Abstract:We investigate a kind of noise-induced transition to noisy chaos in dynamical systems. Due to similar phenomenological structures of stable hyperbolic attractors excited by various physical realizations from a given stationary random process, a specific Poincaré map is established for stochastically perturbed quasi-Hamiltonian system. Based on this kind of map, various point sets in the Poincaré’s cross-section and dynamical transitions can be analyzed. Results from the customary Duffing oscillator show that, the point sets in the Poincaré’s global cross-section will be highly compressed in one direction, and extend slowly along the deterministic period-doubling bifurcation trail in another direction when the strength of the harmonic excitation is fixed while the strength of the stochastic excitation is slowly increased. This kind of transition is called the noise-induced point-overspreading route to noisy chaos.

Abstract:The homoclinic bifurcation and chaos in a system of weakly coupled simple pendulum and harmonic oscillator subject to light dampings and weakly external and (or) parametric excitation of bounded noise is studied. The random Melnikov process is derived and mean-square criteria is used to determine the threshold amplitude of the bounded noise for the onset of chaos in the system. The threshold amplitude is also determined by vanishing the numerically calculated maximal Lyapunov exponent. The threshold amplitudes are further confirmed by using the Poincare maps, which indicate the path from periodic motion to chaos or from random motion to random chaos in the system as the amplitude of bounded noise increases.

Abstract:The transition from the low-amplitude, aperiodic fluctuation to thermoacoustic instability is usually treated as a Hopf bifurcation, but the transition incorporates complex dynamical behaviors. Intermittent oscillations commonly occur in the transition process wherein chaotic states alternate with limit cycle oscillations and both the chaotic state and the limit cycle oscillation last with no fixed period. Intermittent oscillations that occur in the thermoacoustic system are demonstrated to be deterministic. A Koopman linearization procedure is implemented to model the intermittent combustion oscillations in the backward-facing step combustor. The nonlinear dynamics of intermittent combustion oscillations are approximated as a forced linear system in an orthogonal space, which is constructed by singular value decomposition of a delay coordinates matrix. The phase space of an intermittent combustion oscillation can be divided into linear and nonlinear regions by the magnitude of the nonlinear term in the forced linear system. As a result, intermittent combustion oscillations can be described as the transition between chaotic states and limit cycle oscillations, and the transition occurs when the nonlinear term is large.

Abstract:We present recent results on noise-induced transitions in a nonlinear oscillator with randomly modulated frequency. The presence of stochastic perturbations drastically alters the dynamical behaviour of the oscillator: noise can wash out a global attractor but can also have a constructive role by stabilizing an unstable fixed point. The random oscillator displays a rich phenomenology but remains elementary enough to allow for exact calculations: this system is thus a useful paradigm for the study of noise-induced bifurcations and is an ideal testing ground for various mathematical techniques. We show that the phase is determined by the sign of the Lyapunov exponent (which can be calculated non-perturbatively for white noise), and we derive the full phase diagram of the system. We also investigate the effect of time-correlations of the noise on the phase diagram and show that a smooth random perturbation is less efficient than white noise. We study the critical behaviour near the transition and explain why noise-induced transitions often exhibit intermittency and multiscaling: these effects do not depend on the amplitude of the noise but rather on its power spectrum. By increasing or filtering out the low frequencies of the noise, intermittency and multiscaling can be enhanced or eliminated.

Abstract:Tipping in multistable systems occurs usually by varying the input slightly, resulting in the output switching to an often unsatisfactory state. This phenomenon is manifested in thermoacoustic systems. This thermoacoustic instability may lead to the disintegration of rocket engines, gas turbines and aeroengines, so it is necessary to design control measures for its suppression. It was speculated that such unwanted instability states may be dodged by changing quickly enough the bifurcation parameters. Thus, in this work, based on a fundamental mathematical model of thermoacoustic systems driven by colored noise, the corresponding Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation of the amplitude is derived by using a stochastic averaging method. A transient dynamical behavior is identified through a probability density analysis. We find that the rate of change of parameters and the correlation time of the noise are helpful to dodge thermoacoustic instability, while a relatively large noise intensity is a disadvantageous factor. In addition, power-law relationships between the maximum amplitude and the noise parameters are explored, and the probability of successfully dodging a thermoacoustic instability is calculated. These results serve as a guide to the design of engines and to propose an effective control strategy, which is of great significance to aerospace-related fields.

