schemes developed in Mediterranean countries for non-biodegradable wastewater treatment and reuse. The main conclusions arrived at from the overall assessment of the literature are that more work needs to be done on degradation kinetics and reactor modeling of the combined process, and also dynamics of the initial attack on primary contaminants and intermediate species generation. Furthermore, better economic models must be developed to estimate how the cost of this combined process varies with specific industrial wastewater characteristics, the overall decontamination efficiency and the relative cost of the AOP versus biological treatment.

Abstract:Organic micropollutants (OMPs) present in water and wastewater are in the spotlight because of their potentially harmful effects even at low concentrations and the difficulties of their elimination in urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs). This study explores the impact of some membrane filtration processes on the removal of a group of 11 OMPs with an eye on the effects of two pretreatments (i.e., coagulation and adsorption onto powdered activated carbon (PAC)) and the adsorption of OMPs onto the membranes on the overall removal. For this purpose, ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) experiments were conducted with selected OMPs spiked in ultrapure water and secondary effluents from UWWTPs. It was observed that the adsorption of OMPs onto the membranes was influenced by the characteristics of the membranes, as well as the presence of effluent organic matter (EfOM). Since adsorption was the dominant mechanism for the rejection of OMPs by UF membranes, a study of the adsorption equilibrium of the micropollutants using UF membrane pieces as the adsorbent was conducted. The adsorption isotherms for the most hydrophobic OMPs fitted the Langmuir model. The efficiency of coagulation and powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption coupled with UF were also investigated. Both pretreatments alleviated membrane fouling and improved the rejection of organic and inorganic matter. The PAC pretreatment significantly improved the removal of OMPs in the combined PAC/UF process. The best options for achieving reclaimed water with satisfactory physicochemical quality, nearly devoid of OMPs and microorganisms, and suitable for diverse reuse purposes are either the NF treatment or the combination of PAC/UF.

Post-treatment of biologically treated wastewater containing organic contaminants using a sequence of H2O2 based advanced oxidation processes: photolysis and catalytic wet oxidation

Abstract:In this paper the feasibility of a multi-barrier treatment (MBT) for the regeneration of synthetic industrial wastewater (SIWW) was evaluated. Industrial pollutants (orange II, phenol, 4-chlorophenol and phenanthrene) were added to the effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plant. The proposed MBT begins with a microfiltration membrane pretreatment (MF), followed by hydrogen peroxide photolysis (H2O2/UVC) and finishing, as a polishing step, with catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) using granular activated carbon (GAC) at ambient conditions. During the microfiltration step (0.7 μm) the decrease of suspended solids concentration, turbidity and Escherichia coli in treated water were 88, 94 and 99%, respectively. Also, the effluent's transmittance (254 nm) was increased by 14.7%. Removal of more than 99.9% of all added pollutants, mineralization of 63% of organic compounds and complete disinfection of total coliforms were reached during the H2O2/UVC treatment step (H2O2:TOC w/w ratio = 5 and an UVC average dose accumulated by wastewater 8.80 WUVC s cm(-2)). The power and efficiency of the lamp, the water transmittance and photoreactor geometry are taken into account and a new equation to estimate the accumulated dose in water is suggested. Remaining organic pollutants with a higher oxidation state of carbon atoms (+0.47) and toxic concentration of residual H2O2 were present in the effluent of the H2O2/UVC process. After 2.3 min of contact time with GAC at CWPO step, 90 and 100% of total organic carbon and residual H2O2 were removed, respectively. Also, the wastewater toxicity was studied using Vibrio fischeri and Sparus aurata larvae. The MBT operational and maintenance costs (O&M) was estimated to be 0.59 € m(-3).
Integrated spectral based monitoring, optimization and control of the combined ozonation and powdered activated carbon adsorption process to remove organic micropollutants from secondary effluent

Abstract:In this study, an innovative approach for the integrated monitoring, optimization and control of the combined ozonation (O3) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption process is introduced making use of spectral surrogates (UVA254 and EEM-PARAFAC components). The combined O3-PAC process is designed to remove organic micropollutants (µP) from secondary effluent. Therefore, the removal of 6 µP with varying ozone reactivity was systematically studied in both O3 and PAC as stand-alone systems and in the combined O3-PAC system. For the latter, adsorption experiments were performed with µP spiked into ozonated secondary effluent (sequential system) and with µP spiked into the initial secondary effluent before ozonation (integrated system). In accordance with Swiss standards, the goal was to achieve 80% atrazine removal (as a model O3 recalcitrant compound) at optimized O3 and PAC doses. An ozone dose ranging from 0.45 to 0.65 mg O3/mg DOC was more cost-effective in promoting subsequent PAC adsorption (less than 40%), particularly at low PAC doses (1-2 mg PAC/mg (initial (DOC))). The classical ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) model could not be used to predict the subsequent PAC dose after ozonation in the integrated system. Therefore, correlation models were established between (i) the reduction of spectral surrogates during both O3 and PAC dosing and µP removal, (ii) the reduction of spectral surrogates during ozonation and the related PAC dose of the subsequent adsorption process and (iii) between the reduction of spectral surrogates during ozonation and the integrated process. Based on these correlation models, an online spectral control strategy was developed and implemented. Finally, the optimal dosing strategy for 80% atrazine removal was determined as 0.5 mg O3/mg DOC and 1.4 mg PAC/mg (initial) DOC.

