Abstract:Abstract Background Dietary lysine and apparent nitrogen-corrected metabolizable energy (AMEn) are two key variables affecting the production of breeder hens. In this study, the effects and interactions of lysine and AMEn on yellow-feathered broiler breeder hens were investigated. A total of 720 30-week-old breeder hens were fed in a 5 (lysine: 0.56%, 0.68%, 0.80%, 0.92%, and 1.04%) × 2 (AMEn: 11.50 and 11.10 MJ/kg) factorial arrangement for 12 weeks. The productive performance, reproductive traits, biochemical variables of breeder hens, the amino acid concentration and quality of eggs, and the growth performance of offspring broilers were determined. Result (1) Dietary lysine had quadratic effects (P < 0.05) on laying rate, average daily egg mass and feed intake/egg mass of breeder hens; birds with 11.50 MJ/kg AMEn (high AMEn) had higher (P < 0.05) BW than those with 11.10 MJ/kg AMEn (low AMEn); (2) dietary lysine significantly affected on the relative ovarian weight (quadratic and linear), and numbers of large yellow follicles (LYF, quadratic); birds with high AMEn had longer fallopian tube and more LYF than those with low AMEn (P < 0.05); (3) dietary lysine had significant effects (linear and quadratic) on eggshell thickness and shell strength of eggs from breeder hens; birds with high AMEn had thinner eggshells and deeper yolk color than those with low AMEn (P < 0.05); (4) there were higher (P < 0.05) contents of protein and concentrations of all measured animo acids (AAs) in eggs from birds fed low AMEn; (5) supplementation with high AMEn to breeder hens significantly increased the hatchability of fertilized eggs; (6) neither dietary lysine level or AMEn affected growth performance of offspring broilers; (7) both dietary lysine level and AMEn significantly affected gonadotropin concentrations and biochemical variables of breeder hens. Conclusions Dietary lysine had significant influences on productive performance, reproductive traits, and egg quality of yellow-feathered breeder hens. Based on productive performance, the optimal levels of dietary lysine were 0.81% to 0.83%, while 0.71% to 72% lysine was enough to obtain the best quality of breeding eggs. High AMEn was more beneficial to breeder hens for reproductive traits and hatchability of the fertilized eggs, while it showed detrimental effects on eggshell thickness and AA concentrations of breeding eggs.
Effects of reduced crude protein levels, dietary electrolyte balance, and energy density on the performance of broiler chickens offered maize-based diets with evaluations of starch, protein, and amino acid metabolism

