Abstract:Thermal management of textiles requires local microclimate control over heat and wet dissipation to create a comfortable thermal-wet environment at the interface of the human body and clothing. Herein, we design a fabric capable of both sweat- and cooling-management using a knitted fabric featuring a bilayer structure consisting of hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate and hydrophilic cellulose fibers to simultaneously achieve high infrared (IR) transmittance and good thermal-wet comfort. The IR transmission of this cooling textile increased by ~ twofold in the dry state and ~ eightfold in the wet state compared to conventional cotton fabric. When the porosity changes from 10 to 47% with the comparison of conventional cotton fabric and our cooling textile, the heat flux is increased from 74.4 to 152.3 W/cm2. The cooling effect of the cooling fabric is 105% greater than that of commercial cotton fabric, which displays a better thermal management capacity for personal cooling. This bilayer design controls fast moisture transfer from inside out and provides thermal management, demonstrating high impact not only for garments, but also for other systems requiring heat regulation, such as buildings, which could mitigate energy demand and ultimately contribute to the relief of global energy and climate issues.

Abstract:Thermal comfort of textiles plays an indispensable role in the process of human civilization. Advanced textile for personal thermal management shapes body microclimates by merely regulating heat transfer between the skin and local ambient without wasting excess energy. Therefore, numerous efforts have recently been devoted to the development of advanced thermoregulatory textiles. In this review, we provide a unified perspective on those state-of-the-art efforts by emphasizing the design of diverse heat transfer pathways. We focus on engineering certain physical quantities to tailor the heat transfer pathways, such as thermal emittance/absorptance, reflectance and transmittance in near-infrared and mid-infrared radiation, as well as thermal conductance in conduction. Tuning those heat transfer pathways can achieve different functionalities for personal thermal management, such as passive cooling, warming, or even dual-mode (cooling-warming), either static switching or dynamic adapting. Finally, we point out the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field, including but not limited to the impact of evaporation and convection with missing blocks of heat pathways, the bio-inspired and artificial-intelligence-guided design of advanced functional textiles.

Abstract:Personal wet-thermal management (PWTM) is not only highly desirable for human health and comfort, but also plays a notable role in the emerging smart wearable clothes and electronic devices as the levels of integration and multifunction are determined by it. In “human skin-wearable fibrous fabric-external environment” microclimate system, wearable fibrous fabric, as the “second skin” of human body, is the key to PWTM. In particular, excellent sweat/moisture transport capacity combined with passive radiative cooling, which concentrated on promoting sweat/moisture transport, solar radiation reflection and human body infrared radiation emission with zero-energy consumption, have attracted tremendous attentions. Nonetheless, improving sweat/moisture transport and radiative cooling performances, viz., boosting the synergistic management of wet-thermal to extend its applications remains a challenge. Herein, we report a facile PWTM strategy by fabricating hydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus membrane with oriented fibers decorated by silicon oxide nanoparticles via electrospinning. Taking advantages of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic asymmetric wettability and directional wicking of Janus fibrous membrane, sweat/moisture can be driven from skin to the external environment directionally. What’s more, the oriented fiber structure enhances both the solar reflectance (90.8%) and human body infrared radiation (HBIR) emittance (97.4%), which allows cooling down the temperature obviously. Compared with the traditional cotton fabric, the Janus fibrous membrane has excellent passive radiative cooling performance that a dramatic drop in temperature about 20°C can be achieved in outdoor environment. Such novel strategy provides a new and effective way to enhance the efficiency of PWTM.

Abstract:The human body absorbs and loses heat largely through infrared radiation centering around a wavelength of 10 micrometers. However, neither our skin nor the textiles that make up clothing are capable of dynamically controlling this optical channel for thermal management. By coating triacetate-cellulose bimorph fibers with a thin layer of carbon nanotubes, we effectively modulated the infrared radiation by more than 35% as the relative humidity of the underlying skin changed. Both experiments and modeling suggest that this dynamic infrared gating effect mainly arises from distance-dependent electromagnetic coupling between neighboring coated fibers in the textile yarns. This effect opens a pathway for developing wearable localized thermal management systems that are autonomous and self-powered, as well as expanding our ability to adapt to demanding environments.

Abstract:Maintaining thermal comfort within the human body is crucial for optimal health and overall well-being. By merely broadening the set-point of indoor temperatures, we could significantly slash energy usage in building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. In recent years, there has been a surge in advancements in personal thermal management (PTM), aiming to regulate heat and moisture transfer within our immediate surroundings, clothing, and skin. The advent of PTM is driven by the rapid development in nano/micro-materials and energy science and engineering. An emerging research area in PTM is personal radiative thermal management (PRTM), which demonstrates immense potential with its high radiative heat transfer efficiency and ease of regulation. However, it is less taken into account in traditional textiles, and there currently lies a gap in our knowledge and understanding of PRTM. In this review, we aim to present a thorough analysis of advanced textile materials and technologies for PRTM. Specifically, we will introduce and discuss the underlying radiation heat transfer mechanisms, fabrication methods of textiles, and various indoor/outdoor applications in light of their different regulation functionalities, including radiative cooling, radiative heating, and dual-mode thermoregulation. Furthermore, we will shine a light on the current hurdles, propose potential strategies, and delve into future technology trends for PRTM with an emphasis on functionalities and applications.

