Abstract:Various treatment modalities have been applied to atrophic scars. Fractional CO2 laser treatment has attracted increasingly more attention because of its quicker recovery time and fewer side effects. However, its limitation of sculpting the edge is an urgent shortcoming. In order to achieve a more effective result with fewer complications, we have integrated ultrapulse CO2 and fractional CO2 lasers to for the treatment of facial atrophic scars. The study included 25 patients (10 males and 15 females) diagnosed with moderate to severe atrophic scars between August 2020 and July 2022. All subjects underwent the same surgical treatment. The effects were assessed at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months using photographic evidence. Objective evaluation of the results was conducted using a quartile grading scale, while the subjects’ satisfaction and any adverse events were also recorded. The patients in the study underwent more than two laser sessions (2–5), resulting in substantial improvement in their appearance. The time interval between each session was 3–6 months. Abstract:Fractional CO2 laser is a good option for treating acne scars. However, the clinical efficacy of this treatment modality requires further evidence. To perform a meta-analysis to assess clinical improvements in acne scars with fractional CO2 laser and non-CO2 laser therapies. Databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library) were searched using the search strategy to identify eligible studies. All statistical analyses were performed using the Review Manager 5.0, and a meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effects of fractional CO2 laser used as a treatment for acne scars. Eight studies were included for further analysis. There was no significant difference between fractional CO2 laser and non-CO2 laser therapies in terms of clinical improvement, observer assessment (P = .19), patient assessment (P = .91), and incidence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (P = .69). The subgroup analyses showed that the duration of follow-up had little effect on the evaluation of treatment effect. The efficacy of fractional CO2 laser therapy in acne scars appeared to be equal to that of non-CO2 laser therapies. More well designed randomized controlled trials and more credible and standard evaluation criteria are needed, and the efficiency of combination therapy requires further analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Hypertrophic scars remain a devastating consequence of severe burn wounds, producing anatomic deformities, as well as functional impairment. Fractional ablative CO2 laser treatment has shown scar - reducing effects. In this study, we compared the outcomes of combining two different CO 2 lasers or fractional ablative CO2 laser alone in treating hypertrophic burn scars. Methods Forty patients with hypertrophic burn scars were included in one of following two groups: fractional ablative CO2 laser combined with continuous wave CO2 laser (group 1) or fractional ablative CO2 laser alone (group 2). Three plastic surgeons rated the hypertrophic scars according to observer-rated Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) before and after treatment (at least 6 months after the last laser) and by patient-completed questionnaires after treatment (at least 6 months after the last laser). Results Forty patients completed the laser treatment. Group 1 showed significant improvement in vascularity, pliability, and height than group 2 (p < 0.05) but not in pigmentation. Time-dependent analysis of total VSS scores suggested that group 1 experienced more improvement during a shorter treatment period than group 2 (p < 0.05). For patient-reported outcomes, group 1 showed significant improvement than group 2 in scar appearance, scar thickness, pain, and pruritus (p < 0.05). Conclusions Observer-reported VSS outcomes showed that combining laser treatment resulted in more improvement of vascularity, pliability, and height indices for hypertrophic burn scars. Patient-completed outcomes showed that combining laser therapy was considered more helpful for improving scar appearance, scar thickness, pain, and pruritus than fractional ablative laser alone. Furthermore, combination treatment appeared to produce more improvement in a shorter period of time. Applicability of Research to Practice The two lasers are widely used in scar treatment in South Korea, so yes this research can be applied to medical practice.

Abstract:Background: The pathogenesis of keloids involves a hyperproliferative state due to molecular abnormalities, cellular driving pathways, such as TGF, VEGF, and the inactivation of proapoptotic genes. We reviewed the literature and compared various treatment combina- tions in the treatment of keloids in a one patient observation. Methods and materials: Treatment modalities consisted of: intralesional 5- uorouracil (5-FU)/triamcinolone (TMC), 5-FU/verapamil, enal- april alone, verapamil alone, and fractional carbon dioxide laser. Size, height, and softness of the keloid, pain, itching, and pain were assessed. Results: 5-FU based treatments proved to be more ef cacious than the other modalities. 5-FU + TMC demonstrated the largest reduc- tion in keloid height and rmness. The greatest degree of scar softening and average size reduction was achieved with 5-FU/ TMC (80% and 70% reduction, respectively), followed by 5-FU/verapamil (50% and 33% reduction, respectively). The same combinations led to the greatest reduction in scar height (70% and 33%, respectively). All treatments led to resolution of pain and itching in the keloid. Conclusion: The favorable effects of the 5-FU + verapamil combination are new and deserve further exploration. <em>J Drugs Dermatol. 2016;15(11):1442-1447.</em>.

