Abstract:2D conjugated charge‐transfer polymers hold the fundamental importance of both atomically defined molecular structures and unique spatial confinement for distinctive and exotic material properties. However, such 2D crystalline networks exhibit a fundamental processing challenge in polymer science and molecular assembly, which precludes emerging applications for 2D polymers. Here, an operationally simple solvothermal crystallization of conjugated charge‐transfer polymer into a freestanding and ultrathin 2D nanosheet directed by electrostatic recognition, π–π interaction, and charge‐transfer complexation is reported. High flexibility and 3D stacking capability of ultrathin 2D conjugated polymers provide a robust solution‐processing platform to uncover their emerging optoelectronics and multisensing capabilities. Resembling covalent organic framework assembly, these materials potentially open up a new exciting field of 2D conjugated networks with the structure flexibility and materials‐by‐design opportunities for all organic electronics.
Recent Progress in Design of Conductive Polymers to Improve the Thermoelectric Performance

Abstract:Organic semiconductors, especially polymer semiconductors, have attracted extensive attention as organic thermoelectric materials due to their capabilities for flexibility, low-cost fabrication, solution processability and low thermal conductivity. However, it is challenging to obtain high-performance organic thermoelectric materials because of the low intrinsic carrier concentration of organic semiconductors. The main method to control the carrier concentration of polymers is the chemical doping process by charge transfer between polymer and dopant. Therefore, the deep understanding of doping mechanisms from the point view of chemical structure has been highly desired to overcome the bottlenecks in polymeric thermoelectrics. In this contribution, we will briefly review the recently emerging progress for discovering the structure–property relationship of organic thermoelectric materials with high performance. Highlights include some achievements about doping strategies to effectively modulate the carrier concentration, the design rules of building blocks and side chains to enhance charge transport and improve the doping efficiency. Finally, we will give our viewpoints on the challenges and opportunities in the field of polymer thermoelectric materials.
Probing the Nature of Charge Carriers in One-dimensional Conjugated Polymers: A Review on the Theoretical Models, Experimental Trends, and Thermoelectric Applications

Abstract:Since the first discovery of polyacetylene in the late 1970s, the one-dimensional (1D) conjugated polymers have attracted immense research interest as a result of their high conductivity, wide and tunable band gap, and solution processibility, making them extraordinary materials for the next-generation organic electronics, photovoltaics, and thermoelectrics. Recently, more research interest has been devoted in integrating the 1D conjugated polymers with organic tissues, e.g., implantable electrodes and electronic plants, as their excellent biofunctions and biocompatibilities are demonstrated. However, to achieve optimal material designs for the 1D conjugated polymers in practical applications, it is essential to understand their fundamental charge transport mechanisms. Current reviews are mainly focused on the functional properties and applications of the conjugated polymers while the theoretical models for charge transport and their correlations to the experimental observations are barely discussed systematically. In this review article, we try to elucidate the nature of the charge carriers by taking the total footprints of the research and developments in conjugated polymers for consideration, from molecular orbitals to thermally-activated conductivity. The electronic structures and mathematical description of the charge carriers, i.e., solitons, polarons, bipolarons, are discussed and analyzed based on the frontier molecular orbital theory, non-interacting model, Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, density functional theory, and Holstein-based models. The predicted electronic structures for the charge carriers are model-dependent which can be either weakly or strongly correlated to the coulomb interactions in the valence and conduction bands. Origins of the optical signatures of the charge carriers, e.g., polarons and bipolarons, in the visible, near infrared, and mid infrared ranges are described and discussed, which may provide semi-quantitative information on the conjugation length and delocalization of the charge carriers. Experimental observations on the spectroscopic characteristics of the charge carriers and their correlations to the molecular configuration, conductivity, crystallinity, and composition of the conjugated polymers are carefully reviewed and compared based on the doping induced dopant-host interactions. The transport mechanism of the charge carriers can be described two-dimensionally in the microscale, and probed by analyzing the thermoelectric properties of the conjugated polymers and modelling the thermally-activated conductivity as a function of the thermopower at a device scale.