Abstract:The crude protein (CP) content of 4 iso-energetic, maize-based diets containing 11.00 g/kg digestible lysine was reduced in gradations from 200 to 156 g/kg with increasing inclusions of synthetic, or unbound, essential amino acids. A constant dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) of 230 mEq/kg was maintained, but a second 156 g/kg CP diet had a DEB of 120 mEq/kg, and energy densities of the 156 g/kg CP diet were reduced in the sixth and seventh treatments. Each of the 7 dietary treatments were offered to 7 replicate cages (6 birds/cage) or a total of 294 Ross 308 off-sex male broilers from 14 to 35 D posthatch. Reductions in CP from 200 to 156 g/kg did not influence weight gain but quadratically increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) and linearly increased relative abdominal fat-pad weights and feed intakes. The reduction in DEB did not influence growth performance but did adversely influence some amino acid digestibilities. Reducing energy density by 100 kcal/kg did not influence growth performance of birds offered the 156 g/kg CP diet but numerically reduced fat-pad weights. The transition from 200 to 156 g/kg CP diets generally enhanced jejunal and ileal amino acid digestibility coefficients but had diverse effects on free amino acid concentrations in systemic plasma with a remarkable 116% increase in threonine. Starch:protein disappearance rate ratios linearly increased in the jejunum and the ileum following the same transition, and these expanding ratios were related to heavier fat-pads and compromised FCR. This study indicates that reductions in dietary CP from 200 to 172 g/kg supported by inclusions of unbound essential amino acids do not compromise growth performance, but a further reduction to 156 g/kg CP significantly increased FCR. Both heavier relative fat-pad weights and inferior FCR were related to expanding starch:protein disappearance rate ratios, which suggests condensed dietary starch:protein ratios may advantage birds offered reduced CP diets.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of time access to post-hatch feeding on the growth performance, hormone secretion, intestinal morphology, and intestinal microbiota structure of broilers. A total of 900 broilers were randomly allocated to 3 treatment groups, with 6 replicates of 50 broilers each. The 3 treat-ments were: immediate feeding (Group 2 h), delayed access to feed for 24 h (Group 24 h), and delayed access to feed for 48 h (Group 48 h). The experiment lasted for 50 d. Results revealed that Group 2 h had a higher aver-age daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) as well as a lower feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) than Group 48 h during the starter period (P < 0.05). Compared with Group 48 h, broilers in Group 2 h exhib-ited significantly elevated villus height (VH) and villus height to crypt depth ratio (VH: CD) in the duodenum, increased Occludin, and Claudin-1 mRNA expression in the jejunum but decreased crypt depth (CD) in the duo-denum at 50 d (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, broilers in Groups 2 h and 24 h had increased glycogen (Gn) and protein (Pro) levels in breast muscle and TG levels in the liver, as well as a higher concentration of serum T3, T4, and IGF-1 compared with Group 48 h at 21 d (P < 0.05). Besides, intestinal microbiota consisted primarily of Fir-micutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria at the phy-lum level at 21 d and 50 d; at the genus level, broilers in Group 2 h displayed significantly reduced abundance of Escherichia at 21 d and Bacteroides at 50 d compared with Group 48 h (P < 0.05). Collectively, these findings signal that early post-hatch feeding measures, especially at 21 d, improve hormone secretion, intestinal morphol-ogy, and the growth performance of broilers by enhanc-ing intestinal health and modulating the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of digestible lysine (dLys) in different dietary starch sources on liver lipid metabolism and breast muscle protein metabolism in broiler chickens. The experimental design was a 3 × 3 two-factor completely randomized design. A total of 702 one-day-old male Arbor Acres Plus broilers were randomly divided into nine treatments of six replicate cages with thirteen birds each. The treatments consisted of three different starch sources (corn, cassava and waxy corn) with three different dLys levels (1.08%, 1.20% and 1.32%). The trial lasted from 1 to 21 days. Carcass traits, serum metabolites, breast muscle protein and liver lipid metabolism were evaluated. A significant interaction effect (p < 0.05) for dietary starch sources and dLys levels was noted in the percentage of abdominal fat and gene expression related to breast muscle protein metabolism throughout the experimental period. The waxy corn starch diet and a 1.08% dLys level in the diet increased both the percentage of abdominal fat (p < 0.01) and blood total cholesterol (p < 0.05) in the broilers. The waxy corn starch diet significantly upregulated the mRNA expressions of Eif4E, AMPK, FABP1, ACC and CPT1 (p < 0.05). The 1.32% dLys level significantly upregulated the mRNA expressions of mTOR, S6K1, Eif4E, AMPK and PPARα (p < 0.05) and significantly downregulated the mRNA expressions of MuRF and Atrogin-1 (p < 0.05). In summary, the waxy corn starch diet resulted in significantly higher expression levels of fat-synthesis-related genes than lipolysis-related genes, leading to abdominal fat deposition in broilers. Increasing the level of dLys in the diet increased the protein content in muscle by promoting protein synthesis and inhibiting protein degradation and also promoted the expression of lipolysis-related genes, thereby degrading the generation of abdominal fat in broilers. Our findings signify that increasing the dLys level to 1.32% when using the waxy corn starch diet could improve carcass traits.

