Abstract:AimsThis study aimed to assess possible interactive effects of coping styles and psychological stress on depression and anxiety symptoms in Chinese patients with Type 2 diabetes.MethodsThree hundred and four patients with Type 2 diabetes underwent a face-to-face interview by trained research staff according to a standardized questionnaire including information on socio-demographic characteristics, psychological stress, coping styles and anxiety and depressive symptoms. The interactive effects of coping styles and psychological stress on depression and anxiety symptoms were assessed by hierarchical multiple regression analyses.ResultsThere were significant associations of the four domains of psychological stress with anxiety and depressive symptoms, except for the relationship between 'reduced economic condition' and depressive symptoms. 'Negative coping style' significantly increased the level of both anxiety and depressive symptoms; whereas, 'active coping style' and 'avoidant coping style' decreased the risk of depressive symptoms. The interactions of 'negative coping style' with 'worrying about decline in body/physical function' and 'reduced economic condition' significantly increased the risk of anxiety and depressive symptoms, and the interaction of 'social/family crisis caused by the disease' with 'avoidance coping style' and 'worrying about decline in body/physical function' with 'active coping style' significantly decreased the risk of depressive symptoms.ConclusionsThe results of this study suggest that certain coping styles might moderate the association of psychological stress with anxiety and depressive symptoms in Chinese patients with Type 2 diabetes.
Correlation between symptoms of depression, attitude, and self-care in elderly with type 2 diabetes

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objectives: to correlate depressive symptoms, attitude, and self-care of elderly people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: study developed with 144 elderly people with diabetes; carried out in Family Health Units. A semi-structured instrument was used to obtain data on the sociodemographic profile; the Geriatric Depression Scale (15 items), the Questionário de Atitudes Psicológicas do Diabetes [Psychological Attitudes of Diabetes Questionnaire], and the Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire (DSCA) were also used. Results: it was identified that 24.3% of the participants presented depressive symptoms, and 93.8% presented negative attitudes of coping. A greater adherence to self-care activities related to the practice of medication was observed. In the correlation between the scales, a negative and inversely proportional correspondence was noted between depressive symptomatology and physical activity (p=0.010) and foot care (p=0.006), likewise between attitude and foot care (p=0.009). Conclusions: self-care in elderly people with diabetes mellitus is influenced by depressive symptoms and negative coping attitudes.
Depressive Symptoms Are Associated with Cognitive Function in the Elderly with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic condition associated with poor clinical and cognitive outcomes including vascular disease, depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment, and dementia. In the general elderly population, depression has been consistently identified as a risk factor for cognitive impairment/decline. However, the association between depression and cognitive function in T2D has been understudied.OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association between depression and cognitive function in a large sample of cognitively normal elderly with T2D.METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we examined 738 participants, aged 65-88 years old, enrolled in the Israel Diabetes and Cognitive Decline study. For each cognitive domain (Episodic Memory, Executive Function, Attention/Working Memory, Language/Semantic Categorization) and Overall Cognition, multiple linear regressions assessed its association with depression (score greater than 5 on the 15-item version of the Geriatric Depression Scale [GDS]), adjusting for age, sex, and education.RESULTS: Depression (n = 66, 8.9%) was associated with worse performance on tasks of Executive Function (p = 0.004), Language/Semantic Categorization (p < 0.001), and Overall Cognition (p < 0.002), but not Episodic Memory (p = 0.643) or Attention/Working Memory (p = 0.488). Secondary analyses using GDS as a continuous variable did not substantially change the results. Adjusting also for a history of antidepressant medication use slightly weakened the findings.CONCLUSION: Significant associations of depression with several cognitive domains and Overall Cognition even in cognitively normal elderly with T2D, suggest that depression may have a role in impaired cognitive function in T2D, which may be attenuated by antidepressants.