Current treatments, including corticosteroid injections and laser therapy, have limitations. Stromal vascular fraction (SVF) therapy and CO2 laser treatment offer promising avenues, with SVF therapy showing regenerative potential and CO2 laser therapy promoting precise tissue removal and wound healing. This study aims to investigate the combined application of SVF therapy and CO2 laser treatment for HTS, aiming to enhance treatment efficacy, tissue remodeling, and aesthetic outcomes, ultimately improving patient satisfaction in HTS management.

Abstract:The tendency to use less-invasive laser-based methods with far more obvious effectiveness has been taken into consideration today for improvement of burning scars. The present study thus aimed to assess the efficacy of two laser-based techniques including pulsed dye laser (PDL) and ablative fractional CO2 laser (AFCL) and its combination on improving different aspects of burning scars regardless of the types of scar as hypertrophic or keloid scars. This randomized single-blinded clinical trial was performed on patients suffering hypertrophic or keloid burning scars. The patients were randomly assigned into three groups scheduling for treatment with PDL alone, AFCL alone, or its combination. All patients were visited before and 40 days after the last treatment session, and their scars were assessed. In all groups, significant improvement was revealed in the Vancouver scar scale (VSS) score, the color of scar, vascular bed in the scar, the and height of scar and its pliability; however, the improvement in each item was more highlighted in the group receiving a combination therapy with PDL and AFCL techniques. In this regard, the highest improvement was found in vascular bed and pliability in the combination therapy group as compared to other groups. Although the superiority of the combined group was not statistically significant, due to the high percentage of improvement in total VSS and most of its indicators, it can be clinically significant. The efficacy of the treatment protocols was different considering subgroups of mature and immature scars (less than 1 year), so that more improvement in pliability of scar, vascularity, and color of scar was found in the group scheduling for PDL + AFCL as compared to those who were treated with PDL alone in immature scar group but not in mature scar group. Combined treatment can be much more effective in improving the appearance and pathological characteristics of scars than each individual treatment. This effectiveness can be seen mainly in immature scars.

New combination of triamcinolone, 5-Fluorouracil, and pulsed-dye laser for treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars

Abstract:Background: Keloids and hypertrophic scars are benign growths of dermal collagen that usually cause major physical, psychological, and cosmetic problems. Methods: In this 12-week single-blinded clinical trial, 69 patients were randomly assigned into three study groups. In Group 1, intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (TAC, 10 mg/mL) was injected at weekly intervals for a total of 8 weeks. In Group 2 [TAC+5-fluorouracil (5-FU)], 0.1 mL of 40 mg/mL TAC was added to 0.9 mL of 5-FU (50 mg/mL). This combination was injected weekly for 8 weeks. In Group 3, in addition to weekly TAC+5-FU injection for 8 weeks, lesions were irradiated by 585-nm flashlamp-pumped pulsed-dye laser (PDL, 5-7.5 J/cm2) at the 1st, 4th, and 8th weeks. Lesions were assessed for erythema, pruritus, pliability, height, length, and width. Results: Sixty patients completed the study. At the 8- and 12-week follow-up visits, all groups showed an acceptable improvement in nearly all measures, but in comparison between groups, these were statistically more significant in the TAC+5-FU and TAC+5-FU+PDL groups (p<.05 for all). At the end of the study, the erythema score was significantly lower, and itch reduction was statistically higher in the TAC+5-FU+PDL group (p<.05 for both). Good to excellent improvements (>50% improvement) were reported by the patients as follows: 20% in Group 1, 55% in Group 2, and 75% in Group 3, all of which were significantly different (p<.05). Good to excellent responses were reported by the blinded observer as follows: 15% in Group 1, 40% in Group 2, and 70% in Group 3. Their differences were statistically significant (p<.05). Atrophy and telangiectasia were seen in 37% of patients in TAC group. Conclusion: Overall efficacy of TAC+5-FU was comparable with TAC+5-FU+PDL, but the TAC+5-FU+PDL combination was more acceptable by the patients and produced better results. Its effect on lightening of the lesion was promising. The TAC+5-FU+PDL combination seems to be the best approach for treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars.
Efficacy and safety of fractional carbon dioxide laser followed by 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy for keloids