Abstract:This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different dietary energy and crude protein lev-els on performance, egg quality and serum biochemical indices of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production ( 44 to 56 weeks of age) , and to obtain the optimum energy and protein proportion for them. A total of 768 Xinyang green shell laying hens at the end of 43 weeks of age were randomly allocated to 6 groups, each of which included 4 replicates of 32 hens. A 2×3 factorial design with two levels of metaboliza-ble energy ( ME:10. 87 and 11. 08 MJ/kg) and three levels of crude protein ( CP:15. 00%, 15. 50% and 16.00%) was used in this experiment to prepare 6 different diets. The pre-trial period was one week, and the trial period was 12 weeks. The results showed as follows:1) different dietary ME and CP levels had significant effects on laying rate and the ratio of feed to egg ( F/E) of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production ( P<0.05) . The interaction between ME and CP level was significant on laying rate ( P<0.01) . The laying rate was the highest and the F/E was the lowest in high energy and low protein group with 11.08 MJ/kg ME and 15.00% CP. 2) Dietary 16.00% CP level significantly increased Haugh unit ( P<0.05) and dietary 11.08 MJ/kg ME level significantly increased yolk color ( P<0.05) of eggs of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production. There was no interaction between ME and CP level on egg quality ( P>0.05) . 3) Serum urea nitrogen content was the lowest in high energy and low protein group. Dieta-ry 11.08 MJ/kg ME level significantly decreased serum total cholesterol content of green shell laying hens ( P<0.05). In summary, under the conditions of this experiment, dietary 11.08 MJ/kg ME and 15.00% CP can benefit to increase performance and promote egg quality of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production.
Effects of Feeding Low Protein Diets with Different Energy-to-Protein Ratios on Performance, Carcass Characteristics, and Nitrogen Excretion of Broilers

Abstract:This study shows the effects of feeding low protein (LP) diets with different energy-to-protein ratios were evaluated on the production parameters, carcass composition, meat quality, nitrogen retention, and excreta composition of broilers. A total of 576-day-old Ross 308 broilers were fed a control diet (C) and three LP diets containing 1.5% less crude protein than diet C for 41 days. The LP1 treatment was isocaloric with diet C, while the dietary apparent metabolizable energy corrected by nitrogen (AMEn) levels in the case of the LP2 and LP3 treatments were reduced by 1.5% and 3%, respectively. The LP diets were supplemented with six crystalline essential amino acids (AA) to meet the standardized ileal digestible AA requirements of broilers. The LP1 treatment did not affect the performance parameters of broilers and increased the breast meat yield, the nitrogen retention and decreased drip loss of breast meat and the total-N and uric acid-N nitrogen excretion of birds in comparison with the C group. Although the energy-reduced LP2 and LP3 diets resulted in lower final body weight, they did not affect the carcass composition, breast meat quality, nitrogen retention, and excreta composition of birds compared with the control treatment.

Abstract:This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary amylose/amylopectin (AM/AP) ratio and amylase on growth performance, apparent digestibility of energy and starch, serum biochemical index, and digestive enzymes. The experiment used a 4 × 3 factor design, and 960 one-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) broilers were randomly divided into 12 groups fed diets containing different AM/AP ratio of 0.11, 0.23, 0.35 and 0.47 and combined with 0, 3,000 and 6,000 U/kg amylase. Results showed that 0.23-0.35 AM/AP ratio increased growth performance, while dietary addition of 6,000 U/kg amylase significantly reduced average daily weight gain in broilers. The energy digestibility was significantly reduced along with the increase of dietary AM/AP ratio and in the 6,000 U/Kg amylase-supplemented groups. The digestibility of starch also decreased significantly with the increase of dietary AM/AP ratio, but high dose (6,000 U/Kg) of amylase increased. High AM/AP diet reduced serum insulin concentration, which was increased in amylase-supplemented groups. Furthermore, exogenous amylase increased amylase activity in the jejunal chyme. In conclusion, dietary 0.23-0.35 AM/AP ratio was suggested to maintain a higher growth performance in broilers and high AM/AP ratio diets reduced energy and starch digestibility and serum insulin concentration, which was reversed by dietary amylase.