Design Rules to Maximize Charge-Carrier Mobility along Conjugated Polymer Chains

Abstract:The emergence of polymeric materials displaying high charge-carrier mobility values despite poor interchain structural order has spawned a renewal of interest in the identification of structure-property relationships pertaining to the transport of charges along conjugated polymer chains and the subsequent design of optimized architectures. Here, we present the results of intrachain charge transport simulations obtained by applying a robust surface hopping algorithm to a phenomenological Hamiltonian parametrized against first-principles simulations. Conformational effects are shown to provide a clear signature in the temperature-dependent charge-carrier mobility that complies with recent experimental observations. We further contrast against molecular crystals the evolution with electronic bandwidth and electron-phonon interactions of the room-temperature mobility in polymers, showing that intrachain charge-carrier mobility values in excess of 100 cm(2)/(V s) can be achieved through a proper chemical engineering of the backbones.

Abstract:Self-organization in many solution-processed, semiconducting conjugated polymers results in complex microstructures, in which ordered microcrystalline domains are embedded in an amorphous matrix1. This has important consequences for electrical properties of these materials: charge transport is usually limited by the most difficult hopping processes and is therefore dominated by the disordered matrix, resulting in low charge-carrier mobilities2 (⩽10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1). Here we use thin-film, field-effect transistor structures to probe the transport properties of the ordered microcrystalline domains in the conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT. Self-organization in P3HT results in a lamella structure with two-dimensional conjugated sheets formed by interchain stacking. We find that, depending on processing conditions, the lamellae can adopt two different orientations—parallel and normal to the substrate—the mobilities of which differ by more than a factor of 100, and can reach values as high as 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 (refs 3, 4). Optical spectroscopy of the field-induced charge, combined with the mobility anisotropy, reveals the two-dimensional interchain character of the polaronic charge carriers, which exhibit lower relaxation energies than the corresponding radical cations on isolated one-dimensional chains. The possibility of achieving high mobilities via two-dimensional transport in self-organized conjugated lamellae is important for applications of polymer transistors in logic circuits5 and active-matrix displays4,6.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers and molecular semiconductors are emerging as a viable semiconductor technology in industries such as displays, electronics, renewable energy, sensing and healthcare. A key enabling factor has been significant scientific progress in improving their charge transport properties and carrier mobilities, which has been made possible by a better understanding of the molecular structure–property relationships and the underpinning charge transport physics. Here we aim to present a coherent review of how we understand charge transport in these high-mobility van der Waals bonded semiconductors. Specific questions of interest include estimates for intrinsic limits to the carrier mobilities that might ultimately be achievable; a discussion of the coupling between charge and structural dynamics; the importance of molecular conformations and mesoscale structural features; how the transport physics of conjugated polymers and small molecule semiconductors are related; and how the incorporation of counterions in doped films—as used, for example, in bioelectronics and thermoelectric devices—affects the electronic structure and charge transport properties.

Abstract:A two‐step structural design strategy is proposed and applied to conjugated polymers for achieving both high conductivity and a high Seebeck coefficient. The first step enhances the backbone planarity, enhancing the conductivity by improved ordering of conjugated polymers. The second step fluorinates the backbone, improving the Seebeck coefficient by the controlled induction of energetic disorder. The trade‐off between enhancing conductivity (σ) through doping while concurrently observing a reduction in the Seebeck coefficient (S) presents a key challenge in organic thermoelectrics. Here, a two‐step structural design strategy is developed, where the first step enhances the backbone planarity which enhances the conductivity by an improved ordering of conjugated polymers (CPs). The second step, which is fluorination of the backbone, improves the Seebeck coefficient by the controlled induction of energetic disorder, stemming from the fluorine's disruption of the homogeneous electrostatic potential across the CP backbone. This strategy is applied to two series of donor‐acceptor (D‐A) types of CPs based on the BDT donor unit and BDD and TT as acceptor units, respectively. A maximum power factor (PF) over 155 (142.7 ± 12.7) μW m−1 K−2, coupled with S ≈202 (194.6 ± 7.6) μV K−1 is achieved, leading to up to 32‐fold enhancement of the PF compared to the initial non‐planar and non‐fluorinated polymer. This study provides valuable conceptual insights for designing CPs with high conductivity and Seebeck coefficient.

