Abstract:We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a gas of strongly interacting Rydberg atoms subject to a time-domain Ramsey interferometry protocol. The many-body dynamics is governed by an Ising-type Hamiltonian with long-range interactions of tunable strength. We analyze and model the contrast degradation and phase accumulation of the Ramsey signal and identify scaling laws for varying interrogation times, ensemble densities, and ensemble dimensionalities.

Abstract:A matter wave interferometer based on a molecular beam of K-2 has been designed for observation of both exits: with molecules in the electronically excited state and in the ground state. In addition to the excited state fluorescence the molecular ground state population is detected with a further laser. Two transitions to different electronic states were employed for this purpose and their usefulness is compared. Under the present experimental conditions both interferometer exits show a superposition of different interference patterns due to the influence of transverse and longitudinal overlaps of the interfering matter waves. The interference patterns have been analyzed to be composed of a contribution caused by a two beam splitter Ramsey interference and Ramsey-Bord, pattern with four beam splitters. This overlap of interference signals influences the suitability of the matter wave interferometer for phase measurements of the interferences.

Abstract:Ramsey interferometers using internal electronic or nuclear states find wide applications in science and engineering. We develop a matter wave Ramsey interferometer for trapped motional quantum states exploiting the s - and d -bands of an optical lattice and study it both experimentally and theoretically, identifying the different de-phasing and de-coherence mechanisms. Implementing a band echo technique, employing repeated π -pulses we suppress the de-phasing evolution and significantly increase the coherence time of the trapped state interferometer by one order of magnitude. Thermal fluctuations are the main mechanism for the remaining decay of the contrast. Our demonstration of an echo-Ramsey interferometer with trapped quantum states in an optical lattice has potential application in the study of quantum many-body lattice dynamics, and motional qubits manipulation.

Abstract:The utilization of Ramsey interferometry via coherent population trapping (CPT), which enables the optical interrogation of microwave transitions without the reliance on microwave cavities, plays a crucial role in the advancement of compact and low-power quantum sensors. Particularly, high-resolution CPT-Ramsey spectroscopy of alkali-metal atoms has found extensive application in constructing miniaturized quantum sensors like atomic magnetometers and atomic clocks. Due to their well-defined environment and extended coherence time, cold atoms offer enhanced sensitivity and precision in CPT-Ramsey interferometry. This review comprehensively examines CPT-Ramsey interferometry with cold atoms, encompassing both conventional and multi-pulse techniques, and explores their potential applications in practical quantum sensors.

Abstract:We use differential Ramsey interferometry of ultracold atoms to characterize the vector light shift (VLS) from a far-off-resonance optical dipole trap at λ=1064 nm. The VLS manifests as a “fictitious” magnetic field, which we perceive as a change in the Larmor frequency of two spinor condensates exposed to different intensities of elliptically polarized light. We use our measurement scheme to diagnose the light-induced magnetic field and suppress it to 2.1(8)×10−4 of its maximum value by making the trapping light linearly polarized with a quarter-wave plate in each beam. Our sensitive measurement of the VLS-induced field demonstrates high-precision, in vacuo interferometric polarimetry of dipole-trapping light and can be adapted to measure vector shifts from other lasers, advancing the application of optically trapped atoms to precision metrology.

Abstract:The sensitivity of electric field sensors based on two-photon electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) involving highly excited Rydberg states in thermal atoms is often limited by the residual Doppler effect and optical power broadening. Here, we propose a method to reduce the EIT spectral linewidth using a Ramsey interrogation approach, allowing multiple interrogations of atomic coherence, using either temporally or spatially separated laser beams. Our theoretical calculations predict that the linewidth of such Raman-Ramsey spectral features can be substantially reduced compare to a standard Doppler-broadened EIT, opening a possibility to improved sensitivity of Rydberg atomic vapor-based sensors. We also discuss some preliminary experimental efforts toward observing Raman-Ramsey resonances for both spatially and temporally separated interrogation approaches and associated technical challenges.

A cold-atom Ramsey clock with a low volume physics package

Abstract:We demonstrate a Ramsey-type microwave clock interrogating the 6.835~GHz ground-state transition in cold \textsuperscript{87}Rb atoms loaded from a grating magneto-optical trap (GMOT) enclosed in an additively manufactured loop-gap resonator microwave cavity. A short-term stability of $1.5 \times10^{-11} $~$\tau^{-1/2}$ is demonstrated, in reasonable agreement with predictions from the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured Ramsey fringes. The cavity-grating package has a volume of $\approx$67~cm\textsuperscript{3}, ensuring an inherently compact system while the use of a GMOT drastically simplifies the optical requirements for laser cooled atoms. This work is another step towards the realisation of highly compact portable cold-atom frequency standards.