Abstract:Dietary regimens affect performance, yields, and financial return. Preference for certain dietary regimens depends on whether aiming for either best performance, highest yields, or greatest return, or a combination of two or more of the variables. This was studied in an experiment in which in a factorial arrangement of treatments, Ross male broiler chicks were fed six different starter diets from 0 to 14 days: Diet 1 with 3,250 kcal ME/kg and 1.15% Lys; Diet 2 with 3,000 kcal ME/kg and 1.06% Lys; Diet 3 with 2,750 kcal ME/kg and .97% Lys. The energy:Lys ratios in these diets were the same. Diets 4 to 6 had the same composition as Diets 1 to 3, respectively, but Lys was increased by .15, .14, and .13%, respectively. Three finisher diets with 3,250 kcal ME/kg were fed from 15 to 49 days, with Lys levels of 1.10, 1.20, and 1.30%. In all diets Lys was the first-limiting amino acid. Maximum gain and minimum feed:gain ratios were obtained using a starter diet with either 3,250 kcal ME/kg and 1.15% Lys or 3,000 kcal ME/kg and 1.06% Lys, in combination with the finisher diet with an increased Lys content of 1.30% (P < .05). Deposition of carcass protein up to 7 wk of age was highest in the groups fed 1.20 and 1.30% Lys in the finisher period (P < .05), irrespective of the diets fed in the starter period. Deposition of fat was not different among the dietary treatments. The dietary treatments had effect on yield response. Financial calculations show that the diets resulting in best performance and yields did not result in greatest financial return.

Abstract:A 5 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of different iso-energetic and iso-nitrogenous pre-starter diets varying in nutritive ingredients and moisture content on growth parameters, yolk sac utilization and intestine morphology of broiler chickens. A total number of 600-day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 10 experimental treatments, each replicated 4 times, with 15 birds per replicate for 42 days. Dietary treatments included a control diet supplemented by each of the four combination of casein and dextrose (CD), casein and starch (CS), gluten and dextrose (GD) or gluten and starch (GS) prepared in either dry or semi-moist form by adding 0.3 L water/kg diet (SmControl, SmCD, SmCS, SmGD and SmGS) and fed from day 1 to day 7. Diet composition and moisture content interacted for feed intake (FI), weight gain (WG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) over the first week and entire period of the study. Feeding birds with semi-moist diets caused an increase (P < 0.001) in final WG (days 1–42) in the birds fed control, GD and GS accompanied with an improved in FCR except for the control. Moisturising the diets increased the length of chickens at day 3 (P < 0.05) and day 5 (P < 0.01) and decreased carcass (P < 0.05) fat when assessed independent of diet composition. On day 7, diets and moisture content interacted for the jejunal crypt depth where birds fed SmGD and SmGS showing the lowest figures compared with control group of birds. To conclude, inclusion of GD and GS in semi-moist form in pre-starter diets would result in increased FI, improved gut development and feed efficiency and a carryover effects on productive traits can be observed at later stages of growth.

Abstract:This research compared how different levels of dietary crude protein (CP) and apparent metabolizable energy (AME) affect the growth performance, nitrogen utilization, serum parameters, protein synthesis, and amino acid (AA) metabolism in broilers aged 1 to 10 days. In a 4 × 3 factorial experimental design, the broilers were fed four levels of dietary CP (20%, 21%, 22%, and 23%) and three levels of dietary AME (2800 kcal/kg, 2900 kcal/kg, and 3000 kcal/kg). A total of 936 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly allocated to 12 treatments with 6 replications each. Growth performance, nitrogen utilization, serum parameter, gene expression of protein synthesis, and AA metabolism were evaluated at 10 d. The results revealed no interaction between dietary CP and AME levels on growth performance (p > 0.05). However, 22% and 23% CP enhanced body weight gain (BWG), the feed conversion ratio (FCR), total CP intake, and body protein deposition but had a detrimental effect on the protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to 20% or 21% CP (p < 0.05). Broilers fed diets with 2800 kcal/kg AME showed increased feed intake (FI) and inferior PER (p < 0.05). Broilers fed diets with 3000 kcal/kg AME showed decreased muscle mRNA expression of mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) and Atrogin-1 compared to those fed diets with 2800 kcal/kg and 2900 kcal/kg AME (p < 0.05). Increasing dietary CP level from 20% to 23% decreased muscle mTOR and increased S6K1 mRNA expression, respectively (p < 0.05). The muscle mRNA expression of Atrogin-1 was highest for broilers fed 23% CP diets (p < 0.05). The mRNA expression of betaine homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT) and Liver alanine aminotransferase of the 22% and 23% CP groups were higher than those of 20% CP (p < 0.05). Significant interactions between dietary CP and AME levels were observed for muscle AMPK and liver lysine-ketoglutarate reductase (LKR) and branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKDH) mRNA expression (p < 0.05). Dietary AME level had no effect on muscle AMPK mRNA expression for broilers fed 21% and 22% CP diets (p > 0.05), whereas increasing dietary AME levels decreased AMPK mRNA expression for broilers fed 23% CP diets (p < 0.05). The mRNA expression of LKR and BCKDH was highest for broilers fed the diet with 2800 kcal/kg AME and 22% CP, while it was lowest for broilers fed the diet with 3000 kcal/kg AME and 20% CP. The findings suggest that inadequate energy density hindered AA utilization for protein synthesis, leading to increased AA catabolism for broilers aged 1 to 10 days, and a dietary CP level of 22% and an AME level of 2900 to 3000 kcal/kg may be recommended based on performance and dietary protein utilization.
Supply organ development of young broilers in response to increased carbohydrates and amino acids in the starter period