Abstract:The Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive recent draft issued last October 2022 pays attention to contaminants of emerging concern including organic micropollutants (OMPs) and requires the removal of some of them at large urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) calling for their upgrading. Many investigations to date have reported the occurrence of a vast group of OMPs in the influent and many technologies have been tested for their removal at a lab- or pilot-scale. Moreover, it is well-known that hospital wastewater (HWW) contains specific OMPs at high concentration and therefore its management and treatment deserves attention. In this study, a 1-year investigation was carried out at a full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating mainly HWW. To promote the removal of OMPs, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was added to the bioreactor at 0.1 g/L and 0.2 g/L which resulted in the MBR operating as a hybrid MBR. Its performance was tested for 232 target and 90 non-target OMPs, analyzed by UHPLC-QTOF-MS using a direct injection method. A new methodology was defined to select the key compounds in order to evaluate the performance of the treatments. It was based on their frequency, occurrence, persistence to removal, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Finally, an environmental risk assessment of the OMP residues was conducted by means of the risk quotient approach. The results indicate that PAC addition increased the removal of most of the key OMPs (e.g., sulfamethoxazole, diclofenac, lidocaine) and OMP classes (e.g., antibiotics, psychiatric drugs and stimulants) with the highest loads in the WWTP influent. The hybrid MBR also reduced the risk in the receiving water as the PAC dosage increased mainly for spiramycin, lorazepam, oleandomycin. Finally, uncertainties and issues related to the investigation being carried out at full-scale under real conditions are discussed.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to develop an innovative and advanced integrated "membrane and oxidation" system for the treatment of domestic wastewater by coupling membrane bioreactor (MBR), nanofiltration (NF) and ozonation. Five contaminants were selected (acetaminophen, carbamazepin, sulfamethoxazole, tetracyclin and terbutryn). The MBR effluent samples have been fully characterized using conventional analysis (COD, TOC, UV254, ionic chromatography…) and advanced characterization analyses (3D fluorescence excitation–emission matrices (3DEEM)) before being spiked with 1 ppm of each of the selected pharmaceuticals. NF process experiments were carried out in batch and semi-batch mode using a flat sheet membrane system (NF-90). Selected OMPs were well rejected by NF (between 84 % and 98 %) and the main fouling mechanisms observed were pore blocking and gel layer formation. MBR effluent was then pre-treated in an ozonation pilot unit's with ozone gas inlet fixed at 5 g.Nm−3.The complete degradation by ozonation of carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole took 15–20 min and more than 30 min for terbutryn. Acetaminophen, tetracyclin and dissolved organic matter were almost totally ozonated in 5 min. The overall mineralization rate was low. The pre-ozonation enables the NF fouling resistance to be decreased by almost 40 %.

Abstract:Decentralised wastewater treatment is becoming a suitable strategy to reduce cost and environmental impact. In this research, the performance of two technologies treating black water (BW) and grey water (GW) fractions of urban sewage is carried out in a decentralised treatment of the wastewater produced in three office buildings. An Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) treating BW and a Hybrid preanoxic Membrane Bioreactor (H-MBR) containing small plastic carrier elements, treating GW were operated at pilot scale. Their potential on reducing the release of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) such as Organic Micropollutants (OMPs), Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) and pathogens was studied. After 226 d of operation, a stable operation was achieved in both systems: the AnMBR removed 92.4 ± 2.5 % of influent COD, and H-MBR removed 89.7 ± 3.5 %. Regarding OMPs, the profile of compounds differed between BW and GW, being BW the matrix with more compounds detected at higher concentrations (up to μg L −1 ). For example, in the case of ibuprofen the concentrations in BW were 23.63 ± 3.97 μg L −1 , 3 orders of magnitude higher than those detected in GW. The most abundant ARGs were sulfonamide resistant genes ( sul1) and integron class 1 ( intl1) in both BW and GW. Pathogenic bacteria counts were reduced between 1 and 3 log units in the AnMBR. Bacterial loads in GW were much lower than in BW, being no bacterial re-growth observed for the GW effluents after treatment in the H-MBR. None of the selected enteric viruses was detected in GW treatment line.