Abstract:In this work, the effects of background noises on nonlinear dynamics of a modelled standing-wave thermoacoustic system with subcritical Hopf bifurcation behaviors are studied. These noises include (1) pressure-coupled (acoustic), (2) velocity-coupled (flow), and (3) external combustion noise. It is found that these three types of background noises play important, but different roles in changing the hysteresis width and stability boundary. In addition, the stochastic transition from stability to instability is investigated, as the noise intensity is varied. Two different stochastic P-bifurcations are identified. One is related to a craterlike probability density distribution. The other is associated with a probability density distribution characterized with two peaks and one trough. With each type of noise affecting the system's stochastic behaviors being evaluated, the effect of two different types of noises is then studied. It is shown that the combined noises (types 1 and 2) cannot only destabilize global stable thermoacoustic system, but also stabilize linearly unstable system. This depends strongly on the superimposition form of the two types of noises. In addition, when the thermoacoustic system is disturbed by the combined noise (types 3 and 1 or types 3 and 2), the transition process is dominated by the combustion noise.
Rate-dependent tipping-delay phenomenon in a thermoacoustic system with colored noise

Abstract:Tipping is a phenomenon in multistable systems where small changes in inputs cause huge changes in outputs. When the parameter varies within a certain time scale, the rate will affect the tipping behaviors. These behaviors are undesirable in thermoacoustic systems, which are widely used in aviation, power generation and other industries. Thus, this paper aims at considering the tipping behaviors of the thermoacoustic system with the time-varying parameters and the combined excitations of additive and multiplicative colored noises. Transient dynamical behaviors for the proposed thermoacoustic model are implemented through the reduced Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation derived by a standard stochastic averaging method. Then, the tipping problems of the rate-dependent thermoacoustic systems with random fluctuations are studied by virtue of the obtained probability density functions. Our results show that the rate delays the value of the tipping parameter compared to the one with the quasi-steady assumption, which is called as a rate-dependent tipping-delay phenomenon. Besides, the influences of the initial values, the rate, the changing time of the parameters, and the correlation time of the noises on the rate-dependent tipping-delay phenomenon are analyzed in detail. These results are of great significance for research in related fields such as aviation and land gas turbines.

Abstract:We develop a framework for the general interpretation of the stochastic dynamical system near a limit cycle. Such quasi-periodic dynamics are commonly found in a variety of nonequilibrium systems, including the spontaneous oscillations of hair cells in the inner ear. We demonstrate quite generally that in the presence of noise, the phase of the limit cycle oscillator will diffuse while deviations in the directions locally orthogonal to that limit cycle will display the Lorentzian power spectrum of a damped oscillator. We identify two mechanisms by which these stochastic dynamics can acquire a complex frequency dependence, and discuss the deformation of the mean limit cycle as a function of temperature. The theoretical ideas are applied to data obtained from spontaneously oscillating hair cells of the amphibian sacculus.

Hydrogen-Triggered Type I X-ray Bursts in a Two-Zone Model

Abstract:We use the two-zone model of Cooper & Narayan to study the onset and time evolution of hydrogen-triggered type I X-ray bursts on accreting neutron stars. At the lowest accretion rates, thermally unstable hydrogen burning ignites helium as well and produces a mixed hydrogen and helium burst. For somewhat higher accretion rates, thermally unstable hydrogen burning does not ignite helium and thus triggers only a weak hydrogen flash. The peak luminosities of weak hydrogen flashes are typically much lower than the accretion luminosity. These results are in accord with previous theoretical work. We find that a series of weak hydrogen flashes generates a massive layer of helium that eventually ignites in an energetic pure helium flash. Although previously conjectured, this is the first time such bursting behavior has been actually demonstrated in a theoretical model. For yet higher accretion rates, hydrogen burning is thermally stable and thus steadily generates a layer of helium that ultimately ignites in a pure helium flash. We find that, for a narrow range of accretion rates between the mixed hydrogen and helium burst and weak hydrogen flash regimes, unstable hydrogen burning ignites helium only after a short series of weak hydrogen flashes has generated a sufficiently deep layer of helium. These bursts have fluences that are intermediate between those of normal mixed hydrogen and helium bursts and energetic pure helium flashes.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we report an experimental investigation on the influence of colored noise (generated by the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) process) on thermoacoustic coupling in an electro-acoustic Rijke tube simulator. In the absence of noise, the simulator exhibits subcritical Hopf bifurcation. Although noise in a practical system has a finite correlation time, yet the system identification methods are based on the assumption of white noise. In this study, we investigate the effects of correlation time, and intensity of colored noise on the estimation of the growth rates of acoustic oscillations determined using Fokker–Planck equation in stable, bistable, and linearly unstable regions. Subsequently, we compare the findings against results obtained considering white noise approximations. We report the observed deviation of the estimated growth rates from the actual values as a function of noise intensity and correlation time. We find that with the colored noise model, the deviation in the estimated growth rates lies within the range of 0–10% compared to the deviation of 5–25% observed considering the white noise approximation. We also report that increasing noise amplitudes leads up to a deviation of approximately 30% in the estimated growth rates from the actual values.

