Abstract:The Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET) recently launched the standardization of the next-generation video coding named Versatile Video Coding (VVC) with the inherited technical framework from its predecessor High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The simplified Enhanced Multiple Transform (EMT) has been adopted as the primary residual coding transform solution, termed Multiple Transform Selection (MTS). In MTS, only the transform set consisting of DST-VII and DCT-VIII remains, excluding the other transform sets and the dependency on intra prediction modes. Significant coding gains are achieved by introducing new DST/DCT transforms, but the full matrix implementation is relatively costly compared to partial butterfly in terms of both software run-time and operation counts. In this work, we exploit the inherent features existing in DST-VII and DCT-VIII. Instead of repeating the element-wise additions and multiplications in full matrix operation, these features can be leveraged to achieve more efficient implementations which only use partial elements to derive the identical results. Existing transform matrices are further tuned to utilize these (anti-)symmetric features. A partial butterfly-type fast algorithm with dual-implementation support is proposed for DST-VII/DCT-VIII transform in VVC. Complexity analysis including operation counts and software run-time are conducted to validate the effectiveness. In addition, we prove the features are perfectly supported by theory. The proposed fast methods achieve noticeable software run-time savings without compromising on coding performance by comparing with the VVC Test Model VTM-3.0. It is shown that under Common Test Condition (CTC) with inter MTS enabled, an average of 9%, 0%, and 3% decoding time savings are achieved for All Intra (AI), Random Access (RA) and Low Delay B (LDB), respectively. Under low QP test condition with inter MTS enabled, the proposed fast met-ods achieve 1%, 2% and 4% decoding time savings on average for AI, RA, and LDB, respectively.

Abstract:Video processing systems such as HEVC requiring low energy consumption needed for the multimedia market has lead to extensive development in fast algorithms for the efficient approximation of 2-D DCT transforms. The DCT is employed in a multitude of compression standards due to its remarkable energy compaction properties. Multiplier-free approximate DCT transforms have been proposed that offer superior compression performance at very low circuit complexity. Such approximations can be realized in digital VLSI hardware using additions and subtractions only, leading to significant reductions in chip area and power consumption compared to conventional DCTs and integer transforms. In this paper, we introduce a novel 8-point DCT approximation that requires only 14 addition operations and no multiplications. The proposed transform possesses low computational complexity and is compared to state-of-the-art DCT approximations in terms of both algorithm complexity and peak signal-to-noise ratio. The proposed DCT approximation is a candidate for reconfigurable video standards such as HEVC. The proposed transform and several other DCT approximations are mapped to systolic-array digital architectures and physically realized as digital prototype circuits using FPGA technology and mapped to 45 nm CMOS technology.

A fast scheme for converting DCT coefficients to H.264/AVC integer transform coefficients

Abstract:Converting MPEG-2 8-tap discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients to H.264/AVC 4-tap integer transform (IT) coefficients is one of the indispensable operations for MPEG-2 to H.264 transform domain transcoding. In this paper, we propose a novel transform kernel matrix based on the factorization of DCT to perform this operation directly in transform domain. Furthermore, additional reduction in computation can be obtained by taking advantage of the fact that most of the 8×8 DCT blocks in real video sequences only have nonzero coefficients in the upper left 4×4 quadrant. Relative to Jun Xin’s method, the proposed method saves 16 operations in the worst case and 440 operations in the best case for each 8×8 DCT block. Experimental results also show that the proposed method efficiently reduces the computational cost up to 42.9% with negligible degradation in video quality. Hence, the proposed method can be efficiently used in the real-time and high capacity MPEG-2 to H.264 transform domain transcoding.
A Fast 8×8 IDCT Algorithm for HEVC