Abstract:Background: Keloids are aggressive fibroproliferative disorders that cause aesthetic and functional damage. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has shown promise as a novel treatment for keloids. However, the limited penetration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and unsatisfactory outcomes in dense scars hinder its effectiveness as a monotherapy. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of fractional CO2 laser followed by 5-ALA PDT for keloids. Methods: A total of 12 patients with keloid were included in our study. Each lesion was pretreated by fractional CO2 laser with 26-28 W to create microthermal zones. After topical application of 5-ALA solution, an irradiation of 635 nm red light with 120 J/cm2 was performed. The treatment was repeated at least every 2 weeks. Efficacy and safety were evaluated using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for keloid-related symptoms and documentation of postoperative complications. Statistical analysis was performed to compare VSS and keloid-related symptom VAS scores of the baseline and final treatment sessions. Results: The final treatment resulted in a statistically significant decrease in all parameters of VSS and VAS for pruritus and pain compared to the baseline. Except for postoperative hyperpigmentation, no infections, scar aggravation, or recurrence were observed during at least 6 months of follow-up. Overall, patients expressed a high level of satisfaction with the treatment outcome. Conclusions: Fractional CO2 laser followed by 5-ALA PDT is a promising method for treating keloids. However, its synergetic effects need to be validated through clinical trials involving larger patient cohorts.

Abstract:Background: Atrophic acne scars (AAS) are disfiguring and permanent changes caused by inflammatory acne. Fractional carbon dioxide is a common ablative device used to treat this condition. However, issues such as unclear effectiveness, frequent treatments, and potential side effects exist. In recent years, recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) has also been frequently reported for its application in the treatment of acne scars. Objective: To explore the potential synergistic effect of fractional carbon dioxide laser combined with rhEGF in AAS treatment. Methods: We enrolled 15 patients with AAS. They received fractional carbon dioxide laser treatment and were then randomly assigned to receive either rhEGF or a placebo on one side of the face. The procedure was repeated three times, and the results were evaluated using the échelle d'évaluation clinique des cicatrices d'acné (ECCA) score and analyzed using the CBS camera system, 3D analysis (3DMD). Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) examination was also conducted. Results: Both sides exhibited significant improvement in the appearance of the acne scars after treatment, as confirmed by the ECCA score, 3DMD data, and CBS texture score. On the rhEGF-treated side, the pore number and epidermal pigment area significantly improved as compared to the control side, whereas no significant differences were observed in the other data. Under RCM, a significant increase in epidermal thickness and appearance of reticular collagen fibers in the dermal layer after treatment was observed. Conclusion: Compared to the sole use of laser, the combination of fractional carbon dioxide laser and rhEGF does not significantly enhance scar therapeutic effects. However, it does shorten the recovery period after laser treatment and improves the pore appearance.
Application of fractional carbon dioxide laser monotherapy in keloids: A meta‐analysis