Induction of Volatile Terpene Biosynthesis and Diurnal Emission by Methyl Jasmonate in Foliage of Norway Spruce1

Abstract:Terpenoids are characteristic constitutive and inducible defense chemicals of conifers. The biochemical regulation of terpene formation, accumulation, and release from conifer needles was studied in Norway spruce [Picea abies L. (Karst)] saplings using methyl jasmonate (MeJA) to induce defensive responses without inflicting physical damage to terpene storage structures. MeJA treatment caused a 2-fold increase in monoterpene and sesquiterpene accumulation in needles without changes in terpene composition, much less than the 10- and 40-fold increases in monoterpenes and diterpenes, respectively, observed in wood tissue after MeJA treatment (D. Martin, D. Tholl, J. Gershenzon, J. Bohlmann [2002] Plant Physiol 129: 1003–1018). At the same time, MeJA triggered a 5-fold increase in total terpene emission from foliage, with a shift in composition to a blend dominated by oxygenated monoterpenes (e.g. linalool) and sesquiterpenes [e.g. (E)-β-farnesene] that also included methyl salicylate. The rate of linalool emission increased more than 100-fold and that of sesquiterpenes increased more than 30-fold. Emission of these compounds followed a pronounced diurnal rhythm with the maximum amount released during the light period. The major MeJA-induced volatile terpenes appear to be synthesized de novo after treatment, rather than being released from stored terpene pools, because they are almost completely absent from needle oleoresin and are the major products of terpene synthase activity measured after MeJA treatment. Based on precedents in other species, the induced emission of terpenes from Norway spruce foliage may have ecological and physiological significance.
Survey of depressive and anxious status of the middle-aged and elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract:Objective To investigate the depressive and anxious status of the middle-aged and old patients with type 2 diabetes and to analyze the risk factors. Methods 228 middle-aged and old patients with type 2 diabetes were inquired and assessed with self-rating depressing scale(SDS) and self-rating anxiety scale(SAS).Meanwhile,glucose control,hypertension,dyslipidemia and diabetic chronic complication were investigated and correlation was analysed. Results The prevalence of depression(50.0%) and the score of SDS(38.64±10.51),the prevalence of anxiety(21.9%) and score of SAS(35.1±7.65) were higher in diabetic group than those in control group(P<0.05 or P<0.01).The score of SDS in 40-49 years age subgroup was significantly higher than that in 60-69 years and ≥70 years age subgroups(P<0.05).The scores of SAS in 40-49,50-59,and 60-69 years age subgroups were higher than that in ≥70 years age subgroup(P<0.05 or P<0.01).The prevalence of depression in 40-49 years age subgroup was higher than that in other three subgroups(P<0.05 or P<0.01).The prevalence of anxiety was higher than that in ≥70 years age patients(P<0.05).Patients with poor glucose control and chronic complications presented with more severe depressive status,and anxiety was associated with depression strongly based on Pearson correlation analysis. Conclusions Depressive and anxious status are found commonly in the middle-aged and old patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Patients with poor blood glucose control and chronic complications are prone to suffering depression;the two negative emotions are inclined to coexist.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the incidence of depression in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: One hundred newly diagnosed (4 - 12 weeks) T2DM participants were evaluated for depressive symptoms by using the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Blood glucose (HBA1C), urinary albumin, BMI, and blood pressure were measured. Sexual function was evaluated by a self-score on IIEF-5 Questionnaires in male participants below 60 years of age. Results: Twenty-eight (28%) of these had depressive scores, 18 (18%) had mild scores, six (6%) had moderate scores, and four had (4%) severe ones. In those who took oral medication, the percentage of depression was 18.5% (10/54) and in those who were treated by insulin the percentage was 39.1% (18/46). The levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), HBA1c, and urinary albumin were higher in those with depression. The SDS score was negatively correlated with age and annual household income (r = 0.151,0.139, P < 0.05); 17% of the (8/48) males below 60 years of age was diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED) by II EF-5score < 20 and the severity of depressive symptoms was negatively correlated with II EF-5score (r = 0.131, P < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings indicated that depressive symptoms are common in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics. A variety of factors could be influencing the severity of depressive symptoms.
High Prevalence of Depressive Symptoms in Patients With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes in Developing Countries: Results From the International Diabetes Management Practices Study