Abstract:As an approximation to the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Integer Cosine Transform (ICT) is widely used in latest video coding standards, such as H.264/AVC, VC-1 and AVS. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the next generation of video compression standard, adopts 4/8/16/32 integer transform. Since the size of matrices themselves and the numerical magnitude of matrix elements are very large, HEVC transform suffers from huge computational complexity. To alleviate this problem, we proposed a fast algorithm for order-8 integer transform for HEVC. This algorithm has 66% less multiplications and 46% less additions than direct method and saves 60% area for hardware implementation. It is illustrated by signal-flow graph, which is easy to be translated to hardware or software implementation.
A Unified 4/8/16/32-Point Integer IDCT Architecture for Multiple Video Coding Standards

Abstract:4 or 8-point IDCT are widely used in traditional video coding standards. However larger size (16/32-point) IDCT has been proposed in the next generation video standard such as HEVC. To fulfill this requirement, this work proposes a fast computational algorithm of large size integer IDCT. A unified VLSI architecture for 4/8/16/32-point integer IDCT is also proposed accordingly. It can support the following video standards: MPEG-2/4, H.264, AVS, VC-1 and HEVC. Multiplier less MCM (Multiple Constant Multiplication) is used for 4/8-point IDCT. The regular multipliers and sharing technique are used for 16/32-point IDCT. The transpose memory uses SRAM instead of the traditional register array in order to further reduce the hardware overhead. It can support real-time decoding of 4K×2K (4096×2048) 30fps video sequence at 191MHz working frequency, with 93K gate count and 18944-bit SRAM. We suggest a normalized criterion called design efficiency to compare with previous works. It shows that this design is 31% more efficient than previous work.
Effective Inter Transform Method Based on QTBT Structure for Future Video Coding.

Abstract:Transform, a crucial module for hybrid video coding framework, has been selecting Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) for several decades. Recently, Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and Enhanced Multiple Transform (EMT) are proposed to improve transform efficiency. However, the perspectives of SVD and EMT are different. SVD enhances transform efficiency by utilizing the similarity of prediction block and inter residual block. EMT adopts some new sinusoidal transform cores to accommodate the larger prediction errors closer to the boundary of prediction unit. In this paper, the proposed method mainly has two key contributions. First, SVD and EMT are combined skillfully. Second, non-square SVD is newly introduced to the original algorithm. By extensive experiments, averages 1.07%, 1.06% and 0.65% BD-rate saving for Y, U and V are achieved compared to JEM5.0.1 with some coding tools off, up to 5.87%, 4.28% and 4.47%.
Enhanced Multiple Transform for Video Coding

Abstract:The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), and in particular the DCT type II, has been widely used for image and video compression. Although DCT efficiently approximates the optimal Karhunen–Loève transform under first-order Markov conditions with low complexity, the energy packing efficiency is still limited since a fixed transform cannot always capture the highly dynamic statistics of natural video content. In this paper, to further improve the transform efficiency, an Enhanced Multiple Transform (EMT) scheme is proposed. In the proposed EMT, a few sinusoidal transforms, other than DCT, have also been utilized for coding both Intra and Inter prediction residuals. The best transform, as selected from a pre-defined transform subset specified by prediction mode, is explicitly signaled in a joint coding block level manner. Moreover, to accelerate encoding process, fast methods have also been proposed by skipping unnecessary transform rate-distortion evaluations using previously encoding statistics. The proposed method has been implemented on top of High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) reference software, and significant coding gain has been verified.
Lossless Image and Intra-frame Compression with Integer-to-Integer DST

Abstract:Video coding standards are primarily designed for efficient lossy compression, but it is also desirable to support efficient lossless compression within video coding standards using small modifications to the lossy coding architecture. A simple approach is to skip transform and quantization, and simply entropy code the prediction residual. However, this approach is inefficient at compression. A more efficient and popular approach is to skip transform and quantization but also process the residual block with DPCM, along the horizontal or vertical direction, prior to entropy coding. This paper explores an alternative approach based on processing the residual block with integer-to-integer (i2i) transforms. I2i transforms can map integer pixels to integer transform coefficients without increasing the dynamic range and can be used for lossless compression. We focus on lossless intra coding and develop novel i2i approximations of the odd type-3 DST (ODST-3). Experimental results with the HEVC reference software show that the developed i2i approximations of the ODST-3 improve lossless intra-frame compression efficiency with respect to HEVC version 2, which uses the popular DPCM method, by an average 2.7% without a significant effect on computational complexity.

