Abstract:Seventeen patients, 14 after radiation therapy relapse, with measurable nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated with chemotherapy. Remissions were observed in 9 of 17 (53%) with 3 complete (CR) and 6 partial responses (PR). Five (2 CR + 3 PR) of seven patients with lymphoepithelioma achieved remission, 4 (1 CR + 3 PR) of 8 with keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma, and 2 progressions with transitional cell carcinoma. Complete remissions were only achieved with CDDP‐based combinations, with 2 of the 3 CR rendered histologically free of disease at the time of repeat biopsy of the tumor bed. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is responsive to chemotherapy, even after radiation therapy relapse. The most effective chemotherapy combinations contain CDDP. Histologic differentiation did not appear to influence the frequency of remissions.

Abstract:Central alpha-2-adrenoceptor function was studied in seven withdrawing alcoholics and compared with seven normal controls using the clonidine challenge test. The alcoholic group had significantly elevated basal levels of blood pressure and plasma 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenyl glycol. The percentage of fall in blood pressure produced by clonidine was blunted in the alcoholics. There was disruption of the neuroendocrine effects of clonidine on growth hormone release. Physiological indices of withdrawal, in particular plasma 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl glycol and blood pressure correlated with measures of previous withdrawal experiences, supporting the idea that kindling might occur with repeated episodes of withdrawal.

Abstract:Abstract Alkali-activated materials are agglomerates obtained from the alkaline activation of aluminum- and silicone-rich precursors. The most popular precursors for this type of activation are low-calcium fly ashes, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin. However, both high-calcium ashes (HCAs) and iron ore tailings (IOTs) are interesting wastes that can be investigated as precursors because of their available volume and environmental impact during their final deposition. Therefore, by performing tests of compressive strength, FTIR spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy, we sought to identify the products formed during HCA and IOT activation without thermal treatment. Nine mortar formulations with different HCA and IOT proportions were developed using sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate as activators. Thus, using FTIR spectrometry, we observed the reaction between the industrial wastes. Additionally, the compressive strength result suggested that the material could be used as compressed blocks in masonry walls for the development of more environmentally friendly building materials, which would mitigate the impact of waste disposal and convert industrial solid waste into value-added products.
Reusing Construction and Demolition Waste to Prepare Alkali-Activated Cement

Abstract:Large amounts of waste are derived not only from construction processes, but also the demolition of existing buildings. Such waste occupies large volumes in landfills, which makes its final disposal difficult and expensive. Reusing this waste type is generally limited to being employed as filler material or recycled aggregate in concrete, which limits its valorisation. The present work proposes reusing construction and demolition waste to manufacture alkali-activated cement to improve its sustainability and recovery. Construction and demolition waste (C&DW) from a demolition waste collection plant in Valencia (Spain) was physically and chemically characterised. This residue contained large fractions of concrete, mortar, bricks, and other ceramic materials. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis showed that its chemical composition was mainly CaO, SiO2 and Al2O3. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that it presented some crystalline products, and quartz (SiO2) and calcite (CaCO3) were the main components. Blends of C&DW and blast furnace slag (BFS) were alkali-activated with mixtures of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate. The corresponding pastes were characterised by techniques such as thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The alkali-activated mortars were prepared, and the resulting mortars' compressive strength was determined, which was as high as 58 MPa with the 50% C&DW-50% BFS mixture. This work concluded that it is possible to make new sustainable binders by the alkali activation of C&DW-BFS without using Portland cement.