Abstract:Objective: Depression is common in people with diabetes, but data from developing countries are scarce. We evaluated the prevalence and risk factors for depressive symptoms in patients with diabetes using data from the International Diabetes Management Practices Study (IDMPS). Research design and methods: IDMPS is an ongoing multinational, cross-sectional study investigating quality of care in patients with diabetes in real-world settings. Data from wave 5 (2011), including 21 countries, were analyzed using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to evaluate depressive symptoms. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify risk factors of depressive symptoms. Results: Of 9,865 patients eligible for analysis, 2,280 had type 1 and 7,585 had type 2 diabetes (treatment: oral glucose-lowering drugs [OGLD] only, n = 4,729; OGLDs plus insulin, n = 1,892; insulin only, n = 964). Depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score ≥5) were reported in 30.7% of those with type 1 diabetes. In patients with type 2 diabetes, the respective figures were 29.0% for OGLDs-only, 36.6% for OGLDs-plus-insulin, and 46.7% for insulin-only subgroups. Moderate depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score 10-19) were observed in 8-16% of patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Female sex, complications, and low socioeconomic status were independently associated with depressive symptoms. In type 1 diabetes and in the type 2 diabetes OGLDs-only group, depression was associated with poor glycemic control. Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are common in patients with diabetes from developing countries, calling for routine screening, especially in high-risk groups, to reduce the double burden of diabetes and depression and their negative interaction.

Abstract:Depression is more common in people with type 2 diabetes than in the genera Background and Objective: l population. Metabolic consequences of diabetes can dent nerves and vasculature, impairing brain functioning and subsequently causing depression. Depression and diabetes could affect the treatment and outcomes of both disorders simultaneously. The objective of the study was to assess the sociodemographic prole, the severity of depression, and adherence among type 2 diabetic patients.Poor adherence to treatment at large affects the course and prognosis of the disease This study is a Materials and Methods: hospital-based, cross-sectional study that was done from November 2021 to May 2022 with permission from the ethical; committee. The study was conducted among 95 Type2 diabetic patients who were on treatment in tertiary care centers. All of them fullled the inclusion criteria. Assessment of depression was done by PHQ-9 and CRS scales were used for this study. In our study majority of our participants a Results: mong 95 type 2 diabetic patients the majority belonging to the age group of 41-60 were married, males from urban backgrounds, and unemployed having primary education. The majority had an HBA1C level of>6.5% and a lower adherence rate. Depression is common among diabet Conclusion: ic patients. The analysis revealed that depression among type 2 diabetic patients needs to be evaluated at an early stage with an emphasis on compliance or adherence to treatment protocols. Therefore, a multi-specialty approach and specic interventions address this comorbid depression in this specic group.
Study of cognitive functions and their association with depression in type II diabetes mellitus

Abstract:Introduction: Individuals with diabetes have higher risk of developing depression, cognitive impairment, and dementia compared to those who do not have diabetes. The present study aims to assess the level of cognitive functions and the presence of depression in diabetes patients and healthy controls. The study also explores the level of cognition among the normal control, diabetes without depression, and diabetes with depression. Methods: In the present study, the presence of depression and the level of cognitive functions of 59 cases of diabetes mellitus type-2 were compared with an age- and gender-matched control group of 40 individuals. Clinical and demographic details were recorded on a semi-structured performa. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were applied to both diabetes patients and healthy controls to assess the level of cognitive functions and the presence of depression, respectively. Results: On applying odds ratio (OR), it was observed in the present study that there were 93.50% more chances [OR 1.935 with 95% confidence interval (CI) being 0.481-7.789] of depression among diabetic cases as compared to the control group. Similarly, the chance of MoCA score being less than 26 was twice among the diabetic group as compared to the control group (OR 2.208 with 95% CI being 0.702-6.946). On application of the Chi-square test, the association of depression was significant with HBA1C level, level of education, and presence of complications. Conclusions: Patients with diabetes had almost double the risk of developing depression and poor cognitive functions as compared to the healthy control. High HbA1C level, level of education, and presence of complication in diabetes had a positive statistical association with depression. Thus, it is advisable to investigate patients with diabetes for the presence of depression and cognitive dysfunction by applying simple tools.