Abstract:Thanks to the combined efforts of scientists in several research fields, the preceding decade has witnessed considerable progress in the use of conjugated polymers as emerging thermoelectric materials leading to significant improvements in performance and demonstration of a number of diverse applications. Despite these recent advances, systematic assessments of the impact of molecular design on thermoelectric properties are scarce. Although several reviews marginally highlight the role of chemical structure, the understanding of structure-performance relationships is still fragmented. An in-depth understanding of the relationship between molecular structure and thermoelectric properties will enable the rational design of next-generation thermoelectric polymers. To this end, this review showcases the state-of-the-art thermoelectric polymers, discusses structure-performance relationships, suggests strategies for improving thermoelectric performance that go beyond molecular design, and highlights some of the most impressive applications of thermoelectric polymers.

Boosting the Seebeck Coefficient for Organic Coordination Polymers: Role of Doping-Induced Polaron Band Formation.

Abstract:Organic polymers are becoming emerging thermoelectric materials. Tremendous progress has been achieved for p-type doping, but efficient n-type organic materials are still rare. By investigating potassium-doped n-type poly(nickel-ethylenetetrathiolate) using density functional theory coupled with Boltzmann transport equation, we find that (i) formation of the electron polaron band (EPB) split from the conduction band (CB) dominates electron transport; (ii) at low doping concentration, the upper CB gets involved in transport in addition to the EPB as the temperature rises, leading to a highly elevated Seebeck coefficient and power factor; and (iii) at even higher temperature, because the CB starts to dominate, the Seebeck coefficient levels off and then decreases with temperature. Such an "exotic" nonmonotonic temperature effect has been found in experiment but has never been explained. We find that such behavior is primarily due to a polaron effect. A doping-induced polaron band can be employed to boost the Seebeck coefficient, making the organic coordination polymer a peculiar n-type thermoelectric material.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials can realize the direct transformation between heat and electricity, thereby facilitating the recycling of waste heat. Semiconducting pi-conjugated polymers (pi-CPs) have been largely explored as organic TE materials thanks to the facile molecular tunability of their electronic properties, their room-temperature solution-processability, their intrinsic low thermal conductivity, and their outstanding mechanical flexibility. In this Focus Review, we describe two key strategies-chemical doping and structural tailoring-in polymeric TEs for strengthening TE power factors of pi-CPs. First, the doping mechanisms are unraveled by a sequential process of charge transfer and free carrier release, followed by the introduction of various doping methods for enhancing the chemical doping. Second, the design principles for polymeric structures including the pi-backbone and side-chain engineering are presented. Third, supplementary strategies such as polymer chain alignment and construction of polymer blends are identified. Finally, the existing prime obstacles to future development are discussed and an outlook on feasible solutions to resolving them is provided.

Abstract:Conducting polymers have drawn considerable attention in the field of wearable and implantable thermoelectric devices due to their unique advantages, including availability, flexibility, lightweight, and non-toxicity. To date, researchers have made dramatic breakthroughs in achieving high-performance thermoelectrics; however, the figure of merit ZT of conducting polymers is still far below that of the high-performance thermoelectric Bi2Te3-based alloys at room temperature. This challenge lies in the complex interrelation between electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity. In this review, we overview the state-of-the-art on conducting polymers and their thermoelectric devices, starting with the summary of the fundamentals as well as several well-accepted theoretical models. Furthermore, this review examines the key factors determining the charge transport mechanisms in this family of materials and previously reported optimization strategies are discussed and classified. Finally, this review further introduces several favourable device fabrication techniques including illustrating and demonstrating the performance of several typical thermoelectric prototypes, which highlights the bright future of polymer-based flexible thermoelectric devices in wearable and implantable electronics.