Abstract:Recycling of steelmaking slags has well-established applications, such as their use in cement, asphalt, or fertilizer industries. Although in some cases, such as the electric arc furnace (EAF) high-alloyed stainless-steel production, the slag’s high metal content prevents its use in such applications. This forces companies to accumulate it as waste. Using concepts such dematerialization, waste management, industrial symbiosis, and circular economy, the article drafts a conceptual framework on the best route to solving the landfilling issue, aiming at a zero-waste process re-design. An experimental part follows, with an investigation of the use of landfill slag as a substitute of limestone for the neutralization of acidic wastewater, produced by the rinsing of steel after the pickling process. Neutralization of acidic wastewater with both lime and slag samples was performed with two different methods. Two out of four slag samples tested proved their possible use, reaching desired pH values compared to lime neutralizations. Moreover, the clean waters resulting from the neutralizations with the use of both lime and slag were tested. In terms of hazardous element concentrations, neutralization with slag yielded similar results to lime. The results of these trials show that slag is a potential substitute of lime for the neutralization of acidic wastewater.

Abstract:Electric arc furnace steel dust (EAFD) waste has been studied as a complementary byproduct material for kaolin-based clays fabricated with additive manufacturing via the direct ink writing technology. The combination of clay with steel dust has a positive contribution to the environment because this waste can be stabilized, and the corresponding pollution reduced. EAFD is classified as a hazardous waste from the metallurgical industry with millions of tons not properly disposed or used worldwide. The research presented in this investigation evaluate the use EAFD as an admixture for clay ceramics to produce three-dimensional printed (3DP) parts. The cylindrical specimens fabricated involved not only different water to clay ratios but also waste contents from 0 wt% to 20 wt%. After a sintering processing in an air atmosphere, samples were treated during 2 hours at 1100 °C, and later tested in compression tests. Other conducted characterization tests were density, scanning electron microscopy, rheology, Weibull statistics, and creep analysis. The main contribution of this research to the literature is the valorization of the EAFD hazardous waste as a material for 3D printing.

Abstract:The construction sector is presently among the most resource-intensive industries, driving a substantial body of research dedicated to the development of more sustainable materials to address these demands. A particularly promising approach within the framework of the circular economy is the repurposing of waste as a principal raw material for the creation of new construction products. Within this context, the primary aim of this study is to engineer ceramic materials for brick production using 100% waste-derived inputs, specifically aggregate washing sludge and manganese mining by-products. To evaluate the potential of these sustainable ceramic materials, an extensive investigation was conducted, encompassing both physical and mechanical testing, as well as a thorough characterisation of the waste inputs. For this purpose, a series of ceramic specimens were fabricated with varying proportions of mining residues and aggregate washing sludge, adhering to the conventional protocols employed in the manufacture of ceramic bricks. The results demonstrate that these sustainable ceramics exhibit a linear shrinkage reduction of up to 5% compared to traditional clay-based ceramics. Furthermore, they show water absorption levels—whether via capillarity, cold water, or hot water absorption—that are up to twice those observed in conventional clay ceramics, while maintaining comparable density values. This increased absorption, however, correlates with a reduction in mechanical strength at higher concentrations of manganese waste, yet the material continues to meet the minimum strength requirements as specified by industry standards for such products. In conclusion, this research introduces a novel, sustainable ceramic material that not only reduces economic and environmental costs but also adheres to the required performance criteria for construction applications.

Abstract:This research presented, for the first time, the results of the successful application of the waste press sludges, WSLP (plant for lacquer and paint) and WSEP (powdery enamel plant), from a wastewater treatment plant generated during heating device production in the construction industry. The results of WSEP characterization and its influence on cement paste, mortar, and concrete properties showed that this material could be used as a cement replacement (with a maximum replacement amount of 20%) in producing mortar and concrete. Although waste WSLP sludge does not possess pozzolanic properties and does not meet the criteria prescribed by the standards for application in mortar and concrete due to its chemical inertness and fineness, as well as its extended setting time, it can be used as a replacement for stone filler or other powdered mineral admixture in the production of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in amounts up to 100%, with a maximum quantity of up to 100 kg/m3. The obtained results indicate that with the appropriate conversion, waste sludges, despite representing hazardous waste, can be used as safe products in the construction industry; i.e., the waste material can become a useful and valuable raw material by applying (respecting) all of the principles of the green economy.