Abstract:Background & Objective: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disorder that affects patients physically and mentally. It is a co-existing disorder that can impact disease management adversely and trigger diabetes-related complications. However, it seems that the role of factors associated with depression are underestimated by both patients and physicians. We examined the associations between depression and blood sugar control and the role of associated factors such as demographic features, Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), Fasting Blood Sugar, lifestyle and diabetes-related complications on depression in adults with diabetes mellitus. Materials & Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 219 adults diagnosed with diabetes. Participants completed a questionnaire measuring depressive symptoms and demographic backgrounds. Laboratory values and data from physical examination were also collected. Results: The prevalence of depression was 12.3% in our population. The mean level of HbA1c and FBS was also higher among depressed patients. however, it was not significantly different among patients with and without depression. There was no statistically significant correlation between the Beck Depression Scale mean scores and the mean of FBS, HbA1c and BMI (p<0.01). Conclusion: Our findings reveal that depression rate among diabetes patients is considerable. In fact, mental status should be noticed as well as pathological status in clinical practice.

Background:Diabetes mellitus and depression are serious common diseases, and the number of people with both conditions is rising steadily. Depression in people with diabetes mellitus results in poorer prognosis through different mechanisms. On the other hand, the presence of diabetes in individuals with depression increases functional impairment that is associated with depression.Aims:The study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with depression among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending a diabetes clinic in Cairo, Egypt.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult patients with diabetes type 2 attending a diabetes clinic in the endocrinology department in Ain Shams University Teaching Hospital, Cairo, Egypt. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews by trained psychiatrists and from patients' records.Results:The prevalence of depression among diabetic patients was 21.8% (95% CI [15.6%, 29.1%]). Depression was more common among younger age groups and those with a higher level of education. There was no significant difference between those with lifetime depression compared to those without depression regarding physical health complications.Conclusions:The prevalence of depression among patients with type 2 diabetes is high. Given the impact of co-morbid diabetes and depression, diabetic patients should be routinely screened for the latter condition.

Abstract:Objective To understand the depression status of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and analyze the risk factors.Methods A total of 247 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were inquired(crosssection study) and assessed with Zung self-rating depression scale(SDS)for depression prevalence and depression severity.Meanwhile,effects of gender,age,occupation,education,income,body weight index(BMI),disease duration,treatment,glucose control,blood glucose level,hypertension,dyslipidemia and complications on depression prevalence and score were investigated and compared,and their correlations were analyzed.Results The prevalence of depression(49.8%) and the score of SDS(35.58±10.44) in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were higher than those of the control group(31.04±7.31 and 8.5%,P=0.000 and P=0.000).The scores of SDS(44.20±7.33) and prevalence(86.67%) in the patients aged 40-49 years old were higher than those of other age groups significantly(P0.05).Depressive status in in-service brainwork and physical work patients was more severe than that in retired population(P0.05).The SDS scores and depression rate in anti-diabetic drug group and combination therapy group were higher than those in lifestyle intervention group(P0.05).Age and chronic diabetic complications were independent risk factors of depression based on regression analysis.Patients with poor glucose control,hypertension and chronic complications were more severe in depression status according to Pearson correlation analysis.Conclusion Depression can be easily observed in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.The individuals who are middle-aged,on the job,with poor blood glucose control,hypertension and chronic complications are more prone to be depressive.
The prevalence of comorbid depression in patients with type 2 diabetes: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis on huge number of observational studies