Abstract:The H.266/versatile video coding (VVC) standard is the most recent ITU/ISO video coding standard finalized in July 2020. VVC includes several new coding tools at different levels of the coding scheme. These coding tools enable a significant bitrate saving of up to 50% for the same subjective video quality than its predecessor H.265/high efficiency video coding (HEVC). Among these tools, we can cite the multiple transform selection (MTS) which selects at the encoder horizontal and vertical transforms among three trigonometrical transforms, including discrete cosine transform (DCT) type II, discrete sine transform (DST) type VII and DCT type VIII. Unlike the DCT-II, the DST-VII does not have efficient fast algorithmic implementation. Moreover, the MTS increases the memory usage required to store the coefficients of the three transforms. Consequently, this paper targets an efficient approximation of the DST-VII kernel based on the DCT-II and adjustment stage. The approximation of the DST-VII is modeled as an integer optimization problem jointly minimizing the error and the orthogonality of the approximate DST-VII under sparsity constraint of the adjustment stage. The sparse nonlinear optimizer (SNOPT) solver with an additional relaxation constraint is used to solve the problem and find the best sparse adjustment band matrices for different transform sizes. The DCT-VIII is then computed from the approximate DST-VII with pre/post processing operations involving only sign changes and input/output reordering. The proposed approximation provides a significant reduction in both arithmetic operations and memory usage. Moreover, it preserves the coding gain brought by the MTS under the VVC reference software. These advantages make our solution suitable for energy-efficient hardware H.266//VVC encoders and decoders deployed on consumer electronic devices.

A Minimal Adder-oriented 1D DST-VII/DCT-VIII Hardware Implementation for VVC Standard

Abstract:Intelligent sensing is an important application field of video coding. For the next generation video coding standard Versatile Video Coding (VVC), several new contributions have been proposed to improve the coding efficiency, especially in the transformation operations. This paper proposes a unified transform architecture for VVC standard that enables 1D Discrete Sine Transform-VII (DST-VII) and Discrete Cosine Transform-VIII (DCT-VIII) of all sizes. In order to minimize the number of adders, the N-Dimensional Reduced Adder Graph (RAG-n) algorithm is adopted to design the logical computation of the VVC transforms. In addition, a pipeline operation is employed to achieve a high throughput rate of 32 samples per cycle. The experimental and synthesis results show that our proposal can save 16.96% area and 9.89% power consumption than the direct implementation by the multipliers. Moreover, this design can reduce the normalized area (NA) by at least 57.53% compared with other advanced works.
Fast Mode Decision for Multiview Video Coding Based on Just Noticeable Distortion Profile

Abstract:Multiview video coding (MVC) achieves an excellent coding gain using exhaustive variable size mode decision in intra-view prediction and inter-view prediction. However, the high computational complexity prevents it from real-time application. In this paper, a fast intra-view mode decision and inter-view prediction termination algorithm based on just noticeable distortion (JND) is proposed to speed up the search process of motion estimation (ME) and disparity estimation (DE). The basic idea of the method is to exploit JND threshold in mode prediction to make an early decision on the process of variable size ME and DE in MVC. We not only narrow down prediction mode size candidates, but also terminate the process of DE early. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce the entire encoding time by 79.94 % on average among different views, with negligible loss of coding efficiency.

Abstract:The usage of linear transformations has great relevance for data decorrelation applications, like image and video compression. In that sense, the discrete Tchebichef transform (DTT) possesses useful coding and decorrelation properties. The DTT transform kernel does not depend on the input data and fast algorithms can be developed to real time applications. However, the DTT fast algorithm presented in literature possess high computational complexity. In this work, we introduce a new low-complexity approximation for the DTT. The fast algorithm of the proposed transform is multiplication-free and requires a reduced number of additions and bit-shifting operations. Image and video compression simulations in popular standards shows good performance of the proposed transform. Regarding hardware resource consumption for FPGA shows 43.1% reduction of configurable logic blocks and ASIC place and route realization shows 57.7% reduction in the area-time figure when compared with the 2-D version of the exact DTT.