Abstract:Slaker grits (SG) and biomass fly ash (BFA), two waste streams generated in the pulp and paper industry, are commonly disposed of in landfills, a practice with a high economic and environmental burden. In this work, their individual valorization as fillers in a commercial screed mortar formulation was evaluated in order to achieve a more sustainable management practice. The waste streams were characterized in terms of true density, particle size and morphology, and chemical and mineralogical composition. The influence of their incorporation amount (5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 wt.% of the total solids) and pre-treatment (sieving and grinding) on the fresh (workability) and hardened state (density, water absorption by capillarity, and flexural and compressive strength) properties of the mortars were assessed. The results show that the addition of 10.0 wt.% of the SG after milling and sieving (<75 μm) and 7.5 wt.% of BFA in the as-received condition, or up to 10.0 wt.% after grinding and sieving (<63 μm), allowed for the production of mortar samples with properties within the recommended specifications and that were resistant to 25 consecutive freeze-thaw cycles. This waste valorization route could represent an economic benefit of up to 8.85 €/tmortar and 2.87 €/tmortar for mortar, and pulp and paper companies, respectively.

Abstract:The substitution of standard clays to residues, in this case copper smelter slag and fly ashes coming from the incineration process of MSW in traditional ceramics manufacturing, could suppose cost savings due to the use of recycling by-products as raw materials and reduce firing temperatures. However, these residues are considered a factor of air, soil and water contamination when its stabilization is not viable. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of adding this residue in manufacturing of ceramic bricks, as well as tested the immobilization of Pb and As in ceramic tile bodies obtained. Water absorption, linear contraction, and bending strength have been accomplished. The decrease in water absorption with the increase of waste added was tested. The incorporation of these wastes gives rise to an increase in strength. The results showed the viability of replacing up to 40% of clay with these residues, with an improvement in the resistance of pieces compared to ceramics made without adding residues. The immobilization of As and Pb was also observed in the ceramic bodies obtained. Leaching tests show that immobilization of both elements (As and Pb) improves with increasing firing temperature.

Abstract:Steel slag is a by-product in the process of steel manufacture. It has caused huge environmental pressure. The use of steel slag as the admixture of cement-based materials is an effective way to enhance clean production. But the poor volume stability caused by dead burned lime and periclase in steel slag is a crucial factor restricting its utilization. Some research has shown that carbonization could convert dead burned lime and periclase into carbonate. But the carbonization rate and carbonization degree were low. The objective of this paper is to adopt Bacillus Mucilaginosus (BM) to absorb carbon dioxide to promote the carbonization of dead burned lime and periclase, thereby enhancing steel slag utilization in cement-based materials. The effects of BM on the carbonization rate and degree of dead burned lime and periclase were studied by conducting experiments; the influence of BM on the stability of steel slag mortar with different particle sizes was studied. The results show that BM can reduce the apparent activation energy of the carbonization reaction of dead burnt lime and periclase, and increase the reaction rate and maximum reactivity. MIP (Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry) analysis found that steel slag mortar specimen with BM had a lower porosity than that without BM. The autoclaved linear expansion rate of the steel slag mortar specimen with BM can meet standard requirements while that without BM cannot. It is indicated that the addition of BM can effectively promote the carbonization of dead burned lime and periclase in steel slag and solve the problem of poor volume stability of cement-based materials caused by steel slag. This research helps to improve the utilization of steel slag as an alternative binder to cement and alleviates the environmental pressure caused by the storage of waste steel slag.