Abstract:Future developments of the thermoelectric technologies based on conducting polymer require to find n-type polymers with performance, especially electrical conductivity, comparable to the one of the state-of-the-art p-type conducting polymers. In this regard, naphthalenediimide based donor–acceptor copolymers have appeared as promising candidates. The backbone of the polymer can be engineered to control the electronic structure and the morphology of the chains in order to maximize both the charge carrier density and mobility. However, at the moment a complete theoretical insight from electronic structures to charge transport is missing. Here, we use a multiscale theoretical framework to study naphthalenediimide based donor–acceptor copolymers where the donor π-conjugated dithienylvinylene moieties are replaced by π non-conjugated dithienylethane in various amounts, and we show that this approach is in position to rationalize many experimental data. The resulting gradual change in electronic structure of polymer chains is investigated by the density functional theory and correlated with experimental absorption spectra. The morphology of a polymer film is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations, showing that an extended network of inter-chain π–π stacking is preserved upon introduction of non-conjugated units in the polymer backbone. This finding is supported by a subsequent calculation of the charge transport, which shows only a moderate impact of the morphology on the mobility, while the experimental data can be retrieved by considering the effect of the π non-conjugated moiety on the electronic structure. Such a multiscale description of conducting polymers paves the way toward fully theoretical design of future high performances materials.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are increasingly used as organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors in electrochemical devices for neuromorphic computing, bioelectronics and energy harvesting. The design of efficient applications relies on high electrochemical doping levels, high electronic conductivity, fast doping/dedoping kinetics and high ionic uptake. In this work, we establish structure-property relations and demonstrate how these parameters can be modulated by the co-existence of order and disorder. We use in-situ time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry, resonant Raman and terahertz conductivity measurements to investigate the electrochemical doping in the different morphological domains of poly(3-hexylthiophene). Our main finding is that bipolarons are found preferentially in disordered polymer regions, where they are formed faster and are thermodynamically more favoured. On the other hand, polarons show a preference for ordered domains, leading to drastically different bipolaron/polaron ratios and doping/dedoping dynamics in the distinct regions. We evidence a significant enhancement of the electronic conductivity when bipolarons start being formed in the disordered regions, while the presence of bipolarons in the ordered regions is detrimental for transport. Our study provides significant advances in the understanding of the impact of morphology on the electrochemical doping of conjugated polymers and the induced increase in conductivity.

One-Dimensional Nanostructure Engineering of Conducting Polymers for Thermoelectric Applications

Abstract:The past few decades have witnessed considerable progress of conducting polymer-based organic thermoelectric materials due to their significant advantages over the traditional inorganic materials. The nanostructure engineering and performance investigation of these conducting polymers for thermoelectric applications have received considerable interest but have not been well documented. This review gives an outline of the synthesis of various one-dimensional (1D) structured conducting polymers as well as the strategies for hybridization with other nanomaterials or polymers. The thermoelectric performance enhancement of these materials in association with the unique morphologies and structures are discussed. Finally, perspectives and suggestions for the future research based on these interesting nanostructuring methodologies for improvement of thermoelectric materials are also presented.

Abstract:In spite of the fact that conducting polymers, during the past decade, have made inroads into various flexible devices including electronics, supercapacitors, sensors, transistors and memories etc. their exploration in the field of thermoelectric power-generation has not yet been significant. This review provides a comprehensive study regarding thermoelectric performance of various conducting polymers depending upon their specific structural and physico-chemical properties. Recent trends in organic thermoelectrics are discussed as: (i) factors affecting thermoelectric performance; (ii) strategies required for improvement of the power factor (due to inherent low thermal conductivity); and (iii) challenges that still lie ahead. A detailed analysis of electrical and thermal transport-mechanisms suggests that various processes such as stretching, controlled doping and addition of inorganic materials/carbon nanostructures, may be applied for enhancement of the thermoelectric figure-of-merit. The attempts are made for highlighting as to how these conducting polymers can be realized into efficient thermoelectric generators by summarizing various reported architectural-designs. These devices have a tremendous potential for tapping low-temperature heat (e.g. body/appliances’ heat, geo-thermal/oceanic heat etc.) to power wearable medical sensors and smart electronic devices. Finally, the efforts are put together to familiarize the reader with the big breakthrough that can be created by light-weight, flexible, non-toxic conducting polymers in thermoelectric domain.

Abstract:We investigate the charge transport physics of a previously unidentified class of electron-deficient conjugated polymers that do not contain any single bonds linking monomer units along the backbone but only double-bond linkages. Such polymers would be expected to behave as rigid rods, but little is known about their actual chain conformations and electronic structure. Here, we present a detailed study of the structural and charge transport properties of a family of four such polymers. By adopting a copolymer design, we achieve high electron mobilities up to 0.5 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Field-induced electron spin resonance measurements of charge dynamics provide evidence for relatively slow hopping over, however, long distances. Our work provides important insights into the factors that limit charge transport in this unique class of polymers and allows us to identify molecular design strategies for achieving even higher levels of performance.