Abstract:Background There is no evidence‐based guidance on the use of fractional CO2 laser in the excision of scars. Aim To explore the effectiveness and safety of fractional CO2 laser in the treatment of keloids. Methods In this meta‐analysis, we searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from inception to April 2023. We only included studies reporting fractional CO2 laser treatment of keloids. We excluded duplicate published studies, incomplete studies, those with incomplete data, animal experiments, literature reviews, and systematic studies. Results The pooled results showed that the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) parameters of height weighted mean difference (WMD) = −1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI): −1.46 to −0.74), pigmentation (WMD = −0.61, 95% CI: −1.00 to −0.21), and pliability (WMD = −0.90, 95% CI: −1.17 to −0.63) were significantly improved after fractional CO2 laser treatment of keloids. However, vascularity did not significantly change. Additionally, the total VSS was significantly improved after treatment (WMD = −4.01, 95% CI: −6.22 to −1.79). The Patient Scars Assessment Scale was significantly improved after treatment (WMD = −15.31, 95% CI: −18.31 to −12.31). Regarding safety, the incidences of hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, pain, telangiectasia, and atrophy were 5%, 0%, 11%, 2% (95% CI: 0%–6%), and 0% (95% CI: 0%–4%), respectively. Conclusions Fractional CO2 laser is effective in the treatment of keloids and can effectively improve the height, pigmentation, and pliability of scars, and patients are satisfied with this treatment. Further studies should explore the role of combination therapy.

Abstract:Doped carbon materials are of high interest as doping can change their properties. Here we wish to contrast the electrochemical behaviour of two carbon allotropes - sp(3) hybridized carbon as diamond and sp(2) hybridized carbon as graphene - doped by boron. We show that even though both materials exhibit similar heterogeneous electron transfer towards ferro/ferricyanide, there are dramatic differences towards the oxidation of biomolecules, such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, dopamine and β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). The boron-doped graphene exhibits much lower oxidation potentials than boron-doped diamond. The stability of the surfaces towards NADH oxidation product fouling has been studied and in the long term, there is no significant difference among the studied materials. The proton/electron coupled reduction of dopamine and nitroaromatic explosive (TNT) takes place on boron-doped graphene, while it is not observable at boron-doped diamond. These findings show that boron-doped sp(2) graphene and sp(3) diamond behave, in many aspects, dramatically differently and this shall have a profound influence upon their applicability as electrochemical materials.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Hypertrophic burn scars present challenges for patients and clinicians. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Ablative Fractional CO2 Lasers (AFCL) have shown promise in scar treatment by targeting vascular structures and promoting collagen production. While IPL-AFCL has been used in managing hypertrophic scarring in various dermatological conditions, limited data exist for burn scar treatment. In addition, scar vascularity can frequently limit the depth of penetration and density of AFCL yielding delayed results. The author's conducted a study assessing the efficacy of simultaneous IPL-AFCL therapy on hypertrophic burn scars using the Modified Vancouver Scar Scale (MVSS). To the author's knowledge, this is the first reported case series of simultaneous laser treatment in the treatment of hypertrophic burn scars. Methods In this retrospective study (April 2021 to July 2023), data from patients (pediatric and adult) receiving at least two IPL-AFCL treatments were analyzed. Demographics, burn details, and complications were collected. Linear regression assessed the impact of time from burn to first treatment on MVSS scores. Unpaired t-tests compared pre/post-MVSS scores for partial-thickness (PT) and full-thickness (FT) burns, and paired t-tests evaluated pre/post-treatment MVSS score differences after IPL-AFCL treatment. Results The study involving 33 patients (11 PT burns, 22 FT burns), the mean pre-MVSS score was 12.09 ± 2.77, and post-MVSS score was 6.24 ± 2.96. IPL-AFCL significantly reduced MVSS scores by a mean of 5.85 ± 0.43 (p < 0.0001) with an average of 3.70 ± 1.69 IPL-AFCL treatments per patient. Significant reductions were also observed in pigmentation (p=0.001), vascularity, pliability, height, pain, and pruritus (p < 0.0001). Linear regression analysis showed that the duration from burn injury to the first laser treatment significantly influenced pre-MVSS scores (p=0.008) but not post-MVSS (p=0.062). No significant differences were found in pre-MVSS (p=0.186) and post-MVSS (p=0.233) scores between PT and FT burns. As for complications, 4/33 patients experienced blistering following treatment which did not result in any long-term consequences. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that IPL-AFCL treatment effectively improved hypertrophic burn scars. MVSS scores did not significantly differ between PT and FT burns, but the time from the initial burn to the first treatment significantly influenced pre-MVSS scores. Applicability of Research to Practice Simultaneous use of different light/laser modalities is safe and effective and may offer advantages with symptomatic, functional and cosmetic benefits.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the clinical effects of fractional carbon dioxide laser combined with minimally invasive scar release in the treatment of post-acne atrophic scars. Methods: A retrospectively observational study was conducted. From January to June 2021, 60 patients with grade 3 and 4 post-acne atrophic scars who met the inclusion criteria were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. According to the adopted treatment methods, 30 patients treated with fractional carbon dioxide laser combined with minimally invasive scar release were included in combined treatment group (19 males and 11 females, aged (26±4) years), and 30 patients treated with fractional carbon dioxide laser alone were included in laser alone group (18 males and 12 females, aged (25±6) years). All the patients received the treatment once every two months, totally 3 times. Before the first treatment and 2 months after the last treatment, the scars were assessed by échelle d'évaluation clinique des cicatrices d'acné (ECCA). In 2 months after the last treatment, the curative effect was evaluated and the total effective rate was calculated according to the ECCA score. The adverse reactions of patients during the treatment were recorded. Data were statistically analyzed with independent sample t test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, and Fisher's exact probability test. Results: Before the first treatment, the ECCA scores of patients in the two groups were similar (P>0.05). In 2 months after the last treatment, the ECCA scores of patients in combined treatment group were significantly lower than those of laser alone group (Z=-2.89, P<0.05). The ECCA scores of patients in combined treatment group and laser alone group in 2 months after the last treatment were both significantly lower than those before the first treatment (with Z values of -4.81 and -4.79, respectively, P<0.05). In 2 months after the last treatment, the treatment in laser alone group cured the scars in 2 patients, and were markedly effective in 13 patients, effective in 7 patients, and ineffective in 8 patients; the treatment in combined treatment group cured the scars in 4 patients, and were markedly effective in 22 patients, effective in 3 patients, and ineffective in one patients. The total effective rate of scar treatment in combined treatment group (96.67%, 29/30) was significantly higher than 73.33% (22/30) in laser alone group (P<0.05). During treatment, in combined treatment group, 3 patients had pain, one patient had redness and swelling, and one patient had pigmentation. In laser alone group, one patient had pain, and 2 patients had pigmentation. No infection occurred in the wounds of all the patients in the two groups. Conclusions: Compared with fractional carbon dioxide laser alone, fractional carbon dioxide laser combined with minimally invasive scar release for post-acne atrophic scars can result in a higher total effective rate, with simple operation and good effect, so it is worthy of clinical application.