Abstract:As the interface of matter and energy exchange between human body and surroundings, fabrics play an indispensable and important role in controlling the micro‐climate surrounding human skin. Smart fibers and textiles, with active and passive cooling/warming, heat dissipation, thermostatic, and self‐responsive functions which could provide adjustable smart personal temperature regulation ability, providing an efficient strategy for efficient personal thermal management. With the emergence and development of smart wearable electronics and healthcare systems, strong demands for energy saving and effective personal thermoregulation have attracted great attentions. In order to prevent thermal runaway and realize human thermal comfort during the long‐term wear of electronics that closely contact to skin, personal thermal management is emerging as an important strategy to regulate and balance the heat exchange between human body and surrounding environments. Smart fibers and textiles with light weight, mechanical flexibility, multiple responsive, as well as, excellent thermoregulation ability for efficient personal thermal management are eagerly desired in the healthcare applications of wearable electronics. This review summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art advancements on emerging smart fibers and textiles for personal thermal management, including personal cooling, warming, and thermostatic according to the specific healthcare application fields and individual requirements. Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Personal thermal management systems play significant roles in improving personal thermal comfort and decreasing energy consumption resulting from traditional thermoregulation methods such as air conditioning. Thermoregulatory textiles passively regulating human body heat transfer routes through their engineered properties are an effective and promising way to offer personal thermophysiological comfort without extra energy consumption. In this paper, we reviewed recent progress on passive thermoregulatory textiles and classified them into four categories: radiative thermoregulatory textiles, conductive thermoregulatory textiles, single phase convective thermoregulatory textiles, and phase transition convective cooling textiles. By comparing and summarizing their thermoregulatory paths and performance, we found that radiative thermoregulatory textiles are the most promising because of their wide temperature regulation paths, superior thermoregulatory performance, and bidirectional temperature regulation. Furthermore, we provided critical considerations on the various characterization and calculation methods for thermoregulatory performance used in these research works, and pointed out future perspectives in such a burgeoning field.

Abstract:This review addresses the burgeoning field of thermoregulating textiles, highlighting their role in enhancing human thermal comfort and reducing building energy consumption. It delves into the development and application of smart textiles, leveraging novel materials and methods to regulate heat transfer between human skin and the environment. The review systematically explores various thermoregulating strategies, including radiative, conductive and responsive mechanisms in both active/passive and bidirectional textile systems. It provides a critical analysis of the strengths and limitations of these smart textiles and identifies crucial challenges in the field. Furthermore, it offers forward-looking insights into future research trajectories in the rapidly evolving domain of advanced thermoregulating clothing. Abstract:Stretchable thermoregulatory fibers contribute to the development of novel advanced textiles to manage the human comfort microenvironment. The integration of solar-thermal and phase-change energy offers optical energy charging/discharging and latent heat storage/release, ameliorating healthy and easeful conditions and expanding the service time of heat regulation. Here, we construct a hierarchical core–sheath light absorption and storage fiber that can actively capture solar energy and store the converted heat energy. Coaxial wet spinning strengthens the encapsulation of phase change microcapsules (MPCM) with favorable energy storage and release capabilities, which can buffer extreme temperature changes on the skin surface microenvironment. The surface temperature of thermoregulatory fibers, respectively, reaches ∼13 and 3.1 °C higher than that of common fibers in the charging and discharging process, profiting from the co-harvest of solar and phase-change energy. It presents excellent mechanical properties, ∼650% elongation. The braided fibers, with the combination of thermo-, photo, and phase-change energy storage/release, supply a great approach for energy-saving personal thermal management (PTM) fabrics.

Abstract:Personal thermal management is attracting growing attention due to the aggravation of climate anomalies and the increasing emphasis on physical health. Passive radiative heating textiles offer a promising solution to improve thermal comfort without energy consumption; however, using woven cloth to achieve passive heating while still exhibiting an aesthetic appearance remains a problem. Here, a colored textile based on woven cloth that features superior passive radiative heating capability without sacrificing aesthetics is demonstrated. By coating infrared transparent inorganic nanoparticles on MXene-decorated cotton, the textile achieves selectively visible reflectance for desired color, high near-infrared absorptivity, and low mid-infrared emissivity for passive heating management, as well as uniformly distributed nanopores for wearability. Thermal tests on simulated skin and real human bodies show considerable temperature increases compared to pure cottons. Owing to its easy manufacturing process and remarkable spectral engineering capability, this textile can be further applied to energy conservation and multi-spectral camouflage.