Abstract:AimsDepression is a common co-morbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Untreated depression in these patients adversely affects self-care activities and other diabetes complications. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of depression among patients with T2DM by conducting a meta-analysis of observational studies.MethodsMEDLINE, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases were searched for all observational studies that assessed depression in T2DM. Relevant articles were searched using the combination of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms of "depression", "depressive disorder", and "diabetes mellitus" published between January 2007 and July 2018. Random effects model was used to estimate the weighted prevalence rates and 95% CI using "metaprop program in STATA 11".ResultsIn total, the 248 included studies (with 273 reported prevalence) identified 83,020,812 participants; of them, 23,245,827 (28%; 95% CI 27, 29) suffered from different severity levels of depressive disorders. The prevalence of depression was separately reported in 137,372 males and 134,332 females. Of them, 31,396 males (23%, 95% CI: 20, 26) and 45,673 females (34%, 95% CI: 31, 38) were depressed. Compared with global estimate, depression prevalence was lower in Europe (24%) and Africa (27%), but higher in Australia (29%) and Asia (32%). The prevalence in America was equal to the estimated prevalence in the world (28%). Depression was more common in subjects younger than 65 compared with elderlies (31% vs. 21%).ConclusionOur findings demonstrated that almost one in four adults with T2DM experienced depression. Given the high prevalence of depressive disorders in diabetic patients, screening these patients for co-morbid depression and its relevant risk factors is highly recommended.

Abstract:Objectif Chez le sujet âgé, les complications de diabète et du vieillissement s'aggravent mutuellement. L'objectif de notre travail est d'étudier les particularités de prise en charge du sujet âgé diabétique type 2 en diabétologie. Méthodes Nous avons mené une étude transversale portant sur des diabétiques type 2 âgés de plus de 65 ans, hospitalisés dans le service C de nutrition à l'institut de nutrition de Tunis. L'évaluation gérontologique est faite en utilisant le Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), le Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) et échelle d'autonomie de KATZ (ADL). Résultats Nous avons inclus 100 sujets âgés diabétiques. 61 % étaient hospitalisés pour diabète déséquilibré, 24 % étaient hospitalisés pour équilibration préopératoire du diabète, (19 pour chirurgie ophtalmique et 5 pour chirurgie cardiaque) et 15 % pour diabète instable. L'âge moyen était de 70 ± 4 ans, l'IMC moyen de 31 ± 4,7 Kg/m 2 , la durée moyenne d'évolution du diabète de 20 ± 8,5 ans et l'HbA1c moyenne de 9,4 ± 2,9 %. L'hypertension artérielle est la dyslipidémie étaient présentes dans plus de 70 %. Pour les complications macrovasculaires, 54 % avaient une artériopathie oblitérante des membres inférieurs, 16 % étaient coronariens stentés ou pontés et 11 % avaient un antécédent d'AVC ou AIT. Sur le plan microvasculaire, 87 % avaient une rétinopathie diabétique, 64 % avaient une neuropathie diabétique et 41 % avaient une néphropathie diabétique. 67 % des patients étaient autonomes, 77 % n'avaient pas de troubles cognitifs et 29 % étaient à risque de dénutrition. Conclusion Notre étude montre l'intérêt de l'évaluation gérontologique du sujet âgé diabétique. Laquelle est indispensable dans le cadre d'une prise en charge personnalisée.