Abstract:The valorisation of sludges from aggregate production into construction materials is required for full circularity in mining waste management. This study explores valorisation pathways, relevant regulatory frameworks, and End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria for specific settings in Spain and Norway. The explored valorisation routes involved the production of filler, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), and lightweight aggregates (LWAs) for the production of cement-based products, and precursors for 3D printed construction material. The sludge from Norway revealed a non-polluted stream and a stream contaminated with organic phases and clays. Sludge-based filler proved suitable in concrete production with contents of up to 40% of total binder, providing adequate consistency and cohesion. However, clays in the sludge increased the demand for water and superplasticizer. Clay contents were still insufficient for the applications as SCMs, as the calcined sludge demonstrated limited reactivity. The application to produce LWAs was promising, but further microstructure optimization is still required. The clay content was also relevant for the sludge from the site in Spain, as it provided 3D printing mixes with good plasticity. The dosage optimization still required the addition of enzymes, limestone, and natural fibres to improve cohesion, workability, and resistance to the cracking of the 3D printing mix.

Abstract:Converter steel slag is produced in large quantities as by-product of primary steel-making, which is mainly landfilled or used as an aggregate The high reactivity of converter steel slag with CO2 makes it an ideal material for CO2 capture by forming calcite even at ambient temperature and pressure. This reaction can also be used to for the production of green building materials. However, the carbonation of steel slag is strongly controlled by the particle size, which influences CO2 transport and carbonation speed. In this study, low carbon footprint binders consisting of various fine converter steel slag powder (80%) and normal cement (20%) are applied to produce mortars using ambient carbonation. The results indicate that the variation of steel slag particle size influences gas transport and CO2 uptake of carbonated steel slag blended mortars during the curing period, which effects microstructure, strength, and leaching. The application of optimal size range of steel slag (21.75–24.13 µm) in blended mortars leads to a higher compressive strength (31.21 MPa), CO2 uptake (15.9 %), faster carbonation rateas well as sustainability efficiency (0.486 MPa/(kg/m3)), which is obviously superior compared to the larger or smaller size of steel slags mortars. . The leaching properties, especially V and Ca leaching of steel slag blended mortars are observed to be strongly influenced by the CO2 uptake, rather than steel slag particle size. A green binder system is achieved by both the reduction of cement content and the high CO2 uptake by mass of binder.

Abstract:In light of globalization and escalating environmental concerns, society is increasingly confronted with the challenge of implementing the concept of a circular economy, which promotes the recycle of waste materials and offers a promising solution. Aluminum dross, a byproduct of the aluminum production process, poses environmental issues when not properly managed. Therefore, this study examined the technical and financial feasibility of implementing an industrial process for the recovery and transformation of aluminum dross into raw materials for use in cementitious materials. From a technical perspective, two processes were evaluated: washing and the grindability of the material. An X-ray diffraction analysis allowed to verify an approximately 88% reduction in AlN (a compound that produces ammonia gases when reacting with water) after washing the material. The most efficient grinding process was achieved using an impact mill. The financial feasibility study was carried out through cash flow forecasting, which revealed that a minimum selling price of USD 0.12 per kilogram of processed material could generate a return rate of 9.7% over a five-year period. These results present opportunities for the metal and construction industries to develop products with low CO2 emissions by reintegrating aluminum dross into a productive cycle. Moreover, this work serves as a valuable reference for policymakers and environmental authorities seeking to formulate new legislation or incentives that encourage companies to invest in environmentally focused projects.

Abstract:The construction sector is responsible for one third of the total wastes produced in the EU. Finding solutions for the reuse or recycling of these wastes is one of the major environmental concerns of modern times. The replacement of sand or cement in specific construction materials, such as concrete or mortars, is a possible solution for these wastes’ management. By using construction and demolition wastes in construction materials, namely on buildings, the cycle of circular economy is closed, increasing the life cycle of the wastes in the same sector. In this research, a reduction of cement content in rendering mortars is analysed. This reduction is achieved by a decrease of the cement/aggregate ratio simultaneously with the incorporation of very fine recycled aggregate from construction and demolition waste. Two recycled aggregates were studied: recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and mixed recycled aggregate (MRA). The fresh and hardened state properties of the mortars were analysed. Several tests were carried out to evaluate the mortars’ performance, such as mechanical strength tests, water absorption tests, drying tests and shrinkage. It was noticed that the incorporation of RCA led to a better behaviour than in the reference mortar, in terms of mechanical strengths and protection against water.