Abstract:Cooling textiles have attracted significant attention for dramatically improving the energy efficiency and reducing the overall energy consumption when compared with age-old cooling and refrigeration systems owing to absence of moving parts, noise-free operation, environmental friendliness, long lifespan, and ease of control. Advanced cooling textiles, which offer unique merits of light weight, three-dimensional deformability and wearability, can significantly minimize the cooling volume while meeting personalized cooling needs. Here, we have systematically reviewed the state-of-the-art cooling textiles technologies including traditional cooling technologies by improving conduction and convection, sweat evaporation and cutting-edge cooling technologies such as radiation cooling, Peltier effect cooling and electrocaloric effect. We mainly discussed these cooling technologies in the aspects of candidate materials, working principles, configuration design, fabrication and their cooling performances. Current remaining challenges and perspectives of cooling textiles were also discussed. This review work may offer hints to guide the design and fabrication of high-performance wearable cooling technologies.

Abstract:Personal thermal management (PTM) of fabrics is vital for human health; the ever-changing location of the human body poses a big challenge for fabrics to maintain a favorable metabolic temperature. Herein, a dual-mode thermal management fabric is designed to achieve both cooling and heating functions by regulating simultaneously solar and body radiations. The cooling or heating mode can be exchanged by flipping the fabric without an external energy supply. The passive cooling side consists of an electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fabric with a hierarchical porous structure, exhibiting high sunlight reflectance (91.42%) and ~14 °C temperature decrease under direct sunlight irradiation. The co-existence of nanoscale and microscale pores is proven to be essential for improved cooling performances. The other heating side, coated with a MXene layer, shows high photothermal conversion efficiency (37.5%) and outstanding heating capability outdoors. Furthermore, the contrary mid-infrared emissivity of the two sides (high emissivity of the cooling side while low emissivity of the heating side) leads to the dual-mode passive regulation of body thermal energy. Besides, this fabric demonstrates satisfactory wearability and excellent stability. Our work proposes an energy-saving and cost-effective approach for PTM fabrics potentially suitable for various scenarios (e.g., indoors/outdoors, summer/winter, low/high latitude areas).

Abstract:<p>Personal thermal management, including warming, cooling, and adaptive thermoregulation of human body, is critical to the comfort and performance of individuals in daily life. Most people feel comfortable within a narrow range of temperature (i.e., between 20 °C and 27 °C) and relative humidity (between 35% and 60%). However, extremely hot or cold environments, dynamic climate changes, and excessive body heat and sweat produced from intensive human activities can overwhelm the coping mechanisms of physiological thermoregulation, causing serious heat or cold stress and even fatal conditions. Over the past decade, thermally conductive composites have stimulated remarkable attention to the facilitation of personal thermal management by integrating advanced composite materials and structures for enhanced and programmable warming and cooling effects. In this review, we discuss the developments in personal thermal management using thermally conductive composites, with a focus on mechanistic models and engineering strategies for thermal conduction. We explore the diverse implementations for improving the cooling and warming performance from fibers and yarns to fabrics and the latest wearable technologies. Current challenges and research gaps are summarized, in order to provide a road map for future research opportunities.</p>

Abstract:The development of smart textiles with thermal/moisture regulation is crucial for outdoor activities and healthcare applications. However, incorporating dynamic adaptive thermal management into conventional fabrics to provide consistent comfort remains a significant challenge. Inspired by the ingenious stomata of plant leaves, a novel Janus-type cotton fabric is fabricated by covalently linking shape memory polymer (SMP) on the surfaces of cotton fibers via the combination of the “grafting from” strategy and the “mist polymerization” methodology. This unique coating induces yarns to dynamically twist in response to temperature, switching the pore apertures in the fabric and allowing for adaptive adjustment of both heat dissipation capability and moisture permeability. The resulting fabrics provide effective thermal insulation at low temperatures, while demonstrating an enhanced cooling effect at high temperatures. Meanwhile, the asymmetrical distribution of SMP across the fabric enables unidirectional water transport, improving sweat removal and cooling. Additionally, the excellent biocompatibility and fabric flexibility allow for comfortable garment fabrication. This work provides novel insights into the field of self-adaptive thermal regulation, demonstrating promising potential for smart textile applications.
An Ultra-Thin Colored Textile with Simultaneous Solar and Passive Heating Abilities