Laser-assisted topical steroid application versus steroid injection for treating keloids: A split side study

Abstract:Background: Approaches to improve keloid scars include intralesional corticosteroid injections and fractional lasers exclusively. The combinative use of ablative fractional laser therapy and occluded topical corticosteroid as a drug delivery method enhances therapeutic outcome of two efficient scar therapy modules into one simple synergistic module. Aim: To compare the therapeutic effect of combining two modalities of scar treatment, the first is fractional ablative laser treatment and the other is occluded topical corticosteroid to the standard use of intralesional steroid injection. Methods: Keloids from thirty suffering patients were split faced into two identical parts; one part received an intralesional corticosteroid injection while the other part was treated first with fractional ablative 2940 nm Er: YAG laser followed by occluded topical application of steroid cream. Four treatment sessions were performed with 4-week interval between sessions. Every session was assessed photographically and using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS). Results: The mean keloid VSS before treatment was 6.9 ± 1.9. After treatment, the mean keloid VSS of the injection side became 2.63 ± 2.09, and mean keloid VSS of the laser-treated side became 2.07 ± 2.02. Each of the treated halves showed a statistically significant improvement in their VSS. However, no statistically significant differences were observed for either of the treated halves over the other one. Conclusion: Although intralesional steroids injection is the standard procedure for treatment of keloid scars, the use of ablative fractional laser-assisted delivery of topical steroid can offer a safer and a better aesthetic treatment option.
The Scar Bane, Without the Pain: A New Approach in the Treatment of Elevated Scars: Thermomechanical Delivery of Topical Triamcinolone Acetonide and 5-Fluorouracil