Abstract:Ramsey interferometry is a key technique for precision spectroscopy and to probe the coherence of quantum systems. Typically, an interferometer is constructed using two quantum states and involves a time-dependent interaction with two short resonant electromagnetic pulses. Here, we explore a different type of Ramsey interferometer where we perform quantum state manipulations by geometrical means, eliminating the temporal dependence of the interaction. We use a resonant tripod scheme in ultracold strontium atoms where the interferometric operation is restricted to a two-dimensional dark-state subspace in the dressed-state picture. The observed interferometric phase accumulation is due to an effective geometric scalar term in the dark-state subspace, which remarkably does not vanish during the free evolution time when the light-matter interaction is turned off. This study opens the door for more robust interferometers operating on multiple input-output ports.

Realizing a spatially correlated lattice interferometer

Abstract:Atom interferometers provide a powerful tool for measuring physical constants and testifying fundamental physics with unprecedented precision. Conventional atom interferometry focuses on the phase difference between two paths and utilizes matter waves with fixed coherence. Here, we report on realizing a Ramsey-Bordé interferometer of coherent matter waves dressed by a moving optical lattice in the gravity direction, and explore the resulting interference along multiple paths with tunable coherence. We investigate spatial correlations of atoms both within the lattice and between two arms by interferometry, and observe the emerging multiple interference peaks owing to the long-range coherence nature of the Bose-Einstein condensate. Our findings agree well with theoretical simulations, paving the way for high-precision interferometry with ultracold atoms.

Abstract:A majority of ultracold atom experiments utilize resonant absorption imaging techniques to obtain the atomic density. To make well-controlled quantitative measurements, the optical intensity of the probe beam must be precisely calibrated in units of the atomic saturation intensity ${I_{\rm sat}}$. In quantum gas experiments, the atomic sample is enclosed in an ultra-high vacuum system that introduces loss and limits optical access; this precludes a direct determination of the intensity. Here, we use quantum coherence to create a robust technique for measuring the probe beam intensity in units of ${I_{\rm sat}}$ via Ramsey interferometry. Our technique characterizes the ac Stark shift of the atomic levels due to an off-resonant probe beam. Furthermore, this technique gives access to the spatial variation of the probe intensity at the location of the atomic cloud. By directly measuring the probe intensity just before the imaging sensor our method in addition yields a direct calibration of imaging system losses as well as the quantum efficiency of the sensor.

Abstract:Using cold 87Rb atoms trapped in a 1D-optical lattice, atomic interferometers involving coherent superpositions between different Wannier-Stark atomic states are realized. Two di fferent kinds of trapped interferometer schemes are presented: a Ramsey-type interferometer sensitive both to clock frequency and external forces, and a symmetric accordion-type interferometer, sensitive to external forces only. We evaluate the limits in terms of sensitivity and accuracy of those schemes and discuss their application as force sensors. As a first step, we apply these interferometers to the measurement of the Bloch frequency and the demonstration of a compact gravimeter.

Abstract:We realize and model a Rydberg-state atom interferometer for measurement of phase and intensity of radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic waves. A phase reference is supplied to the atoms via a modulated laser beam, enabling atomic measurement of the RF wave's phase without an external RF reference wave. The RF and optical fields give rise to closed interferometric loops within the atoms' internal Hilbert space. In our experiment, we construct interferometric loops in the state space $\{ 6P_{3/2}, 90S_{1/2}, 91S_{1/2}, 90P_{3/2} \}$ of cesium and employ them to measure phase and intensity of a 5 GHz RF wave in a room-temperature vapor cell. Electromagnetically induced transparency on the $6S_{1/2}$ to $6P_{3/2}$ transition serves as an all-optical interferometer probe. The RF phase is measured over a range of $\pi$, and a sensitivity of 2 mrad is achieved. RF phase and amplitude measurements at sub-millimeter optical spatial resolution are demonstrated.

Abstract:We performed the Ramsey experiment of optical separated oscillatory fields based on a cold continuous $^{87}\hbox {Rb}$ atomic beam. The beam had a free evolution time of 3.4 ms over a short interaction-zone separation of 42 mm, producing a central Raman–Ramsey fringe with a linewidth of 146 Hz (full width at half maximum). This Raman–Ramsey interferometer based on an atomic beam offers a promising solution for developing a highly stable, compact atomic clock.