Abstract:Personal thermal management, especially heating up the space around human body, consumes substantial global resources. While traditional methods (such as room heaters) for personal heating are mostly energy-wasting and eco-unfriendly, ultra-thin textile with localized heating ability has recently gained significant attention. To date, passive radiative heating textiles are designed exclusively for indoor scenario and the coloration remains challenging. Herein, the authors report a colored nanophotonic structure textile (similar to 16 mu m thickness) with localized heating ability for both indoor and outdoor environments: (a) solar heating by selectively absorbing sunlight and converting it into heat (maximum absorbance similar to 50%) and (b) passive heating by suppressing radiative heat loss with a low-emissivity outer surface (infrared emissivity similar to 10%). This textile enables a 3.8 degrees C temperature enhancement of the artificial skin in indoor environment and a 6.3 degrees C temperature enhancement under sunlight compared with 2-mm-thick black sweatshirt, as well as excellent aesthetics, wearability and manufacturability. This colored textile with simultaneous solar and passive heating abilities is effective for energy-saving personal thermal management, and paves an innovative way to the sustainable development.

Abstract:Personal thermal management has been a promising technology for improving human body thermal comfort, which presents great potential in reducing energy consumption. Thermal radiation, a main way of heat transfer, is an effective object for regulating heat transfer between human body and the ambience. The suitable and efficient application of thermal radiation in personal thermal management textiles is beneficial to personal thermal comfort and can bring excellent benefits for the fulfillment of energy conservation. Therefore, radiative modulating textiles are capable of maintaining thermal comfort of the human body and show great advantages in personal thermal management. This review is a comprehensive review about application of design strategies based on thermal radiation for developing radiative cooling/insulation and Janus radiative textiles to realize personal thermal management. In this review, the basic concepts of thermal comfort have been introduced and four ways of heat transfer were given a brief description. Subsequently, with thermal radiation as the main character, principles of infrared radiative modulation have been introduced and design principles for infrared radiative modulating textiles are proposed. According to these design principles, three design strategies for radiative modulating textiles consisting of radiative cooling textiles, radiative insulation textiles and Janus radiative textiles will be demonstrated in the following discussions in detail. At the end, the obstacles and prospect of future development of infrared radiative modulating textiles are put forward.

Abstract:Fabrics are soft against the skin, flexible, easily accessible and able to wick away perspiration, to some extent for local private thermal management. In this review, we classify smart fabrics as passive thermal management fabrics and active thermal management fabrics based on the availability of outside energy consumption in the manipulation of heat generation and dissipation from the human body. The mechanism and research status of various thermal management fabrics are introduced in detail, and the article also analyses the advantages and disadvantages of various smart thermal management fabrics, achieving a better and more comprehensive comprehension of the current state of research on smart thermal management fabrics, which is quite an important reference guide for our future research. In addition, with the progress of science and technology, the social demand for fabrics has shifted from keeping warm to improving health and quality of life. E-textiles have potential value in areas such as remote health monitoring and life signal detection. New e-textiles are designed to mimic the skin, sense biological data and transmit information. At the same time, the ultra-moisturizing properties of the fabric's thermal management allow for applications beyond just the human body to energy. E-textiles hold great promise for energy harvesting and storage. The article also introduces the application of smart fabrics in life forms and energy harvesting. By combining electronic technology with textiles, e-textiles can be manufactured to promote human well-being and quality of life. Although smart textiles are equipped with more intelligent features, wearing comfort must be the first thing to be ensured in the multi-directional application of textiles. Eventually, we discuss the dares and prospects of smart thermal management fabric research.

Abstract:Thermal comfort is essential for human well-being, influencing our perception of surrounding thermal conditions. Achieving thermal comfort typically requires energy for cooling or heating, prompting researchers to advocate for personal technologies due to their lower energy consumption (active on-body systems) compared to traditional methods (off-body systems). Advanced textiles are promoted as a sustainable solution, providing thermal comfort over a wider temperature range without additional energy consumption (passive on-body systems). This comprehensive review examines various types of comfort, with a focus on thermal comfort, exploring influencing factors and standards for assessing advanced textile performance. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of developing infrared (IR) emission control technologies to enhance thermal comfort, as radiant heat significantly contributes to body heat loss. Recent advancements in passive radiative cooling/heating layer fabrication are discussed. Among the technologies utilized for creating layers with radiant heat control properties, electrospinning technology is emphasized in this study. Electrospinning technology, renowned for its simplicity, compatibility with other methods, controllability, repeatability, and burgeoning industrial applications, is of particular interest to researchers. This article explores how passive design of electrospun layers can enhance radiant heat reflection and absorption for heating and cooling purposes. These layers are passive smart textiles that adapt to weather conditions using particles added during fabrication. The article discusses the advantages and challenges of this approach, highlighting the potential of electrospinning technology in creating smart textiles with improved thermal properties. The overarching goal is to aid ongoing research in achieving thermal comfort across diverse environments.