Prevalence and predictors of diabetes distress and depression in people with type 1 diabetes

Abstract:Background: People living with diabetes often encounter psychosocial challenges, including diabetes distress and depression. Despite this, little research has focused on the co-occurrence of these conditions. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of depressive symptoms and diabetes distress in people with type 1 diabetes in Kuwait and to identify clinical and demographic factors associated with these conditions. Methods: A total of 832 people with type 1 diabetes (females: 54.1%, mean age: 29 ± 8.5 years), were invited to participate in Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) course. Diabetes distress was measured using the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) scale and depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Depressive symptoms were defined as PHQ-9 scores ≥10. Data on biomedical outcomes, lifestyle factors, and sociodemographic information were collected. Results: The prevalence rates of diabetes distress and depressive symptoms were 27.8% and 38.3%, respectively. Notably, 19.6% of people experienced both conditions. In the regression analysis, PAID scale and PHQ-9 scores were significantly associated, patients with higher score on depressive symptoms scale were more likely to suffer diabetes distress (B= 2.65, p < 0.001). Female sex (odds ratio [OR]= 2.2, 95% CI= 1.5, 3.2), higher hemoglobin A1c levels (OR= 1.6, 95% CI= 1.0, 2.5), obesity (OR= 1.7, 95% CI= 1.1, 2.8), inactivity (OR= 2.4, 95% CI= 1.6, 3.6), microvascular complications (OR= 2.8, 95% CI= 1.5, 5.4), and lipohypertrophy (OR= 1.7, 95% CI= 1.1, 2.5) were associated with greater odds for the co-occurrence of diabetes distress and depressive symptoms (p< 0.05 for all). Conclusion: The majority of people with type 1 diabetes in Kuwait experience both diabetes distress and depressive symptoms. The strong correlation between diabetes distress and depressive symptoms suggests mutual predictability. The co-occurrence of both symptoms is associated with many sociodemographic and clinical factors.

Abstract:Rates of depression are significantly increased in diabetic patients, and even more in the elderly. About 20–30 % of patients with diabetes suffer from clinically relevant depressive disorders, 10 % of which being affected by the major depression disorder. Moreover, people with depression seem to be more prone to develop an associated diabetes mellitus, and depression can worsen glycemic control in diabetes, with higher risk to develop complications and adverse outcomes, whereas improving depressive symptoms is generally associated with a better glycemic control. Thus, the coexistence of depression and diabetes has a negative impact on both lifestyle and quality of life, with a reduction of physical activity and an increase in the request for medical care and prescriptions, possibly increasing the healthcare costs and the susceptibility to further diseases. These negative aspects are particularly evident in the elderly, with further decrease in the mobility, worsening of disability, frailty, geriatric syndromes and increased mortality. Healthcare providers should be aware of the possible coexistence of depression and diabetes and of the related consequences, to better manage the patients affected by these two pathological conditions.

Abstract:Neospora caninum is an obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasite that causes reproductive loss and severe economic losses in dairy and goat industry. In the present study, we aim to investigate the effects of N. caninum tachyzoites on the release of extracellular traps (ETs) in caprine monocytes and furthermore elucidated parts of its molecular mechanisms. N. caninum tachyzoite-induced monocytes-derived ETs formation was detected by scanning electron microscopy. H3 and myeloperoxidase (MPO) within monocyte-ETs structures were examined using laser scanning confocal microscopy analyses. The results showed that N. caninum tachyzoites were not only able to trigger ETs formation in caprine monocytes, but also that monocyte-released ETs were capable of entrapping viable tachyzoites. Histones and MPO were found to be decorating the DNA within the monocytes derived-ETs structures thus proving the classical components of ETs. Furthermore, inhibitors of NADPH oxidase-, MPO-, ERK 1/2-, or p38 MAPK-signaling pathway significantly decreased N. caninum tachyzoite-triggered caprine monocyte-derived ETosis. This is the first report of ETs release extruded from caprine monocytes after N. caninum exposure and thus showing that this early innate immune effector mechanism might be relevant during the acute phase of caprine neosporosis.