Abstract:Bistability generated via a pure noise-induced phase transition is reexamined from the view of bifurcations in macroscopic cumulant dynamics. It allows an analytical study of the phase diagram in more general cases than previous methods. In addition using this approach we investigate patially-extended systems with two degrees of freedom per site. For this system, the analytic solution of the stationary Fokker-Planck equation is not available and a standard mean field approach cannot be used to find noise induced phase transitions. A new approach based on cumulant dynamics predicts a noise-induced phase transition through a Hopf bifurcation leading to a macroscopic limit cycle motion, which is confirmed by numerical simulation.
Condensation in the phase space and network topology during transition from chaos to order in turbulent thermoacoustic systems

Abstract:The emergence of oscillatory dynamics (order) from chaotic fluctuations is a well-known phenomenon in turbulent thermoacoustic, aero-acoustic, and aeroelastic systems and is often detrimental to the system. We study the dynamics of two distinct turbulent thermoacoustic systems, bluff-body and swirl-stabilized combustors, where the transition occurs from the state of combustion noise (chaos) to thermoacoustic instability (order) via the route of intermittency. Using unweighted complex networks built from phase space cycles of the acoustic pressure oscillations, we characterize the topology of the phase space during various dynamical states in these combustors. We propose the use of network centrality measures derived from cycle networks as a novel means to characterize the number and stability of periodic orbits in the phase space and to study the topological transformations in the phase space during the emergence of order from chaos in the combustors. During the state of combustion noise, we show that the phase space consists of several unstable periodic orbits, which influence the phase space trajectory. As order emerges in the system dynamics, the number of periodic orbits decreases and their stability increases. At the onset of oscillatory dynamics, the phase space consists of a stable periodic orbit. We also use network centrality measures to identify the onset of thermoacoustic instability in both the combustors. Finally, we propose that the onset of oscillatory instabilities in turbulent systems is analogous to Bose-Einstein condensation transition observed for bosons, if we define phase space cycles as particles and the periodic orbits as energy levels.
Noise-induced transitions past the onset of a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation: the case of the sudden expansion

Abstract:We consider fluid flows, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, subject to a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation and forced by a weak noise acting on a slow time scale. By generalizing the multiple-scale weakly nonlinear expansion technique employed in the literature for the response of the Duffing oscillator, we rigorously derive a stochastically forced Stuart-Landau equation for the dominant symmetry-breaking mode. The probability density function of the solution, and of the escape time from one attractor to the other, are then determined by solving the associated Fokker-Planck equation. The validity of this reduced order model is tested on the flow past a sudden expansion, for a given Reynolds number and different noise amplitudes. At a very low numerical cost, the statistics obtained from the amplitude equation accurately reproduce those of long-time direct numerical simulations.