Abstract:The principal component analysis (PCA) is widely used for data decorrelation and dimensionality reduction. However, the use of PCA may be impractical in real-time applications, or in situations were energy and computing constraints are severe. In this context, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) becomes a low-cost alternative to data decorrelation. This paper presents a method to derive computationally efficient approximations to the DCT. The proposed method aims at the minimization of the angle between the rows of the exact DCT matrix and the rows of the approximated transformation matrix. The resulting transformations matrices are orthogonal and have extremely low arithmetic complexity. Considering popular performance measures, one of the proposed transformation matrices outperforms the best competitors in both matrix error and coding capabilities. Practical applications in image and video coding demonstrate the relevance of the proposed transformation. In fact, we show that the proposed approximate DCT can outperform the exact DCT for image encoding under certain compression ratios. The proposed transform and its direct competitors are also physically realized as digital prototype circuits using FPGA technology.

Abstract:A three-dimensional discrete cosine transform(3D-DCT) based volumetric three-dimensional video data compression method was proposed in order to solve the problem of huge volumetric three-dimensional video data.The method combines 3D-DCT and three-dimensional motion estimation.The 3D-DCT was adopted to exploit spacial redundancies in a volumetric frame.A fast three-dimensional cube matching algorithm was proposed in motion estimation in order to reduce temporal redundancies between adjacent volumetric frames.A half voxel search algorithm was employed in order to improve the precision of cube matching.A quantitative method for intra-frame and inter-frame cube was proposed,and the quantified DCT coefficients were organized by a three-dimensional zigzag scan.The 3D-DCT coefficients were coded by a run-length/adaptive arithmetic encoding system.Experimental results showed that the method outperformed JPEG2000 for sequences with slow motion,while the performance of the method was worse than JPEG2000 at high bitrates for sequences with drastic motion.The method gained 2 dB in average peak signal-to-noise ratio compared with the 3D-DCT based static volumetric image compression method.
Data Compression and the 8&#x00d7;8 Integer Transform

Abstract:Data compression is a kind of power concentrating process. Complex data could be transferred into eigenvalues and sparse data concentrated directly. DCT is a very efficient transform but hard to implement. 8×8 integer transform derived here is easily mapping into a parallel accelerating system, and proved to earn a better performance than existing 4×4 ones. This work implemented 8×8 integer algorithm on the REmus system, a novel reconfigurable system designed by Tsinghua, verified the architecture with several media applications. A 46.0% speedup comparing with 4×4 integer ones and a 60.1% average boost comparing with other processors are achieved. Different dividing of frames also has an impact on other algorithms, such as deblocking, the most significant process in h264 codec. It gets 62.5% boost, too. Comparing with 4×4 ones, when quantity level is smaller than 10, 8×8 restores better pictures and a 10% improvement is always found on compress ratios.
An Area Efficient High Performance DCT Distributed Architecture for Video Compression

Abstract:Discrete cosine transform (DCT), which is an important component of image and video compression, is adopted in various standardized coding schemes, such as JPEG, MPEGx and H.26x. But when compute a two-dimensional (2D) DCT, a large number of multiplications and additions are required in the direct approach. Multiplications, which are the most time-consuming operations in simple processor, can be completely avoided in the proposed architecture for real-time image compression. An area efficient high performance VLSI architecture for DCT based on the distributed arithmetic is proposed in this paper. Minimum number of additions is used to the DCT by exploiting the timing property of the DCT transform based on the distributed arithmetic. A case study of 8 times 8 DCT architecture based on the DA is analyzed. Savings exceeding 97% are achieved for the DCT implementation.
Coding Sensitive Based Approximation Algorithm for Power Efficient VBS-DCT VLSI Design in HEVC Hardwired Intra Encoder