Abstract:Introduction: Keloids are challenging to treat due to their inadequate response to treatment and high recurrence rate. Intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) injection with or without 5-fluorouracil (5FU) is considered the first-line treatment for keloids. Three significant disadvantages of intralesional injections are the pain associated with the procedure, the uneven topography, and epidermal atrophy. Fractionated ablative carbon dioxide (CO2) laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) of the topical solution can help facilitate transdermal drug delivery and shows promise in scar remodeling. This study examined the use of a thermomechanical device (Tixel, Novoxel) to facilitate the transdermal delivery of TAC and 5-FU in the treatment of keloid scars. Methods: Seven patients each received eight topical thermal ablations, with one ablation performed every 2-3 weeks. TAC and 5FU were applied after each ablation. Outcomes were evaluated using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), and pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Results: Mean keloid VSS reduced from 8.6 ± 1.2 to 5 ± 2.7 after the eight treatments. Mean treatment pain VAS score was 2.4 ± 0.7. Patients rated their satisfaction level as moderate-high. No severe adverse reactions were noted. Conclusion: Thermomechanical drug delivery of TAC and 5-FU is safe and effective. This is a promising option for the treatment of keloid scars, particularly in the pediatric population.
Effective keloid management using a combinatorial continuous‐wave and repeat fractionated ablative CO2 laser regimen

Abstract:Abstract Background Keloids are benign proliferative scars that form as a result of dysregulated growth and collagen deposition in response to cutaneous injury. Laser therapies have emerged as promising options for the treatment of keloids, with performance varying by laser type and lesion characteristics. Purpose To assess the combined continuous wave and repetitive fractionated CO 2 laser treatment of keloids. Methods A retrospective chart review of 22 cases of keloid scars treated with combined CO 2 laser modes. A single session of continuous wave followed by five sessions of fractional delivery. Efficacy was assessed using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) and the Vancouver Scar Scale. The Numeric Rating Scale was used to assess patient satisfaction and pain. Results Most patients were female (77.3%) with skin type IV (72.7%), age was 24.3 ± 9.3 years, most keloids were located on the earlobe (56.5%) or arm or hand (17.4%), size ranged from 5 to 10 cm, and time since injury ranged from 3 months to 35 years. No serious adverse events were reported. At 6 months, significant improvements from baseline occurred in all characteristics, scar color (4.8 ± 2.8 to 1.9 ± 1.1), rigidity (5.0 ± 2.8 vs. 5.4 ± 2.8), thickness (5.4 ± 2.8 vs. 2.0 ± 1.1), and irregularity (5.9 ± 2.4 vs. 1.9 ± 0.9). The Vancouver scores followed a similar trend. Patient‐rated overall improvement from 37 ± 17.6 at baseline to 16.1 ± 8.5 at 6 months, and improvement in associated pain and pruritus. Conclusion Combination of two ablative laser delivery modes within a single laser platform provided for effective and safe keloid management and left patients highly satisfied.

Abstract:Injury to the skin can cause abnormal wound healing and continuous inflammation that leads to the formation of hypertrophic scars and keloids. These lesions often cause significant negative impact on a patient's life due to aesthetic, physical, social, and psychological consequences. Numerous treatment modalities exist for these hypertrophic scars and keloids, which include silicone sheeting, pressure garments, intralesional injection/topical application of scar-modulating agents, laser therapy, and surgical excision. Due to increased efficacy, an evolving treatment paradigm encourages the use of multiple treatment modalities instead of one treatment modality. However, no gold standard treatment exists for these lesions, leaving many people with unsatisfactory results. Adding scar-modulating agents such as 5-Fluorouracil, bleomycin, or Botulinum Toxin A to triamcinolone monotherapy has emerged as a potential drug combination for treating hypertrophic scars and keloids. We sought to critically analyze the evidence that exists for the use of more than one scar-modulating agent. This was done by conducting a systematic review to determine the efficacy of these combined drug regimens. We found that many of these combinations show evidence of increased efficacy and fewer/similar adverse events to triamcinolone monotherapy. Triamcinolone and 5-Fluorouracil showed the strongest and most consistent evidence out of all combinations. With this review, we intend to encourage more research into unique drug combinations that may improve outcomes for patients with symptomatic hypertrophic scars or keloids.