Abstract:The growth of broiler chickens is marked by high fluctuations, varying nutrient requirement, early growth is characterized by high allometric growth rates of supply organs, which if underdeveloped, can impede nutrient efficiency and growth of demand organs like muscle and skeleton. This study aimed to investigate the impact of carbohydrate- and amino-acid-rich diets on the development of supply organs in broiler chickens. Four dietary treatments were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with apparent metabolizable energy (AME) at 2 levels (low: 2,750 kcal/kg and high: 3,050 kcal/kg) and standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine at 2 levels (low: 1.0% and high: 1.2%) in the starter diets. Feed intake (FI) and BW gain were measured weekly; dissections were conducted at d 4 and d 11 to determine supply organ weights. Allometric growth of the liver was higher (P < 0.001) in the high AME and low lysine group compared to the other groups. For the pancreas, the highest (P < 0.001) allometric growth rate was in the high lysine groups. The small intestines responded differently; the duodenum had the highest (P < 0.001) allometric growth rate in the high AME groups and the jejunum in the low lysine groups, whereas the ileum showed an effect of diet density. For performance, high AME from carbohydrates, via maize starch, had a negative effect (P < 0.001) on FI and BW gain. High lysine had a positive effect (P < 0.001) on BW gain and FI, and high lysine alleviated part of the detrimental effect of high AME from carbohydrates. This effect was visible from d 0 to d 11, and persisted till the end of the trial on d 35. In conclusion, feeding a diet with a high AME from carbohydrates has negative consequences for the development of the supply organs of broilers.

Abstract:A slaughter experiment was carried out to study the effect of dietary protein quality on maintenance energy requirements and energy costs for protein accretion and fat deposition in fast-growing broiler-type male chickens. Three isonitrogenous (200 g crude protein/kg DM) and isoenergetic (14 kJ metabolizable energy (ME)/g DM) semipurified diets based on soyabean meal unsupplemented (diet S) or supplemented with 20 g L-lysine/kg (diet SL) or 2 g DL-methionine/kg (diet SM), in order to promote a decrease or an increase in growth rate respectively, were selected and given at four feeding levels (ad lib. or restricted to 40, 28 and 18 g DM/d, on average) to 10-d-old fast-growing male broiler-type chicks for 2 weeks. Both the efficiency with which ME was used to support growth (kg) and the maintenance requirements (MEm) significantly decreased inversely to the biological value of the dietary protein (kg = 0.660, 0.600 and 0.572; MEm = 597, 522 and 464 kJ/kg W0.75 per d, for diets SL, S and SM respectively). The partial efficiencies of use of ME for protein accretion (kp) or fat deposition (kf) were also inversely related, the former increasing with the quality of the protein offered. An alternative procedure was used to try to overcome the statistical problems inherent in the partition of ME between fat and protein.
Effects of diets with different energy and bile acids levels on growth performance and lipid metabolism in broilers