Abstract:In recent years the interest in studying interactions of Rydberg atoms or ensembles thereof with optical and microwave frequency fields has steadily increased, both in the context of basic research and for potential applications in quantum information processing. We present measurements of the dispersive interaction between an ensemble of helium atoms in the 37s Rydberg state and a single resonator mode by extracting the amplitude and phase change of a weak microwave probe tone transmitted through the cavity. The results are in quantitative agreement with predictions made on the basis of the dispersive Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian. We study this system with the goal of realizing a hybrid between superconducting circuits and Rydberg atoms. We measure maximal collective coupling strengths of 1 MHz, corresponding to 3*10^3 Rydberg atoms coupled to the cavity. As expected, the dispersive shift is found to be inversely proportional to the atom-cavity detuning and proportional to the number of Rydberg atoms. This possibility of measuring the number of Rydberg atoms in a nondestructive manner is relevant for quantitatively evaluating scattering cross sections in experiments with Rydberg atoms.

A Cold Atomic Beam Interferometer

Abstract:We demonstrate an atom interferometer that uses a laser-cooled continuous beam of $^{87}$Rb atoms having velocities of 10--20 m/s. With spatially separated Raman beams to coherently manipulate the atomic wave packets, Mach--Zehnder interference fringes are observed at an interference distance of 2L = 19 mm. The apparatus operates within a small enclosed area of 0.07 mm$^2$ at a bandwidth of 190 Hz with a deduced sensitivity of $7.8\times10^{-5}$ rad/s/$\sqrt{Hz}$ for rotations. Using a low-velocity continuous atomic source in an atom interferometer enables high sampling rates and bandwidths without sacrificing sensitivity and compactness, which are important for applications in real dynamic environments.

Abstract:Ramsey interferometers have wide applications in science and engineering. Compared with the traditional interferometer based on internal states, the interferometer with external quantum states has advantages in some applications for quantum simulation and precision measurement. Here, we develop a Ramsey interferometry with Bloch states in S- and D-band of a triangular optical lattice for the first time. The key to realizing this interferometer in two-dimensionally coupled lattice is that we use the shortcut method to construct π/2 pulse. We observe clear Ramsey fringes and analyze the decoherence mechanism of fringes. Further, we design an echo π pulse between S- and D-band, which significantly improves the coherence time. This Ramsey interferometer in the dimensionally coupled lattice has potential applications in the quantum simulations of topological physics, frustrated effects, and motional qubits manipulation.

Abstract:Ramsey spectroscopy in large, dense ensembles of ultra-cold atoms trapped in optical lattices suffers from dipole-dipole interaction induced shifts and collective superradiance limiting its precision and accuracy. We propose a novel geometry implementing fast signal readout with minimal heating for large atom numbers at lower densities via an optical cavity operated in the weak single atom but strong collective coupling regime. The key idea is controlled collective transverse $\pi/2$-excitation of the atoms to prepare a macroscopic collective spin protected from cavity superradiance. This requires that the two halves of the atomic ensemble are coupled to the cavity mode with opposite phase, which is naturally realized for a homogeneously filled volume covering odd and even sites of the cavity mode along the cavity axis. The origin of the superior precision can be traced back to destructive interference among sub-ensembles in the complex nonlinear collective atom field dynamics. In the same configuration we find surprising regular self-pulsing of the cavity output for suitable continuous illumination. Our simulations for large atom numbers employing a cumulant expansion are qualitatively confirmed by a full quantum treatment of smaller ensembles.

Driving alkali Rydberg transitions with a phase-modulated optical lattice

Abstract:We develop and demonstrate a spectroscopic method for Rydberg-Rydberg transitions using a phase-controlled and -modulated, standing-wave laser field focused on a cloud of cold $^{85}$Rb Rydberg atoms. The method is based on the ponderomotive (${\bf{A}}^2$) interaction of the Rydberg electron, which has less-restrictive selection rules than electric-dipole couplings, allowing us to probe both $nS_{1/2}\rightarrow nP_{1/2}$ and $nS_{1/2}\rightarrow (n+1)S_{1/2}$ transitions in first-order. Without any need to increase laser power, third and fourth-order sub-harmonic drives are employed to access Rydberg transitions in the 40 to 70 GHz frequency range using widely-available optical phase modulators in the Ku-band (12 to 18 GHz). Measurements agree well with simulations based on the model we develop. The spectra have prominent Doppler-free, Fourier-limited components. The method paves the way for optical Doppler-free high-precision spectroscopy of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions and for spatially-selective qubit manipulation with $\mu$m-scale resolution in Rydberg-based simulators and quantum computers.