Abstract:An environmentally friendly method of applying super-hydrophobic modified steel slag in cement-based materials to decrease water absorption and improve corrosion resistance is proposed. The wettability, cumulative water absorption, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties of a mortar mixed with different amounts of a super-hydrophobic steel slag were studied. The results show that as the amount of the super-hydrophobic steel slag in the mortar increased, its wettability and surface free energy decreased. An increase in the super-hydrophobic steel slag content of the mortar also led to a decrease in the cumulative water absorption. Electrochemical experiments showed that addition of the super-hydrophobic steel slag effectively improved corrosion resistance of the mortar. Addition of a small amount (<10%) of the super-hydrophobic steel slag in the mortar improved its compressive and flexural strengths. This proposed green method of using such steel slag in cement-based materials is conducive to achieving sustainable development.

Abstract:Due to a continuously developing population, our consumption of one of the most widely used building materials, concrete, has increased. The production of concrete involves the use of cement whose production is one of the main sources of CO2 emissions; therefore, a challenge for today's society is to move towards a circular economy and develop building materials with a reduced environmental footprint. This study evaluates the possibility of using new sustainable supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) from waste such as recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) and mixed recycled aggregates (MRAs) from construction and demolition waste, as well as bottom ash from olive biomass (BBA-OL) and eucalyptus biomass ash (BBA-EU) derived from the production of electricity. A micronisation pre-treatment was carried out by mechanical methods to achieve a suitable fineness and increase the SCMs' specific surface area. Subsequently, an advanced characterisation of the new SCMs was carried out, and the acquired properties of the new cements manufactured with 25% cement substitution in the new SCMs were analysed in terms of pozzolanicity, mechanical behaviour, expansion and setting time tests. The results obtained demonstrate the feasibility of using these materials, which present a composition with potentially reactive hydraulic or pozzolanic elements, as well as the physical properties (fineness and grain size) that are ideal for SCMs. This implies the development of new eco-cements with suitable properties for possible use in the construction industry while reducing CO2 emissions and the industry's carbon footprint.

Abstract:Converting industrial wastes into value-added building products in an environmental management strategy is a challenging yet vital component of the industrial process. Steel slag (SS), an industrial waste by-product from the steel-making process, is typically disposed of in landfill which consumes land resources and pollutes the environment. This paper explores the possibility of a closed-loop system to convert steel slag into a cement material through carbonation activation, thereby significantly reducing the amount of steel slag waste sent to landfills across Canada. The production of this cementing material can occur next to the steel mill, utilizing steel slag and carbon dioxide collected on-site to fabricate carbon-negative products. To save energy and allow production to be feasible on an industrial scale, ambient pressure (AP) carbonation is developed to reduce carbon emissions while improving their performance. High pressure (HP) carbonation curing and normal hydration (NH) references were also implemented at the same time to justify the application of AP carbonation in reducing CO2 emission. The results of this study found AP carbonation-activated SS compacts have comparable CO2 uptake (about 7.5 tons CO2/100 tons slag) and mechanically compressive strength values as those subjected to HP carbonation, suggesting that AP could be used to replace HP in carbonation curing to ensure a lower energy input. Additionally, AP seemed to possess as effective carbonation as HP. The studies investigated by multiple techniques including X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopic analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) aim to identify the microstructure development of carbonated SS paste to assess carbonation results. Developed with life cycle assessment (LCA), environmental impact evaluation shows that AP presents a smaller global warming potential (GWP) value than HP. The comparable CO2 sequestration, satisfactory engineering properties, enhanced microstructure and lesser environmental impact in AP carbonation confirm the feasibility of replacing high pressure with extremely low pressure to cure concrete products. The use of AP carbonation for cement material created using steel slag reduces carbon emissions, energy usage, and natural resource consumption.