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of bile acids (BAs) on the growth performance and lipid metabolism of broilers fed with different energy level diets. 480 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers (45.01 ± 0.26 g) were allotted to a 2 × 2 factorial design with 2 levels of energy (basal or high-energy level) and 2 levels of BAs (with or without BAs supplementation), resulting in 4 groups of 8 replicates; the experiment lasted 42 d. High-energy diets decreased the feed/gain ratio (F/G) from 1 to 21 d (P < 0.05), and increased the liver index and abdominal fat percentage at 42 d (P < 0.05). The serum total triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol at 42 d were increased by high-energy diets (P < 0.05), while the hepatic lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity at 21 and 42 d was decreased (P < 0.05). BAs supplementation increased the body weight at 21 d and decreased the F/G during entire period (P < 0.05), as well as improved the carcass quality reflected by decreased abdominal fat percentage at 42 d and increased breast muscle percentage at 21 and 42 d (P < 0.05). The serum TG at 21 and 42 d were decreased by BAs (P < 0.05), and the hepatic LPL activity at 42 d was increased (P < 0.05). In addition, high-energy diets increased the expression of sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and fatty acid synthase (P < 0.05), while BAs diets decreased these genes expression (P < 0.05). Moreover, BAs supplementation also increased the expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (P < 0.05), which was increased in high-energy groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, BAs supplementation could increase growth performance, elevate carcass quality, and improve lipid metabolism in broilers.

Abstract:The growing demand for high-value animal protein must be met using sustainable means that optimize the utilization of nutrients, especially nitrogen (N) so that excreta do not over-fertilize fields and end up causing soil acidification, waterway eutrophication and greenhouse gas emissions. Malodorous N compounds can cause respiratory diseases and poor growth in livestock. The increasing availability of feed-grade amino acids makes it possible to formulate low-protein diets for broilers and thereby reduce N excretion. However, published studies of the effects of such diets on broiler growth performance have been based on reducing CP contents gradually in a variety of ways that have given inconsistent results. Since the amount of published data is now large, a meta-analysis was performed in order to categorize diet formulation strategies and quantify their impact on N balance, water consumption, litter moisture, plasma uric acid. This showed that lowering the CP content of broiler diets generally means replacing some soybean meal with corn and hence increasing the starch content. However, since soybean meal is also a source of potassium, this reduces electrolyte balance. Lowering the CP content from 19% to 17% is associated with a 29% reduction of N excretion in broilers aged 0-21 d, and a 7% increase in N efficiency (N retention/N intake). Reducing the CP content from 19% to 17% decreases daily water consumption by 20.6 mL/bird, litter moisture by 2.2% and plasma uric acid by 0.56 mg/dL. This meta-analysis improves our understanding of the low-protein strategy and allows us to quantify its impact on N balance, litter quality and uric acid. It shows that managing N excretion is wholly beneficial and reduces litter wetness.

Abstract:1. Two concurrent experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of using the crude protein (CP) value of supplemental amino acids (AA) in formulating reduced-crude protein (RCP) diets. The RCP diets formulated without accounting for CP values of supplemental AA (RCPN) or otherwise (RCPY) or a positive control (PC) diet were fed without (Experiment 1) or with (Experiment 2) phytase.2. Each experiment utilised 105 male broiler chicks. Birds were provided a common starter diet from d 0-7. On d 21, ileal digesta were collected from the distal half of the ileum. For mRNA expression analysis, tissues were collected from the mid-jejunum and the liver. Excreta grab samples were collected for analysis for N content.3. In Experiment 1, there was a stepwise decrease (p < 0.01) in weight gain and excreta N for birds receiving PC, RCPN and RCPY diets. The coefficients of ileal digestibility of His, Leu, Phe and Trp were greater (p < 0.05) in birds that received RCPY rather than the PC diets. The relative mRNA expression of CAT1 was greater (p < 0.05) for birds that received the PC diet.4. In Experiment 2, growth performance and excreta N were not different between the PC and RCPN diets, but weight gain, feed intake and excreta N were greater (p < 0.01) in birds receiving PC or RCPN diets. The coefficients of digestibility were greater (p < 0.01) in RCP than PC diets for Lys, Thr, Cys, Gly and Ser. The mRNA expression for S6kinase and PRKAβ2 was greater (p < 0.05) for birds fed RCPN compared to PC.5. In conclusion, accounting for the N content of supplemental AA during feed formulation for RCP diets will influence the effect of CP reduction on growth performance and ileal amino acid digestibility.
Effect of endo-1,4-beta-xylanase supplementation to low-energy diets on performance, blood constituents, nutrient digestibility, and gene expressions related growth of broiler chickens