Abstract:High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), emerging as the latest video coding standard, obtained a 50% bit-rate reduction while maintaining the competitive visual quality as H.264/AVC. Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) is a computation intensive module in HEVC encoding. In specific, during Intra coding, RDO accounts for 62% of the overall encoding time. The 2-dimensional DCT is the most area and power consuming component for VLSI implementation of RDO module. In this paper, we decompose the matrix multiplication of DCT into several sparse butterfly structures in series. In addition, the computation and the storage of 25% high frequency coefficients are dropped by our approximation algorithm. The proposed algorithms are integrated in HM15.0. It is verified that our methods could save 15.9% time with 1.03% BDBR augment. We further implement the DCT VLSI design using TSMC 90nm standard cell library. In worst conditions (125°C, 0.9V), the power dissipation of our DCT is 12.7mW at the 311MHz maximum clock speed. As compared to the primitive design, we achieved 71.9% of hardware and 70.2% of power reductions.
Approximated Reconfigurable Transform Architecture for VVC

Abstract:As the demand for high-resolution videos grows, the next generation video coding standard Versatile Video Coding introduces many new proposals, including Adaptive Multiple Transforms (AMT), to improve coding efficiency. This paper presents a reconfigurable transform core for the VVC standard where the implementation of 1D DST-VII and DCT-VIII for all transform sizes are enabled. To offer a very low circuit complexity, a simple approximation strategy with a little coding performance loss is proposed. An 8x8 Processing Element (PE) array is employed as the core computational unit, where each PE can be configured dynamically based on the transform type. In addition, the transforms of larger sizes can be realized in the finite PE units with the Partitioned Matrix Multiplication (PMM) scheme. The experimental and synthesis results show that this design can save at least 29.1% area compared with other works in literature with the negligible degradation of video quality and a slight increase in the bit rate.
Integer DCT-based Image Coding

Abstract:DCT-based image/video coding is still popular now. In this paper, a novel embedded image coding scheme based on integer reversible DCT is proposed. It integrates lossy and lossless coding schemes perfectly. The transform is implemented by factoring the float DCT transform matrix into a series of integer reversible transform matrices. We apply the series of matrices to image samples, and encode the coefficients by several effective coding algorithms. Our simulation results show that the integer DCT coding method is superior to the float DCT coding method for lossless coding, and the performances are close for lossy coding.

Abstract:Versatile Video Coding (VVC) achieves impressive coding gain improvement (about 40%+) over the preceding High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) technology at the cost of extremely high computational complexity. Such an extremely high complexity increase is a great challenge for power-constrained applications, such as Internet of video things. In the case of intra coding, VVC utilizes the brute-force recursive search for both the partition structure of the coding unit (CU), which is based on the quadtree with nested multi-type tree (QTMT), and 67 intra prediction modes, compared to 35 in HEVC. As a result, we offer optimization strategies for CU partition decision and intra coding modes to lessen the computational overhead. Regarding the high complexity of the CU partition process, first, CUs are categorized as simple, fuzzy, and complex based on their texture characteristics. Then, we train two random forest classifiers to speed up the RDO-based brute-force recursive search process. One of the classifiers directly predicts the optimal partition modes for simple and complex CUs, while another classifier determines the early termination of the partition process for fuzzy CUs. Meanwhile, to reduce the complexity of intra mode prediction, a fast hierarchical intra mode search method is designed based on the texture features of CUs, including texture complexity, texture direction, and texture context information. Extensive experimental findings demonstrate that the proposed approach reduces complexity by up to 77% compared to the latest VVC reference software (VTM-23.1). Additionally, an average coding time saving of 70% is achieved with only a 1.65% increase in BDBR. Furthermore, when compared to state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method also achieves the largest time saving with comparable BDBR loss. These findings indicate that our method is superior to other up-to-date methods in terms of lowering VVC intra coding complexity, which provides an elective solution for power-constrained applications.