Abstract:Complex dynamical systems may exhibit multiple steady states, including time-periodic limit cycles, where the final trajectory depends on initial conditions. With tuning of parameters, limit cycles can proliferate or merge at an exceptional point. Here we ask how dynamics in the vicinity of such a bifurcation are influenced by noise. A pitchfork bifurcation can be used to induce bifurcation behavior. We model a limit cycle with the normal form of the Hopf oscillator, couple it to the pitchfork, and investigate the resulting dynamical system in the presence of noise. We show that the generating functional for the averages of the dynamical variables factorizes between the pitchfork and the oscillator. The statistical properties of the pitchfork in the presence of noise in its various regimes are investigated and a scaling theory is developed for the correlation and response functions, including a possible symmetry-breaking field. The analysis is done by perturbative calculations as well as numerical means. Finally, observables illustrating the coupling of a system with a limit cycle to a pitchfork are discussed and the phase-phase correlations are shown to exhibit nondiffusive behavior with universal scaling. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.024220 ©2024 American Physical Society

Synchronization based model for turbulent thermoacoustic systems

Abstract:We present a phenomenological reduced-order model to capture the transition to thermoacoustic instability in turbulent combustors. The model is based on the framework of synchronization and considers the acoustic field and the unsteady heat release rate from turbulent reactive flow as two nonlinearly coupled sub-systems. Previous experimental studies have reported a route from low amplitude chaotic oscillation (i. e. combustion noise) to periodic oscillations through intermittency in turbulent combustors. By varying the coupling strength, our proposed model can replicate the route that is observed in experiments. Instead of assessing combustion noise as background noise to the system, the model considered a coupled oscillator system that produces multifractal chaotic oscillations to represent the combustion noise. This set of coupled oscillators is then nonlinearly coupled to a linear oscillator representing the acoustic field. As the coupling strength increases, the system loses its multifractality and exhibits large-amplitude periodic oscillations in a manner consistent with the dynamics observed in experimental studies.

Abstract:I consider the problem of self-oscillatory systems undergoing a homogeneous Hopf bifurcation when they are submitted to an external forcing that is periodic in time, at a frequency close to the system's natural frequency (1:1 resonance), and whose amplitude is slowly modulated in space. Starting from a general, unspecified model and making use of standard multiple scales analysis, I show that the close-to-threshold dynamics of such systems is universally governed by a generalized, complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. The nature of the generalization depends on the strength and of other features of forcing: (i) For generic, sufficiently weak forcings the CGL equation contains an extra, inhomogeneous term proportional to the complex amplitude of forcing, as in the usual 1:1 resonance with spatially uniform forcing; (ii) For stronger perturbations, whose amplitude sign alternates across the system, the CGL equation contains a term proportional to the complex conjugate of the oscillations envelope, like in the classical 2:1 resonance, responsible for the emergence of phase bistability and of phase bistable patterns in the system. Finally I show that case (ii) is retrieved from case (i) in the appropriate limit so that the latter can be regarded as the generic model for the close-to-threshold dynamics of the type of systems considered here. The kind of forcing studied in this work thus represents an alternative to the classical parametric forcing at twice the natural frequency of oscillations and opens the way to new forms of pattern formation control in self-oscillatory systems, what is especially relevant in the case of systems that are quite insensitive to parametric forcing, such as lasers and other nonlinear optical cavities.

Abstract:We present the effect of noise on the hysteresis characteristics of a prototypical thermoacoustic system, a horizontal Rijke tube. As we increase the noise intensity, we find that the width of the hysteresis zone decreases. However, we find that the rate of decrease in hysteresis width is constant for all the mass flow rates considered in the present study. We also show that the subcritical transition observed in the absence of noise is no longer discernible once the intensity of noise is above a threshold value and the transition appears to be continuous. We compare our experimental observations with the results obtained from a numerical model perturbed with additive Gaussian white noise and we find a qualitative agreement between the experimental and the numerical results.

Abstract:The dynamics of unstable sound waves in a nonequilibrium vibrationally excited gas is considered with allowance for viscosity and thermal conductivity. A numerical model has been constructed and a computational tool has been developed to study the linear and nonlinear stages of the development of acoustic instability in a nonequilibrium gas with different models of relaxation, heating, and cooling times. The numerical model has a high spatial resolution and second order accuracy. It is shown that at the initial stage small disturbances generated by a sound source grow exponentially in accordance with conclusions of the linear theory. At the nonlinear stage of the development of acoustic instability, a sawtooth system of weak shock waves (SWs) is first formed; then, due to the interaction (merging) of SWs, a quasi-stationary system of high-intensity shock wave pulses (SWPs) is formed.