Abstract:The presence of soluble and insoluble non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) was reported to reduce nutrient utilisation, and adversely impact the broilers' growth performance; accordingly, NSP-degrading enzymes are essential supplements to cereal-based diets. Therefore, the current trial was conducted to characterise the impacts of supplemental xylanase (Xyl) to diets with low-ME levels on performance, carcass traits, blood parameters, nutrient digestibility and some genes expressions in broiler chickens. A total of 600 1-day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 6 treatments with 10 replications of 10 birds each per group in a completely randomised design. The 6 treatments were as follow: (1) basal diets with balanced ME content served as control (positive control, PC), (2) low-energy diet (negative control 1 [NC1]; ME content reduced by 70 kcal/kg compared with PC), (3) low-energy diet (negative control 2 [NC2]; ME content reduced by 140 kcal/kg compared with PC), (4) NC1 + 100 g/ton xylanase (NC1 + 100Xyl), (5) NC2 + 100 g/ton xylanase (NC2 + 100Xyl), and (6) NC1 + 50 g/ton xylanase (NC1 + 50Xyl). At the end of the experiment (35 days of age), the reduction of energy in the NC diets yielded lower live body weight (BW) and total body weight gain (BWG) (p ˂ 0.001); however, it significantly increased feed intake (p ˂ 0.05), leading to worst feed conversion ratio (FCR) and European production efficiency factor (EPEF) (p ˂ 0.01) than PC. There was non-significant variation in final BW, BWG, FCR, or EPEF between the PC group and the NC groups supplemented with Xyl. Carcass yield, gizzard, liver and, muscle relative weights were not influenced by dietary treatments; while broilers fed diet with low-energy diets with or without Xyl addition had lower abdominal fat (p ˂ 0.01) than PC. Furthermore, broilers fed on low-ME diets supplemented with Xyl showed a reduction in plasma total cholesterol (p ˂ 0.05) and low density lipoprotein (p ˂ 0.01) levels. Greater antibody titre against Newcastle disease (p ˂ 0.05) was recorded in the NC1 + 100Xyl and NC2 + 100Xyl groups. The addition of Xyl to low-energy diets significantly improved (p ˂ 0.05) fibre digestibility compared to the PC group. Moreover, enzyme supplementation increased muscle total lipids content and decreased muscle thiobarbituric acid retroactive substance content. In addition, enzyme supplementation increased gene expression related to growth and gene expression related to fatty acid synthesis. It was concluded that a low-ME diet might diminish broiler performance, whereas Xyl supplementation to low-ME diets beneficially affected growth performance, abdominal fat percentage, nutrient digestibility and immunity for broilers, and gene expressions related to growth and fatty acid synthesis in broiler chickens fed low-energy diets.
Diet composition influences probiotic and postbiotic effects on broiler growth and physiology