Abstract:Advanced conductors (such as conducting and semiconducting polymers) are vital building blocks for modern technologies and biocompatible devices as faster computing and smaller device sizes are demanded. Conjugated conducting and semiconducting polymers (including poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), polyaniline (PANI), polythiophene (PTh), and polypyrrole (PPy)) provide the mechanical flexibility required for the next generation of energy and electronic devices. Electrical conductivity, ionic conductivity, and optoelectronic characteristics of advanced conductors are governed by their texture and constituent nanostructures. Thus, precise textural and nanostructural engineering of advanced conjugated conducting and semiconducting polymers provide an outstanding pathway to facilitate their adoption in various technological applications, including but not limited to energy storage and harvesting devices, flexible optoelectronics, bio-functional materials, and wearable electronics. This review article focuses on the basic interconnection among the nanostructure and the characteristics of conjugated conducting and semiconducting polymers. In addition, the application of conjugated conducting and semiconducting polymers in flexible energy devices and the resulting state-of-the-art device performance will be covered.

Abstract:Nearly 25 years after the discovery that an organic conjugated polymer can be “doped” (that is, in chemical terminology, oxidized or reduced) to metallic-like electrical conductivity, the field of π-conjugated oligomers and polymers has enjoyed a tremendous development, most remarkably underlined by the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Alan Heeger, Alan MacDiarmid, and Hideki Shirakawa. Since, in this specific class of polymers, small variations in chemical structure play an essential role and the properties of interest directly depend on the electronic structure, quantum–chemical approaches, that take the chemical nature fully into account, have provided a most valuable input to the field. The results have helped to forge a fundamental understanding of the electronic and optical properties of π-conjugated materials and in guiding the experimental efforts toward novel compounds with enhanced characteristics. It is our main purpose in this contribution to illustrate the impact of quantum–chemical methods, more specifically in relation to transport processes. We do not dwell at all on the theoretical methodologies that have been designed, but rather on the concepts. We first recall the basic electronic-structure aspects of π-conjugated systems, that make their chemistry and physics so rich and fascinating. We then discuss the key role of interchain interactions and their impact on transport.
Exploring the Charge Transport in Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Conjugated polymers came to an unprecedented epoch that the charge transport is limited only by small disorder within aggregated domains. Accurate evaluation of transport performance is thus vital to optimizing further molecule design. Yet, the routine method by means of the conventional field-effect transistors may not satisfy such a requirement. Here, it is shown that the extrinsic effects of Schottky barrier, access transport through semiconductor bulk, and concurrent ambipolar conduction seriously influence transport analysis. The planar transistors incorporating ohmic contacts free of access and ambipolar conduction afford an ideal access to charge transport. It is found, however, that only the planar transistors operating in low-field regime are reliable to explore the inherent transport properties due to the energetic disorder lowering by the lateral field induced by high drain voltage. This work opens up a robust approach to comprehend the delicate charge transport in conjugated polymers so as to develop high-performance semiconducting polymers for promising plastic electronics.
Polaron Delocalization Dependence of the Conductivity and the Seebeck Coefficient in Doped Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are promising materials for thermoelectrics as they offer good performances at near ambient temperatures. The current focus on polymer thermoelectric research mainly targets a higher power factor (PF; a product of the conductivity and square of the Seebeck coefficient) through improving the charge mobility. This is usually accomplished via structural modification in conjugated polymers using different processing techniques and doping. As a result, the structure-charge transport relationship in conjugated polymers is generally well-established. In contrast, the relationship between the structure and the Seebeck coefficient is poorly understood due to its complex nature. A theoretical framework by David Emin (Phys. Rev. B, 1999, 59, 6205-6210) suggests that the Seebeck coefficient can be enhanced via carrier-induced vibrational softening, whose magnitude is governed by the size of the polaron. In this work, we seek to unravel this relationship in conjugated polymers using a series of highly identical pro-quinoid polymers. These polymers are ideal to test Emin's framework experimentally as the quinoid character and polaron delocalization in these polymers can be well controlled even by small atomic differences (<10 at. % per repeating unit). By increasing the polaron delocalization, that is, the polaron size, we demonstrate that both the conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient (and hence PF) can be increased simultaneously, and the latter is due to the increase in the polaron's vibrational entropy. By using literature data, we also show that this phenomenon can be observed in two closely related diketopyrrolopyrrole-conjugated polymers as well as in p-doped P3HT and PANI systems with an increasing molecular order.