Abstract:A membrane ozone contactor, operated under continuous mode, was applied to promote the tertiary treatment of urban wastewater (UWW), targeting the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), bacterial disinfection, and toxicity reduction. This system relies on the homogeneous radial distribution of ozone (O3) in the reaction zone by "titration" through a microfiltration borosilicate tubular membrane, while the UWW swirls around the membrane and drags the O3 microbubbles generated in the membrane shell-side. The membrane is coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2-P25) and radiation can be externally supplied via four UV lamps. The ozonation tests were carried out with secondary-treated UWW collected in different seasons (winter and summer) and spiked with a mix of 19 CECs (10 μg L-1 each). For an O3 dose of 18 g m-3, the best performance was obtained by increasing the O3 concentration (maximum [O3]G,inlet of 200 g Nm-3) and decreasing the gas flow rate (minimum QG of 0.15 Ndm3 min-1), providing the highest ozone transfer yield (88 %) and, thus higher specific ozone dose (g O3 per g dissolved organic carbon). Under these conditions, removals >80 % or concentrations below the limit of quantification were obtained for up to 13 of the 19 CECs and reductions up to 5 log units for total heterotrophs and below the limit of detection for enterobacteria and enterococci. Tests including a UVC dose of 0.10 kJ L-1 enhanced disinfection ability but had no impact on CECs oxidation. After ozonation, the abundance of antibiotic resistant bacteria was reduced but not eliminated, and microbial regrowth after 3-day storage was observed. No toxic effect was detected on zebrafish embryos using a dilution factor of 4 for the ozonized UWW and when granular activated carbon adsorption was subsequently applied the dilution factor decreased to 2.

Abstract:The rapid growth of population and the effects of climate change have placed unprecedented pressure on urban water supplies and pollution control. Consequently, it is essential to explore new local water resources in water-strained areas. To this end, this work focuses on evaluating pollutant removal effectiveness of decentralized treatment systems for groundwater reclamation. Two pilot-scale treatment trains, Treatment Line 1 (L1) and Treatment Line 2 (L2), which use membrane-free (with granulated activated carbon as the main process) or membrane-based (with reverse osmosis as the primary technology), were compared for their effectiveness in reducing concentrations of organic contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Additionally, the effect of sodium hypochlorite addition for biofilm control on the contaminant removal performance was also examined. Results from the analysis of nearly 120 trace organic compounds (only 21 were detected in the raw water) showed that L2 significantly overperformed L1. Furthermore, the addition of a pre-chlorination step did not improve the removal performance. Regarding trace organic compounds, L1 without pre-chlorination averaged an overall good removal performance (94 ± 12%). However, Irbesartan, gemfibrozil and gabapentin showed moderate removals (50-90%) and Valsartan was poorly removed (<50%). After pre-chlorinating L1, the overall removal performance decreased (86 ± 20%). Nearly one third of the target contaminants showed moderate removal (50-90%), with Irbesartan and Valsartan exhibiting poor attenuations (<50%), highlighting that negatively-charged compounds were challenging to eliminate. In contrast, L2 exhibited very high removals (>99%) on all studied trace organic contaminants regardless of pre-chlorination. Our study also identified several indicator compounds to monitor CEC removal. Finally, considering the trade-offs between cost and final water use (non-potable), L1-based schemes with intermittent pre-chlorination could be the preferred implementation option. The results of this work will offer valuable insights into decentralized treatment systems, assisting decision-makers in choosing suitable approaches for sustainable urban water management.

Abstract:A technical and environmental evaluation of an innovative scheme for the co-treatment of domestic wastewater and domestic organic waste (DOW) was undertaken by coupling an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a fermentation reactor. Alternative treatment configurations were evaluated with different waste collection practices as well as various schemes for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. All treatment systems fulfilled the required quality of the treated effluent in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations. However, only the configurations performing the short-cut nitrification/denitrification with biological phosphorus removal met the specifications for water reuse. The environmental assessment included the analysis of impacts on climate change (CC), freshwater eutrophication (FE) and marine eutrophication (ME). A functional unit (FU) of 2000 people receiving treatment services was considered. The most relevant sources of environmental impacts were associated to the concentration of dissolved methane in the UASB effluent that is emitted to the atmosphere in the SBR process (accounting for 41% of impacts in CC), electricity consumption, mainly for aeration in the SBR (representing 14% of the impacts produced in CC), and the discharge of the treated effluent in receiving waters (contributing 98% and 57% of impacts in FE and ME, respectively). The scheme of separate waste collection together with biological nitrogen removal and phosphorus uptake via nitrite was identified as the best configuration, with good treated effluent quality and environmental impacts lower than those of the other examined configurations.