Abstract:Dietary ingredient and nutrient composition may affect the efficacy of additives in broilers. Specific feed ingredients can represent dietary challenging conditions for broilers, resulting in impaired performances and health, which might be alleviated by dietary probiotics and postbiotics. We assessed the effects of a Lactobacilli probiotic (Pro) and postbiotic (Post) when added to a standard (SD) and challenge (CD) diet. A completely randomized block study with 2 diets (SD, CD) and 3 additive conditions (Control, Pro and Post) involving 1,368 one-day-old Ross male broilers, equally distributed among 36 pens, from d1 to d42 was conducted. Both diets were formulated to contain identical levels of nutrients, with CD formulated to be richer than SD in nonstarch polysaccharides using rye and barley as ingredients. Readout parameters included growth performance parameters, footpad lesions score, blood minerals and biochemical parameters, and tibia health, strength, and composition. Compared to SD, CD decreased BW (1,936 vs. 2,033 g; p = 0.001), increased FCR (p < 0.01) and impaired tibia health and strength (p < 0.05) at d35, thereby confirming the challenging effect of CD. Pro and Post increased BW in CD (+4.7 and +3.2%, respectively, at d35; P < 0.05) but not in the SD group, without affecting FCR. Independently of the diet, Pro increased plasma calcium, phosphorus and uric acid at d21 (+6.2, +7.4, and +15.5%, respectively) and d35 (+6.6, +6.2 and +21.0%, respectively) (P < 0.05) while Post increased plasma magnesium only at d21 (+11.3%; P = 0.037). Blood bile acids were affected by additives in an age- and diet-dependent manner, with some opposite effects between dietary conditions. Diet composition modulated Pro and Post effects on broiler growth performance. Additionally, Pro and Post affected animal metabolism and leg health diet-dependently for some but not all investigated parameters. Our findings show that the effects of pro- and postbiotics on the growth performance and physiology of broilers can be dependent on diet composition and thus possibly other factors affecting diet characteristics.
Effects of Amino Acid Supplementation to a Low-Protein Diet on the Growth Performance and Protein Metabolism-related Factors in Broiler Chicks

Abstract:A low-protein (LP) diet may alleviate the environmental impact of chicken meat production by reducing nitrogen excretion and ammonia emissions. Thus, this study investigated the effect of a 15% reduced protein diet with or without amino acid (AA) supplementation on the growth performance of broiler chicks from 10 to 35 days of age and the underlying mechanism for loss of skeletal muscle mass. Thirty-six male broiler chicks were allocated to three experimental groups based on body weight: control, LP, and essential AA-supplemented LP (LP+AA). The body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and weight of breast muscles and legs significantly decreased only in the LP group at the end of the feeding period. Plasma uric acid levels were significantly lower in the LP+AA group than those of the other groups. In the LP group, mRNA levels of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 isoform B were significantly higher in the pectoralis major, whereas those of atrogin-1, muscle RING-finger protein-1, and myoblast determination protein 1 were significantly higher in the biceps femoris compared to those in the control group. There were no significant differences in insulin-like growth factor 1 mRNA levels in the liver or skeletal muscle between groups. These findings suggested that supplementation with essential AAs ameliorated the impaired effects of an LP diet on growth performance in broiler chicks, and that the transcriptional changes in proteolytic genes in skeletal muscles might be related to the impaired effects of the LP diet.

Abstract:Introduction: Dietary nutrient content is crucial for energy metabolism and development of gut microbiota. Herein, this study aimed to explore the effects of fat-to-fiber ratios on nutrient transporter, energy metabolism and gut microbiota when ingredients composition was altered. Methods: A total of 240 as-hatched broiler chickens were randomly assigned into three groups including low fat-high dietary fiber (LF-HD), medium fat-medium dietary fiber (MF-MD) and high fat-low dietary fiber (HF-LD), with diets being iso-protein, and broilers were offered the same commercial diets from 21 to 42 d. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA of SPSS. Results and Discussion: Results showed that HF-LD diet significantly increased glucose content and decreased triglyceride in serum of broilers ( p < 0.05). The mRNA abundance of jejunal gene involved in glucose transporter and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle was significantly increased in broilers fed with HF-LD diets. Compared with LF-HD, HF-LD had a lower abundance of Anaerofilum and CHKCI001 , and an increased proportion of beneficial bacteria such as Alistipes , Catenibacillus , Intestinimonas , Lactobacillus , and Peptococcus ( p < 0.05). Functional prediction of these microbial changes indicated that HF-LD diet drove caecal microbiota to participate in carbohydrate metabolism and TCA cycle ( p < 0.05). Dietary HF-LD-induced microbiota changes were positively correlated with growth performance of broilers ( p < 0.05). Therefore, HF-LD diet increased glucose transporters and energy metabolism in intestine and shaped microbial structure and metabolic pathways, which may benefit the growth performance of broilers.