Abstract:Introduction La perte d'autonomie est fréquente chez les personnes âgées notamment en particulier ceux ayant une maladie chronique comme le diabète sucré. L'objectif de notre étude était d'évaluer la fréquence de la perte de l'autonomie dans un groupe de diabétiques âgés et d'évaluer son impact sur l'équilibre glycémique. Méthodes Étude transversale incluant une population de 200 patients diabétiques de type 2, âgés de 70 ans. Nous avons dépisté la perte de l'autonomie en utilisant les deux échelles : Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) et Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Pour les deux échelles, plus le score est bas plus le patient était considéré moins autonome. Résultats L'âge moyen des patients était de 74,7 ± 4,2 ans. L'ancienneté moyenne du diabète était de 16,5 ± 9,26 ans. Nous avons constaté que 61,5 % des patients avaient une autonomie conservée dans les activités de la vie quotidienne et 58 % des patients avaient une autonomie conservée dans les activités instrumentales. Les hommes étaient plus autonomes que les femmes selon les deux échelles. Les patients les plus autonomes dans les activités de la vie quotidienne avaient un meilleur équilibre glycémique (56,1 vs 43,9 %, p = 0,021) et les plus autonomes dans les activités instrumentales avaient moins d'hypoglycémie (26,8 vs 73,2 %, p = 0,048) comparés aux patients les moins autonomes. Conclusion La perte de l'autonomie du diabétique âgée doit être dépistée et prise en compte dans la prise en charge de ces patients afin de minimiser son impact sur leur équilibre glycémique et améliorer leur qualité de vie.

DiGeorge syndrome with microdeletion of chromosome 22q11.2: report of one case.

Abstract:DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) is a congenital anomaly involving developmental defects of the third and fourth pharyngeal pouches. Thymic aplasia or hypoplasia, parathyroid aplasia or hypoplasia, cardiac malformations, and dysmorphic facies are characteristics features. We present a case which had thymic aplasia, hypocalcemia, facial dysmorphism (hypertelorism, low set ears, cleft of soft palate, fish-like mouth and micrognathia) and congenital heart disease (ventricular septal defect, perimembranous type). The T-cell immunologic functions as a percentage of T-cell and phytohemagglutinin stimulation test were within normal range matched with age. Molecular study showed microdeletion of chromosome 22q11.2 by genotype analysis, but chromosome study of high-resolution cytogenetic analysis by G-banding technique was normal. To our knowledge, about 90% of DiGeorge syndrome patients show chromosome abnormalities, most involving chromosome 22 (monosomy of 22q11.2). In the past, most cases were proven by high-resolution cytogenetic analysis or fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH). We report a case of DGS in Taiwan with microdeletion of chromosome 22q11.2 detected by genotype analysis.
Association between depression with glycemic control and its complications in type 2 diabetes

Abstract:Aims: This study aims to determine the association between depression with glycemic control (HbA1c) and its complications. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study that included 514 diabetic patients. The patients were randomly selected from among all type 2 diabetes patients referred to health and medical centers in Khorramabad town (Iran). Two questionnaires used for data collection. The first questionnaire included demographic information, diabetes and its complications and the second questionnaire was Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) which was used to assess depression. The stata software version 14 was used for data analysis. Then, for evaluate the association between depression with glycemic contol and its complications, Univariate and multiple logistic regression analysis were employed. Results: The prevalence of depression in diabetic patients under study was 46.3% and for female and male was 49.6 and 36.8%; respectively. The results showed that 48.6% of diabetic patients did not have appropriate glycemic control status (HbA1c > 8). There was no significant association between glycemic control expressed as HbA1c levels and depression (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 0.87-1.57). By contrast, sex (OR: 2.03, CI 95%: 1.03-3.99), residence (OR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.28-2.91) and sexual complications (OR: 5.54, 95% CI: 1.07-27.87) have a significant statistical association with depression. Conclusion: The study highlights the high prevalence of depression in diabetic patients. However, there was no significant association between depression and glycemic control. The implementation of mental health screening for rapid diagnosis and timely treatment of depression seems essential in diabetic patients.
